Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

See my 6/17/15 1 star review. So came back to use the other half of our Groupon only to learn they no longer are accepting Groupons. They will discount your bill $5.00 instead. As of this week they are under new ownership. The chips were much better this outing and the guacamole was very good! Hopefully this place will get back some of what it lost over the last 12-18 months!

On a Mexican kick lately, we came here on a Groupon deal. We were excited by the reviews here at first, but then we saw some complaints from recent customers who claim that the quality had gone downhill since a change in ownership. Well, our experience was a bit different from what the other patrons described. Our food came hot and fast. Our tostones were delicious as well, though we wish that it came with more sauce. Perhaps they can drizzle some sauce on the tostones in addition to those on the side? My goat tacos were gamy and salty, but not overpowering the fresh vegetables. Her fish fajitas were made with tilapia. The fish was not overcooked. Fajita vegetables were not mushy. Neither of our food was overly greasy, which certainly eased our guilt factor. Finally, the churro was delicious and the cream on the side added a nice touch. But it would've been nice if they brought the churro later in the meal instead of shortly after we received our entrees, because it was no longer as crunchy by the time we got to the churro as a dessert.

We really didn't enjoy this. The meat was all very bland, mine was chopped into tiny squares and once I realized that they tasted like cat food I just couldn't get past the thought enough to force myself to actually chew it. So I didn't even eat my meal, and the waitress very skillfully knew not to ask us how everything was. The staff were slow and not knowledgeable. Our meals were boring and stand out in our memories as nothing more than well.... Bland cat food covered in raw onions and cilantro. Sorry, this one was a total miss for us.

Let me start by saying I never write reviews. I use Yelp every time I visit a new restaurant, but nothing has ever compelled me to take the time to write a review, good or bad. However my most recent experience at Maya's has provoked the deepest annoyance that I can't help voice my thoughts. I used to frequent Maya's once a week at lunch, minimum. It's conservative to say half my meals during week consist of Mexican food. They have consistently good food and are one of the more authentic places around town. However, their service is nothing short of pathetic. There is one server that does well. One! But I was always willing to look past the poor service, undesirable ambiance, and questionable cleanliness of Maya's because of the food, until now. My last visit, literally this will be my last, I walked up the the counter to pay and waited in line for about 10 minutes. The food comes out faster than the receipts. When I finally got to the counter I handed over my bill and credit card, my card was swiped and I proceeded to sign the receipt. Meanwhile, the man behind the counter mentioned the server had charged me less than he should have. I stated that the amount is written on my receipt, therefore that's what I should pay. He asked if I had a little cash to cover the difference, to which I replied 'no'. He explained the server was new and an awkward silence followed. I asked if he want to swipe my card again and he said 'yes'. The additional cost was $1.25!!! Any reasonable business owner would have either eaten the cost or would be made even by the server that made the mistake. However, after making a scene over a $1.25, Maya's has lost a regular patron, indefinitely. I'll be in the market for a new go-to Mexican joint that takes a little more pride in customer service.

One of our favorite restaurants in the area! My husband loves authentic tacos and this is the place to get them! I always get the camarones a la plancha - grilled shrimp - yum! Some of the best fish tacos I have ever heard and the carne asada is aways good. Also has great guacamole and cold beer! It's tucked in a strip mall but the food is delish and the service is always friendly and quick!

Visited Maya Taqueria on the recommendation of my parents and was very happy with the experience. It sits in a strip mall and might not appear like a good place to get a really tasty meal but it is. The service was good and we really enjoyed ourselves. We ordered the pozole and a combo meal that came with a gordito, sope, and an enchilada. Also drank a couple Negra Modelos since they just had the standard Mexican beer selection. I am a huge fan of pozole and if you are not familiar with it I recommend you try this delicious soup. The pozole here is a delicious meal sized soup filled with hominy corn and pork and colored a deep red from all the spices. It comes with a plate piled with lettuce, onion, dried red chili peppers, and a sliced lime for squeezing. They also serve a stack of large round crispy tortillas for crumbling into the soup. I mixed in the accompaniments and started eating and this soup was absolutely fantastic. This delicious soup is hearty and filling and comes in a large portion that is a full meal by itself or could be shared with two people as we did. I will definitely return to enjoy more pozole. The sope is a thick bready tortilla that we ordered topped with tongue and it was delicioius. The gordita is the same thick tortilla as the sope but sliced open and stuffed and we tried that with the tasty fried tripe. The enchilada came covered in salsa verde (not sure if there is a choice as to what sauce you get) but filled with chorizo it was very good. I really liked that they had the choice of sopes and gorditas along with the typical tacos and enchiladas because I really do enjoy that thicker breadier tortilla that they use for them. The combo also came with the typical beans and rice and that is standard at Mexican restaurants. While I have had better tripe at some restaurants it was still good here and I would eat it again. Otherwise, I don't know if their meats tasted better or worse than other Mexican restaurants in the Cincinnati area but they were all very good. Overall, I would definitely eat here again and was very happy to find this place with it's delicious pozole, sopes, and gorditas.

