Italian Cuisine
The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.
Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.
If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.

I've read the reviews from NYE & I can't believe they're talking about the same restaurant I sooo enjoyed last night. My friend & I tried going to Windward Passage at 6:15 on a Friday what were we thinking?! I knew Of Nicola's location, but had never eaten here. We were able to be seated immediately, the hostess, I think the chef's wife, was very courteous & friendly. The atmosphere is intimate, you can actually have a conversation! Our server, Alex, was friendly, courteous & attentive. He gave us a wine suggestion that was very enjoyable. I had a special, seafood lasagna, that was delicious. My friend had a pasta dish also that she enjoyed. I believe they must make their own pasts, it was so fresh tasting. We both are anxious to make a return visit very soon. They have a private room that we're thinking of booking for our bookclub.

I would have been better off getting a $1 can of Chef Boyardie from Kroger because thats exactly what this food tastes like. Quite possibly the worse italian food in Columbus...or Ohio for that fact....

This is my new favorite Italian place to dine in Columbus! I just discovered Nicola last week. They make their sauce, noodles and meatballs from scratch. You can taste the difference. I ordered the lasagna (and went back again for it already). The family is very sweet. They've moved here from Italy and opened their own restaurant. Husband, wife, brother, daughter... I love supporting places like this. They even gave us a complimentary tiramisu. And they carry a bottle of wine from the city where they used to live in Italy - though I forget the name, you should order it!

Absolutely fabulous food. Truly made with Italian love and passion. Wonderful service from our waitress and the owner.

My friend and I stumbled on this gem by accident. The decor is very nice and service was good. The food was excellent. I had a caesar salad which was great. As my main dish I got the special, which was cheese tortellini with prosciutto, peas, and mushrooms in a cream sauce. It was AMAZING. I got the tiramisu to go and it was great. I cannot wait to go back to this place!

Great food great service, and the owners of the restaurant are there every time I go. You can tell the owners of this authentic Italian restaurant care and are welcoming you into their home!

I had heard good things, so maybe I just went on an off night. I won't be returning to find out. It's in a strip mall. No getting around that. It's pretty clean, decorated good enough. So pretty average here. The service? Absolutely horrendous. I understand I'm not a regular and judging from the crowd about 30 years younger than the average diner, but did this dude seriously think I'm going to stiff him on a tip or don't know how to order wine? About 15 minutes after sitting there the waiter made his way over to take our drink order. He brought me the wrong drink - twice. He offered no specials and was generally pretty rude. So maybe the food at this place is just outstanding? Wrong. It was awful. Columbus doesn't have much when it comes to italian, but in all seriousness the microwaved mush they serve at olive garden is just as good. I had the veal alla nicola which is just a couple of thin pieces of flavorless veal with some melted cheese and hollandaise sauce? I'm not sure what it was supposed to be. The risotto cake it sat on was ice cold. Girlfriend has a chicken and shrimp dish with literally the tiniest pieces of shrimp I've ever seen. She didn't care for it, but had them box it up and we left it there on the table. And I should probably say something about price. I don't really care what restaurants charge as long as they can back it up with reasonable food. If I have to pay $60 for chicken fingers that's fine as long as they are pretty good chicken fingers. Nicola is not pretty good food, so in that sense it is ridiculously overpriced. It seems a little petty to rip them on yelp, when I probably could have complained there and should have sent my cold food back. But it was a cold, late friday night and after dealing with waiter, I realized I just wanted to get the hell out of there.

Love Nicola's. Great restaurant, atmosphere and staff. I've been for dinner several times as well as one of their wine tastings. The food is fantastic as well as the wine selection. If you want great Italian at a reasonable price with great service, this is the place. And if you want a great wine tasting experience, they seem to be having these once a month now. Planning on going to the next one. Check out their web site as the wine tasting menu is posted. It is every bit as good as it sounds.

