Food has no flavor and the only thing worth eating is the salad bar which I enjoyed.

Houstons is a classic. If you dont understand the history and the area, you probably will be skeptical. They have the mist amazing salad bar you can imagine. The salmon is great, They have frog legs too! This is a traditional place. If you want fancy, trendy, and expensive, this isnt the place. Favorite of the over 50 crowd!

As others have noted, this place is straight out of the 60's (no design or menu updates for ages, if ever), and the dining experience had uneven service for sure. One couple next to us walked out before dinner was served, complaining that they ordered food 30 minutes prior and the waitress said she had just put their order in 3 minutes ago... Prime rib is very good, as was my son's fried chicken. These 2 items are fine, but not exactly inspired cooking or presentation. Standard side dishes were offered (again think 60's-70's sides). Fresh herbs, spices, and interesting veggies other than green beans, have been around for a long time, can't management wouldn't stretch just a bit and experiment? No draft beers here. The bread service is not great: store bought rolls and they were stale. The oversize salad bar, for which they were well known, wasn't great; nothing I saw prompted my stomach to do happy somersaults. My sons wondered aloud what marshmallows were doing in there, swimming along with a pastel pink/orange goop. I had no answer. They really needed a dedicated person on the night we visited, to replenish and clean the messes that had spilled onto other salad items and the floor. Yuck. Overall, it was just just ok food. Their prime rib, fried chicken and lemon cream pie (very good dessert) overshadowed some of the negatives but I won't return.

Okay, despite the honest review I am about to give, I like the place. So, don't think me hypocritical if you see me there again. This place is an oldie. It still living back in the 60s. From the decor, to the staff to the food. They have just never updated anything. They offer an enticing 55 items salad bar with offerings that were also popular perhaps in the sixties such as bean salad and candied watermelon rinds. Which, okay if you are into candied watermelon rinds, fine but at least also add standard salad staples on the bar too. Such as cucumbers. Is that too much to ask on a 55 items salad bar? I guess so because there weren't any. We ordered the New York strip. I had had one a few months ago and it was cooked perfectly so I had my wife try one. Meh. Just Meh. Everything was just meh I am sorry to say. It will be unlikely that you will come out of Houston's feeling like you must come back. However, you MIGHT. But after the next time you will probably skip a third visit. We will probably go back when our parents are in town. It was meant for the Baby Boomers. Gen Xers and Millenials will likely be better served elsewhere.

Well I should have really read "into" the reviews. Yes it's old and caters mostly to the older crowd but we saw young people there. We sat down and got service immediately. Drinks didn't come for 20 minutes.... Server said bar was crazy busy so we ordered and proceeded to glorious (so they say) salad bar.....after waiting 15 minutes and the long line wasn't moving we decided this wasn't for us tonight. We returned to table and decided to leave.... Drinks were still not there. I told our server Tracy we were leaving......she immediately went and got our drinks. I paid for them and we left. I am sure the food is good but don't go if you don't have time to stand in the salad bar line.

My husband and I both had the lamb chops and they were fantastic! The salad bar was OK, not really as WOW as expected. Service was good. We'll go again since it's close to our house and the kids would like it.

I have been twice. My daughter plays soccer behind the restaurant twice a week so I will likely be there again in the coming weeks. I ordered the Roast Beef and Stuffing. Other than the jar-like gravy that covered the plate the meat was falling apart and very good. The gravy tasted like it was straight out of a jar and there was a ton of it.The food was warm when it came to the table. AND, they serve real butter there. The role and cornbread they brought was nothing to talk about but the salad bar was good. I liked the huge bowl of cottage cheese on the salad bar.... It made me laugh. the eggs everyone else seemed to like where slightly rubbery which tells me they were not freshly made but still not horrible. The service was excellent. Coffee and pecan pie is out of this world. I don't know if I would go for dinner again. I don't want to risk those hefty prices and not like something. I think the prices are a bit high . And, the decor is old but I think it lends to the ambiance. It is clean and well cared for. As to the atmosphere, I would take this quiet environment with soft voices humming over music that's so loud you can't hear anyone speaking. Okay, so no one there is in much of a hurry. Bravo! This whole freaking world is in one big rush. Relax, have some respect and enjoy the company of real people...that is if you can put your iPhone down long enough to stare at your date's eyes or to say hi to the elderly couple at the table next to you. It reminds me of eating at Grandmas house. I'd go again for the coffee and pecan pie, and the reminder to just slow down and appreciate life.

This is a nice place. Yes a little drape but the salad bar is fantastic. Tons of stuff on the bar and good stuff. They advertise over 85 items. The food is always good I had the fish a few times and it was fresh and tasty. They do take reservations and will handle large parties. The price may seem high but you have to take into account the massive salad bar. It is hard to find resturants with a salad bar. Enjoy.

