Terrific American restaurant in Toledo. We have dined there for almost 2 years, and have always had great dining experiences there. The service is excellent; for example, servers are typically super prompt about getting drinks refilled. Food has good variety and high quality. Alexander's has a great elegant, modern, hip atmosphere. We love the veggie burger, Israeli couscous, and french fries best!

Very over-rated; poor service; and very average food. Many other places much better

I have very few philosophies in life, but one of the ones I usually adhere to is to avoid eating at chain restaurants. Well this place makes me a feel a little less philosophical. The place feels classy and intimate, but definitely not fussy. The prices are good for what you get. (IE: good quality and HUGE portions.) But what really gets me and my husband going are the veggie burgers. They are perfection. (I should note we are not vegetarians.) At this point, I see little reason to order anything but this divine burger when eating here. A side of their tiny fork fries or smashed potatoes never hurt though!

Food- Outstanding. I had the prime rib and it was made exactly to my specifications. The food was served hot. Presentation was non-existent but that is ok as the food made up for it. Service- nice but server wasn't very knowledgeable about the drinks or food. We were seated in a booth in the bar area thus one would think the servers would know there drinks....server didn't know what a dry white wine meant and when one of the people asked for a martini she asked if she wanted it dirty. My friend asked what that meant and she didn't know. For the type of ambiance and the food I think the girl waiting on us was well out of her league. The ambiance is really nice. Like another person stated, you can go dressed up or casual and will feel comfortable either way. The noise level was very minimal and the lighting fantastic. Woud I go back? Absolutely. Why? The food!

I tried the veggie burger once and its so good I've had a hard time trying anything else. I also love the orzo and wild rice side. If they ever have the Tuscan steak special I also recommend that. Oh and the acorn suash...

I'm incredibly impressed with this place, considering it is a chain restauarant (I'm typically never a fan of chain restaurants and generally prefer local restaurants). You wouldn't know it was a chain, based on consistently fantastically food and great service. I appreciate a restaurant where you can go in, get a bottle of wine, and actually sit and enjoy your dinner, and not feel like you are being rushed out, or uncomfortable because the host/wait staff is waiting/staring at you until you leave. You do get what you pay for; it's not Applebee's so don't expect to walk out of the restaurant for $25 - $30 bucks, tip included. However, I did not find it unreasonable to pay about $90 for a bottle of wine, the fantastic queso appetizer, a filet dinner, and a prime rib dinner (Ok, I lied... $115 including tip). Steak dinners come with a salad (you want the house, or Alex salad, trust me - crumbled bacon, tiny croutons, honey butter drizzled croissant - it doesn't get better than this (but be careful because it can fill you up quickly), and they are more than accomodating for any dietary restrictions you have - they had no problem substituting sauteed spinach instead of the loaded baked potato. So while most budgets will not allow you to dine here all the time, it is the best choice in Toledo for a special occassion (birthday, anniversary, office gathering). I'll be back (in less than a week, thank goodness)!

Excellent!! Steak and wine done right! Compares very well against steakhouses in Los Angeles. May be high-priced for some locals, as I see from the reviews, but it's priced very well for what I'm used to.

WONDERFUL FOOD EVERY SINGLE TIME. Great ambiance and they have awesome (and very quick) service! everything from their appetizers to their salads is just great and you can taste the quality of the food. I usually am not a fan of chain restaurants but this one is an exception for me!

The food was good, but not orgasmic. My steak was ordered Medium Well and cooked Well. Not too big of a deal. The $12 Two-Swallow Martini was a Ripoff; tantamount to a sexual assault on my wallet. I have paid $10 for mixed drinks and martinis in Ann Arbor before at several venues and they were MAN Drinks... not sissy. two swallow drinks. Mike P suggested that Angelos Northwood Villa in Erie may be a better bet when it comes to Priime Rib. I say that it would have been a better bet and worth the drive on several levels. I liked my meal here "ok" and my check was $87 for two... pre tip. HOWEVER, I have had orgasmic meals at Angelos, more drinks, stronger man drinks, bigger portions, my fav liquor in stock (Yukon Jack) , and a general feel good about it...... for $92 pre tip for two. In conclusion: Many other places to go to for a more satisfying feeling after a $100 + post tip dining check. And the $12 two swallow Martini is insult enough to keep me away.

Watch your car. Mine was broken into in the back parking lot. They don't have cameras that monitor the entire parking lot. The former manager Alan was wonderful as was waitress Jackie O. Both have left and the service and management isn't as good. Food is inconsistent.

