Delicious food made just the way you like it! Amazing service! I would totally go back.

I have eaten here twice so far, and think I'm going to go back for dinner tonight! My first time dining in I tried the appetizer sampler, chicken tikka masala, and a mango lassi. The sampler gave us some of everything to try, and it was all really good! I enjoyed the pakoras (vegetable and chicken) more than the samosas, but I usually do anywhere. My entree was the best tikka masala I've had in Toledo. I got it medium and it had a great level of spice, the sauce was vey flavorful, and the chicken was tender. The entree came with rice and naan (more than enough for 2 people). Beware if you order extra spicy/Indian spicy, they're not joking when they say it's HOT! We couldn't finish our meals, so our waitress provided us several containers and foil so we could take it all home! The second time I was here was to pick up carry-out dinners on my way home from work. I ended up with a large bag of food and 2 mango lassis to carry, so gentleman who waited on me was great and offered to help me carry things to my car despite the fact it was pouring down rain! The chicken vindaloo I had was great, and my to-go dinners came with plenty of rice, naan, and a vegetable samosa per dinner. All in all the food is the best, the service is great, and the diner-style furnishings are as good a place as any to enjoy great Indian food!

A real gem of service and great food. Star of India has a delightful setting, friendly staff and delicious food. Their lunch specials are a great deal (all thali-style meals) for under $10. So far, I've been 5 or 6 times, and can totally recommend the veggie korma, goat masala and saag paneer. Spice levels are all spot-on. Please check out this wonderful family-owned, local business. Definitely the best Indian food in Toledo.