Just not good. Decor is old and dusty. Got the ribs thinking it was their specialty and they were WAAAY overcooked. Salad bar had huge full bowls of cole slaw and such that tasted like they had been sitting all day.

I think the Houston's glory days are gone..last night's dinner was awful..brown bowl of lettuce on salad bar..nothing on bar looked fresh or tasty..bread basket bread semi-stale, right out of a package..strip steak was 1/2" and tasteless..salmon (bourbon glaze) tasted like teriaki sauce and salmon had no flavor...best part of meal was a large, hot baked potato...server was robot - never spoke a word after she took our order...except to ask if we wanted dessert... $40.00 plus tip for sub-standard meal is unacceptable..spend a little more and drive up the road for a great meal at the Golden Lamb...

Yes, the Houston Inn's decor is dated, but that is part of its charm. They do have a very nice salad bar with some very unique choices. Plus they have Frog Legs, which are tasty. Yes, some of the food is not upscale, but they know who their cliental is and they cater to them. Yes, we are some of the younger people in there, but so what. Lunch is reasonable.

This place is just plain gross... My wife and I came here at the request of my brother in law...I knew this was going to be a huge mistake. OK, so the first thing you notice is the hideous decor - it hits you right away. Next, is the ambiance...This place feels like death's waiting room...no joke, I think we were the only people there under the age of 70. My wife and I were scared to even talk to each other because we were afraid to break the deathly silence in the place. The menu is absolutely embarrassing...Now, I know this is an old people's restaurant, and I know old people don't really have any taste buds, but I really think investing in a spice or two would pay dividends. On top of all that, the salad bar they have there is just downright creepy. This place gives me the willies...

A friend of my wife's told us about this place. As we pulled into the parking lot, I was fighting off the "judging a book by it's cover" predilection. As we went inside, I fought off judging a book by it's pages issues as well. Here's what went well. 1. We wanted to try the froglegs (of which they say they are the "King"). They had some froglegs for us to try. 2. The host just inside the door was an incredibly pleasant man. He was kind, funny, and aimed to please. 3. Our waiter was good. She knew how to time the meal. She knew how to watch for glasses that needed filling. She knew how to take care of us without hovering or being a nuisance. She was extremely pleasant. 4. The prices were very reasonable. 5. We got there at 4 pm on a Saturday - and just barely - and I do mean BARELY - beat the incredible rush. They packed out in no time - and the place is literally huge. I think the host told me something like 300 tables. Amazing. 6. The deviled eggs on the salad bar were pretty good, but nothing special. It's pretty hard to screw up a basic deviled egg. They didn't screw it up. Here's what didn't go as well. 1. The food was really subpar. I ordered the prime rib (another thing they touted as being very special there) and was bummed by the quality of the meat. It was cooked to the temperature I ordered, but there was a much fat on the plate as meat. Don't get me wrong, I love a good marbling in my beef - but this was marbling gone awry. The froglegs were ... a bit gamey. Another person at the table had the ribs, and they could swear that the sauce was clearly Montgomery Inn. That's actually not a bad thing since this family loves the BBQ sauce from Montgomery Inn. The only caveat was that it tasted like it was out of a bottle. Huh. I'd call that a miss. 2. This might sound judgmental ... so I will try very hard to temper that ... but we were the youngest people in the huge establishment by maybe 20 years. It was clearly a spot for citizens that are senior but still able to get out without a walker or hov-around. 3. The decor has not been updated in any of the three generations of single family ownership. It's a time capsule without being ... hip. So very dated. So very trailer park-ish. 4. The restaurant boasted a 59 item salad bar. I'm not really a salad bar person, but I thought that maybe they wouldn't count croutons (out of a bag) as an item. Ruby Tuesday has a better salad bar. Heck , Cow Palace ... er .... I mean ... Golden Corral has a better salad bar. Unfortunately - I don't see us ever going back to the Houston Inn. Clearly they have been around through 3 generations of single family owners - so someone is going there. It just wont' be us.