Terrible service we have come here 3 times to give them a chance but Everytime we get bad service. Sad to say we are not coming back again. They brought us the wrong wine and the waitress never came to check on us. Poor poor service!

The warm carrot cake is all the reason to eat here! A friend and I were dining here for dinner. The intimate ambiance of the restaurant was very calming and quiet. We were greeted and seated immediately. Everything is pristine from the tables to the layout. It is very inviting. Our service here was excellent. Brandi did an outstanding job throughout the evening. She was very attentive and friendly. We started off with the Spinach con Queso. A huge bowl was delivered to the table with a basket of chips. This was wonderful. Very creamy and cheesy. The flavor was great. Of course we didn't leave any in the dish! For my meal I chose the Country Club with the loaded baked potato. Huge sandwich... huge potato. The sandwich was delicately toasted. It was piled with meat and toppings perfectly. i would definitely order this again. The baked potato was delicious with it's loaded goodness of cheese, bacon and sour cream. For the cherry on top, my friend convinced me to order their carrot cake. She had eaten one prior and said it was the best she'd ever had. Well, I would have to agree. The huge piece of cake was easily split between us. It was warm and perfect. The cream cheese icing was almost melting all around it. If you come to J Alexanders, I'd start with the carrot cake first. You'll love it! This restaurant offers quality service and quality food in a great setting. I hope to make it a tradition whenever i'm in town.

We are saying goodbye to this place after many times there. Had dinner there last night. Prices are raised again. $12 for martinis -- and this was the final nail in the coffin: I ordered a Maker's Mark on the rocks. I received what looked to be about an ounce in a glass with three ice cubes. You'll notice the picture. For this I was charged $11.50. I complained to the manager. She couldn't have cared less. "That's the way we pour high end liquors," she said. I didn't ask for 30 year old Macallan. I ordered a fairly common mid-range bourbon. Take a look at that picture again...ELEVEN DOLLARS AND FIFTY CENTS.

I'm not the biggest fan of chain restaurants, though J. Alexander's is a pretty small one at that. Last night we satisfied my partner's vague obsession with this place, and it was pretty much as I remembered it: slightly overpriced food served in an environment with less soul than most hotel lobbies. I had the club sandwich. For $13.00 it's not even a double-decker (and therefore not really a club sandwich), although they use good quality meat and cheese. The server recommended the "not your typical" mac and cheese. It was pretty good. My partner got the fish tacos. He was satisfied, but I think I adjusted his expectations going in: the food's better than average, slightly over priced, but they're pretty consistent. He thought there was too much coleslaw or something. Meh. His problem. Maybe I should have tried a steak or something, but Shorty's has been slaying in that department so hardcore it would have been unfair to order it here. Service is killer, unobtrusive, and professional. Strike the word "refill" from your vocabulary as you enter, for your drink will never go empty here. They run a tight ship. Overall, this is the kind of place you might want to consider taking extended family members or large groups, as there truly is something for everyone.

J Alexanders is my constant GO-To restaurant in Toledo. The service and food are always top notch. I think I only ordered one thing ever that I was less than pleased with. I have never had issue with the service at all. They run a tight ship here. My favorites at J Alexanders are as follows: The Spinach Queso/Chips/Salsa are out of this world. I will often come here for a glass or two of wine and just stuff myself with this. The Queso has little bits of spinach in it and is just cheesy and tangy enough. The Salsa here is a star! Its delightfully chunky and the flavors are always fresh and bright. I always order this when I come. I am obsessed with the prime rib dip sandwich. The prime rib is always rare/med rare and juicy. its a simple sandwich with savory aujus, but it is wonderful when the meat can really shine in a french dip where it is often greasy and overcooked. I often get this with their skinny fries or with the amazing Orzo and wild rice salad. Speaking of Salads, J Alexanders has the best, garlicky, crunchy Cesar salad around. It will give you mad garlic breath though, so bring a mint or an understanding significant other. Obviously the steaks and prime rib area good. I think the Ribs are the best around because the BBQ sauce they make here is the best around. My boyfriend orders martinis with tons of blue cheese olives here. He swears they make them in house (the olives that is) we have searched high and low to find comparable olives for purchase and none compare. Always save room for dessert, the carrot cake is heavenly with warm cream cheese icing. Yum!