I love Italian food and was excited when our server explained that everything at Nicola's is hand made, fresh daily. I ordered the $29 steak dinner, and I was pleased that the meat was high quality but, disappointed that it was under seasoned. I figured I'd move on to the stack of "rosemary potatoes" and was further disappointed to find that they tasted like plain potatoes dropped into a fryer (no flavor other than slightly under-cooked potato). When our waitress returned, I explained that I was unhappy with the dish. She didn't ask what I didn't like but, offered to exchange it for something else. So, I ordered the chicken Marsala. After a short wait our waitress dropped off the new dish and immediately left the dining area. I only mention this because I had no silverware. Eventually, I decided to grab silverware from a nearby table instead of waiting for my dish to grow cold (when I mentioned this to the server her response was "Ok"). People make mistakes and I'm sure she didn't realize she had removed all of my silverware with the previous plate but, her lack of interest in this bit of information struck me as odd. Anyway, I tried the chicken and it was fine but, again, a bit under seasoned. My biggest complaint about the chicken Marsala was the namesake sauce, it was thin and a bit weak. The chunks of raw corn starch in the sauce explained the thin consistency and flavor of the sauce, thickening sauce with corn starch is NOT the same as allowing it to reduce. I decided I'd used my one big restaurant complaint for the evening and let it go but, two disappointing dishes, knowing that the kitchen takes shortcuts that negatively affect the food, and experiencing the somewhat apathetic service I won't be back.

I chose Nicola for a date night with my husband as I have driven by several times and was curious what it was like. We were easily able to make reservations on their website through OpenTable. I was immediately impressed by the atmosphere. It's not what I expected from the little plaza that it's in, but it's actually quite nice. Our waiter was very friendly and attentive, as was the chef's wife who came around. We started off with a delicious bottle of riesling and bruschetta for our appetizer. The bruschetta was quite good, but I was disappointed that we only got three pieces. They brought out homemade bread, which was just ok. The first batch had butter with it, but they brought out an oil/balsamic dip for the second, which made it much better. I ordered the Gamberi alla Pavarotti, which was basically pasta with shrimp wrapped in bacon - two of my favorite things. It was SO good and perfectly portioned as well. I'd definitely go back.

We love stopping by Nicola's after a long work week or just a glass of wine to relax. The staff is UNBELIEVABLY friendly and accomodating. The owners are always there to greet you and make you feel welcome. We recommend this bar/restaurant to anyone looking for an upscale place to relax. The food is amazing.

Kind of loud in there but the food makes up for it. Pistachio crusted Sea Bass special was the best tasting fish I have ever had. I will come back and order that again.

Amazing food & service! I have been here a few times and have never been disappointed. Easily one of my favorites!

It's really a rarity that something can please me enough to give a four star review--but I really liked Nicola. The food was excellent for the most part, I liked the atmosphere and the drink prices were on the low end of the range for a restaurant like this. I was here last Saturday with my companion--we got here around 8. We didn't plan on going here, but we were headed over this way and driving by to go to Grandview for dinner and I said "Damn, that's where Nicola is? I've heard it's good, let's go there." So we went there, it was packed but no wait for a table, got a nice seat by the bar. There's something about Columbus and good restaurants in strip malls...I guess. Anyway, friends were raving about Nicola so I really wanted to eat here. Our waiter promptly came over and we both ordered manhattans on the rocks--they were perfect, just like I make them at home, I had knob creek and she had maker's--nice and strong. We sipped on these while we perused the menu. I love pate, and rarely see it on a menu, so I had to get it here. It was amazing--although, I've never really had "bad pate"--it's not difficult to make, but it was as good as any. It was served spread onto some cibatta toasts and accented by a field greens salad, and topped with some shaved parm. I also had a house salad--not something I would normally order--and was unimpressed. It was advertised with fresh mozzerella--which it indeed had--but the fresh mozzerella was limited to three literally pea sized balls, well maybe garbanzo bean sized, but anyway you get the idea. The dressing was excellent, but the salad overall was boring. Like I said, not something I would normally order anyway--this is maybe a salad that would be served at a dayspa, just kind of gourmet, healthy and boring, etc. But, not a big deal, I don't really like salad in general. For dinner we split a bottle of Syrah, a 2006 Mirabile--it was incredible, priced at $29 if I remember right. We ordered this right before our entrees came out, and being a 2006 it definitely got better as it breathed a little. I will say the bottle was slightly warm and this is a wine I like closer to a cellar temperature. But, this isn't a wine bar so no biggie. For dinner I got some pappardelle pasta with duck confit--this was really good. No complaints and they certainly didn't skimp on the duck. I know I said I didn't have any complaints, but I do have a suggestion--there were some what seemed to be canned tomatoes on the pasta that seemed to have just been "thrown in," and they were out of place and just not tasty...I had to pick around them, so maybe they can just leave them out? By the way--they make their pasta here in house, and if you like homemade pasta like I do you will definitely get along with this place. Homemade pasta is just so much better. My friend had a filet and we both agreed it was good, but not great. This is an Italian place though, not a steakhouse. However, it was cooked on point to a perfect medium rare, so plus for that. We were too full for dessert so finished the wine and headed out. Service was great, food was good, atmosphere was nice--nice cutlery, linen, nice glassware--and the prices were where I'd expect them to be for the food but low for the drinks. Our manhattans were $6-7.00, which I thought was a good price based upon my extensive manhattan drinking experience. I can't wait to go back, as everything on the menu was calling out at me and making a dinner choice was tough--but if in doubt, I always order duck.