Two or three years ago this place was the best Taqueria in the city. Then somewhere along the line they decided to become a "restaurant" and started serving the same typical greasy, cheese and sour cream covered, fried, fake mexican, crap you get anywhere else. Somehow, their tacos got worse too. What used to be tasty tacos for a good price are now... bland. I mean the food isn't terrible, the prices are good, and the run-down dive of a spot at least has good service, but based on what it used to be? It's shameful.

I wish I could like this place. It's near our house, and as a lifelong Los Angeleno, I really miss good Mexican food. But Maya just failed: bad food, inept service and no atmosphere. If you like fluorescent lighting, mostly unadorned brown walls, and splashy brown tile-look vinyl flooring, you're going to love Maya. They had three TV's visible from my seat, but no murals, no Mexican music, no color, no fun! Drab decor under bright fluorescent lighting. Bleh. When we entered the restaurant, we weren't sure if we should wait to be seated or to seat ourselves, so we stood around for a few minutes and tried to catch someone's eye. No one greeted us, then or ever. Eventually we sat down, and then grabbed a passing waitress to ask for service, and that was how the service went from then on. Nobody noticed or asked if we needed anything. They were responsive only if we stopped them while they were walking by, and then our server was pleasant enough, if unobservant. They seemed to have no system for waiting on customers. This got annoying after a while. But all would've been forgiven and forgotten if the food had been good. We ordered guacamole (chopped style and tasted okay), a carne asada torta (only okay), shrimp quesadilla (not great), carne asada taco (pretty good), and enchiladas verdes. The green sauce tasted canned, and the cheese inside wasn't melted. Pretty poor excuse for an enchilada. Nothing was garnished and there was no attempt to present the food attractively. My enchiladas came with small portions of rice (tepid and tasteless) and beans (also tasteless), and a small portion of "salad" which was elderly and thinly shredded iceberg lettuce topped with two slices of tomato. We were sad. If you want to visit a Mexican restaurant with a similar menu where things are done right, try Taqueria Mercado in Fairfield. It's prettier and yummier, and the service is better.
(2)Lisa F.
I was in the area on business. Tried this place because I LOVE Mexican food. I was sadly disappointed. Chicken enchiladas were more of a folder taco with canned mole sauce, chips had a strange smell and taste although warm and the salsa was too hot for me. They also put chopped jalapeños on the salad and didn't prepare me. No bar to sit at. Just disappointing. This is not authentic Mexican that I'm used to.....in New Hampshire, let alone Arizona!
(2)Craig R.
Wow, what a great find!! I have seen this place next to LensCrafters for a while but never stopped in, now I'm sorry I didn't stop In sooner. Today I tried the fresh made guacamole, really good! Tried the shrimp tacos and then got adventurous and tried the tongue and tripe tacos, really good!! Next I come back I'm going to have a margarita and if those are good this place will have one me over as my new, Mexican restaurant of choice.
(5)Cincy H.
Granted, they have a pretty high turnover of wait staff so service is not always great, but I do really enjoy the food. Best torta I have found in the Cincinnati area.

