This is my go-to place in NE Ohio. I still haven't found a place that tops this one. The fish is always fresh, considering it's Ohio. Service is great, staff is friendly. My husband and I were regulars here while we were still living in Akron. We come home once/twice a year now and they still remember us. We like to get either the sushi dinner regular (comes with three regular rolls + 2 soups and salads) and order some specialty rolls along with it. Our favorite specialty rolls: Fire Maki: spicy salmon with tempura crunchie on the inside topped with salmon, wasabi fish roe, a thin slice of lemon and topped with a drizzle of sriracha sauce. My husband was the first to try it and when I heard about what was in the roll, I thought it was weird...I mean, lemon? But after one bite, I was floored. This roll is life changing. I would come here just for the Fire Maki alone! BPP: salmon, tuna & hamachi (yellowtail) with tempura crunchies topped with avocado, black sesame seeds, eel sauce and sriracha sauce. Sweet 'n spicy and delicious. This is my second favorite roll. Magic Stone: I always forget what is in this...but on top there is some lightly seared fish. It's pressed into square pieces instead of rolled. Amazing. Carmine: spicy scallops and fish cake? Yes please. Their regular rolls are very good, too, along with their sashimi and nigiri. Miso soup is your standard miso and their salad is served with your typical ginger-carrot dressing that I love.

Hands down best sushi and sashimi in the area. A visit to Sakura will not disappoint.

This was decent sushi but far from the best ever. Had the new moon and butterfly rolls. Would recommend the new moon but not butterfly. So if you want decent sushi you should not be afraid to come here.

Sakura is reputed to be the best sushi restaurant in Akron. I can't comment on other sushi places around here, but I would not go out of my way to eat here if you aren't nearby. While decent overall, a few notable flaws hold it back. My main problem was that the sushi was ugly in appearance. I've seen the sushi I make at home, and the sushi prepared by (most) restaurants, and there's a clear difference. Unfortunately, Sakura's sushi resembles the former more than the latter. The rolls were misshapen, lumpy, and uneven (some parts much smaller than others). To their credit, the taste was pretty good. But if you get fresh ingredients and buy a $2 rolling mat, you could make something similar at home. A restaurant should be able to do better, and I'm not sure this one does. My girlfriend also commented that the yellowtail (hamachi) sashimi was not impressive.

Hands down, the best Sushi in the area. Definitely worth the wait. Plenty of rolls to choose from. Jalapeño Yummy is delicious! Language barrier sometimes when it comes to order a cocktail. Proceed with caution. Still my favorite place for sushi!!!

I'm originally from Akron, and whenever I come home, the first place I go is Sakura. I have been coming here with my family for over five years, and though things have changed (mostly for the better), it is still some of the best sushi I have ever had. Ever. I've eaten a lot of sushi in my life, and all over the place (New York, San Francisco, London, and Paris come to mind). Little old Sakura in little old Akron, Ohio is definitely on par with (if not better) than some of the sushi in these bigger, more cosmopolitan cities. Start with the seaweed salad! It's light, and perfectly salty, with a few sesame seeds tossed on top. The miso soup is also a favorite of my family's. After you've gotten your appetizers out of the way, just start ordering what sounds good to you. It probably is good (and so FRESH!). My go-to's are spicy crab rolls--which, on Mondays, are 50% off. Off the special roll menu, I always (literally. always) order the Eel Dragon Roll and the Red Dragon Roll. I definitely recommend those. What's stopping me from writing a 5 star review? I've never tried the non-sushi items offered at Sakura, and I haven't heard the best opinions of them, either. But what is perhaps my biggest gripe with Sakura is that, as they've gotten more and more popular and expanded the space and operations, they've lost a lot of authenticity and that personal touch that they once had. I know it's extremely difficult to maintain that feel once a restaurant starts to grow and wants to serve as many people as possible, and Sakura just hasn't found its new groove yet.

I always visit this place when I visit home because it's probably the best sushi place in Montrose. Great atmosphere, great service, great food. It's crazy to me how fresh their fish tastes for being in the middle of Northeast Ohio. I highly recommend any of their sashimi, and if you're going with someone else, I'd also recommend their sushi boats. The variety is crazy and everything will be extremely delicious.

My partner and I stopped in here for lunch after not having visited for several years. They have added a small patio dining area, great for when the weather permits. Their lunch selections were very good - everything from sushi rolls, bento boxes to lunch portions for the dinner entrees from their kitchen. I ordered their Pork Shogayaki lunch special which was served with a small salad (ginger dressing) and soup. The portion they gave me was very generous and quite tasty. I also tried their Tako Salad (Octupus) which was also very good. Our server informed us that they had a special that day which was 1/2 off their sushi rolls so my partner ordered a Spicy Tuna Roll and an Eel Roll. Both were delicious and tasted fresh. When the bill came, we found that they charged us full price for the Eel Roll so we asked the server why. He went to check and came back to tell us that unfortunately, they removed the Eel Roll from the "specials". We were not pleased but did not make a big deal out of it. Overall, I would give their food 4 stars but the service only 2 stars, so I averaged it out and gave them 3 in this review. I will go back and try other items on the menu and perhaps we might even get a better server next time.

Great sushi in Akron OH?? You bet. Definitely worthy of 5-Stars. You wouldn't know it from the location, which is in a mini-strip mall, and rather hidden if you don't know what you are looking for. The inside is fairly small, but it is nice and clean. The staff is very friendly, and very attentive. And the food.... Terrific. I went with 4 business colleagues, and we had a 'group share' of our rolls and food, which was very fun, and gave me a great sense of their many offerings. My favorites were: Happy Family roll, Spider Dragon, Red Dragon, and Green Dragon. I would subtract 1/2 a Star for location, but definitely 5 stars for the food and very reasonable prices. I haven't ventured to any other sushi places when here on business, but why would I? This place is great!

