VEGAN FRIENDLY This amazing little cafe has some of the best vegan food I have ever had. Stopped here by chance and was greeted with a menu full of awesome vegan options. The pancakes were just phenomenal, some of the best i ever ever had vegan or not that were not homemade. Plus this place has a bakery attached that gave a wonderful vegan cupcake to eat on the drive. Cant wait to come back to this wonderful place.

Totally walked 25 min on icy streets to have their served-all-day breakfast. Worth it. Had a tomato avocado bacon omelet on special. Avocado was perfectly ripe, all other ingredients were on point as well. Potatoes were yummy too. Everything tasted very rich, so I'd venture to say the use a lot of butter to prep there food, which could be a good or bad thing. Coffee was delicious with free refills. Cute sunny welcoming space. Service was attentive without being intrusive.

Horrible food, long wait, rude staff and overpriced. This was once an awesome eatery but has gone down hill in an epic way

My boyfriend and I went to a spa in OH for our anniversary. We stopped by this little place for lunch and fell in love with it. The food is locally sourced, the selection of menu items is lengthy and unique. Both of our meals were delicious! The beer selection was nice too. We ended our meal with a gluten free pumpkin cookie that was absolutely delicious! Next time we are in Dayton we will DEFINITELY be stopping by!

I have been here a couple times, all pleasant experiences. Small, hipster type cafe that uses organic/vegan/natural/local ingredients whenever possible. Omelets are awesome with very fresh and hearty ingredients (I recommend the turkey sausage) and AMAZING potatoes on the side. However, they are probably best known for their pancakes and french toast (all options are good). My friends have had the breakfast burrito multiple times and they all rave about it. Prices are decent for what you're getting and the service is fine--including a waitress who does all orders by memory without fault...so far.

Nasty as He'll Never Again I repeat Never again over priced. I would give them zero stars if I could
(1)Kate S.
Good food but service staff is always moody. Also seemed to try and push us out the door once they delivered the check.
(3)Kristyn F.
Vegan pancakes! We go here pretty frequently for breakfast with friends and have always had great food and great service. They are accommodating for our baby as well. We usually get there around eight or nine and never have to wait, but they are usually on a list by nine thirty.
(5)Terry S.
I ordered the blueberry pancakes and they where good and fresh tasting with some bacon on the side . My friend ordered the veggie omelet which was t greatest . Atmosphere was cute there and I will for sure return there soon.
(3)Gregory C.
Great Sunday Brunch, including yummy gluten free waffles and a bacon, tomato, avocado omelet! Great service in an eclectic atmosphere.
(4)Maya Q.
I absolutely love this restaurant! The food is excellent and its vegan friendly! The only problem is they can be very busy :)
(5)Russell S.
Hands down best pancakes ever! Plus everything is organic, so it makes me feel good about myself and healthier. Large gluten free selection for those sensitive to wheat. The only downfall is there are not enough combos that come with bacon and eggs and it gets pricey to add them but if you want a good breakfast, this is the place to go!
(4)Mary H.
Yummy breakfast with my nephew who attends UD. Pancakes are too die for! I had almond joy ( coconut, chocolate chips and almonds) while my daughter ( a prospective UD student) enjoyed the banana nut pancakes. My nephew swears by the classic breakfast while his girlfriend loves the French toast Cute atmosphere! Would definitely come back. Wanna try the omelet sand burritos

I love that East Dayton is getting a 2nd or 3rd life. Even 5 years ago I wouldn't dream of coming here, but it's quickly becoming a very trendly, yet older neighborhood filled with new eateries and businesses. Walked in the door and spied Raspberry/Lemonade and Peanut Butter/Banana cupcakes. OMG...I'll be hitting that counter up before I leave, I think to myself. But the first order of business was breakfast. So many wonderful things on the menu, and I've never seen so many Vegan choices. I settled on the Skinny B!#@h Omelette and Fruit plate. and hubby got pancakes and bacon. Fruit plate had bananas, raspberries, cherries, melom and strawberries. it was the best fruit plate ever!!! The omelette was strange...egg whites on top of a big pile of fried veggies. Never saw an omelette quite like that. Potatoes were cooked just right. Hubby's pancakes were huge and quite good - and bacon was cooked perfectly (I hate limp bacon). My second choice would have been raspberry Frency Toast. Some closee to us got that and it looked so good! Next time. Service was friendly and good, though only one person was working the floor and she had to do everything - including packing my cupcakes to go. It was Monday mid-morning, so perhaps they didn't expect to be so busy. I'll be back, and hope to be able to raise rating. One thing for sure is I won't be ordering the Skinny B!#@h Omelette (important to note that was the only miss and everything else was quite good. It was a big miss)

Wanted to give 1 star because of all the problems. But they get 2 stars for filling the need for a campus brunch spot thats also veg friendly. But on to the problems...1. six people on a sunday afternoon should expect a wait. and expect lots of two-top tables to be seated first. 2. broken chair. 3. FREEZING cold potatoes. 4. constant references to having to go out back to get things we ordered? 5. issues mixing up receipts and misplacing customer's cards and having staff pow wows about it in front of customers ...just all around struggling. They should probably close their doors for a couple days and figure it out.

Butter Cafe, where've you been my whole life (or at least the last YEAR I've been living here!)? My husband and I dined here on Friday morning and loved it! FAB food, super fun decor and the intimate dining experience blows away all competitors! Get a breakfast burrito and prepare to have your mind blown...seriously...be prepared. The tortilla was both crispy and chewy while the eggs and black beans waiting inside were fluffy and tender. Also earning gold stars were the side of salsa (which could have been a bit more generous considering the size of the burrito) their perfectly cooked smashed Yukon Golds and bold, smooth black coffee! It took all my willpower to decline the offer to snatch up one of the delicious-looking cupcakes for our ride home. I loved this spot...can you tell? Go see for yourself :)
(5)Nikki D.
I have a love/hate relationship with this little cafe. The first time we dined here it was great! The server was friendly, happy and knowledgable about the menu items. The food came out hot and delicious. A friend had pancakes that were amazing, and I had the breakfast burrito...also amazing. I was surprised when the second and third time we dined here, it was not so great. The server we had was DEPRESSING! She didn't smile one time during our visit! When I asked about what cupcakes they had that day, she said " I don't know, they're in the case if you want to look on your way out"...ugh. The food has never let me down, and for that it get's 3 stars. As for the service...they need new servers!

