My friend took me here last time I was home. SO GOOD! SO MANY CHOICES! Awesome when you're buzzed! Super great service, and genious sandwiches. Next time I want a sandwich with tater tots on it. It may make me plan another trip home just for that. Seriously, that good.

Ah yes, Highland Square. Zub's is within walking distance of my old abode. I can appreciate some good food nearby. Akron is pretty much a sea of chain stores and dives. While a little divey, Mr. Zubs has a unique atmosphere and menu for... you know... a sub shop. Very interesting combos, cute names, friendly staff, and very delicious sides and "extras." Sometimes I wish most of the sandwiches weren't on a bagel, but there are worse things in life.

We had a fairly large order. EVERYTHING was GREAT! LOVED the Homer Simpson....Sweet Donuts around a juicy cheeseburger. Yum. Deep fried oreos! What a dream. Funnel cake fries....I have never had a white veggie pizza and that was awesome too. Mr Zubs staff makes you feel like one of the family. Thanks Mr Zubs...YOU ROCK

Visited for a late lunch. The staff was very friendly. There are a LOT of sandwich choices. I chose the The Sam Rothstein which was fantastic. I also ordered a side of seasoned fries which were only OK.

I couldn't even tell you what a hipster is. But this is supposedly a hipster joint. That doesn't bother me, but apparently hipsters are rude as f. Staff was VERY unfriendly and not even approachable. Being my first time here I asked what sells best. The girl looked at me like I was crazy and told me to just order whatever I wanted, rolling her eyes at the same time. Food was fairly good, better than I expected. Prices were higher but you get what you pay for. Atmosphere was fine. Nothing fancy, but doesn't scare you away. I'd say as long as you know what you're hungry for and don't mind paying a little more than your usual lunch bill, then give this place a shot. I overlooked the rudeness, maybe you can too.

Got the diggler.. Awesome.. Get it with grilled onions.... Big enough to share!!! Called ahead and it was 10 minutes... Staff is friendly.... Also LOVE the tots.... Will be back!!!

Look if Yelp had a negative 1 star rating I would rate this establishment just that. I have had nothing but bad experiences here especially with one bartender with long blonde hair and a trucker hat. He is a grade A asshole. This man threatened to kick me out because I responded to another patron calling me a nigger. I took offense to being called a nigger and because of me taking offense to it then the douche had the balls to talk trash about my friends and I infront of another patron. I'm done and will be taking my business elsewhere.

Overpriced and the food was super greasy and gross tasting. The place looked dirty and like it was falling apart. The counter staff had an attitude. Would not recommend. Chipotle is across the street!

Pretty good overall. I like the idea of all the sandwiches being named after different movie characters. I recently went there and got the Benny Blanco, which was a mexican philly cheesesteak. It was pretty good, but I don't know if it was $8 good/portion. I've had their coleslaw and pasta salad in the past and I'm not really a fan. When I'm drunk in Highland Square it is a 5/5, but when I'm sober it is more of a 3/5. I really like the place, but I came to the conclusion that if it was really that good then I would go there (sober) often, but I don't. Again, I like the place, everyone should try it out, but the food isn't necessarily out of this world.

You know how people complain about hipsters and you think: that's just a stupid label...? Well sorry, I'll be the small-minded person this go-round and label this an UNFRIENDLY hipster joint. Mainly unfriendly, though - that's what bothers me. I write a NE Ohio food, etc. blog (nerdy, I know) and so I usually like to ask places what sells, recommendations, and break the ice a little. Girl at the counter wasn't having it, tho. Roll of eyes... "whatever you like...(mumble)." No smile. No eye contact. Call me old-fashioned, but I like warm people. Can't stand places that treat you like you ought to feel lucky for being allowed in. Okay, it is what it is. Maybe the weather is pissing this chick off? Food is overpriced, as you expect from so-called "hip" places. Got the boring Hank Hill and some tots. I was hungry, so I wanted something that seemed filling. Corned beef on Texas toast (I think?). Meat was tender and fine. Bread was avg. Rye would be better. Tots were delicious. Hard to f those up, right? I didn't try anything interesting = my fault. Food = okay. Prices = semi-overpriced. Attitudes = shit. Design and marketing = really good.

