10 years ago, the Patron shot-blended marg-Coronita concoction would have won me over. It was impressive, no doubt, aaaand I only needed *one* of those, thankyouvery much. But other than that, Blockheads was pretty solidly average. On a random weekday the wait was a bit long to get a cramped table next to an even more cramped table. Service was good, and I really liked how I could customize my chicken brown rice concoction (a nice healthier change of pace from a weekend of gutbomb NYC tourist food). Food was nothing to write Yelp I mean home about, pretty average faux Mexi-merica fare. I'm guessing the place is amazing for cheap crazeballs margaritas with friends in a lively young-ish atmosphere. Go for those, not with the expectation of amazinggg food. I'm sure there are much more authentic and flavorful Mexican spots around the city.

I have no idea why this place has 3.5 stars. Seriously no idea. The drinks were fine. Not great but fine. The chips are served to you in a plastic bag that you open. If I found out they actually make the guac and/or salsa in house I would be shocked. The food was ok at best. Boyfriend had no major complaints about his tacos. I had the mini quesadilla with salad which was meh, I could have made a better one myself at home. No dressing whatsoever on the salad, which is fine but jeez at least throw some salt and lime juice on it. On the bright side, our waiter was a nice guy and they have lots of options for vegetarians and vegans. I would not come back.

Omg how I hate the seating at this place. It almost feels like a fire Hazard!!! The food is good but this place gets so crowded. Look for another blockheads!

  • Isabella M.

I would say be careful with this place. It can be good: portions are fair, free chips and salsa, good drinks and variety of menu choices... But it can also be bad: slow/untrustworthy service, extremely loud to the point of not being able to think let alone have a conversation, and bizarrely over priced menu items/substitutions. Beware of drunken patrons, but the portions are pretty big and the food is relatively good. 3 stars because of the attitude/obnoxious and loud atmosphere.

The drinks are very good!! Hate the tacky plastic cups but they are delicious. It very really loud!!! I would deff come back!

Love that they have vegan options. Price and taste is ok, by this I mean I rather go to chipotle. The only plus is their wide range of choices. The lunch deal is more worth it. So I would suggest trying it for lunch. Employees are friendly and they kept refilling out salsa and chips free of charge!

This venue is OK. It's a small place as are the other locations. I don't know why but they are. The drinks are mediocre but the foods better. The quesadillas with cheese are great so be sure to get them :)

This place is AWESOME. I went here with a friend looking for some food. We walked down 2nd, trying to find a place to go, and withing the mass of Italian places sat this random "Mexican diner." We thought we'd check it out. We walked in and got prompt service, and ordered our food. They brought out some chips and salsa for free, and then we ordered our drinks. We got Bulldogs. Oh my god those Bulldogs. They may seem a bit steep, and it may be because we hadn't eaten much before then, but these things were amazingly boozy. And this is coming from two frat boys with heavy experience in intoxicating beverages. The Bulldogs completely made the experience for me, and that coupled with some decent, cheapish Mexican food and free chips makes me one happy camper. Come and check this place out, because you haven't had a margarita bomb until you've had it here.

I already posted my review about Blockheads in general on the Murray Hill location page, but I felt it was necessary to at least post a short review on the 2nd Ave location as it is the one I frequent the most! Either I've been extremely lucky or they're just that good, but I've never had a problem getting a table here! Service is good even when it's crazy busy, which it usually is, so I'm happy about that. Food and drinks are the same, which is what you'd expect from a chain restaurant (same quality across the board). What else can I say except... VIVA LA BLOCKHEADS!

  • Danan R.

The food here is decent and the prices are reasonable for the area. My chicken burrito was solid with plenty of chicken, sour cream, beans, cheese, guacamole, and rice. The chicken was decently tender and flavorful, especially paired with the guacamole/sour cream blend. Yes, it was over $13 but it is big enough to last 2 meals, especially since they give you plenty of complimentary chips and salsa. They also have plenty of vegan options, too. That def. gets them an extra star b/c vegan cheese and tofutti are hard to find in a Mexican restaurant. A good, solid place in Midtown with generous portions of reliable classics.

I have been a big blockheads fan for years now and this location by far is the best. For best experience go Monday thru Thursday, however if you go during peak times this location handles seating very well and very organized!! Always loyal to my Grande Blackflower and chicken quesadilla Grande-yummmmmm but also love their tacos and some of the burritos are good. With service it's hit or miss, some waiters are good, some are not but nothing to angry yelp about. Deff must try!! If you can't make it here, try east/west 50s location but beware of wait service at west 50!

  • Lyndsi V.

I used to love Blockheads... not for their food, but their cheap margaritas. But, don't be fooled by their "loyalty" cards. They are full of crap. I have several 100 points which are supposed to give you coupons for the next time you come in. I was told by the servers at this location and at the 33rd Street location that I was supposed to print them off from the computer. I was then told by their customer service rep that I was supposed to get them from the restaurant. I say don't get the loyalty card, it's nonsense. Just say no thank you and order another Margarita.

  • Liz K.

The frozen margaritas are $4-5, the burrito is quite big, and the servers are usually very nice. But it's all downhill from there. The wait for a table, even at 9:30pm, can be upwards of an hour on Fridays and Saturdays, and the order in which people are seated doesn't always make sense. For example, our group of three was repeatedly told we were "next" but watched multiple parties of two and four who all arrived after us be seated before us. The hostess wasn't outright rude, but she refused to acknowledge that we'd been waiting way too long, or that those tables for 4 were just like the one for 3 we seemed to be waiting on, and just continued parroting that we'd be next. Once inside, it's loud and cramped. The food is ok, but neither authentic Mexican nor especially tasty. The complimentary chips are dropped off at your table in a plastic bag, which you open and put in the metal bowl. The salsa is in a little plastic condiment cup. The menu changed a couple months ago, and is now more limited. Some of it just doesn't make sense; you can't order a plate of rice and beans anymore, but you can order then as sides if you get an entree (most of which have beans in them anyway so you wouldn't want beans as a side). If you want guac, it's only $1.25 extra, but it comes in a little condiment cup on the side. If you want it IN your burrito/quesadilla, you have to order it "super" ($2), which also has an upgrade to a fresh salsa. There is one toilet for the entire restaurant, and it is located in a tight space right between the kitchen and dish washing room. So there is always a line, and there is nowhere for those people to stand without being in the way of servers and busboys carrying dirty dishes. The restroom itself is pretty much the size of one on a plane. Sometimes, Blockheads is just what you need--a place with cheap frozen margaritas that's loud enough for you and your friends to be rowdy and laugh hysterically without bothering anyone, and where you can stay for as long as you want without feeling pressured to leave. But honestly, it's not worth more than a 20 minute wait. Go to a different Blockheads location, or pay a little more and go elsewhere in midtown, or just buy your burritos/quesadillas/tacos from a foodcart and get cheap drinks afterward.

You can't see this, but I'm twisting my hand back and forth at the wrist so as to say, "eh, this place is so-so." I think Blockheads is an American restaurant that's trying to be Mexican. The margaritas were pretty good, although rumor has it that they used to be a dollar cheaper. Service wasn't bad - especially considering how crazy busy it was there. My friend had a rice bowl and i had the rice and beans platter with vegetables on the side. The veggies seemed to have been marinated in something very salty. The 'Mexican rice' was decent, and you can't really do black beans and cheese incorrectly! That being said, the cheese wasn't melted all the way (you know, where you have to cut it with the side of your fork?)... Wouldn't avoid this place in the future, but wouldn't pick it out of a crowd of delicious restaurant options either.

I can't get over how different this blockheads is compared to the TERRIBLE one on the upper east side (see my other review if you are curious...). I mean the menu is exactly the same, the prices are the same, the set up is relatively the same, but the experience couldn't be more different. Every time I have been here, the service has been great! They have always been very accommodating and friendly. The hostesses at this location are able to maintain their cool despite the huge crowds and still be friendly and keep things under control. We come here a lot on fridays for happy hour, and there is almost always a wait. They have a little bar area here that you can stand at while you wait, so we usually do that and order some margaritas. They'll even give you chips if you wait long enough. The bar tenders are really nice and work really fast. We sat down with a group of 6 rather quickly last week, and our server was great! He was so nice and very attentive. Didn't mind us taking forever to make up our minds then changing them. It's definitely close quarters, but that's just what to expect at blockheads. The margaritas are strong, cheap and delicious. The nachos are great and come with tons of guacamole. Our server was really cool about splitting the check (I don't know if they are all this way). I really love blockheads, and its a great spot to come after a long day of work. This blockheads needs to mentor their UES location, because I refuse to go back to that one!

Nothing amazing, but good grub. Super vegan friendly. Came here after a long day of karaoke at Karaoke Duet 48 with 5 other people. We were seated immediately and given free chips and salsa (which were refilled whenever we went through them). I got a tofu burrito, made it vegan (vegan cheese & tofu sour cream), added guac, subbed brown rice for spanish, and subbed whole wheat tortilla for white. Burrito was massive and even though I could have been good with half of it I had the whole thing. It definitely was no culinary masterpiece, but it was a pretty good burrito. (I was especially underwhelmed after just recently consuming the masterpiece that is the Burrito at Candle 79, so don't mind me) When it first came out my friend got my burrito with regular sour cream and I got hers with tofu sour cream. I told the guy and asked if he was sure mine was vegan and without hesitation he said he would totally redo the order right away just in case and that he didn't want to make any mistakes. That was great and he was a great waiter. Nobody was dissatisfied we all walked away full and happy. The only cons not associated with food with this place are that it's pretty loud and a tad bit cramped. The bathroom is in the kitchen which is pretty awkward. It's also a tiny bathroom, but I kind of expected it anyway. If you're in the area and wanting burritos and/or margaritas with some friends this is where you want to be, otherwise I wouldn't really go out of my way.

Came here with my bf. there were empty tables, but the hostess informed us it would be a 20 minute wait (really? I can SEE tables behind her lol) and that we can get started at the bar. The bartender is chill, I order a frozen margarita with fruit punch flavoring, it's strong and tasty, and only 5 bucks. We pay the bar bill and our table is ready. They seat us at this weird table in the corner, the next table is blocking us in, kind of claustrophobia inducing. The food was pretty good, we ordered guacamole to go along with the chips, I got the bean and cheese burrito with a side of sour cream and more guacamole. The side of guacamole was overkill but the whole thing was really big, the quesadilla is enough to split between two. My bf got a salad which he enjoyed. It's a chill spot, with a chill vibe, and great food in huge portions. I'm definitely going back, it's right down the street and the drinks are cheap (I'm a big fan of tequila)

This is horrible. Awful. Taco bell with booze and chipotle aioli. I wouldnt recommend this to my enemies. Crime against humanity.

I got into the city late on Thursday and needed a bite to eat. There was a bit of a wait, but it was well worth it. My friend and I ordered the Bulldog specialty drink. Wow! Take about a "deal" in the city. A margarita with a shot and a Corona beer. Doesn't sound tasty? It did take a sip to get use to, but for the price I couldn't complain. As for the food? I was surprised with the portion. I got a giant chicken burrito with guac for $12. I can't imagine a better deal in the city for the price.

If you are in the area and in need of a quick fix, definitely consider this place. It is a small restaurant and seating is pretty cramped, but that is what makes this place awesome, its atmosphere. Every time I visit this place I go through the same routine. 1) Order my favorite Jamaican Jerk Chicken Burrito 2) Eat all of the chips with salsa dip that is on the house. (If still craving more, order the guacamole dip, it is amazing) 3) Optional- order anything that is blended with ice from their drink menu, it is all amazing. 4) Stuff face with Jamaican Jerk Chicken 5) Walk or crawl out of this place happy. =) I gave it a 4 star instead of a 5 because depending where you end up sitting, it may not be all that comfortable.

  • Regular G.

Ok I totally missed it. I get the vibe, I get the "mexican party meets CBGB" atmosphere. You're super hip...fine. Now make me a margarita that doesn't taste like cheapo bottle mix with a hint of pee. I'm sorry I just didn't like it. But, I did like the frozen one, that was tasty. I got a Jamaican jerked chicken burrito. Its was a phony attempt at jerk, but I digress. Not a fan, it did fill me on a rainy day but I wouldnt go there again

Stopped by here with some friends to get drinks. I highly recommend the sangria bulldogs. I had already eaten by the time we had gotten there so I can't comment on the food, but I look forward to trying the burritos next time! The seating area inside is a little tight so if you have a large group it's probably best to sit outside.

  • Lianna P.

Eh. I've been here twice now. The margaritas are good, but the food is pretty bad and the service isn't great either. The place is tiny and so loud, you can't even have a conversation. If you want cheap, strong drinks and a college-esq atmosphere, this is a good place to go. If you're over the age of 22, I suggest going elsewhere.

Went here for lunch on a Saturday. Had the Mexican chicken wrap. Really good!they don't try to be "Mexican"; the music was standard stuff rather than the usual Mexican, and the decor has lots of sock monkey stuff. Good place, good food, good service.

  • Pia M.

For the price you pay, you get a LOT of food and it's good, fresh quality food. My fave is the chicken burrito. The shaken margaritas are yummy (though slightly weak for my taste), the service is friendly, and the patio in the back is cute though somewhat reminiscent of a prison basketball yard in the daytime (not that I'd know... seriously, if I were in prison, I would NOT be playing basketball... I'd be doing hair or something). I've also been told the bulldogs are good/deadly but I have yet to try one.

  • Amy L.

