This place is great! The fried rice was delicious. Ask for Tom to be your cook. We each had the two combo and got chicken and steak. Great choice! There lunch is open til 2:30.

This place is a diamond in the rough. The price is good, the portions are large, the sushi is awesome, and he chefs are a hoot. Let me start off by saying I've never seen this place busy but don't let that scare you away. The waitress/hostesses are ok could be better but the chefs are great. One reason I feel that they are never busy is the location. It's right off hustling Hilliard-Rome rd. but it faces the wrong way. It faces walmart and is slotted next to the movie theatre. I also do not feel they market their business well. There isn't even a sign that eats people on the road know they're there. If they were to advertise on the electronic billboard above McDonalds they might get more business. I've been here a few times but I'm going to write about my last visit. My girlfriend and I attended to celebrate our being together foe 4 years. We were seared immediately and they were not busy. We ordered the spicy tuna and California roll as appetizers and were amazed at the quality and taste of the sushi for the price (somewhere around $6 per roll). Our dinner order was taken promptly and we were glad to finally get Luis for our hibachi chef. He was great and we laughed so hard at his antics and were thrilled by is skills. The portions were huge., we both took more than half our food home for delicious leftovers. The food was delicious. I will definitely be back. Give this westside gem a shot. The food in great and the portions are large.

I went here for lunch on a Sunday around 11:30AM. My experience correlates with the other reviews; it's not that busy and the hostess could be more hospitable and service-oriented. I ordered the Pick Two Combo (Filet Mignon & Chicken - WHICH SADLY DOES NOT INCLUDE SHRIMP APPETIZER), which was $14.50 (slightly more than House of Japan which is about $12 and DOES include a shrimp appetizer). When looking at the menu, I noticed dinner seemed like the better value once I looked at the menu (would be around $18 with a shrimp appetizer and possibly a little larger portions). With what I ordered, I was given the standard soup (salad was the other choice), soft drink, and vegetables. The vegetables were awesome, since I was able to pick what I wanted out of bean sprouts, broccoli, carrots, onions, and mushrooms. The quality was pretty good and comparable to other typical Japanese steakhouses, although the steamed rice portion was definitely larger than House of Japan. The chef was your typical cheesy joke type that you would get at Genji, though food was well prepared. Bottom line: Because I am more of the type to choose with a higher emphasis on value, I would pick here for dinner, rather than lunch. I would rather have House of Japan during lunch hours, but would come here if I had to pick a Japanese steakhouse during dinner hours.

We went to this place very excited looking for good beer good sushi but much to our dismay we were disappointed when they didn't have some of the things that we inquired about. Overall the service was kind of biased for us since we got the new girl. Food was decent however we would try another place before coming back to this restaurant.

I agree with SW, I have been here 3 times and each time, Louis has been our cook and the food has been really good. They serve the biggest shrimp ive seen yet from a Hibachi place in Columbus. The soup and salad are nothing to write home about, and both our pretty blah, but Louis really can cook it up. Fried rice is really good, and the veggies dont appear to be fresh, but they are ok. The filet they give you for lunch is huge, like 12-14 oz serving for lunch. My friend that ordered was shocked they give you that big of a portion for lunch. Scallops are really well done, never burnt and taste very good-Not mushy at all. The lunch specials they have are really good- Pick any 2 entrees for 14 bucks. Each time i have been, the place has been pretty dead for lunch on a weekend, I am not sure if it can make in the economy.

Really great meal. Chef was fun and made the onion volcano =) had spicy crunchy tuna roll wich was high quality, boyfriend and I both had steak and scallops, scallops were firm and steak was just right, portions were large and prices comparable to other restaurants of the same kind

Visited this place for the first time last night. (Saturday at 7pm) Upon walking in it was clear that they were understaffed. There was a family that walked in just before us and was seated at the remaining four seats of the ONLY grill that had people at it. We were seated alone and got the impression we would be there for a LONG time. After waiting about 5 minutes we placed our drink order, another 5 minutes to get it. We caught a chef who peeked his head out to say "wow we have people here"... Another bad sign. He actually ended up cooking our food before the people who were sat before us (good for us, bad for them) Food was actually pretty decent... But the decor and staff were subpar. We only saw one hostess, one waitress, and one cook... On a Saturday night at 7pm! Several people came in while out meal was being cooked... But because they cooked our meal first.. those people were seated at a third table... Two of the three couples walked out when they realized that it was going to take a LONG time to get their food. The family who walked in before us couldn't have been more trashy though... The kid kept farting every 5 minutes and ended up having to check his pants after one. The dad kept burping which made the kid laugh, and made him do it even more. The mom and daughter were using profane language the whole time. While not the fault of the restaurant... A GOOD restaurant would have had a staff member or manager politely say something to them. All in all it wasn't a good experience. If it wasn't for the terrible staff, and atmosphere... We would go back. But as it stands... It seems like it is more of a front than an actual restaurant.

