OK, I have to admit something...I have lived in the Falls for 15 years and have gone to this Swenson's from time to time. I always thought it was "ok", but haven't really been there since I was a Yelper (so a few years). I decided to look at it with a critical Yelping mind and give it another college go... Yeap, it is all of that! For some reason, I don't like burgers with double patties and usually go for the fish sandwich with cheese, lettuce and tartar sauce. I figured if I am already here, then I am really going "in" and getting fried mushrooms with Ranch. It really is worth it, even though I try to eat a healthier diet. Might I mention, too, that their shakes are really freakin' good! My kids got some Swensons money for Christmas & they only want to use "their" money for shakes! Plus, the "runners" are so fast- it is crazy! I am afraid to let my kids work there! I am always afraid someone is going to get hit! Another bonus? It is right off of route 8 AND they accept debit/credit cards! Be sure to tip!

Stopped by on a busy Friday night. Our drinks came with no lids.. filled right to the top... the car hop seemed puzzled that we wanted lids. "Everything" on a burger means mustard, onion and pickle... they have piles of other options... just don't get trapped into saying yes to "Everything" and wonder where the rest is. Cherry Pepsi is a real treat.... it's made with fountain syrup... not the commercial mix you could get in a grocery store... they also have grape as an option... but I wasn't up for that on this visit. Hubby got a chocolate mint shake... and enjoyed it... after it was lidded :-). Burgers were what you would expect.... undersized for the bun, but moist. Service was as quick as could be expected on a busy night and they had plenty of guys on running about. You don't get an itemized receipt... but I guess when 2 burgers, 1 order of fries, 1 shake and a soda comes to $15 you can't complain.

Went with my usual order two galley boys and an order of fried mushrooms. Awesome as usual and the service was fast.

Swensons has been a classic since I was a kid. I try to stay out of Akron in general--but I'll come up and make this quick stop right off the interstate for their food. Their burgers with those buns have always been legendary. And it's hard to knock the service--turn your lights in and they're running to you! Love it. Oh, and the milkshakes are t riffic too!

Swensons is truly an Akron tradition. Whenever I get back to Akron Swensons is one of my first stops. The Galley boy is a truly unique burger that I crave when I've gone too long without.

Always excellent customer service. I always look forward to going there. Great price point for burgers and seems to be as fresh as fast food gets.

I wanna be a real drive-in. It's a no crapper, for reals drive-in whith window service. The burgeres tatse as though they've been cooked on a flat grill that has 40 years of hard earned seasoning. It makes a great hangover cure, as long as you didn't get TOO wastey-faced the night before. I'm a fan.

It is with a heavy heart that I write this review. I've avoided it for so long because even the thought of Swenson's is painful when you have moved away from the area. Eating at Swenson's is like a crack addiction. Maybe you can overcome it. Maybe you can change your life, your friends, your location and start anew. But there are always days...days when the memories of how awesome crack is just continue to eat away at your mind. Or say, days like today when some thoughtless "friends" post on Facebook about how there is now a Swenson's food truck. (And maybe that friend wasn't really a friend but the Swenson's official business page. IT DOESNT MATTER) I'm a cheeseburger everything + ketchup and a grilled cheese on white bread person. I was addicted to Swenson's before I even ate red meat as a child. The mystery secret ingredient (aka crack) is in so much more than the burgers. My husband, a native of Massachusetts, is a converted Galley Boy fan. He also gets a butterscotch milkshake while I get the Californian (rumors claim this fantastic concoction is just ginger ale mixed with kool aid...probably crack kool aid). I have tried to force every out of towner I know to eat here but I've found the West Coasters to be the most wary of a Swenson's burger. They wonder where the meat is. Isn't a good burger about being big? Like In-n-Out? But Swenson's is a perfectly concocted sandwich. It's about so much more than the meat. The grilled bun, the pickles, the strangely too delicious cheese, and that skinny burger patty that is never over cooked yet still gets those yummy crispy edges. So here I am...3:00am on a Friday night. Alone...hungry...in Cincinnati...where most of my friends would satisfy their late night munchies with strange bland chili piled on over-cooked spaghetti with a mound of fluorescent cheese. And I think...those poor souls. They don't even know how good it could be. So blissful in their ignorance. So at the end of it all, I guess I'm thankful despite the excruciating cravings of an addict. Maybe I can't have it now but I will always have the memories. I know what it feels like to live.

The best fast food in Akron!!!! Or so I'm told. I've only been there once, but our family let us know this was the place to try, and they were right. Order the Galley Boy, it's their signature double burger with some crazy sauces and cheese, worth every bite, and the reason they have been in business since 1934. Fantastic milk shakes too, and tons of flavors. I wish they had Swenson's in Chicago!

Fantastic food. Everyone that visits Akron needs to eat here. Their potato teasers are one of the best things on the menu in my opinion. Can't go wrong with any of their burgers or milkshake selections. Watch pulling in close to the overhang on hot days because sometimes smells like trash -- have had happen to me at least 3 times -- making it so you don't want to dine there. Overall good food and its easy to take to go.

Swenson's is a well-known Akron area establishment. Their iconic Galley Boy is interesting, and sweetened with what tastes like brown sugar. They are okay. I don't love them or hate them. Their menu has some classic american fast food items. The atmosphere of the drive-in is nostalgic in a way, and the employees who run, not walk, to your car are some noteworthy aspects of this place. The main complaint I have for this place are their prices. They're a little steep on some items such as their triple cheeseburger or their fried bologna sandwich which I feel is extremely overpriced. I might get in the mood for Swenson's every once in a blue moon and if I do my go to items are the classic double cheeseburger, fried mushrooms with ranch for dipping, and a Florida. If you're new to drive-in's or are just passing through the Akron area I would say its worth giving a try at least once, even if just for the experience.

We have been going here for years. The burgers are good, great shakes, fries, fried mushrooms, and onion rings. A nice nostalgic feel as the servers run out to your car and if you "dine in" they attach the tray to your car. Better than commercial fast food places.

Whenever I drive by a Swenson's, I must stop for a galley boy if I'm hungry or not! And a very good milk shake as well. The burger is my favorite and the fast young curb servers are always polite. My favorite is the original store on Cuy Falls Ave.

Can't go wrong with Swenson's! Awesome burgers & shakes! Also try the fried mushrooms & potato teasers! Food is done perfectly every time the same for years & years! There's a reason they've been around forever!

I had a double cheeseburger there today. I've eaten there maybe once or twice before. It was fine. Nothing wrong with it. I just don't see what people get so excited about. The burger has that sweet taste to it that really isn't necessary for me. And the bun is crumbly; I guess it's supposed to be that way, but it didn't enhance it for me. It was nowhere near as good as my beloved Mogadore DQ (I never even go there for the ice cream - best fast-food burger and fries anywhere - ANYwhere), and I would put Swenson's decently lower than 5 Guys, also. Again, nothing wrong with it. I just don't know what all the fuss is about.

Oh Swenson's my love...how I will miss you!! We stopped in here for what will probably be our last visit in a while as we are moving to Jacksonville. I had my cheeseburg, potato poppers, and an orange shake!! Yum, yum, yum!!! I'm not a big fan of their Galley Boy - just skip it and go for a regular cheeseburg. I'm counting the days until we can come back...

Words cannot express how much I love Swensons... 5 years ago, I moved to California. I've had 5 Guys Burger. I've had In n' Out (which everyone said I just HAD to try)... But NOTHING comes close to what Swensons offers. You've got: VARIETY. I swear this restaurant must have the most extensive menu I've ever seen, from tater tots, fried zucchini, and peanut butter milk shakes! There really is something for everyone, whether you've got kids, health nuts (like myself) and hardcore meat eaters (like my now-occasional self). A little bit of everything, which is awesome! THE GALLEY BOY!! The greatest burger I've ever had. The funny thing is, knowing a little bit about how Swensons makes their burgers, I've made them for friends out here in California. At first, they thought it'd be "weird" but they always end up loving it. And you know what? As great a cook I'd like to think I am, I'll never come close to making burgers quite as good as Swensons! EXCLUSIVITY. At least for now. Swensons is very localized, so I know the only way I'll be able to enjoy it is when I'm back home. Although I often feel nostalgic and a tad bit jealous when I read all the facebook updates on friends and family visiting Swensons, I know I have something really great to look forward to. The best things about Ohio? Swensons and Cedar Point!! These are two places I tell everyone they MUST check out. And, as a side note, I'd say Swensons wins the facebook popularity contest. I can't tell you how often I read about or see photos of Swensons when I log into facebook... As opposed to any other popular burger joint. The last thing I'll say, for now, is that Swensons brings back wonderful childhood memories of an affordable, quality dining and eating experience. The service is quick, the food is excellent, and you don't need a Yelp review to figure that out for yourself. Who doesn't love a drive-in restaurant? Check it out, you won't be disappointed.

This food is the fried food of the gods. Get potato teezers with ranch. Eat the galley boy. Or two. Just go here and eat. The milkshakes are great too.

I will start off by saying I'm not from Akron and this may make all the difference in this review. I have been to Swenson's on about 3 or 4 occasions and not one time was I satisfied. The first time I went I got a double bacon cheeseburger. I was told the reason that I did not enjoy my experience is because I got the wrong thing. I was told to get there claim to fame which was the Galley Boy. On my next trip there that's what I got and NO!!!! It just didn't do it for me. I have had their food fresh, a day later, drunk and hung over and it still did not cut the cheese. It may be your cup of tea, but I won't go near that place. Oh and one more thing, I'v always went to the one on Cuyahoga Falls Ave. I was told to go to the one in West Akron, that's why its not good. So I may give it one more try and go to that one. If I change my mind, I will come back and let you know.