Three women walk into Butter Cafe. All from Chicago, two out of three- brand new residents of Ohio. It was a Sunday- Father's Day to be exact. You know you're at the right place when you are instantly greeted by the friendly staff and have the option of entertaining your hungry eyeballs with cupcakes by the cashier while you wait for your seat. I split the Paris Omelette & Almond Joy pancakes with a friend which were both really good. The chevre cheese, mushrooms and onions in my omelette were all very fresh- simple ingredients done right. And the Almond Joy pancakes? Let's just say that whoever invented that bad boy is brilliant and deserves a high five AND bear hug the moment he/she steps foot into Butter Cafe. I am a big fan of the fact that they support free range / organic products and are Vegan/Vegetarian friendly. Their coffee was so smooth and full of flavor I had to ask the waitress what kind it was- apparently they started grounding their own coffee which made me smile! Note that the last time I asked the waitress what kind of coffee they served was at a Southern brunch place (Big Jones) In Chicago which served Cafe du Monde coffee- so yes, my standards are kind of high. I am currently residing in the Toledo area but will definitely return to Butter Cafe whenever I'm in Dayton!
(4)Annie S.
I definitely enjoyed my breakfast at the Butter Cafe this weekend. Everyone's food was fantastic and my only two complaints would be that the coffee was very bitter and the $1.50 to "upgrade" to pure maple syrup for my french toast was a little bit lame.Still, I will more than likely visit again the next time I am in Dayton. It is also very noisy in the restaurant so taking someone hard of hearing (like my Grandma) wasn't the best choice. A+ for the food and service.
(4)Frank S.
I had banana nut pancakes that were excellent. Not too sweet, with lots of pecans. Coffee was also top notch.
(4)Roxanne O.
I really really, really appreciate that Butter is vegan friendly. But...I might have liked my meal a little more if my vegan breakfast burrito didn't taste like maple syrup. I'm guessing my food got mixed with something else that had a maple flavor? Dunno. It was edible but not so awesome. I got a Buckeye vegan cupcake to go, too. The person who rang me out promised "an explosion of flavor in my mouth," (direct quote) but what I got was a dried out cupcake. Oh well. I'd definitely check this place out again, though. Saw lots of good looking vegan food around me. Hopefully not all of it tastes like maple!
(3)Virginia C.
Great fresh food for any one! I was so pleased to have the vegan options. The food was fresh and made from scratch in a no frills comfy environment. I highly recommend this place if you're around the Dayton area.
(5)Melissa T.
Absolutely love this place. Just be prepared that it will be busy at high demand times and it is a small place, but worth the wait. Wonderful vegan options that are so delicious even non vegans could enjoy! I have dined both during breakfast and lunch, equally delicious options. Very reasonably priced also.

Butter was the perfect conclusion to a weekend away (in Dayton albeit, but we were still away). I searched for brunch in Dayton and looked at menus and pictures before being tempted by this charming locale; the stripped awning really won me over. So glad it did. When we drove by (near the University of Dayton, seemingly well known on Brown Street by students and faculty alike) there was a gaggle of people outside. We parked and went in, put our name on the chalkboard, took a walk around the area (under construction so not so great) and then came back within the hour to find ourselves next on the list for a table. This place is charming with happy diners on both levels. Whimisical with a photo poster of Paris, a decorative chandelier, and a pink old school telephone, and more, in the lobby. Our server was very nice despite being so busy, and quite helpful in making our selections. I had a delicious hot chocolate as we waited for our meals. they came out quick, hot, and delicious. I had an omlette with a side of sausage, as did my other half. Both were really good. I love that they use local, fresh, non-factory foods. Always good to find these spots as an outsider. If Dayton is anything like Cincinnati, this might be harder to find than desired. We ate, relaxed, and then headed home to conclude our weekend trip. Thank you Butter for the tasty, local send off!

I had the chorizo burrito and it was really good. The dining experience was very pleasant and the wait staff friendly.
(3)Adele D.
Butter cafe is super good. TONS of vegetarian/vegan options and they also have the option of substituing your toast for a side salad. The decor is cutesy and as has been pointed out previously, definately from Ikea:) Our server was friendly and funny. I am seriously excited to go back to butter cafe because there are SO many veggie options!
(5)Angela M.
I love the gluten free options and local offerings of this restaurant. It is also hip - by Dayton standards. interior has the home-grown feel that you would expect to see. We live very close and eat here at least every 3 or 4 weeks. Yesterday, we had a really bad service experience. I would never say service was fantastic to begin with. Most of the servers have a very non-chalant attitude. It almost seems like they are bored. Yesterday, my son decided to add chocolate chips to his favorite gluten free waffle. The waffle was so loaded with chips that even a 6 year old found it excessive. He didn't eat more than one bite. The server never noticed that it was sitting without being touched. Nor did she notice that our plates sat empty for 10 minutes. I finally asked for her to remove them and get him his regular gluten free waffle. We waited 25 minutes for a waffle that we had to take to go at that point. She charged us for both waffles. I asked about it and she ignored me. I was standing at the bakery counter to buy a gluten free cookie, while waiting for the second waffle and watched her walk right by my to-go order twice. I finally had to ask another server to see if that to-go order was mine. I will be looking for another restaurant with gluten free and local breakfast offerings. That is the only thing that Butter Cafe had going for it and I am sure I can find it elsewhere.

This is a cute little breakfast place with friendly staff and a few vegan options (yay!) I had the vegan breakfast burrito. It was ok, but the one thing I didn't quite enjoy, was that it seemed to be fried in vegan butter, or perhaps a lot of vegan butter was used in the filling....anyhow...my burrito was sitting in a pool of yellow greasy liquid. But despite this it was still pretty good. Also I could see on the menu that avocado used to be included (which was crossed out with a black marker) and now they charge $1.50 extra for it. For dessert I got a vegan red velvet cupcake to go...YUM! There were a lot of options and I would try this place again.
(3)Joel H.
Fantastic menu and friendly staff. We had the Mexican omelette (needed cilantro), jelly donut pancakes, mango adult beverage, and coffee. Great price, quality, and quickness. Our waitress, Crystal, was great, too. We'll definitely return soon!

