It's nestled back in the strip mall away from Montgomery Rd. a bit, so it's not super visible. Then with the City of Montgomery's signage restrictions, it further hurts their visibility. But suffice it to say that if you're in that neighborhood and craving some excellent northern Indian eats, Kanak is excellent! I had the lunch buffet only, so I can't speak to any other items - but any place that puts Tikka Masala on the buffet is already a jump ahead of other places. And even for buffet, the recipe was great! Creamy and pretty decent. I would order it a little more spicy from the kitchen, but they've got to appeal to a large audience with the buffet. I also had the veggie pakoras... they were great. And the saag was awesome as well... in fact it was a tad but more spicy than the tikka masala. So I asked the waiter how long they'd been open and he said two years, which surprised me because I just hadn't really paid attention and seen the place. I told him how good I thought it was and said I was going to give them a great review on Yelp. That's where things got interesting... he went and told his manager that I was going to Yelp about the place and the guy came to talk. It seems that there's been an ongoing issue in the Cincinnati market where people who have only one review create an account on Yelp and post some negative driveby review. He said that it was easy to spot these fake reviews and he's complained in the past. I asked if maybe it was a competitor who was trying to post troll reviews and he thought that might be the case. He said that they were attacking Kanak for a while, but then move around to other restaurants in the family chain... Baba, Guru, etc... Pretty lowball if you ask me, but if you're the biggest player in the market, I'm sure that puts you at risk of being the target for... shall we say... dishonest competitive practices. I suggested that he just stay on top of it and always report posts that appear to be trollish (not really complaining about anything specific... just general "we had a bad time" and have no other reviews associated with the account). Now the funny thing was... while I was having this conversation with the manager, I accidently popped the trim facade off the end of the booth seat. But he didn't notice as he was speaking directly to me eye to eye. So while listening and engaging, I was trying to pull the piece back onto the large staple end that held it onto the booth piece. FINALLY!! I was able to pull it back together without even blinking!! How's THAT for stage magician sleight of hand!! But in regard to Kanak, I had a great visit and would not hesitate to return. Great food, great people.

Great tasty food. I don't know what else to say but apparently I have to include more characters in my review. So here you go!

Meat is not cooked properly for briyanis. Would not recommended this place for good briyanis. Chappatis are buttered rotis over here so pls be careful when you order. Only satisfaction is that chicken tikka masala was good.

I have really changed my tune about this place. Recently they have spruced up the restaurant, adding some more seating and new staff and it's back to being one of my favorite places to go for good food. The owner recognizes us and greets us warmly, but I see him do that with a lot of people, so it's clear that the friendly vibe is a constant. I see people from all walks of life eating here and having a good time and the atmosphere is cozy and comfortable. The spice level is great and the food comes out of the kitchen fast. The naan is especially good, soft and fluffy and perfect. I had a pretty mediocre review up before but I've changed it because they've changed and I'm happy to have my comfy old restaurant back!

I like this place, but I don't love it. Some coworkers and I were looking to get out and try some Indian food, and Kanak it was. The interior was pretty nice, albeit unassuming and pretty standardly Indian (all of you Indian restaurant frequenters know what I'm talking about). As usual, I opted for the paneer makhani. The spice was good and the naan was good as well. My biggest complaint about my meal was that the paneer was not super flavorful or fresh. It was okay, though. In short: Kanak was good. Everyone seemed to enjoy their dish respectively. Is it my favorite? Absolutely not. Then again, I'd be more than happy to return if the occasion arose.

Cincinnati loves its Indian restaurants, but this one didn't have the "wow" charm of its cousins. I ordered the chicken tikka saag, and I was content. The spice level was a smidge dishonest, in my opinion, verging on the conservative side, but savory nonetheless. Kanak is owned by the same owner as Ambar and Dusmesh, so if you like either of the above, consider your meal a general success. The restaurant is small enough to hear yourself talk, and ideal for small groups. A comely bar awaits those of us who prefer takeout. The service is prompt and friendly. So, bottom line: you'll have a decent meal here for a fair price, but nothing that sets it apart from other Indian restaurants.