4- I met with a bunch of Akron friends for Maki Monday at Sakura because I hadn't been to the restaurant in years. While I was pleasantly surprised by the fish (I remember when the tuna at Sakura tasted like freezer burn), I just can't give truly high marks to a sushi restaurant that uses the wrong type of rice. That's really all it takes for good sushi--fresh fish and quality short-grain rice. Short-grain's not just stickier, but also retains more moisture. So, although I like the idea of downing cups of sake with my sushi, I don't want to do it because a maki roll's catching in my throat--this, and the fact, that our server knew next to nothing about sake, and the selection was kind of pitiful. So sorry to my friend Eric, still have to go with Pacific East in Coventry (even though they overkill their sushi with sauce and fish) as the best sushi in NEO. But I'd definitely go back to Sakura for Maki Monday again. Good deal.

I don't eat fish, so if sushi is what you're after, don't bother clicking the "useful" button on this one! Some co-workers and I often visit Sakura for lunch. It can at times get busy, but we've never had a wait to get a table. The restaurant was remodeled last year which makes it nice and roomy. My typical order at this place was usually the chicken katsu. It was delicious! I'm trying to go meat free these days (hey don't judge me!) so it might be vegetable tempura for me on my next visit.

I sit at the bar. The menu has a nice array of choices. I really liked the BPP roll. Salmon, avocado, and some other good stuff. They don't skimp on portions and their service is just right. I found my favorite spot in Akron!

This is a GREAT place for a lunch meeting, they're never busy during the day and have a small patio you can sit on. Evening hours however can see the place get a little more crowded. Good sushi, solid service staff, but priced slightly higher than other local options. (If you work in the area try calling ahead for take out)

Yeah this place is the real deal. I sat at the sushi bar and watched as roll after roll was made and plated before me. EVERY one of them looked awesome. I kept asking what each roll was. I travel all over the world and eat sushi as much as I can and this is easily a top 10 joint. The fish I had was very fresh and melted in the mouth. The nigiri had decent sized pieces- fish running off the end of the rice. The rolls were about as round as an oreo cookie - large, but still fits in the mouth. The rolls also didn't fall apart, not a single piece. I had 8 pieces of nigiri, two rolls, miso soup and a large beer and my bill was $52. The prices were average. I was surprised at the end of my meal with half a chilled orange already peeled. Even that was awesome and a sweet treat to finish the dinner. I come to Akron every year and I will be coming here every trip from now on.

While in Akron, I Yelp'd to find a place to eat nearby my hotel. Sakura came up so I gave it a shot. I sat at the sushi bar and ordered a large Sapporo and the Sushi Deluxe dinner, which has 9 pieces of chef's-choice sushi, tuna roll, miso soup, and salad, ($19.95). The sushi chef handed me a small dish with shredded crab and cucumber in it and it was excellent and most appreciated! Soon after that, the salad and soup came out together. A couple of minutes later, the main plate with sushi came out, so I had all these plates in front of me and I hadn't finished any of them. Ideally, it would've been great to hold back on the sushi plate until the appetizers were done, but that's okay. The sushi was very good! I was surprised at how large the slices of fish were! Tuna (2), Salmon (2), Yellowtail, Albacore, Red Snapper, Shrimp, Eel, and a Tuna roll. With the exception of the Red Snapper, which was quite tough, everything was really good. I recommend Sakura!

Best sushi in Akron! Seriously. This place is great. My favorite rolls are the Chop Chop, Spicy Scallop Roll, Tempura Shrimp roll and the Crazy Roll. As far as hot food is concerned, the Yaki Udon with Shrimp and the Japanese Fried Rice are incredibly good. The service here has been spot on for my wife, son and I and have never heard anyone else complain either. They've recently expanded their space so now there is even more room and less wait.

The best sushi in Akron (including Cleveland area in my opinion). Less expensive than other sushi places in the area. Their maki (rolls) are very creative including: - spicy craw fish roll - yellow tail & jalapeno rolls - lobster tail tempura with spicy sauce roll - spicy salmon roll with thin-sliced lime - soft shell crab roll Their basic items, like, California roll, regular nigiri and sashimi are good, too. Chirashi (assorted raw fish over a bowl of sushi rice) with free soup and salad is also a good deal. They always have special deals ($1 sushi and 1/2 priced sushi) that rotate every week. Please check with the local media or call them for details. Very friendly service but some staff members are not native English-speakers, so speak slowly when you order.

I had been totally in the dark when it came to good sushi before my friends took me here. The small town in Northern Michigan where I grew up had no good options for sushi; your choice was either gas station sushi or no sushi. What a sad existence I used to live! My absolute favorite was the Island Delight. It is salmon, avocado, and spicy crab with kiwi and cream cheese and mango sauce on top! Woah. I was super skeptical when my friend recommended it to me. Fruit and raw fish? But I quickly saw the light when it arrived and I started eating. I even ordered a second roll to go for when I got home and wanted to relive once more the deliciousness. We also got the Tuna Carnival which said it came with "Crispy Chips," and it was kinda hilarious that it just had some Nacho Doritos on top! Haha! And it was great.

