From the outside this Chinese sit down on Cleveland just north of Morse looks like it is on Cleveland just north of Morse. You think it is a shady looking joint in a shady location, one among the parasitic check cashiers and loan sharks, the dilapidated carry-outs and weedy skin flick peddlers, the street hustlers and chop shop fronts. But on the inside it is a clean, well ran Americanized Asian restaurant with a helpful staff. I came here on an unofficial Yelp event organized by Mike G to honer Mark K's winning Yelp. ( one grand in reviews is impressive.) The staff treated us well and gave exemplarily service. Phoenix has your usual Oriental decor and a lot of space. At front is a small well maintain bar good for single seating. They also have another chamber that was dark on my visit, it look like it might be for private parties. What really makes the place is its affordability. The prices are comparable to fast food places like Panda Express, but the food here is much better than that. I ordered orange chicken on fried rice with a egg roll app. The egg role was good, hot through out and loaded with ingredients. The orange chicken was in the americanized style. They served me all white nuggets that were of quality. The sauce was good, though the spices were uneven. My first bites seem to lack the slight spiciness of the sauce. But latter bits it was there. The fried rice was good. The bill with soda came to $8.99--better and cheaper than fast food microwave warm ups. So I'd rate this place lower than more authentic and upscale Chinesse places. For the price though, it beats most places. So if your in the area and need a hot dinner for a great price, come here.

I was skeptical about attending my very first Yelp Elite event here. Now for the backstory. In 1999 I took a blind date here for Valentines Day. Today she is my wife. This was our Anniversary spot until 2002 when your worst food fear comes true. The staff/management reaction sealed it. We would never return. 13 years later, I'm back. I ordered the lunch portion General Tsao, to give a fare comparison to others. The included vegetable egg roll was good and crispy. Not over-fried. Same comment as others, that the duck and mustard sauce on the table were very good. I have nothing good to say about the fried rice. Picture an ice cream scoop of Rice A Roni. Brown coloring without the sodium from all the soy it must have taken. No egg, bean sprouts, onions, or other vegetables. Bland and slightly approaching the pasty taste. The entree was better than those with menu pictures hanging on the wall. The broccoli(standard) was not included. It had about 6-8 pieces of green onion on top for color. It was not tough, over fried chicken. The sauce was pretty good, but not make my eyes water-nose run, considering I said very hot. The decor was ok. Same as 13 years ago. The bathroom will always show you the effort owners put into their business. The portion for price earned it an extra star. If I desire discount chinese food in the future. I will probably choose somewhere closer. A lot of the customers were doing carryout. Maybe that's what's best.

I'll admit I didn't even know this was here till a few weeks ago. Mike G. organized a get-together to celebrate my 1000th review, and we had a good group of Yelpers for a nice lunch here. It's an old-school Chinese-American place. Decor is typical; the place is larger than it looks and pretty nice inside. Service was great- they gave us a big table and lots of attention. Sweetie and I pretty much had our usual: shared crab Rangoon, she got lo mein, I got Mongolian beef. I should have asked for the dinner menu since it looks like they have more interesting options, but, no biggie, those are my typical items for the first time at a Chinese place, for comparison. The Rangoons were pretty darn good and it was a big order for the price. They were big and crabby, and a solid start to the meal. The sauce with them was okay, but the orange duck sauce on the table was great as an accompaniment. I also had an egg roll; I thought we had ordered two, but only one showed up and Sweetie didn't want it... It was pretty good, not amazing. I tried a bite of her lo mein (and will probably finish it off in the next couple of days.) She liked it. My Mongolian beef was a classic prep: tender beef, lots of scallions, on top of crispy rice noodles. Nice soy flavor to the sauce without being salty. I could have eaten more; the lunch portion was just enough, no leftovers. The fried rice I chose with it was fair; a nice counterpoint, but not very interesting on its own. We had a great time with old and new friends, and appreciated the good service. The price? I have no idea. Mike G. swiped the bill before I had a chance. He even beat Sweetie to it, which earned him The Look and a future pummeling.

This time I tried something different since their general tso did not wow me...had satay beef with onion and scallions and wonton soup. Very impressed with their wonton soup and now realize why people like it so much. The sauce on the beef was flavorful and the meat was cooked great. Not too tough and not too tender.