As a disclaimer before you read on... My husband and I miss authentic street tacos from SoCal so every time we check out a Mexican food place we could care less about the ambience or if they have margheritas or not. So, we ordered steak tacos, a pork tamale, a chicken tamale, and an horchata! First, they have REALLY good tamales. The corn meal has such a good gritty texture and it rich and savory, but we thought that the pork one was much much better than the chicken one. Chicken tamales always seem to have a funky after-taste so I think we just don't like the flavor of steamed chicken and cornmeal. The tacos were actually pretty good! The steak meat had great flavor and good carmalization and the tortillas seemed fresh. Their tacos are NOT fancy like what you get at mazunte or bakersfield otr, they are simple street tacos - fresh warmed tortilla, cilantro & onion, meat, and a bit of that good juicy/oilyness, done! They brought us 3 bottles of different sauces so we were really excited but unfortunately all the sauces fell a little flat. They were all either way too spicy or not seasoned enough. We prefered dipping our tacos in the salsa that they give us with the complimentary chips. Now, for those who like horchata.... they have REALLY good horchata. Our guess is that it's not the kind from the machine but we'll have to ask the next time we visit. The biggest down side of this place is their prices. I wish their tacos were a bit more affordable, because then we would come here ALL the time - considering it's so close to our house.

Don't know what happened here. The last couple times I ate here I felt ill. My boyfriend was throwing up. Never again :(
(1)Jason G.
Without a doubt the freshest Mexican in town. Every time we eat there, the food has come out hot and fresh..good chips and salsa, too! We moved here from Oklahoma, where authentic Mexican is abundant. Unfortunately, Cincinnati doesn't have many places to brag about...Maya nails it and is continually improving their facilities. A must try!
(5)Cindy G.
Solid strip mall Mexican joint. The place was super clean and tidy. We were the only customers the entire time we were eating. We ordered the guac and some mexican beers to start.( -1 star for no margs!) What kind of Mexican joint place doesn't have margaritas? The guac was the highlight of the meal. It was super fresh and we could literally hear him making it across the counter. It had a little too many tomatoes in it for my taste, and since they are out of season they made it a little watery. But still, this was some of the freshest guac I've ever had. Unfortunately the chips were old and not very good and the salsa was very watery. We ordered four tacos to split: the steak, the chicken, the pork, and the chorizo. The steak was the most flavorful. The meat was chunky and marinated to perfection. Topped with cilantro and onions it was the perfect bite. The chorizo was crisp, juicy and grilled perfectly. As for the chicken and the pork...it seemed the meat had maybe been sitting for too long. Both were dry, and we didn't eat them. The service was super friendly and we had a cheap lunch at only $14 bucks for 4 tacos, a beer, and a large guac. Overall there were some highs and lows, but our visit was really inconsistent. Just A-OK for now.

super good and authentic.

This used to be THE BEST Mexican restaurant. New ownership has destroyed what was once a unique experience. The first time we went after new ownership we could tell the salsa was different in a watered down, filler added sort of way and that the carnitas were clearly prepared in a substandard, dry as a tumbleweed sort of way. Why mess with perfection? Today we sat for over an hour without having a chance to place an order. We got the attention of the server 3 desperate/separate times only to have her shrug her shoulders twice and on the third time offer up a gesture that suggested 'it is what it is'. A guy next to our booth mirrored these sentiments bc he told us he waited 45mins for 1 plate! He agreed that this place has gone down the gutter since new ownership. Long story short: you've lost our business.

We finally stopped in after passing it by for 10 years to appease our Mexican cravings. We arrived about 4PM and were greeted warmly by the owner. We were the only ones there, and fútbol was playing on the tv over the small bar. The place is at the end of a little strip and very small and intimate, having a few tables and 4 booths. A very friendly waitress (owner's daughter) recommended happy hour margaritas, which were muy delicioso! We immediately received complimentary chips and salsa, which was nice. She recommended guacamole as an appetizer. It was a bit of a let down as it wasn't very good and very over priced at $4.50. The ballarta ( talapia on a bed of rice and shrimp) more than made up for the guac because it was out of this world! It came with a small salad and bean soup, which was also good. My wife ordered the shrimp chimichanga and that was killer as well. We made small talk with the waitress and one lone patron who got a carry out and sipped a Corona while we had a few more margaritas. We spent quite a bit, the bill coming to right about $50, but it was a grande experience we hope to repeat soon. When we left, the waitress gave my wife a hug and we stepped back into our wintry world. Maya's doesn't look like much from the outside but don't be fooled. It's a definite must-try!