So my friend told me that on their website it says the regular maki rolls are $4 on Mondays. Score! Wait, not so fast! SOME of the regular maki rolls are $4. Not all of them. Well, we didn't know this until I went to pick up the sushi. Also, the price given over the phone when ordering was totally different from the price charged at pick up. The price quoted was $23 but I was charged $37. I tried to argue the point with the lady at the register that it was very confusing to know which rolls are the $4 rolls and which aren't since they're mixed together on the menu. I decided I was too hungry to argue further but this price confusion situation and her attitude will keep me from coming back. There's perfectly good sushi elsewhere in our area. The sushi was actually really good! We ordered an Alaska roll, Tempura asparagus roll, Philadelphia roll, Orange roll, Yellowtail roll (smaller than the other rolls), Spicy tuna roll, and a Spicy crab roll. All were good except for the asparagus roll. Overall, yummy sushi, bad service. Also, not their fault, but there was a guy in the parking lot following people around begging for money. Hate that! Ask for money, sure, but don't follow me around. I'm going to kick you in the gonads as hard as I can!

This place represents two words I rarely put together, cheap and good. They have a weird way of using substandard ingredients in a way that still tastes well... Pretty damn good. Normally I'd spit out a whiskey sour made with sour mix but somehow it still tasted good. Their sushi is not the best in the world but it's worth a trip.

I was dining alone (on business) and was craving sushi. Sakura was located nearby in a strip mall, so I gave it a try. The Chirashi (sushi on a bed of rice) was outstanding, plentiful and a good price. The Unagi was awesome. The sushi chefs were friendly and entertaining. The wait staff seemed a little disinterested, but overall, I strongly recommend this place.

  • Morgan B.

Sushi and sashimi options were pretty good- sashimi was a generous size for the price. I cannot recommend the udon noodle however- ingredients were poor quality and the broth was pitiful....I've had better broth in instant noodles. For a higher end restaurant charging almost $15 for a bowl of noodles, I certainly expected better. I might come here for sushi again, but I wouldn't go out of my way to recommend to others.

Omg sushi was so good. We got edamame and yokaturi to start with some hot sake and everything was great. Then we got 3 special rolls and 2 orders of nigiri. Amazing food. Service was superb also.

Great service, great atmosphere, reasonable prices..... Although these three points are very important considerations when choosing a place to dine these are somewhat expected and I came here expecting a little more especially when the main course is going to be sushi. While enjoying a cold imported beer while looking over the menu I was having difficulty deciding on one particular item because nothing here really stood out and that was a little disappointing. Since the weather out was a little chilly and rainy I decided to start off with a hot cup of wonton soup I figured this was a great way to shake off the chill. My server Kelsey was very friendly and attentive I informed her upfront that I was going to try a few dishes and I wanted to keep the menu and order one or two items at a time so most of my choices were either starters or from the appetizer selections and she was fine with that, she provided excellent service throughout my entire visit allowing plenty of time between courses. Now to me wonton soup is a pretty simple dish usually consist of pre-prepared wontons in a broth with a few scallions thrown in served hot. Although the broth was flavorful it was served barely luke warm and the wontons were just okay I ate about half and decided to move on to something more appealing and was hoping this wasn't going to be an example of how the evening was going to be, at this point I was somewhat disappointed. My second choice was the spicy tuna roll the portion was small the quality was poor in my opinion it was a blend of tuna and jalapeño stuffed in rice I was expecting so much more the description wasn't close to what I was served. It wasn't a fresh piece of tuna but rather a mush, after my first taste I think I actually said yuck out loud. My next course was the shrimp asparagus which consisted of four very small shrimp speared with a thin stalk of asparagus nothing I would order again, still hungry I decided on a soft shell crab it was underwhelming to say the least and very small I guess I was expecting a large spider like Crustacean fried in tempura batter nope it was sautéed I think and four small bites it didn't seem to be fresh and was very chewy. If you're not looking for great this place may be okay but it's just not my thing or what I was expecting from this place after reading the reviews. I wish I had found a much more expensive place to eat what I want which was sushi. I don't see myself returning.

Dear Chris, I think deep down that it was your fault I couldn't see DragonBall Z today at 7. It was sold out. I could have gotten there sooner if it weren't from dying of dehydration after you took my glass as a pre-bus and not a refill. I'm giving 3 stars because the delicious sushi and great prices (besides the 3 dollar salad that came in a thimble) saved the score. But Chris needs to pick up the pace. Sincerely, The guy in the fall out shirt.

Best Asian in Akron thus far. Comparing their sushi to House of Hunan, Enso, Wasabi and Pad Thai... This place is much better. I like their udon soups as well. Highly recommend for a delicious meal.

I will try to keep emotion out of my review and stick to facts as much as possible. I'm new to the Akron area so I looked Sakura up by searching for Akron Sushi. Their website seemed nice and the menu online stated this entree(love boat for 4) was $100. $25 per person for sushi seemed more than fair. I called this restaurant to place an order for a love boat for 4 for my family and I. What I recall of the conversation is that I placed my order, provided my name and phone number and received an estimated time for pickup. I received a quoted time of 25 minutes and I informed the associate that I would be picking up in 1 hour to which I received a reply of "awesome". I do not recall the price I was quoted over the phone but I do remember being quoted a price and said thank you. When I arrived for pickup I was greeted by two younger women-I believe between 17-21 years old. I provided my name and they asked if I was there to pickup the love boat to which I replied yes. They provided me a total of $109.95 to which I asked was there a surcharge. I was told that is the price. I stated that I saw the menu online an hour ago and it stated $100. The associate stated "it's only $10". I asked if there was anything they could do to assist with the pricing and the associate that made the $10 comment stormed off frustrated and stated she was getting a manager. The manager came out and introduced herself. She stated that she was sorry about the confusion but the price was $109.95 and she quoted me that over the phone. Again-I don't recall the amount I was quoted. I repeated that the price that was advertised on the website was $100 and that is the price that I wanted to pay. The manager drew a line in the sand and stated that she knew she quoted me the correct price and she couldn't do anything for me. To that I replied that I would be forced to leave the order if I didn't receive the price advertised. The manager then began to go into a tailspin and stated that I couldn't just leave a $100 order and walk out on it. I told her that she should honor the advertised price and that I felt she was being very rude-as did her staff. She the. Told me that the website was not updated and then began blaming things on the previous manager. She told me again that she was new and this wasn't her fault. I told her that I would still pay for the order of she could adjust it to $100. The manager stated that it was only a $10 difference to which I replied that there were many associates in her restaurant that would love an extra $10. She then began sobbing. I apologized to her and stated that I felt it was a business' obligation to honor their advertised price. She went back to get the food and came back. Something happened in the back because when she came back she went over all of the selections with me. She apologized for her behavior and the behavior of her staff and them took $20 off of the price. She then asked if I was going to write a review on Yelp that I give an honest review of the food and not let the service effect the food quality. After writing all of the above I'm positive that all of the service industry workers hate my guts. I have to say that the sushi was EXCELLENT. I've been eating at Sakura Lakewood, Shinto Strongsville and Mizu Parma and this sushi is the best I've had out of the 3 and it was take out. Even at $110 I still feel this would have been a good value but I believe if there is an advertised price a business should honor that price and not argue with their customer. I'm very happy that this restaurant not only honored their website pricing but beat it. We will be returning to this restaurant in the future.

