We stopped here on our trip through OH - I had the baked chicken, sweet plantains; my husband had fried goat and green plantains. We both had black rice. Everything was great; rice was the highlight. Great service, good food.

I don't think this place is open....just stopped by and closed. Super bummer. Was really hoping to try the food as the pictures look great but super disappointed. Oh well, Val's Caribbean food got my business that evening!

I've had my eye on this place for awhile. It's a little out of my way but sounded interesting, so I made sure to swing by. The hours are a little odd too, so check before you go- they're not open for lunch early in the week. It's not a fancy place- pretty basic booths and tables, a little dance floor. Clean, but sparse. Comfy though. Service was very friendly, and efficient, but not intrusive (my favorite combination.) And the food: amazing. Never had Haitian food before, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I've liked goat and lamb for as long as I can remember, and have had it in Jamaican food, Middle Eastern, etc. So I had to try it here. I got the fried goat, which comes sprinkled with onions and with sides of slaw and rice. I chose the black rice- colored, and mildly flavored, with mushrooms. Tender and tasty. Comes with a bowl of sauce, which reminded me of a sort of curry stew with potatoes and carrots. Not that there's curry in it, that's just what it reminds me of. It's fine, and goes okay with the rice, but that was good enough on its own. The goat was meaty little chunks, subtly flavored, with a few bones. I ordered medium spice since you never know just how hot hot will be, and for me, medium was mild. The slaw, though? Spicy. Like, one bite and take a little break spicy. Never had spicy slaw. It was darn good though. I added fried green plantains because I love them, and these were perfect. Crispy outside, slightly sweet inside. Would make a nice snack. Again, nothing fancy, just great food. I'll be back. It seems a little less out of my way now that I know it's good...

Is this place even open still? My friend and I went when it says it was suppose to be open but it was locked and you couldn't even see inside. The open sign was up but not on. We even tried calling and the number was disconnected. I wrote to them on Facebook asking what was going on but no one ever responded and this was a week ago....please let us know so we can fix it if it is officially closed.

I'm pretty unfamiliar with Haitian food in general. but I have to say that I had a pretty good experience here. I had the fried pork, plantains, and a beef patty. Overall, I thought everything was pretty good. Though I felt like something was missing in the spicy sauce addition that was available for the pork. I didn't think it was especially spicy, and it didn't really seem to mesh with the pork in my opinion. That being said, the portions were generous and the food was quite affordable. Plus, our waitress was super nice and accommodating. I look forward to returning and trying some of the other items on the menu.

I loved the food and the experience. I look forward to going back. This place is easy to miss, it sits back off of 161, you've got to watch out for it. I went on a bad weather day and was surprised to see this place open. I had the restaurant all to myself and the waitress and chef's full attention. They were very friendly and answered all of my food questions. I got the fried goat and sweet plantains - absolutely delicious! My daughter got the grilled chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy. Not your average gravy - also delicious. Unfortunately there is no children's menu. The food is definitely authentic Haitian cuisine and not americanised. Seasoned and cooked well. One thing though, the chef's version of mild and my version are totally different! I got a side of slaw that was so spicy -coughing/choking spicy, I was told it was a little hot. LOL Beware. They also give very large portions, we both needed to go boxes. The restaurant is truly spotless, the floor is so shiny clean it looks like you could slip and fall. Also there is a large open area in the middle of the restaurant, it looks like it's a dance floor. The decor is simple, a couple signs and pictures. The booths and tables are dated but very clean. Prices are okay, you will get your money's worth in the portion. Great food, spotless restaurant, and friendly, I'll definitely be back.

I visited this restaurant for the first time and I must say the Chef was very pleasant. I ordered the Red Snapper, Rice and Peas and Plantains. The seasoning used on the fish was a bit too salty. The flavor of the fish was definitely overpowered by the saltiness of the seasoning. I was very disappointed, but this will not deter me from returning. I always give a restaurant a second try based on three criteria: good food, great customer service, and cleanliness. This restaurant definitely had great customer service, and cleanliness, I did enjoy the rice and peas, plantains. No disrespect to the Chef, just tweek your seasonings just a bit so it wouldn't contain so much salt. The customer could always add salt to their food if needed. I will definitely be back.

I love love love Haitian & American Restaurant! But before I delve into my experience I should inform you that I've only had one entree from here so my review is completely biased. Order the Red Snapper, no if ands or buts about it. Whether you order it fried or baked Chef Jeans Red Snapper is bursting with aromatic spices and flavor. Served on the side is dirty rice and beans accompanied with plantains that are cooked to a crisp whether green or yellow. I could eat this dish everyday given the chance.

Went for lunch on a Saturday. I cannot say that this food was up to par. They were out of yellow rice and black rice. Ordered the pork and plantains...it was ok. On a monthly basis a group of my friends try different family owned small resturants and this one was definitely a miss not a hit amongst the 10 or so we have tried.

My cousin and I went last night for an early dinner...all I can say is WOW! I ordered the fried pork stew with black rice, it was delicious! My cousin had the goat stew with black rice also delicious! The staff was friendly and the atmosphere was really comfortable and clean! I am a customer for sure!