Aside from the food (which I'll get to in a minute) I think my favorite thing about the Star of India is that it is inside the old Dudley's Diner. It's such a wonderfully weird treat to walk into a kitschy '50s diner decorated with tapestries of the Taj Mahal. Aside from that, which is kind of a strange shock at first, the food is wonderful. The mulligatawny soup is a delicious, and the portion is huge, enough for two to share easily. From there, wander through the vindaloos, saag paneer, masalas, and all the other curries and sauces and you won't be close to disappointed. This is right up there with the Tandoor and the Jewel. If you go for lunch they serve a great sampler on a metal lunch tray. If you go for dinner, come hungry and prepare to take some home. If the food and atmosphere weren't enough, the family that runs the place is sweet as can be. We've been a few times and look forward to going back a few more.
(4)Katie E.
This was really great Indian food! It was just as expensive as places like the Jewel or Tandoori but it was huge portions and came with Naan which isn't included in the meals at the other places. Overall, the service was great and the food was even better.
(5)Mark P.
Excellent and authentic food, especially for northwest Ohio. If you can get past the funky diner motif, it is a reasonably priced and delicious alternative to the region's humdrum food choices.
(4)Meredith C.
Affordable, accommodating, and amazing! My husband and I ate there for the first time today, we WILL be back! The food was delicious. We each ordered the thali lunch. There was plenty of food and never ending naan. When my husband expressed interest in how the naan was made, we were invited back into the kitchen to watch, and given some extra naan to take home!
(5)Clay C.
The diner atmosphere is a little different, but the food makes up for that. The owner sat and talked with some of the customers including us. He takes a lot of pride in his work, which shows in the food. Many of the other Indian places in Toledo seem to cut corners and use cheap ingredients, but I didn't get that impression at Star of India. I had the chili chicken spiced hot, which was awesome. It came with naan and rice. The meal was enough for two people. My wife had chicken vindaloo and that was great too (I was stealing food from her plate because it was so good). I am definitely going back. The prices are a little high, but worth it because you essentially get two meals for the one because the portion is so large.
(4)Kent C.
Best Indian food in Toledo now. Masala used to be my favorite, but Star takes the cake. The lunch is affordable and comes out on a military-issue metal tray of tastiness. Naan is included along with plenty of extras. It is a must try place!
(5)Matthew K.
The food here is very good and each thali-style lunch has a good variety of food. The flavors are subtle and delicious. However, I still prefer Tandoor.
(4)Maria D.
The decor here was just too weird for me and I couldn't really get over it. The food was okay, but nothing special. However, their naan was the best bread we've had! So, it comes in third for me, with Masala first and Tandoor second.
(3)Jojo S.
Expensive and not good, my first visit there I asked the waiters opinion on what to have and it turned out to be about $22 for lunch! when the food came it turned out to be chick peas 5 different ways some of which looked like baby poop. None of it turned out to be edible for me at least so I won't be returning.
(1)Andrea C.
Delicious! Highly recommend the lamb korma! Fun atmosphere and nice owners
(5)D P.
My fave Indian place: Star of Indian.. They have specials all day, eryday.. Food and service are excellent! Saag paneer and chicken tikka masala are "can't miss" entrees. The lunch specials "thali" are great values. Make sure u ask for their frequent customer, rewards style, punch card for additional savings.. Best Indian restaurant eveRRR!!!
(5)Stuart D.
We had a party of 5 that went for dinner. We had never been there before. The sever was great. She picked the food for us. I was really good. Later the owner and the chef came out to greet us and chat for a while. It was truly an enjoyable experience.
(5)Deb K.
I've eaten here twice with my teenage son, and we both love the place. The funky diner-esque atmosphere with an Indian twist has so much character, we feel like we're on a Woody Allen movie set. The food is fresh and delicious, and has some uniquely wonderful seasonings. I've eaten Palak/Saag Paneer in several different countries, not to mention all over the States, and theirs has an unusual but addictive texture and flavor (almost reminiscent of bone marrow, although I'm sure that's not it!) The lamb with bones (a special) is succulent - soooooo saucy and good! We crave the food here and love that it's open 7 days/week. The pricing seems average, and the portions are hefty. It's nice to have a big, family-style bowl of hot fluffy rice on the table to share... The waitress (likely an owner) even gave my son an extra mango lassi on the house! We give it 4.5 stars.
(4)g p.