My husband loves this place! So much that the hostess and our server recognize him yet this was my first time visiting. I really enjoyed the clean & cozy atmosphere , including the amazing koi fish tank. However, this is seriously not the place for any picky eater. I was a tiny bit disappointed by their hot tea, instead of the expected traditional green or even jasmine whatever I was served was very floral and overpowering. And being the jerk that I am, the only thing on the menu slightly appealing was their won ton soup. I actually don't eat the meat in won ton soup (long story) but while I was dissecting my noodles , I couldn't help but appreciate how fresh the meat looked and clear the broth was. It had an okay taste but I've had better. My husbands sushi was absolutely beautiful! Since I don't eat sushi I can't really say more other than to suggest you read his review (Christopher C.) since he goes there ALL the time, lol. But they do have this fried green tea ice cream I wouldn't mind exploring ;)

Would give ZERO stars if I could!! Did not even order, got up and left. The hostess proceeded to tell me that there was a "problem" with the kitchen, and that sushi would take over an hour if ordered. Then once I foolishly sat down, the waiter tried to convince me to order chicken or beef or other items. NO I came here because I wanted sushi. How unprofessional. I came at an off time, 8:30 at night, and was told multiple times from the restaurant staff - don't order sushi it will take too long and come out wrong. I mean WTF!? Embarrassing. This is a SUSHI restaurant for gods sake!!!

I LOVE LOVE them.... But I think they are pricing themselves out of the market. A Crazy Roll ( California w/ Imitation crab--- essentially cheap whitefish ---- on top) is $9.75!!!!!!!! $9.75!!!!!!!!! Wha?????? Sushi is not that much to make. I mean white rice is $10 for 50lbs.... But I know it's a skill. Sadly I don't think I will be visiting here anymore unless I'm treated to it. Ahhhhhh then struggle of loving sushi.

Recently went here for lunch with a client as the other place I tried does not open for lunch. The quality was excellent, the service was great and while the place was not big, it was big enough and my party of three was comfortable. The biggest thing though, was the selection!! I have never seen so many different rolls as a sushi restaurant. I had the spicy salad which was great and the flaming tree which was unlike anything I have ever had before and delicious. Can't wait to go back and try more.

Average at best. We are in town for business for a week so we got a chance to try different restaurant here and there. We went in at almost 1 pm on Tuesday. The place wasnt that crowded so the service was decent .. no problem there. We started the meal off with the spicy salad. Let me tell you. The word 'spicy' should just be removed permanently. The salad was primarily shreded imitation crab meat with a bit of shrimp and squid. It tasted a bit sweet with a nice smell of sesame oil, but the problem is the spicy part. We didnt taste even a tiny little bit of the spiceness in the salad. The other starter was calamari. It was nicely fried .. very crispy, but didnt seem like it was freshly made in house. It gave me a feeling that they just used the frozen ones. Then we ordered 3 rolls - pink lady, spider, some spicy roll that i do not remember the name anymore. The pros :- all the rolls were huge portion so pretty good value for the money. The cons :- - The rice was pretty heavily packed to the border of way too much. - The freshness and the flavors werent quite there yet. - The raw fish in that spicy roll wasnt that fresh. I couldnt reallt taste the salmon. It was all like a pile of mush on top of rice to me. - The flavor combination of the pink lady was just average .. really nothing spetacular. All in all, this place is decent but it's clearly nowhere near the best. I've had way better.

The miso soup is very Good -- more miso as opposed to broth. Yum! And the sushi is very fresh. They also serve a house soy sauce that is delish!

TERRIBLE. The Sakura number one is "caramelized" with a blow torch... or is supposed to be. Mine tasted like the blow torch. Way overpriced and a crappy atmosphere. Do yourself a favor: save your money and drive right to Kasai.

Sakura is phenomenal! The first time we visited we felt the need to change our dine in order to take out because our toddler was screaming.... They were friendly and accommodating to our needs. No one likes a screaming toddler in a restaurant.....sushi was delicious as it would have been if we were sitting in their restaurant when we got home. The next time we were craving sushi we did not hesitate to make a take out order over the phone.