Best. Pancakes. Ever. ...from a restaurant, anyway. Sarah makes the best in the world, but these were so dope, I ate till I was sick! I guess I do that a lot. The 'cakes were PACKED with fresh blueberries, and perfectly fluffy. The coffee was strong enough, and the free range bacon was thick, and cooked as well as you can expect from any restaurant. Excellent home fries, which is very rare these days, especially in the Midwest. Aaaaaaand we made it through a massive breakfast feast without even breaking $30. If I have one complaint, it's that there was so much delicious food that I lost control of myself and gorged until I thought I might die of pancake overdose.

I was sad to see Dolcessa (the previous restaurant in this spot) leave, but once I visited Butter, I was pretty excited to try it out. The good: Butter serves lots of vegan and gluten free options. I'm not vegan but a lot of my family is, and I have 2 in our group that don't eat gluten. Butter is a great option for a group outing because they cater to the special dietary needs of a variety of people, and sometimes that is tricky to find. The reality: The first time we visited, my potatoes were kind of gross. Bland, too oily, cold. But the rest of my food was good, and the staff seemed friendly and enthusiastic. One talked to us about a vegan burrito night at another place. It was an okay experience and we were happy to bring friends and family to check it out, and talked it up to a few people. During various other visits, the service has been spotty, usually friendly but very slow. The furniture is flimsy and uncomfortable. The Ikea chairs feel like they are going to fall apart under you, and the last time we were there, one of our group who is less than 100 pounds tried to switch her chair thinking it was broken, only to find they are all that wobbly and flimsy. The cappucino is horrible. Undrinkable. The one time I ordered it, I left it sitting at our table completely full til the end of the meal and my server never asked if there was anything wrong with it. I told her it was not good, and she offered to bring me something else, but still charged us for it. The potatoes have gotten better, though they still aren't very good in texture. The bacon is very expensive for what you get. I had a great reuben the last time we were there. The mac n cheese ("best you ever had!" according to the menu) is bland and the texture is weird. I've ordered the Chai Tea French toast twice. It is supposed to be chai spiced - soaked in a spiced custard before frying, and served layered with mascarpone cheese. The first time I got it I thought the mascarpone was weird, then realized it was giant gobs of flavorless butter, that I had to scrape out from between the pieces. I thought maybe there had been a mistake, but I had been waiting a long time for my food, so I just ate it and didn't mention it. Today we visited: We were seated immediately at a tall table. I'm on the short side, so those usually hurt my legs, make my feet fall asleep, but since we were being seated immediately, I thought it would probably be okay. We had to wait about 30 minutes for our food, my legs were killing me by the time it got there. The coffee was okay, but my cup was chipped and cracked across one side, so I had to drink out of it using my left hand to avoid the gross broken side. Maybe it is just me, but I feel like chipped ceramic is porous and therefore not very clean. I ordered the chai French toast again. Again it came out, not perceptibly spiced, with big gobs of butter between each piece - 4 pieces, with approximately 1.5 tablespoons of butter between each of them. I scooped it off. No mascarpone again, and now I'm sure it isn't an oversight. The bits of french toast that weren't swimming in butter were dry and flavorless. Potatoes were well seasoned, but mushy - almost like oily mashed potatoes. Our waitress was rude and sourfaced. When she took my order she interrupted me to ask if I wanted anything else, rather than letting me tell her my order. She got our orders confused (probably because it had been so long since she had taken them) and when she brought out our food, she slapped the bill down on the table without asking how the food was, and never came back. Never refilled the water glasses, no more coffee, didn't pick up our bill and another staff member had to cash us out because we were tired of waiting. Didn't get a box for our food because we just wanted to leave. Breakfast for 2 was $33.00, did not include refills of beverages, and was served with a sneer. I really want to like Butter, it is in my neighborhood and seems like the perfect place for my family and friends to have brunch. We all love to support local businesses, especially those catering to underserved (in Dayton) vegetarians, etc, but today was really unpleasant. I cannot recommend it any longer. The service is terrible, slow and today rude, and the food is not very good and is expensive.
(2)Strea T.
Vegan brunch delights! They have vegan pancakes on the menu, and their blueberry pancakes are the best. They also do vegan sausage. Add maple syrup for a little more, and you have a great brunch, at about $11. Other vegan items include a tofu scramble, which is just tofu with turmeric and light seasonings, toast, home fries, and two vegan sausage patties; and a breakfast burrito (make sure you ask for the tortilla to be toasted - trust me!), which includes some kind of vegan cheese, but not daiya. This seems a bit hit or miss, though, as I've had it when it was amazing and times when it was lacking enough cheese to get excited about. My husband loved the chai marscapone french toast, but that's definitely not vegan.

We had heard so many good things about this place, so what a bummer to have a horrible experience on our first and last visit. Everything was equally miserable: the server, the food, and the coffee.

My wife and I were visiting family in Dayton and always look to eat at local restaurants, however this time we wish we had just gone to Golden Nugget. The good: The menu lists local, free range and gluten free options. It's (trying to be) very cute, but the fact that everyone knows what isle the Ikea furniture came from and that remnants of the space's former life as a retail boutique (slat wall sections still in place) make it a tough sale as a truly darling little spot. The bad: 1. The kitchen exhaust fan (I guess) was so loud that it created a hum in the entire restaurant as well as vibrating the floor, and with no music playing while we were there it was very annoying. 2. Several of our cups and glasses were dirty and had a "film" on them that looked like they were using poor dish detergent. 3. The server was horrible. I'm not even going to go into it because I don't want to be mean, but trust me, she was "Horrible". 4. The mystery steps? Protruding into the dinning room was a 1/2 flight of unpainted pine steps that had a bed sheet hanging to block the view of another room. However the wind was blowing so hard through the place that the sheet flapped the entire time and every few minutes a different person would appear to try and tie them down somehow only to have them break loose a few seconds later. The REALLY bad: 1. The worst thing about the Butter Cafe is that the door opens directly into the dining area and the food pick up station. On the day that we were there it was 20 degrees outside with a wind chill of 10. So every time the door opened the entire dining room is BLASTED with cold air, as are the plates of food waiting to be picked up. Adding a vinyl outer curtain or door would be a major step in the right direction.. All of these minor fix issues are unfortunate and we really do hope that the owners will step in to correct them because we treasure local restaurants on our trips to Dayton.