These are some of the best burgers in America, period (update: I found that Red Mill Burgers is better, but that's in Seattle). I've had In-N-Out, Fatburger, and practically any other restaurant known for their hamburgers. While some places can come close, nobody can beat the atmosphere and the taste of Swensons. Their secret ingredient is not-so-secret: brown sugar. They add that to their patties, giving it a sweeter taste than most patties, although it's not too sweet for a burger. Their specialty is the Galley Boy. It is just the right size and has just the right combination of ingredients, giving it that orgasmic taste. Their fries are either hit or miss; however, their milkshakes and onion rings are also amazing. If you're in the Akron area, not stopping at one of their many locations is a sin.

Best burgers, onion rings and shakes ever! I've been to several burger joints but none of them can rival Swensons. Now, that I've relocated to DC, I make a mad dash for swensons everytime I come home to Akron to visit family.

Hey Fonzi! Cruising from Chicago to Pittsburgh on a recent Saturday night, we pulled into Akron hungry for something local - we found it on Yelp, Swensons. It's a drive thru - old school - they come to your car! You pull into a spot and lights on for service. A guy quickly came to our car to take the order. Lights off after they take your order. We got a galley boy burger, double cheeseburger, 2 fries, soda and strawberry shake - 15 bucks! Burgers are tasty but on the smaller size - so order 2! Awesome fries! Lights back on to have them bring over the bill. Pretty cool local spot!

Best fast-food/drive-in burger in the Akron area. Nothing else comes close. Cheap prices and fast service (lights on!). My wife aka The Peanut Butter Queen says they have the best PB shake ever. The fried bologna sandwich is cholesterol-rising heaven. Try the California drink-- it's grape soda mixed with 7-Up or ginger ale. Fries are meh but the poppers are good. I've had In N Out Burger on the west coast and my wife says Swenson's wins. I say In N Out but that's a hell of commute.

My husband is from Akron and always talks about this place. On a recent trip up there I knew I had to try this place. SO GOOD! We got the Galley Boy, I wasn't disappointed. I'll be going back! The only thing I didn't like? No covers on the drinks? That's a mess waiting to happen!

Swenson's is part of the food pyramid in Akron. I'd cry if the option of a Galley Boy with bacon was no longer available. Try a fried chicken sandwich with mayo, mustard and grilled onions OR mayo, onion and pickles, Potato Teezers with ranch and a California to drink. You'll be a happy camper.

Deeee-licous! Tried it for the first time, I had a cheeseburger and fries, my husband the galley boy and the potato teasers. Everything was awesome! Definitely coming back!

I grew up in Akron and somehow never ate here! So on my last trip home, it was a must stop. Now I think I need a Galley Boy and poppers every trip. Delicious, cheap, and the service to the car was awesome. An Ohio staple.

I have been a fan of local Akron fave Swenson's during two different periods of my life. The first period was the mid-80's.. better known as the "if no one cares about the current music, why should I care about what I'm eating?" period. Those were the "Pop in the Howard Jones/Thompson Twins/ Thomas Dolby CD and bite into a Galley Boy and some fried 'shrooms" days. And those Galley Boys were SO delicious with their sweet BBQ sauce and gooey-cheesy goodness. Scratch the phonograph needle across the record... 30 years (and not saying how many lbs.) later, and we all eat healthier, don't we? I said DON'T WE?? Well, I try to anyway. So you can imagine my fear when, last weekend, as we were running out of time before our movie was due to start, and we all needed something to eat - someone suggested Swenson's. True, it's quick. But I was panicking because I wanted (and was dead-set on getting) a delicious and healthy salad. I caved to my friends, and we soon found ourselves as part of the "lights on" crowd in Swenson's parking lot. They had a list of salads. I was thinking to myself, "but a not-so-great-and-satisfying salad is still better than a Galley Boy, right? I ordered the salad with grilled chicken and was unprepared for the barrage of questions from our "waiter". "Do you want croutons with that?" "Would you like your chicken cold or hot?" "Grilled or fried?" "Shredded cheddar ok?" and of course, the ever-popular "What kind of salad dressing would you like?". Salad dressing.. yikes. I just knew I was going to have a choice of creamy italian, creamy french, creamy ranch, and creamy creamy. But I was pleasantly surprised when he offered French, Ranch, Lite Italian, and Tropical Vinaigrette. Tropical Vinaigrette? Yes please! 10 minutes later, out trotted our waiter with my friends' burgers, drinks, and my salad. But wait - what is that tucked under his arm? Huh?? A large wooden peppermill? Nice touch, but we were sitting in a parking lot. I burst out laughing when he asked "the question". "Would you like freshly ground pepper on your salad?" I couldn't resist. "Yes, and do you have any grey poupon?" I asked. The chicken was tender, warm and moist, and the greens were crisp (iceberg, but I couldn't really complain). And I would buy that Tropical vinaigrette by the bottle. Yum! There were a couple of ripe tomato slices (as opposed to the usual pale pink and dry offerings), a couple of hard boiled egg slices, and a light sprinking of cheddar. I decided that in the future I would actually choose Swenson's over many finer dining establishments if I simply wanted to go somewhere for a salad with grilled chicken. And that salad cost 5.00. It would have been at least 8 or 9 at an eat-in place. My friends really enjoyed their burgers too. Los Lobos' Kiko & the Lavender Moon playing in the car, and we were more than content. Service was quick and not pushy, prices were more than reasonable, and the iced tea was pretty darned good too. They also carry a great assortment of fountain drinks and milkshake flavors, along with the usual drive-in restaurant fare. I'm glad to see that in this world of quality-gone-by-the-wayside, Swensons has kept on without compromises, even during rough economic times. I am once again a fan, and it didn't even take a Galley Boy. Please, if you've never been to a Swensons, whether you live in Akron or are just passing through and want a quick bite - THIS is the place to try!

Swensons has great food! I always get their Galley Boy - the best burger I can think of! They also have wonderful fried mushrooms and very tasty milkshakes! You can't go wrong with Swensons and I have heard so many people from out of town make a point to visit Swensons when they're in the area. YUM!

Even though I don't like the location of this store, which makes everything chaotic, and it is located at a not very good part of the town, their burgers and onion rings are still the best. I usually go to the one in Stow and their location is much better than this. If they were at a better location/lot, they would get a lot more customers. Also, if it's your first time at Swensons, try their onion rings, they are amazing. Though, I don't really like their fries.

Tammy Jo F.
Swenson's has been a staple in Akron (and in my family) for years. We still love the Galley Boys, extra crispy fries, fried mushrooms, crispy/fluffy hamburger buns and sugary hamburger patties! My husband and I visited Swenson's a few weeks ago and sadly received 5 mushrooms (I mean 5 - small - mushrooms) in our fried mushroom order! We were extremely disappointed when we got home with our take-out order. I also remember a little more sugar in the hamburgers (which also used to be bigger). If you don't want to drink something with caffeine in it at Swenson's be prepared to drink Pink Lemonade (which is actually delicious)! Just sayin'...

Andy F.
Great burgers, fries, and onion rings. The service is also great. I'd kinda like to be able to go inside to eat, but that's not their concept. Overall, Swensons has great high-quality burgers at great prices. When visiting Akron, you need to stop at Swensons a time or two.
(4)
Mark N.
locals rave about fhis place, the hamburger meat seems to have a lot of sugar added, not a fan of the sweetness. huge variety of shakes to choose from including some rather unusual flavors. they come to your car to take your order and the expectation seems to be that you will eat in your car also. the jalapeño cheese fried potato ellipsoids are pretty good. When I ordered a key lime shake I discovered too late (after leaving) that it was vanilla, they were quite busy at lunchtime so I will give them one pass for this error )) there is no outdoor or indoor seating at the restaurant, since expectation is that you will eat in your car. I imagined or dreamed some pretty girl on rollerskates might come take the order, but staff walk to your card, a male staff member in our case.

Now listen...you talk about a great tasting hamburger? This is it! I was raised in Ohio, but never had the pleasure of nor the experience of Swenson's! The staff is Uber attentive, quick and pleasant. If your in Akron, do yourself a favor and get a Galley Boy! Oh and the onion rings too!! Good stuff!! #Ohio

Swensons is a drive-in burger joint with great service. Their food is mostly burgers, but they offer chicken and fish sandwiches (who gets those at a burger joint?), as well as fried sides. I have lived in NE Ohio for over a decade, and I think I've been to Swensons 4 times. I have friends who worship Swensons burgers, but I must say I'm a bit more lukewarm toward Swensons. First off, the service at Swensons has always been really great and really fast. Servers are really friendly - friendlier than most other restaurants and eateries I've been to. Just park your car with your headlights facing the building, and turn on your lights when you're ready to order, and they sprint toward your car like they're in a race. I've only ever ordered burgers. Most recently, I got their quarter pound burger and Galley Boy burger. The quarter pound burger was a, well, a good-sized burger with good ingredients. It was good. It didn't blow my mind, but it's a good solid burger for about the same price you'd pay for a Wendy's burger, but they taste a little better (no disrespect to Wendy's.. love them). The Galley Boy is a cheeseburger with two special sauces: bbq sauce and, I believe, a tartar sauce-like sauce. Really, the bbq sauce just kind of cancels everything else out, and it tastes like a cheese burger with bbq sauce on it. I got the potato teezers for a side, which are like fried potato cakes with jalapeno and cheese in it. Again, they're good, but not transcendent. Overall, Swensons is a nice drive-in burger joint with good burgers and sides, but with a wow-factor for me. I have friends who come in from out of town and will not leave until they get a couple Swensons burgers, so they're experiencing something I'm not. I'd like to rate at 3.5 stars, but Yelp doesn't allow it, and I'll round up because the prices are reasonable and the service is great.

