I've only been here once, but I loved this place. Setting: early evening, one of my first nights in Norman, bored, ravenously hungry with a book for company. Somehow I managed to pick this spot and had a lovely evening hanging out with myself, stuffing my face - it was early enough that I was one of 2-3 groups in the restaurant, and a woman who worked there seemed to cater to my every food whim. I felt like I had a personal advisor on spice levels, and she was extremely attentive without being intrusive. Whoever you are, woman, I love you! Food-wise, it was also excellent. I had a green papaya salad, which, admittedly, was not The Best I've ever had (that was found in the boonies outside of St. Louis, oddly enough), but was fantastic and made my nose run freely. Next up was some sort of a pineapple curry that fulfilled every craving I didn't even know I'd had. Clearly I need to go back just to branch out a little.

This WAS my favorite restaurant in Norman for the last four years. The have slowly been going downhill within the last year. They have recently barely changed the menu, with no problem there. However they have changed the way they make things. The pad Thai used to be my favorite thing on the menu. It was the best Pad Thai in Norman and Oklahoma City hands-down. Nobody cooked their tofu better either. It's difficult to find good tofu! The Pad See Ew extremely bland. The flavor was very diluted. Last time I came in after the menu changes is was exponentially better than the old recipe. Very inconsistent. The portion size had gone up on the Pad Thai, but it was mostly pasta. It was better than last time I went in. More flavor, but nothing like it was last year. The tofu is not remotely the same either. The tofu is barely sauced. Server was friendly and helpful. 25 minute wait for food. Glad we got appetizers. Spring rolls are too good! No more fortune cookies.

Best Thai, best service and cleanest in Norman. So freaking good! The Papaya Salad is insane as an entree instead of just the side... Get it with some spice.

Best Thai place in town!!! Mango sticky rice = a must. They have a dish that I get every time I go, which is a curry dish that has noodles in it, it is so good! They also have a decent alcohol menu.

As my past review said: The food is wonderful and the staff is great! I get the red curry every time I come here. I have tried a bite of my friends and everyone was great! By far my favorite thai place in Norman. I still think this is true! I love this place! What great food and the staff is wonderful well all but one! The manager! I had read another review about this lady but I had never experienced her attitude until just tonight... Let me explain my situation first: I had not that much to eat today and just got so busy I completely forgot to eat... I know stupid right?? Well 9:10pm came around and I decided I would pick something up to eat... Of course I wanted to go to my favorite Thai food place. It closed at 10pm so I called in an order to go. I did not want to be rude and seat down right at closing time. I am one of those people who hate to make other upset and I consider other feeling before making my decision. I hate those who walk in at 9:50 or even 9:30 when a places closes at 10pm... So before I ordered I asked him if it was okay if I order this late. I know some places have a time limit to a call in so close to closing time. When I called in by order which of course was just a red curry (favorite), the guy that answered was really nice! Of course I could her his manager in the back ground talking to him. She was asking him question about my order and he was having to repeat himself... She finally seemed like to me that she took the phone from him and was not very nice... these were her question What are you ordering? Is that all you are ordering because we are closing soon? Are you coming in 10 minutes? I thought that was really rude... it is not like I was coming to seat in the eat or that I was ordering a lot of food... If you own a business! Do not treat others like that! I am sure there is a language barrier and it may seem like you come across that way but maybe you should let your nice employee take care of it since he was handling it just fine! I'm sure glad she hires nice employees! I hope I don't have to deal with her much...

My husband and I felt like trying a new thai restaurant in town so we decided to give it a try. You would think pad thai is pad thai but mine was overloaded with veggies and the noodles were mushy and had no flavor. My husbands fried rice had a lot of shrimp which he liked but half of his meal was onions. He seriously had a plate-full of onions he had to pick out. Also, they are more expensive than other places and I think we got less food. On the plus side everyone was very nice and it was very easy to order over the phone because they spoke good English.

My first time visiting and I'm so impressed! The spring rolls were fabulous and the Evil Curry level 3 is to die for. And what nice staff! Definitely a new regular spot for me.