I was not that impressed. The menu has a good variety, and I like the way they separate the categories and allow you to build your own sandwich/salad. I had the borat, which was disappointing. The falafels were dry, and the condiments just didn't add much flavor. The coleslaw was good - exactly like Pizza Oven (in the Canton area), if you're familiar with that. The sides they give you with the combos are enough for two, which makes the combo a really good deal. My group also had a corned beef/egg sandwich, philly, club, salad, mozzarella sticks, mac&cheese, and fries, and everyone agreed that their food was 'ok' but not 'good'. Maybe you just need to go when drunk so you have lower expectations. The bathrooms are filthy and there is no changing table. We chose this place bc it was the top rated option on Yelp near the Akron Zoo (it's about 10 minutes away). I need to remember that Yelpers and I just don't see eye-to-eye when it comes to sandwich shops. I probably wouldn't come back if this was nearby, and I definitely won't be going out of my way again.

I love sandwiches and its difficult to find a good one in the Akron area. This place was suggested to me by a local Akronite after a night of bar-hopping. I had their version of a Reuben aka The Royal Tenenbaum and I was in love. I have a hard time trying anything else when I go there, despite my desire to, because I just love it so much. My step-sister, who has been a life-long hater of Reuben's, decided to give mine a try the first night and became hooked! I have had to take her back while sober and she still loved it! They name their sandwiches after characters of famous movie/television shows and you can mix and match if you want. One other time I decided to actually try the Lisa Simpson and I made the mistake of not eating it right away. When I tried to eat it later after a shot in the microwave, I was sad that I wasted a potentially monumental cheese sandwich. Bread hard, cheese...not properly melty. That's what I get for my mistreatment of it! I'll give it another try some other time. It's a small, kinda dirty looking divey place that often has a line, but I haven't ever waited long. Also, they are open super late, due to trying to capture the bar crowds at 2-3am so I am super happy to have somewhere to go at an odd time that I get a hankering because a lot of places in Akron near downtown shut up like ghost towns when the white collar crowd goes home. On occasion the parking can be a problem during the day but I usually go late anyway and more or less park where I want. In a pinch, the restaurants are typically closed across the street and I park there. They are attached to a bar next door and you can likely get a beer with your sandwich if you like.

Ok, I must admit I do NOT get what the big deal is about this place. I've been there many a time with drunken friends and ordered something different each time. Everything has been overpriced, greasy, and overpowered by one peculiar ingredient or another. How hard is it to make a tasty sandwich? Go to Chipotle or Aladdin's! I dread it whenever someone suggests going to Zub's.

  • Cortney R.

Good selection at the bar. Small, but I knew that going there. The bathroom is the main reason I'm giving such a low rating. When you drink a lot, you have to use the restroom a lot and the restroom was atrocious. I get that it was a Friday night and the place was packed but wow was it awful. If I didn't need to go so badly, I would have held it. I was afraid to touch anything in the bathroom for fear of catching a deadly virus.

I like how the menu changes from season to season. A lil disappointed that certain seasonal items don't stay year round. A little limited on their spicy food selection. Very creative the way movie characters are incorporated into naming menu items. Nice touch. Hours are great and you can walk next door and have a beer while waiting for food to cook. I have never had a bad meal here but my bowels would say otherwise.

Just had me zubes for the first time, 2 in the morn. Tons of drunk young people it was fun. Got a Craig Jones and added jalapeño creme cheese. If the sandwich you're ordering doesn't have jalapeño creme cheese then add it because IT IS THE SHIIIT. also saw my friend Gary and all his friends which was cool and they had a hip hype man that helped me choose what to order. PRETTY COOL.

Fun and friendly place to eat a UNIQUE sandwich and home made side items. They're open really late most nights I think until 3 am. Not for the dieters.

  • Donnell S.

The food is okay but the service is terrible. The dude behind the counter either didn't want to be there or is too cool for school. All he could say was the price. I mistakenly ordered a can of pop instead of a fountain drink, because the drink fountain is kind of hidden and this guy was too cool to inform me that it was an option. Parking is also a hassle as its all metered parking in the area. Strange that Akron would penalize the area with metered parking when its not exactly a hot spot to begin with. Maybe next year I'll try them again and maybe they'll have hired someone who actually wants a job.