This place has the best burgers on planet earth! They have the best milkshakes, the best onion rings and the best jalapeño poppers! If you haven't tried Swensons, you haven't lived. They really need to consider franchising and they would put every other restaurant that sells burgers out of business!

Born and raised in Akron! However, I moved to Atlanta in 05. I am writing this review with the excitement of knowing I will have this burger this weekend. My mouth is watering thinking about it. It is a unspoken rule, that when I come back this is one of my first stops. Yes, it annoys my family but suck it up. I miss my double cheese burger, banana and strawberry milkshake and onion rings and/or fries. Yes, I said and, or! Don't judge me, just drive, says my thighs. See you on Saturday!

What a gem summit county has in Swensons. Anyone who has gone to akron u or KSU and moves back home go on and on how much they miss swensons. Service always good the sprinting to car to take order and then quickly bring out. From galley boy to tots and chocolate coke..

Nice drive in burger spot, and staff was super friendly. I'm not used to seeing waiters run! Ordered galley boy and tater and jalapeños. Not a huge fan of the sauce combination (tartar and bbq?) but can respect the quirkiness of it all. The olive on top only made it more of a mystery. Fries reminded me of high school cafeteria lunch but the deep fried taters were interesting. It's obvious the staff and cooks take pride in what they do and enjoyed the experience and our food.

Growing up in Akron, I never knew how much I love (and would miss) Swensons until I moved away 22 years ago. Fortunately, my family has stayed in the area, and I have a reason to come back and enjoy the unique goodness that is Swensons. First, you need to understand that Swensons (there are seven locations) is an old-time drive-in restaurant - think Sonic, but older and only available in Northeast Ohio. You drive up and turn on your lights. A car-hop comes RUNNING out to your car. When I was a kid, the car-hops were mostly University of Akron students, earning extra money for college through tips. They make everything to order - so after you order, sit back and relax. It WILL be worth it! I don't know how well I can review the whole menu because I don't think I've varied my choice in the 38 years I have been going here. The menu is varied - it's not just burgers and fries. My wife swears that the jalapenos potato teasers are the best she's ever had. My goto has always been a bacon double cheeseburg plain. Note that they are called "burg's" not burgers. I also get a side of fried mushrooms and a large California. A "California" is something like a limeade with grape flavoring. They also have a "Florida" which is limeade with orange in it (although I've never had one). We have been known to visit Swensons first thing when we come to Akron and as a last meal before leaving.

My family agrees that if we ever find ourselves on death row we will order Swenson's Galleyboys as our last meal.

Just, wow... I'm from California and our standard of a damn good, cheap burger is In n' Out. I've been going there ever since I was kid; grabbing a double double with grilled onions, shake and fries on the side, while enjoying it watching the sunset in the back of a pick-up at the beach was something I did often growing up and still do on occasion. Swensons, this greasy dive in Akron, blows that out of the water while barely batting an eyelash. I am not shitting you. Only been to Ohio twice. Not particularly fond of Cleveland or Dayton. I never plan on going back there ever again. But, until the end of my days, I will think fondly of Swensons and curse my state for not having anything as remotely good of a cheap and freakishly tasty burger as this place does. Swensons was the first place my girlfriend took me on our tour of restaurants she haunted as a kid during our trip to where she grew up. It's a drive-in place, you park next to the brick kitchen where a young guy comes running up to take your order at the driver's window. With a flick of their wrist, they toss a number on your windshield and greet you with a wry smirk before running off to other cars ... always running. The experience is a trip and worth bumping up the rating an extra star if the food didn't give it the highest marks on its own. Had a Galley Boy and it was incredible. Wrapped in a thick piece of wax paper that is slowly turning clear with grease, two very juicy patties with melted cheese to hold it together, grilled onions, a sweet BBQ sauce and a tangy one to compliment, on a warm bun with an olive skewered through the top of it. This perfect martini of a 'burg' is their premiere fare and after widening my eyes at how good it was, my girlfriend brought up an amazing point of what burgers on the west coast are seriously lacking. Every place over here, In n' Out, Angelo's, even Habit (which I have come to love), any MAIN burger you get is simply one with lettuce and tomato, and possibly cheese. That's come to be known as a 'California' burger, apparently, though any place you go to always seems to serve it that way, at least on the side. No place here has a signature burger with a bit more to it that goes at the top of the menu. Here, secret sauce just seems to mean 1000 Island dressing or mayonnaise mixed with ketchup. Swensons has opened my eyes a bit and I have the woman I love to thank for that. California? Guys? We may have damn tasty burgers, but we're kinda ... boring. Some greasy dive over here needs to make a delicious burger with more than the basics and call it their main fare ... and fast!

If you are in NE Ohio you owe it to yourself to stop by Swensons. If you are not in NE Ohio, you may want to fly there to go to Swensons. Their hamburgers are that good! Their hamburgers are easily the best in the universe. I don't know what they put in them. It may be brown sugar, or butter, or lard. It may also be crack, or heroin. Whatever it is, they are unbelievable! The only problem with Swensons is that there are none in California. Although that may be a good thing as if there were I'd probably weigh 400 pounds.

Curb service ! All the waiters run to and from your cars! I love the banana and hot fudge shake! The cheeseburgers are the bomb! They have something for everyone here!

Went there for the first time today and got very excited. Had heard great things about it so I thought I would "go big or go home". 2 galley boys, french fries, and a shake. I'm stuffed. Anyways, as soon as you pull up the guys run over to your car and take your order. It takes a little longer than that to get your food but they're fairly prompt and it's entertaining to watch the guys in motion. The food is VERY reasonably priced which was great. I come from San Diego, land of the In n' out , so I have my own preferences for fast food but I'll say now that Swenson's gives In n' out a run for it's money. It's that good.

All of the Swenson's in general are a 5 star, relative to what they are, a quick burger joint. I always get the Galley Boy, which is delicious. A great place to drive up and get a quick burger, always quick and friendly service.

Rated 4 stars for what it is: fast food delivered to your car. The burger was great, the servers ran around tirelessly and it was a great experience. Roll your windows up 1/3 of the way after ordering if you want the food to stay on the tray outside your far. turn on your headlights when you need anything after ordering (i.e. to have them take the tray away). Glad I went to experience an old fashioned car hop.

Everyone seems spraked put on methamphetamine here. Got WAY too much energy from the waiters. If you want crystal this is the place baby

As for the service, even though they "run" to your car that practice seems pointless because the food always seems to take ten minutes anyway. That being said, the food is more than worth the wait. Do yourself a favor, if you've never had a Galley Boy-get one. You've never had a burger like this, as delicious as it is unique. The onion rings are also among the best in town.

Amazing service!! Just had my 1st Galley Boy sandwich. The waiters literally run to your car and meet you prior to you pulling into the parking spot. Something you really have to witness. There's no slacking here! Well done Swensons!!!

Swenson's, one of the first places I try to hit up when I come back in town for a visit. I went to The University of Akron, and lived in Akron for many years, and this is the best open all the time burger joint EVERYONE knows! Everything is good the burgers, the chicken nuggets, fries, onion rings, fried zucchini. OMG fried heaven... And plenty of drinks, pop, shakes, floats... Yes PLEASE! And they do have more than one location, so if you ever pass by a Swenson's please, do yourself a favor and stop. Way better food than a quick stop by Sonic or any other drive up joint. Plus, these guys that come out to your car, usually run... I mean talk about great service if your in a hurry!

Went here for the first time awhile ago. I got the galley boy, onion rings, and a peanut butter shake. The burger was good, but I thought the bun was too much, so I could barley taste the burger at times, none the less it was delicious. The onion rings were SOO good. They had a crunchy sweet coating, and they are the best I have ever had, hands down. The shake was also good. I love that they sprint around the parking lot taking orders and delivery food, although it did make me feel like I had to quickly whip out my wallet and pay, fumbling around, but that might just be me. Great experience, love the drive in feel, and good service, even better food. A MUST when visiting Akron.

Rated #1 so much that you have to go. I'm a vegetarian and appreciate that they have options for me. They're famous for their burgers and milk shakes.

If you're craving a great burger without all the fuss, Swensons is the way to go. Their shakes are to die for and their fries are great too (pro tip: order them "well done" if you like them crispy as opposed to soft). The staff is always friendly and ready to work. Bottom line is Swensons is a place you need to stop by if you're anywhere near the Akron area!

I was in the area for business and heard from the locals that this place had the best burgers in Akron. I like me a good burger but I'm a Californian so I come from a land of all kinds of gourmet and exotic burgers...oh and In N Out of course so I'm a little skeptical. Had the galley boy, fries and a vanilla shake....so glad I did. It was delicious!! To bad I live in another state but if I'm ever in the area again, I'm headed straight to Swenson's!

