Being a recent transplant to the Cincinnati area, my husband and I were quickly in search of an Indian restaurant to match up with our favorites back home. We tried a couple of places, one was good and the other was...meh. Then we stumbled upon this place, and we are SET for Indian food. The place is simple inside, and it seems clear that they do more of a takeout business than dining-in, but we prefer to actually sit and eat in a place. The dining room is spacious, and the service is great -- everyone is friendly and receptive without being annoying. We've been here two times, and the second time was our anniversary. Unknown to me, my husband called ahead to tell them it was our anniversary. They really made it special -- giving us a corner booth, and decorating the table with a flower and candle, with wineglasses waiting for us. It was so special and I was so, so charmed. As far the food, I love it. Appetizers -- We've ordered the vegetable samosas and the mixed sampler (which I'm sure is actually called something else, but I don't have the menu in front of me). The samosas come two to an order, and are huge. They're stuffed with well seasoned potatoes and a few peas, and are fried without being greasy. The mixed sampler comes with a samosa, several vegetable fritters, fried paneer, chicken, and a few other goodies. It's a lot of food for a low price. Dinners -- We've ordered the chicken tikka, chicken tikka saag, chicken tikka masala (there might be a theme here). I usually order vegetarian meals at Indian places, but both times we were here, I wasn't feeling the meatless meals. Of the three dishes we've tried, I'd have to give the most caution about the chicken tikka -- the meat is marinated beautifully and it's very tender. However, it is covered in a slightly sweet/tomatoey sauce that I've never encountered in chicken tikka. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't at all what we were expecting. The chicken tikka saag and tikka masala are both excellent -- I'm picky about saag dishes, as I find them to be too creamy and flavorless a lot of the time, but this was well-seasoned and not overly creamy. We love garlic naan, and it's great here -- very garlicky, so, you know, avoid it on a first date, but for old marrieds like us? Bring on the garlic naan! The prices are very reasonable -- cheaper than what we're used to, and both times, we've had more than enough for two meals. Highly recommend this place!

I love this place! Not only is the food amazing, but the staff is so friendly and will treat you like a king. The best is the ginger chicken. The food is always fresh and the nan is always piping hot from the tandori. Service is always fast as well. Get a mango lassi as well!

Royal Taj is one of the only Indian restaurants on the far east side of Cincinnati. I really enjoy going to this location because it is more convenient that driving all the way to Clifton and the food is very good! The service here has always been excellent. The waiters are very attentive and very helpful. Your water shall never be empty. The inside of the restaurant isn't stunningly beautiful, but it's nice. The walls are decorated with some beautiful art. My favorite is portrait of an old Sheikh man that is very interesting. My mother gets the shrimp biryani every time she comes here. I prefer their chicken tikka saag dish which is excellent! Don't forget to order a mango lassi to complete your meal! I want to add that I am slightly confused by their website as it states that they are a Thai restaurant when they clearly aren't.

I was excited to try a new place for chicken curry in Cincinnati for myself and my two kids. Unfortunately, the chicken curry was not nearly as good as what I've enjoyed from Krishna, Taj Indian and Deep India. Hate to say it, but it was almost like eating spicy tomato and rice soup with chicken thrown in. The rice was more oriental in terms of being very moist and puffy than what I've come to expect at other Indian restaurants. What Royal Taj serves may be more authentic - I honestly don't know - but I won't be going back there for chicken curry anyway.

I think TJ hit the nail on the head: "consistently good but not mind blowing Indian food" The service is fantastic there, they are very attentive and accommodating. My brother and I came here for a lunch buffet one afternoon. Most of their dishes were quite delicious. Their samosas are pretty good, too. I just didn't like their naan very much. It had no fragrance or and the texture was more bread-like than naan-like. But I will definitely be returning to this place!!

Samplers are good. No music. A bit lacking in verve on a Friday night. Slow service on a very slow night. Probably best to get it to go.

Very dirty walls and table cloths. Service was also very slow as they tended to ALL to go and call in orders before any of the 3 tables they had in the restaurant. Ordered as we entered after getting our own menus and then waited over an hour for food. The food was a 3 star but the service and cleanliness pushed it to a 1. We will search out some of the excellent Indian food in Clifton.