A great selection of sandwiches combined with late hours makes for a Highland Square staple. We used to walk here for some hot sandwiches and a big box of tots. Which, by the way, makes for a great late night meal. There's something oddly therapeutic about stuffing your face with deep fried Oreos and shwarma. One last thing. Do yourself a favor and have the Rocky Balboa.

Stopped in based on strong Yelp ratings - and I was not disappointed. My pastrami sandwich was prepared to perfection. Nice thin slices of very tasty meat. Nice size portions too - not too much, not too little. Actually one of the best sandwiches I've had in a long time. And the service was excellent too; they brought my sandwich out to my table even though I think you're supposed to pick them up at the counter . . . Looking forward to trying more of their menu.

  • Jessi H.

I'm not even going to try to dress it up, this is the BEST place to cure the drunken munchies. The pasta salad is truly to die for. I have not gotten a single thing from the menus that I didn't like. HOWEVER, and this is a big one, the only reason it doesn't get 5 full stars is the clientele. Depending on the time you go there, you will either encounter super pretentious hipsters (that seem to be the majority of the community's population) or belligerently drunk people spilling in from the nearby bars. When they get busy, the service is slower than molasses.

Cheers to my favorite little bar in Akron, oh how you've always been there for me! Thank you for the cheap drinks, solid beer selection, stellar people watching, and undying commitment to being unapologetically hipster - it's ok, it's why I love you. Yes, your bathroom is often rather nasty, but as they say, it's all part of your charm. XO.

Mr. Zub's has some of the best sandwiches in Akron, OH. I love their Lisa Simpson and Rock Balboa. The Lisa Simpson is made of multiple layers of cheese sandwiched together with Texas toast. My wife and her friends are very big fans of this sandwich and I would recommend it to anyone. The Rock Balboa is my favorite. This one is a traditional Philly cheese steak topped with grilled onions and green peppers. Definitely a great late night snack after being out on the town.

Rarely have I come across a restaurant where I think the food is so good that I really could care less about the rest of my experience, but this place is like that for me. The unfortunate part is that the sandwich that I am so in love with is just a seasonal item so I really don't know if it will still be there whenever I get the chance to eat there again. I got the Chong Li (bad guy in Bloodsport), which as soon as I saw it on the menu, I knew that was the sandwich for me. I like Philly cheese steaks, but sometimes they can be a little dry depending where you get it so why not add some Thai flavor to it. Yep, that's a great idea. I absolutely love the spicy sweet combo that is in a lot of Thai dishes and this sandwich had that in every bite. At this point, I'm purely giving this place 5 stars based on that sandwich alone. I was there with 3 other guys who all got different sandwiches and they all loved theirs too. I would like to try some of the other options on the menu but as long as the Chong Li is there, that will probably be my go to sandwich.

Very cool place in Highland. We ordered five sandwiches: Fletch, Tommy Boy, Borat, Ronnie Vaughn and a reuben- can't remember. All were great! The pretzel bagel on the Ronnie Vaughn looked yummy! The reuben was huge & amazing! I would go again. Cool location, watch out for the gross rest room, though

Pretty decent food, tots are good. I just feel exceptionally awful after I eat there. Also, one time in July I sat for 32 minutes to get my food. So now I order ahead. However, I still eat there and it's super quirky and trendy to have goofy names for sandwiches. If a restaurant could have a "Whatever, I don't care" attitude, this would be the place. I'm not sure how that will be received, I don't think it's a compliment.