Star of India rules. The decor is weird and the staff is wonderful. I became a fan of the owners when they ran Masala, so finding them here was quite the treat. The prices are a little steep for my recent-college-graduate budget, but it's a treat.
(4)Tim B.
Star India actually deserves a 3.5 in my book. I will make it simple by listing the pros and cons of this place. Pros: -The entrees are phenomenal. Every chicken and lamb dish is to die for. Flavorful, exotic, delicious! -The staff and owners are friendly and accommodating. Cons: -If you order over the phone and they tell you 15 minutes, plan on 25. -Some of the dine-in side dishes were bland and lacking flavor.
(4)Aman M.
One of the best Indian food I have had in US. We visited Ohio for a couple of days and stopped by here for lunch. We had malai kofta and our friends had various thalis. Everybody loved the food and the service as well. Will definitely recommend and visit again.
(5)Amina K.
I absolutely LOVE this place! I frequently order large amounts to go and I've never been disappointed. The owners are great and I love to talk to them. The food is phenomenal! It tastes authentic and fresh, portions are generous, flavors are spot on! I've been to a few other indian restaurants in the surrounding area and they are awful. I'll never go to any other indian restaurant and waste money on bad service and food that's bland and old. Definitely come to Star of India. It's how Indian food should be!
(5)Faith C.
5 stars of India! So this isn't where you'd picture an Indian restaurant. It recently opened in an American diner. Inside, it's very clean and they've decorated it a little but it's very much an American diner. Cute and different from other Indian restaurants. The prices seem about average for dinner. It was $13 for curry that included rice and naan, which is good because the last Indian restaurant I went too you had to get the naan and rice separately. I got the chicken curry which was pretty good. I don't know much about Indian food, all I know was that it was very delicious and I enjoyed it! And it was great that they were generous with the naan and rice! The samosas are a pretty good size. I tried both the meat samosa (I think it was $3 something) and the veggie samosa (which was $1 less than the meat). The meat samosa was good but my favorite was the veggie samosa! It was SOOO amazing!
(5)Vanessa H.
I was excited when this place took over Dudley's Diner. The food was spectacular, but I didn't care much for their Mulligatawny soup. The first time was great, and the second was good too.
(4)Sasha G.
Fantastic food, perfect spice levels and deliciously crafted flavors. The wait service is excellent, the portions are generous, and the atmosphere is fun! Would definitely recommend and would visit again if I return to the area. A++
(5)Nae K.
For Sunday lunch my friend and I thought we would try something different. Neither of us had been to Star of India. What a good idea. The food was amazing! Staff was very friendly. I am new to Indian cuisine and they helped me decide what to get and embarrassingly, how to eat it. Star of India serves all entrees with an appetizer and dessert included. I got the chicken tikka masala and my friend got the garlic shrimp both were to die for. I cant wait to eat my leftovers! Highly recommend this place!
(5)Shubham S.
So I went over to their place in night, so this review is for la carte menu. I ordered onion kulcha and mutter paneer. I found the quality of mutter paneer to be not up to the mark. The taste was stale and I actually left the dish half way. The kulcha was not cooked properly and did not taste right. I had a bad experience but maybe they do other dishes better. I am not going there again.
(1)Alanna P.
Best Indian food in Toledo! Authentic and delicious. Owners are great, service is wonderful, and food is so tasty. One of the best kept secrets of Toledo.
(5)Stephanie J.
This is the best Indian cuisine I have had in Toledo. The saag paneer was so creamy and wonderfully spiced and the naan was so chewy and buttery. We also got the chicken vindaloo and the sauce was so rich and tomatoey and delicious we were almost licking the plate. Service was also top notch and super fast. I can't believe this is my first time eating here. Super impressed.
(5)Deb L.
Star of India is my favorite Indian restaurant in Toledo, and one of my favorite restaurants in the city. The decor - this place used to be a diner (one I never visited while it was open), and it still looks like a diner, with a few Indian murals here and there. It's mismatched, sure, but unique. The service is friendly and they make the food to the heat level of your choosing - they do a great job interpreting what people want. I love a lot of heat and they always get it right. The combos are an excellent deal with a great variety of sides. The pakora are wonderful, and the naan is delicious. The main dish portions are huge. The menu will please meat lovers and vegetarians alike. The mango sauce is one of my favorites. I also love the veggie korma, chana masala, aloo gobi, and my husband loves the lamb dishes. Basically I've never had anything but delicious food here!