I come here every year for my birthday to eat Swordfish. It may or may not be close to being an endangered species. I'm not sure, but it's once a year so... lol Anyway, every time I've been, it's always been a great experience. When it's not my birthday, and I'm coming just for their regular menu, I'm usually pleased. The Israeli couscous is just to die for! My family loves their carrot cake too. Their servers are usually very attractive too. I'm not sure if that's on purpose or not, but I've noticed. One major complaint I have is that sometimes, they over-season their vegetables which is a HUGE no-no. If you don't mind spending extra money for quality food and service, then this is the place for you. They also have a decent wine selection!

I ask my father-in-law where I can take him for dinner. His answer "I can do steak." No problem, except I'm visiting from SoCal and don't know anything about Toledo area Ohio. I look up a couple places and took a chance on J. Alexander's. We're dressed causal but go in to be greeted by 3 hostesses in all black dresses and pearls. We felt totally underdressed after looking at the dimmed but elegant space. But-- most people were dressed casual as we were. Laura was our waitress and got us started with a couple Porter beers and the Spinach con Queso appetizer which was great. Entrees come with a house or Caesar salad. The salads were big and made me not want to eat it all to save room for my NY Strip. Well that didn't happen. A simply Caesar but a very tasty one, so I ate it all. My steak was great. My Not Your Ordinary Mac and Cheese side was not. I couldn't quite put my finger on it, but the taste was simply not good. Almost had a kind of sweet aspect to it. I had about a quarter of it and left the rest. The service was EXCELLENT. Laura came by a few times and was extremely efficient. More importantly - I think we had about. 5-6 different servers who brought us out different things. (Water, salad, appetizers) So I was almost expecting the lack of continuity with the servers to lead to something getting messed up. It didn't happen. Great job. Very pleased. Would certainly go again.

Excellent! Service, hospitality, and food! All excellent! Having been to many steakhouses in the NYC area (lived in northern nj for over 35 years) this ranks right up there! Price was on point. We had the Chicken Pasta Soup which was delicious. My wife order the Ribeye and I had the Filet.::both cooked perfect. Will definitely be back!

The 4-5 star reviews for this place is a perfect example of people in Toledo giving rave reviews for anything expensive. J Alexanders at one time was a decent place but has slowly become a ponderous and loathsome behemoth with a pension for pretentious attitude. Overpriced with marginal attention to detail and less toward service, this place is a must skip. Low country style chicken? How about chicken strips. Streaks lean toward marbled, with sinew! Save your cash.

Been eating here for around 15 years. Average twice month. When we 1st started, food was ALWAYS consistant. However, the last several times we have been, our steaks were dry & tough. But they are always willing to make things right. Just seems to be happening a lot lately. I used to get the rattlesnake pasta which was "PHENOMENAL!", but 1 bite of my wife's steak maui, I was hooked. Still able to get the city club salad even though it is not on the menu, "My all time favorite salad!", but not a fan of crouton change, "the old ones were the BEST!" Love the fries. Carrot cake is beyond description, "save room & don't leave without trying a piece!" Service is "ALWAYS AWESOME!" Also if I could recommend, "bring croissants back!" To be honest, due to the inconsistencies lately, Mancy's has been our go to place. Sorry J's :-(

I've never had a bad meal here.. The rattlesnake pasta is delicious and even more so if you add shrimp. The steaks are great. The chicken is juicy and seasoned wonderfully. Great place for a good meal.. Drinks are kind of pricey but it is a step up from casual dining so that is to be expected.