Being a huge sandwich guy, I was very intrigued by this place after reading the reviews. My wife's absolute addiction to Chipotle has ruined most of their food for me, so the fact that Mr Zubs is right across from Chipotle makes it perfect for us. My first impression was the overwhelmingly large menu on their website! Never had I seen so many unique sandwiches that sounded so delicious on one menu! The names only added to my awe and amazement. I knew I had to try it at that point. I really wasn't sure what to expect after walking in to their grungy cramped dining room, but soon realized that was part of the vintage look they were going for. I actually have grown to love the laid back, casual atmosphere. As far as the food itself, it was like a harmony of flavor-filled goodness my mouth had never experienced before! Who knew a bagel with garlic cream cheese, roast beef, and tater tots could create such an amazing flavor?! The Uncle Rico has to be in the top 4 sandwiches I have ever had, primarily due to the uniqueness of the cream cheese alone. I have tried some of their other sandwiches since. All of them were at least a 7 out of 10 or higher and worth trying, but the Uncle Rico is in another league for me. They are a tad bit pricier than your typical fast-casual restaurant, but you certainly won't be breaking the bank. Sandwiches range between $6-$9 with no sides included. Definitely worth the price. Now when my wife asks for Chipotle for the 2nd or 3rd time in a week I can gladly opt for Mr Zubs instead and never, ever regret it! I have brought a few of my friends here and every one of them has been blown away. It's worth the 25 minute drive to come here at least once a month! So in summary, one of the most unique, eclectic sandwich shops you will ever find.

Late night food in Highland Square that doesn't require a drive to Bitchin' Kitchen (wait, is it still around?!) or Taco Bell? Sign me up! A hard night of drinking at Square and Ray's calls for serious post-bar sustenance, and fortunately my friend had this on our list of stops. Apparently everyone had the same game plan because the line was out the door. Flustered by the menu organization and various fonts (not easy when you've got beer goggles - oy!), I ordered a Tommy Boy. Obviously a saucy, oooey gooey meatball sub was a poor choice for drunk food handling but it was piping hot and delicious in my tum tum. Totally satisfied, Tommy! I've already picked out my sub for next time - I'll be ordering the Ernie McCracken, whoever he is. The downside: estimated wait time of "30 minutes". No joke. Yes, the place was crowded, but the line went quick, and I am not sure how it could possibly take that long to make a sandwich. Granted, it did come out faster than that, but I can picture people passing out in the restaurant waiting for their food. With an average cost of about $5 or so, it's a must for post-bar munchies. Or for lunch munchies. Or really anytime. Next time I'm in town, I'll be baaaack. (They need an Arnold Schwarzenegger-esque named sandwich, btw. Terminator, perhaps?)

Mr. Zub's is a cool sandwich shop in Highland Square, Akron's only slightly Bohemian neighborhood. This is as unique a sandwich menu as you will find anywhere in the area. I had the Hightower which is a bacon and mac & cheese on white bread. Bread was good, not just a couple of slices of Wonder Bread. It was delicious, along with the tater tots I had for a side. The staff is friendly, prices are fair, and the ambiance is quite casual. I'll be back.

I had driven by this place a few times while in Akron and always meant to go. I was intrigued by the nice yellow facade and well designed butter stick logo. It sounded fun and like good food, but I've been going to the Lockview as my default for awhile when I'm in town. While searching for a sandwich/soup/lunch spot this Sunday, I finally remembered this place. The place is easy enough to find and open all the time. I can't stress enough the open all the time part and how JEALOUS I am of all you Akron people for that. Totally. Jealous. Akronites (and yeah, that is your real demonym). Anyhow, the menu can be either seen as well designed and clever (me) or completely hard to understand (everyone else with me.) First, all sandwiches are named after movie characters. I HIGHLY suggest looking up on the wall (either one) and picking from the menu up there - not on the one on the table. The one on the wall is organized by sandwich type and makes it easier to find things. Take your time with the menu - there is a lot. And their seasonal sandwiches are on a handwritten menu. Or obsess about it in the car because you are hungry and read the menu before you come in on Facebook like I did. You order at a counter and go pick up your food. They have a fountain machine that has coke and mountain dew - which is both amazing and weird. It does shut off at 9pm, just a note. Anyhow, my husband had the Uncle Rico, an amazing roast beef sandwich with onion and chive cream cheese and tater tots on it. If you have never had a sandwich with cream cheese on it, get one. Please. They are delicious, and they taste great here. I personally had a seasonal sandwich, but we also tried the soups of the day - corn chowder and potato chophouse. Both were great. They had delicious jalapeno ravioli as well. They carry treats from an outside bakery and have funnel cake fries. I wanna go back one day for those. I now get to add to my list of 'great places to eat when I visit Akron'.