The margaritas (and their price) CANNOT BE BEAT!! The complementary chips and salsa are also very good. However, the food is decent at best. It has no real flavor and is not what I would call authentic Mexican food. For what the food is, it is also way overpriced. The atmosphere is lough, but can be fun if just going for drinks. That is exactly what I recommend - drinks only at Blockheads.

  • Katherine M.

If I were rating just on food quality and taste, I would have given Blockhead four stars. However, the delivery is really beginning to frustrate me. Blockheads recently changed its ordering options on seamless. Instead of ordering a jerk chicken burrito or a BBQ beef burrito, they have a build your own burrito concept. In theory, this is great. But the kitchen has yet to get my order right. One time, I ordered a mini-burrito and got the large one. Another time, I ordered a burrito with jerk sauce, it came sans sauce. The third time i ordered two burrito, one with BBQ and the other with Jerk sauce, both came sans sauce. It's extremely frustrating. I'm going to give Blockheads one more chance, but if they can't fix this issue, then I am going to x them off my delivery list.

Great food, fast service and very reasonable. The portions are huge and healthy. Drinks are good. This is a good place to start or end a night out if you don't want a drawn out dining experience. Oh yeah, the atmosphere is festive and fun.

I must say the waitress was really nice to bad she forgot to place our order and 1 hour and 10 minutes later we left hungry while people that arrived 10 minutes before we left were already eating. I would definetely not recommend this place unless you have a 3 hour lunch break.

How is it possible that I have never reviewed Blockheads? Epic fail. I LOVE Blockheads. In fact, love is an understatement. My favorite thing is the quesadilla with tofu, or the rice & bean burrito with tofu. Everything you order will be huge and unmanageable, so you'll need to be prepared to box at least half for leftovers. The best thing about this place is its tofu. Grilled and marinated, a great combination. Another favorite, if dining in, are the margaritas. They have a wide variety of them, and the basic margarita is only $3! Granted, the food items are a little pricey, but given the quality and quantity of the dishes, it's all pretty worth it. I would not recommend coming here during happy hour if you're with a big group, because it'll be impossible to get a table. Luckily, there are several locations, so you could always hop to another part of town, and try your luck.

The Go To Spot for drinks on a budget! $4 Frozen Margaritas + Free Tasty Tortilla Chips and Salsa Sauce= Afterwork Chill Spot. They also have Perfect "Post Happy Hour Munchies". The Soy Sour Cream is really good for the "Veggies" reading.

  • Genevieve M.

I've been here multiple times, and I've had a great experience each time. The menu states that all of their items are gluten free, except for the wheat tortillas. And they have large, gluten free tortillas! So you can actually enjoy a burrito! However, the one thing is that the gluten free burritos (at least the ones I've had) are never completely folded? So you can't pick it up and eat it very easily. I'm not sure why they do this-I'm definitely not complaining, because maybe they do this to prevent order mix-ups or cross-contamination. Tastes good either way! The $4 margaritas are great, and they use Sauza tequila, which is gluten free (most tequilas are naturally, but lower-quality tequilas can be diluted, so it's good to check). It's $1 extra for a flavor. Grandma's iced tea is also good, and prettyy strong! The service is also great; the host, bartender, and waitstaff that I've talked to were always happy and helpful. The only thing is that this place gets crowded pretty fast, and I'm not sure what the deal is with the outdoor seating in the back-sometimes it's available, sometimes it's not, so maybe it fills up quickly or is used for private events. Enjoyable and straightforward gluten free eats :)

The steak chimichurri burrito has the potential but at $14.50 with no lettuce, pico or grilled onions, makes it hard to go back. It's overly expensive for that price. I don't care if this is NYC but you can easily why, and don't judge, Chipotle is killing it. My buddy and I were here at a low time (only two tables occupied) but it still took over five minutes for waters and 10 before that for acknowledgement. Sorry but I won't be coming back for anything but drinks. Just not worth it.

I've been to a number of the Blockheads locations but I havn't been to one in a while. They are pretty consistent in quality and menu, although they have a tendency of updating the menu once in a while. Their margaritas are like none other. They are delicious ( not too tart, not too strong-tasting), very strong- I usually just have one or at most 2, and obviously, the best priced that you can get in New York! as I do miss their "make-your-own-quesillda," some of the newer ones that have been added to their menu are pretty good. I also love their chips and salsa. The atmopshere is so much fun, plenty of fun party music, hip and fun decor and lights and overall a great experience! Whether it's a party, girls night or one-on-one, You can't go wrong!!

Good Heavens, how much I love this place. Yes, it's tiny and cramped. Yes, it gets packed. Yes, the service isn't always the best. Yes, there's usually a long wait. But have you tried their burritos and margaritas? If you have, you understand why I love it. I've been here a few times throughout the last 5 years or so and always have a good time. The margaritas are so cheap (around $5-7) and boozy - I have a good buzz after just two or so. My favorite drink is the White Flower, which is a frozen margarita mixed with white sangria. All of their Bull Dogs are great, as well as their flavored frozen margaritas (try the peach). I LOVE their steak chimichurri burrito (guac and sour cream on the side, please). For a while, they only had chicken and other burritos, which were good as well... so I was ecstatic when they finally added a steak option. The steak is marinated in chimichurri sauce and cooked deliciously - pick what kind of tortilla, rice, beans, salsa, etc., you want and wait for deliciousness. If you come on a weekend, come early, as it starts to get packed around 7 or 8pm. After that, it will be a LONG wait. Don't come with too big of a group (maybe 4 or 5, max) as there's not much space here. They have a backyard which opens up in the summertime and, though it is surrounded by buildings, it's nice to get a fresh air between sips.

Love this Blockheads location for vegan-friendly affordable post-work Mexican and margaritas. The tequila upgrades are reasonable, the food is totally decent, and the environment is very low key/casual. Perfect for after work happy hour/Taco Tuesday! I go pretty regularly. Definitely a bit of a bar atmosphere -- a little noisy, tv, sometimes a bit rowdy. Go early for a table without a wait. Guac and salsa are awesome. Would be difficult for a large group -- definitely go early to try to seat 6 and up.

Blockheads is a solid spot if you're looking for inexpensive mexican food and cheap margaritas. The best part about this place is that they offer a ton of options for those who have specific food allergies (tofu sour cream for the lactose intolerant, for example). One thing to keep in mind is that this place has very limited seating and like three bar stools, so if you're headed there at prime time be prepared to wait.

  • Destiny D.

I mean, you can't go wrong with $4 margaritas. Well maybe you can. But not a this place. Just know that you're going to Blockheads, not a fancy, high-class Mexican restaurant. Blockheads is pretty much the Dallas BBQs of Mexican food but I loooooove it. The drinks are def. worth it and are super cheap! The one on 2nd ave is my fav location. Kinda small, but still a nice time!

I know I really shouldn't go out for happy hour drinks as much, but it is too hard to kick the habit, and too hard to pass up after stressful days. I guess I'm really falling into the post-college, adult lifestyle. I met up with a few friends here for happy hour since it's near one of their work places and she loves it...plus, I've never been, and I often hear Blockheads being the Mexican Dallas BBQ for HH. Great atmosphere for a Midtown hub; it's like walking into a restaurant in the south or in Mexico. I got a Passion Fruit Frozen Margarita since the Blockheads specials were too much for me to handle. It was really good, and pretty strong. Then again, I'm a lightweight and three-quarters of it already had me sweating. We also ordered some food and they were exceptional. The Cheese Quesadillas were totally off the hook and heavenly; the melted cheese was everything. Dip this in sour cream all over, and you'll forget the world. We also had the Nachos Grande which had a bit of everything: guacamole, black beans, melted cheese, and the soft tomatoes were just amazing. Eat this fast because it gets soggy really fast. I wouldn't recommend coming here if you're looking for a dinner meal, but definitely great to snack on something and have a few glasses. I'm not going to complain about the complimentary salsa and chips because...c'mon, are we really complaining about FREE salsa and chips?!

Came here after the last day of class with my roommate and a friend. I had been wanting to try this place for a while and was glad I could make it a celebratory one. While here, they gave us complimentary chips and salsa which were very good and we got several orders of it. Once it came time to order, I ordered their half quesadilla which came with a side salad. They also have on their menu so you can just order a whole quesadilla and get more quesadilla as opposed to a side salad, but I was really in the mood for a side salad. While the side salad really wasn't much of a salad, it was great to put inside of my quesadilla giving it a nice crunch. I ate the entire thing and loved every bite of it. Great portion and I recommend it for those who want to enjoy the Mexican cuisine without getting entirely bloated. Great place to grab drinks as well!

I ordered the Pork Tacos. Very tasty. It comes with rice and beans where are great. Drawback is they don't have any appetizers, which I found very odd except guacamole and chips. Staff was friendly too

My coworkers rave about this place but I wasn't too impressed. This place was packed on a friday night, 30min + wait. The music is so long that everyone is screaming to talk :/The margaritas triumphed my food by far - they are strong and taste great. I wasn't impressed by the Santa Fe Quesadilla - there was nothing special regarding it.

This place never disappoints me the food, no matter what you get is always good. The Spanish rice they have is amazing and they flavor their meat with just he right amount. Oh and let's talk about their drinks. They are always good no matter what flavor margarita you get. Get the large frozen! They last longer!! I've switched from the chicken quesadillas to the mini burritos and it was a good choice. The mini burrito is a perfect size for me. Chips and salsa served upon sitting and they are gooood. Love this place!

Burritos aren't bad. Nothing special. Served with slash from a jar and highly overpriced. $14 for a burrito. Chips are from a bag. There's better elsewhere for cheaper. Fine in a pinch. Service is mediocre if they they remember that you're there.

  • Stevie K.

OMG. $4 margaritas?!? Someone stop me. And $7 for a large?? Complimentary chips and salsa?! There are so many great things about this place, and the prices are definitely one of them. Food was pretty standard, but for a Midtown East joint, the prices were unbeatable. Pretty convenient location, close to the 51st street stop on the 6 train. The waitstaff was friendly enough, nothing effusive. 5 stars for mega cheap drinks. Also I've never had any trouble getting a table.

I guess I have to start by saying that I'm from California and I know Mexican food. HAHA JK, I am from CA but imagine? Anyways, if you want an authentic experience, don't go to a bar/restaurant known for its bro-iness. The food is actually really good. It's typical American Cantina food but with quality and consistency on point. I get the nachos, they're always good. Good portions, and not that expensive ($11). I also don't understand why everyone is so pretentious about Mexican food. This place isn't really set up or known to be "authentic". You can tell from, well the name. If you like heavy, comfort, hangover food, this is a great place. If you're looking for an authentic tour of Mexico on a plate, why do you take yourself so serious and yet still don't do your research? There are authentic places that try to be authentic, and there are just fun Americanized places that don't aim to be authentic. You don't go to taco bell when your craving taco bell, you go there when you want taco bell, or if you're stoned.

Loud but fun. Tight quarters. Got the GRANDE QUESADILLA and it was very filling. A little pricey for my taste, but great for an after-work meeting with friends. Lots of margarita choices.

I'll keep this short and simple :) I love, love, love this place. The margaritas are $5 and very tasty. The burritos fill you up. The quesadillas are also filling, and the portion sizes are very reasonable. If you're coming in on a weekend, I suggest you try to get there anytime between 6:30-7 before the rush. My friends and I didn't have to wait long for a table. The hostess definitely accommodated us from 3, then 5 total. I really appreciated that. The server was super friendly. Nice staff.

Found a fairly large piece of sharp plastic in their pork burrito approximately 2 bites in. Not only was it sharp, but I took it back to them to sort out where it came from... Turns out it's from neither their small or larger plastic To go containers. The piece I found is clear- their containers are opaque. Essentially, I bit into a piece of trash for which they cannot account. That's disconcerting, to say the least. If this isn't a public health violation, I'm not sure what is. Shame on you, blockheads. Shame on you. Never again.

Fun place to drink. Pricing is very good and the crowd on Sunday seems to be very fun loving and social. I can't comment much on the food but the 3 dollar mimosa special was awesome. The food here is pretty typical tex-mex style. Nothing special but nothing bad either.

Love the food. It's a small menu with basic Mexican food. Vegetarian options are great. The drinks are good too. I recommend downloading their app. After you earn some points you get $10 off your bill.

The food is mediocre, but it's an easy option if you're local. Or so it would seem. Except for the fact that EVERY time I order, they totally screw it up. And are just as inept at fixing it. Once I was told I would be credited (and never was, of course). Another time, when I called because something was missing from my delivery order l, they suggested I come to the restaurant to pick up the missing item. (What??) And every time the order takes over 2x longer than what it says on seamless (and I have to call to remind them to fill the order). Don't waste your time unless you're willing to tolerate a mess!

Pretty bad. 2nd star is because they were on time and the delivery guy was nice. Don't get the quesadilla.

I can not comment on the bar drinks, as we did not order any. Seems like Blockheads has changed from a great place for vegan / vegetarian options for Mexican food to a bar that offers some poorly prepared food. Should have figured this out from the menus presented to us. One nice, clean laminated menu for all the different bar drinks - and one tattered piece of paper listing the food items. Food menu states that they have Daiya (vegan) cheese, as well as a vegan sour cream. My dining partner has a turn-blue-and-stop-breathing allergy to all forms of dairy, so this was one of the primary reasons for choosing Blockheads for a quick dinner before the commute home. Our waitress told us 'sorry, have been out of the vegan cheese for weeks now - why don't you try the regular (dairy) cheese instead?' after we explained the seriousness of his allergy. He ordered a burrito, no cheese or sour cream. Guess what? Came with dairy sour cream on it. I ordered a make your own taco combo. Again, explained diet restrictions (allergy to peppers). Order came smothered in red peppers on both tacos and salad. Sent back, asking to change to a plain cheese quesadilla. Figured they can't mess up on that, right? Wrong. Waitress explained that most of the burritos and all of the quesadillas are premade, and can not be customized. So we are spending money for the same frozen foods I could get at the grocery store for half the price? I ended up with no meal. Dining companion spent $30 for one burrito dinner and an iced tea (again, made from powder). Hope the bar drinks are worth it, because they clearly want customers to be so drunk that they do not taste what they are eating. This place used to be a great option for vegan / vegetarian dining. Not anymore. The menu also pushed for the GF options, but seeing how they botched the no meat or dairy, I would not trust it. Never again!!!