I will admit that I am a recent fan of Indian food. I tried it many years ago and didn't enjoy it so I've stayed away. I ate at another local place a few months ago and enjoyed it. Since then I've wanted to try more Indian dishes and find dishes I like. I ate dinner at Star of India last night to celebrate a friend's birthday. They were very accommodating for a group of 8. The restaurant was not full but had a few other tables and take out customers throughout the evening. Our drinks were kept full all night. When asked for some guidance about the menu the staff was very helpful. Our group ordered a variety of dishes and everyone was happy and enjoyed the food. I had the Chicken Bhuna, which was a lunch special but was available as its similar to another dish on the dinner menu. I ordered it medium and it had great flavor and just the right amount of spice. Naan comes with the meal. I got the garlic naan, which was fantastic. It's covered in pieces of garlic. The food was prepared fresh and fast. The staff was fantastic and fun. They are friendly and make it a welcoming place. I will definitely return to Star of India.
(5)Rioghnach R.
Wonderful food, great service! Atmosphere is a cool, chill blend of a classic American diner and fun Indian accents. Our table had three chicken dishes and two vegetarian dishes, plus three types of naan, and they were all delicious. Reasonable prices, too, and a friendly, professional waitress. If you are in Toledo do stop by.
(5)yelpkee r.
Ok food. They had some sides as part of their thali that was really bad. Naan was good but overall we had a ok experience. I am from India so not to our liking.
(3)Ron R.
Today, my wife and I went to Star of India for the first time. It was the only Indian restaurant in Toledo that I had not visited. I guess I put it off, because it is located in a former classic diner building... so, I don't know... I guess I was judging a book by it's cover. Boy, was I wrong. The customer service and food here are both excellent. The waiter answered our questions thoroughly and was eager to make sure that we never sat around waiting for refills or anything else that we might need (however, he did not hover over us). The food was served very quickly after ordering... perhaps in ten to twelve minutes. My wife ordered the Vegetable Jalfreezi. It was incredible... the sauce was spicy (she ordered it with a medium spice level) and creamy. I ordered Aloo Gobi... but I did make one mistake. I ordered it at the extra spicy level. Wow, it was incredibly spicy... and I can handle very spicy food. Don't get me wrong, I loved it and the flavor was excellent. Still, be careful when ordering: only pick the highest spice level if you are craving a challenge. The appetizers and sides were wonderful as well. Star may just become our next favorite place to eat in the Glass City.
(5)Diana S.
Fabulous Indian food in a classic American diner setting! Up until recently, this building was home to a long-standing Toledo diner favorite; however, since my husband and I weren't interested in diner food, we never ate there, even though it was mere miles from our house. When we saw that the sign at Dudley's Diner proclaimed that they now offered Indian food, we were intrigued. However, once the name switched over to Star of India, we HAD to try it. The staff were friendly and helpful, and each member of the owner's family came out at various times during our meal and asked us how we were enjoying our food, and whether it was spiced correctly. The restaurant was clean and well-lit, although the diner setting with the Indian decor was a little bizarre at first. We decided to start our dinner with vegetarian pekoras; the cook accidentally made veggie samosas, instead, so we got double appetizers on the house, which was unexpected (and quite tasty). The samosas were similar to those we'd had in other local Indian restaurants, but the pekoras were surprisingly moist and flavorful -- a departure from the normally dry and crispy (overdone?) pekoras we've had elsewhere. Our meal of baigan bhartha (eggplant) and chilli chicken was perfectly spiced: medium was just about perfect for us, although next time we might request medium-hot. Our meals came with rice and naan, although we did notice that all meals on the menu do not automatically include naan (those from the tandoori oven, for example). Normally, we might have been able to polish off both dishes, but the double appetizer had put us over the top, so we took some home with us. Here's hoping that Toledo really can support four Indian restaurants in such close proximity to one another. We loved our initial visit to the Star of India, and we'll definitely be back!