Horrible experience. what they call a biriyani is actually a pulao. who puts green peas in biriyani??? the kulfi was rock hard and tasted stale. Pathetic. The rasmalai is a sweet dish which is supposed to be served chilled and they served us HOT rasmalai. The server who was serving us was eating at the adjacent table instead of serving us.

The food was some of the best Indian I've had in Cincinnati. The staff was friendly and came to each table offering fresh non. I will return for the lunch buffet.

One liner - Decent food at fair price. Serious spice level (be careful). Prawn masala - not so good. Gravy was ok, prawns are rubbery. Chicken Chili (Dry) - good punched-in spice (loved the most out of the orders) Service is ok. Cleanliness is ok Interior ok

Highly recommend for lunch buffet. The servers are attentive and the food is great. The buffet does not have the largest selection of "go to" Indian food, but still, the basics are there: chicken curry, jasmine rice, samosas, etc.

Located in a strip mall, Kanak was spacious and clean inside with casual, classic decor. I had purchased a Groupon, and we had no issues using it. We usually try to make it a point to mention it early on, so there aren't any misunderstandings. Since we had the deal, we had no choice but to order off the menu...which is a good thing because I otherwise eat wayyy too much at Indian buffets. We started with an appetizer that we hadn't tried before. I can't remember what it was called, but it consisted of crispy fried bread stuffed with onions and some other veggies and spices. We also had Paneer Bhatura, which is crispy layered fried bread stuffed with homemade cheese and Paneer Makhanni, which is kind of our go-to order. If you haven't tried it before, this is homemade cheese cubes cooked in tomato and cream sauce. It was really creamy, and everything was really tasty overall.

My husband and I recently went to Kanak with two friends for dinner. We were seated right away at a sticky table and then we waited a very long time to put in our order; we had to flag down a server. The food was typical Indian fair with lots of vegetarian options for me. I love super spicy Indian food and always make a point to order the top heat level...not spicy enough at all!! This always disappoints me a lot when I get Indian. The service was fairly poor. Our water ran out and we had to flag someone down for more rice twice because we only got one dish of rice for four adults. The food was okay, but I don't think I would go back due to the unwelcoming service. Prices also seemed a little higher than other Indian places in town.

I'd describe the food here as heaven on earth, lol. I'm a big fan of Indian food so I maybe biased...

This place has pretty good food, but it was REALLY DIFFICULT to order take-out over the phone! And the guy I ordered from was a bit rude too (hence the 3 stars, brought down for poor over-the-phone service). The saag paneer was DELICIOUS, as was the chicken tikka masala. The lamb vindaloo was a bit too spicy for me and my family, and I LOVE spicy food! They do a spicy scale from 1-6, and we ordered 2's which was perfect. The lamb vindaloo was a 3 (that was the lowest they could make it) and that was QUITE spicy!! The best thing about this place was that when we showed up to pick up our food, we needed to add a dish and some naan and they accommodated us within 5 MINUTES!

Went here for dinner on Tuesday night, food was wonderful as usual, I got chicken makhani and my husband the vegetarian saag. We had a terrible waitress! I ordered a cocktail that came with Lemon instead of the lime the menu stated, she didn't get our appetizer so we had to reorder, it was a vegetable samosa and was delicious, then our entrees came without the naan breads we ordered, we asked her about it, she sighed looked annoyed and told us we didn't order any! Needless to say when they did arrive, our meal was pretty much finished. Can't complain about the food but they need to get new or their old wait staff back. Otherwise I would prefer takeout.

Nothing bad, but nothing stands out as this seems like every other Indian restaurant around Cincinnati. After visiting so many Indian restaurants, I've gotten to the point of ordering the same thing to see if anyone does any different. Around here, they don't. There is nothing wrong with it, but no one really stands out as the best...but I digress. The service was prompt and kept our glasses full. There weren't many other tables so the waiters were able to watch us from the bar when something was needed. The food came out about 7 minutes after it was ordered, which was surprisingly fast to me, but I can't complain about fast service. The food was hot and good. The naan seemed fresh. The only downside to the garlic naan we ordered was that there seemed to be way too much garlic on the naan. Other than that everything was good. Keep going to your local Indian restaurant, everything is fine.