Not what it used to be! Slow service and the food made me sick. Had a steak burrito and the meat was old and really chewy. Will not be going back.
(1)Paulina M.
I used to go there all the time with my family, the food was delicious, it was the only place near us that had "street-like" mexican tacos and tortas. We were out of town for a while But we went there again this past week, and found they had new owners. I had carne asada tacos, and tripe tacos. Disgusting! The meat was chewy and very cold. 2 days later me and my brother are sick. I would not recommend Maya anymore!

A group of eight of us went out to dinner here last night, we arrived at seven and even on a Saturday we got a table straight away. I had two small kids with me and one had a quesadilla and the other chicken tenders and fries. The chicken tenders were good, real chicken breast and came with waffle fries. The kids cheese quesadilla was also good and came with rice and beans. I had the shrimp fajitas which were tasty, fresh looking side salad and pico. The food all looked fresh and was enjoyed by all. They have renovated the place recently, the waitress was friendly and attentive. Even though I can walk to another Mexican, I will be getting in the car to drive back here. Great salsa too!

My brain, every time: Okay man, please do not get the burrito al pastor this time. I know it's the best burrito you've had since that time you lived in San Diego--they nailed the lightly grilled tortilla, red and green hot sauce on the side and everything--but seriously that thing is the size of your arm. You know we'll end up trying sneak in little naps at the red lights on the way home, and that's just senseless. Just get something else this one time. Please! "Burrito al pastor please!" (Cut to me passed out on the couch an hour later. No regrets!) (In fairness I did end up getting something different once: A dinner combo with sope, tostada and chalupa, all with carnitas. Excellent. Best Mexican food in the area and worth the drive from Cinci proper.)
(5)Paul K.
I finally made to this restaurant and I'm VERY glad I did it. Since I have not visited Mexico or have any relation to Mexican food, I cannot say how authentic it is. But I can tell the difference between prepared food from chain restaurants and real food. I loved the freshness of ingredients, and the spice! This is THE restaurant I will come whenever I crave Mexican food. The price is awesome, too.
(5)Kevin K.
Had fish taco, tasteless. Chorizo taco was good. Shrimp quesadilla was good, shrimp in every bite, cheesy and flavorful. Tostada ceviche was the best thing about the meal. Chips were unsalted and salsa was okay, needed hot sauce added. Soda was over carbonated. Server was good, we followed her advice on the food. We were traveling, but would return if in the area again. We could see being regulars if just for the ceviche. Average rating since nothing bad, nothing great. $35.00 was high for the experience, specials were more expensive on the board, than in the menu, what's up with that?
(3)Greg W.
Food is awesome !!! Great value. !! Friendly staff and food is homemade. !!!! Our choice when we eat Mexican fare.
(5)Nav L.
One of the most authentic Mexican spots in the city, in my opinion. The ambience is usually pleasant when I go for lunch. Many a times upon walking in I notice a fair amount of Mexican families enjoying their food--usually a good sign regarding the authenticity and deliciousness of the fare. I usually order a lunch special that consists two of either a chicken taco, enchilada or quesadilla with rice and beans on the side. The chicken is always cooked perfectly and goes well with the array of sauces you have to choose from. I'll get the guac sometimes, but I've had much better elsewhere. For the price and delicious taste of the classics, Maya has never failed to hit the spot.
(5)Jay B.
I was a Taqueria Maya/Maya Mexican Resturant frequent customer since it first opened. Their authentic tacos were the best in the city and their burritos were freaking huge! My best friend and I would eat here all the time, it reminded us of the taco shops in Chicago. I swore to all my friends and family that they had to try it and wouldn't find anything better in the city. I'm am saddened to say I am no longer a customer. The quality has gone down hill, and judging from the other recent reviews I am not the only one to notice. As I write this there is a 50% off deal on a famous website, but even that is not enough to get me to go back. New ownership has poured a lot of money into this place; expanding and adding a cantina, new decor, and a full time manager. When I noticed these "improvements" I thought they could only make things better, but I was wrong. New ownership has run this place to the ground. My problems started this year, possibly late last year. The first of my problems started when during a visit they had mistaken my choice of meat, giving me chorizo instead of carne asada on one of my tacos. No big deal, I sent it back. When it came back I immediately noticed that instead of making me a new taco, they scrapped the chorizo off of the flour tortilla and put carne asada on top of the huge grease pile leftover from the chorizo. Keep in mind these guys know my face, I've been here dozens of times. I was surprised that they would treat a regular this way, but I didn't complain - it's not my style. I finished my food even though my tacos were dry and not very flavorful. Since it wasn't lunch or dinner time I didn't think much of it and figured the cook was having a very off day. My next 4-5 visits were worse. I made sure to come when the meats would be fresh and the kitchen wouldn't be slammed (aka slightly before/after lunch and dinner times). I continued to order tacos yet I received pure dry tasteless garbage and nothing that I had become used to over the years. I ventured into other meats thinking they had just changed suppliers for their carne and carnitas, but I couldn't find anything that tasted fresh and flavorful. I got bad stomach cramps during one of my visits, but I was in denial about this place going downhill. Regardless, I've given up and will no longer spend my money here. I've yet to find an official replacement for authentic tacos nearby. I recently tried Mazunte in Oakley - so far so good. Their tacos are unique and flavorful, it would probably put Taqueria Maya/Maya Mexican Resturant out of business even in it's prime. I just wish it was closer