I ate hear again yesterday after multiple visits and decided it was finally time to let everyone know what a little gem this place is!! The decor is super cute, cozy and inviting. The menu is unique and fun with a lot of variety that you can't normally find in this hood. My favs are the many different types of pancakes they offer as well as the stuffed peppers which are gone for the winter but I've been told will arrive again with Spring!!! I'm so happy this little cafe has arrived in Dayton and look forward to my next visit.
(5)Evalyn C.
My food was great, the service was not. I expected to the food to take a little bit because it is a small kitchen and we had 5 in our group, but we were the only people in there for a time and we had to ask 2 and 3 times for thingss like more silverware and refills. Perhaps I'm projecting, but there was a distinct air of "better than you" towards our group, especially after the more obviously pierced and tattooed artsy looking types strolled in. But, like I said, the food and beverage selection was pretty nice and everything my table had turned out nicely. I had the vegan burrito and vegan sausage and was amazed by how flavorful it all was - nothing bland or tasteless about it. I think the only food based complaint at my table was that the regular breakfast burrito was a bit bland, but an extra helping of the delicious salsa fixed that up right quick.

Recently we tried Butter Cafe upon the recommendation of our sister-in-law. It was delightful. We split a Paris Omelette and a Reuben sandwich. Both were wonderful with the Reuben trumping the omelette. I am always on a quest for the perfect Reuben and this may be it! I have never tasted such a fresh Reuben without that heavy greasy-spoon that you often find. The 1000 Island Dressing was delicate and impressive. We will consider this the best Reuben in Dayton and our go-to spot for breakfast. Plus, Starbucks is down the street! The staff and service was right on. Finally, a few restaurants are catching on that people wish to eat fresh, local, and healthy meals. I am willing to spend more to eat well and Butter Cafe is well worth it.
(4)Steve K.
Awesome restaurant with really cool charm. Right by university of Dayton. Really unique breakfast specials. I will be back
(5)Daniel C.
Really enjoyed our breakfast in this quaint little breakfast spot. So nice to have a local breakfast alternative to Denny's and the like! My wife's Chai French Toast really stole the spotlight--the Italian Omelette was only fair.
(4)Greg P.
Great fair trade coffee, good hash, $7 mimosas (!). Eggs were over-just-a-little-too-easy, with a bit of raw white. But overall, satisfied. Yellow walls and a mix of Parisian and Ikea styling--it's in a cute college neighborhood with lots of upper-middle clientele. I would go again if I had $10 to spend on breakfast, without a mimosa.
(3)Lindsay B.
Went here for breakfast, and I will definitely go back!!! The environment reminds me of a hipster, quaint restaurant you'd find in a city like Chicago or New York. Also, if you like organic/free range you'll want to eat here. They even reference the book Skinny Bitch when naming a veggie omelet. Speaking of omelets, I had the spring omelet and it was AWESOME! My boyfriend had the burrito and it was disappointing. His friend had the blueberry pancakes and they were very good. We all had potatoes, they were a little under cooked, but not bad. I'm really looking forward to going back and having lunch. But watch out for the price, it might getcha.
(4)Noellie S.
Everything I've had at Butter Cafe has been good. I had the vegan stuffed pepper the first time, and a special (vegan pancakes) the second. I would go far more often if the vegan pancakes were a regular item (perhaps with variations, like the rest of the pancake selection). I would have given this place four stars, but the servers bum me out. No complaints about speed or presentation, that was great, but it was hard to remain cheerful in the presence of the Server of Doom and Gloom. Maybe she was having a bad day, or maybe she just couldn't take the Oprah-franchise-style art anymore. But seriously, for really real, Butter Cafe? Get some local art. Or have your five year old neighbor throw paint at some canvas...or SOMETHING. The Ikea furniture is totally fine, but that mass-produced cartoony ladies shopping in Paris cutesy Eiffel tower business is AWFUL. Seriously. SO. BAD. Have a monthly showcase for U.D. art majors maybe? Or other local artists? Win-win situation! Free artwork for you, an art show for them, and their friends will all come in to see the art and eat your food! Your employees will feel better about the hip place they work and will stop hating their job(maybe)! Yay!!! Thanks for existing, Butter. I'm glad you're here....please redecorate. (Rotate local artwork! It will cost you nothing!)
(3)Ann K.
For a place that prides itself (and advertises itself) as being vegetarian/vegan friendly, this place fails terribly to meet certain expectations from non-meat eaters. I went a while back when it first opened: the vegan sausage was gone first of all. The only "vegan" thing I could get for brunch was a salad. The girl serving me didn't even know if certain breads they had that I could get with the salad were vegan or not. ???!!!! Then the salad came: and it had a big old piece of turkey in it! It somehow got mixed into the salad, and I made sure they knew I was vegan. When I asked the server girl what it was, she said, "I don't know." I said, "is this meat?" and she had to grab another server and she was like, "yeah that looks like meat." It makes me even wonder if they try to separate the grills for meat and "vegan meat-like" products in the back. Do they even change gloves so they don't touch vegetables after having made butter/meat/cheese products? I was disappointed. If a restaurant is going to specifically list itself as being vegan friendly, it should 1. have more vegan options, 2. train its workers better so they know what the ingredients are in what they serve, and 3. make non meat eaters feel safe eating there by not accidentally mixing in left over meat from another prep work into his/her salad. So many other better vegan places around. Olive that just opened up is one.
(2)Brent M.
A great vision for a Breakfast/Luncheon place, with organic meats and healthier options instead of the tired and usual Bob Evans fare. The free-range breakfast sausages are the best I have ever tasted, cooked perfectly and not over done. We were treated with very friendly and engaging service. Coffee was fresh but could be improved with a nice dark roast, however the pancakes were delicious with thin crispy edges. A welcome addition to Brown Street.

It would seem this brunch spot should have all the makings of a quaint little place that serves interesting dishes like chai french toast, french toast kabobs, and jelly doughnut pancakes. For me that sounded awesome...and extremely familiar. Maybe that's because the menu is a rip off of an AMAZING brunch restaurant in Chicago called Orange. They have nearly the same concept, menu, and even the font. However what Butter doesn't have is the ambience, the service, and the food quality that Orange has.. We were seated after a 45 minute wait and were brought water glasses which our server filled using antique milk containers. It's cute and all, but when the water you serve smells like a wet dog, it's considerably less charming. I attempted to order the french toast kabobs and was informed I couldn't order them after 11 am (not that it mentioned that on the menu any place, but let's move along). I opted for the chai french toast and a side of bacon. When all our food came out it was warm, but not hot. The 2 slices of bacon i received were burnt (these are $3 by the way) and the chai french toast didn't taste of chai and looked like some Kroger-brand bread soaked in butter and half & half. The general consensus by everyone there was that the food quality was lacking. It may have to do with that tiny heat lamp I watched someone else's food sit under for 15 minutes while we were waiting to be seated. I think my husband and I were particularly displeased due to having been to Orange and knowing what Butter was attempting to pull off. I haven't been since and I don't intend to. It just wasn't good at all.