Not as good as the other Indian places around Anderson, in both quality and price. Good service, decent taste, 3rd best option in the neighborhood.

We had a large group and they brought out half of the food and had to make the rest while we waited. Then when the check came out he acted like he was confused and didn't want to split it up. Terrible service and awful Indian food. I only got a level 3 and it tasted like they poured a bottle of hot sauce in it. If u want a better experience with better food, go to Indian Bistro or Baba India.

We went during lunch for their lunch buffet was very subpar. The food was decent if you're looking for authentic Indian - but 1/3rd of the buffet foods were missing and not refilled in a timely manner throughout our visit. More than likely will not come back

The candle dish was the best part of the meal. The Saag was dark brown and over seasoned. The curry was a strange tang and the veggies didn't taste right. The rice is decent but that's just your filler. The price is 10-15 as usual and the lunch buffet is $6.99 but I won't be back to be fooled by the enticing price, make the trip to Clifton! I'm sure people stay in the Anderson bubble instead of getting their money worth at a real Indian cuisine restaurant.

Saag was tomato-based, samosa was mustardy and jalfrezi was weird. We are seasoned Indian food lovers and this place missed the mark for us.

It hits the spot like no other on the Eastside. If you've never eaten Indian food, try a samosa (meat or vegetarian) , the chicken tiki marsala, some garlic naan and say welcome to flavor town. The a Royal Sampler is a great way to introduce yourself to various flavors if you are ready to go the next step.

Service/food were fantastic! Went with a group of friends and they were slammed w carry out orders and patrons. Although it took a min to get our good, the waiter and waitress were so sweet and attentive. I got the mixed veggies, while my friends had the chicken curry. The food was delicious. Definitely will come back.

I know that Clifton is the mecca of Indian food, but this place in Anderson gives them a run for their money. I only got carry out on a cold snowy night. I ordered my chicken tikka masala at a 3. It was perfect for me. When I picked up my order, the owner was so nice! I was a happy girl!

The food is not as good as it used to be; and the bathroom could be a little cleaner. The owner or owner's son could use an attitude adjustment; very rude. Although, all of the employees seem nice. We frequented them for several years until last year.

Right off the bat, I'll admit that four stars is a bit of a stretch for Royal Taj. But let me explain: Anderson Township is pretty much a restaurant wasteland, and, if you're hungry, Beechmont can feel like a depressing and endless trail of chain monotony and mediocrity. This is a community that recently lost what was probably the best Middle Eastern restaurant in the whole Cinci area, Cafe Mediterranean, apparently because the A.T. crowd couldn't pry themselves away from the chains. If you're looking for anything independent and just slightly off the beaten culinary track, you're going to feel like screaming in frustration after surveying your A.T. options. Royal Taj is one of the few bright spots, which is why I give it a little extra boost. Royal Taj is one of the few Indian places outside of Ludlow's Indian row that isn't operated by the Ambar/Baba folks. This means that the buffet has some change-ups from what you might get at those places: veggie somosas, goat curry, pappadam, etc. The food is quite good but I wouldn't call it wonderful. (I rate Hyde Park Plaza's Shaan four stars also, but if Shaan is a strong-four-approaching-five, Royal Taj might be slight cut above a three-and-a-half; call this another lament about the absence of half-star ratings on Yelp.) The decor is pretty forgettable and maybe bordering on shabby. And you might hit your head on the low-hanging modern-ish light fixtures if you're not careful. The service is entirely competent but doesn't really stand out. Royal Taj now has Indian-restaurant competition down Beechmont with the recent opening of Indian Bistro. Time will tell if both can survive out here....

I have always wanted to try this hidden gem and today I got my chance. Royal Taj is an unassuming restaurant tucked in a plaza next to Panera on Beechmont Avenue. I decided to try the lunch buffet on this Sunday afternoon. While it is a smaller buffet than I've seen at some of the other Indian restaurants, there was still a good selection. The buffet on this day had more chicken dishes (chicken curry, chicken masala, chicken tikka, chicken vindaloo, chicken wings,.) than vegetarian options. There was one soup on the buffet, a tomato soup which had a good flavor but was cold. Some of my favorites: saag paneer, samosas, and naan were all excellent. The service was also very attentive-will definitely be back!

every meal is excellent. I usually have the dishes with spinach in them and something else. Naan bread is EXCELLENT.