I wanted mine to be the review farthest from the Akron area, but I noticed that another reviewer lives near Seattle, just an hour north of where I live in Olympia, Washington. However, I can claim to have eaten my very first onion rings at Swenson's Drive-In when my then 16 year old cousin drove me there. I was 14 years old. That was 59 years ago! Just try to top that, other reviewers. I was born in Akron, but never really lived there. It was those occasions when I visited my Akron relatives I would be sure to stop as many times as possible to dine at Swenson's Drive-In. PUT ON YOUR SUNGLASSES, BECAUSE HERE COMES THE BAD NEWS: Each time I leave Swenson's Drive-In I'm disappointed. Why? Simple. I always wonder if I should have ordered this instead or that or that my stomach was elephant-size so I could consume one item of Swenson's entire menu. Their entire menu is really that good. BTW, nobody has mentioned their yummy malted milkshakes. Considering how many reviews I've read on Yelp, Swenson's Drive-In has the highest overall ratings I've ever seen for any yelp category from automobile repair to zebra grooming. But they're not getting away so easily from this reviewer. No way! MY FINAL COMPLAINT ABOUT SWENSON'S DRIVE-IN: There are no Swenson's Drive-Ins close to Olympia, Washington.

so I am on a quest to find the perfect burger. No wait it's more then this. I am Navigating my journey with a renewed and even transformed perspective. I am trying to Thrive rather than just Survive. This is not just a mere simple quest. This is "I have an susceptibility toward food. No this is not just a burger obsession. This is I am going to alter my current business so that I can seek out my idiosyncrasy! I think I have gone mad, am I talking or chewing bricks? Either way I am going to lose teeth (insert british accent here) but what I am going to gain is hopefully what establishments like Swenson's has contributed to this Wonderful World we live in! Happy, content bellies. So per my quest AKA research I am not just going to google these wonderful eateries, I am using my mobile yelp app and globe trot across our sweet land of liberty. Please note, I like to have fun so of course I will have non-food related reviews and Mary S stories as well. I'm Jet setting not just working darn it! I have to say for over 2 years now I have hatched this big plan and have been following a few Dapper Yelpers. One of the reasons I checked in here. As being apart of this wonderful yelp community I am learning that "We the people of Social Media" have a Voice. The aim is to develop more dialogue and community cohesion within society. I want to play crucial roles on both ends of the spectrum. I want to yelp & I want to be yelped So per my friend list (in a research kinda way) a few Fellow Yelpers intrigued me here. My new way of thinking oh it has a Diana Z or Matthew B burger connoisseurs approved. My favorite compliment sent after a check- in is "Try the "Galley Boy" you'll thank me later"....and oh yes I need to send you a thank you note! My love affair with the burger goes on, and yes the Galley is a great notch to have under my belt. Would I go back to you? Heck yes I would... double cheeseburger dressed with two sauces, one mayonnaise-style with bits of onion added, the other zesty barbecue Served on a toasty bun with a cute olive that's winking at me! You are my kinda boy! Since 1934 Feeding cars full of people offering a blast from the past, Swensons quality, service and charm has hooked me in. Thank you for shaping my quest.

This is a hometown favorite. We always stop by while we were in town. This past visit our order was totally screwed up even though the runner repeated it back twice. That's ok we will go again!

Oh Akron, it's like stepping back in time. Old school drive-ins where you turn on lights for service and clean-cut young men are happy to deliver service as great as the food. Nothing fancy, just a great product brought to your car with pride. I checked out a few of the numerous drive-in burger joints aroung Akron and found Swensons to be the clear winner. The carhops come running to your car to get your order, to answer questions and to deliver food. I saw some serious hustle and for 10pm, I was impressed. I went with the classic Galley Boy along with a side of fries and a vanilla shake. The shake and fries were good. And while the Galley Boy may have been just an average size burger, the taste is anything but. I'm not sure what all goes on or into the Galley Boy, but it's most definitely made Swensons the first stop on my next trip to Akron.

Swenson's Galley Boy is where it's at. It's not like any burger you've had before and it's delicious.

The burgers are crack!! Your not a true akoner if have not at least tried a galley boy. Every time I have out of town guest I take them to here and they love it!!

My favorite burger restaurant. They don't try to pile on fancy, expensive ingredients- just give you a delicious, simple burger that is exactly what I crave. Their burgers have a unique taste with the brown sugar added which is a hard thing to achieve with burgers. VERY cheap, perfect for a quick meal and affordable to everyone. Their fried zucchini, mushrooms, and teasers are great appetizers or snacks. Customizable burgers. Extremely quick service and attentive servers.

I am from out of state, so this visit was my first to Swenson's Drive-in. The setup of eating in my car and having my food brought out to me by servers reminded me a bit of Sonic. When my husband and I first showed up, we were at first sad that we did not see any open parking spaces near the restaurant, but then we noticed the nearby parking lot. After several minutes, a server came running to our car. He asked us what we wanted to order. We told him that it was our first visit, so he gave us a menu to look over, and he left for several more minutes. He had told us to blink our headlights when we were ready to order, so we did. He came running back. We ordered the Hamburg with Everything, the Galley Boy double cheeseburg with sauces, onion rings, potato puffs (tater tots), and milkshakes. The food tasted a bit better than McDonald's food, but it was still ordinary and cost twice as much. I did get a kick out of sitting in my car and watching the servers run around. I did not understand why they hung the serving tray on hooks on our partially rolled-down car window, because the window is curved and kept causing the tray to slide off.

An Akron staple, Swensons has been around forever and for good reasons. Burgers are unique with a subtle sweetness that is what sets them apart (aside from Sky-Way which is essentially the same just smaller chain) Burgers are made to order, you tell them what you want... not what you don't and prices are reasonable. I would recommend ordering a double for a nominal price increase for bigger appetites The shakes are legendary and each one is worth a try. THE GALLEY BOY is the premier burger and is legendary for it's "secret sauce" (shhh its bbq and tarter sauce mixed... don't knock it until you try it!)

Swensons burgers are by far my favorite burgers. Awesome late night snack. NOTHING compares. SUPER CHEAP. But they don't skimp on quality. The only thing I don't like is that you can't use more than one credit card per car/ split the bill. Kid Rock even likes Swensons. I was there once when he put in an order for 200 burgers.

This is a stop for us every time we come to Akron... I always get the Galley Boy (2 patties, melty cheese everywhere, 2 special sauces), Potato Teasers (jalapeno & cheese potato puffs -- not super spicy though) with Ranch, and a "Florida" (can't remember exactly what it is, but it's amazing!). I would love to try everything else, but I love this combo SO much! Classic Drive-In service (lights on when you're ready!) and these guys hustle! Great place and this is my favorite location!

Don't be disappointed that I don't review the burgers. Was in the mood for other food on Swensons menu. Just up the highway from our home in Canton, the soups and salads were wonderful. Their beef vegetable soup came in three sizes and the medium almost left no room for other things. I ended up taking the balance home. Really enjoyed the chicken strip salad. The meat was moist and came over a healthy amount of greens and other vegetables. I'm returning to try the beef salad another time. Thought about taking home a bucket of chicken which inclludes potatoes, cole slaw, rolls and a choice of apple sauce. Maybe next time, maybe not. The chicken is strips rather than pieces and the $16.55 price is too much for just strips. May be a chain but certainly personalized.

If u r from Akron, u already know. If not, it's a must try kinda thing. I come to town about twice a year and every time I have to eat there 2 or 3 times before I leave town. I love the dbl burger and tater teasers. My daughter always gets the galley boy. They also have really really good fried mushrooms. Excellent food! A must eat burger, if u are in the area.

How Jimmy Buffet didn't list Swenson's in his top 10 cheeseburgers is beyond me (he picked Skyway... seriously?) Swenson's is it if you want a great burger, drive-in style.

How did I not try Swenson's until I was 26 years old?! It's probably because I rarely ventured to Ohio and because the small chain was unknown to me before my fiancee introduced me to it. Boy, am I thankful to her! Though Swenson's is a drive-in, you are treated to exceptionally fast service from the runners/servers. The customer priority is made very clear, and orders come up quickly. For food, I order the Galley Boy (with homemade horseradish and barbeque sauces that complement each other excellently), a side of crispy onion rings, and a peanut butter hot fudge milkshake. As you can see, I definitely splurge when I go here! The onion rings stay hot and fresh for the whole meal, and the portions are generous, all for very reasonable prices. Every time we visit her family, Swenson's is now a must. At least one trip, usually more!
(5)

Quick and efficient service. Car hops jog to and fro, and are very attentive. We ordered milkshakes and potato teasers (jalapeno poppers with potatoes & cheese). The milkshakes really hit the spot, and the potato teasers were good. We will definitely return if we're in the area and craving a milkshake!

My review may be biased since I grew up close to Akron, but for me, Swensons is my favorite burger HANDS-DOWN! Everytime I go, I get 2, sometimes 3 items: Galley Boy, Double Cheeseburger plain, and onion rings cut up. If I don't get onion rings, I sometimes get the fried mushrooms. These burgers are not meant to be "pretty" like Five Guys or In-n-Out. They are smashed together, sauced up, greasy bundles of pure goodness. So if you're ever in NE Ohio, stop by and get a Galley Boy. Remember when you pull up to turn your headlights on, otherwise they won't know you need service.

Good place to go and Eat Fast Food, that is a break from the norm. The service is Top notch, waiters (more like runners) running to your car immediately after you park, ready to take your order. If you were like me and it is your first time going, don't fret about ordering and not knowing what's on the menu, the waiter will give you a menu and tell you the novelties to that which they are famous for. I ordered, just a regular double cheeseburger, (not the recommended Galley boy, as i'm skeptical about 'special sauces') and fries w/ a strawberry milkshake. The burger was pretty good, albeit a little 'bunnie' for me. The fries, meh, alright, great milkshake. All and All i'd def. go again, and try other burgers on the menu and a different side other than the fries. Side note, if you have daytime running lights, i'd suggest to turn off your car totally, as waiters will continue to run to your vehicle expecting you to order something, as it is the rule of ordering there. Headlights mean you are ready to order. and DON'T beep your horn either! ha!