I've been here a few times over the summer with work friends. I think everything is decent. Food, drinks, service, atmosphere. Cheap-ish, especially for lunch, and always super cramped. Some things are a little odd, like the fact they they have vodka but you can't order a vodka soda because it's not on the drink menu. Also, they have sangria, but not wine. Little confusing. Pro tip: they have a "patio" in the back, which seats about 14-16 people. However, there is an awning due to construction in the building, so it's actually darker than just sitting in the restaurant. Hah.

Ordered for pickup from seamless: a steak chimichurri burrito thanks to a frantic day at the office (dinner). Prices are alright, around $10-12 for a burrito. The place itself was nearly full at 6.45pm, and the server who helped me with my Seamless pickup was so smiley and friendly. However, it's pretty dark (albeit cozy) and slightly cramped. Fun place if you're with coworkers or friends....possibly a loose first date? Note: there's construction going on outside of the spot so Blockheads isn't visible from the street.

Honestly, I don't like this place because they mostly serve burritos and they discontinued their brunch menu items. However, the one thing that always keeps me coming back is one menu item, their tacos. I don't mind paying an extra $2 for a grilled steak chimichurri taco or a grilled fish taco. I order one of those along with a chicken taco which there is no additional charge for. If you want good deals on margaritas, this is the place. Whenever my wife does not pack lunch for me from home, I like to dine here and eat their tacos which is one of their lunch specials. Another great innovation of theirs is their smartphone app which is good for frequent customers and also gives you the option of paying via credit card or paypal through your phone.

DON'T go HERE!! Been going to Blockheads for years. Food was always the same. Drinks were good. Service was absolutely TERRIBLE!! 1. A new waiter had us wait for 15 minutes just to order food after we told him we were ready to order. 2. Another young waitress had a nasty attitude 3. Blockheads had a points rewards system where they would give you points for all the meals you had at any location. They DENIED my card that I have been using for years. I had so many points that I was told a few times I could have paid for $200 worth of food. 4. Manager lied to us about 2 $10 gift certificates. She said she would apply one and give us back one. Instead she wouldnt even address us as we left and asked for the 2nd one. DON'T go to this location. I am hesitant about bringing my big group of friends to any of them.

Visiting and met up with a cousin. Only planned to have drinks. I'm so glad i ordered a yummy burrito as well! I have no words other than delicious! Not sure how the wait would be if you have a large group.

  • Boya L.

Started out with fruity and fun margaritas. Love love love the mango flavored one. You can get them mixed and add raspberry and strawberry flavor combo. I wanted a burrito since I was starving and they are ginormous. They have many different combos to choose from. The yam stuffed one is great! I love yams and was my first time trying yam burrito and it seemed like the only special option other than tofu. They serve chips and good salsa on the side. The salsa was mildly spicy and tingly and. Service is good and the dudes are nice and kept refilling salsas and chips.

Been to this location twice. The first time, a weekday after work: ordered a frozen passion fruit margarita with my meal, which just ended up being a regular frozen margarita, but the server insisted it was a passion fruit one. The food was decent. The second time, a weekday late lunch: the food was decent again, but the experience becomes difficult when the server doesn't wait on you, but you keep waiting on the server for menus, to place your order, for an extra place setting and for water and an extra plate that never came. Mind you, the place is not busy after the lunch crowd rush. It was just a case of a forgetful server. Will probably try another location next time.

I love this place! It's my favorite Mexican restaurant in the city! Their every burrito is always good, and I love their frozen margaritas! Can't stop drink.:) if you're a margaritas lover, you must try here!

Well...that was a poor attempt at Mexican food. *sigh* 1 star goes for the service and the other star goes for the drinks. Our waiter was cool, took pics for our party and that compensated for never offering water. Kudos to the service, for it's a reason why this place got a star more than it should've. This Blockheads is located in like drunk central and so it had to stand out but it left something to desire for. Seriously, quesadillas at Applebee's are better than the one I had here. Like really? The other star goes to the margaritas. 2 margaritas and I was super happy, yay, no fail zone here. Environment is SUPER uncomfortable. Tight, small. Not enough lighting for a person expecting to get trashed. Mmmm... Wouldn't catch me here again, I was told to try out the Hell's Kitchen location though.

    (2)
  • Mark B.

A few friends and I seem to always find ourselves here for a happy hour, and for good reason! First off, the decor is reasonably "authentic" but the waiter was great! Kevin was fantastic, super friendly and very attentive. The drinks, and the food, is what we keep coming back for though. Their margaritas are seriously delicious and they have a great selection of all kinds of other things. Their food menu is a bit small but I think it's perfect for happy hour (nothing too heavy, all things are pretty good for snacking). I know, for a fact, that this will not be the last time we have a happy hour here, it's just a wonderful place.

    (4)
  • Harry H.

Faux retro exterior, a steep entrance, and no outdoor seating left me baffled that this spot is still so packed. I understand it's because of the drink prices, but the food here is so bad and so expensive that they flip the usual profit-on-drinks model and leave the customers as the suckers. Staff here was particularly rude to takeout customers, making their priorities clear.

  • Feroz Q.

This would be a 4 star review but the service was atrocious. The server wouldn't give us even 2 minutes to decide what we wanted. He kept coming over every 45 seconds to see if we had decided

  • Angela L.

Great margaritas and yummy burritos. The service was so-so, I think our server forgot that we wanted to order and were not just there for drinks so it took him a while to come back which was ok since we had our drinks and tortilla chips. Not too sure how bad the wait actually is, we were pretty lucky for a Friday night. My friend and I met up at 7 and got a seat for 2 right away. 2 more of our friends were joining us an hour later and they were very accommodating on giving us a bigger table when they got there. Although I did make sure to let them know that we were expecting more people as well! Everyone was very friendly! It's pretty tiny and the bathroom is located in an odd place but I think it adds character to blockheads. Looking forward to going back.

I came here with a girlfriend after dinner, because I heard they had bulldogs. I've always wanted to try a coronita, where the beer is upside down a margarita. We both had the patron bulldog, and two of those each we were both pretty good on the way home. Because we had dinner already, we didn't get to try anything on the menu. I'll be sure to bring my friends to blockheads again and try something something on the menu. I have to take a mental a note and not come on a weekday again, when I know I have work the next day!

If you're just trying to chill and get drunk come here but if you're looking for some good Mexican food look elsewhere! It's a very small space. Very dimly lit, limited seating and looks more like a bar. Let's start with the highlight: the drinks! They have many options for drinks. I guess they are famous for the bulldog but I opted for the margaritas. They have the grande size which was music to my ears! I tried the mango and also the guava. Both were great and made strong. My favorite was the mango. I will come back for the drinks! You get free chips and salsa as you sit, the salsa was great and perfectly spicy. Let's move on to the food. I ordered the chicken quesadilla. What I got was a hardened flat bread with a few pieces of chicken. Cheese was missing. I admit the chicken was seasoned well but c'mon man the quesadilla at Applebee's is better! Sad... My friend got the burrito and he seemed to enjoy that. Maybe I will try next time. If you're thinking of ordering the quesadilla. Don't bother! Service was ok nothing special. Had to remind him to get us water or refill but not horrible. Overall the drinks are great but not sure if it's worth the trip.

  • Stevie C.

Such an incredible menu! Everything is delicious (including the margaritas)! My favorite right now is the grilled chicken tacos with jerk sauce on the side. The burritos are chipotle size and packed full of flavor. Not a huge fan of raspberry but the raspberry margarita was great! The staff is also super friendly and has great suggestions if you want to try something new or break outside your norm. Definitely worth checking out.

  • Sara R.

The waiter was so handsome and the workers were so friendly ! The drinks were def an A+ ! So strong ! I got the bulldog henessey and my friend got a lemonade margarita. The food came in large portions so it was even enough for two people. Only downside is it was relatively noisy so you had to yell to have conversation.

I came here for a friend's farewell dinner. He already started happy hour at around 2pm somewhere else so he and a few others were tipsy. We had a large group and were able to snag seating outside. To me this is just an average Mexican place. I cant really rave about the food. It's a great place for happy hour, so don't expect gourmet. They serve Bulldogs for Jezz sake. I also appreciated that the tortilla chips were plastic wrapped. Salud!

  • Samantha S.

subpar overpriced Mexican. delivery orders have been inaccurate and management is useless. only saving grace is is that the guacamole portions are larger than other establishments for take out but the quality of it varies (sometimes bland)

  • Melanie Z.

Food isn't that great, but the margaritas are a good deal! Burritos are HUGE but frankly not exciting enough to try to finish a whole one. I gave up after a few bites and just opened it up and picked out the yummy bites.

    (3)
  • Janelle M.

Food gets me sick all the time. I dont know why. Doesnt have much flavor. Even the chips are blah.... Margaritas are either too sweet or too strong. Weird seating arrangement. Difficult to get through and too close to other tables. Will I go again? Yeah lol but only for drinks.

    (2)
  • Brittany P.

I'm a fan of the drinks more than the food from my experience. I had a patron mexican bulldog which was awesome and strong for being a featured drink. Ordered the beef picadillo burrito which was huge but lacked flavor for me except plain spice. It wasn't bad but wasn't anything I would rave about. Next time I go I think I'll try the tacos or a quesadilla. Drinks are cheap for NYC. Shots of sauza gold for $4.50 and frozen margaritas for $4 flat. Tequila shots came with salt on the shot glass and lime on the edge which was nice. I will return for more awesome drinks and less food.

  • Erika M.

Great food and cheap drinks but seriously terrible service. Didn't come here expecting crazy good service but after having the hostess give away the table we'd been promised and were waiting for, it took another 15 min before a waiter came over once we were seated. It took forever for our drinks and then they tried to overcharge us for drinks we never ordered. I get its not a fancy restaurant but they couldn't get even basic service right. It wouldn't have bothered me as much but when I'm watching the waitresses goofing around and talking while we're waiting for someone to finally take out order, it's very irritating. I've been a waitress before and it's just not acceptable especially when one of the managers is there, which he was.

Went for a student budget friendly birthday dinner with my friend. A mistake. A little bit pricey, seems that they use ready-made hard taco shells, found bones in my fish tacos. Guacamole not as good as in my favorite Mexican where better food is available for less money. Atmosphere was a little bit too much of a bar feel for my liking, it was loud and we were seated in the back and that's where people kept constantly passing for the bathroom. Nothing to go back for.

Love Blockheads! Sure, it s a chain, and they feature typical Mexican fare, but it's tasty, portioned just right, and it will put a smile on your face. Oh, and they have gluten & dairy free stuff for those of you who need it -- not me, though =) I eat anything and everything. This is one of my favorite locations of Blockheads (there are several in the city). This one is close to one of the gyms where I teach, so I can quickly make it there and refuel after a hard workout. Yeah, yeah, I know... I'm one of those folks who works out hard just to eat hard.... but that's the way it should be, right? =) As for the food, I typically get one of their super burritos--I've had them all, and they are delicious! My favorites are the chicken, shredded beef, and roast pork adobe. Another favorite of mine from the menu is the Nachos Grande. I typically get ground beef or chicken! Delicious!!! Note these ARE the piled kind... and they are awesome! So, I can't finish this review without praising their margaritas! First off the selection is huge--they even have fancy ones where they pour a Corona pony bottle upside down in the glass. My favorite is the Black Flower, which is 1/2 frozen margarita & 1/2 fruit sangria. Delicious & cheap! Oh, and get a couple of the grande sized ones, and you'll be stumbling out of that place.

  • Edgar P.

Great place, great drinks and great tasting food. I would give it a perfect rating except for a few things. Extremely crammed seating and menu that fluctuates. I've been going here for years and I've seen management attempt to substitute meat for more veggies and rolling a tortilla inside to give the illusion of a full taco. Not cool.

We were there 45 minutes before posted closing and the waitress met us at the door 'discouraging' us from coming in... telling us that they already did last call and they were closing in 15 minutes. Bulls**t!

I live in the area and I honestly love Blockhead's! The food is really good and inexpensive. Their frozen margaritas are pretty strong for just $4. For another buck you can add a flavor to them. The Mexican Salad is pretty good. Their guacamole is decent. The Burritos can be made how you like them. You can get a flour tortilla or wheat, so on and so forth. This is a pretty cool spot to have lunch or grab dinner and without breaking the bank.

  • Jamie C.

Blockheads is the place to go for a fun night out with friends. The Mexican food is delicious and the $4 frozen margaritas make every night better. The food is also extremely reasonably priced. You will never go wrong with the burritos and tacos!

My roommate and I come here every single time we are in NYC. service is great and the food/drinks are even better. Try the jerk chicken burrito or pork adobo. Both are great!!

  • Plain White T.