Highland Square is such a cool area anyways, but Mr. Zub's is one of the best little places in the neighborhood. I love the aptly named food that just adds to the fun and creativity of this place. The Uncle Rico is out of this world. Be prepared to work your ass off at the gym the next day, but the super crunchy, soft in the middle, piping hot tots are totally worth it. Other favorites include the Vincent Gambini, the Hightower, the Sam Rothstein and the Aunt Margie (don't forget the fried egg!). Also, if you have never had falafel, let The Borat be your first. All this rave for an incredibly fair price!! I am just thankful this place is 5 minutes from my law school!!!

Good price awesome food. Got the Thai chili cheese steak and the stuffed tots. Cool place and next to a record store. I'll visit again next time I'm in Akron.

Delightfully hip sandwich joint in the fading but hip Highland Square neighborhood. Sandwiches named after cult movie characters. The Sam Rothstein (corned beef, pastrami, capicola) is an adequate remembrance of Lou & Hy's combo deli sandwiches. The David St. Hubbins (turkey, bacon, onion & chive cream cheese) is a true original. Made to order so expect a wait. But it's truly worth it. A one of a kind place that's also a favorite for the late night bar crowd. Imagine how many drunk driving accidents and arrests have been avoided as patrons flowed out of closing bars and into this place for a bite. THAT is a public service!

  • Pedro A.

Definitely a fan of Mr. Zub's. The Homer Simpson was awesome!!! A bit pricey, but it's worth it. So much to choose from. I like it, my family likes it...we'll definitely be back.

What a menu! Lots and lots of variety and everything is named for a tv/movie character. The decor inside reflects this, it's really fun and cute. I had a falafel sandwich which was decent (falafel was a bit dry) and mozzarella sticks that were good but they were out of marinera (and only told us after making the sticks).. No big complaints, really, just little things stopped this from being a 5 star! Oh, and the prices are very reasonable. Overall, solid and fun place!

For being a city of just under 200,000 so close to a once-major city such as Cleveland, Akron has quite a distinct restaurant scene. While ethnic restaurants are often neglected here outside of your Luigi's or Aladdin's, Akron's burger joints, fried chicken restaurants, sandwich restaurants, and delis are surprisingly amazing. As a result, Akron has some of the ugliest and fattest people in the world (can you say "hyperbole"?). One of the places that stands out but for whatever reason doesn't receive much outside recognition is Mr. Zub's, which is connected to The Matinee, the hipster bar of Highland Square. Whether you are looking for drunk food or just a quick bite to eat, Mr. Zub's is where it's at. It's the Bobby Boucher of sandwiches: it's amazingly good, yet people don't understand how the hell it got so good. Let me explain WHY I made a movie reference. For starters, "The Waterboy" is ALWAYS on TV. Secondly, Mr. Zub's names all of their sandwiches after movie characters, movie quotes, movies, and Lisa Simpson (well, she was in "The Simpsons Movie", but she's not most famous for being a character in that). They all come with tots - perhaps itself a reference to "Napoleon Dynamite" - that are golden, crispy, and delicious. They have 30-40 sandwiches, I think, and they are all different, but in a very good way. They like to use bagels and cream cheese a lot, although I'm not positive if that's the norm. I think the point of this restaurant is to be bar food or drunk food first, then heavenly second. However, somewhere in the mix, they got the two reversed, and now everybody who is college-age is addicted to it. While a lot of people might look at this review and facepalm, this truly is one of Akron's best sammich places.

Delicious and healthy options! They have a vegetarian section of the menu too with veggies, hummus, falafel, pita, and all sorts of deliciousness. They give you a lot of food for your money, and it's in a nice chill location.