Houston's in Lebanon has been a stand-by restaurant in my family for the past three generations. The restaurant itself is welcoming in a "grandma's house" kind of way; it's decorated in warm mahogany and brass. Clientele and staff at the restaurant are much like you'd find at your grandma's house as well, senior citizens in the area enjoy meeting their friends for lunches and dinners in the dining room and drinks in the large bar. Food at Houston's is traditional American, meatloaf and roasted chicken are good choices and both are served with your choice of home-style sides. Presentation isn't key here, just good quality home cooking. Fried frog legs are one of Houston's claims to fame in the area, and it is true what they say: "just like chicken!" Many return to Houston's because of the attentive service and the family atmosphere but I keep going back for the salad bar. Houston's features over 75 different items on their massive iced bar, including delicious homemade potato salads and mounds of fresh fruit. Overall: Houston's is a great choice for a family gathering as the staff is as attentive to seniors as they are to children (maybe not the best date place, unless you plan on cooing over older couples... "That will be us in 40 years!"). The restaurant is a local watering hole, so expect crowds on weekend nights and make a reservation for large groups!

My husband and I visited on a Tuesday night. We wanted to check it out as a place to take my parents when they come into town since it's close to our house. The staff was very friendly and greeted us right away. We were shown to a table on the "Lounge" side of the building. My first impressions were 1) the large vats of potato and pasta salad bar were a little unappealing, 2) the place is enormous 3) the decor has not been updated in a LONG time. Our waitress was very attentive and also friendly. We looked over the menu and were surprised at the choices and how inexpensive the wine list choices. We decided to get a bottle since it was affordable. The salad bar on closer inspection was well done. They had my husband's favorite, pickled watermelon. I was able to make a nice spinach salad. Plus they also have deviled eggs! I ordered the fried shrimp and my husband got the fried chicken. The shrimp was what you would expect from a place like this, but the chicken was really crispy and moist inside. Overall, we will return with my parents in tow, they really like this type of place. Its a place where both my parents and my husband and I can have a nice dining experience together.

We think this place is a real classic. Love the salad bar and fresh fish specials. If you have a large party this is the place to go. High quality food for a fair price. The chef knows what he is doing because the sauces are very good.

Food is institutional crap. Service is long & inaccurate. Your parents & grandparents will NOT love it if they still have taste buds left. Run away.
(1)Heather J.
It's old people food - and not very good at that. They have a huge salad bar with very few vegetables oddly enough. I've had better food at a hospital cafeteria. I mean - for what it is - it's fine - your parents or grandparents will love it.

This was my first visit and I was hoping it would be something special instead I had the worst meal I have every had. I am normally not hypercritical of anything but this meal was bad, Chef Ramsey, Kitchen Nightmares bad. We were a party of six. Everyone ordered something different, Frog legs and Fillet, Pork Roast and Dressing the night's special, Salmon, Sirloin and Shrimp. I ordered house specialty Prime Rib. My piece of prime rib, an end cut, was well over cooked. I should have known when my cut of meat come in 2 inches of Au Jus and Grey in color I was in terrible trouble. I was asked when ordering how I wanted my order, medium rare, medium if you have an end cut. I normal ask for an end cut just so I can get the flavor of the rub and the outer bark. I know the meat will be more cooked but not over cooked. Horrible flavor, dry, no seasoning on outside of roast. The color was Grey in color. The kitchen manager gave me this piece to get rid of it. My wife ordered the Pork roast special. the pork itself was OK. It was a little over cooked but she likes it that way. The gravy poured over the meat was from a jar. It had that glaze oily look and a level of salt that could have cleaned snow from a highway. Stuffing was day old dry. Another in our party ordered a medium rare fillet that came out nearly blackened and his frog legs were over fried. He as one frog leg and three or four bites of meat. the lady next to him ordered salmon with green beans as a side. She eat one bite of fish and one bite of the canned Green beans. The salad bar I guess is the Inns claim to fame. It had 54 items. Half of those items looked as if they have had the same 54 items since the restaurant opened 50 years ago. There was a bowl of cottage cheese that had to be 2 gallons. So my thought was they set out 2 gallons of cottage cheese and then do what with the 1.75 gallons that are left over at the end of the service. When you walk into the restaurant you pass within inches of the salad bar. everybody who walks in and out of the restroom walks within inches of the salad bar. That seems unsanitary to me. Why didn't we send our food back. Too polite maybe, Turned off by the meal in front of us and couldn't imagine it getting much better, and the waitress neglected to check on us until she dropped off the checks. None of us talked about our meals while we were eating I guess not to ruin the experience of the others but after wards we ending finding out that everyone in the party was as disappointed as I was. I know I should have sent my meal back but I think it was easier to chalk it up to a bad experience and promise myself I will never return.

This old school restaurant is way out there on rt 42. Know as the King of frogs legs, I have been going to this place since I was a child. expect long waits on the weekend. the food is classic Cincinnati mostly heavy on the meats and potato's. the frog legs are good if you are feeling adventurous. The also used to be know for the one of the biggest salad bars in the area (In the 70's) The deviled eggs are excellent!. Service is quick and short.