Great lunch specials! The steak chimichurri burrito is delicious, as well as the dressing in the Mexican salad. The grilled chicken isn't exactly "grilled" and does have greasiness to it; to me, it resembled pulled pork. The complimentary chips and salsa upon being seated was nice, and the salsa was perfectly spiced without being too hot. The guacamole is served cold and somewhat overpriced at $8 for the amount received. Everything here is very salty, so if you're sensitive to salt like I am, beware. I would return here for the cheap lunch specials and would like to try their "lunch-sized" margaritas as everyone seems to rave about them. Seating is tight so come before 1:00 for lunch.

    (4)
  • Jack M.

There are no lunch specials any longer. This place changes its menu like there's no tomorrow. They constantly play with price and portion size. I don't know how they have survived this way. The food is basic and good. Just don't get attached to any one idea. Anyone remember the shredded beef? Jerk burrito? Those were the days.

    (2)
  • Jon P.

This used to be a go to place for lunch, but they've recently gotten rid of the half price burrito lunch menu. Now it's nothing more than mediocre. Food isn't spectacular and servers aren't too friendly.

Shame on me. This is almost as bad as writing a review for Olive Garden (sorry if I've offended anyone). That being said I'll keep it short and relevant. Food is bland. Don't even try it if your hungry. Drinks are cheap! $8dollar bulldog =$4 margarita and $4 dollar beer. Always busy, and always drunk. Enjoy!

  • Ina L.

My boyfriend and I find ourselves at Blockheads very frequently, not because there aren't any other viable dining options, but because it their burritos are just that addicting! It is dimly lit, regardless of the time of day, which creates an intimate yet fun ambiance for diners. It can get loud, especially during peak hours after work and during the weekends, because they cram everyone in, to increase their turnover rate. They have lunch specials during the weekdays- $8 burritos, which is an incredible deal considering that they are usually priced at $12. And might I add, that their burritos are stuffed to the brink of popping, and are about a foot long! They do no cheap out on the meats, the rice, or the cheese. My all-time favorite is the Jamaican Jerk chicken burrito, a basic chicken burrito with an amazing sweet nutmeg, cinnamon, sugar based sauce that adds the perfect tanginess to the burrito! (Cue drool*) During the weekends, Blockheads becomes an even more fun restaurant, with young 20-something-year-olds, ready to head out into a night full of fun and/or drunken debauchery. I've done it on multiple occasions and still plan on doing it! PS- They have free and FAST delivery! I love you, Blockheads!

    (4)
  • Mindy T.

Meh.... Salsa that comes with chips is good because it has a little kick to it. I love lime juice in my guacamole, but I think this one had way too much lime. Ordered the Steak Fajita bowl to find out they are completely out of steak and shrimp on a Saturday night at 9pm. What??!? Settled for the grilled fish. It was ok. Drinks are cheap and strong. Server was attentive and she kept checking in on us occasionally, but not too much.

    (3)
  • Sasha G.

You do not come to Blockheads for food. You come for cheap margaritas but they force you to get food. No burritos, no booze. What? And they're rude about it. AND the food sucks. So now you know. At least you can get cheap booze & get a buzz for $10.

    (2)
  • Keith M.

Burritos are DELICIOUS. I come to NYC once a year and I always make sure to hit up this place during my stay. The place is always packed and there is a reason for that. It's good!

  • Christin M.

Best frozen margaritas hands down! While Blockheads offers all sorts of fun, fruity syrups (raspberry, mango, passion fruit, etc), I prefer mine sans extra flavoring with a salted rim. They are strong (perfect post-work drink) and delicious. Yes, the place gets loud and crowded but if you can find room at the bar while you wait for your table, the bartender will provide delicious salsa and chips (which you'll need to hold you over after your tasty, frozen margarita). Once seated, my go to food-wise is the Naked Pork Adobo Burrito - truly delicious and always welcome after a couple frozen 'ritas. The fact that everything is very reasonably priced merits a four star rating for Blockheads. So....why have I only doled out 3 stars you ask? Well, until Blockheads adds another restroom I'm holding the 4th star hostage. One bathroom stall for the entire restaurant? C'mon, you can't feed a whole restaurant delicious frozen beverages and spicy Mexican food and only provide one restroom!

My favorite spot if I want a cheap margarita and delicious guac! Have been to other locations downtown but this one is cute! Came here on a Wednesday night it was full but not packed. Me and my friend sat in the patio. Ashley was our server she was super fun, attentive and sweet! Got frozen margaritas (guava, raspberry) delicious! Then took two house shots which were also on point. Love blockheads

Always frequent this place. I came here for lunch more recently. Another good experience. They offer a lunch size mini margarita that is perfectly sized. I ordered the burrito and I enjoyed everything. It hit the lunch craving I was looking for. I was with 2 other people and they enjoyed their meals as well. It's a small place but the food and drinks are great. Will continue to come back.

    (4)
  • Andrew L.

Food is ok, but relatively inexpensive and served in large portions. During lunch they now do 50% off burritos which is great! What I usually go here is for the drinks with co-workers. The margaritas are cheap and potent. Have a couple of them and you will definitely be feeling it. The only problem is the service. Sometimes it's hit or miss and they can be very slow. There were a couple times during lunch when I needed another drink, but no one came until the end of the meal. Hopefully they can improve that.

Happy hour .... The best But don't order too much food Entrees are expensive and small.... Service is good, drinks are great, food is ok... Bulldogs are the best.... Large frozen margarita is worth it.

After roaming around looking at some bars with decent food, we decided to check out Blockheads. This place is famous for the margaritas. We were seated by our waiter as we walked in. Started munching on those chips with salsa and ordered the guacamole to compliment with the chips. I had the tacos with chicken and pork. My friends gad the frozen margarita and they all seemed to like it decently. My tacos were OK , i think paid like $10 bucks for those. Guacomole was like $4 bucks. Nothing special about this place, if you see a truck sellling tacos around grab those and then have a margarita here!

  • Claire C.

You really can't beat $5 margaritas and cheap mexican food that will fill you up. Blockhead's is definitely not a "fine dining" experience, but if you are craving some cheesy mexican food that is one step up from chipotle and some cheap margaritas - this is the place to go. I usually go for a "naked burrito" which is a burrito without the tortilla. The burritos are huge and so are the grande nachos. The staff is hit or miss -sometimes I have a great waiter but other times I have felt like I fall off my waiter's radar so when he does come over I need to order everything all at once.

Had a wonderful time here for my birthday and tonight was no different . The one thing I noticed is there is only one tv in here, which is located by the bar area. Now the place isn't all that big. It's pretty small actually (I personally think all Blockheads should expand. They do so much business! I know they have the funds for it.. but I digress). I'm sitting at the last table before you head to the outside area, which turns out to be TOO friggin far to see my baby boo Dwight Howard and the Orlando Magic (getting whopped on :() That, my Mexican cuisine loving amigos, es una problema! (not a big enough problem to lose a star though) My waiter this time was even more wonderful than my waiter the last time. The seating was tighter but perhaps that was because the couple seated next to me was larger. I didn't have a burrito for once (I'm on a hard core diet for my trip to Cancun..where maybe I'll find even more delicious Mexican food!). I had a plate of rice and beans. Added guac and jalapenos and salsa. Let me just tell you I cried about cheating on my diet (wasn't supposed to be having rice) but it tasted so damn good I almost didn't mind. I was even a greedlet (greedy-piglet) and took home my left overs.. which was probably about 4 teaspoons of rice. I couldn't have all that yumminess going to waste! This was also my first time getting anything other than an alcoholic beverage at Blockies. Since I'm also off liquor until Easter I had a water with a delicious slice of lemon. It was handed to me with a smile and I drank it while pretending it was a huge glass of Patron. Yummy yummy water. Once again the blockheads didn't disappoint me. I really don't think it ever will. PS: Mark is a doll!!!

Pros: -Great not overly complicated choices of margaritas -Range of reasonably priced drinks with their Bulldog (frozen marg with a Coronita upside down in it) being a common choice. -Everyone seemed to be raving about the food around us (though we didn't try it) Cons: -Cramped: If you don't have a seat, you will have to play musical "standing around" with the staff, who (understandably) get a bit irritated after a while. -Seemed to be a bit of a wait for a table (but this really isn't a bad thing, more of a good sign) I'd definitely come back and recommend you at least give it a whirl!

I went here with a few friends and co-workers last time I was up in NY and this was the kind of place that I wish we had down here in Baltimore! First off... CHEAP! Margaritas for $4?In NYC? Wow! However, I splurged for a bulldog ($8, which is still a pretty good deal I'd say) -- the red one, with sangria -- and it was pretty good. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I liked it. If I went back I would probably just go for the margarita, but it was a fun thing to try. The only negative was that it was crazy packed (and this was a Tuesday night!). We had a kind of big group and we had to crowd around the bar, where it was impossible for everyone to talk to each other. But for 2-5 people, I would say this would be a great place to hang out for a while and have drinks. If I'm ever in that area of the City again, I would definitely stop by here over anywhere else. (Especially considering as we barhopped the rest of the night, in that area we were paying $7 for beer alone!)

Love, love, love Blockheads. So much tasty food for a good price. Only been here two times when I was living in the area, but the chips and guac were great (chips come plastic wrapped) and quesadillas are huge and delicious. It can get pretty packed, but turnover is fairly fast. One thing that bothered me a little is I came with a few friends on a Sunday evening and though it wasn't busy at all (nowhere near compared to other nights), we were forgotten a few times and our food took foreeeever to arrive. They did give us extra chips and guac to compensate though. Also, the decorations are kinda creepy, just saying.

This location is very close to my office, so I've been here for lunch a couple of times. I've had a couple of different kinds of burritos, which were good, but my chicken quesadilla here is always bland. I understand that a chicken quesadilla is just grilled chicken and cheese in a flour tortilla, but I expect the chicken to be seasoned, or have some kind of sauce, because I've always found Mexican food to be flavorful. The chicken quesadilla is really tasteless here. Overall, I think the food is good. The vibe is much better in the evening than at lunch time.

I've been here a number of times with my coworkers and the place never fails us. The staff is super friendly and they try to accomodate all your needs. It's a tight knit kind of place but the food and service makes up for that aspect. I absolutely love their Fish Tacos, you can pair it with salad or rice and beans. The fish, which is tilapia is lightly grilled and placed in a soft shell taco with cheese, pico de gallo, lettuce, and chiptole mayo. The combination of all that texture and flavor is remarkable. They also have great cheap drinks, I was surprise at how tasty their white sangria is, it's sweeter than the red but just as great. Being that this location is just a block away from my workplace is just deadly.

Garbage. Gross. Can't even roll up a fucking burrito!! Better beans in the federal pen. Can I get extra onions on my burrito? The salsa has onions Does sour cream. come with the burrito? The salsa has sour cream

Cheap Margs! Awesome: Chips, Gauc, Nachos!!! A hole in the wall, but margs for $5/$7 holler!! There is no real bar here, nor any real place to stand --its more of like a table stand-up bar. Make a reservation if you can, or expect to wait outside. There is outdoor seating but it looks like someones backyard. Once again $5 drinks that put you on your ass! holler

A blockhead is usually known as dunce, numskull, dolt, loggerhead, dunderhead, and fool I think this is how I would describe myself for coming here. For what its worth its cheap and gets the job done. One gets a water cooler glass of bodega style margarita for $4.00 smacker roos. Sheesh they even have a "gato" walking around. In the bodega no ones messes with the "gato" So 5 of us walk into the place and we just wanted the Guacamole, the waiter tried his best to accommodate us on a Sunday evening. He protested that we need to order some entrees but we just wanted the Guacamole. Ohh and only one of us, is just getting the entree. Stop the presses; Stop the presses this is against the rules. However our super-doper waiter was going to give us a slide on ordering, how gracious of you sir. I forget his name but he has a very. He was very charismatic, and just was letting us know what the deal was. As we devoured the guacamole we joked we had fun it's the best thing I hear there. The guacamole was reminiscent of the big salad at olive garden. I don't think the waiter liked us much, he didn't like his tip actually, the waiter hated us. I like the place though. I will come back Guacamole Eaters only: We will just eat just Guac! Waiter: umm ok. Do you guys want more chips? Guacamole Eaters only: Yum Yum Guac Is good here Waiter: did you guys have a problem with my service this tip sucks? Guacamole Eaters: yes, we did not like you as a waiter, fortunate for us there is a million blockheads with Guac.

TEQUILA! What a hustling-bustlin' place. I went here for the first time with my co-workers and had a blast! It's such a festive place with a young, hip crowd. Perfect for a break after a long day at the office. (Or wherever you work!) Just like everyone said, Blockheads is known for their Margaritas. And boy were they right. They're not only reasonable but they pack a punch! I can't wait to try the flavored ones. (Usually start with the original just to make sure they're good.) Always on the rocks, salted. Yum. My friend has the quesadillas which he said was delicious. I don't know if most people go for the liquor, but the food is definitely worth trying. I will update my post when I have tried the food some more. This place has good music and equipped with a friendly staff! It's a great spot to hit up in midtown. Check it out!

Shame upon this place claiming to serve great San Francisco-style Mexican food! Not sure how you can mess up Mexican food quite this badly, but Blockhead's sure knows how to do that well! My breakdown: + Huge portions + Relatively inexpensive (wouldn't quite say cheap at ~$10-12 for a burrito) + Great service (they refilled our chips without us even asking and the waiter had a pleasant attitude) + The guac as well as the rice & beans were pretty decent + Free soda refills - BLAND, BLAND, BLAND (Although I ordered a chicken fajita burrito, I could discern absolutely no peppers or onions and the chicken was not seasoned in the least) - Drinks served in a plastic cup (really?) - Salsa tasted like it came from one of those grocery store brands - The menu basically consisted of only burritos (where are the enchiladas, quesadillas, etc. at??) Never again! I mean, even those corner fast-food Tex-Mex places can produce a better tasting burrito and that's saying something!