What's more "Vintage America" than Drive-Ins, Burgers, Fries and Shakes?! Swenson's seems to capture everything great about the Americana Nostalgia of yesteryear... The experience starts as you pull in to a parking spot. Be sure to leave your headlights on for service. A waiter will then SPRINT out to your car and take your order. I typically get the famous Galley Boy, Potato Teezers with a side of Ranch and a Root Beer. The soft drinks are served in a styrofoam cup of crushed ice, which is simple, but very appropriate. Let me begin and end my review with a few comments on The Hamburg (as they call it). First off, there is a reason why it was voted "best burger" in multiple publications throughout the years. The ground beef patty is simple. It's thin and tastes of sweetness (possibly brown sugar?). The hamburg seems to be cooked on a diner style flat-top, helping to preserve the natural flavors. The bun is crisp, yet steamed to perfection. The melted cheese seals everything together wonderfully. The hamburg as a whole is a luscious, succulent, mouth watering experience! No burger lover can claim a complete life without experiencing a Swenson's Burger at least once in their lifetime!

My husband introduced me to Swensons and the weirdness that is The Galley Boy - and I completely fell in love with it. This place is SO tasty and the service SO good that we've considered moving here just for the food (he's from Akron)!! Galley Boy + Tater Teasers + Peanut Butter Shake = Heaven.

OK, what the heck am I missing? While in town last weekend, I went to this joint with my parents who knew of it from growing up in the Akron area (and had fond memories of it). The cheeseburger was possbily the blandest cheeseburger I have ever had in my life. Not impressive at all! The fries were decent. The chocolate (and strawberry shake) were pretty tasty. The servers were INCREDIBLE. Fast, friendly, and always on the go. I don't think I will ever come back again. My dad agreed with me - my mom thought it was decent. Disappointed!

We're from New York and we were in akron for a concert. After the show we were famished so we looked up something that was open at midnight. Swensons was that place. I've never been to a drive in but this was deff a fun experience. Our server was running so fast the we thought he was on roller skates. ( and it was down pouring ) The food came out faster than any resturaunt I've been to. Even though we were given someone else's food. Our server trout we waited too long to get our food, so he offered to pay our a third of our bill. We refused this because our food still came really fast. He deff deserved an extra tip for running so fast. Lol I was impressed. The food was decent. We both tried the galley burgers. My bf liked it. I didn't. Not a fan of tartar sauce on my burgers

Swenson's in a NE Ohio classic. Whenever I am in town, I visit Swenson's. I love their burgers and their fried mushrooms with ranch.

A first timer firsthand account of Swensons (without all the Ohio prejudices). Wow these guys run to your car. That is refreshing. Ok, so the galley boy. This is a pretty good burger. The meat is average, but the 2 sauces that normally would not coexist do. Turns the burger into a creamy cheesy mess. I personally love green olives, and the galley boy gets one on top. Potato Teezers? So what are they teezing about? Maybe about having jalapenos in them. Rivaling the burger is the non menu grilled cheese with Coney sauce. It will be a hard decision next time burger or grilled cheese. Overall it's a nice experience. Drive ins are rare now, and having an established one with not horrible food is a plus.

Swensons! If you live in Ohio and haven't been here, you are a terrible person, and I hate you. Not really, but yeah....really. I seriously owe half of the weight I've ever gained to this place. If they delivered I'd be immobile....no joke. Fat hanging everywhere.....but anyways, the food here is amazing. The burgers are the best I've ever had, the chicken is top 5 at least. The fries are also the best around, screw fast food as you know it. Best selection of drinks I've seen in this area, EVER. Stop here, get a galley boy and some potato teasers and a California to drink, and you're good. I'd eat here everyday if I didn't care about my heart stopping haha. Drive there, ride a bike, a horse(?), or whatever you need to get there and get some of this amazing food. My rating? 20, on a scale of 1-5.

I am going to make this simple. The Galley Boy is the greatest burger on earth. If you are anywhere near the state of Ohio, get it, enjoy it, and remember it forever.

GALLEY BOY, POTATO TEASERS AND A FLORIDA/CALIFORNIA (Shakes are good too). This is my absolute favorite burger place. Pull up, sit in your car, and eat till you can't anymore. This place is always fun to go. The help will run to your car soon as you turn your lights on to take your order. I recommend you keep a menu in your car even though you won't need one after you had a galley boy. Take people from out of town there and they will be jealous they don't have a Swenson's In their town. Only one credit card per car though.

I am not very often in Ohio, but when I am it's usually Akron and within the first 24 hours of arriving I HAVE to go to Swenson's and get their double cheeseburger, tater tots and a chocolate malt (with extra malt I've learned). The food here is greasy, wonderful, awesome, delish and absolutely everything you're looking for in a drive-up spot. Even though it's not the heathiest, I can honestly say that you don't feel so gross after eating their food like you do with a McDonald's or Burger King. Everything seems really fresh and completely made-to-order. And sadly, I sit here so far away in Chicago...bring us Swenson's!

I've written 27 Yelp reviews and have yet to express my true feelings for Swensons. Do you think that Elizabeth Barret Browning was able to pen Sonnet 43 in a few days or even months after meeting husband to-be, Robert Browning? A love like this takes a lifetime to accurately express. It is finally time (sans-iambic pentameter). Swensons, How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. 1. Burgers. You really only have 2 choices as far as I am concerned. You can either order a double with cheese, lettuce and mayo or the Galley Boy. As a life long lover of ketchup, I encourage you to hold off if you opt for a simple cheeseburger. There is so much flavor and sweetness in the burger and the cheese that you do not need ketchup. The Galley Boy is a double cheese burger with special sauce that is something like BBQ sauce, mayo and maybe thousand island dressing. At some point you have to try the Galley Boy (if not, you are dead to me). It is the most fantastic thing to come from a foil wrapper (sorry Hershey kisses) EVER. 2. Sides: Go for the onion rings. They are crispy, oily, served in a wax paper sack and perfection. The only other option is to just get 2 burgers and screw the side dish. This, I will allow. 3. Drinks: The California or the Florida with light ice. Yeah this may be just grape or orange soda, mixed with sprite but its fantastic and the necessary accompaniment to a swenson's burger so do not question me. Also, trust me on the light ice. Trying to suck a California through a a cup with full ice . . . you've got a better shot at getting mollases to permeate a brick wall. 4. Desserts: Get a milkshake. Request it to be made with real milk and ice cream. Make it a malt. There are lots of unique flavors but I like the chocolate malt or (if I'm feeling sassy) the peanut butter. Five guys and graffiti burger are perfectly fine in Columbus, but honestly I have no idea how they survive in Swensons country. Swensons, I shall love thee better after death (there are Galley Boy's in heaven, right?).

Really dug this place. The portions are small, but that is a good thing. You can try more stuff and not feel stuffed. The tots and onion rings were good, and my peanut butter shake was delish!

A little too greasy for my tastes. However, the service is phenomenal and the Californian is great!

This is the quintessential drive in with a World Famous twist of a burger, the Galley Boy. Special sauce is worth the drive from anywhere and since there are only seven locations in and around the greater akron area if you're anywhere else a drive it will be but oh soo worth it. If I had friend come from overseas and say I want a classic american burger, I'd really take them anywhere. When they'd ask for a unique only found in one place and special as all can be, THIS IS THE PLACE!

After a long day patting down sweat soaked brows with Slurpee stained T-shirts, pulling out wedgies, and listing off all of the reasons to a "Roller coaster enthusiast" why I didn't want to ride the Top Thrill Dragster at Cedar Point. Swenson's was a welcome and tasty stop. Open till late, you just pull into the parking lot and turn on your car lights. In a matter of seconds, an adorable clean-cut high-school guy dressed in white, strolls over to the car window and asks what you want. He's patient and listens carefully as you list off everything. In a matter of minutes he's back. Big eyed, with a dashing grin, he delivers a bag full of - jalapeno poppers, a four dollar Cajun chicken burger, and a milkshake. You don't have to move a muscle...except for the paying part. Swenson's is a beautiful part of Akron. It's not cheesy. It's authentic and all together charming. (I am listening to the American Graffiti Soundtrack as I write this review.)

Last night I had the occasion to be in Akron and of course consulted Yelp for dining recommendations. Never one to pass up a drive-in burger joint, I thought Swenson's was the place to be. Shortly after I pulled up and turned on the headlights, some local youngfolk in Swenson's gear started sprinting around to cars like I had read in other reviews. Even though I knew about this practice ahead of time, I still couldn't help but crack a smile at the eagerness and intensity! As far as the food itself, I'm going to withhold judgment until I try some other things on the menu. I went with the Galley Boy since that seemed to be their signature burger, but I found it slightly offputting. Their menu mentions it has "two special sauces" on it, but I could only really identify one, which tasted and looked like a sweet BBQ sauce with onion slivers on the bottom bun. Obviously, tons of folks really go for this and enjoy the sweet tang on a burger; I just happen to not be one of them. Had I known the 'special sauce' was this, I would've tried a different burger and probably will the next time I find myself at a Swenson's in Akron. The tater tots were average. Not crispy enough and a little more greasy than one might expect from a tot. I had also been excited about the bun on the burger given what other people had said. Thought it would be akin to the buns at Culver's - buttery goodness. Alas, it had the look and taste of a bun that's just on the verge of needing to be tossed. I'd like to give this place another shot given it's reputation and would love to try something else on the menu. My mother-in-law claims Swenson's make the best milkshakes she's ever had, so that'll be in my plans next time I head south.