Being a fan of sushi, I decided to check this place out. The first thing I noticed was that I was one of 5 people in the restaurant, right at lunch time, and the other four were a single group. A single hostess/waitress (the only staff member I could see) sat me at a booth and handed me a menu. The menu was a little complicated to understand and the prices seemed a little bit high to me. I asked if they had any lunch specials, and she pointed to one small square on the menu that listed four things which prices and no details. I ordered the scallop hibachi lunch with the salad and steamed rice. The salad was pretty good, it came with some sort of onion ginger sauce, and the lettuce was good consistency. The hibachi lunch was stir fry and while it tasted pretty good, I wasn't sure what to do with the steamed rice or the two bowls of sauce that they brought me. Did I put the sauce on the rice? Was I supposed to add the rice to the stir fry? I wasn't sure. The scallops were perfectly cooked and the vegetables were delicious as well. Until leaving, I didn't have any issues with the food quality, but about five or ten minutes later, I started to have some stomach issues. I won't be returning. If you're looking for a good sushi bar, I suggest Wild Ginger Asian Fusion, which is one block over next to Giant Eagle.

This is the only hibatchi we will eat now. The salad dressing is not to bitter. The yum yum is the best ever. The ginger is edible where as the other places I couldnt eat it. The waitress changes but the cooks are so nice!

Well We never made it to the food. After walking in on a Monday night there was one person working the counter . after waiting 5 min for her to look up and address us it took another few min to be seated. There were some people leaving and 2 tables that were waiting for a cook. They took our drink order after waiting for nearly ten min for drinks or a cook we decided to leave. Obviously understaffed which usually means quality issues as well. I can't imagine I'll try this place again.

The place is nice. Unfortunately the sushi bar is hidden and we had to wait unusually long since the person who sat us there didn't tell anyone. The waitress made up for it and was incredibly polite. She was an excellent waitress once she knew we were there. The prices were decent for the quality of the food. I'm from California and having a really hard time finding good sushi in Columbus.
(3)Jenny M.
It was not the worst experience ever. The food was ok. Our hibachi Chef was really entertaining, The staff in general was friendly. Our waiter was really nice but umm shall we say overwhelmed and caused quite a bit of confusion. The price was ok. I have enjoyed other hibachi experiences and food much more.

Not a great experience. Not even a good one. We went in last night (Saturday) around 8pm, expecting it to be busy. There were 4 people in the whole place. That should have been a sign. The hostess was obviously inconvenienced by having to seat us, for it took away from her flirting time with another teenager at the bar... Sat down, placed our order and waited. And waited. We took a good look at the grill while we were waiting, and it was not cleaned very well by whoever cooked on it last. Finally, a chef who we couldn't understand, came out to start cooking. Luckily, he cleaned it some more before he put any food on it. I think he was afraid of the grill too. As he was putting our food on our plates, the appetizer that we ordered when we sat down, steamed dumplings, came out. They were not good at all. Undercooked and really chewy... I ordered my steak medium, and it was beyond well. The scallops were burnt on one side, and some of the veggies were almost raw still. I guess if the chef wasn't more concerned with watching the basketball game over our shoulders on the tv at the bar, he would have done a better job. I would have said something, but as soon as he was done, he disappeared. Heck, everyone disappeared. No way will I go back here.

Love this place I have been there so many times they know me and my friend. The soup is amazing! Every time I go I leave suffed and happy! Some of the servers are clueless but the chefs are amazing.