I was finally able to check out Star of India. After reading so many five star reviews of this place, I've gotta' say my first visit was pretty exciting. I wasn't disappointed either - Star of India kicks ass! The owners are very friendly and accommodating. I was able to order a dish that wasn't even on the menu - roghan josh, extra spicy. Man, it was awesome! I could feel little beads of sweat forming on my scalp from the chili. I love it when a restaurant delivers on spiciness. The only downside to dining here - if you consider it a downside - is they don't serve wine. They do have a couple of Indian beers available though, along with the standard fair of domestics. I've been to a lot of Indian restaurants both Internationally and in the US, and I've gotta' say this is the best Indian food that I've ever had - and the best value for the money. The ingredients taste so fresh. All the spices are well balanced, with just the right amount of kick. Even the lamb in my curry was tender and juicy. Their naan is made very fresh and authentic, and they serve plenty of it with the meals. I'll definitely be a returning customer.
(5)Sumeet B.
One of the worst experiences at an Indian restuarant. I ordered Lamb Rogan Josh and Chicken Kadai for takeout. When I got back home the lamb tasted like Lamb Tikka Masala, and the Chicken tasted like more of a koorma dish. I called the restaurant back and spoke to the owner. She agreed that there is very little difference between Lamb Rogan Josh and Lamb Tikka Masala. Anyone who's Indian or is familiar with Indian food know there is a big difference. The chef should be fired. What a waste of time and money. Do not go to this place if your looking for authentic indian food. Stay away!
(1)Ashley H.
I frequent Indian restaurants, and this is one of the best in the Midwest. The food is authentic and the flavors are incredible. Definitely try the saag paneer and tiki masala! Both are fantastic. *side note- the fine owners of this establishment will turn up the heat of you ask. As a fan of spicy food, I recommend you do!
(5)PJ S.
It's clean. Interesting. Friendly. But, hard to find a something positive to say about the food - papadum were tasteless and saag gosht was in a salty, brown sauce akin to canned, supermarket gravy. Pretty hard to find good Indian anywhere nearby. Oh well
(2)Brent L.
Great Indian food is hard to come by in the Toledo area, but Star of India knows what they're doing. I had chicken tikka masala prepared spicy, and my wife had the chicken curry mild. We can definitely put our stamp of approval on their classic Indian dishes, and are excited to go back and venture through the other menu items. Really great service as well.
(5)Nancy C.
I tried calling in a take-out order one time and the lady who answered the phone put me on hold and never got back on the line with me again (I waited for a good 5 minutes at least). I tried hanging up to call again and the line was busy because I was still technically on the phone with her (and she never hung up). Very frustrating. But I was determined to get Indian food that night so I drove into the restaurant and physically went in to place the order myself...and to remind her to hang up the phone so other people can call in...In their defense, it was a busy night and they appeared a little short-staffed. But no apology and no guilt for inconveniencing me whatsoever. So I had to awkwardly sit at the bar and wait for an additional 20 minutes for my food to be ready. Food was good, but pricey. Overall experience left a sour taste in my mouth.
(2)Katie H.
The food was decent for the area and the service was nice. I got he shrimp tandoori and a friend got the veggie korma which was quite good. Three stars because the interior feels like a diner and I expected the food to be a little bit better
(3)Toney B.
The location is an old diner. However inside was clean. I ate here for lunch and got an entire meal for $10.99. I had the Lamb Korma and it came with 2 vegetable dishes, a small appetizer and desert along with some naan. For the price the food was good. It was not the best I've had. The korma seemed bland of all spices. Service at this location was also good.
(3)Pete P.
The food, flavors, and service are really great here! Me and a buddy were tooling around Toledo and wanted to go somewhere we hadn't been before, so we ended up here. My buddy has been to India and gave this place his stamp of approval. The diner look on the outside is kind of quirky but hey, the food is why you go to a restaurant, right? We got the Chicken Saag and the Lamb Vindaloo along with the Naan basket. Everything was extremely tasty. The servers were attentive and made sure we had everything we needed. I needed plenty of water as my vindaloo was quite hot and spicy!! There was enough for some to take home and the leftovers were even better the next day! A score for T-Town to be sure!!
(5)Matt M.
Good everything. Very casual. Ungodly amount of food for the price. Go there!!!!!
(5)Sean H.
My wife and I were on road trip back to Columbus after an overnight in Michigan. It was time for lunch but neither of us wanted the usual suspects that are found near interstate exits. Yelp! to the rescue! After a bit of a search I pulled up Star of India and asked my smart box for directions. Less than 10 minutes from 475, it's not really out of the way. We pulled up and were surprised to see it housed in a 50's style diner. Bonus for atmosphere. Our arrival time was late lunch, ~2pm, so we were told to sit where we liked. Our server provided menus promptly and took our drink order. I ordered a lamb curry thali. My wife ordered chicken channa. Naan was brought to the table. My curry was flavorful with an okay amount of spice. (They can clearly make it hotter if that is your thing.) The lamb was tender. The lentils were a bit bland. The "baklava" like dessert was light with a touch of sweetness. My mango lassi was refreshing. The portions were reasonable if a little too big. We will definitely stop again. Don't be afraid to venture away from the highway on a road trip.
(4)Alaina R.