DO NOT EAT HERE! A friend of mine worked here as a Manager for a couple of weeks, and couldn't resist but quit because of the very poor and awful way things are done. To start with, NONE of the veggies are disinfected nor wash at all! Cilantro, onion, bell peppers, mushrooms, hot peppers, tomato etc. are cut and serve straight out the basket they come in, when veggies show a lot mud, the cooks only shake the boxes on the garbage to get em out! ... Chips and salsa? Nothing but LEFTOVERS! Jose, the owner; makes employees save chips and salsa leftovers to give out again! Horchata, Jamaica, and Tamarind water are made with tap water! Cooks are told to make water last a week as well, when the water last fresh only 2 days! Most of the time people are drinking old tap water with sugar in it. 98% of the time cooks made the food with no gloves on!, they were seen getting out the restroom back into the line with no gloves on. The menudo, and tripe meats need to be wash before preparing! And they are not! Tripe for the ones that don't know are the cows intestines. And what's inside of the tripe it's everything the cow eats. Cooks are to cut the tripe open and remove the poop out of it. Witch they don't! And menudo is tripe soup, so there. Margaritas! Yes, they do have it. But! They aren't fresh made. There's a bucket in the bridge with margarita in it that is not at least closed! Most of the time, meats like steak or cilantro are floating on top of it. And other than Margaritas, no more alcoholic drinks are sold. Dishes! Jose (the owner) in his attempt of "saving money" measures the amount of soap cooks can use to wash the dishes (they do it manually) which most of the time they left with nothing but water! At the time waiters do the silver ware , most of the forks have pieces of food still between it! And for the reviews saying meats are tasteless and chewy, it's because the owner buys much cheaper meats, ad of course there isn't much to expect from a mess that's about to expire. Ever since the old owner left, Maya mexican restaurant went down hill, with both quality and costumers.
(1)Rich K.
Used to be really good. Changed ownership and now super slow, raised prices and bad service.
(1)Benjamin W.
Totally awesome dive. If you blink, you'll miss it squeezed in next to Play It Again Sports. Food? Incredible. One of the best chimis I have ever had in my life. Rice? It was different than traditional Spanish rice you find at the Tex-Mex places, and was almost a cheesy rice. Chips and salsa were off the charts. However, the chorizo tacos are like a bad vice on steroids. Insane flavor and juiciness. Maya is worth driving out of your way to get a fix. This is my new favorite Mexican in town.
(5)Marlo J.
Hands down the best authentic tacos in Cincy! We tried the carne asada, barbacoa, al pastor, carnitas and lingua. Each came on corn tortillas and was topped with onion and cilantro with lime wedges on the side. It's the real deal and it's delicious and cheap. The complimentary chips and salsa are pretty good - actually, the chips leave a bit to be desired, but the salsa is excellent. The service is quick - taco cart quick. We were in and out in about 20 minutes and that was after spending 5 deciding what to order. So, why not give this place 5 stars? No margaritas. Given the authenticity of the tacos, I have no doubt that the margaritas would be insanely good, but they don't serve any hard alcohol, only beer. Also, the atmosphere isn't great. Not bad (by which I mean, it's clean), but nothing to write home about either. Probably not a great place for a nice date night - the check cashing window in the back of the restaurant doesn't add a whole lotta class. But if you're looking for delicious and authentic tacos, this place can't be beat!
(4)Lauren K.
I have been here multiple times and the food has always been great. They have the best authentically Mexican tacos in the city. Their burritos are also great. Believe it or not they rival Chipotle but they are a little different. (And they are twice the size, so make sure you're hungry!)
(5)Nathan V.
Really, this is the only place around Mason to get authentic Mexican and it's a steal. I'm not talking about Tex Mex food covered in cheese and sour cream. Tacos (with cilantro, onions and housemade hot sauces), tortas, and, yes, even menudo can be found here. Lunches are $6 with a drink, which is pretty tough to beat.
(5)Karen C.
Just average tacos. Did not like the fish taco at all. The chicken was so so, the al pastor was pretty good. The corn tortillas and guacamole were delicious. Salsa was good but very spicy! Service was pretty quick but not very friendly.
(3)Rachel M.
This restaurant is nothing fancy but man is the food good. I lived in the Los Angeles area for over 30 years and this by far is the best mexican food I have had since moving away. The salsa is nice and hot, the food is fresh and the people who work there are very nice. I had the chicken mole...YUMMY! I took half home for lunch the following day but it never made it :-) Gone by 11 pm same night lol too good