Average. Not overly freindly but neither are any of the Indian Rest. that this family owns. Lunch buffet is Ok. Small selction. 4 chicken dishes features. Not enough variety. Need more vegetarian items. New Krishna in Sharonville is by far the best. I live in Blue Ash but have been driving a little further for better food and HUGE variety.

Kanak has a nice lunch buffet with quality food and reasonably priced. It's in a convenient location if you're in Montgomery. I believe it's affiliated with Ambar, so it's pretty typical customer service. This is a no smiles environment.

A pleasant atmosphere with attentive service...For an appetizer the Keema (beef) Samosa was good...Chicken Specialty, the Chicken Tikka Masala was very good

My wife and I have been big fans of Ambar, Baba, Guru and (the now-closed Norwood restaurant) Daata Indian restaurants for many years. Now that we live in Blue Ash we're happy to have found Kanak just a few minutes away in Montgomery - same owners as the rest and the flavor & quality we've come to expect from them. There's something special about the way this family prepares their food. We've been to many other Indian restaurants throughout the country, and even the ones that have received critical acclaim in "foodie" places just can't quite compare. Many of those other places would be good, but at the end of the meal we'd invariably say "but it's not Baba". Sometimes I wonder if the reason their food is different than any other Indian restaurant is because they aren't "authentic", something that I've heard suggested before. I don't know if that's the case or not, but I quickly realize that I don't care! I'm eating here because the food is delicious, not because I'm looking for a history lesson. We often do take out which actually seems to get you a little more than one person can safely eat. The staff is friendly (cultural differences notwithstanding - I often see reviews to the contrary that I suspect are ignorant of this) and it's a great place for kids and small groups.

I was really pleased with my experience at Kanak. The waiter was very welcoming which is always a good start. It seems like they have the same menu as Ambar so I'm assuming they may be owned by the same owner. The lamb vindaloo was spot on! My wife ordered the chicken tikka masala, which was delicious as well. Really good Indian food, which is surprising for restaurant in strip mall.

  • Drew F.

The food has been fairly good, but lately the service is terrible. The staff seems to be arguing, perhaps because they are understaffed. For take out, I have shown up at the time they said the food would be ready, and I have waited 25 to 30 minutes the last two times. I will not be back.

Very good quality Indian fare. You will find mostly Northern Indian dishes with staples like dal, tikka masala, tandoori, tomato & onion sauce and paneer. Matter Paneer is my fave! The curry dishes are also very good. The nan (they spell it that way, I don't know why) is a little bit expensive and not that great. The vindaloo is no joke! That stuff is extremely spicy. My husband loves spicy dishes and he could barely handle it. You can order your level of spiciness 1-6. I was very pleased with my 3, it had a nice back of the throat warmth and tingle... a 6 is probably asking for trouble. They have a lunch buffet 7 days a week. I was told that it is under the same ownership as Ambar India and Baba India (both very highly rated on Yelp).

Another good indian restaurant in Cincinnati. Pros: 1. Great food, try the Chicken Briyani 2. Friendly service 3. Reasonably priced for the quality of the food Cons: Really nothing, just not impressive enough to get 5 stars

I'm very faithful to Ambar because I've thought it's the best Indian food in town. I gave Kanak a try because I heard they were the same owners. Kanak does not disappoint. Yum yum yum! The decor isn't that great, but the food more than makes up for it. I've eaten here at least four times and it is always good. Try it. You will love it.

This is the only Indian restaurant I've ever eaten at. But I've been several times, both for the lunch buffet and the regular dinner service. The food has always been fantastic. And I never knew bread could be so tasty until I had their Naan. The lunch buffet is great, a very good variety of dishes to choose from. And unlimited Naan! Service is very good, always there with refills and to clear used dishes. My only negative would be it seems a bit expensive. But I have no previous experience to compare it to, and I have no idea how much Indian food costs to make. Plus they do offer coupons. Regardless, they make it well and my taste buds thank them.