My absolute favorite sushi that I have found in Ohio since I have moved from California. Most places don't have fresh fish, understandable since we live in Ohio. This place is always busy, fresh fish, and creative rolls. Monday is there half price day, but it's just the simple rolls, nothing fancy. My boyfriend loves the paradise roll, it seems neat with the coconut on top. I stick to the pink lady, but a lot of their rolls are great. If you can't make up your mind, tell the sushi chef to make you something and tell them what you like and don't like and voila you'll have amazing rolls! It's quite a drive for me, but whenever I want sushi this is where I go everytime

My fiance and I enjoy a good sushi meal. Whenever we travel, we always make sure to try the local sushi places, and let me tell you... The best sushi I have ever had, hands down, is Sakura in little Fairlawn, OH. Never once have we ever left disappointed. Perfect, delicious rolls. Huge selections. You HAVE to order the Torched Dragon Roll. You will thank me :) The only thing that could be better about this place would be for them to hire friendly and smiling hostesses instead of the stuck up brats who have their noses in the air, and act like every customer who walks into the door is bothering them. However, it is easy to overlook this when the food is as delicious as it is. Love Sakura, and my fiance agrees.

I went to this restaurant based on Yelp reviews. When I arrived this week, I asked if the fish was wild caught or farm raised. The owners were asked and did not know. Opps. Tragic for someone in the food industry. I then ordered miso soup (how wrong could one go with that) and tempura. The tempura was not fried in panko, which is what I am used to at Japanese restaurants. (This must not be actual Japanese?) We left. Server was very nice and inquisitive. Continuing on my quest for good local sushi.

I didn't eat inside, but instead picked up three orders of different rolls to take home to enjoy. It was all very fresh and deliciously prepared.Being from LA, I miss having great sushi places around, and I never thought I'd find a solid sushi restaurant in Akron. I was wrong, this place is great!

Sakura was recommended by a fellow business traveler at the Holiday Inn. When I looked them up on yelp and found stellar reviews, I knew I had a winner. Restaurant is located in a sprawling strip mall. The sushi bar is large, with at least ten seats. Three sushi chefs were kept busy the Thursday night I was there. The sushi menu is extensive, with the basic rolls and sushi/sashimi (both come two per order, with an average price around $5), but most of the menu is 'special rolls'. Dozens and dozens of special rolls. They would benefit from a picture menu (hint!). I went with the scallop sushi and Twin Brother roll. The scallops were very fresh, sweet and smooth. The TB roll was spicy fried crawfish and cucumber inside with shrimp, sliced avocado and fish eggs on top. They also drizzled on eel sauce - I would have preferred a spicier sauce, but the roll was still tasty. $13 for 8 large pieces (slightly larger than Cali roll, for comparison). After watching my sushi chef (the one in front of me, who made my first rolls and sent out a little bowl of shredded krab and octopus - love that!!) make a roll wrapped in camo-colored soybean paper with a large crustacean tail sticking out, I had to ask what it was. Cowboy Maki. After checking the menu - tempura lobster tail (!) with cucumber, spicy sauce and fish eggs for $9 - yep, sign me up! While not the largest lobster tail ever, it was definitely more substantial than a shrimp. Not as spicy as I would have liked (roll did not come with a sauce on it), but the overall flavor was still outstanding. Similar size to the TB roll, but only 6 pieces. My waitress was busy (she got seated with some needy family tables), but others checked in on me too, with everyone keeping my water filled, and answering any questions I had about the sushi they took to their tables. I will return.

The best sushi in town hands down. The place is pretty small but very relaxing. I was almost overwhelmed by the assortment of sushi available. I tried four different rolls and every single one was amazing. Have a lot of options that I've never heard of before. Such as sushi with mango or lemon. Highly recommend. I would've rated this place with 5 stars but the service was barely good. At the very least a smile would've been nice. Don't let the lack of customer service get in your way. You need to check out their sushi.

This is our sushi location of choice and we have convinced many who now say the same. I have tried many nearby locations as well as the usual: Golden Dragon, Sushi Rock (ugh), House of Hunan. None come remotely close. They expanded several years ago to handle the crowd even though it is consistently busy they do a great job of accommodating your party (often ours are large). The service is EXCELLENT (ask for Tiffany). She remembers everyone we bring here. What they drank, what they like and all the selections we love and don't love. While we miss the head sushi chef Andy, the staff has more than made up for his absence. The rolls are supremely fresh, the selections and creativity are endless and the presentation is really fantastic. I brought my nephew here who had just returned to the US from 2 yeas in Japan. He had perfected sushi criticism and was set on never eating it in the states again. Until we brought him here. He was pleasantly surprised - and he is from Northern, CA! Our favorites include: Maureen, Paradise, Red Dragon, Green Hat, and nearly all of the sashimi. Saving the last for best... make sure to always order the spicy salad. It's donwright addictive and you'll want to travel here for that alone. I credit Sakura with making my young children sushi lovers.

Love Sakura for it's location. I work in Fairlawn, so having a place that is close by really helps out. Of course, there are three other sushi places that are also in the area: House of Hunan, Sushi Katsu, and BigEye. However, Sakura generally wins out for their speed and spicy salad. Probably not the most traditional or 'authentic' (seriously, do people still judge places by authenticity in America?), but the food is pretty darn good. The Golden Dragon, Pink Lady, Green Hat, Sakura No. 1, and Valentine's roll are all good. Huge fan of their spicy salad.

We were in the area, hungry for sushi. We looked up multiple yelp reviews and Sakura was raved about. Took a chance and rolled dice... This place was everything a sushi restaurant should be and more. It is tucked away in a Montrose plaza by Hudson's and Pad Thai. Not super fancy but still nice on the inside. Huge selection of sushi! We ordered miso soup, the Spicy Phoenix Maki roll (comes with a delicious spicy sauce), Philadelphia Crunch Maki roll and Spicy Crab roll. All were really delicious! They even brought cute little cut up orange for dessert! Still thinking a about this meal a day later! Prices were good and our waiter told us about a great Monday special. Nice end to a long Saturday at Summit mall. We will be back soon for sure!!