My SO and I decided to try Mayas once again in spite of the recent poor reviews. We arrived mid afternoon on Saturday. Indeed, the place was completely different, gone was the welcoming hole in the wall and it appears that this new Mayas might be larger than the one it replaced. Our waitress brought out mediocre chips and salsa that was too spicy for us. Upon questioning several items it was apparent she was not well versed in the menu. We ordered fried plantains, goat soup, tamales and a chicken chimichanga. This was a tragic meal. The chimichanga was different than any my SO had ever had and not in a good way. It was tasteless and dry. Accompanying beans were lukewarm, the rice was like rice at any Mexican place. The goat soup was an odd combination of bland/spicey hot. It lacked any depth of flavor and the goat was stringy and not tender. To the astonishment of my SO the coke was over carbonated and weak, barely tasting like coke. He kept saying, who screws up a coke? The fried plaintains were the high point of the meal, hot and tasty, served with what tasted like Big Mac sauce along with some ketchup. The tamales were extremely salty, the meat was dry as were the beans, a surprise in a tamale, at least to me. At some point our waitress disappeared. We waited and waited for the check. Finally we went to the front desk where our check was nowhere to be found. We told the owner what we ordered and mentioned that the coke was a pale imitation of The Real Thing. Apparently our waitress was out buying coke and no one covered her tables. The coke was comped. We really like patronizing small non-chain restaurants but unfortunately Mayas will be off our list until we read promising reviews once again.

This place is what the Mexicans call muy da sh!t.. The food is soooo good. My wife and I had just the tacos but you could tell they were made of all fresh ingredients. The decor is trash however, felt like I was negotiating a drug deal with Walter White. Overall very surprisingly good experience.

Visited once for dinner. Hospitality is average. Food is good. Salsa and nachos on the house are okay.

This is a strip mall restaurant, and that concept is continued into the the dining area. It is a clean, simple, no-nonsense establishment. Service is quick and efficient. It is a family style restaurant, with many tables set up together. First impressions: the salsa is fresh, has a good flavor and is spicy enough to be enjoyable. The salsa is very runny, so be careful of drips. The chips taste good and are not greasy. The menu is simple but covers the bases well. The prices seem quite reasonable. I ordered the grilled vegetable burrito, size large based on the pantomimed proportions of the server. When it came out, it was HUGE; easily twice, if not three times the quoted size. I typically stay away from these types of burritos at other places because I find the mushy onions and peppers to be greasy and generally unappealing. This burrito had beans and mushrooms as well. The flavor was nice with lots of fresh cilantro, and the cheese was amazing, but it was definitely heavy and greasy. This should be a late night shop or they should get a food truck, because this is exactly what I want after a Friday or Saturday night out drinking. They have Mexican soda and beer, as well as a selection of hot sauce. I would go back for sure, but probably order the small burrito and possibly pass on the fajita style.

Most authentic Mexican in the area. Langua tacos and tripe soup! Shrimp dishes with tons of shrimp. Nothing is more than $12. Good Mexican beer selection as well!