I was really amazed at the expansive dining area. From the outside, it doesn't appear how this restaurant could have so much eating space. Yet, it was not crammed together at all, there was lots of room between tables and eating areas. We also enjoyed viewing the beautiful carved statues that had been carved from wood. What a wonderful feel for the total ambiance of the whole restaurant. We had asked to have a special long table set up for our small group, for which we only had to wait a brief few minutes for some other members of our group to show up and then we were seated. Each of us were welcomed upon our arrival and shown to our table, which was covered in clean white paper with a table cloth underneath, silverware was rolled in linen at each setting, complete with several glass pitchers of ice-filled water. Linda, our server was very polite as she quickly took our drink orders, filled those and then returned to take orders for our meals. She was very adept in the performance of her duties and displayed her expertise and professionalism in her treatment of each of her customers. The restaurant was so relaxing so that we all felt comfortable to laugh and joke without disturbing other guests. My wife ordered an iced tea for her drink and I ordered a Mai Tai. Her Iced tea seemed to have a fruity flavor yet unsweetened allowing her to sweeten it as she preferred. My Mai Tai was very good. I thought it was a little on the sweet side, but very nice as the pronounced taste of the dark rum and curacao came through the strongest. As our appetizers were served; Won Ton Soup and Hot and Sour Soup for me. Her Won Ton Soup was filled with lots of dumplings, but a lighter chicken flavor than she is used to having. Wheras, my Hot and Sour Soupwas very good, but not as spicy as I'd been led to belive about this soup. The entre's served were War Su Gai for my wife and Hot Spicy Shrimp for me. My wife told me that her War Sue Gai moist and flavorful. She would like to have had more gravy, but didn't think to ask for it. However, my Hot Spicy Shrimp was delicious. It included large pieces of shrimp with crisp Chinese vegetables, is a brown gravy along side of my steamed rice that was cooked to perfection. The biggest surprise of all was the cost for the meal. It had to be at least 1/2 the price of comparable places. There are several Chinese restaurants that we love in Columbus and now this is another. We will definately be back.

Great Chinese food. I have been here a few times with the fam, and every time their food tastes fresh (sometimes that is hard to come by when getting Chinese food). The sauce seems to be not as heavy as a lot of other Chinese places I have eaten. All around, the quality is just better than it's competition (even the 5 star Chinese restaurants that I have eaten at).

My all-time favorite restaurant! I started going here in the eighties. Moved out of state 25 years ago and stop here first anytime I visit family. Lunch prices have not changed for the past 30 years. Great serving sizes. Lunch includes egg roll and soup. General tso's chicken is the best!!! All of the dishes are delicious.

Don't let the outside appearance fool you guys. It does look kinda sketchy from the outside but the inside is really pretty nice. It's neat, clean and the booths are pretty comfy too. The employees are always very welcoming to everyone who comes in. Let's talk about the food here. It's traditional Chinese American so whether you like War Sue Gai, General Tso's, Mongolian Beef, Mu Shu Pork or maybe you like Cashew Chicken, you'll find the food here is consistently good. I know, I've had them all. By the way, have you ever noticed those little chili symbols on Chinese menus? That means that it's supposed to be a hot and spicy dish. Most places tend to ignore this and make their food mild. Are you with me on this? Fortunately that's not the case here. On this particular visit, I ordered the Kung Pao with shrimp and it came out hot and spicy, just like it's supposed to be. Kudos to them for not dumbing down their dishes. Other reviewers have mentioned Karolla in their reviews and I will too. She's a really nice German lady that's been working there forever. She knows the menu and she's not afraid to make recommendations to you if need be. I hope you get her for your server. This restaurant has survived the intensely competitive Columbus restaurant scene since 1973. That should tell you something right there. 4 Stars and definitely worth checking out for some classic Chinese American food.

First time visit to this establishment and u was pleasantly surprised. I've been driving by this place for years and kept saying I needed to try it. Well Mike G. puts on a UYE to celebrate Mark K.s 1000 review and yup a great reason to dine in. A shout out to both of those gentlemen btw. I ordered the won ton soup and omg it was so good. It's one of my new faves. For entrees I got the Empress chicken with fried rice and hubby got the combo Pad Thai. I really liked the sweet spicy sour of my chicken and the Chinese veggies not so crazy over the fried rice. Tom a fellow diner nailed it when he said it reminded him of rice a roni. My husband enjoyed his entree also and announced that we would be coming here more in the future to try more dishes and dinner. The inside decor is well worn and you can tell the place has been around awhile. Our server was very friendly and efficient. I'd give a half star if I could but I'm not allowed as I just can't rate it as high as my beloved Chinese place but we will be back.