First timer looking forward to visit as heard this was good place for sushi in Akron area. Service was good. I was promptly seated at the bar and given a warmed wipe cloth to clean my hands and my order was taken shortly after I asked the sushi makers about the freshness of the scallops. Ordered a yellowtail roll, a spicy tuna roll and a spicy scallop hand roll. Sapporo and sushi quickly followed. Yellowtail roll was missing scallions. Spicy tuna was a mush that tasted a bit Chicken of the Seaish. There was nothing spicy or fresh about the scallop roll. Sushi was bland and only improved slightly by dipping in soy/wasabi sauce. Got a free sample of not sure what from chef that slightly awoke my taste buds, but meal was a disappointment to say the least. To top it off, I'm typing this at 2:00 AM suffering the consequences of having eaten here for dinner last night. Will continue my search for decent sushi in the area, but will not be a repeat customer here.

I absolutely love this place! Everything is fresh and delicious, it makes it hard to eat Sushi anywhere else! Try the Spicy Phoenix and the Paradise Roll, two of my favorites.

Just left the Sakura restaurant and needed to post because there was some major cleanliness issues. When I got to restaurant, one stall in restroom was covered with diarrhea on the floor, toilet seat and the person didn't flush. Then the waitress came out if the next stall and never washed her hands! After my meal, which tasted fine, I went to restroom and the same waitress walked in. I mustered the bravery to actually say to her that she needs to wash her hands. After she went to bathroom she left again without washing her hands. I discussed with manager.

Smelled very fishy when entering on a busy Saturday night. Never a good sign. Staff was super nice. Location is a strip mall and added nothing. The sushi? Average. They dump sauce on it so slightly below at times. Overall we find the reviews here overstated. We wouldn't avoid this place but never would we seek it out. My wife and I both feel that our local place (House Gourmet) is better and cheaper. Cilantro is better and has a vibe but more expensive. Golden Dragon in the falls has it all: good price, food, and setting. In short: don't make a special trip based on the reviews here.

This place is truly fantastic! Lots of variety on the rolls and the prices range from just under 6 bucks for your Maki (beginner) rolls to 15 for the more adventuresome. Guys... take your date here, fill her full of sushi and saki... then see how much better your night unfolds. (For some of you it might take more saki than others, but you can thank me later.) The service is great (except for that one creepy server.... and you know who you are.) Can get crowded on Friday or Saturday nights, but they have specials throughout the week that really make you want to visit on another day anyway.

Pretty good for this part of Ohio! I enjoyed the service, the ambiance and the food. Location was in a plaza so maybe hard to find (behind chipotle near cold stone). Great fresh sushi even towards the end of the night. Server knew the menu and suggested great sauces! Kudos! I am happy I found good sushi being back in OH! This is my favorite!

Sick Sushi Chef, My wife and I eat lunch there today and as soon as we ordered one of the Sushi chefs started coughing like he had SARS. He made no attempt to cover his mouth when coughing. He was not our chef or We would have left. He had a very wet congested cough and even coughed up what sounded like a Cuenca of lung. He just spit it into a paper towel and went right on working. It was gross. He saw me giving him a dirty look when her was hacking away without even covering his mouth and he gave me a even dirtier look. He even coughed over the clean plates and sushi boats. I will never go back again unless I get the flu from him and in that case I will only go back to kick his but.

I've had sushi on both coasts and Sakura is by far the best sushi I've ever had. The newly remodeled dinning room is great!!! My favorite rolls are: Jalapeño Yummy, Sushi Cake, Torch Dragon, Fire Maki! And everyone must try the Spicy Salad!!!

Food: Consistently good rolls but nothing revolutionary. Crowd: Never had to wait more than 10 minutes to be seated. Recommendation: You can be assured of a tasty meal that I'm 99% sure is not from Lake Erie.

I've been a fan of Sakura since I started eating sushi about 10 years ago. Now that I've traveled a bit and managed to sample some of the best sushi around, Sakura still holds up as a very good establishment for the price, quality, and atmosphere. The restaurant is situated, as many things are situated in Akron, in part of a strip mall next to an obnoxious family-style restaurant, formerly a steak house. Sakura itself is a kind of minimalist modern Asian-inspired place but not obnoxious or pretentious. They just set up a nice little seating area with places to sit and eat, and make it comfortable for everyone. The menu contains a lot of mainstays in therms of maki rolls, special rolls, sashimi, bento boxes and so on, and there are a number of house specials included within. Every week, they have an additional board of new or special creations, as well. The quality of the ingredients is good and the presentation is quite nice. I've never had a bad meal at Sakura, though occasionally the rolls can be a little too salty... whether the salt is in the rice or the sauces, I'm not sure, but it doesn't detract from the taste too much. It could simply have been my selections last time that led to the salt-overload. Last, the service is normally quite good and very friendly. They not only tolerate but encourage me and my friends in our sake-bomb habit. I think, because of us, they actually added that to the menu.

Sakura is a real gem. The quality of this place is so high that it could stand on its own in almost any city in the US not on the coasts.