Forget FIve Guys. Forget Metro Burger. And don't even get me started on that troublesome Skyway... the best place in Akron to get a burger is without a doubt, Swensons. Throughout high school, Friday night found me in someone's beat up car, listening to punk music, and chowing down. The milkshakes are fantastic and you can combine almost any flavor you can think of (I'm fond of mint with chocolate.) Their California drink is also great too, which has grape juice and ginger ale. The crushed ice totally makes that drink, more like a slushy than a true soda. The burgers are terrific. I usually get a cheeseburger, since I don't care for the mayonnaise sauce on the Galley Boy, but if you enjoy mayo, then you'll love the Galley Boy. The sugar in the thin patties adds unexpected sweetness that is never over-powering. I usually always get french fries or their delicious potato teezers, potatoes deep fried with cheese and jalapeño peppers. Their grilled cheese is also surprisingly comforting. Now that I live away from Akron most of the year, certain cold winter nights I start craving a Swensons grilled cheese. Their fried mushrooms and fried zucchini are also great as well. While some of my love for Swensons can be attributed to nostalgia for my "younger" days (haha I'm only 21), the food is truly fantastic, comforting, fast, and cheap--all with the atmosphere of a classic American drive-in. What's not to love about that?

I'm really a plain and simple girl when it comes to food. Last night I had a double cheeseburger and that's it. It was really filling. Now the unfortunate thing is, they don't have much of a versatile menu. My family and I visit Akron about 1-2 times a year, and everybody has to have Swenson's. Well, I got chicken fingers because I didn't feel like a burger. Very disappointed. The food tastes dry to me and I asked for honey mustard and I never got it so. So for that I had to knock two stars off. But in the future, I will stick to the burgers, which are very filling.

I have eaten burgers all over the world. Nothing comes close to Swensons. As somewhat of a hamburger connoisseur, I feel I can safely pronounce the Swensons Galley Boy to be the best Burger in not just America, but the world. If you have no other reason to visit Ohio, go for this burger. You will not regret it.

We love Swenson's. I usually get a double cheeseburger and my DH gets a Galley Boy and we split onion rings or fries. We don't go often because we're trying to watch our red meat intake, so this would be a once-in-a-while splurge, diet-wise. But we love the place. Every time my out-of-state sister is in town, she MUST have a GB. And a Strickland's.

Besides the fact that eating dinner in my car is not my idea of a fun time... (and a rather sad tribute to American car culture..), I also was not especially impressed by the food at Swensons. It is cheap, fast food. Therefore, the quality matches. I think those who love it are somehow addicted to the grease and the "special sauce."

Yet another one of those restaurants that I can't believe haven't franchised all over the place. Awesome, and I mean awesome burgers. Better than In-n-Out and all of those other burger chains that people swear by. Reasonably priced too. Can any of you send me a Galley Boy?

Swenson's is probably my favorite fast food joint, head and shoulders above the closest equivalents here in CA (In N Out, Fatburger, etc.). I had the Galley Boy, Potato Teezers, and Blueberry milkshake, and each were so flavorful and delicious that for a split second I thought about the idea of moving to Akron, OH. If you're ANYWHERE near Cleveland/Akron area, I strongly recommend checking this place out if you want a quick bite to eat - quick service, cheap prices, and tasty food from start to finish. What more could you ask for?!? This is one of the few places where I'd give 6 stars if I could.

I just love swenson's. I don't think I'd be fat now if it weren't for all of the swenson's there was in my life when I was a kiddie. And it's cheap. So cheap. And good. Oh my god. Really, get anything you want on the menu. But actually get the Galley Boy with grilled onions. Then get something deep-fried like zuccini or mushrooms. And to make your stomach explode, go with a milkshake. Be creative and mix it up. Oh and heads up, the large is 32 oz. Seriously. PS, I love watching the boys run to my car. They straight up run. Full on sprint. They don't know that I'll tip them whether they run or they walk. If you don't tell, I won't either.

A local favorite- perfect for when you're hungry for a quick, cheap, kinda greasy but totally delicious meal. Most people go for a burger. I don't eat much meat and I still like it - I usually get a mint whip and a grilled cheese and maybe a cup of hot vegatable soup. Oh and my brother works there, so that's a plus=)

I moved out of the area years ago and I finally got back today to Swensons. It was even better than I remember. The Galley Boy of course was my meal of choice. The onion rings were perfect examples of what onion rings should be and will be my standard for all future examples. The food was quick to order and arrived within minutes. The staff is very friendly and well worth the tips (tip very well).

I have no idea how I could ever put into words how much I love, love, love Swensons. This is what a drive-in should be. Turn on your headlights for service and in no time, someone will come RUNNING out to help you. I grew up on this stuff and EVERY time I go back home, I go to Swensons for a loooong overdue cheeseburger, french fried mushrooms and maybe even a famous milkshake if I'm feeling extra dandy. The burgers are slightly sweet with a hint of coffee flavor. The cheese is gooey goodness. Even the buns have a uniqueness all their own. I swear they are sweet - how do they taste like that??? All of it put together adds up to the BEST cheeseburger I have ever or will ever have. And you know what? That's okay because I practically cry every time I go back...and I don't think I could handle much more. Oh -and if you're looking for a unique milkshake, try the pineapple. Real chunks of pineapple in a vanilla shake. Mmmm!!

I am fortunate enough to live down the street from this fabulous establishment (although my cholesterol probably isn't). There is no place, NO PLACE, with better burgers than Swenson's. Simply unbelievably juicy and sweet meat. They wrap the burgers immediately, and by the time they they get to your car, the cheese is perfectly melted. I definitely suggest the galley boy if you're looking to try something totally different. And don't leave without getting a milkshake (pineapple is my fave) or a delicious phosphate! I think I'm running out there for dinner now . . .

So after yelping things to do/see/eat in and around Akron during the six weeks I spent there this fall for work, I didn't find a whole lot... but Swenson's name seemed to stick out so during my last week I made a point of tracking one down. Based on the devoted "wish I never moved out of Northeast Ohio because I suffer constant Swensons cravings" postings that I found here and otherwise, I think my expectations were set pretty high. That might have been the problem... because although my Galley Boy burger and side of fried zuccchini were decent, they just didn't live up to what I had hoped for. The whole guy-coming-to-your-car-window part was cool and all, but it sort of put me on the spot when ordering (I didn't have enough of a chance to review the menu covering the side of the building, and forgot that per other reviewers I was supposed to ask for mine with onions and Coney sauce). And after he left, it took him a looooong time to finally return with my food. The whole "hanging tray from the side of your car window" and eating in the parking lot thing just didn't appeal to me no matter how novel, so I skipped that part and went with the only other option available, taking it to go and waiting til I got back to the hotel. Which I admit may have resulted in a less than optimal hot-and-fresh factor which may have tainted my opinion a bit, too. It was still pretty good, but not spectacular and craving-inducing. But with the lack of other local must-try options I'd still recommend seeking out Swenson's if you are in the Akron area, just for the experience.

Why can't Swenson's expand to the west coast? In-N-Out has a lot of fans, I know, but it is NOT Swenson's. Everytime I visit Akron, gotta stop at Swenson's for a cheeseburger and PB milkshake. The pineapple shake is also delicious. And addictive. Also the best fried mushrooms anywhere. Prices are inexpensive-the cheeseburger is under $2. Service is quick and attentive-the guys circle the perimeter constantly checking to ensure all cars are waited upon. Summertime hours are open late until 1am. Just put some here in the Bay Area please please please.

I am a native Akronite, now Washington D.C. transplant. I miss Swenson's sooo badly. Five Guys pales in comparison to the sweet, succulent, fried to perfection beef patties served on grilled (yet never dried out) bun. Other things on the menu such as fries and chicken fingers are only so-so... But who goes for that?! Everyone in the know, KNOWS that the hamburg is a must. Finish up with a shake, and it is a little piece of heaven. I loved introducing Swensons to my Cleveland friends who usually sit there clueless that they need to swtich their lights on to get service at a drive-in. This is TRUE vintage rust-belt america. Go here in the summer with your top down on your ford mustang or in a dodge charger, complete with Goodyear tires- the old local guys are sure to comment from their cars. How I miss this, it's not just food to an Akronite, this is a vital childhood experience!

My favorite burger on planet Earth, period. Simply on a completely different plane from In-N-Out, Five Guys and the endless other contenders I've enjoyed. I live in Chicago now, but hit Swenson's for a Galley Boy (or two), onion rings and a chocolate malt whenever I make it home. I hope they'll someday allow me to open their first Chicago location. Honestly, this place could go national in a heartbeat.

This is simply fast food (relatively) that's good food. The burgers are very, very good. I must say though, it was a bit off-putting when the car hop threw open the door with no warning and tried to mount some tray device that looked like it was designed by a truly mad inventor on the inside of the door. Thank god I don't drive an expensive car, I might have had a conniption. Anyway, once that process was aborted I did get to enjoy a great burger and milkshake along with some so-so onion rings. Swensons will definitely be a must do when I pass through Ohio again.