Oh man, this place. Blockheads has got to be the only place that has mediocre food and yet I still wanna go every weekend. It's just so great all around. Chips and salsa for free when you sit, y'all. And it's good! Order some guacamole to start. It's DELICIOUS and actually quite a lot for two or three people. I always get the bean and cheese burrito, which is just OK. Chipotle might technically be better and cheaper so that's unfortunate, but oh well. It's big and burrito-ey and might be nice to share among two people. OK, onto DRINKS, the best thing about this place. Everything is good and everything is cheap! Seriously, if you have two Grande margs at $7 each, you're gonna be smashed. Like, even one regular sized one at $4 and one Grande, and you're good for the night. I also like the specialty drinks like the Bulldog or Flower, which again, are all cheap and delicious. I've always loved the service here and I've probs been here like 7 times. The waiters have always been really nice and attentive and have even gone to lengths to help my table (like splitting checks, serving some people quicker because they have to leave, etc.). ONLY CAVEAT: Yeah, there's always gonna be a long wait. Probs around an hour if you're going on a Thurs/Fri/Sat night so plan ahead!

I had the Patron Bulldog (Beer & Margarita combo), very well made & delicious! Also enjoyed the bean & cheese burrito, flavorful & a good portion size. Overall I think this place has average food compared to other Mexican restauraunts but their price also matches that.

I'm a fan of blockheads ; come on its cheap Americanized foods. I'm particularly fond of this location because they have a sit down bar, which is a rarity with blockheads. I love the two dollar margaritas on Mondays. No the food is not the greatest, but it will do. For anyone who is economizing this is the place.

As another yelper said "don't come here for the food" would be exactly my thought on the Blockheads menu. I ordered a burrito here and when It came out I was overwhelmed with the size and the fact that it wasn't like a typical burrito that you could hold in your hand and take bite out of it-- was a turn off. The burrito was just a tortilla with whatever you choose inside and then it's folded over and in order to eat it you have to deconstruct it. The chips and salsa weren't too bad I did enjoy that. I have yet to get a drink from here, but I've heard that they're good and that's usually the only reason people come to blockheads (the truth hurts).

First off, super crowded! Long wait. Very very loud. Feels like a bar in the village. I dont mind the noise though. Had a passion fruit margarita. = Amazing Jerk Chicken Burrito, not so much... It wasnt bad but I expected better...Could use some more jerk seasoning. Good service. Waiter looked mexican, nice touch of authenticity lol. Definitely going back for drinks! Probably at another blockheads

A value leader at lunch, where you can choose from a burrito, two tacos plus rice and beans, or a quesadilla for $7. Margaritas are also discounted. My coconut flavored one certainly hit the spot, The food is Cal-Mex, not real Mexican, but the portion size on these specials is quite good. Chips and salsa were small - we were a group of three on this visit, and we received the same size as the solo diner at the next table. The chips had a nice flavor and were fresh. Nachos grande at $11.95 were the usual kitchen sink, plenty for three as an appetizer, but not as large as some of the chains. My burrito was stuffed with pork adobo, rice, beans, etc. I didn't tast my colleagues tacos but he was pleased. the quesadilla had some nice browning from the grill and was also stuffed with extra ingredients - a lot of food, Our waiter was friendly and professional and was doing double duty behind the bar. A few service lapses: My burrito arrived in a plain flour tortilla although I had ordered whole wheat. The bus boy tried to remove the nachos when our main courses came. even though we were not finished. He then promised us some more chips to make amends but failed to deliver them. We didn't need them in the end as the portions overwhelmed us. Recommended for an inexpensive lunch.

I went here on a date...let's just say the food was the best part. A very fun, bit loud, atmosphere, but enjoyable. At least it was toasty. Service was good, nothing special. I had the sauteed spinach burrito and it was gooood, and also very large! Prices were not outrageous. Chips & salsa come free, guac extra - guac was only ok, nothing too special. If you want good guac go to El Camion in the east village. Got takeout chips/guac yesterday from them just because it is THAT good. Anyway, fun place to go with friends for sure. I did not have any drinks, so can't comment on that!

Tight tight seating at this delicious Mexican restaurant. I ordered the Super Chicken Burrito and it was awesome. The Margaritas were not the best, too tart for me. Compared to the typical NYC dinner Blockheads was inexpensive. I would definitely go again!

Possibly one of the WORST customer service experiences I have ever had. My two friends and I wanted to come here because their margaritas are fantastic, and we were craving Mexican for dinner. One large margarita is good enough to make me tipsy, and I have a high tolerance. We came on a Friday night around 8pm and were told by the hostess that the wait would be an hour and a half. We put our names down and gave a phone number. The place was tiny and packed, so there was barely room for us to stand at the already packed bar, and there was no standing room or waiting seating area. We were starving, so we decided to go to Qdoba a few blocks away to eat a little something in the meantime and figured that we would go back to Blockheads to have margaritas in time when our name was called. Later around 9:30pm, the hostess called us and said they'd hold our reservation for a few minutes. We speed walked to Blockheads, and it could not have been more than 5 minutes that passed before we got there. We let the hostess know that we have arrived for our table, but she informed us that they only hold the table for 3 minutes and that she had already given our table away to the next party. WTF?! She informed us that we can stand at the bar, and we would be the next on the list. We dispute their policy a bit, but she rudely snaps back at us and says that we should have been around for when our name was called. Where are we supposed to go and wait for an hour and a half when there is no space inside the restaurant and it is freezing outside (it was still winter when this happened)?! By that time, the bar cleared out a bit, so we all ordered margaritas to hold us down until our table was called since we assumed it'd be a long wait, but we were clearly not happy. Our name is called 10 minutes later, and we were seated. The waiter came by and asked us what we'd like to order. We stated that we were planning on grabbing drinks, but since we had to wait for so long, we ordered drinks at the bar, but if he gave us some time to finish our current margaritas, we would likely order more. He rudely responds by saying that the tables are only reserved for people who want to order food. We calmly reply by explaining that we had planned on eating here and ordering food, but because the hostess refused to hold a table for us, we were forced to order drinks at the bar. He was obviously not pleased with our reasoning, so we told him we'd get an order of guacamole and chips FOR NOW to shut him up a bit. He rolled his eyes and proceeded to get it for us. By the time we finished our drinks, we were so fed up with the service we had received that we just asked for our check. The other employees that cleared our table and gave us our check were extremely nice and were not drinking the haterade that our waiter and hostess were on. We paid it and decided to leave a note on the receipt complimenting the two nice people who helped us. This isn't even the first time that I've experienced horrible service from this location. On another occasion, I came here with my coworkers for a team outing. We had a large group, and they refused to let us move some tables together since we had so many people. We stated that we would move it back to its original set up, but they were so rigid and said that they have to stay that way. The only reason I'm not giving the review 1 star is because the food is decent, and I love their margaritas, but Blockheads employees at Midtown East seriously need to learn some manners and how to speak to customers. My poor experiences have definitely left a sour taste in my mouth. Check yourself before you wreck yourself.

Yeah, the margarita queen is back at it again, as if I didn't learn my lesson in college. An old co-worker was strolling into town for one night only so we decided to hit up Blockheads for some eats and treats. I arrived at around 8:30 and was surprised by the size of this place. It's tiny! Don't come here with a party larger than 4. Also, make sure that your whole party is there or else they will give you that typical NYC spiel about how they can't seat you until all of your a$$es are present. Whatevs. So we waited waited waited for more of our friends to arrive and got a table for 5. This place is kind of dark and loud and our server was way too soft-spoken. Guess he missed his tequila shot at the beginning of his shift? Also, he didn't bring us any water for our table? Okay. I guess he wanted us to get sloshed ASAP. The menu: Standard Americanized to the max Mexicano food. I ended up splitting a cheese quesadilla with my pal, Adam (he also ordered a plate of rice and beans). The quesadilla was uninspired. Kind of like the ones I make at home. My other friend Makyra also ordered quesadillas, but with pollo. Clerbie got the Nacho Supreme dish....Which was okay. Again, all of this food just seemed a little bit on the bland side. Where's the sazon?! The drinks: Cheap cheap cheap. Thank God they didn't have one of these places where I went to college, it would have been a problem. Frozen margartias start at $4. Add $1 for a flavor. And of course, bull dogs bull dogs bull dogs. They do not skimp on the alcohol here. Russell always judges an establishment by the quality of their bathrooms...So if he was grading Blockheads it would probably get an automatic fail. To get to the bathroom, you have to walk into the kitchen. Also, it's one of those single toilet gigs. Extremely cramped. Who ever heard of a margarita/taco place with only one toilet? That's a recipe for disaster. Throughout the night, we got kind of rowdy...which can be expected when guzzling tequila without any water...So we kind of got some looks from our server. Also, our party increasingly got larger but the new additions weren't greeted with menus or even a 'hello'. The real kicker: After paying our bill, we were kind of lingering and decided to order some more drinks at the bar. We were then told that we could only order from our server? Oh...our server that hasn't stopped by our table for 15+ minutes? Okay... Next time, I think I will go to one of their larger locations...Or maybe I just won't go at all. Also, remember that this place is on 2nd Ave. so make sure that you wear your bro repellent. And be prepared to have to stagger a few blocks to the subway.

I went this place with a party of 12. It was a last min thing that we all decided on. So we walk in, worried that we won't get a table but the staff was nice enough to set us a table on their tiny backyard. The backyard has a slanted roof and because towering over it is a building I was nervous abt somthing droping on us..or bird poop..anyways we were lucky and no mishaps I got the quesadillas. It was not good. I seriously beleive the college cafe makes better quesadillas than this place does. My Mexican and non friends agreed. and because its in the city its a bit on the pricey side.

Blockheads gets the job done. It's good for cheap drinks, loud crowds although if you have a big group, you will have to wait during prime time for a table. The good thing is that although they don't take reservations, you can leave your phone number after putting your name down and they will call you when your table is ready. The food isn't anything to write home about. It's decent but not authentic or anything. Portions are pretty big! I hate when people keep entering and exiting the restaurant, especially if you are sitting by the door because it gets freezing (esp during the winter) and half of the parties seated near the door had people in their full winter gear. Oh yeah, one bathroom = disaster

This place is a staple for me and my friends. I'll be honest the food is not the best but the prices are good. It's always very loud. It's the cool place everyone goes, it's small and always packed. The service is very good though. The waitresses are very nice and always on point with the orders. I used to go all the time. I recommend it if you like a party place feel but if you don't like noise or tight spaces, I would choose someplace else.

I love blockheads and I love around the corner! This blockheads is almost always busy. They do have an "extra" space in the back which is more like a makeshift setup and rather different than the front. I prefer the front. Also be careful when using the bathroom as it is between the kitchen and food prep as well as on a bit of a ledge. If your claustrophobic it is NOT for you. The "Black Flower" is my favorite drink and the burritos are HUGE. I love all the vegan and vegetarian options. They do not take reservations and must have your whole party there. Put your name in and go have a drink across the street or next door.

I came here for lunch and it did not dissapoint, while it was odd to have clubbing music blasting in the background while my boss is sitting next to me (my automatic reflex is to bop my head to the base), I did enjoy the whole scene. The food is fresh and delicious, however, a little expensive. Overall, a great experience.

YUMMY! I have always been a Blockheads fan, but this is my first time eating in the restaurant (I always got it for delivery). I met up with my friend here on a Monday after work and we ate over by the bar. Unfortunately, they were out of the jerk sauce so he wasn't able to get the jerk chicken burrito he was craving, but he was still able to get the curry tortilla with his regular chicken burrito. I got the super BBQ roast pork adobo burrito and I was not disappointed. I loved that it came with the curry tortilla and as soon as it arrived at the table, the wonderful aroma of bbq sauce and curry wafted through the air (trust me, it smelled good!) It is a fork and knife type of burrito but I didn't mind. It was super tasty and I almost finished it all before I got to the point of bursting. Overall it was yummy meal, service was friendly and quick, only issue is that it is a bit pricey for what it is. I will be back anyway!

I ordered the Jerk chicken burrito... And it's safe to say they need to go back to the drawing board with this one! Don't get me wrong the food is good, however as a Jamaican I expected a little more Jamaican seasoning and flavor in this dish! I'll be back but Ill order something else

Like all Blockheads', except I think the Benny's Burritos in meatpacking- where you can just order a drink at the bar- there's a wait. This location has a bar, but there's a very limited number of seats and there's no room to really hang out, so you pretty much have to wait for a table The wait here isn't as bad as others', but still can be annoying- since you only really come here for the $4 frozen margaritas, not much else. I've had the tacos before and they were just ok -good serving size; about what you pay for.

This is very good for what it is. A raspberry margarita costs $5 and is freaking delicious, and i normally hate margaritas/tequila. I could have drunk that all day. and it is strong!!!! The chicken tacos are pretty good. But you come here for the cheap, strong, delicious frozen drinks, not the food really. The food's just a delicious cheesy spicy complement to the tequila. Our waitress was super nice, we spilled sangria (totally our fault) and she immediately came back with club soda and napkins so we could blot it off our clothes!! I am definitely coming back!