I revisited this restaurant yesterday, excited after my previous visit. I would swear it was two different places. I was with a large group on sweetest day but we were seated within an hour which was great. The drink order was taken right away but then after we had discussed which appetizers to order we noticed the other end of our table already being served their appetizers before ours had even been ordered! Ok, so that was odd but we moved on and just skipped ordering them. For dinner I ordered the Cypress Salad and loaded baked potato. The baked potato looked good, but as I dug in I only ate about a quarter of the potato because that was about all the "loaded" toppings covered. There was very little cheese and bacon on it, and mostly just filled in with a gigantic glob of sour cream. Moving onto the cypress salad. The chicken was good, but the salad was literally just a mixed bagged salad you can buy at any grocery store. The menu said it came with bacon, and to their credit in my leftovers today I did find one small bacon piece but that was it. The mixed greens had huge chunks of cabbage and shredded carrots, like I said just store bought quality. The dressing left a bad taste in my mouth. I didn't even attempt the eat the tomatoes as they looked squishy and watery as soon as the plate was set down, I just put those on my abandoned potato. When I requested a box I was thinking I might enjoy it more with a sweeter dressing I had at home but that didn't help either. And the lettuce didn't stay at all in the 8 hours it was in my refrigerator, which just makes me assume I'm correct in my opinion that it was poured from a bag bought at a grocery store. One of the people at our table got the Maui steak. He said he was under the assumption since it was a pineapple marinade it would just have the flavoring of the pineapple. It came out closer to a pineapple soup poured onto his steak, he couldn't even finish it. When the bills came, they were all messed up. Remember how nobody had taken our appetizer order on my end of the table? That didn't stop them from charging us for them. When my friend informed the waitress she was over charged $13 for an app she didn't order the waitress just stared at her and said "ok". No apology or anything. My friend had paid in cash so already figured in the tip and everything minus the appetizer she didn't order and she explained that to the waitress. Our waitress didn't even take the bill from her to fix it she just left it sitting on the table with the money. And we knew who the appetizer belonged to so she ended up eating that $13 when we would've been happy to help her out with which bill it belonged on had she not been rude about it. Lastly, my other friend had asked for a certain kind of wine and upon getting the bill saw that they didn't give her what she wanted, but instead had given her the most expensive wine on the list, which wouldn't have even been a big deal except with everything else it just added to the overall atmosphere of the dinner. I will think twice about visiting again, which is very disappointing after how excited I was about my first visit.

Five years ago, better yet even two years ago, I would have given this place five stars. But let me tell you this, if you're looking for excellent service with excellent food (as per their prices, that's what they should be offering) avoid this place. Over the years their portions have shrunk in size as their prices continue to go up. And to top this all off their service was hit or miss and now it's a constant miss. After dropping over $200 for lunch (5 adults entrees with appetizers and three pops) the manager came to pick up plates. Heads right to a plate my son was eating from, while a pile of dirty dishes was sitting I front him. We politely let him know that my son is still munching on the chips. His response? You ready for this? "You know what, why don't you hand me the plates that you're done with since I don't seem to know which ones you're still eating from.". Mind blown. Then he comes to me, sarcastically asks me if I'm done eating my empty salad plate (that had scraps of lettuce in it). We just looked at each other as he left the table. When we asked our waitress who he was, turns out he was not the manager, he was the general manager. Wow. I had family come in from out of town and they couldn't wait to eat here. Half of us lost our appetite and our afternoon was ruined. Thank you J. Alexander's General Manager. Good luck keeping this place afloat if this is the service you're going to offer. Oh for those of you who don't care about the service and go there for the food; food was a three and a half. Meat was super tender and fresh. So was the salsa. Smashed potatoes and fries were over cooked and dry. And their to-die-for carrot cake was just ok (was our absolute favorite). Compare price to quality and service, this place is a fail. What a shame.

Although, in general, I don't spend too much time occupying Wall Street, I usually try to avoid expensive, large-chain, corporate-type restaurants, and that's exactly what J Alexander's is. HOWEVER, other than the fact that this place has about as much character as the McDonald's accross the street, AND, other than the fact that there are much better local offerings, I can't find much fault with J Alexander's. We've always gotten good food and good service, in a nice-enough atmosphere. My wife believes JA's has the best prime rib in the city. (Personally, I prefer Angelo's Northwood Villa, for prime rib). Intermittently, they do seem to have a problem getting my steak cooked right. This last time in, my filet was over cooked (well done is still edible, but "medium well" means MEDIUM WELL, dammit!) The manager, however, made things right... She offered to bring me another steak. I declined. She then offered to pay for it. Again, l declined. She then offered to buy us dessert and another round of drinks. I accepted! If you're like me, you prefer to buy (and eat) local. But if you don't mind "eating corporate," once in a while, J Alexander's is a pretty decent place.