My girlfriend and I have been coming to Sakura for about a year and every time we are blown away by the amazing sushi, service, and overall restaurant experience here. They have a huge selection of well-sized and fairly-priced rolls and all the sushi is incredibly fresh. The service is always fast and everyone is very nice. All in all, Sakura is hands down the best sushi place in the Kent/Akron area. Recommendations (even though you really cant go wrong) : Philadelphia Crunch Roll, Sun Maki Roll, Dragon Roll

I won't say much since the others have pretty much covered the essentials. Delicious sushi...Hidden Dragon would be my favorite choice. Wonderful ambiance, and patio available for those rare perfect weather days! Saki shots available and apparently popular judging from the party group sitting behind my table. The restaurant is clearly liked since it was packed the whole night - my dinner group stayed for quite a while after eating just talking and catching up and the staff didn't seem to mind at all. Can't wait to return!

Sakura is a hidden nugget along route 18. Tucked away in a strip mall, it would be easy to miss. Don't do it, though.. don't miss it! You will find some tasty sushi offerings here for a reasonable price.

My wife and I have been loyal patrons of Sakura since they opened. Similar to a previous review from Andrew D, we have had sushi at all the places where you "have to try", and throughout all of our travels throughout the region, even to New York City, Sakura is still the best. I always tell people the number one thing I look for in a quality sushi restaurant is consistency. I have had wonderful sushi at several places, but rarely two trips in a row. Sakura is wonderful every time. We have had everything on the menu, literally. But a few of our favorites are: From the sushi menu: Uni (hard to find good Uni, its typically unbelievable here) Sushi Cake Stoplight Lovers Cake Any of their spicy rolls, particularly spicy yellowtail From the Hot menu: I get their beef negamaki usually which is awesome, but occasionally ive had the chicken teryaki which is good Appetizers: Their age-tofu is impossible to beat spicy salad. Enjoy!

This is my go-to sushi place, and has been for around two years now. I have never been disappointed by Sakura. The food is always amazing, very fresh, and the menu is huge! My favorites are the Butterfly Roll and the Spicy Salad. The spicy salad makes me smile on the inside! The wait staff is always very attentive and helpful, which makes up for any language barriers that you may experience. The owner is very nice and always on hand...I love that he knows who i am when i walk in, but it may be all the tattoos i have, lol. It can be a bit pricey to eat here, but it's worth every penny.

Tiny little facade in a typically Ohioan strip mall, but inside the courteous and helpful staff are waiting to lovingly massage your tastebuds to ecstasy. We got 3 rolls, one from the special board and two from the regular menu. We branched out on the special, New Moon, we aren't the most adventurous eaters and it was well worth it. So good. We ate at the sushi bar so we got to watch them whip (wrap) it up right in front of us, we also scored some sort of crab/squid salad amuse bouche that was lovely. Top 5 sushi experiences of my life, can't wait to come back.

If you like sushi this is the place. The selection, service, and above all the or is second to none. The prices are average for sushi houses. I've been trying many places for sushi and have to say the only other places that come close are haiku in Columbus and cilantro in Akron. I would highly recommend this place to anyone.

Best Sushi roll place in Akron/Cleveland, and I personally think of all the Japanese restaurants I've being to, this place has the best sushi roll. My favorites are Sakura number one, tiger crunch, sogo, butterfly, magic sgone.... many of them. The sake are also very good at this place.

I get Magic Stone every time! I've been going for a few years now about once a week for lunch. I've only been here 4 times for dinner but over 100 times for lunch. Great service, great food!!! I've had just about everything on the menu. Don't miss out on 10% off Saturday for lunch!

Best sushi in Akron and probably one of the best in NE Ohio. The food is excellent and there are lots of variety in term of rolls. Some items on the menu are creative and some sound so appealing, it make you want to give it a try. The place is small but the atmosphere makes up for it. Also you can get good deals on some rolls every Monday as they have Specials going on. Service is wonderful and the food is great value compared to other Japanese restaurants. Definitely recommend.

Used to be good... They changed management and ownership in the last year. Although they kept the rolls' names, they significantly changed the ingredients. We went today and ordered some of our staple favorites, only to find they're now using cheaper ingredients, rice instead of marbled wrap, and different sauces. Totally changed the flavor of the rolls--for worse. We used to be able to come in and order "off menu"--ask for special rolls that they weren't advertising anymore, but they'd still make them. Apparently the sushi chefs have changed as well, because they flat out refused to make a special order for us... and then we got to hear from the waitress several times that the sushi chefs do this all the time and she's afraid to confront them about it. Really sucks, this was our favorite sushi place. I miss the old owner. Anybody know where he went?

Their sweet potato sushi is amazing. The food is is consistently delivered. Every time I go, I know what to expect, which I appreciate. Their service is inconsistant and some of the servers need regular reminders if you ask for something. all in all, I'm pleased every time I go.

The best sushi in Akron or Canton without question. Sakura #1 roll is the tastiest I have ever had. I don't think you can go wrong here. Friendlier service than most sushi places too. These guys got it down.

I love this place!!!! The service is very nice. The servers are attentive and sweet, but not trying to be part of your meal. They are very very good about refilling drinks. I drink tons of tea when I eat sushi, and my cup is never below half full when I am there. The prices are great and the sushi is delicious! We eat mostly vegetarian and shrimp rolls and they've all been amazing. The eel and octopus is great too! We had a fermented soybean one that left something to be desired, but it was expected. It just tasted fermented, which we should have known we were not going to like. Great place for groups, couples, singles, and families. Casual if you want to be OR you could dress up and still feel comfortable. Once again, I LOVE IT!

  • Christopher C.

The food is good. I'll give them that. That's where all the stars come from. However, the service was hella awkward. Some how overly-attentive and alienating at the same time. The layout was awkward as well. I wouldn't choose to go here again, but if someone were to take me there, at least the food would be worth it. Really, though, Big Eye down the road is both closer (to Akron) and way nicer. Also in a strip-mall. AK needs to get it's sushi joints out of strip-malls. It's just weird...