Lovely spot for brunch. Pancakes with sweet cream butter are incredible.
(5)Leslie D.
Great food and service! It's nice to have a place where you can get tofu scramble and vegan sausage. The full coffee bar is a great addition to my breakfast!
(5)Art J.
Butter Cafe is a great addition to the Dayton food scene! It is a small place focusing more on the food than the decor. Butter Cafe has good coffee -- a must for a breakfast and lunch place. We had the Jelly Donut Pancakes, Biscuits and Gravy, and one of the Breakfast platters. Everything was good. The pancakes were light and fluffy. They actually tasted like jelly donuts. Biscuits were a little heavier which was perfect. Gravy was creamy and had just the right amount of spice. Breakfast platter was good as well. The service was terrific. Staff was friendly and helpful. We bought a couple of cupcakes and had them later. Great. The location is great - close to the University of Dayton and very accessible. Cupcakes and pancakes are awesome.

I've been here for breakfast a couple times, once when it first opened and once again recently. I had pleasant experiences both times. I stuck with the pancakes the second time, since they were so good the first! Seriously, so good. They're huge, though, so you don't really need any sides. I would like to try dinner there at some point, and now that I live closer, go there for breakfast more often.

Now before you jump to conclusions, the name of the restaurant does not imply an extravagant amount of butter. In fact, Butter Cafe is just the opposite of unhealthy. The cafe offers organic ingredients, free range bacon (YES PLEASE!) and free range eggs. Gluten free bread and vegan sausage are also unique options compared to most breakfast places. Then there's the fun (less healthy) items like chocolate or butterscotch chip pancakes (unfortunately, not mixed into the batter), chai tea french toast or biscuits and gravy. I've sampled all of these and so far have not been disappointed. Prices are reasonable. Breakfast is served all day with a lunch menu I have yet to check out. Beware: It's a bit cold for winter; every time the door opens it's pretty drafty. All I need is some tea and good company to forget about that, though. Bonus: They deliver at the Miami Valley Hospital, the UD and nearby Dayton area. I've considered moving closer just for this.

with a name like Butter Cafe I expected there to be butter everywhere. The tables and chairs made of butter. butter plates, lights with butter around them, floor board butter, buttered drywall, melted butter water to drink. So I ordered the butter stuffed butter with a side of butter. ok I've buttered myself into a butter stupor by mentioning butter way to many times. If you are still reading then here is my actual review... great cozy place with a great selection of breakfast and lunch items, maybe to many choices but I don't need to pick away here. I like the place, french music playing overhead (i think), so maybe its french inspired, maybe, there was a french omelette. I ordered the Chicken pot pie and my dad ordered the chai french toast. They were both good, slightly pricey but good. I think the place has great potential. Perhaps a little quality control, (Gordon Ramsey style), this french toast is burnt, you donkey, and then throw it in the chefs face. Then he would learn not to turn the burnt side down like nobody would notice. Perhaps some spicy dishes for the UD students drunk from the night before, because I went to UD and yes that seemed to be the only thing they did. about a month ago, I also had some of their jelly donut style pancakes at the Taste of Kettering. Those were delicious. I know what I will be getting when I go back.

I was in town for a wedding and we came here twice... The first time I split the french toast with my bestie and had had scrambled eggs with spinach and cheese with bacon... real regular, but it was sooo good. I tried my friend Paris omelet which had caramelized onions I believe, and guyere cheese...now that was good! The next day I had the pancakes and bacon and some home fries... the cakes were huge and fluffy... this place does not disappoint. It's super clean and the staff was great!

The Butter Cafe reminds me of when I lived in New York City... A quaint, friendly cafe' with a bright understated interior. Locally owned and operated, this is the place to take your daughters for breakfast or to meet a friend for lunch. (And they serve free range everything!) Why not 5 Stars? No place is perfect, right? Enjoy going there a lot!

Fun little place to enjoy breakfast. Cute decor. Delicious food.

Not bad. We went for breakfast and lets be honest, it's hard to be blown away by breakfast food. It's all pretty much the same wherever you go. I had the biscuits and gravy. The biscuits are served in a bowl of gravy. I should've thought to ask to have them served in separate dishes so they didn't get soggy so fast. My mistake. The gravy was a tad bland. My girlfriend had a classic breakfast with eggs, sausage, toast, and potatoes. The potatoes were overly seasoned and she wasn't able to eat them. The bill was $19.78 without tip which is a little high for breakfast for two. The server was really nice and kept the coffee cups filled. Lastly, their floors and baseboards could stand to be washed. All in all just an ok place. I could've had the same breakfast at Frisch's for half the price.

This little café is a great new addition to the University of Dayton area. I stumbled upon it while shopping and I am so grateful to have done so! It's very affordable, they have quick counter or table service, and serve fresh, local food. Much of their offerings are organic and the meats are often free-range. It also has a number of gluten-free items on the menu. It's very encouraging to see cafés in Dayton starting to cater to those who have food allergies, but also to those that prefer healthier, fresh foods. I highly recommend this place to anyone that wants a quick, delicious meal. Or maybe just a cupcake to go! I look forward to my next visit to Dayton so I may again have breakfast at this café.

When Butter Cafe opened, it sounded pretty good - organic meats, eggs, veggies, etc. in a cute little storefront near UD. We're always on the lookout for a new breakfast joint on the weekends, so it was indeed a welcome addition. The interior is straight IKEA - literally the entire place could be one of the stops along the way in an IKEA store, and while we were there last we verified (and even purchased) that most of their stuff is Swedish. It's a cute place with cupcakes and donuts available as well (made in house and mostly organic from what we could tell), and they serve breakfast and lunch only. Breakfast is pretty good and offers standard fare of pancakes, omelets, etc. Once they got a heat lamp things improved, as initially they had no way to keep food warm and you'd be watching your omelet die slowly as the servers scurried about. The service started off fairly spotty (our first server was clearly terrified) but has definitely improved and seems to be pretty consistent now. Lunch is decent, I didn't love or hate my crab cake sandwich, and having a light organic green salad as a side option is always nice. My only suggestions would be that they concentrate on maintaining service quality as that would be the biggest thing that would keep folks away, and that they switch over to creamer bells for coffee cream vs. the shelf stable creamers. These are in a basket on the table, usually flavored as there is never enough plain cream, and they're a little on the stingy side when you ask for more (one time I asked for more cream and got ONE cream). Coffee is pretty good too which is a MUST if you serve breakfast. Overall a totally cute little place with decent food and service in an area which needed it. Looking forward to trying more of their menu and hoping that they stick around.