Can't believe I didn't write a review of this place last summer as we visited several times. When I grew up here, I remember not being very impressed with J. Alexander's. It's what people in Toledo considered "fancy" but was a chain that I also had a disappointing experience with in college in Cincinnati. C'est la vie. But last summer, when we happened to be in town a bunch, we settled on this place when the BF wanted American food and I just wanted A/C and a cocktail in a more upscale place. Much to my surprise, I really liked everything. The booths were comfy, the decor pretty modern, the menu much more inventive than it had been in the past. The cocktails were especially interesting and delicious---the last one I ordered was served with dry ice. I'm kinda obsessed with the the Cypress salad, which is enormous, particularly the cornbread croutons. I crave that on the regular, and order it whenever we're in town. The BF liked his rattlesnake pasta as I recall. The Caesar salad was also really good, and really big. We were both bigs fans of the croissants for the table. I really don't have anything the criticize. Prices were pretty average, food was good, clientele was more upscale, a bit older. Booths were roomy and comfortable. Service was good, location is great. We'll def be back next time we're in town.

My wife and I eat here at least every couple weeks. Always great food and super service. Yesterday, it seemed to be taking an unusually long time to get our entrees. We didn't mind, as we were visiting with an out of town friend whom we have not seen in ages, so barely noticed. Finally we realized it was getting close to an hour, and the manager came over, and realized our ticket was lost. They could have simply got the meal right out, and offered a free appetizer, or one of our entrees free, but instead the comped the WHOLE MEAL for the entire table! While totally not necessary, this type of service is rarely seen, and of course will be remembered.

Perfect for my honey's birthday dinner! Firstly, I was surprised to learn that the Toledo area is not booming with restaurant options - apparently my expectation was high. The options are quite limited and places close early- check first if visiting area. With that said, we came here on a Weds. night and were seated promptly. Apps, came out fast, and so did the salad. My honey ordered the Steak Maui with garlic mas potatoes, I ordered a strip with NYO Mac and cheese which was dee-lish. I tasted the Steak Maui and the sauce was dee-lish whatever it was not the typical flavor. Both sides were enough to share, so we did. YUM! Overall we enjoyed our meal, the dark, candle lit ambiance and our waiter was excellent.

Had an Alex's salad, rattlesnake pasta, a glass of merlot, and a slice of key lime pie. The salad came with plenty of croutons (yum!) and a croissant (double yum!!). Definitely one of the best "side salad"s I've ever had. The rattlesnake pasta was a delightfully spicy surprise, but it tasted too much like the actual chili powder so I docked them 1 star. Don't they taste this stuff before they serve it?? The glass of merlot was an afterthought, recommended by our server and it was great! So smooth and a great accompaniment to my meal! The key lime was average at best. It was sweet which is all I was really looking for but it was still sorta frozen in the middle :-/

5 STARS- Extraordinary In today's culture, foreign food is all the hype. Sushi, pad thai, vindaloo- complex, exotic dishes are now common place and preferred by even the average diner. Don't get me wrong, I am very passionate about new and exotic fare. However, many forget that American food can be just as classy, just as complex, just as... delicious! Out of all the restaurants in the area, I trust only one to consistently deliver exceptional American cuisine- J. Alexanders. J.'s is on a busy strip in Toledo I like to refer to as a 'Dining Drive', a section of town that runs past the mall and contains a ridiculous amount of eateries. The outside is pleasant and well kept, but front parking runs out swiftly (the back lot has plenty of space). Inside, a well-decorated dining floor is set off by warm lighting and crisp, white table cloths. The waiting section is small, but it flows into a snazzy, well-stocked bar. Once you are seated, a friendly waiter or waitress will take drink orders (don't worry, your drinks will not run out) and leaves you to peruse the fantastic menu. The appetizers are well portioned and fresh, certainly not a meal. I specifically enjoy the Spinach Con Queso, served with a bowl of salsa and fresh tortilla chips. The spinach offers a thicker texture and a great earthiness that gives the dish substance. If you're there for lunch, all sandwiches and salads are well made and tasty. These dishes are prepared excellently, especially the Chicken Cobb Salad (the rotisserie chicken is always perfectly moist) and the French Dip. The big show, however, is dinner. Every menu item is prepared superbly, with good seasoning and fresh products. All steaks are certified Angus Beef, the best of them being the Prime Rib. This steak's center is beautiful and pink, and the texture is like beef velvet. It's served with a rich au jus that could almost stand by itself. If you're hungry for seafood, try either the Cilantro Shrimp or the Ahi Tuna Filet. The shrimp is packed with flavor and never rubbery (it's a bit spicy), and the Tuna is luscious, served with a fantastic ginger glaze. If you can make it to the bottom of the menu, you'll spot the specialties, all of which are fail-safe. I recommend giving the Pork Loin a shot- J.'s is the only restaurant I will order pork. It's coated in a unique 'Bang-Bang' sauce, sweet and zesty. Feel free to choose any side with any meal- they're all great, especially the shoestring Fries or the buttery 'Smashed Potatoes. If you're up for dessert, all the selections are good, especially the cheesecake. However, with the huge dinner portions, it's usually impossible to get dessert as well- all of the desserts are intensely rich and filling. With locations around the country, J. Alexander's is technically a chain restaurant. Nevertheless, they provide a refined, consistent, and delicious experience. If you're looking for some upscale dining, I encourage you to eat American.