We heard there was good, fresh sushi in Akron and this is the place. I would agree with that. The quality of the sushi is comparable to House of Hunan, a couple miles down Market Street. But Sakura would be my pick for sushi between the two for one simple reason - the maki roll offering is much more creative and interesting. There were nice, small touches as well, like providing a small salt shaker alongside the edamame instead of salting it in advance. I would have expected the miso soup to be a little better - not bad but very average. The staff was very good but the ambiance was just a little "flat", although the kids will enjoy the prominent fish tank. All in all, the best in Akron for sushi in my experience.

My 2nd home. I love their chirashi box. The sashimi is delicious, fresh and never warm, and the sushi chefs prepare the food beautifully. This is the place for any Japanese food.

Tried Sakura for the first time last night. Delicious sushi/sashimi (I had the chirashi, seaweed salad, and nado (fermented soybeans). The nado is an acquired taste, inasmuch as it has a strong, pungent aroma and taste. The service is top notch. Very friendly and attentive staff.

Sakura has decent sushi, but not very authentic. The price is average, and the restaurant is clean. However, If you wanna have better sushi and wouldn't mind driving about 25 min to Wadsworth, I would recommend a sushi bar named Kasai there.

the best sushi in akron, hands down. every time i go there or get take out i am blown away. i pretty much always get the same things and then try one new thing. i tend to usually go with the same group and we all agree. rolls i adore: red dragon spicy scallop chop chop their salad dressing is yum, even though the salad is simple. all the japanese dishes like chicken teriyaki came out looking and tasting amazing - NOTHING negative at all! house sake is yummy and inexpensive. something i'm really pick about when it comes to sushi is the rice. sakura has perfected sushi rice - not too chunky, not too vinegary, PERFECT. consistency and flavor alike. seriously, do yourself a favor and pick up some rolls from here sometime. yummooo.

It is an established fact that I am a Fish Freak... I love me some sushi. When I am in San Francisco I eat a hearty sashimi dinner at least once a week. I like to think that I have a reasonably well developed palate when it comes to sushi and sashimi. My friends know this. It is for this reason that the past several times that I have been home to visit, my BFF Tony and my "he came along with the BFF" (herein abbreviated as HCAWTBFF) Andy have refused to take me to their favorite sushi place in Akron (Sakura). Because, as Tony puts it, I am a "sushi snob" and they were afraid that I would be condescending in comparing it to the outstanding sushi they presume I eat on a daily basis in California. I assured them that I would not be as such, but let it drop on the past few visits (which were shorter in nature) as I knew I would be back in SF soon enough when I could have cheap and fresh fish out the wazzoo. I have now been in Ohio for... um... eighteen days. After about day ten I began craving sushi so much that at night I was dreaming of toro and hamachi and sake and other fishy delights... in fact my dream of eating mass amounts of sushi was so vivid that I woke up one morning with drool upon my pillow. I have been going through some serious sushi withdrawal. I needed fish and I needed it fast... so when an opportunity arose to go out to dinner with my BFF, HCAWTBFF and their better halves this evening, I INSISTED that they introduce me to their favorite sushi joint, swearing on a stack of bibles that I wouldn't be snotty or condescending about it. That I would take it for what it is: Good sushi in the Midwest. My expectations were low, I had thoughts of store quality pre-packaged sushi roaming in my head... you just never know. I was very very very pleasantly surprised. I ordered a sashimi and nigiri combination dinner - it came with soup and salad - priced $23.99. Pretty good price, considering the location... a little more pricey than I wanted, but sometimes ya gotta pay to get your fish on. The soup was a little fishy for my taste. The salad was a typical iceberg lettuce salad with some sort of sesame dressing on it. What really delighted me was the sashimi and nigiri platter. It was beautifully plated and I was pleased to see that I had a very large portion of both sashimi (15 pieces of assorted fish) and nigiri (10 pieces.) The slices of fish were very thick, too. Included were tai, toro, maguro, hamachi, akagai, sake and two fishes which I couldn't identify by taste (though one was really fishy - I didn't like it too much). The maguro was obviously frozen, not fresh (you can tell if tuna has been frozen because it tastes watery and mealy)... However, this was made up for by the OUTSTANDING quality of the toro - it was so good I almost cried - tasted like butter. The sake and akagai were also outstanding... in fact I'd say that the quality of the toro, sake and akagai at Sakura rivaled that of the quality of the same fishes at some of the better West Coast sushi joints I've been a patron at over the years. The menu also has a great selection of rolls, including a couple of really inventive ones using non-traditional ingredients (such as Frosted Flakes - I know, eww - but, the HCAWTBFF swears that it's a delicacy.) I didn't try any rolls this evening, but the others did and what they had looked yummy. My only objection is that they seem to use smoked sake in a lot of their rolls - I prefer fresh - if I wanted smoked salmon I'd just eat some Lox, you know? A little pricey, yes, but so worth it for the Fish Freak stuck in the Midwest. I left Sakura with my tummy full and my endorphins flowing from the yum-yumness of good sushi. I is a happy Kate. If you're ever in Akron, Ohio - check this place out - totally worth it. Fish primer for those who don't know: Tai - Snapper Toro - Fatty white tuna Maguro - Red tuna Hamachi - Yellowtail Sake - Salmon Akagai - Red clam

In an unassuming strip mall sits a most fantastic dining experience! Sakura is the best place in Akron for sushi. Two can dine for about $20 on their Maki Dinner specials...you get miso soup, salad with the most amazing ginger dressing, and your choice of sushi rolls. If you're feeling adventurous, you can try one of their many specialty rolls, which are large enough to be a meal on their own. Their recent remodeling has turned this tiny eatery into a very charming place to enjoy a delicious meal.