As a Westsider, I feel self-aware enough to call out Westside stereotypes when I see them. That said, there is no better description of this place than the Westside Japanese Steakhouse. I had to try this place as I do like a good greasy, aromatic Japanese Steakhouse now and then and have tried most of them in Columbus over the years. So I took the family over for dinner last week.. The place looked OK, it was about half full and we were seated immediately. I knew this was a different kind of steakhouse when our "Chef"'s name was Luis! My wife ordered a drink from the bar, which the waitress forgot about, no big deal, it was a good drink when it finally came. My issues mostly echo what others have said. The food here is the same menu as other Japanese Steakhouses but just not as good. The sakura sauce had a really acrid, salty taste instead of buttery richness, the scallops were relatively small, the fried rice was bland and salty. Not worth the price compared to other places I've been in town. Sushi bar = nice guy working there, but hardly any sushi - half the items on the list weren't available; just California rolls, tuna, salmon and mackerel. The white bread and miracle whip of sushi fixin's! The real "West Side Story" was the people in the place. My wife works in jail and nailed it when she said that everyone in the place looks like they just got out of jail! The waitress looked like a pro, the busboy was frontin' at us all night....At our table were meth-heads, the table next to ours looked like sex offenders and DV perps. Next to them were westside wifebeater-wearing hood-rats - spiderweb tattoos, teardrops. Kinda funny, kinda sad how stereotypical westside the place was. Makes me proud to be a westsider to see how they were representin', but I don't expect to feel like a probation officer when I go out to a restaurant. I'll pass next time I want decent Japanese Steakhouse food and there is no reason to get sushi here with some other much better options nearby.

I've only had take out sushi from here and we weren't impressed. The crab roll smelled fishy, the tuna was bland and nothing was cold, which kind of worried me. This place is on the way home from work, but I will just continue to take a few extra minutes for what I believe to be the best and freshest sushi in Columbus at Sogo.

Sadly, I had to lower my rating of my favorite weekend hangout, Mikado sushi bar. The sushi chef Ben, the cute waitress Rey, the server Denny, everyone left over a fight with management. We used to go in there and everyone knew us, the chef knew how I like my sushi and knew what to make my son and everyone treated my little boy like a celebrity. That was a big deal to my son. He loved going in there. Now the only one left who knows us is Ellen the bartender. And while that's okay, every place has staff changes, the new staff have ruined everything. We went in for our usual visit and the new waiter sat us down, got us our drinks and never came back. He forgot we were over there in the sushi bar. The sushi chef just ignored us. He was too busy to notice that two people had come in and not been given a menu or any food. I finally had to go and ask Ellen to get someone to wait on us and she ended up doing it herself. Then the sushi chef didn't quite get the order right, didn't quite understand Ellen's instructions, charged us for things Ben didn't, didn't make my son's sushi the way he likes it; it just wasn't a good experience. The food was still delicious and the ambiance is nice, but the experience just wasn't the same. I think I'm going to try the other sushi bar in town. This is what happens when you have employees who get it, but managers who don't.

How do you rate a restaurant when you didn't eat any of their food? Quite the conundrum, but I'll give it a shot. I'm not big into steakhouses/hibachi style restaurants, but my friends wanted to try this place since it was close by. I generally think of the food as average and the restaurants as gimicky, but what they hell, even a blind squirrel finds a nut. So we show up and no one greets us, no one says "we'll be right with you", so I'm almost about to wander aimlessly in the dining area like a lost puppy when someone notices us and asks if we'd like to eat at a normal table or at a hibachi grill. I ask for the grill and so they go off and get a grill ready. But they don't tell us that they are doing this, they just leave us hanging trying to guess what their doing, like it's restaurant charades or something. 5 minutes go by and they come back to seat us. 2 other groups are seated at the same hibachi with us. So there's roughly a dozen patrons at this 1 hibachi. We are seated, looked at the menu, decided what we want to eat, and then we wait, and we wait some more, and we wait some more while my friend's kid is going bonkers wondering when are we getting food. Forget food, we didn't even get water. No one at the hibachi had water. No one representing the restaurant in any capacity came to take our orders or give us water. So we're about 15 minutes into our fasting when I decide to go up to the front desk and ask what's going on. Well the staff member frustratingly tells me that they had 3 people quit. So they have 2 servers for a room with roughly 8 hibachis and the manager is working the bar. I feel for them, I really do as I've worked in the restaurant industry, but they didn't have to seat us. They could of let us know there was a wait and that they were short staffed. So the staff member I talked to said he would get someone over to our hibachi. 5 more minutes go by and nothing, no server, no water, no acknowledgement that we exist. So we gave up, we packed up our things (we had 2 hungry kids below the ages of 3 with us) and head over to IHOP. And this wasn't just our hibachi, the neighboring hibachi looked like they were about to lose some diners as well. Sadly, this isn't the first time I've experienced nonexistent service at a hibachi themed restaurant. Farewell hibachi restaurants, I'm done with you!

