I would not expect a former stagecoach inn in rural Ohio established in 1818 to be a diner's paradise on the best of days. So I was blown away by the mouth-watering fare at Smithville Inn in Amish country. Famous for pioneering the Inn Maid brand of egg noodles at the restaurant that has been in operation since 1924, my meal was flat out wonderful. Fried and flavorful Gerber (aka no antibiotics) chicken fell off the bone, the biscuits (the original recipe from 1924, we were told) are the flakiest and lightest I've ever eaten in a commercial establishment, and the side dishes of cole slaw and acorn squash perfect accompaniments. The ambience is downtrodden-chic, truly, with carpets that have seen better days, silverware rolled in cheap paper napkins, and chairs that probably are years past needing to be replaced. But you can't judge a book by its cover, so if you're ever in Smithville shopping at the historic Mishler Weaving Mill, as we were, or in nearby Wooster or Orrville, buzz on over to Smithville Inn. It's a part of Ohio history and I would have liked to explore the building and its artifacts more. I will definitely be back when it's apple picking season.

In a word....Meh, In many words; First, put your watches and phones in the glovebox before entering, you do not want to be able to time anything whilst visiting this establishment. Everything takes excessively long, seating, ordering, arrival of beverages and refills, check delivery, etc. When we arrived ours was the fourth vehicle in the lot, yet upon entering and waiting several minutes we were told it would be a few minutes. After the hostess rang up several parties we were seated in the half-empty dining room. After ordering, the wait seemed interminable, but eventually our meals arrived. My wife got tilapia, broiled, with mashed potatoes and green beans. I got the chicken dinner which is their signature dish, after debating between it & a chicken chef salad. The non-signature tilapia was quite good as were the mashed potatoes, the green beans were adequate, frozen in origin with no discernible seasoning other than salt. Although it was not described in the menu, the chicken was baked with paprika possibly with salt serving as the seasoning. It's best feature was that it was fairly moist. Not being a huge fan of white flabby skin adorning my chicken, that got removed post-haste. I was then left with the quandary of how to make this bland hunk of white meat flavorful. Halfway through the first piece I asked the waitress for hot sauce. It came just as I was finishing that piece, but unfortunately in concert with my decision that one piece was enough. I've never had a less notable "signature " dish. My sides were cole slaw, also freshly arrived from Blandville, an d my green beans were equally noteworthy to the wife's, My recommendation is to order from the non-signature items,

Boring, bland food served in historic like building. If you're planning a trip from anywhere to try the Smithville Inns' food, cancel your plans and eat a cardboard box.

I have been here 8 years ago & it was fine. But as bad as I hate to say this about any restaurant, the food had no flavor, everything was bland, the service was so slow it was unacceptable. Worse yet, the place is now dirty - yes - dirty. If you look at the wood paneling under the window on the outside wall by the parking lot in the dining room, you can see drip marks of food, chocolate syrup, and debris. It's in plain view for the diners. The carpet is so dirty and worn it's a real turn-off. Dust was filled in the floor register right under the filthy wall. If this is an example of their cleanliness, then they have to be in trouble with the kitchen. They need to learn how to use a little garlic, sage and salt on the baked chicken. The potatoes need salt and pepper (despite they are instant). The noodles could use some onions and parsley to pep it up. We won't be back. Sorry, but the manager or owner was more interested in gabbing with some regulars than cleaning the place. I guess he figures he is excused for filth, and possibly grand-fathered in because the place is a historic site. Sorry, but the hot dogs at Sheetz the next night was better!

The chicken was great, the potatoes were instant, and the biscuits were nothing special. The Barn had an hour wait, so we went The Smithville Inn instead. Just goes to show, good things come to those who wait, and those who are impatient end up with instant mashed potatoes.

this is one of the better places in the area if you're looking for an upscale-ish (for wayne county) / "white tablecloth" experience. plus downtown smithville is rather cute, so visiting the smithville inn can make for a fun outing. don't speed in smithville though. really. not even by 2mph. the po-po there are ferocious.