I ordered some food here for a company function. Chorizo, cheek, warm corn tortillas with that amazing fresh flavor--they gave us a huge, delicious, and authentic spread at a reasonable price. I've heard that the best ethnic restaurants in America are now in the strip malls and shopping centers surrounding our large metropolitan areas because recent immigrants are bypassing cities and moving directly to the suburbs. It's true in this case. Fields Ertel is the worst, dumpiest shopping district in the region. Don't let that throw you off. This place is amazing.

TACOS! real tacos... nary a dollop of sour cream around. Corn tortillas with the meat, cilantro, onion and lime and that's it, folks. They have almost 10 kinds that are around $2 each. Carne asada, carnitas, tripe, chorizo, barbacoa... The homemade sauces accompanying our tacos were wonderful. I don't really know what they were, but they were so great. We had (and highly recommend) the Shrimp Quesadilla, Carnitas tacos, chicken taco, barbacoa, chile relleno... And for the Ricky Martin fans out there, they have Menudo on the weekends. OK so that was a bad joke, but they really do have Menudo for the brazen offal eaters out there.

Changed owners some months ago. The food has deteriorated considerably since then. There is far less meat on the tortas, the corn tacos are more dry, the prices are higher, and the environs are, well, slicker (i.e., new tables, a bar, English TV stations playing on larger big screen TV's - none of these changes are positive in my mind). In the half dozen times I've visited since the ownership change, I have over time seen fewer and fewer Mexican/Hispanic customers for what that is worth. The last time we were there, which will be the last time we will be there, several of the dishes we ordered are traditionally served with lime but w got lemons! New owner tells me limes are too expensive - 75 cents each. Coincidentally the next day I went to the Mexican supermarket out on Northland Blvd. and they sold limes 10 for a dollar! No kidding. (By the way the prepared food at the supermarket - tacos, tamales, tortas are the real deal like Maya once was, and there is a nice Mexican restaurant in that strip mall too called something like La Familia that I understand is also what Maya was.) All in all it seems that the new owner is moving more in the new Mexican or Tex-Mex direction and a less-Hispanic crowd. That is, of course, OK it that is what you are looking for. Otherwise there has been a proliferation of more authentic places in the area.

Always passed this place but finally decided to switch things up. At first glance it's not place I'd normally go into but I'm glad we did. When we sat down and received our chips it's preceded to get better. My only complaint is that They did not have margaritas. :( ordered a mixed fajitas and they were very good. My boyfriend got a combo with a borrito, quesadilla and taco. SO GOOD! What it lacks in ambiance and scenery it makes up in their yummy food,

I used to be a regular at their previous location off Mason-Montgomery. Rumor has it that the landlord of the White Blossom strip mall raised the rent very high and forced many of the businesses to leave. I was saddened to hear that my favorite taqueria was closing down but I got excited when I heard they were reopening off Fields-Ertel. This was my second visit to the new Taqueria Maya since they moved near Kings Auto Mall. The first time I visited was right after they re-opened and I ended up being very disappointed. This time I had high hopes that they would shine like they did at their previous location but I can't say that I was any more satisfied. While the food is authentic, the carnitas and chorizo is very dry, possibly over cooked. While most people don't go to a good taqueria for atmosphere, you can't help but miss the great decor of the previous location. The cool chairs and tables are gone and the new place has a fast food sign above the grill that is turned on but doesn't have any menu items. It is great to have an authentic taqueria in town but the taste isn't what it used to be.

these are the same guys that had Taqueria Maya, so i'm copying my review over: I've been a few times, and this place is the real deal. It's just like being at a taqueria in Los Angeles, although without the safety concerns....oh, the nice, safe suburbs! The only thing i've had are the tacos. They're served up in hot, fresh corn tortillas and sprinkled with chopped onions and fresh cilantro. They give you 3 sauces on the side, but i like dropping the el yucateco bomb on them to really turn up the heat! I recommend the carnitas tacos...the others are good, but these are the goods! The chips are hot and fresh, but the salsa is just average. If you're looking for an authentic taqueria experience, you won't find a better one in the area!

Best taqueria in town. Hands-down. Extensive menu. Family run.