I just recently ate here for the third (or fourth?) time, so I feel as if I can give a pretty solid review. First of all, and this gets mixed reviews from other Yelpers I'm sure, is the decor. I absolutely love it. It's like going back to a 1950s diner but with the interesting juxtaposition of the Indian food wafting from the back. It's a little kitschy, but I like it. The place is very well kept - clean bathrooms, floors, and tables. Overall, a very good start. A little background on myself... I used to live in Cincinnati. A little known fact about Cincinnati is the crazy amazing Indian food dispersed throughout the city. The Indian food in this area is truly, truly phenomenal, so comparing anything else may be a little unfair. However, this place stacks up pretty well. I'm a chicken tikka masala type of girl, and this place does it pretty good. Very different from what I'm used to in the heart of Cincy, but the flavor profile is there and delicious. I love going in there for lunch. You get this wonderful, portioned plate with different samplings of Indian fare, including dessert. The portion is great and it's pretty cheap considering the amount of food you get. Finally, the service is wonderful. I've had a different server each time, and they have all been attentive and super friendly. It's almost like you're apart of the family when you're there (I hate that phrase, but it's very true). The chef is also very sweet. Today he came to our table and made sure we were satisfied. Today was the best experience I've had with this place, so it's definitely on an upswing.
(4)Maria W.
Great food and amazing service every time. One of the best Indian food restaurants in town. You must check it out.
(5)Yoie L.
I was craving indian food for lunch today and was eager to try a new Indian restaurant after eating at tandoor a few months ago. Boy was I happy to stumble upon star of india! The lunch special was amazing! Everything is from 7.99-9.99, which is reasonably priced. The nann was fresh and buttery. Best of all, the waitress kept bringing you more for free! I had the chicken vindaloo and I'm happy they made it spicy. This is not your American spicy; it actually burns your mouth a little bit but it's so good! The lamb korma is heavenly. It has the perfect amount of spice and yogurt...super creamy and the lamb melts in your mouth. Chai is made to order and I can definitely drink 2-3 cups of those. I love the friendly waitress. I believe she's the owner. She is really sweet and attentive and you can tell she loves her restaurant. I will definitely be back.
(5)Daniel F.
Star of India is a very good Indian restaurant. The staff was very friendly, including the waitress and even the chef came out to see how our food was. I got the chicken mahkani, and it was very good, but for the price I almost wish I would have gotten a little bit more. My entree was about $10 and was served in the 5 section serving platter that the pictures have, but I just wish there would have been more of the main entree. The sides were good, which were cucumbers, dal, and some sort of dessert. It's a good place to go if you know Indian food and know what you are ordering, I would recommend it.
(4)Mark B.
From scratch, flavorful, plentiful dishes. Naan is terrific. Friendly staff. Ambiance is odd since it's an old diner, but who cares! Price was on the higher side for three lunches. I'd return, however.
(4)Mike P.
EXCELLENT Indian food. For quite a while, I hesitated to try this place, because some of my Indian colleagues said the food here was "not authentic." However, my personal experience with Star of India simply reinforced what I've always known. That is, I don't really care if food is "authentic" or not, as long as it tastes good to me. (After all, live monkey brains are an "authentic" Cambodian delicacy, are they not? Or is that just a myth? Hmmm. I don't remember.) Authentic or not, the food here is delicious. I've eaten a total of six different entrées here, (see my tip, check ins and photos for more specifics) and every single one has been fantastic. The service, and the conversation with the owners, was also great. Additionally, Star of India caters, and soon, they will deliver. Also kind of cool is that lunch in served in a tray (thali). The last time that I ate a meal out of such a tray, was when I was in grade school. Or maybe it was when I spent the night in jail. Again, I don't remember. Star of India gets my vote for "best Indian restaurant located in a building that used to be a diner." In fact it gets my vote for best Indian food in Toledo.
(5)Razoun R.
Finally gave this place a try. I wanted to give them a higher rating but it came back to a three star. Let me break it down. The ambiance is that of a an old diner. It's not a big deal. But it doesn't represent anything Indian. They really do much on the decor when they bought the place. The service was great. The lady was very friendly and welcoming. She also helped out with the menu. We were the only ones there so I can't really judge. But cups were full all the time and service was fast. Cleanliness. Meh. For a place that was empty it should have been way cleaner. Bathrooms were average. Food. Now here's where the lower rating is. Not sure if it was just our luck, because the other reviewers love it here. Now with that said, being familiar with authentic Indian food, the food here was okay. The flavors were almost the same on most dishes and did not taste like the dishes I'm used to. Freshness wise, also, did not taste fresh. The sides tasted a bit old and the main dishes lacked that je ne sais quoi. Not a lot of deep flavors. The naan bread was fresh. Doey and charred just right. Samosas were good. Just a bit too mushy for my taste. Price. Seemed like it was a good price on the menu but we ended up dropping $50 for two lunch dishes, a dinner dish (which is actually smaller than the lunch dish), 8 samosas and a drink. High prices for the quality we got and the amount. Would I come back here again? Probably. If I'm on that side of town. I'd watch what I'm doing price wise though.
(3)Lorne N.
On my second visit, having tried a few dishes, I've decided I like this place a lot. Great food, awesome, friendly service. Prompt and courteous. Excellent bread & vegetarian options. I'll be back again.
(4)Mandar P.
A rare Indian restaurant where a Thali or lunch special is better than A la Carte. Their garlic chicken is delicious.