Over cooked omlet and the usual undercooked potatos. The are supposed to be brown.....

Sort the reviews by date and you'll see that the service has not been as much of an issue and the food has gotten better on delivery. I really think the place deserves a solid 4 stars overall. There is still room for improvement but I think if you addressed the issues with the food on the spot the chef would probably like the opportunity to put things right. Our server was sweet and attentive but we were the only ones in there at that time. ;) Now, let me talk for a bit about today's lunch experience/my first visit. I had been pretty excited about the caponata stuffed portobello that was on the Restaurant Week offering. That was before I saw the regular menu. So much potential yum staring me in the face that I had trouble deciding. I settled on the Avocado Melt and wasn't disappointed..... That being said, the kitchen falls into the same pit that other veg/vegan preparer do, lack of seasoning. My grandfather had an avocado orchard during my entire childhood so you can't get anything past me with regards to that fruit. Nothing in the world beats a freshly ripened avocado, eaten at it's peak but they always benefit from a light sprinkle of salt. Salt elevates a blah, commercial avocado to more than tolerable status. Without salt it lacks character and depth and is nothing but soft, green and flavorless. Many chefs working with veg/vegan fare assume that we don't want any flavor or seasonings with our food and nothing could be further from the truth. Now, grilled avocado is an incredibly easy dish to pull off. I really want to go back and try the Tofu Ruben! :) And I kind of expected more desserts, perhaps because of the name. If you're already making pancakes, it's just a short hop from there to crepes with some seasonal fruits.

Ate here for breakfast for the first time in July 2011. It's great to find somewhere that is local and committed to high quality ingredients (especially at such affordable prices!). The breakfast burrito was delicious! The eggs were light and fluffy and the homemade salsa was bright and fresh. The coffee is nice and strong. The bacon was crisp and flavorful. Pretty large portions when considering the quality and price. Only downside (and this was a small one) was the noise. There happened to be a group of six at another table whose noise carried throughout the main dining room. Overall, I would recommend Butter Cafe for those looking for a breakfast that is delicious, filling, affordable and responsible.

This place was awesome. I had placed a delivery for the Paris omelet and lox bagel. They were both excellent choices and the prices where wonderful. The food was still hot even though it was like -2 outside that day. The ingredients I could tell were very fresh and homemade. I am a vegetarian so this restaurant is my new bff.

I wish I could rate this place 3.5 stars. I ordered the biscuits and gravy, which was rather bland. However, I tried some of my friend's chorizo omelette, which was quite good. (This was one of three breakfast specials they offered, which may change from time to time.) All-in-all, I think the Butter Cafe is worth a second (or third or fourth) visit. I'll try one of the pancake plates next time, which are humongous.

Waited a very long time for uncomfortable seating (our chairs were falling apart), sub par food, and pretty awful service. At least the food was hot.

Honestly not sure if I like this place. Albeit, I've only been here twice, but my husband and I were grossed out by the sticky floors both times. I got a standard breakfast (2 eggs, bacon, wheat toast, and breakfast potatoes). Eggs were cooked exactly how I ordered them, bacon was "snap-in-half-able" (way overcooked), wheat toast had grease rather than butter on it (yuk!), and the breakfast potatoes were seriously disgusting (mushy, so greasy they were soggy, and just didn't taste good). My husband gets embarrassed when I send food back, so when the server asked how our food was I just asked if the potatoes were always so "mushy." The waiter said it just depends how long the cook leaves them on the grill. I didn't ask for my potatoes to be replaced, but the server brought me some crispy ones, which was nice. They were perfectly crisped this time, but they were still disgustingly soggy with grease. Oh well, now I know to stick with pancakes or french toast at this place. My husband had an omelette (can't remember which one) that had turkey and some kind of cheese in it and had ranch dressing on top. My husband said he almost gagged because the cheese tasted so bad, but he liked the turkey, so he just took the turkey out and ate that. He also had potatoes on his plate and after one bite could not get himself to eat anymore of them. Last time we went (on a weekend morning when it was very busy) the food was great, so maybe they just had a bad cook this morning? I might have one or two more "tries" left in me for this cafe, but I doubt I'll be able to get my husband to go back. :(

We stopped here during a little day trip to Dayton a few weeks ago and immediately fell in love. Although the lunch items (a veggie sandwich and portobello burger) we ordered were just pretty good, not amazing, we instantly wished we'd ordered breakfast instead. Huge vegan burritos and inventive pancake options surrounded us, and we were pretty jealous. So, for dessert, we special-ordered a single Peep pancake. It was basically the best thing ever. I'm definitely looking forward to coming back and trying a burrito (or pancakes... or both...) next time I'm in town.

Went here recently for breakfast. Service was just ok. I ordered the french toast skewers, a fun and different way to serve french toast: skewered pieces of french toast along with grilled pineapple and strawberries, all sprinkled with toasted coconut. A pretty good dish that should have been better; the french toast itself was tasteless, but paired with the fruit and coconut it brought it up a notch. Add a little vanilla or cinnamon to the french toast and it would be a great dish. I'll definitely give this place a try again...maybe for lunch next time.

We were trying to find something besides Panera and Chipotle for lunch, and found Butter on a drive-by past the UD campus. a nice bright little place--as a number of previous reviewers noted, the Ikea-grade furniture has seen better days, but certainly clean and inviting. Our food was good but not mind-blowingly so...a BLT, spinach salad, and mac/cheese for the 8-year old. Total bill came to $27, which seemed about right. Two service flubs: first, some menu ambiguity that our waitress questioned, and then took it upon herself to cancel part of my wife's order. I wish she would have checked with us before changing the order. Second, our waitress' commitment to cleaning the bathroom superseded the delivery of our check. I appreciate a clean commode, but I also like being able to leave when I finish.