First off: Sweet Basil is mere blocks from my house, and I have never eaten anything here that I didn't enjoy. Basil noodles, Pad Thai, Kao Soi... all lovely. The thing about Sweet Basil is... it's weird, guys. And despite having some solid waiters / waitresses, the overall customer service feel is actually kind of rude. And they take the napkin out of your water glass and put it in your lap, which--maybe this is just me--seems freaky for a place with $12 entrees. Once, a party of five or six of us came in on a game day, and instead of letting us know how long the wait would be, the hostess on that day had what seemed like a minor panic attack AT us--visibly annoyed that we'd presumed we'd be able to eat. At a restaurant. A couple of years ago, I ate here on Halloween. The stern hostess (and I'm guessing manager or owner) was in a full-on bee costume but never let a smile slip. I ordered takeout once, and the person on the phone groaned about the time I was calling, complaining that it was close to closing time. So... want some delicious Thai food? Stop on in. I do stand by the food. But the service is bizarrely inconsistent, even uncomfortable.

There are two restaurants I cheat on LOCAL with, and this is one of them. I ADORE this place, and it's even better now that they have wine. It's weird to be a little fanatical about something as prosaic as fried rice - but they do something special with their rice. I crave it about once a month. Just the rice. Which is crazy. The only inconsistencies is with the spice-o-meter. I'm not happy eating Thai unless my eyes are watering and my nose is running. But one person's 2 is another person's 5, so that's a little tough to judge. I usually get a 3 and you can always get some extra heat if you need it. I've had every kind of curry and a variety of the noodles - my dad says the catfish is some of the best he's ever had. And these guys show up to a lot of charity events, which puts them even higher in my book. I'm confused by the people who think this is expensive. It's fresh, made to order food and it's certainly not as expensive as some of the chains. The lunch menu is tasty and features everything you want at lunch for about $10. A meal deal at Arby's is like $8, so why wouldn't you sit down with friends someplace locally owned instead?

The food is amazing and the flavors come alive in your mouth. You can't go wrong with the Pad Thai or the yellow curry. The staff does a great job making dishes the way you love them and this is the only place that will make food really spicy on request. They are generous with the vegetables so if you don't love onions or peppers you can always ask them to go easy on the onions. I wish the prices were lower but I'm willing to pay more to support a family business that has the best Thai food in the state.

This may be my favorite Thai restaurant in Norman. Very nice atmosphere is good for either lunch or a quiet, romantic dinner for two. The food is outstanding, try spice level 5!

Yummy Thai food that seems close to authentic. It is a clean, classy atmosphere and we were given good service. We had the drunken noodles, pad grapow, pad see-ew and chicken satay, along with spring rolls for appetizers. Everything tasted great!

We love this place little pricey for Thai food but we think it's worth it.

Food here is consistently good, service not always so (although it has improved markedly since the restaurant's early months). Quite dark inside with booths that are very private, so makes for a good date restaurant. They don't serve alcohol.

The environment is fancy. We ordered the rice noodles as every time we had Thai food. N28 basil noodles is very good, perfect spicy, strongly recommended. But N29 is too sweet for us. Compared to other Thai places, it's a bit expensive. Also, the amount is quite small.

Nice atmosphere and interesting decor. Cool fish tank. Service is quick and very good. The food is slightly better than Pad Thai on Campus Corner in my opinion. Very fresh. Great spring rolls too. The restaurant is hard to spot as you come down Main street, but in the bleak Norman restaurant market (outside of Campus Corner) Sweet Basil is pretty good.