Swenson's definitely has the best burgers in Akron. I highly recommend the Galley Boy & California drink

Having just been in Las Vegas with my boyfriend and dining at In n Out burger, we decided to do a little friendly burger challenge against Swenson's. In my mind the bar was set quite high because I don't think anything is better than In n Out. Kudos to Swenson's for their toasted bun. Nice touch. But I found the cheese to have a weird flavor. The BBQ sauce and thousand-island style sauce was good on the burger. I wouldn't say it's the best fast food burger but it's better than McDonalds and Burger King and maybe slightly better than Five Guys but in no way does it hold a candle to In n Out. Great and fast service.

Swenson's has been an absolute favorite of mine since I was a little girl. I don't know what it is about Swenson's cheeseburgers... but good-God they know how to make a good one. I moved to Pittsburgh and missed Swenson's with a passion, remembering to grab a quick Galley Boy anytime I was in town. I've since moved to Huron, OH (near Cedar Point) and crave Swenson's everytime I eat a cheeseburger. Anytime I'm home, I make it a point to stop and smell the Galley Boys...

You can't go wrong with Swenson's! I have a list of places I *must* visit every time I am in Akron or I go through extreme withdrawal and Swenson's is on the top of this list. When I'm there I order a cheeseburger with pickles and mustard, the onion rings (which are divine!) and a California. Sometimes I get a shake, which brings me back to 1987 immediately. I knew I was a "grown-up" when I started driving there myself - with my parents as passengers! I miss this place, we just don't have a great drive in like this in the DC area. When I go there now (with Virginia plates and an Akron Zips sticker on my car) I look around the parking lot and it's almost always out-of-state plates. Probably all Northeastern Ohio transplants that need a fix! Get a burger - you'll totally understand.

This is a place I always have to visit when I am home. A classic drive up restaurant. The waiters are always quick to get your order (literally running) and the food is great, just bad for you, lots of grease! I love the chicken fingers but the Galley Boy is the reason to go here, some of the best burgers. The milkshakes are also a must have!

Amanda G.
Delicious! Any season, Swenson's is the place to go! Call in your order, and it will be ready, or pull up and take your time. Fun drive-in atmosphere (and hot guys sometimes!) and delicious diner/drive-in style food. Unique yet classic menu with a variety of speciality sodas and shakes! Great for the whole family!

When I went to Kent State I would eat at Swensons in Stow. Best fast food style hamburgers around. I heard that the secret ingredient is brown sugar in the ground beef. It explains the sweet taste. They butter and toast the buns. Damn good. The other things on the menu are alright, but don't even bother because the burgers are really all you need. It is also entertaining to see the servers haul ass to get you the food.
The burgers this place makes are undeniably awesome. The best fast-food style burgers I've ever had, period. I don't know how McDonald's, Burger King, and the rest can stay in business with Swenson's in town. Whoever still goes to one of those places when they are so lucky to have a Swenson's nearby.....I don't get it. It's been almost 5 years now since I've lived near Akron, and I miss those Gally Boys they make there. I haven't had anything like it anywhere else. Whenever I'm on the road now driving through Ohio, I always make an extra loop through Akron just to go here, no matter how many hours it adds to my trip....it's worth it.

No doubt. Worth the drive to Akron. The "Galley Boy" burger cant be beat. I dont know how they do it, but it is just fantastic. Munchies+Swensons= BLISS

The absolute best cheeseburgers in the world! Every time I come home to visit my parents, they have Swensons waiting on the counter for me. I take all out of towners to this place to let them know Akron isn't half bad. Service is fabulous, and make sure to get a California or Florida drink with your burger.

I like to eat as much as possible during my birthday weekend, and this year I did myself proud! :) On Monday we were in the Akron vicinity so we made the now annual birthday stop at Swensons. Now before you start lecturing me on the evil's of fast food, the downfall of America, trans fats, obesity, etc.... I know. I am well aware. I am not a fast food fan, however I allow myself this rare indulgence. Swensons is fun... a throwback. Waited on while never having to leave your car, oh yes, I think it is fabulous! We both ordered Galley Boys, which are super tasty because they have both barbeque and tartar sauce on them. I never would have thought it a great combo, but it really is. We also got fries, which come out steaming hot and would probably have still been hot had we let them sit in the car all the way back to Cleveland.... and Potato Puffs. Potato Puffs are fried potato goodness, stuffed with cheese and jalapeno. I got a chocolate shake, Jason got peanut butter. The peanut butter shake was the winner -- super flavorful and yummy. I also hold to the statement that the young men working at Swensons are the hardest working guys in fast food. They literally are running back and forth, car to car, constant movement, and all while smiling and speaking with the utmost politeness. They deserve more than the normal tip, double it, seriously. :)

I've been going to Swenson's since the early 80's and its still as good as it gets.....best burger period.

I have to admit it; I am hip on hamburgers...cheeseburgers to be exact. Maybe it is from growing up in the mid-west, maybe it is the fact that being from Ohio, hamburger is a major food stable, or maybe it is the fact that when well prepared the combination of flavorful ground beef, fresh bread rolls, Heinz ketchup, extra pickles (and occasionally grilled onions, spicy mustard, and sliced beefsteak tomato) is just a perfect pairing...whatever the case, during my recent first visit to Swenson's in Akron, childhood memories of great family backyard BBQs collided with an adult passion for great food -- in a word, the experience was awesome. Arriving at the drive-in, I was confronted with a group of cars circling a mostly nondescript, worn, one story brown-red building. Nearly immediately I watched several teenagers with Swenson's T-shirts racing around the building servicing customers with their orders, taking orders, and really exuding an impressive amount of energy. As quickly as I turned on my headlights (the key message that you are ready to order, need some assistance, or are ready to pay) and rolled down the window of my rental car, a Swenson's teen was there asking how they could help with a huge smile. This defines fast food, let me tell you. As there were two of us I placed an order for three cheeseburgers, an order of onion rings, one California, and one Florida. In a matter of a few minutes, certainly no more than maybe five, a different person returned with our order, placing it on our window with clips, and repeating everything back to make sure it was correct. It was spot on. Starting with a sip of each the California and Florida, they were refreshing and different. Basically the California is a sweet, tasty grape soda; slightly less burn that a standard grape soda. The Florida, similar to the California, is a sweet, bold tasting orange soda. Both seemed custom made by Swenson's and made for a great start. The real treasure however was found after unwrapping the warm, white parchment paper surrounding the fresh Swenson's cheeseburgers. The temperature was just perfect and the ratio of meet to bread was very good. This on quick observation is not a 'meaty' burger. The menu offers selections for carpoolers seeking more meat with choices of a Double Cheeseburger, Quarter Pounder Plus, and even a Half Pounder Plus -- note the 'Plus' options are served not on their standard bun but a toasted sesame seed bun and this is an important distinction. Why? Well the standard Swenson's bun is a fresh baked, sliced sweet bread roll that in my opinion is without doubt the best, freshest hamburger bun I have ever tasted. The flavor is similar to products from King's Hawaiian Bakery, only being lightly toasted. The meat also was cooked just right and with a very unique flavor and great texture which was not prominent with any one spice. Swenson claims, in their own words, to "...use a precise selection of quality cuts of beef and a secret formula to create a very special, always-fresh hamburger blend." The taste upholds this lore. They also grind their beef fresh daily at their own facility and I think that is a very powerful statement about the level of commitment to quality that they serve to customers day in and day out. This combination of fresh ground beef and homemade bread is flawless. Yes, in the end, it will remain for some, 'just a hamburger,' but rest assured this is a hamburger like no others, it is indeed very special. In conclusion, the fresh made drinks and exceptional cheeseburgers made the experience. The onion rings, which I practically forgot that we ordered after the first bite of the cheeseburger, were just OK. The rings tended toward a strong likelihood of being previously frozen, but certainly they lacked that bite of being fresh made nor exceptional or unique by any measure. This however did not subtract from my experience, I just take it as being obsessed in focus on the one thing they do best, and that's a great decision -- I mean after all, I did not drive to this out of the way hamburger shop for the onion rings. Swenson is for me, the best cheeseburger that I have tasted. I have even caught myself contemplating the notion of relocating to Akron, just to be close to Swenson's and these amazing drive-ins. Swenson's rates a perfect five starts!

one of the BEST burgers i've ever had, even counting west and east coasts! the fried mushrooms were a nice plus also. i'm back home on the west coast now, and i miss the galley boy like no other!

The best burger hands down. The meat is the best, the cheese is the best and the bun is unbelievable. If you like butter - order "Butter plus". My parents grew up there and we visited Akron every year when I was growing up. We use to order a bunch, freeze them and take them back to FL to enjoy for weeks. When I visit Akron now, I eat there one to two times per day. And yes, I am on cholesterol meds.

OK...so I grew up on the west coast and I am a loyal in n out fan. My friends from OH think that Swensons is better..even though I disagree, Swensons is still an awesome place to get burgers out in the midwest. I usually just get 3 double cheeseburgers with ketchup...I know its boring but trust me, those burgers are sweet. Then if you have the onion rings on the side...oooooo. Makes for a good meal during the summer when you dont have to stink up your car since they can hang the tray from your car window.

If you want a delicious, greasy, fast burger, this is the place. Forget Burger King, Wendys or Mcdonalds. This is not health food, and this is not a pub burger...it's a slab of meat with a bun & special sauce wrapped in some paper. Hmmmm....doesn't sound great when I say it, but man, these burgers are good. This is the original Swenson's (Cuyahoga Ave.) and everything tastes better here for some reason. Maybe the whole kitchen is "seasoned" from 30 years of grease. It's one of the few remaining original drive-ins in the area. If you like a good burger, you won't be disappointed here.

