Another ice cream shack, excellent. This is just what I was looking for after my disgusting (health-wise, not taste-wise) fast-food lunch on my way out of town, at the end of my brief 26-hour stay in Toledo. This place is a bit "nicer," as they have a newish standalone building and a real parking lot, plus printed menus. They lack any real personality, though. There is a long list of specialty sundaes, and they also sell lunch items such as burgers, hot dogs, and sandwiches. I got a "Chunky Mint Cookie Flurry" which was basically their version of the DQ Thin Mint Cookie Blizzard. Delicious. Plenty of cookie pieces in there. Oh, and the small was 16 ounces. Yikes! That's a good deal for $3.75, but more ice cream than I needed. One more thing--this stuff took a LONG time to soften and melt. That really helped me out because I was driving home on I-80 with the flurry in the passenger-side cupholder. Thus, I was spooning this stuff out of the cup across about three feet of exposed seat and console to get to my mouth. Since it didn't melt right away, I never dripped any on my car interior (or myself).

Unpretentious with a no frills approach, Mel-O-Creme whips up some mean ice cream with portion sizes that will blow everything out of proportion. Seriously, if an afternoon treat is all that you're looking for, any small size sundae/freeze/frozen yogurt will suffice unless you plan on finishing the rest for dinner somehow. Be prepared for sundaes served in plastic to-go containers and soft serve frozen yogurt in 20-oz styrofoam cups. On days when I'm not feeling so health conscious, I may make a second trek down Airport Hwy for their wonderful sounding ice cream creations like the Hawaiian Delight and pass on the fat-free, sugar-free flavor of the day, which by the way, was Dreamsicle when I went. Despite the ice cream shack being situated in an area completely devoid of scenery, it's still a good place to catch up with friends while catching the summer breeze. Just be aware that other folks may ask to share a picnic table with you.

Mel-O-Creme has been a staple among my rotation of seasonal ice cream shops for years. The have decent prices and portion sizes, but be sure to watch for their daily specials if you really want a deal. I don't know if they have it this year, but in years past, Wednesday was "half-off drinks" day, and that included shakes. The setting is far more urban and decidedly "non-scenic" (if that's a word) than I prefer at an ice cream place, so I usually grab my stuff to go. Some ice cream places are a destination unto themselves; that is, worth driving to just to enjoy the experience of hanging out there while eating your treat. That isn't the case for Mel-O-Creme, but that's okay because their location on a major highway makes them perfect for swinging by on your way somewhere else.