Came in here for a Girls Night Out at 7pm on a Monday night. Place is small and they don't take reservations, so good luck if you're planning on coming with a party that's more than 4. Somehow the leader of my group managed to convince them to hold a table for 6 on the condition that we all be on time. Well, we were and they held to their end of the bargain. Pretty solid list of frozen and shaken margaritas ranging from $4 to 11 (most expensive was the grande margarita with Patron, least expensive was a standard frozen margarita). Not exactly classy, the margaritas were served in clear solo cups, but hey.... who cares as long as it tasted good? I went with the aptly named Mexican Bulldog. A frozen margarita with a shot of tequila and a Coronita wedged in upside down. Got to admit that I felt it, so I was pretty OK with the $7.50 I dropped on it. Everyone else had a frozen margarita either flavored or plain and one person got the frozen pink lemonade with vodka which they also felt was pretty strong. Enough with the drinks... onto the food. Complimentary chips & salsa. Meh. Definitely store bought chips. Definitely jarred salsa. I've had much better. I decided to order the Fish Taco special and I'm glad I did. They give you the option of rice & beans or a side salad, which I appreciated. I went with the salad. That tacos were actually quite tasty. I wasn't a fan of the of the flour tortilla the fish was wrapped in, but other than that I did enjoy my entree. Everyone else ordered burritos or tacos and they all seemed to enjoy what they have. The portions were big enough that more than half of my party had plenty of leftovers for lunch. Service was fine, but the place had the music blaring so it was very difficult for us to have a conversation, let alone place our orders, without screaming. Will I be back? Probably, but only if I'm stuck in Murray Hill and fresh out of dining options. It's not to say I didn't enjoy what I had - I especially liked my Mexican Bulldog, but I am a bigger fan of authentic Mexican and this wasn't exactly that.

Free chips and salsa +1 Auto-refill of chips without having to request more +1 Fun, loud, colorful decor & good music +1 Huge selection of alcoholic drinks and different types of burritos +1 Decently fast service and healthy substitution alternatives (brown rice, tofu) +1 Having to eat my burrito with a knife and fork.... -1 Overall, the burrito was pretty good for 9$ but I wouldn't say it was much better than Chipotle. The 4 stars is more accurately for the fun environment as well as the food. I got the Jamaican jerk chicken burrito and it came with some nice plantain sauce and a curry wrap. The burrito wrap had more of a consistency of a sandwich wrap rather than the usual flexible burrito pita, thus resulting in the inability to eat the burrito with my hands. All sauces come on the side.

This place is what it is. For a place that serves boozy slushy margaritas I bet they're great, but a place for dinner, not so much. The salsa that they bring tastes super jarred-like bad supermarket salsa. We got the fajita burrito and the pork quesadilla and guacamole. -I would get guacamole with everything. That is the best thing they have. -the quesadilla was good, but it was nothing more than pork and a tortilla. -the fajita burrito was not so good. It was basically boiled spiced meet rolled in a soggy tortilla.

I came here twice in the past month. Once for brunch (decent experience) and then for drinks and dinner last night. Service was AWFUL. First they said they couldn't seat the three of us until our fourth got here. I'm sorry, did I just accidentally walk into a hip upscale restaurant and not realize it? Come on, they were busy but had a couple tables. We got seated after one of us said they were leaving after the other girl came. Then we sat down and ordered drinks and guac. 5 minutes later the hostess tells us that if we don't order dinner now that we can't hold the table... We told them that we were waiting for our friend that was on her way... Me: "Wait, so we have to order right now?" Hostess: "No, whenever you're ready." Me: "But we aren't ready, our friend is on her way and she will be here in like 5 minutes. We can't wait till she gets here to order?" Hostess: "No." ....What. As if we couldn't spend the same 5 minutes looking over the menu. Reluctantly we order. And we chat, eat for about 45 minutes- hour. And the hostess comes over again and asks us if we want to order anything else. We order another round of drinks and THEN they have the audacity to tell us, "Okay, well then you guys have to be done." Well we would have been 30 minutes ago if they would have checked on us for a box, another round of drinks, etc. Blockheads, you people are delusional. You are not the hottest David Chang joint in the city. Get over yourselves. Ps, food is on par with Chipotle. Nothing close to anything that justifies the crap service.

Margaritas - check! Cute waitresses - check! Veggie options, and decent food - check! Cute patrons - check! Cops coming in to remove a beligerant drunk at the bar - check! Yes Blockheads has all the goodness of East Midtown, and though it's not my favorite neighborhood, I do like to get out of dodge from time to time. I recommend the veggie chili burrito, a grande margarita on the rocks, and I also recommend chatting with the cute chicks at the table next to yours. You won't be dissappointed!

I've been to a couple blockheads, and this one has the best service by far. We happened to get seated right away on pretty busy a weekday evening and our waiter was helpful and friendly. Ordered the new fish tacos and a couple rounds of margaritas. Only wish is that they would have outdoor seating like other branches. Definitely will be back for more regardless though.

Perfect for afterwork drinks or a dinner with friends before going out for the night. Their margaritas are delicious, strong, and inexpensive. $4 for a normal or $7 for a large. Their food portions are also large. You really get a lot for your money here. The place is not very large though, so if you are walking in around 7-8, there will be a wait. But I come here after work (5-5:30)all the time and there has always been a table to accomdate 5-6 people open.

I have only ordered in from this place and must go there sometime and try the margaritas. However, when it comes to the food -- it's excellent. Their grilled chicken burrito is the best. The food arrives quickly, hot , the order was accurate and the portion size is huge -- easily enough for two ppl to share or make it your dinner for two nights. You won't be disappointed!

I am so angry at this place. I had never been to a Blockheads, and when my friends chose this place for a birthday party, I was excited to try a new place, especially a place with $4 margaritas. It didn't take long for that excitement to subside into frustration and annoyance. Our waitress was rude and had such a bad attitude. I have never encountered any service like hers. I have also been a waitress and I never ever talked to anyone the way she did. Her tone was so condescending and unnecessary. She felt the need to explain to us "Umm, this is a rest-aur-RAHNT" in a valley girl voice when only two of ordered entrees and one ordered an appetizer. We were a party of 6, but apparently the appetizer doesn't count and "ummm, this is a rest-aur-RAHNT you know, and at least half of the party needs to order food." When two of us wanted to order appetizers instead of entrees since we had already eaten, she explained that we needed to order entrees. When I said I'll just get an entree and share it with the table, she said that we couldn't do share food. Um, excuse me, I will do what I want with my food. If I want to share it with my friends, I will do it. The food was decent but I only ate two bites of mine since I didn't want it to start with. Ditto for my other friend who was pressured to order an ENTREE. I have never in my life not left tip before this experience because I know how difficult it can be to wait, but this girl deserved nothing from us.

The variety of drinks they offer is awesome! My personal favorite is the Blue Long Island Iced Tea washed down with a shot or two of souza. The prices are pretty good as well as the customer service. I prefer this location because of the chill outside area and the easy access from 42nd street. It can get pretty crowded on the weekends during the night so plan accordingly if you are trying to go out in a group. Overall, great experience as far as drinks, I have yet to try anything edible besides the chips!

We went to Blockheads for a casual dinner on a Tuesday night.. We were able to get a table immediately in the back courtyard area which was a little surprising considering that the place was packed with an after work crowd.. I had the mini chicken burrito with a side salad and the ingredients were very fresh and the drink specials were outrageous - $4 beers and margs, por favor!

I was craving Mexican and stopped in, I was pleasantly surprised by their lunch specials and price! The food was tasty and the service was on. The place was crowded but what places during lunch time aren't? Around lunch time, for the money, this place can't be beat.

Sometimes you just don't feel like cooking and in searching for a place that would cater to my wife's omnivore cravings and my vegan desires we ended up at Blockheads on 2nd Ave between 81/82 Sts. I was captivated by the 100% vegan cheese, tofu sour cream and grilled tofu substitutions blatantly advertised on the menu. How dare you tease me, allow me to put my restaurant inquisition aside for a meal? Dare accepted, you're on! We had about a 20 minute wait according to the hostess and that was at 7PM on Thursday night. Man the place was packed...and after wandering around looking for a bar, (hey, for her ... I was still on call), we gave up and decided better to not miss our names being called and going back to the bottom of the list. So, about 20 minutes later we got our table. Now Blockheads isn't your quiet Mexican place with moments of Mariachi Band, it's your typical NYC loud, boisterous, don't come here for intimate conversation kind of place. I know, the kind of place I loved when I was in my 20s. But really, we sat next to each other, (awww, I know), and conversation was easy. Starting out with a Quesadilla I changed it to Whole Wheat and ordered the soy (vegan) cheese with roasted corn salsa and sauteed spinach. It was hugh!! It literally was spilling over the sides of the plate and you can see the tofu sour cream in the little ramekin. The sour cream didn't really taste like sour cream but had more of a hummouy consistency with a slight lemon tinge. It served its purpose nicely though and cooled down some of the heat from the hot sauces I tend to pour over everything every other bite or so. Sometimes. The first thing was how nice and crispy the tortilla was, not soggy at all, and my first sensation, to be repeated later, was how creamy the cheese was. It was followed by the rich flavor combination of the corn and spinach. First dish of the night, a big hit. Next, for some reason in my mind, Mexican turned into Caribbean and we both ordered the Jerk Burrito. She, the real thing, and I the tofu after being assured the jerk flavor would come through very well even though the tofu wasn't marinated in it. Our waitress was right. Even though it wasn't as hugh as the Quesadilla it was still a big burrito. Here you can see the 3 sauces: extra jerk sauce, tofu sour cream, and salsa. I tried to show the tofu and bean and rice and cheese but it was a bit dark and the iPhone did as good a job as it knew how. I should mention that I told our waitress I wanted to make it vegan and she prompted me for the whole wheat tortilla, soy cheese, and brown rice. Great. I chowed down and it was delicious. Creamy and flavorful with a nice crunch also. The tofu, although I think when you eat tofu you can usually tell it's tofu really didn't mind being tofu in this burrito. It was smothered in Jerk sauce and there was more on the side. I got a distinct taste of tamarind and other fruitiness like mango or papaya and with some heat added and some cool from the sour cream and the soy cheese; it was one of the best burritos. Also knowing it was vegan, as it usually is, is just so relaxing. So, when I got home, as I often do when I get to a place with more light, I take a good close look at the food and do a little bit of deconstruction. Here you can see, I think, that the burrito has a much paler, more yellow color than the quesadilla so maybe it wasn't whole wheat. Ok, not the biggest deal in the world, I'm just saying. Anyway, I asked about desert and was told there was a brownie, a chocolate chip cookie and flan. Flan? Hmmmm. "Are any of the deserts vegan?" I asked. With a sort of puzzled look and a shrug I was told timidly, "I think they might not have any oil." Hmmmm. Ok, ditch the desert. I was a bit sad about this but with no hot beverages coffee was off the list and I asked for our check. We did have half our food to take home for a bill of around $58 with one drink which isn't too bad for Manhattan. I'm going to give this place another try as I thought the food was really good (and they definitely have a drink on the menu involving an overturned beer bottle in ... well, you have to see it but I have to not be on call to try it), but I do want to be sure to address the vegan issue before hand. I am reasonably certain I was served vegan food but if it's advertised on the menu I like to know that my wait staff knows what I'm talking about. Check out my other reviews...

I enjoyed Ladies Night Out here with some movers and shakers. We started off with the free chips and salsa. So good. I ordered the Fresh Fruit Red Sangria, which was just right - not too strong. To my disappointment, there was no fruit in it, but I liked it anyway. The 3 bean 3 chili burrito was really delicious. I don't know what their secret is, but I was in love. I split it with a friend since portions are fairly big.

I stopped by here for lunch when I saw a big sign out front that showed a $7 special for various choices such as burritos (at least 7 varieties), tacos, and taco bowls (they call it sticky bowls). I went in and asked if I can take out the lunch for the special price, they said No. That's fine, no harm in asking. You get started with a bowl of nachos and some salsa, great. Next, I ordered a soda (only to find out on my bill it was $2.50) and one of the lunch special burritos - beef picadillo which was $7. The burrito is a generous helping and aside from the ingredient chosen you get cheese, rice and bean. You have to be a big eater to finish it off (I only managed to eat roughly 1/3 of the burrito). Before it arrived, I was thinking of something in between Qdoba and Chipotle. It was actually bigger than Chipotle and requires you to eat with a knife and a fork. I saw a little sign on the table that indicated there was a loyalty card program, basically a rewards card. The server said if you spend $100 you get a $10 gift card, I said okay sign me up. They said they were going to look for the cards in the basement, but after about 10 minutes still no word. Another table had been waiting for the card as well, but then just got up and left. I left too because I had already paid the bill and needed to get going, but before I left the server said they ran out of the cards and had to call the central location. Overall, I didn't particularly have a good experience eating here for lunch. What really threw me off was the pricing of the drinks. During lunch, there's a margarita special for $2, but a regular soda costs $2.50. The non-alcoholic beverage costs more than the alcoholic one, yeah sure?!?

Drinks good and inexpensive, and that is where it ends. Everybody very crammed in smalls space, surprised they can get away with it. We were put in a back room that looked like an enclosed yard and seated on lawn furniture. food choice limited, we ordered the burritos, not impressed. Overall don't think I'll be back very soon; especially to eat dinner.

Disappointing and felt like cheaper food than what I was paying for. Salad dressing on tacos? It's not a good idea.

Pros: cheap margaritas. Nice and rowdy, albeit ultra bro-y midtown happy hour joint for you and a handful of your homies. Cons: cheap-tasting food. We're talking bland quesadillas and guacamole here. Super lame. Recommendation: Come for cheap drinks and if you're in the mood for having one of "those" kinds of nights, pass on the food and if your plan is to avoid the murray hill/midtown crowd at all costs.