This place is completely and intensely average. Avoid. If you're going to spend your money in the area, go to Revolution or Mancy's Italian or Steakhouse or Amango or drive downtown to hit Registry or the restaurants at the Oliver House.... or just about anywhere else, honestly. I ordered the "steak and fries", since I do like a good steak frites dinner. The steak was decent quality AND it was cooked to exactly perfectly medium rare as ordered (good job!) but completely under-seasoned (oh come ON use just a bit of salt and pepper). I will also say that I liked the herbed butter - they didn't skimp, and it helped to finish the steak. Decent fries. GF had "Mr. Jack's Crispy Chicken Platter" which is described as "South carolina low country recipe with french fries and cole slaw". You'd expect a few pieces of good fried chicken, maybe a leg and a breast or something with a good breading and seasoning with that description - apparently, "south carolina low country" now means "flavorless processed boneless white meat chunks deep fried into oblivion and served with dipping sauce like we'd give to an 8 year old boy". Our waitress was impersonal, rushed, and sounded scripted from the moment she hit our table. The wine list is straight out of a grocery store (okay, maybe a slightly nicer grocery store but come ON, how hard is it to put together an interesting list given all of the amazing local wine vendors we all have access to in this city that know their wines? some of them work for the distributors, even, and they'd be thrilled to be creative in their lists!). Bottom line - this is "fine dining" that's suitable for high school kids on their first homecoming date. Maybe a slight upgrade from Longhorn. By the time they hit prom, hopefully they'll have learned enough about food to avoid this overpriced mediocrity.

So in celebrating Xmas/birthday/New Years, I decided to splurge on the Steak Maui. Yeah, it was as good as I remembered. Super tender, great flavor... it isn't cheap but worth the price every once in a while. Oh the rest of the meal and the meals of my companions were great too, but even they agreed that mine was the best. :)

Toledo the city may be rotting from the inside out, but you wouldn't know it from dining at J. Alexanders. Ordered a martini - very dry - from my waiter, she brought me a very dirty one - huge blunder. I didn't really feel like making a scene, but definitely want to make sure those waiters know the difference. I guess that one is on me though for ordering that from the waiter table-side instead of at the bar. Had the horseradish crusted filet and loaded baked potato. Came with a delicious salad and a honey covered croissant - which is great but kinda fills you up before you get the main course. The filet was cooked perfectly, well done. Lean cut, nicely crusted on the outside. The horseradish crusting was more breadcrumb than horseradish, but gave a nice flavor. The wife had the prime rib mid-well, and it too got the thumb's up. I did expect a bit more from the wine list - but it was adequate. It's a decent find in a crappy city!

What a wonderful restaurant! From the lemon drop martini, to the jumbo lump crab cake ... We were blown away. Service was neat & attentive.

The best service in town hands down. I ordered the steak tacos and they are the best that I have ever ate. I love this place.

Favorite place for an upscale salad and a glass of wine. Great for date nights or for a girls night out. Staff is always attentive and the specials menu has impressed me on numerous occasions especially with fish options. Five stars from me.

Very classy and great atmosphere restaurant, upscale for the least, always very busy, expect some wait time if you are going on weekends or sometimes any day, always full. Steaks are great, old fashion cheese burger is awesome, rattlesnake pasta is amazing!! also the Alex salad and Caesar is great. Waiters are very professional they go in some sort of training before they start helping people so J alexanders keeps it pro when it comes to waiters. Expect to be treated very nice from the minute you walk in to the restaurant. The price is average as this is not a cheap restaurant to go to. Most customers are couples so quite a nice and quiet atmosphere. i go there at least once per month and every time my experience was good, any mistake or something you don't like you get a replacement with no questions asked as staff make sure it is a pleasant experience for you. Before you leave if you like Carrot cake make sure you try it and you will pray for me as it will be the best you had in your life i promise.

Alexs salad is yummy :) with their buttery icy croissants and chicken pasta. My family loves the southwest egg rolls. Not many good chains in toledo but this is one of them.