I don't know what everybodys smokin...but my daughter and I made our first visit there tonite around 9:30. Nobody there...place to ourselves. Got the 'best' samich recommended....the rocky b...and im tellin u what-- Mr Hero has a better quote/unquote---chessesteak!!!! And im not a fan of Mr Hero anymore truthfully. This was awefull. No seasoning whatsoever...not even salt. I ordered mushrooms on the side and they weren't flavored one bit. Came right out of a can/steam table. Well i conclude that when its 2 am and uve got your buzz on.....a shoe w sum A1 wld taste good!! Been there..done that. College kids are loyal ....but obviously have no sense of taste. Blah...no flavor- chewy...bland cheesesteak. Tots were good.....we wont go back. I can make a killer samich at home and save $10

LOVE IT! Amazing sandwiches, very tasty. I have eaten here several times and never been disappointed. I like their unique theme and my husband and I always enjoy going through the list of sandwiches and talking about the movies that the names came from. I wish it was closer to my house, but if I am in Highland Square I am definitely stopping in (which says a lot since there is a Chipotle across the street and who doesn't love their burritos?) The restaurant itself is very small with plastic booths like a fast food place, and cold! I usually leave my jacket on or do take out. Not a huge deal, just something to keep in mind during the winter months.

Perfect place to go for a great sandwich for lunch or dinner. This is a favorite of mine and my husbands. They have all kinds of sandwiches with creative movie names. The sandwiches are made fresh and are the perfect size. Not too big or too small. Get the fried jalapeño ravioli!! It is absolutely amazing as well as their pasta salad.

I've never been here before 2:30am. But I think I like it that way. My go-to is the Jason Voorhees (a steak & egg sandwich on a bagel.) The only down-side at 2:30 in the morning is waiting 20-25 minutes for a sandwich. It's worth it though. You'd be hard-pressed to find some better sandwiches in Akron. Especially at 3am.

My pals Tyler, Ashley, Layne, and I were in Akron to read at the Big Big Mess Poetry series last weekend, and we were treated to some Zubs before heading to the reading. Mr. Zubs is a rad little sandwich shop attached at the hip to The Matinee, where you can enjoy a plethora-board of sandwiches named after various iconic movies like the Dirk Diggler (a foot-long hotdog a la Boogie Nights) or the Rick Deckard (a buffalo chicken sandwich named after the protag of Blade Runner). The menu was put together by someone with an obvious boner for typography, though I have to admit, it was a bit daunting due to the sheer size of the menu and the all-caps text. I love the look of it, but there was some readability sacrificed. The cool part about its Siamese twin situation with The Matinee is you can get some good brew to wash down your sandwiches, which I didn't notice until we were on our way out, but it's okay, because I was on the hunt for bourbon. And everyone knows, no beer before liquor if you're in for a long night. Ashley and I both put down the above-mentioned Deckard, which was awash in a spicy good buffalo sauce and the bread was perfect. My only complaint is the chicken wasn't apt to staying in the bun, so I kept having to stuff pieces of chicken back into the sandwich. Tyler doubled-down with the Hightower (Police Academy), which was a monstrosity of a sandwich containing an abundance of macaroni & cheese and bacon, stuffed between two pieces of toast. Vegetarian options here are plentiful, too, as Layne and our hosts were primarily vegan/vegetarian, and all of them went away happy, though I didn't take note of what they were scarfing. I didn't get any pictures of the food, because I'm new at this whole food blogging thing. Sue me. So there it is. Mr. Zubs in Akron, OH. A perfectly sound place to get a good sandwich, beer, and some tater tots in northeastern Ohio. Full review at: putitinyourface.net/2012…

After a night of drinking in Highland Square, my friends and I were hungry. I was told our only option at that time of night was Taco Bell or Mr. Zub's. Needless to say, it was my first time at Zub's and it was way more than I thought it would be. Although the place was packed, my food came promptly and was delicious. The environment is a typical "deli-style" joint, but if you ask me, that adds to the charm....and even makes it better. The items on the menu are based on names of famous movie characters...I was thrilled to see the Lenton special was "Steve Zissou Beer Battered Fish." This place is excellent, the food is inexpensive and tasty, and its open till the wee hours of the morning. I'll definitely be back.

Sweet-ass sandwich joint in Highland Square, a.k.a. the promised land of Akron hipsters. My skinny jeans meter was in the red zone the whole time I was here. Seriously, this place is one of the most inventive and delicious casual eateries I've been to in Northeast Ohio. With a cinematic-inspired menu and friendly service, I gotta say that I wish I lived closer to this place. The Max Fisher club sandwich alone made my evening -- that's how badly I need a girlfriend.