I ate at Sweet Basil for the first time today, and was pretty disappointed. I've lived in Norman for a year now, and everyone has told me that this is THE BEST Thai place in town. I've tried to eat there three other times, but the place wasn't open at any of those times. They have one of those really inconvenient lunch hours and dinner hours only schedules, with hours of being closed in the middle of the day. Stupid. So anyway, the place looks nice when you sit down, and the general atmosphere is just fine. We were seated, and our server was very nice, very attentive, and everything came out promptly. His name was Sean and he was super nice. That being said... The menu was INCREDIBLY limited. There were about 12 options on the whole thing. Maybe this is just a lunch time phenomenon, but that's just ludicrous. But we were hungry, and dining in a group, so we just dealt with the ridiculously limited options. When the food came out, both my partner and I exchanged looks of utter disbelief at how little food was on the plate. The mountain of rice was easily four to five times the size of the piddly little bit of actual entree you get. I think there were 6 pieces of chicken on my plate. Six pieces, roughly the size of a quarter each. And it was $11 per plate for chicken (it only gets more expensive from there). We moved here from California, where Thai restaurants are a dime a dozen, and portions like this would put you out of business back home - no matter how good the food tastes. (Unless you market it as "gourmet" in SF or something, where people pay more for that sort of thing..Also stupid.) The food arrived pretty quickly, and tasted good - not great - but by the time I was finished, the salty-ness of the dish (I ordered the Garlic Stir Fry) was burning the inside of my mouth a bit. Speaking of burning mouths, there's no consistency with the spicyness of the dishes at all. The Tom Yum soup will choke you a bit if you're not expecting the spice of it, but you order your food as a 3 of 5 on the spicy scale, and it's not spicy at all. Not impressed in this department either. Also that Tom Yum soup tastes like they use a fish sauce and vinegar base for the broth. NOT good at all. I'm really just not impressed at all. I've now eaten at every Thai place in Norman, and Thai Kum Koon is the same food, but WAAAYYYY cheaper. Like half the price cheaper. Everything else in town is fake Americanized crap. Like, total crap. Not even real Thai food at all. We had the mango and sticky rice for dessert, and it was very good. It was also quite pricey, $6, but tasted very good. So. I don't recommend this restaurant enthusiastically at all. I'm cheap, so I'll just go back to Thai Kum Koon and get twice the food for half the money.

Just moved to Oklahoma last week from California where there are many Thai restaurants so it was awesome to see Norman had a place! They have great service and the atmosphere is beautiful! We ordered basil and garlic stir fry and fresh rolls that came with a delicious peanut sauce and a sweet Chili sauce! If you never had chai tea I suggest you take your taste buds for a spin! You'll be glad you did! I will for sure be returning

Not a real Thai restaurant. As a Thai person who was born in Bangkok, this food doesn't taste Thai at all. Go to Pad Thai, that's real Thai food cooked by Thai people. Pad see ew is wayyyy too sweet, doesn't taste right. Thai tea is wayy to sweet too. Tom Jeud isn't bad though but for some reason, the broccoli in the soup is so bitter. The decoration of the place is nice though. Service is ok.

Wow. Sweet Basil is delicious! I was excited to come here while driving through Norman and was delighted by the quality of this food. I had the yellow curry with chicken and really loved it. My friends had the pad Thai and evil curry and also loved their dishes! Their spice scale is 0 to 5 and I got a 3 for my curry. It was the perfect amount of heat for me, spicy but manageable. I was a fan of the spring rolls appetizer too. Our service was great and anytime I'm craving Thai food in the area, I will most definitely return here.

My absolute favorite Thai place in Norman! I started visiting this establishment about a year ago after giving up on other Thai places in the area (one that I used to work at as a waitress during my freshman-junior year of college). I've now graduated and moved on to better things, both literally and figuratively. Sweet Basil has a wide-array of options on their menu. I usually order takeout and go with the authentic Pad Thai or Spicy Basil Noodles. Their side items are also fabulous, so try the stir-fry noodles as they are to die for! Service is always top-notch in my opinion. Every time I place an order over the phone, they are clear, concise and polite; same as if I were to dine-in. Writing this review is making me excited to get back from my business trip and revisit this place!

The last few times I've been to Sweet Basil I've noticed the food and staff quality has dropped somewhat. There's nothing really special about the Thai food and on my last visit, the waitress was unconcerned, very slow, and didn't think I could handle the spice level I asked for. On top of that, when my food came out, it wasn't spicy AT ALL. I don't know if there's been a change in management, but I won't be in a hurry to return here after this most recent experience. The Thai iced tea is still delicious at least.