J Alexander's is one of the best places to eat in the Toledo area in my opinion. About the only competition are those places which are part of the M..... group. The food isn't just superb, but the service also is, and the consistency of this place is amazing. I've settled into getting one or two different things from many of the places we go, but here I pick from about eight different things I'll choose from, as well as sometimes getting a special. It's hard to find something here which isn't great.

I've dined at J Alexander's several times. Their food never disappoints! I personally love the crab cakes and key lime pie.

Loved the ambience but the food was not to my liking. The waitress highly suggested the rattlesnake pasta which we eventually got and was definitely not worth it. Overpriced and overrated.

Give about a 2.5/5. We went on a Saturday night this month. Our waitress was very sweet and kind, but other people kept bringing out our food. I asked for no bacon on my salad with their equivalent of Thousand Island dressing. I received a salad loaded with bacon and no dressing. When we asked for bread, we got the response "oh, you want bread?". Isn't that normally standard? The hubs and I both got filet mignon. My husband's was butterflied for some reason and mine was whole and beautiful, but unseasoned and tough. No appetizer, my husband got a coke and a margarita, I drank water. Our bill pre tip was $87. My cousin ordered prime rib, rare. It came out medium well. She sent it back, got another piece, now was medium. Her husband ordered a porterhouse or sirloin. This man devours steak. He left about half on his plate. I got the spaghetti squash as a side, squash was very undercooked. The fries my husband got were fantastic. My cousin and her husband both received probably a quart each of mashed potatoes...the serving was humongous. I remember when they first came into town, the food was A1 top notched. Slowly went downhill. They don't even have their famous little croissants anymore.

The food was ok, and the portions were very generous. The main impression I was left with was that J Alexanders is extremely unimaginative. We had their speciality of the prime rib and one serving was more than enough for my husband and me. The best dishes were the macaroni and cheese (which we ordered for our toddler) and the side salad. In all fairness, my husband and I usually avoid chain restaurants. Had one of the local restaurants been open on a Sunday night, we would have gone there instead.

The carrot cake is to die for. Get it to go if you do not have room to eat it before you leave. Most of the time when I go there, the server memorizes our order (!?!??) AND remembers who ordered what once it came time to be served!! Some other faves are the orzo (side) and cosmos (drink). I usually order the salmon and have never been disappointed.

The atmosphere is quite lovely and the smells are incredible. The food is a notch above average. I enjoyed the Mac and cheese and the chicken soup. Good place for a first date.

My first business lunch in Toledo and it was nearly perfect. I took my mother-in-law for a late lunch and it was again nearly perfect. The staff is the best in Toledo as of now. The atmosphere is very modern and the staff is attractive and they clearly know how to be attentive and efficient. The food is the best American fair in Toledo so far as well. Enjoy!

Our last visit with J Alexander's was less than memorial. We had prime rib dinners with smashed potatoes. The prime rib was very small in size & extremely salty, the side of smashed potatoes was extremely salty too. After 2 bites of both we had to send it back. The cook came out & he seemed a bit ticked off because we refused to eat it we ordered other items(more in price) and we weren't happy with those items either. Not sure maybe a new cook or something, but the meal was BAD & way over priced. Will not go back for awhile.

Okay, okay, so you insist on going to a restaurant where you can get dressed up. Here is one restaurant for you where you have that choice and you will not feel out of place. You can dress up here OR you can go casual. Do not over do this one; you can not walk in here in beach trunks and flip-flops, but you can dress casually to be comfortable if that is what you enjoy doing. This is one excellent restaurant. Great style, great comfortability. Love the burgers and fries. The service is excellent. Atmosphere nice! You will enjoy this one. Priced - a good restaurant; I am thinking that is reasonable. (Food and service is definitely worth the money). I mentioned burgers and fries because that is what I enjoy. This is NOT a fast food restaurant, and nothing like one. Beautiful place, beautiful food, beautiful service and staff. Dress/Attire: You can dress comfortably and no one will look at you double. You can wear jeans, or you can go dressed up; it's all up to you. Worth the ride there. Wish it was closer. What I LOVE about this restaurant: At J. Alexanders, you can get great quality food, excellent quality service, and reasonably timely service, friendly, professional service WITHOUT having to dress formally. Now that is really something in a restaurant. Scale of one to ten, this beautiful restaurant rates an ELEVEN!