I stopped in for lunch on Wednesday and got a Reuben to go. The sandwich was great, and served with tater tots, mmmmm. The decor is really cute and inviting, and the menu looked great. I can't wait to try more things, especially the french toast kabobs!

My friends and I stopped by Butter for brunch and loved it. The decor is adorable and the atmosphere was very quaint. We were all impressed by the menu options and my coffee-drinking friend said theirs was wonderful. I got their tofu scramble, which was absolutely wonderful. My friends got the bacon and avocado omelet and the biscuits and gravy, which both looked great. The only slight downside was that the cafe was so busy that our waitress was hard to flag down. I was so happy with my food, I decided to get a muffin on the way out. Once again, the only slight downside was that they used a napkin to wrap it, which then stuck to the top and made eating it pretty awkward. Other than the few minor mishaps, we loved Butter and I would definitely go back!

I came here on a Wednesday morning with 14 other people I work with. We called when we were on the way and they had the table ready for us when we got here. It is much larger than it seems from outside and the decor is adorable. Waitresses were personable and attentive and all of the food was amazing. Our table got everything from corned beef hash, to pancakes, to omelets, and everything was delicious. They keep the coffee coming, which is also delicious. They have a case up front with various cupcakes that all look very tasty, but we were too full by the time we finished eating to even think about them. I wish I was from Ohio so I could come here more often!

My wife and I went on a recommendation by a local coworker. We love these small local places. Service was great and the server made various recommendations. Food came out quickly and was hot and delicious. Even had fruity pebble desert to bring back for son. Would recommend place to anyone.

I recently went to Butter Cafe while passing through Dayton and I will say it was okay. I definitely didn't have a 5 star experience but it wasn't bad either. It may not help things that I am vegan so the menu is semi limited for me. I got a black bean burger and home fries. There was nothing special about the burger but it wasn't bad. The home fries were a mess. They managed to have them both burnt and cold which was disappointing. The location itself is cute and the staff was friendly enough. I ordered a couple of cupcakes to go and I am 99% certain that the chocolate one they gave me wasn't vegan. If I happen to be in the area and nothing else jumps out at me, I will come back, but I won't be racing back just to eat here. Hopefully I just caught them on an off day.

Gahhhhhhhh! This place is so frustrating! Every time my boyfriend and I want to go get breakfast we always think to go to Butter. The problem is that every time we go something goes wrong. Their location and decor is awesome. The whole vibe of the menu is great, especially with all the vegan options. HOWEVER, the wait staff is kinda mean, and the food is never what you want it to be. There's usually too much grease or something is cooked wrong. The blueberries on top of my pancakes were still frozen the other week...that was the first time I've sent back food. I just want Butter to start giving a shit because it's such a nice spot. If they step up the food game ( and stop being unnecessarily sassy to their customers) then this will be my favorite breakfast place in Dayton.

This spot is adorable. We found ourselves there on a Sunday morning with quiet a line at the door. Once our name was added to the list, the staff efficiently moved through the list and got us to our table in a pretty quick fashion. Once seated we were able to watch all of the employees rushing around, looking like a colony of ants! Everything looked good on the menu and ultimately I ended up ordering the traditional french toast with strawberries and Nutella. The french toast was served as 4 Texas toast slices. It was a healthy portion and certainly more than I could eat. For a $1 each for my strawberries and Nutella, I was honestly a little disappointed. I received a small plastic cup of Nutella and there were about 3 strawberries quartered over my french toast. Nonetheless, it still tasted delicious! I also shared a side of their breakfast potatoes. They were fresh and hot. WE did feel that they needed a little salt, but you can't please everyone. They kept the coffee coming with the prompt & friendly service. If I find myself in Dayton again, I would certainly frequent Butter Cafe. Next time I think I'd venture to one of their savory brunch offerings. Yum!
(4)Christine S.
Setting: adorable. Staff: super friendly Food: meh. So sad. It was not what I was expecting! I had the chai french toast, and there was so much butter I couldn't taste the custard. The house potatoes were delicious, so I'm sure there ares quality-redeeming dishes on the menu.
(4)Melanie C.
The french toast kabobs and corn beef hash plate made for the best breakfast thus far! Butter Cafe had a laid back atmosphere and great service.
(5)Bianca D.
The ambiance/decor is great and that's about it. I loved that Butter was independent and hoped they would be something phenomenal. Not at all the case Food and coffee are mediocre at best With the prices presented they can't boast value either. their champagne and sorbet brunch cocktail should be avoided. $9-10 gets you the tiniest flute half full of sorbet and the cheapest champagne (bud light would have tasted better). Whoever made it had dollar signs in their eyes.
(2)Zakiya T.
The only thing I like about this place was the rye toast, the seasonal fruit, and the friendly server... All the food was bland. Everything contained processed white sugar! Not a good place for the health conscious vegan...unless you enjoy bland food and limited options
(1)Tieu M.
So here's my personal rundown of this place. So the people are super super nice. The cupcake we tried (chocolate non-vegan) was super dry like it was there from the day before. The latte with almond milk was okay but I had to ask for raw sugar. The mimosas were fantastic. I ordered the crab cake and they looked amazing and it also came with a hair in it. The staff were very sorry and removed the dish off our tab. The staff is so friendly! I hope you have a better experience than me! Enjoy!