These are the real deal. The tacos are soft corn tortillas, tacos area made to order. Served plainly, with just fresh onion and loads of fresh cilantro, which I LOVE. I tried the pollo (chicken), the carne asada (grilled steak), and the al pastor (marinated pork). My husband tried the carne asada, the carnitas (fried pork) and the chorizo. I thought these were so delicious, there wasn't loads of "junk" i.e. cheese, sour cream, lettuce, masking the flavors of the food. They're simple and awesome. The housemade hot sauces are excellent, and served in plastic ketchup and mustard bottles (which we originally got no explanation of, you'll want to ask which is medium, hot, etc.). The guacamole was wonderful, we only got a small and wished we had ordered the large!, and the salsa that comes with every meal had a kick. We normally like spicy foods and have to "kick up" most Mexican restaurant salsas, but this didn't need any help! The chips were a bit lacking, but hey, there had to be SOMETHING for me to complain about! My husband wasn't as blown away as I was, I think he missed the piles of cheese, etc, that accompanies most "americanized" Mexican food, but he agreed that we will definitely return. We tried the tacos after reading so much about them on here, and he is anxious to try some of the other menu items, like his beloved chimichanga. :)

Read some reviews and decided to check it out. I must say the decor is not a bring your date place but the food.....the food is amazing! The open kitchen you can actually see the cook making each meal per order. Very authentic, kindof reminds me of street food. You get some nachos and the sauce when you sit down. Menu is quite extensive and the food is inexpensive. They also have specials everyday on the board. The waitresses are quick and attentive. The only thing I found a bit bizarre is that there's a booth with an open window next to the washroom. I see latinos come and go straight there with money and then they leave. Kindof reminds me of a Western Union of some sort. Other than that, the food and prices are amazing! Get the pulled pork tacos!

Holy GOAT SOUP! Dont' be a wuss. it was one of the most amazing thing's i've ever eaten. I've lived in LA for 10 years and have eaten Mexican food religiously. . . I had a couple tacos that were decent (the carnitas was pretty good), but the Goat Soup is where it's at.

Total dive but well worth it. Kind of the place where you walk in and you don't feel like you have to be dressed up at all. But still very authentic and good. We had fajitas and menudo (menudo! - but only on weekends) - good portion, good taste, corn tortillas (not flour). Also they had rice milk, cantaloupe water, and pineapple water. For us, with the fajitas, menudo, two kids meals - under $30. TV was on with some music videos on which was a little annoying but not too much. Also - if you get the burrito, it is HUGE. Double the size of the normal Chipotle burrito at least. Great for families, definitely would go back.

Authentic - real deal. Large portions. Very casual. Friendly folks.

Pro's- The Taco's the Taco's! Wow so good and cheap! Better then Nada. I recommend getting the Barbacoa. Fish was also amazing. The corn tortillas taste hand made and fresh. This is real Mexican not ground beef, so if that's what you are looking for go to taco bell.. Cons- the place is dumpy looking and the staff was not super friendly but not rude.

This places serves REAL Mexican food! Tripe, milanesa, beef tongue, and more meats... all served on a proper open-face taco with only onion and cilantro. Or in a burrito, huarache, etc. Many other traditional dishes and sauces as well. Prices are incredibly reasonable.

Best Mexican in Cincinnati at a great value. Well worth a try!

I grew up in Arizona and lived in Mexico for a while and this is the real deal. The lunch size carne asada burrito was huge, came with rice and beans and was only 5.75 Free chips and salsa and great service. I will be a regular for sure.

When my wife and I relocated here from Los Angles 10 years ago we knew we were loosing some really go authenticate Mexican food. The good news is that its here now. This place is very authenticate and the price is right.

My favorite kind of restaurant. Little hole in the wall with great food. Cincinnati is finally getting REAL taqueira-style Mexican food. I can get real tacos here. Service is good! The place seems like it's always full at lunchtime, and maybe it's me, but it also seems like it attracts a bunch of contractor and trade guys. Maybe they're just checking out the chicas that work there. Bar none, the authentico Mexican tacos, grilled chicken, heavy on the cilantro and onion on corn torts. Squirt some lime on top and pass the hot sauce. I'm also partial to the poblano stuffed pepper. Okay, the tamales are good too. But the biggest deal of all? THE PORTIONS ARE KING KONG BUNDY SIZED! (go ahead, find another WWF wrestling reference in a food review) Seriously, the burritos are like the size of a toddler. If you're looking for a solid mix of tasty food and value for the money, do the Taquiera Maya.