With Indian restaurants you really have to be careful about where you go because there are just so many bad and mediocre restaurants out there. We recently moved down to the Cincinnati area and had been commuting all the way up to the Dayton Mall area to Amar India whenever we got in the mood for Indian because we knew it would be excellent. However, we finally just got tired of the drive and decided to give some locations down here a try. This is by far our favorite we tried in the area. Not Quite as good as Amar India in Centerville, but pretty close. $8.50 for the buffet on the weekends is also a reasonable price so I'm glad we decided to try a few places around here.

I always enjoy eating Indian food, and Kanak is no different. While the space is nice--booths and tables with white table cloths and a bar--the restaurant as a whole lacks in ambiance. But their food is excellent, nothing to complain about. I highly recommend the sweet naan (made with raisins and almonds) to accompany the creamed lentils. A perfect combination. I've had several other vegetarian options and have liked them all, especially the palak paneer (or whatever the spinach and cheese dish is called). I would recommend it.

Service was good, vindaloo bland, the base seemed to be spineless, not even warm but I ordered hot. The biggest downside was the gnats swarming the table while we ate. Must be better choices in Cincy.

This is another of the Ambar family of restaurants and is just as good. Ambar was the first Indian restaurant I ever ate at, so it always has a special place in my heart. If you're in the burbs, then visit Kanak for the same quality and flavor. I've done the buffet, eaten in off the menu, and ordered food for take out. I've never been disappointed...well, except for the time they didn't have the saag paneer on the lunch buffet (I LOVE that dish!) The food is great, the service is decent, and the location is good (especially, since it's very close to my house)...what's not to like?

Pretty decent in my opinion when compared to others in Cincinnati. More importantly consistent.. Many others are hit or miss depending on your luck but not with Kanak. Standard Dal is good, chole- chick peas, are very good in typical punjabi style.. Chicken tikka masala is awesome. I have actually catered twice from this place for small get togethers and it has been a hit amongst all..

Delicious Indian food. Same owner as Ambar in Clifton. Had chicken saag at a level 3. Just the right amour of spice. Flavors were fresh. Naan was light and served hot . Definitely will be back. Coupons in valpack. Tons of people doing carry out too.

My wife and I enjoy Kanak more than any other restaurant in Cincinnati. The food is excellent. I can't speak to the buffet, but every appetizer and entree we've ordered has been excellent. The spice levels are well-calibrated; many places you go to will ask you for a spice level, but then the actual spiciness of the food is totally arbitrary. What you ask for is what you get here, which is nice. The beer selection is solid for an Indian restaurant- and the menu is extensive. You shouldn't have a problem finding something you like here. I think the food is fairly priced for its quantity and quality, and they distribute coupons from time to time in local mailings. The service is very good. We have always found the servers to be reasonably friendly. Although Kanak is owned by the same people that own Ambar, the atmosphere at Kanak is markedly more pleasant than Ambar. We used to drive down to Ambar because the food was great, but there's no reason for us to do that any longer. Kanak is our new home.

It's Ambar, only in Montgomery. Totally great.

This is Ambar exactly: identical menu, nearly identical decor. I have know idea why they gave it another name, but, if you like Ambar (and who doesn't?--It's the best Indian food in town) then you will love Kanak. For details, see my review of Ambar.

Frankly, I'm surprised that an Indian restaurant in Cincy would be serving food of this quality. For me, this is the best Indian food in town, hands down. You really need to go to New York or London to get similar quality. I have been going several times a week since they opened, and I've never been disappointed. It's not a fancy place. And they definitely stick to the basic indian fare, nothing esoteric or out of the ordinary. But what they do is very very tasty. I particularly recommend the Bhurtha, and eggplant and vegie dish that is just plain delicious. Decent beer selection too.

Kanak is a good location with and has a clean environment. It's lunch buffet though is catered more towards people who like spicy food. There is not much else for Indian food in the area besides the newly opened Azad. The food was alright but I have found better quality at Shaan in Hyde Park. Best option for the Montgomery area though.