Of the many times I've eaten at Sweet Basil, I've never had a bad curry. Their panang curry with tofu is excellent- not too spicy yet still flavorful- and their "fresh rolls" are a vegetable-filled must order. If they're offering mango sticky rice, you're in for a treat. The interior of the restaurant is a little on the dark side but well decorated. The front room is occupied by booths while individual tables for larger parties take up the back room. A lovely salt water aquarium is near the middle of the restaurant filled with brightly colored fish. Service ranges from average to very good (depending on your server) and prices are reasonable for the amount and quality of food. Parking is on Main Street which means backing up into traffic can be a little tricky but there are usually spots available. As far as attire goes, I've seen everything from t-shirts and jeans to business casual to dressier clothes. What takes away one star? On a recent lunch visit where two tofu curries were ordered, the waitress came back to our table to inform us they were out of tofu. Out of tofu. At a Thai restaurant. What also irked me is that no one offered any sort of positive replacement to make up for the negative experience- the main ingredient of both of the dishes ordered contained tofu (and neither of us eats meat) so I was expecting the waitress to offer a discount or free dessert for our disappointment but we didn't hear anything other than a half-hearted apology. The curries came out with vegetables instead and while the vegetables were well cooked, I'm not a fan of baby corn or a few of the other veggies used to replace the tofu so my enjoyment of the meal was significantly reduced. Also, I've had the coconut coated banana slices before when they were delicious and light and I've had them (my visit before last) when they were like heavy, crunchy, lukewarm banana nuggets so keep that risk in mind when considering dessert. In spite of that, my overall experiences at Sweet Basil are favorable and I recommend it as a cozy date restaurant or for a meal with family. One of the best Thai restaurants in Norman.

Sweet Basil is a must if you are in the Norman area. The atmosphere is set up for a trendy scene and you might feel awkward dressing in plain casual. Great for a date night. The food has always been spectacular and if you go with a group, it will usually run cheaper if you get a variety of dishes and split the ticket. Again, this is the premiere place for Thai food in the OKC area. Just be sure to know your tolerance of spicy; they will give you the option of 1-5, 5 being the hottest. I usually go for the 5.

If you're looking for quick tips: -The quantity per cost ratio for my Thai BBQ was on the disappointing side. Pad Thai entree looked like a generous portion. This place is moderately priced and competitive with other Thai joints. -You go for the ambiance because it's romantic and dimly lit. -I think we went on a bad night, but so far I think the food quality isn't the greatest. Highly suggest the Kao-Soi. -Service, pretty good. First friday of the month means Downtown Norman art walk! Our friends wanted to go to a restaurant on Main street so Sweet Basil was the choice for Thai. The decor is very very nice.... Comfy looking booths line one of the walls when you enter the restaurant. They were tall which provided a more intimate experience. Perfect for a date! I'm a sucker for bathrooms! The walls had this nice metallic sheen and it smelt like a pretty girly room. The BF and I were kindly greeted by two hosts. We unfortunately ended up sitting in the back of the room where a large party was celebrating a birthday. You'll figure out why this was unfortunate soon enough. It was an older group of people so thankfully they weren't annoying or rambunctious. After we ordered, our server apologized in advance because our food might come out late. Normally I wouldn't be so annoyed by this, but our food came out an hour late. We ordered before the large party and yet we got served after them. Hmmm. It gave me the impression that the kitchen staff was ill prepared for a group of this size. Our waitress touched our table maybe 3 times just to refill drinks, but never updated us on our food. Finally the food arrived, but two of the 4 dishes were cold. The Kao-Soi was the only hot dish. I thought it tasted far better then my BBQ Pork. The menu says that it's grilled and blended with a mixture of cilantro, lemon grass and garlic, but it tastes more like it was garnished with a little fish sauce flavoring. It was nice and tender though! Instead of a cucumber salad I got a cabbage salad. WAAh?

Well. the food was not bad, except mine had a rock in it. I bit down on it and thought I had cracked a tooth. I have not seen a dentist yet... Anyway, the waitress knocked 50% off that one entree, which is less than one would have expected, since I had eaten half of it before finding the rock and the other half had to be thrown out. I also noticed that it is about is about 33% more expensive than other comparable places and they skimp on the meat significantly. Also, I asked for spicy... It was pretty mild.