(3)John C.
Went with my usual order two galley boys and an order of fried mushrooms. Awesome as usual and the service was fast.
(5)Heath D.
(5)Gary I.
Swensons is truly an Akron tradition. Whenever I get back to Akron Swensons is one of my first stops. The Galley boy is a truly unique burger that I crave when I've gone too long without.
(5)Scott C.
Always excellent customer service. I always look forward to going there. Great price point for burgers and seems to be as fresh as fast food gets.
(5)Eric L.
I'm a fan.
(3)Sarah F.
(5)Nick D.
(5)Lauren B.
(4)Josh L.
(3)Mark N.
We have been going here for years. The burgers are good, great shakes, fries, fried mushrooms, and onion rings. A nice nostalgic feel as the servers run out to your car and if you "dine in" they attach the tray to your car. Better than commercial fast food places.
(4)David C.
Whenever I drive by a Swenson's, I must stop for a galley boy if I'm hungry or not! And a very good milk shake as well. The burger is my favorite and the fast young curb servers are always polite. My favorite is the original store on Cuy Falls Ave.
(5)Kimberly E.
Can't go wrong with Swenson's! Awesome burgers & shakes! Also try the fried mushrooms & potato teasers! Food is done perfectly every time the same for years & years! There's a reason they've been around forever!
(5)Amanda E.
Ohhhh my gosh my fav burger joint since I was a little munchkin love the burgers and the shakes always a great time
(5)Gary F.
(3)Diana M.
(5)Briana B.

Best burgers anywhere ever.
(5)Zack H.
(5)Crystal D.
Best burgers, onion rings and shakes ever! I've been to several burger joints but none of them can rival Swensons. Now, that I've relocated to DC, I make a mad dash for swensons everytime I come home to Akron to visit family.
(5)Michael M.
(4)Chris S.
(5)Nicole S.
My husband is from Akron and always talks about this place. On a recent trip up there I knew I had to try this place. SO GOOD! We got the Galley Boy, I wasn't disappointed. I'll be going back! The only thing I didn't like? No covers on the drinks? That's a mess waiting to happen!
(5)Gahan A.
(5)Manuela T.
Deeee-licous! Tried it for the first time, I had a cheeseburger and fries, my husband the galley boy and the potato teasers. Everything was awesome! Definitely coming back!
(5)Stephanie M.
I grew up in Akron and somehow never ate here! So on my last trip home, it was a must stop. Now I think I need a Galley Boy and poppers every trip. Delicious, cheap, and the service to the car was awesome. An Ohio staple.
(5)Marcia W.
(5)Marlene W.
Swensons has great food! I always get their Galley Boy - the best burger I can think of! They also have wonderful fried mushrooms and very tasty milkshakes! You can't go wrong with Swensons and I have heard so many people from out of town make a point to visit Swensons when they're in the area. YUM!
(5)Muhammed B.
(5)Tammy Jo F.
(3)Andy F.
Great burgers, fries, and onion rings. The service is also great. I'd kinda like to be able to go inside to eat, but that's not their concept. Overall, Swensons has great high-quality burgers at great prices. When visiting Akron, you need to stop at Swensons a time or two.
(4)Mark N.
locals rave about fhis place, the hamburger meat seems to have a lot of sugar added, not a fan of the sweetness. huge variety of shakes to choose from including some rather unusual flavors. they come to your car to take your order and the expectation seems to be that you will eat in your car also. the jalapeño cheese fried potato ellipsoids are pretty good.
(3)Camille S.
#Ohio
(5)David K.
(4)Charla C.
This place has the best burgers on planet earth! They have the best milkshakes, the best onion rings and the best jalapeño poppers! If you haven't tried Swensons, you haven't lived. They really need to consider franchising and they would put every other restaurant that sells burgers out of business!
(5)Lisa L.
(5)Houston J H.
Peanut butter shakes are the bomb. The jalapeño potato teasers are awesome. Great burgers. Fast service. We love to take the kids here.
(5)Nancy D.
What a gem summit county has in Swensons. Anyone who has gone to akron u or KSU and moves back home go on and on how much they miss swensons. Service always good the sprinting to car to take order and then quickly bring out. From galley boy to tots and chocolate coke..
(4)Bobby B.

(5)David M.
My family agrees that if we ever find ourselves on death row we will order Swenson's Galleyboys as our last meal.
(5)Caleb T.
California? Guys? We may have damn tasty burgers, but we're kinda ... boring. Some greasy dive over here needs to make a delicious burger with more than the basics and call it their main fare ... and fast!
(5)Mike B.
(5)Cissy D.
Curb service ! All the waiters run to and from your cars! I love the banana and hot fudge shake! The cheeseburgers are the bomb! They have something for everyone here!
(5)David J.
(5)Matt S.
All of the Swenson's in general are a 5 star, relative to what they are, a quick burger joint. I always get the Galley Boy, which is delicious. A great place to drive up and get a quick burger, always quick and friendly service.
(5)Bryan K.
(4)Nick M.
Everyone seems spraked put on methamphetamine here. Got WAY too much energy from the waiters. If you want crystal this is the place baby
(5)Steven S.
(4)Richard R.
Amazing service!! Just had my 1st Galley Boy sandwich. The waiters literally run to your car and meet you prior to you pulling into the parking spot. Something you really have to witness. There's no slacking here! Well done Swensons!!!
(5)Lindsey K.
(5)Aaron K.
(5)A N.
Rated #1 so much that you have to go. I'm a vegetarian and appreciate that they have options for me. They're famous for their burgers and milk shakes.
(5)Elizabeth T.
(5)mentirosa j.
(4)Tom B.

(5)Lannetta K.
This is a hometown favorite. We always stop by while we were in town. This past visit our order was totally screwed up even though the runner repeated it back twice. That's ok we will go again!
(3)Stacie C.
(5)K N.
Best burgers in town! They have amazing milkshakes too. Service is always fast and friendly
(5)Amanda E.
Swenson's Galley Boy is where it's at. It's not like any burger you've had before and it's delicious.
(5)Charmaine B.
The burgers are crack!! Your not a true akoner if have not at least tried a galley boy. Every time I have out of town guest I take them to here and they love it!!
(5)Lindsey M.
(5)Tiffany Y.

(5)Allison C.

Always stop by when we visit Akron. Great service and food. Especially love the milk shakes.
(5)Jane T.
(5)Mark B.
How Jimmy Buffet didn't list Swenson's in his top 10 cheeseburgers is beyond me (he picked Skyway... seriously?) Swenson's is it if you want a great burger, drive-in style.
(5)Matt E.
(5)Sarah K.
(5)George Y.

Headlights mean you are ready to order. and DON'T beep your horn either! ha!
(4)Matthew M.
(5)Beth R.
(5)Ann S.
(1)Rita S.
(3)Christina K.
Swenson's in a NE Ohio classic. Whenever I am in town, I visit Swenson's. I love their burgers and their fried mushrooms with ranch.
(4)Justin H.
(4)Cameron C.
(5)Sausage D.
I am going to make this simple. The Galley Boy is the greatest burger on earth. If you are anywhere near the state of Ohio, get it, enjoy it, and remember it forever.
(5)Nick G.
(5)I am not very often in Ohio, but when I am it's usually Akron and within the first 24 hours of arriving I HAVE to go to Swenson's and get their double cheeseburger, tater tots and a chocolate malt (with extra malt I've learned).

(5)Mare R.
Really dug this place. The portions are small, but that is a good thing. You can try more stuff and not feel stuffed. The tots and onion rings were good, and my peanut butter shake was delish!
(5)Hanna M.
A little too greasy for my tastes. However, the service is phenomenal and the Californian is great!
(3)Ted M.
(5)Sean D.
A Must see if your ever around Akron .. Truly a Tradition.. Great Burgers .. A Amazing Staff that will make you tired just watching them work.. . They don't leave nothing untouched when it comes to tradition . A Real Drive In Experience .
(5)Megan M.
Greatest. Burger. Ever. Cash only, and they won't do separate checks, so come prepared!

(5)Alisha M.
(3)Brian S.
Yep. The best.
(5)Scott G.
The best burgers in the world. First place I go to when coming to Akron.
(5)Jenny H.
(5)Jan P.
(5)Shaheen S.
(3)Yod S.
Yet another one of those restaurants that I can't believe haven't franchised all over the place. Awesome, and I mean awesome burgers. Better than In-n-Out and all of those other burger chains that people swear by. Reasonably priced too. Can any of you send me a Galley Boy?
(5)Michael P.
(5)Christopher C.
(5)erin s.
(4)Ken M.
(5)Rhonda C.
Mmmm!!
(5)Kate L.
I think I'm running out there for dinner now . . .
(5)Lauren R.
(3)Grace T.
(5)Sheena Z.
Definitely agree that these are the best burgers in America! :)
(5)Becky F.
(5)Scott H.
(5)Pete W.
(4)Stephanie U.
Swenson's definitely has the best burgers in Akron. I highly recommend the Galley Boy & California drink
(4)Jen M.
(3)Bill B.
Stopped here on our way up to Minnesota. Service is great, food is incredibly cheap. Fast food that actually taste like real food.
(5)Big B.
Galley Boy Burger forever!
(4)Tracee M.
(5)Eli S.
Galley boy, Onion Rings and a Banana Milkshake. Get it, love it, get it again.

When my fiancée visited family in OH, she FedEx six double cheeseburgs with fried mushrooms (she's a keeper). Fer-real. It is that good. Proud to be a 2nd generation, lifetime customer.