Four stars only because they have an outdoor area which is covered so I can sit outside and not have to shout over the music and have a sore throat by the time I leave. Besides that blockheads is blockheads you have been to one you have been to them all. One thing that I like about this blockheads though is that they bring you more chips and salsa when you are done and this does not happen at other places. Hmmm that is back it drinks are good mexican bulldog is my favorite the flavored margaritas are also good. The food is okay definitely not a fan of it though. Just love the drinks if you want Mexican there are so many other places that have legit Mexican food that is also tasty.

I've come twice now, and it's always the same - while the container is modest, the food is filling and cheap, the margheritas and cocktails are cheap (try the new margherita with a Corona in it!) and the service isn't bad. The bathroom is a tiny unisex in the middle of the bathroom. Crowded, felt a bit dirty. The tacos - softshell inside of a hardshell, that might need to be switched up just so that the hardshell doesn't crumble and fall all over the place. Ample beans and a tasty homemade chicken & vegetable soup. A nice smokey salsa to start with free chips, and you can order a side of guacamole, too! The space isn't good for large groups (that's why I put no) but it's okay for up to about six people... and one group of those can fill part of the restaurant quite well.

This place is great for drinks. They have frozen margaritas with a cold corona. Only 4 peso's. Its a nice atmosphire with good music and nice people. I would definitly go back for the drinks. I thought the drinks hit the spot, tacos not so much. Dont get me wrong the food is alright and im not complianing. It just i'm from SoCal and i know real mexican food. The taco's remind me of a hyped up Taco Bell which is not bad being that i like Taco Smell from time to time.

This place is a good go-to place if you have no idea what else to eat in the neighborhood, if you're looking for relatively cheap food, really cheap drinks ($3 margaritas are really strong) and a fun environment. I believe this joint has a patio for the summer goers as well. The burritos and quesadillas are HUGE! The guacamole really isn't that good and its awfully small for $4.50. The word Mexican in the restaurant name is laughably appropriate, I guess in the US sense of what Mexican is. Still you can't go wrong on cheap drinks and huge portions, that is unless you don't have a gym membership...

This is the spot for solid Mexican food. There are several Blockheads locations throughout Manhattan, but I've been to this particular location more than once. Frozen margarita for 4 bucks are awesome, but get the Bulldog (frozen margarita with a mini Corona inside) to ensure you get a good drunk on. Food wise, the chorizo tacos were great (add the green sauce for an extra spicy kick), and the Mexican wrap had a good amount of guacamole in it. Also, free chips!

10 years ago I had a really good first experience with Blockheads and unfortunately I keep trying to recreate that experience from time to time. This was NOT one of those times. There is a reason it's called Blockheads, cos that is who works there. I ordered the vegetable medley burrito with add on's of Guacamole and Tofu. Even though the menu said $1 per add-on I was charged $2.50 for each! That's $5 of add-on's. When I asked why so much she said it was because I wanted to guac inside the burrito and they were giving me a bigger scoop than if it was on the side. It doesn't say this on the menu but honestly I was too tired and hungry to argue. When I got my burrito it was mostly rice and beans with SOME veggies, ONE strip of Tofu and ONE little scoop of Guac! Worth $18?!?!?! I think not! I was so angry I will never go back.

I freaking love this place. Maybe it's because I feel lost whenever I'm in New York so I tend to stick with places I know... or maybe it's because I've enjoyed some really fun meals here with my brother and sister. Eh, who the hell cares why I like it. I just do. First off, the margaritas are fantastic and relatively inexpensive. I'm usually giggling after about 1.5 but that won't stop me from having 3 or 4. The chips and salsa are the perfect salty accompaniment, and they keep them coming. I usually end up with a chicken burrito for my meal. The ingredients are basic but everything is fresh and good-tasting, which is enough to keep me happy. I've never been to the other locations, but this one in particular is a hole in the wall that actually has character and charm. Can't wait for my next visit!

That is some dang, mighty fine Went here for the first time and I WILL BE BACK to partake in the $5 black flower. The small is enough to knock me on my @ss. Four New Yorkers from the south (3 Texans and 1 North Carolina-an) chose this as our location to celebrate a birthday. So, the food we found decent- tough crowd, I know. However, **FREE chips and salsa** is always a bonus in NYC since I eat my salsa with a spoon. And hey, free and decent is very, very good. I had the chicken wrap which I found to be pretty skimpy on the chicken. But, it was under $9.00. My mates got quesadillas and burritos and Mexican salads which we all were thoroughly enjoying after about halfway through our beverages. Birthday gal got the large black flower which was comparable to a Super Big Gulp or a Sonic Route 44! (and a free shot of Tequila- which was about a shot and a half!) I shall return!

We had dinner at Blockheads (where burritos come to life!) It's a small restaurant, with a large and somewhat quirky following, and laid back vibe. True to its location, the customer's were primarily college aged people dining on decent and inexpensive Mexican food, and drinking their "Bulldog" margaritas. The Bulldog margaritas come in a variety of different flavors, topped with an additional shot of tequila and a Corona is turned upside down and stuck right into the drink. They ranged from $7-$12 dollars- I wanted one so bad, but I knew I was a) running 11 miles the next morning, b) doing sake bombs in under an hour, and c) did not want a repeat of the hangover that I experienced the previous Sunday. For these reasons, the Bulldog Margaritta goes on the "next time" list. Will there be a next time? Eh, maybe. I've eaten at Blockheads before but on 60th between 8th and 9th in Worldwide Plaza, which has outdoor seating. For some reason, this time the food left me feeling like I had just eaten an entire Mexican- a large one, no less. I thought I played it safe with a rice bowl- chicken, beans, salsa, cheese, quacamole, sour cream- pretty much everything you'd expect, and could not finish it. This never happens to me, ever. My dining companion had a smiliar experience with their quesidilla grande.

A cheaper and friendlier alternative to Dos Caminos around the corner. Although they don't make the guacamole in front you, you know the drill and know it will be just as satisfying while accompanying your $3 margarita. The combination will set you back about $10, not $30, which is a bit of a relief. The burritos here are not bad either. I usually have the BBQ chicken; its large enough to share or to save some to take home. Whatever your poison, this Mexican diner is a fun place to chill and catch up with your pals on any day,

$4 margaritas in NYC?! Oh yes. That and they'll add any flavoring you want for just $1 more. I HIGHLY recommend coconut - YUM! That said the food is just OK and the place is very small and seemingly always cramped. I might also mention that the music is SO insanely loud that you can barely have a conversation with the person sitting across the table from you which is annoying. Overall a decent place I still count on for happy hours and sometimes casual meetups with friends but probably not the first choice of place you'd want to go.

Short version: One of my favorites in NYC! $3 margaritas can't be beat and they're strong! The havana chicken burrito is larger than chipotle - bit pricier but fresh ingredients are so worth it. Bit longer version: We stopped by here on Friday night trying to get dinner and drinks. But it was packed at 930. Fine. We'll go somewhere else for now. But I'll be back. And yes, I did return the next evening. We hopped in around 6pm on Saturday and were seated immediately. No where in New York is happy about seating half the party and having to wait for the rest. But they let us grab a table for four with only two there at the moment. My fav margarita is the original on rocks, no salt. However, $3 margaritas are frozen only. Well, that's okay. I can deal. MMMmm original $3 frozen margarita that is super strong! I also ordered the Havana chicken burrito with guac, sour creme, and corn salsa added. It was fresh, delicious, and large. Quite a bit larger than the famed Chipotle burritos. It also came out incredibly fast! I'm talking within 6 minutes of ordering. Mexican anywhere is delicious. But Blockheads does one more in every way possible. Quainter locations, inventive music, delicious and fresh food, strong tequila. Go to Blockheads. Its wonderful.

Ordered a variety of dishes in for a little Mexican night at home. The tacos, burrito, and quesadilla were delicious but my favorite part of the meal was the rice and beans. They were both perfectly seasoned and complimented one another excellently. Topping them with Chalula's sauce only enhances the flavor.

I am not a big fan of this location. I love the one in Hell's Kitchen for their outside seating. The food in either location is very, very average (just plain blend) so with no outside seating to make up for it, I know I am not coming back to this location.

Whoever thinks this place is good has obviously never had Mexican food before. The have a lot of options, and I give them kudos for having tofu sour cream and grilled tofu as an option. However, the food should also have flavor. I got the tofu burrito with no sour cream and no cheese. This left me with rice, beans, and tofu. There was no flavor in this burrito. I put salsa on my napkin and preferred that. One thing you think would be awesome, which other reviews have said, is that they give you free chips and salsa!!!! YES!!!!! Well, the chips are basically the cheap Mission corn chips you get at the market, the ones that are cheaper than Tostitos. I would've killed for Tostitos. And I SWEAR the salsa was Pace Picante! There is no way it was anything else! To top it off, the burrito had a menu price of $10.95. Holy shit. I had faith though, and got it anyway. Only to be brought a check that had $11.95 on it! I asked why and she said "the prices were raised". Thanks!! A burrito that is worth $3.50 is now $12! PLUS TIP! The ONE good thing about this place for me was the $3 frozen margarita... which was quite strong and delicious. I would recommend only coming here for drinks. $19 with tip for an incredibly crappy burrito and a delicious margarita for lunch. Not worth it.

So- blockheads is blockheads. It's a pretty consistent NY chain with decent food and drinks at excellent prices. However, as a patron and a past employee of this company, I find it disappointing that management has taken such an apparent turn for the worse. The other night I went into blockheads on second ave and had a seat at the bar. After sitting for 7 minutes without being greeted the bartender came out carrying cases of corona. All the while the manager (who I learned later was named Louis) stood behind the bar watching the Yankee game ignoring the new guest and all of the other peoples' empty glasses at the bar. Then he proceeded to watch the small female bartender while she stocked the bar, and then walked away. I guess most people don't rate restaurants based on the performance of the managers but for me, a lazy manager is a huge turn off. No bueno, blockheads.

If you give this place less than 4 stars you are just a hater! $3 frozen margaritas at all time are delicious and pretty strong too--3 got me deceptively tipsy! The place is fun and reasonable, I got tacos which were good. Wish the menu had a few more inventive elements to it (other than the drinks) but all in all I love this place and will come here all the time!

Great neighborhood spot for when you don't feel like cooking...and this can be often. I wish their menu was more extensive, but I did notice the last time I was there, that they adopted a Chipotle-style section that allows you to build your own bowl of food. I usually get the tacos and with a marg or two, the bill is always less than $20 with tax and tip. I've gotten the grande nachos too and can say the food is pretty solid. The ingredients seem fresh and don't taste at all like "imitation" anything. Blockheads can get pretty loud, but the service is attentive and no frills.

I was in the hospital after I had surgery and my caring family was talking about going to Blockheads for margaritas after they were done visiting me. Being on a liquid diet I was going to flip out since I was STARVING. Anyway they promised they'd take me when I was better. I finally had a chance to go after dreaming about this place for quite some time and I was NOT disappointed. Even if you aren't a big drinker their mexican plates are just delicious. They have great quasadillas, enchiladas and tacos. I love how they have multiple locations over the city. It's great that wherever you are in the city...chances are a blockheads isn't too far away.

The food is very good, we really love the burritos and chips and salsa. There menu for side items is a little sparse, I wish they had something besides just chips and salsa to go with my burrito... We usually order it from seamless web which works well, however they take forever to deliver it. One time, we waited for over an hour, and we've not had that problem with other seamless orders. Overall, pretty good place though, we like it.

This review is only about food and atmosphere, not their drinks..... I came here with a friend last night (Friday). As soon as I stepped in, I was horrified. This place looked so filthy and I felt like I was in a trash hole. The music was soo ghetto, loud, and quite frankly I was offended by it. People there seemed to enjoy it, however, I was mortified. There were no tables available, and waiter sat us in a dirty table in a corner. It looked like a 2 year old ate in the table- food all over. The waiter rushed us to get our orders since the kitchen was closing soon. We advised him that we would order right away (which we did), but he seemed very annoyed. He was more concerned in carrying a conversation with the other waitresses. I'm not Mexican but I bet that I could probably make better Mexican food. The food was terrible. I don't know why everyone enjoys the greasy chips and super old tomato sauce (it's more like liquid and no tomatoes). I really would've prefer to go to Dos Caminos and pay 4X and have a very pleasant experience.

My friend and I wanted to grab tacos and margaritas before she moves away from the city. Dos Caminos and Rosa Mexicano are both delish and nearby but Blockheads has the $3 margaritas so... no brainer. The service was good and I enjoyed sitting by the open restaurant front and getting a nice breeze. I had the two shredded beef taco plate with rice and beans. I love how they have a warm soft shell tortilla INSIDE the crispy taco shell. I hate deciding between the two so this is basically the most brilliant thing ever. Plus $3 margs. Can't go wrong!!

I was on this crazy food crave for about 2 weeks. I needed to eat Guacamole with Margaritas outside ASAP. BUt for some reason I ddin't get a chance to fulfill my craving for 2 whole weeks. I'm fortunate enough to live in between Dos Caminos and Blockheads. I've been to Dos Caminos about 3 times and every time i've loved it. But my wallet wasn't so happy when the bill came along. So since we never tried Blockheads which was literally right across the street from our apt.. we decided to give it a try on a lazy Sunday night. The restaurant was a bit loud so we decided to take the outdoor seating which was absolutely adorable in the back of the building. Menu. Hello $3 margaritas!! Seriously where in Midtown East can you get $3 drinks of any sort? Even beer isn't that cheap. We chose the Strawberry and Mango margaritas which were strong .. just the way we like it :) Shared the 2 taco combo which came with beans and rice and had the guacamole for our appetizer. The portions were huge and we weren't able to finish the guac... which means it was HUGE (enough for about 3-4 people). Overall bill came to about $19-20/person. Our new favorite Mexican "diner" in the city for us.

