El Campesino boasts of quality Mexican food but falls short when trying to deliver such promises. The restaurant is nothing special, very reminiscent of your generic Chevy's. The decor is cute, with tapetes and other authentic-looking hats and paintings. The service was OK. The waiter only stopped by our table once in the hour that we were there, which is a no-no. The food was appalling. This food was for people who have never tasted authentic Mexican food before. They sprinkle beans and cheese on everything and expect it to instantly taste like Mexican food. Well, it didn't taste anything remotely close to being authentic. The food was heavy and sloppily made, with melted cheese everywhere there were imperfections in the dish. It was not good. The prices for the plates were more than reasonable. Overall, I don't recommend this place at all. It will just give you a shallow experience as opposed to the rich, fulfilling one authentic Mexican food provides. Don't go here. Chipotle is way better.

I went here for my birthday celebration and to put it quite frankly, this was the worst decision ever. I would put negative stars if I could. I did not even feel welcomed into this established upon entering. The hostess Victoria, who doubled as the manager, was very rude and unwelcoming. She huffed and puffed and rolled her eyes as she grabbed our menus, put them on the table without saying one word to us. McDonald's has better customer service. I then proceeded to observe Victoria sit another (white) party and treat them as if they were welcomed. Now if her treatment of my party was due to racism, I'm not sure, but it sure seemed like it. Now to the food: greasy and salty sums that up. I will be returning only to talk to the owner about Victoria and her treatment of paying customers.

We come here for the chicken tortilla soup which is very good. Everything else is fair.

Was in Wooster yesterday on business, and came across this place for lunch. I was hoping for something more authentic, but lost out. All these pseudo Mexican joints are all about the same...not "authentic" Mexican grub, but Americanized for our taste, and this joint is no exception. Its good, and I like it, but it IS just another "Mexican joint" like the hundreds others across the state. I give it an A-OK.

If you live in Wooster, OH, you don't have much choice when it comes to ethnic food. Sadly, if you want Mexican, this is probably the best choice -- and it is one of the worst Mexican restaurants we've ever experienced. Stunningly bad food. Noisy and cold setting. Mediocre (at best) service.

This place would get, perhaps, 3 stars if service in the bar area existed. I literally had a frequent customer serve me a drink by going behind the bar because no restaurant employee had been seen in 20 minutes. The food is average, at best, Mexican border food. But, it's about as good as it gets in Wooster. However, below average service is its downfall.

We went here for my birthday dinner with a group of 12. I had the special fried burrito which was good, but The chips and salsa left a lot to be desired. It didn't thrill me to have chocolate sauce all over my shirt after they did the birthday song and gave you some ice cream (and push for face in it) that move cost them a star.

Sadly but true...the food here is mediocre at best but a fun place to meet friends. The menu is the same as most midwestern Mexican restaurants with prefab refried beans and dry Mexican rice. Lacks imagination and the food is bland. The chicken tortilla soup is very salty. I did like one thing on the menu and that was their flan.

On this visit, we tried the beef chimichanga. It was one of the best chimi's I have ever had. That will definitely be the staple dish from now on. I also tried their beef quesadilla. If you get this, be sure to ask the waiter to go very light on the cheese. I was gagging on all of the cheese half way through. It was stuffed too full for a quesadilla. With just a little cheese, it would have been great. This is still at the top of the list for the most authentic and flavorful Mexican restaurant in Wooster.

While I was not expecting authentic Mexican, I was expecting Americanized Mexican. The menu reflects the later, but the food is particularly distasteful. I found it greasy at worst and flavorless at best. I am still confused about the lack of flavor. I have been 4 times (as you know, Wooster lacks diversity in it's food selection). I have given El Campesino a fair try; I will not return. Update: the new Mexican restaurant on Cleveland is much better. I hope that this competition will prompt El Campesino to increase the quality of their food.

El Campesino is a great place to eat! It is a must do if you are in the Wooster area. It is always busy with a great atmosphere, big/great food, and great service. The staff ensures that you have a full glass during your meal and when you complete your meal they are quick to get rid of your plate. Great place in a great city.

We eat here all the time- the staff is very friendly and work hard to get the food to you quickly! The grilled chicken fajita quesadilla is my fave. Its hard not to keep eating the chips n salsa after I am done eating my meal...uuuugh. I always leave full! Also they have $1.99 margs on Wednesdays nights and they are pretty potent- I recommend ordering the "gold" margarita instead of the regular lime. They are also very busy on Wed nights and weekend nights as well as after area churches let out on Sundays.

The great thing about this play is your do not have to worry yourself with a menu because everything tastes about the same. Unfortunately it is all mediocre. A decent place to grab a few Friday night drinks though.

No mexican place can receive more than three stars from me if they don't offer a mole. And they don't offer a mole. The food is pretty good though, the service is friendly, and everything is pretty quick. In all, it's wayyy better than what you'd expect to get form a mexican place in the middle of Amish country, and WORLDS better than the chipotle down the street. The menu is pretty expansive, so If you get stuck, I recommend the Pork burrito that takes a while to make (evensays so on the menu). . .with refried beans and rice. Alright I can't think of the name! So sue me! It's there!

El Campesino is one of the few Mexican restaurants in Wooster, OH. I was visiting a friend here for a day and they decided to take me out to dinner to their regular place for Mexican. I have lived in Texas for two years and had some great Mexican food there, also I have been very disappointed with Mexican food in Albany, NY so I had very low expectations. The ambiance is very unique!! There is overcrowding. You feel like you are not in a very organized place. They have people working here who are fairly good and attentive to the customers. They had very good salsa and chips to start with. It was very nice so my expectations started going up. I am a vegetarian, so I had choices A, B, C, D, E, and F. I ordered F and it was not that great. One of my friend ordered A which was okay according to her. I can not explain the difference in the food taste because it is almost the same. There are very few places that serve good veg. food. I am not sure about food with chicken or other meat. I think it is an option for people who are craving mexican food in Wooster, OH. I will not go there if I have an option.

Come for the margaritas, not the food. El Camps is great for birthdays, as they can accommodate fairly large parties, and they do the whole shove ice cream in the birthday boy/girl's face ordeal. However, their food is pretty much inedible. Flavorless, weird beef surrounds your plate of shredded lettuce and orange tomatoes. However, the margaritas are good!

If you're looking for authentic Mexican, lower your expectations or stay home and learn to make it yourself. If you like super Americanized Mexican and realize you're in the middle of Amish Country, give El Campesino it's due. Service is fast. It's easy to get a table. Chips and salsa are free. The margaritas are cheap and decent. The portions are huge. Prices are low and there are always coupons on the back of a Buehler's receipt. This is not great Mexican, but the place is fun in it's own cheesy way.

Brightly decorated and (seemingly) clean. We like to come here as a family. It is pretty festive. The food is about what you expect from a suburban Mexican family restuarant! They serve Dr. Pepper in huge glasses.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