I was really surprised about this restaurant. The outside of the business looks like a 50's diner, so I was really skeptical. I was impressed with the quality of food and will come back.
(4)Jay K.
Only been here for lunch and I have never been disappointed. Their portions are large and I never am able to finish all the fixings that come with my entree. I've tried a few entrees, various kormas, and tikka masala, and they all are delicious! The naan is always soft (never burned) and served piping hot! The wonderful woman that waits on the tables is polite, attentive, friendly and gracious--she makes it her priority that we are having a nice dining experience! The ambience is retro diner and the booths are immaculate! Love this place!!!

Awesome food! Today was my first time trying this place- I got chicken Tikka. Y-u-m. Will definently be back!

Toledo is blessed with several very good Indian restaurants, and the Star of India is no exception. Have you ever ordered garlic naan at an Indian restaurant and, while you might be able to detect the aroma of garlic, there is very little in the way of flavor? At the Star of India, garlic coats their naan like flakes of coconut. Midway through our meal, having ordered our personal standards (chicken vindaloo and chicken saag), we wondered if this restaurant was more authentic than other offerings in town, or a deeply Americanized version. It was out of sheer curiosity we asked. At this point, we didn't really care. The flavors here are aggressive and the portions are large. We finally just put it point blank to the waitress who explained she married into an Indian family and this is what they cook at home. They also own a restaurant in Ann Arbor called Raji Rani. While I can't vouch for authenticity, my taste buds can vouch for the flavors. We're so glad we haphazardly ended up here today. I'm not going to go tit-for-tat as far as what elements of this meal make it stand-out versus the other fine Indian restaurants in town, but I would feel comfortable writing that it would be difficult to choose any other Indian restaurant over this one. Also, we were the only table in the joint on a Sunday. Normally, in my experience, restaurants tend to put out better food when they are busy. We walked away very impressed.

I come from a family of very good cooks dating back a few generations in Vietnam. I have to say, this is one of the few restaurants we keep coming back to. Every time we come back to Toledo, this is our go-to restaurant. We are partial to Punjabi style Indian food. You can tell the food is made with love. Just their naan alone is super good. Wish this place was in Cincinnati. Servers are great. They go out of their way to make sure you are happy with the food. I like that it is in an old diner - it's unique.
(5)James D.
Interesting to see an Indian resturant in an old style American Dinner, friendly staff, felt welcome. We had a variety of the samplers offered everything was good, but didn't care for the lentil soup.
(4)Paul M.
Very delicious food at a great price. For less than $10 you can get as much food as most people will eat in a buffet. The service is great and the lady who cooks is really cool. The naan is fresh and hot. There are also some cool paintings on the walls.
(5)Lisa M.
The food here was very good. Service was friendly and quick. Our server was very sweet. We will come here often now that we've found this gem. Try the Lamb Curry, it was great. My husband loved his Mushroom Chicken.
(5)M W.
Awesome, wonderful ,delicious, Indian...diner? Yup, good to eat in or take out. Service is amazing, food is better, decor is rad. Eat there.

I feel bad that I've taken so long to update this review, but it was badly overdue! My first time here honestly did not impress me for some reason. However, I've now lost count how many times I've been here, surely more than 20, and my fiancé and I always love it here! The family that owns the place are there all the time and they're all fantastic. Both father and son cook and it's hard to say who's better, but the food from both is always excellent. Be careful though because if you order Indian spicy, it's gonna hurt. You really can't go wrong but if you want my advice, let Jesse (the son) surprise you. Whatever he makes will be delicious, and different every time. I'd like to give a recommendation on something specific to try but it's really all very good. Ask one of the family for a suggestion and just go with whatever they say...you won't be sorry.

I thought this place was alright. I went here with a small group of friends in the beginning of summer. It wasn't crowded so we were seated right away. The decor is interesting and cute. I liked that it kept the diner style. I ordered the garlic nan and chicken tikka masala which is pretty much the only thing I ever order. The garlic nan was delicious. The chicken tikka masala was ok but was prepared differently than I've seen everywhere else. They were a little pricier than most Indian restaurants I've been to

I found them! This family who runs the Star of India is the same family who used to be involved with another Indian restaurant in town. I went to the other restaurant and didn't see them there and wondered what happened. Now I know, and I'm glad they're back. Being a Punjabi guy who grew up on Indian (particularly Punjabi food) and not being from this part of the country, it was tough to find quality food that reminded you of home. Would I say I am an Indian food snob - no - but I would say I can tell a great meal from a good or okay-rated meal. Would I say this is the very best Indian food at a restaurant that I've had? No, but I would say it is very close! They go the extra mile for you - there are plenty of people working to take care of tables that you aren't waiting around long for anything. They are quick to move, and provide great service. If you don't know what to get, take their recommendations as I overhead them giving the table behind me some, and they were spot on. (If you're looking for the best Indian food I've had - you have to go to England or New York City in search of the hole in the wall joints). All in all, great experience and they have my repeat business for sure. (Also, there's something about an American diner and Indian restaurant that really touches my soul...)
(4)Kaitlyn P.
This place is amazeballz. The service was as good as the food. My waitress couldn't have been more helpful when I was trying to order from their unfamiliar menu. The cook/owner even came out to make sure that we loved our food. I will definitely be back and I highly recommend it to anyone that is sick of Toledo's applbee's-esque dining.
(5)Gulzeb N.
I went here for lunch, and ordered chicken vindaloo thaali, "Indian spicy". I received a thaali which contained a naan, rice, aaloo mattar, lobia, a chicken thigh, and of course the vindaloo. The food was great, apart from the naan, which I prefer more fluffy. The service and atmosphere were great as well. Loved the place, and if was living in Toledo instead of just visiting, I would be a regular.
(5)Jill L.
Good Indian food. Good service. Nice quiet place to eat. Love their Chicken and Lamb saag. A bit expensive, if you get sides and appetisers, but worth it on occassion.
(4)Brook J.
Delicious food made just the way you like it! Amazing service! I would totally go back.
(4)Ashley M.