I was a Haitian food novice but after two visits I'm thoroughly enjoying working my way to aficionado because this place is really good. It's definitely casual but clean and staffed by very attentive, pleasant waitresses. The red snapper is a must. I went with the full order: spicy, stuffed with onions and bursting with flavor. Perfectly cooked. I pigged out, making a feast of my meal by having black rice, plantains, and the spicy slaw. All very good, but the plantains (sweet) were incredible as they were cooked to caramelized perfection. During the meal, the chef came out to greet our table and explain some aspects of Haitian cuisine. He's a great guy, passionate about his restaurant and the food he prepares. He explained that slaw is a common component of Haitian cuisine and they've got it in varying degrees of spiciness. It's got heat but it's not mouth burning hot, just a simple slaw bursting with flavor. That's the key word here... flavor, and this restaurant has it in abundance. Next trip was the fried pork with plantains, a side of black rice, and slaw. Excellent on all counts. Did I mention how good the plantains are? They also serve beer, both domestic and imports. Everything is reasonably priced and served without a long wait. This is a hidden gem on SR 161. I'll be going back again and again. Next time around is the goat stew, maybe some plantains. Did I mention how good they are?

In my eternal quest to find small family owned ethnic eateries, I discovered the Haitian and American Restaurant. The first thing that strikes upon entering the place the incredible cleanliness. The floors were so clean I felt like I could have eaten anything that I may have dropped on them. The owner greeted us warmly and attended to all our needs. I ordered the fry goat and my dinning guest had the fry beef. They were served with a spicy slaw and perfectly fried plantains. The meat was cooked to perfection. We shared an apple pie an pumpkin pie for dessert. The prices were more than fair. $12.00 for the entree and $2.00 for the pies. I hope my Yelp friends will support this small wonderful establishment.

My wife and got a Groupon we we're very satisfied with food here. The vegetables rice and awesome and maybe what we enjoyed the most. I tried the spicy pork stew. I won't lie, it is very spicy but I've had hotter. The broth is delicious as well as the vegetables cooked in the stew. Also the stew have fresh vegetables added, like sliced onion and green pepper. The protein, in this case pork, was tough, dry, and some of it was at the edge of burnt. My guess that either the chef over baked it or it was left over from the night before. My wife got the baked chicken with sauce and the baked mac 'n cheese. The mac was moist and flavorful but it had a strange sweet taste. Here chicken was good and bad. One piece was extremely dry and the other was moist and flavorful. The dry piece again was either over cooked or last night's. The relish seemed to be a sweet pickled cabbage with some sort of hot pepper. Good but the relish has a bite to it. The decor leaves much to be desire but very clean. All around the ceiling is dance lighting equipment which seems out of place. The restaurant looked like it use to be a bar before it was repurposed into the Haitian and American Restaurant. The wait staff are nice but I never got asked if I wanted a refill of my drink until I'm ready to leave. I saw more of the head chef then our waitress. My final thoughts are good food but don't go for lunch because the meats maybe from the day before.

Went here with friends as we'd never had Haitian food or even knew what it involved. The staff was incredibly friendly and very helpful as we tried to make selections. They seemed very excited that we weren't wimping out and ordering from the "American" section and gave recommendations. They even gave my fiance a pretty generous serving of a completely different menu item in addition to what he ordered just so he could try it. Food was good. The American menu looked interesting too, though maybe not quite as American as they think - I don't see many soups with leeks or lentils in U.S cooking! Curious about the rest of the menu, especially because I didn't get a chance to try their mac and cheese (which they "do a little differently"). Definitely go here, they are great people, but we were the only people there. :( I worry they're not getting the business they deserve. (They don't have a website, unfortunately - pardon my snark in the URL Yelp FORCED me to input.)

My first experience with Haitian food and it was great. Owners made sure everything was to our liking, and made suggestions on what to try next time. I had the goat stew with rice & beans and a side order of fried plantains. Great flavors, I can't wait to try their tilapia or red snapper. The owner/chef also suggested the legume dish. Clean restaurant and faster than expected service.

My wife and i found out this place through groupon and i never had Haitian food before and wow the food is so awesome. The chef is really passionate about his food. Only disappointment i have is the place is very overlooked. Go there, its worth your time!

We went there and had a very nice meal. The ambiance is pretty casual, as is the food. We ate pork stew with beans/rice as well as fry beef with black rice (made black by dried mushrooms). Also fried plantains with a spicy slaw. The food all had rich flavor. The service was very cheerful, fairly quick, and very inviting. We'll definitely go back for more.

It is really good for a Haitian restaurant, the staff was really nice and friendly. Their griot (fried pork) and fried plantains was really good, great seasoning. I will going back to try other food.

This is a gem of a restaurant. I had the chicken sauce with rice and beans and it was authentic and really great. I wasn't sure at first About the area but it was very clean and the owner and his wife personally waited on us. Great place. A must to experience. Definitely get the cup of creamas. Yum!

I talked to the chef, who is from Haiti but was trained at the Culinary Institute of America, which may be why the flavors in the food are so complex and tasty. As my husband said, it makes you a lover of goat (a lean meat that can be tough but not here). I got takeout, so I could enjoy the goat stew with a fairly complex cabernet sauvignon, but any nice, medium red wine would be excellent. Similarly the black rice (cooked with mushroom juice) is a taste adventure, and the homemade hot sauce--garlic, vinegar and habanero peppers- (I had it on the side) can add a complex hot note. Many of the fruit juices are homemade, and the restaurant now has a liquor license, so you can enjoy a Caribbean beer or rum before or with the meal. The small shopping center is somewhat off the beaten track, but easy to get into and out of--off Sharon Woods Blvd north of 161. The prices are incredibly low for the quantity/quality of the food. Do your taste buds a favor and try this restaurant.