Probably my favorite thing about living in the Highland Square area. Absolutely amazing. Go there, because you won't be disappointed.

Wow, for a sandwich place, so good. I wish they had one up here in Cleveland.

I will be back for sure! I ordered the Craig Jones and it was amazing. They even gave us complimentary fried dough sticks with chocolate and powdered sugar.

This is a nice little sub place in Highland Square. The prices are pretty good, and the ingredient quality is definitely higher than a Subway or Quiznos. It's nice to get a sub with some unusual ingredients, rather than the standard green peppers and lettuce variety at Subway. Also, the movie theme is cool as well. It's a solid way to name subs and stick in the minds of customers. This is a good place for lunch or a late night snack on the weekend.

I moved to Highland Square to be closer to this place. Well, it's a bonus, anyhow. Mr. Zub's is without a doubt THE best sandwich place in Akron. And I say that knowing what other sandwiches Akron has to offer. What makes Mr. Zub's the best? The combinations of ingredients. The film references. The goddamn TOTS. The sandwiches are themed after characters from movies and named after them as well, which is an interesting way to create food. The majority of the food has a good half inch of custom cream cheese and the bread is similarly custom. The actual filling ranges from sprouts and lettuce to roast beef, bacon, and onion rings. Everything is cooked on the griddle. I love that. Everything that is hot is hot from cooking and not nuking. How fantastic! The place is attached to the Matinee bar and you can carry your drinks from one place to another without having to go outdoors. It's open later than the bars close and really, after having delicious and interesting food available, what more could you want than having it available with beer until 3am?

great happy hour specials. fabulous bartenders. strong pours. the best jukebox in the greater akron area. house made fruit infused vodka. pool table. great little alley in the back for smoking. wii and whatnot set up for play. the matinee is like thursday's little sister. it smells nicer than thursdays, thats for sure. and it's a lot smaller. there is no dance floor, but there are plenty of dance-able tunes. it definitely has a cozy feeling to it. there is live music often. it's the perfect monday night bar... or the perfect place to grab a drink or two before heading to thursday's.

I've put off writing a review for The Matinee for far too long. What started off as the best new bar in Highland Square had eventually ALSO become the best new drunken eating spot to boot. Part of what made me procrastinate was that I was really hoping that Mr. Zub's was actually a separate business and that I would score the first review, but alas, Mario told me that it isn't so, which is why I write this today. The bar is one of Akron's finest drinking spots for the hipster kids, the young and the aging. For being such a small bar, it's rather impressive how well the stage contains the live music nights. If I'm in Akron, it's inevitable that my first stop is going to be The Matinee. I can confidently say that 9 times out of 10, I'll run into someone that I know. Now for Mr. Zub's... There is a place in Broad Ripple, Indy, that I could compare this place to, but that wouldn't likely help most of you. For those from Indy, it's sort of like Ripple Bagel & Deli, but without the bagel theme. You'll find everything from rather conventional sandwiches, to the highly creative and decadent. So when the clock strikes 2AM, you can walk in here and pretend like you're going to get one of the healthier options and walk out with a heavy gut full of tasty goodness. The best part is that though, to me, they feel like two different places, you're more than welcomed to bring your drinks and foods back and forth 'til your heart's content. Or until you can't walk without assistance. The combination of these fine establishments is but another fine addition to the Nemr Dynasty.

This place is an absolute godsend for the nights where you're at the Matinee or Annabells poisoning your liver. Greasy sides, giant sandwiches, and a loud, drunken clientele? It's not the best food you'll ever eat sober, but it is the best when you're intoxicated. And sometimes, really? That's all that matters.

    I. LOVE. This place! Sandwiches are amazing, soup of the day is always excellent, and the funnel cake fries are to die for. I am happy to go 20mins out of my way to get here. Akron should be famous for this place.