(4)Maria D.
The decor here was just too weird for me and I couldn't really get over it. The food was okay, but nothing special. However, their naan was the best bread we've had! So, it comes in third for me, with Masala first and Tandoor second.
(3)Ryan B.
(4)Jojo S.
(4)Chirjiv A.
I went there once. I do not like the decor/ambiance here. Also, the service was not very good. When asked whats the difference between special and regular menu...all I got was..."special is special!" Food other wise was good. But sadly I remember the service more than the food when asked about this place!
(3)CJ P.
Great customer service. Trainees were really attentive. Food was decent, but not as authentic as I've had in other restaurants. Decor was odd-- looked like a 1950s retro diner.
(3)V F.
The lunch thali is a great way to try different food items with your chosen entree. Most meals come with naan and rice. Their naan is great. I've enjoyed sampling other's dishes, but my usual is the chicken saag. The sauce is creamy and delicious and the chicken is tender. Servers are kind and helpful. Meals are spiced to your preference and portions are large enough for leftovers. Star of India is worth repeat visits for many great meals.
(4)Adam G.
Not only is Star of India home to the best Indian cuisine in the area, the family who owns it are genuine stars as well. We had a tragic loss in the family, and they helped cater to a large quantity of people on very short notice. The only feedback I can give them is positive in all respects. Thanks again and I'm looking forward to my next incredible experience at Star of India.
(5)Kallie W.
What a great find! Lunch special is an amazing deal and the taste is outstanding! Friendly staff. Wish I was from around here so I could enjoy this more often!
(5)Katie H.
The food was decent for the area and the service was nice. I got he shrimp tandoori and a friend got the veggie korma which was quite good. Three stars because the interior feels like a diner and I expected the food to be a little bit better
(3)Ashley H.
Oh well
(2)Nancy C.
(2)Toney B.
(5)Sarah P.
(5)Alaina R.
(5)Jay K.
Only been here for lunch and I have never been disappointed. Their portions are large and I never am able to finish all the fixings that come with my entree. The wonderful woman that waits on the tables is polite, attentive, friendly and gracious--she makes it her priority that we are having a nice dining experience! The ambience is retro diner and the booths are immaculate! Love this place!!!

(4)Michael M.
(5)Huong D.
(5)Chirjiv A.

Great customer service. Trainees were really attentive. Food was decent, but not as authentic as I've had in other restaurants. Decor was odd-- looked like a 1950s retro diner.

What a great find! Lunch special is an amazing deal and the taste is outstanding! Friendly staff. Wish I was from around here so I could enjoy this more often!

Stay away!

One of the best Indian food I have had in US. We visited Ohio for a couple of days and stopped by here for lunch. We had malai kofta and our friends had various thalis. Everybody loved the food and the service as well. Will definitely recommend and visit again.

I was excited when this place took over Dudley's Diner. The food was spectacular, but I didn't care much for their Mulligatawny soup. The first time was great, and the second was good too.

Fantastic food, perfect spice levels and deliciously crafted flavors. The wait service is excellent, the portions are generous, and the atmosphere is fun! Would definitely recommend and would visit again if I return to the area. A++

Ok food. They had some sides as part of their thali that was really bad. Naan was good but overall we had a ok experience. I am from India so not to our liking.

From scratch, flavorful, plentiful dishes. Naan is terrific. Friendly staff. Ambiance is odd since it's an old diner, but who cares! Price was on the higher side for three lunches. I'd return, however.

I was really surprised about this restaurant. The outside of the business looks like a 50's diner, so I was really skeptical. I was impressed with the quality of food and will come back.