Royal Taj is one of the best Indian restaurants in Cincinnati. The food is delicious. You have to try their chicken wings (served on buffet), Special chicken tikka masala and the vindaloo... We go there at least once a week.

Best Feature: Amazing food! Great buffet selection and entrees. Worst Feature: ----- I grew up on the east side of town and I am so glad this restaurant is around to add some great variety to the area! I love eating here as the food is fantastic, the lunch buffet is a good price (and those in the area can snag some local coupons as well from time to time!), and the staff is very friendly! I've been here many times, usually for a lunch meeting with a friend but also dragged some family in for dinner a few times. I like the lunch buffet because they have these smaller dishes with spiced somethings (don't know what it is but it adds a lot of heat) and fantastic naan. Their chicken makhani is fantastic and one of my top favorites. I also am a glutton for their garlic nan - so good. I also love their spiciness - they can customize it for you, but they also do a great job making spicy truly something to enjoy. I love my dishes spiced and with a good heat to it, so I appreciate it when I get a well-flavored and spiced dish. The staff is also very nice. I also get a very warm welcome and though I didn't order carry out often, they started remembering me after just a few times of calling in for lunch. The place is clean and well-kept and welcome break from all the chain restaurants that surround it. They always keep my drink glass refilled and ask to be sure I'm having a good time there. I happily will give them all my moneys for their great food + service, so if you're in the Anderson area and craving some good food, I highly recommend this Indian restaurant. I hope they stay right where they are - it's such a great food option for the area and keeps me coming back!

A couple of other Indian rest. have popped up in the area, but I'm still favor this one. Royal Taj's take on Chicken Tikka Masala is delicious!

I'm a big fan of the Ambar empire (Ambar, Akash, Baba, Guru, etc.), so I was curious what another Indian restaurant in Cincinnati would be like. My summary: mixed results. First, the good points: the naan was fresh, fluffy, and yummy and my water glass was never empty. Also, the chicken tikka masala was up there with the best I've had. And now the bad, the chicken tikka saag (usually my favorite) was quite disappointing. There was a pervasive burned taste in the dish and I had to hunt for the few, sparse pieces of chicken. Also, the spice levels weren't consistent because even though both dishes were ordered at a "2", the tikka masala was quite mild and the tikka saag had a pretty good kick. Lastly, the ambiance was less than inviting: mint-green walls and napkins, one or two undersized pieces of wall decor, and pendant lights that hung too low and obstructed my view of my dining companion. The lights over most of the tables flickered constantly throughout our meal, which was incredibly distracting (and somewhat headache inducing) until they finally were turned off or burned out, leaving the restaurant in an even gloomier dim state. In summary, it's back to the Ambar empire for me--not worth the drive from NKY. I did notice that they offered a lunch buffet for about $6-7 so maybe that's a better option if anyone else was thinking of giving it a chance.

Our favorite non-Clifton Indian place in the city. There are very few options for Indian on the east side of Cincinnati. These guys are an amazing little gem tucked away in Anderson. The decor and ambiance are about as generic as can be, but if you're just looking for some solid Indian food on that side of the city with a really friendly staff, then your search is finished. The Chicken Tikka Masala is outstanding, and I have also enjoyed the other 5 or 6 dishes I've tried for dinner. The lunch buffet was pretty vanilla, but I don't really do Indian buffets for lunch because of the inevitable food coma, so that didn't factor into my rating at all. Overall tremendous food.

I have ordered take out a number of times from the Royal Taj. Last night I actually went there and ate in person. As the other reviews have noted, the interior is pretty much like any other Indian Restaurant I have ever been to. I had the Lamb Vindaloo, which I ordered at level 3. I would have preferred a bit more spice, but te flavor was good. For some reason the times I have ordered the same dish at level 3 for take out, it was much spicier. Maybe a different chef was cooking. Also, I feel the take out portions are a bit larger than the in house portions, but I could be wrong. Our other favorite dish is the Chicken Tikki Masala. It has a really good flavor to it, and I like it at a level 4. Overall, I would certainly recomend trying this place.

Really good food! I'd get it to go though because the inside of the place is really nothing special. Delicious!