5 stars for Mr. Zubs, 3 for Matinee. Mr. Zubs is amazing. I haven't gotten very far through the menu because I start at the top and keep reading til I find something I must eat immediately. It doesn't take long. The first time, I made it to the second sandwich on the list. Everything I've had (and everyone else I've talked to who's been there) is delicious. My favorite kind of food. As an added bonus, you can bring your beer from Matinee (connected) or have your food brought over to you at Matinee. Nothing against Matinee, there's just not a ton of room for hanging out and the beer selection's not that great. If it's not too crowded, it's fine to sit at the bar. It's just not my favorite place in highland square. The bathroom's nice and clean though which is a plus. Best thing about Matinee is Mr. Zubs. It's a must.

i fucking love this place. amazingly tasty food weather you are drunk or not. cant beat it, even in the daytime this place is a good place to eat. personally i get the ducky or the margo. this is the only place i ever eat vegan or veggie because it tastes supergood and the cooks are good at what they do. hit it up around one if your out on the weekend so you can beat the bar close rush. you can take your food over to the matinee to eat if theres room, or you can order from there and they will bring it to you. from deli sammiches to bagles to soup to whatever everytime i barcrawl up there if i havent drank away all my money, the last of it goes to zubs. btw get the funnel cake fries too. they arent mentioned much on the menu, but its just like from the carnival!

We went there for the first time last evening. Our five year old had The Hightower (macaroni and cheese with bacon), my wife had the Mr. Pink (BLT), and I had the Rocky Balboa. All of them where delicious. The menu is great, it was as much fun reading the menu as eating the food.

  • Jay S.

I've only been to the bar part once and it was decent, but the real goods are at the food side called Mr. Zubs. It doesn't have a listing in on Yelp so Im gonna say here that they have some sweet food and its open real late, like 2 a.m. Try the Uncle Rico. Anything with tater tots on it is A-Okay in my book.

Great sandwiches, crazy menu with something for everyone, vegetarian too. Was here for lunch during the week for work. Enjoyed my sandwich, and good service so much, I came back for lunch again the next day. I can only imagine late night after a nearby show, and a few beers.

This place is awesome, best sandwiches anywhere! The Duke is the perfect combo of meat, bread, sauce and spice. The Lisa Simpson is the biggest and best grilled cheese ever!!! Love to go here anytime we're around Highland Square. Recommend it for the whole clan!!!!!!

Mr. Zubs is amazing! Over 20 sandwiches named after famous movie characters, such as the Uncle Rico. Always have a soup of the day, it has a bar next door and is open until 3am. Love it.

  • Doug W.

  • Jim W.

My friend took me here last time I was home. SO GOOD! SO MANY CHOICES! Awesome when you're buzzed! Super great service, and genious sandwiches. Next time I want a sandwich with tater tots on it. It may make me plan another trip home just for that. Seriously, that good.

Probably my favorite thing about living in the Highland Square area. Absolutely amazing. Go there, because you won't be disappointed.

Wow, for a sandwich place, so good. I wish they had one up here in Cleveland.

Usually have had a couple drinks by the time I've ordered my food. Never disappointed by the outcome. Love their hours. Wish they had more vegetarian specials and soups!

This is a nice little sub place in Highland Square. The prices are pretty good, and the ingredient quality is definitely higher than a Subway or Quiznos. It's nice to get a sub with some unusual ingredients, rather than the standard green peppers and lettuce variety at Subway. Also, the movie theme is cool as well. It's a solid way to name subs and stick in the minds of customers. This is a good place for lunch or a late night snack on the weekend.

I will be back for sure! I ordered the Craig Jones and it was amazing. They even gave us complimentary fried dough sticks with chocolate and powdered sugar.

Love it.

i fucking love this place. amazingly tasty food weather you are drunk or not. cant beat it, even in the daytime this place is a good place to eat. personally i get the ducky or the margo. this is the only place i ever eat vegan or veggie because it tastes supergood and the cooks are good at what they do. hit it up around one if your out on the weekend so you can beat the bar close rush. you can take your food over to the matinee to eat if theres room, or you can order from there and they will bring it to you. from deli sammiches to bagles to soup to whatever everytime i barcrawl up there if i havent drank away all my money, the last of it goes to zubs. btw get the funnel cake fries too. they arent mentioned much on the menu, but its just like from the carnival!

We went there for the first time last evening. Our five year old had The Hightower (macaroni and cheese with bacon), my wife had the Mr. Pink (BLT), and I had the Rocky Balboa. All of them where delicious. The menu is great, it was as much fun reading the menu as eating the food.

  • Matt S.