This was the worst customer service I had. I ordered the elk and it came with nuts. And I am allergic to nuts. The Elk was terrible. The flavors were terrible and too crazy. I sent the elk back and the owner came to me and asked what was wrong with the elk. I told her the flavors were too crazy and she told me it's because the nuts were not on it. She told me that it wasn't good without the nuts. So it was my fault that it was bad. She was going to still make me pay. And I told her I didn't feel like I was going to pay. Then she told me then she was going to make the waiter pay because he failed to tell me that without the nuts it would taste funny. And then she lectured me that if I was to take the elk back for me, she'd have to do that for every customer. Then she told me next time I come back I need to think of her as a business owner, she has to go through certain risks. It was terrible. She was awful. The food is terrible. The waiter did come back to me and apologized and he was very nice but the owner was terrible, the food is overpriced and awful.

Just returned from a wonderful dinner at Nicola. After reading several reviews and discovering on Open Table they could accommodate a party of 11, we choose to celebrate my son's graduation party here. After spending a semester in Florence, Italy, he loved the menu and we were not disappointed. Our waiter John was outstanding and great fun. Our greeting at the restaurant was like family and the food was as good as the trattorias we have dined at in Tuscany. My dad's cioppino was better than what he has had in SF. Not only did our family members love the dinner but it was a great touch for Nicola to join us near the end of the meal to congratulate our son and asked if we enjoyed the meal. If you are looking for excellent, authentic Italian food and a place that welcomes guests like family, this is the place to come. We live two hours away and we know we will be coming back.

My wife and I had lunch at Nicola today. We were seated fairly promptly and then after a long wait, when we were about to leave, a server showed up and gave us water. When questioned he went to find out how much the buffet lunch cost as the price was not on the menu. He came back told us the price and we never saw him again. We both had the buffet. We were not asked about drinks ever and after eating and waiting more just left the payment on the table as we never got a bill. The food was ordinary at best. The bread pudding was rock hard on top and soggy on the bottom. Perhaps it was several days old. The salad greens were visibly not fresh. Our table would have been better off without the flowers in a clear vase of dirty water.

I had the salmon risotto and did not care for it at all. Not enough salmon and for $22 I think a more protein should have been included. I do think everyone else in our party enjoyed their meal so the rating is for my entree. Their dinner salads are too large. With a piece of protein on it, it would be a generous portion. Our waiter was very attentive and informative. Between salad and entree we waited about 30 minutes on a Monday night with only 3 other tables filled. It might have been my risotto but he never said that risotto prep would take that long. Had I known, I would have ordered something else.