This is another one of those places I've driven by a billion times and was not impressed with the outside appearance and kept going. What regret I have! Not only was I surprised by the size of the restaurant but the food was good too! I'll admit I did not have high expectations after entering, it was basically empty on a Saturday afternoon and my waitress was not asian. Nothing wrong with this, but just surprising. I anticipated the food was going to be totally Americanized Chinese food. I was pleasantly surprised again, the food was very good. My Chinese vegetable soup was delicious, along with my shrimp with lobster sauce. My daughter's combination lo mien was also very tasty. The only reason I don't give this higher than three stars is because I thought the portion of fried rice was small. I'll definitely be returning and hopefully learn to quit judging a book by its cover!

Last time I was here was at least 25 years ago. Boyfriend and I shared Combo Pad Thai and potstickers. Both had won ton soup and he had spring roll. The Pad Thai was spicy but very good. The beef, chicken, and shrimp were cooked perfectly. The soup was wonderful and reminded me of Hoy Toy's in Downtown Cols when I was a kid. Potstickers were browned nicely and the soy dipping sauce made them very tasty. I tasted their duck sauce and it was fantastic. The environment was very nice. I would of preferred no tv's in the dining area. Waitress was very nice and very attentive to our table. They get my vote for favorite Pad Thai and won ton soup in Central Ohio. Can't wait to go back!

I have been eating here for 20 years and it never gets old. I love their menu. I have tried many different dishes. On Friday night's it is really busy. Usually due to the fact that they make a strong cocktail, and a lot of people "pre-party" here. They do have good lunch prices.

Very interesting menu. They call mee fun a pad thai. Why? All the dishes i ordered had same thick strong soy sauce flavor. Way too salty and full of MSG! My tongue is numb after few bites. The orange chicken meat was pre cooked so it had an after taste. The shrimp was so fishy I thought I ordered a seafood dish but it was just combo meat noodle with shrimp, chicken and beef. It was pretty awful comparing with Los Angeles Chinese food selections.

Possibly the worst Chinese food I eaten in a decade maybe two decades. There is nothing positive I can say. The Chinese that came from the grocery store in two cans, one little one big fasten together when I was a youth is better. Maybe Food TV's Restaurant Impossible could help or a wrecking ball!

Absolute best Asian food for 20 years. The service and people are great too. They have the absolute best egg rolls and won ton soup. Their fried rice is awesome and they do special requests with no questions....

One of the classic places for Chinese in Columbus. I know that the decor is something that could be improved, but I must tell you their service and food is one of the best Chinese in Columbus. I'd say it's up there with Little Dragon. I highly recommend their cashew chicken, shrimp spring roll, vegetable egg roll, and/or chicken fried rice. They give you a ton of food, and it's quality. food. I like that in a restaurant where you can get big quantity of quality food for a decent price. A bit of a warning: their dinners are very big portions. If you're not a big eater, it could serve for two. If you get their dinner combo, you are in for a big surprise! It's a LOT of food. They have 3 or 4 courses. I never get it after the first time because it's just so much food (SO GOOD, but so much. Too much for me). They have a full bar, and also do carry out. I have gotten their carry out a few times and haven't had any problems. I would recommend them to everyone in Columbus. It's an old standby, and a local restaurant that puts a lot of pride in their food.

Stumbled across this place and I was very impressed. The food is delicious and the server was friendly. Shanghai rice noodles and crab wontons was what I ordered and I enjoyed it very much.

    Best egg rolls in town!

This is a very nice looking restaurant. And it's large to boot. Unfortunately, the food looks great but was very dried out which is the reason they only got three stars. What else is interesting, is that they had an older occidental lady as the only waitress on duty. Nothing wrong with that but it surprised me.

This is an old stand by. The food here is well made. Portions are large. The decor is old, but clean. The staff is a bit off and stuffy, but attentive. The won ton soup is like crack. I typically get a quart to go when I eat here. Not really the most fun place to hang out, but the food is well worth having to be on Cleveland Ave.

Im very picky about Chinese food but my husband's co-workers had highly recommended this place so we tried it tonight. I don't even usually like egg rolls but I liked these. Good Sesame chicken, good fried rice. Bad area of town, but good food--get it to go!

Love the hot and sour soup. Place is always clean, no one ever gave us any problems and the mixed drink prices are reasonable and taste good. Portions are huge with a great flavor. Always enough to bring something home. We used to hit this place up all the time for lunch when we worked in Easton. However, according to cbus health dept they have a bad habit of serving dog. So... yeah.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