Being semi new to the area my wife and I wanted to try a Japanese Steakhouse. We have had the chance to try a few in Toledo, Ohio and while we didn't mind them there were a few things we weren't fans of (the soups, salad dressing being super gingery and cloying, jammed around a small table.) We weren't sure that this restaurant next to the Starplex would be any better. We were wrong! Mikado is the best Japanese Steakhouse I have been too. As soon as we walked in we were greeted by two employees. We were quickly seated and drink orders taken. After being given plenty of time to look over menus we ordered. The soup and salad were very good. We were extremely surprised with the salad dressing. It was creamy, and had a good tang to it, without being cloying. The tempura veggies were very good and the shrimp tempura roll my wife ordered was tasty as well. When the hibachi chefs came he was super friendly and funny as well. Even with a full table he cooked the food to order, and quickly. The sauces served on the side were also amazing. All in all it was a great experience and I am looking forward to visiting quite a bit more!

Mikado recently opened and I have been anxious to check it out since we live in the area. It is located in a shopping center, next to the Starplex movie theater and across from the Walmart. Our group of 4 went here on a rainy Sunday afternoon and had a great time. We came in with various experiences with hibachi style restaurants, but we all had a really excellent time here at Mikado and will definitely be coming back. We were greeted and asked if we wanted to sit in the sushi bar area, or in the hibachi area. We were ready for a full meal, and found a nice and clean table with the grill in the center. We quickly placed drink orders and browsed the menu. There were several appetizer options and also a variety of sushi options as well. We were anxious for the hibachi, so we placed orders for shrimp, chicken, filet, and scallop combos. Our table-side chef was quick to come out and greet us, and he was fun to watch and chat with as he created onion volcanoes, juggled eggs, and a few other jokes and tricks. Everyone in our group enjoyed the meals, and the portions were big enough for a to-go box for tomorrow's lunch. Great food, a fun atmosphere, and friendly service made this a great group dinner! I'm definitely interested in coming back to try the bar area and sample the sushi menu.

First and foremost not sure why all the bad reviews. I have been to most Japanese steakhouses in Columbus and this is 1 of the better places. However I have not had the sushi or anything outside of the Hibachi. Steak the fried rice the chicken and the yum yum sauce is very good. The cooks are mediocre with the exception of Louise.
(4)Brian K.
I love Japanese Steakhouses and I have been to most of them in the Greater Columbus area. This one is the closest to my home so I had to go, so on a Sunday afternoon my wife and I went for lunch. We were the second table seated. We ordered, I got steak and shrimp with fried rice, it came with vegetables and a salad. The salad dressing tasted like a watered down Yum Yum Sauce. The steak and shrimp had no seasons (well it did, it had soy sauce, salt and pepper) but tasted bland. The fried rice , again, salt, pepper and soy but also sesame seeds was ok, but grossly under seasoned the vegetables on the other hand were really good. The chef was entertaining, the server was great, but the reason we go is for the food, and the food was not good enough to get a second trip.
(2)Alyse A.
I get the shrimp and Scallops lunch combo! Louie cooks the entire meal to perfection!!!!! These are hands down the biggest shrimp I've ever had in a Hibachi restaurant. I am always impressed w the service and food. This is my third time and I will keep coming back!!!!

Very Nice!!

I've had every Japanese Steakhouse in Columbus. this is BY FAR the worst. If you want good Japanese Steakhouse on the west side, go to House of Japan Near Tuttle. This place is a joke. Tiny portions, little to no entertainment, and rude servers. I went twice to make sure the first time wasn't a fluke. It was worse the second time. I'll never go back. They even overcharged my credit card. They added the tip twice, then refused to make it up to me. I can't comment on the sushi, but the steakhouse is horrible. Wish they would hurry up and go out of business so something good could move in.
(1)Jasmin V.
We randomly walked into this joint. And guess what?.. I'm a fan! The sushi was good and everything came out quick and fresh. The staff was attentive. More importantly you get a little discount for being a yelper! I mean that's would keep me coming! Enjoy!
(4)Ben P.
Wow! Ben at the sushi bar was beyond helpful. I learned a lot from him the other staff. By no means is my goal to become pretentious but just become educated enough to understand the story told to me through food. The prices are unbeatable, staff is responsive and interactive, and the atmosphere is beyond clean. I'm plan on becoming a regular.