I found myself at the Butter Cafe earlier this afternoon. It was the first time that each of the three of us in my party visited. I have heard excellent things about the establishment, and I was excited to take in the experience. We arrived during non-peak hours and was seated fairly shortly after arrival. Part of the charm of this location seems to be the spirit of community among those waiting to get a table. There is a gathering outside of the doors on most days during the peak times. The outside of the cafe faces Brown Street, which is a cornucopia of urban dwellers, college students, and suburbanites making their way through the bustling thoroughfare. The interior of the building is an eclectic mix of tables and chairs of various forms offering different seating arrangements to accommodate the parties. There seemed to be plenty of seating for the location, yet still offered enough space for diners to not feel overcrowded. The walls were a bright, cheerful yellow, no doubt an homage to the namesake of the cafe. Several pieces of art covered the walls, each seemingly different styles, but brought together by the cafe. The water was served in mason jars and great carafes from Ikea, yet another nod to the eclectic nature of the cafe. The host was pleasant and seemed to work quickly to find seating for our party. The waitress was very kind. She made sure that we were having a great experience throughout our meal. She was very attentive, but not overbearing. I ordered one of the specials, the chorizo omelet and a coffee. My counterparts had the club and the bacon, tomato, and avocado omelet. Everyone at the table enjoyed their selection. My omelet had chorizo, queso, jalapeños, and a sour cream and cilantro mix on the side. It is served with seasoned potatoes. The omelet had a great blend of flavors, none overpowering the others. The jalapeños are pickled, giving the characteristic vinegar flavor profile and heat to each bite. The meat was spiced properly giving the omelet that distinct chorizo flavor. The sour cream and cilantro mix was excellent. It provided the tangy taste of the sour cream with citrus flavor of the cilantro. The seasoned potatoes were fried, lightly in oil. The taste of the potatoes and the blend of seasoning used was a delight in each bite. One way to tell if a potato dish is tasty in my book is the lack of desire to add anything to it, and these potatoes did just that. They had that right amount of earthy taste to let you know you were eating a potato, not a potato product. The coffee, which I always drink mine black, had a great flavor to it. It was just robust enough with a slight bitter flavor. Overall, I had a positive experience at the Butter Cafe. The price isn't bad. I spent $9.95 for the omelet and seasoned potatoes, which seems reasonable and comparable to meals of similar quality. I would recommend this restaurant to people.
(5)Daniel W.
Just because you are next to a yoga studio doesn't mean I don't want a 3$ amount of bacon. Did the pigs boycott Butter? Are they having a union dispute with the pork population? I'm worried the pigs have been Jimmy Hoffa'ed... They are nowhere to be found at Butter.
(2)Beth H.
Pretty great for vegans. Pancakes. Cupcakes. Always a wait, so be prepared. Cute, small. Wish they were open later but serve breakfast all day.
(4)Kate L.
This was my second time being here and both times have been great! Good service, they were busy this time but they were very good at paying attention to everyone's needs. Great prices, good food, and good service. Can't beat it.
(5)Jei R.
Positives: My wife really likes this place. They use quality ingredients, so she feels comfortable ordering anything off the menu. The ambiance is nice, casual, and lively. Seems to be popular with the local college crowd. Negatives: I like their potatoes, but nothing really stands out for me food wise, though admittedly there is a lot on the menu I've yet to try. They messed up my order of pancakes the last time. It was a while before I saw our waitress and they tasted fine, so I ate them. When I saw our waitress and mentioned it, you could tell that she had already figured it out. Not a big deal, but it would have been better if she had come over, apologized, and offered to make it right. Conclusion: If an organic, lively cafe appeals to you, then I'd give this place a shot. If you are more interested in a reasonably priced greasy spoon, then you'd probably fair better elsewhere.

My brother was in town and he is vegan so i thought we could give this place a shot. AMAZING! Its a cool little local restaurant in an old house near UD. They told us it would probably be about 30 minutes before they could seat us. It ended up taking 10. Nice! The first thing I want to compliment them on is their coffee. Love it. Now for the food. Im not vegan but i ordered the vegan breakfast burrito and WOW! That thing was incredible. It comes with a side of the best seasoned potatoes I have ever had for breakfast. My brother got the tofu scramble and he was equally impressed. He lives in Chicago so I figured he may be critical. Not this time :) The service was decent. We waited a bit for that second cup but they were busy and we tried to just chill out. I would recommend maybe having pots you can leave at the table or have a person walking around just topping off coffee. Other than that it was a great experience. I cant wait to go back.
(5)Rachel H.
Ordered the Reuben and it was really lacking... Cheese wasn't even melted, wasn't grilled. It took a long time to get our food. Bloody Mary was pretty good. Stick with the French toast if you come here. You have to be in a sweet tooth mood.
(3)Jennifer R.
Been there twice. Small place, but good food. The jelly donut pancakes are delicious! We split them because it is a very large portion. Good coffee too!
(4)Julie T.
I remember going to this café when it first opened. I thought the place was cute and hoped they would continue to thrive in Dayton and here they still are in 2015! I visited the area a weekend ago and was so happy to see the place stuffed full of people. moving on -- it's a great little local restaurant that is very veggie and vegan friendly. I'm a pescatarian and was impressed to see a lox bagel breakfast option. my friend ordered some pancakes that looked absolutely delicious too. I was also excited that there was white and green tea options other than the normal black and chamomile options most restaurants carry. after working in a tea shop a bit, I learned that green and white teas can be more expensive and harder to obtain, so point for Butter Café. the only thing I didn't like was the coffee. it was the first time I had Butter's coffee and it was absolutely awful. I like to drink very dark coffee with nothing added and there was just something weird about their coffee, even when I tried to add a little cream or sugar, which I would never normally do. it tasted sour or perhaps like some soap or sanitizer residue was still in my cup when the coffee was poured? anyway, this was the only problem I had and would still highly recommend Butter to friends.
(4)tages t.
Dayton is a small town, so it might be hard to find vegan/vegetarian options. Butter Cafe did not disappoint. It may be one of the only places in town that has a vegan option for breakfast and it was good! The hashbrown potatoes were amazing. I believe they boil them mash them a bit and fry them up!! So tasty! I also appreciate they consider where their food is produced and they try to do it in a sustainable way. We went on a weekend and was super packed. However since it was only a party of 2 we were seated immediately. If you go with more than two expect to wait for a bit.
(5)Luiza M.
Not impressed with the food. It is a nice restaurant and the decorations are awesome, but the food is ok.
(2)Adi C.
I have tried to like this place so many times and leave feeling disappointed every single time. Its really sad. Their coffee is terrible. The menu is limited and the food is expensive and has been either cold or not very tasty each time. Last time my fiancé got a build your own omelette and he asked to add avocado to it. They charged $1.50 for half an avocado that was almost rotten and turning black. My omelette was cold. C'mon guys, I expected better.
(2)Dashania G.
I traveled to Dayton to visit a friend of mine and we decided that we wanted to venture out so we asked Siri about some nearby restaurants. Butters was a mile away and had pretty good reviews so we were amped to try it out. The atmosphere was cute and retro and the service was great! But the food was tasteless. I had a spinach and feta omelet which came along with home fries. The home fries looked like they were going to be tasty but they too were tasteless. My ideal plate requires for me not to even to look at any condiments because it full of flavor; my experience at Butter's was the total opposite.