Perfect dive-y Mexican food! The Margaritas are cheap ($4) and strong! The Tacos Plate of 2 is an incredible deal, such a huge amount of food for only $9.50. They also offer vegan options for cheese and sour cream, which is pretty rare in dive-y type of restaurants. The biggest issue here is the lack of space when the backyard area is closed off. The tables are pretty close together, but the waitstaff make it work! I absolutely love it here, especially after a long day!

I have super mixed feelings about this place. We walked in to find it super crowded. My sister had put our name down (or so we had thought). Turns out we were sort of on a "mental list". This place had a lot of people crowded in the entry way (ps - not too big when they don't have their outside seating to work with in the winter!!!) and for them to *not* have an actual waiting list? Yeah, not acceptable. Sorry. We finally scored a table (after longingly watching others sit and chat over their food without even touching it - what was wrong with those people?). I will say I thought their margaritas were quite strong, and at $3 for regular frozen or $4 for flavored frozen or frozen/sangria swirl, a pretty fine fine deal. {{plus 1}} The tortilla chips came in Chinese take-out containers, which I did not get. Very very odd. Salsa was good though, and seemed to get better the more you ate (flavor seemed to build). {{plus 1}} The enchiladas though were only fair (rice inside an enchilada? what's that about?!?). And they royally messed up the first attempt at completing our order and our server almost questioned us as to whether that was *really* what we ordered. Um my sister who used to be vegetarian and has never eaten a beef enchilada in her life most definitely didn't order your beef enchiladas. {{minus 1}} Will we go back? Probably when weather is warmer. Probably if so, mostly due to the margs and chips -- not service or main course. *Still* on the hunt for fabulous Mexican food in Manhattan. It ain't happening yet, folks... ----- UPDATE: Ok, so I had their guacamole. I've migrated to their quesadillas. MUUUUUUCH improved. Yes, yes - had to give another star. As well as kudos and congrats to them being back up and operational after a brief hiatus following the nearby crane tragedy.

I'm sorry but you cannot beat $3 margaritas 24 hours a day. You just can't! I love this place and all it's locations throughout the city. I live right around the corner from this one so I go there a lot. I will say this though.... don't come here late at night or on the weekend if you aren't in a rowdy mood. The place is small, tables are cramped and people get loud. $3 margaritas don't exactly attract the "conversationalist" types. This place is a dive for sure, and perfect if you know what you're getting into. I personally like the kitschy decor. If I'm not in the mood for the rowdiness, I come here during the day or just get takeout. The food is NOT a ripoff. Order the quesadilla grande with chicken and share it between TWO people. You will be full and it's the perfect addition to your margaritas! I always order it and even have leftovers to bring home. Two people can get tipsy AND full for under $20 at any hour. It doesn't get any better than that in Manhattan!

This is a good place to go drink and have a good time with friends. It is conducive to groups that want to sit at a table and talk in a loud setting while having a good time and drinking. They have very cheap drinks making this the perfect after work destination for letting off steam with the others at the office.

Salt seems to be a theme to dining here. We were served yummy, cheap margaritas with a salt rim. We were served delicious salsa with salty tortilla chips. That was the best part of the meal. Then, I ordered. No chorizo in a "Mexican" restaurant?! Oh, well, I can get authentic in my own neighborhood. To vary my dining, I ordered tacos--one chicken and one shredded beef. I asked for the red sauce on the side, because I was worried that it might be too spicy for my taste. The presentation was good. Shells fully stuffed with meats topped by lots of lettuce and a bit of cheese. The third of a cup of bland rice was to once side, the half cup of unflavored bean soup on the side. Oh, and there was a generous monkey dish of sour cream. My complaint? The only way I could tell the difference between the shredded beef and the chicken was the difference in texture, They both tasted like....salt. I tried my red sauce to add flavor. It tasted like salty tomato paste. Taco bell does it better for 99 cents a taco instead of 8.95 for a two-pack. Next time, I will stick to the margaritas and chips for my salt intake and eat my Mexican food (actually, I guess it is Dominican) in my own 'hood. For less than half the price.

Blockheads/Benny's Burrito is the closest thing I've found to replace the hole left by Toronto's Sneaky Dees in my new New York life's stomach. (Hahaha what???) They specialize in cheap Mexican food and cheap drinks, but the problem is, sometimes I get way more drunk than I planned. I mean, like you've been roofied. They offer $5 frozen margaritas which are VERY strong and VERY sugary and never cease to make me feel like shit after an hour or so. After making this mistake twice now, I think I've learned my lesson and will stick to beer next time I'm there.

  • Daf M.

Went there twice. First time i had the super chicken burrito. It was great, rich and moist inside. The second time I had the super beef burrito. It wasn't as good. The sour cream and guacamole inside the burrito were almost non existing. I had to ask for addition sour cream. This one was too dry. The chicken burrito was really good though.

The food was good. The service was quick and the lunch special is a great deal. Anything over $6 from 11am to 3pm you get unlimited chips/salsa and soda or iced tea. I give it 5 stars because they really make it easy on the veg/vegans. Theres a tofu/soy cheese/soy sour cream option for almost everything they make. Even in a city like NY its still sometimes hard to find variety in the foods we eat. Theres outdoor seating out back and its cozy...they also have good drink specials if you're into that kinda thing. A lot of people mentioned how the service was slow and sucked but I thought they were great. They were very attentive and if anyone (not just your waiter) saw your drink getting low or your chip bowl empty they refilled it and they were so pleasant. i dont know what it's like there at dinner time but I know i'll definitely be back for lunchy.

I'll just get down to it - the food . . . it's not good. If you're craving great Mexican, go somewhere else. However, if you're looking to get drunk cheaply and quickly, look no further. I'm not really a fan of margaritas, but they're a crowd pleaser, and one fateful evening I was taken here, very innocently, on a Sunday, and left absolutely plastered. $3 will get you a very generously sized, very generously spiked margarita. After three, I was a goner. That's hard to do for $9. I woke up the next morning realizing I had purchased a copy of "The Jerk" at a nearby Blockbuster, so I guess I had a good time.

    (2)
  • Jennifer Y.

As a midtown watering hole I have to say, this place needs better price points! Compared to the other happy hour bargins in the area, the solo cup sized grande shaken margarita coming in at $9 each does NOT leave me wanting more. Unlike Zarela's this one is pretty gross and left me with sort of a sore throat. It's too sweet & too sour all at the same time. Kind of like in college when you didn't know what you were doing and added "pucker" to your cocktails. Free chips & salsa are decent. Food is pretty average. The one perk I did see was a little back patio area which is nice for the summer. Otherwise, I don't know what the draw would be. Not cheap and not good. Not a winning combo.

Why do people go to Blockheads? CHEAP and STRONG margaritas the food is pretty damn tasty served up in huge portions and quite cheap as well. the lesbian crowd Yeah, I said it. Look around, the staff is pretty much entirely comprised of Butch Latina lesbians and I would say about 80% of the clientele was also lesbian/gay. I am downright surprised there is no mention of this in any of the reviews. Not that it matters, but, just to give people a heads up, if you are a straight male or a straight female looking to hit on some folks at the bar, you will be out of luck. This ain't no pick up joint. Bring a date. We were waiting for about an hour and a half for a table as we kept getting passed over for groups coming in AFTER us. The hostess was giving us some BS about not really knowing the numbers in our party, etc. Whatever...luckily, we parked our asses at the bar but we were starving by the time we actually did get seated. I ordered up the Mega strawberry margarita and at $10 ,this was keeping me happy as was the chips and salsa...but dayum I was HONNGRAY. We FINALLY got seated and they threw us a bone with the only straight male waiter in the house who was actually kind of cute. He was actually entertaining and fun, that is until he decided to put his hands on me! No no no..you can look, Homes but no touching! Other than that, it was cool and I really enjoyed my low-carb burrito plate. It was just the perfect size for me and I even took the rest home as leftovers. I will come back though, despite Mr. Octopus and the long wait we experienced.

Very mediocre, but delivers in a few areas -- first off the rice bowls are an insane amount of food for a pretty reasonable price and generally very good too. I tend to head here only for drinks however, the $3 frozen ($4 with flavor) margaritas are a lot of fun and actually surprisingly potent (just watch out for the brain freeze). The negatives? Service is pretty attrocious, not exactly the biggest space (it can feel like the people sitting at a neighboring table are basically sitting in your lap) and the outdoor courtyard in the back is pretty weak. Place also gets packed due to the margaritas -- be warned.

Went last night, 2 adults + 3 kids. Very loud and crowded, but despite the crowd, we had great service and attention from our waiter and the manager. My daughter loved her grilled chicken tacos - flour tortilla inside a corn taco shell. Great black beans and Spanish rice as accompaniments. I had the BBQ Adobo Pork burrito - good, though could have had a stronger seasoning and more meat vs. rice & beans. Excellent salsa. Though the kitchen was obviously pretty backed up, the efficient and friendly service was a plus for us. For the price, this is a good value, always reliable tex mex comfort food.

Do come here for those cheap margaritas, ($3 for regular, $4 for flavor), and free tortilla chips with salsa, and don't come here for anything else. The place here is small, very small, and the tables were sticky. I ordered a Havana chicken burrito. Very blah. I just didn't want to eat it. In fact, a third through, and I just started making a mess of my plate, trying to pick through the chicken. Unfortunately, I ate all my chicken pieces into the third of the burrito. I counted the chicken pieces I had, and I got a total of 5 small pieces! What a rip off! Where is my chicken?! Rice and beans for $12! What a load of crap!! And throughout the night, I had major gas, but good thing I was walking around Manhattan for hours. The drinks were good and quite strong. I got crazy after a few sips. I was loud for the entire night, and came home with a sore throat. I had fun with the drinks, but not the food.

I liked the scene in here (even though i was under the influence of a lot of vodka); from what I can remember it was very mexican-festive with many lights and tropical colors... you know all that good stuff. I am not a fan of Mexican food AT ALL, but I managed to scarf down half of a vegetarian burrito, which I enjoyed to the max right before it all came back up. I didn't get to experience any of the famous drinks, but I'm sure I'd give this place another chance on a more sober note. Blockheads is pretty tiny, and by tiny i don't mean cozy. It's packed, call ahead. I'd say it's a good idea to make a reservation because we waited for what seemed like two hours outside the place while I was nearly asleep on some random girl's shoulder. The bathroom was even smaller than tiny, but that bowl did justice during my best friends 21st birthday.

Anybody who has ever eaten real Mexican food -- e.g. you grew up in the Southwest, CA, MX, etc, stay away from this bland, crappy, NY, gringo slop. This food tastes like the burrito that they might serve in a deli, or a diner.

My roommate orders from Blockheads all the time and it always smells amazing! Who doesn't love a burrito filled with goodness? I decided to go for lunch with my bf, and there was a cockroach creeping up the wall to my left. I'm not an unreasonable person. I understand there are coaches all over this city, but EW. No thanks. Needless to say, I didn't finish my meal.

I am reviewing just on the margaritas and the price point. I thought they were delicious and they had plenty of flavors. For $4 and to be made with Sauza all day everyday I think I could become a regular here...esp considering I am have seen people get margaritas on teh rocks with non name brand tequila and pay $8. Have not tried the food but liked the free chips and salsa. Also, ther is some pink lemonade drink that I want to try

Drinks - Cheap and Ok! Ambience - None - Very loud crap music. Tables everywhere and very crowded. We went here on a Friday night and by 11 pm this place was full. You cannot enjoy a conversation in this place. Food - We were so tired of the noise and crowd that we just ordered nachos which were mediocre. They do serve complimentary cold chips with a cold tasteless tomato dip...yechh! I would never go back!!! We just had to leave and went over to the more tolerable Irish bar across the street.

I came here because of their vegan friendly menu. I can't tell you how happy I was to have a vegan quessadilla. Holy cow! The fresh house made salsa was fantastic. Our server was sullen and seemed really put off by my order (I wasn't asking for anything not on the menu - just soy cheese and soy sour cream). But this isn't fine dining so I wasn't really expecting a lot. As a vegan - it gets my highest rating.

A few of my cousins and I decided to meet at this particular blockhead's location for tacos & margaritas after work last Friday. My cousins arrived ahead of me and were told that they couldn't be seated until everyone in our party arrived. While they were patiently awaiting my arrival a gentleman walked in, was greeted by the restaurant staff, mentioned that he was looking for another party that was waiting for him and sure enough, he was led over to a group of people who were already seated and were waiting for him. Never again will we visit this Blockhead's location thanks to their racist staff practices.

I always enjoy the food here. The burritos are tasty and healthy. I like that they offer healthy options like brown rice and a whole wheat tortilla. They also have a good, fun atmosphere. The place is usually lively even on a weeknight.

So it's Friday, and I'm starving! My friend tells me we're going to this place. At the mention of "margaritas", my response is "let's go!". Very mixed feelings about this place. We waited for about 15 minutes for a table, not bad. We take a look at the place and note how small and packed it is, not great. The service from our waitress not good at all! We waited more than 15 minutes for our drinks. They finally come, but then our waitress leaves again without taking our food order. WTF?! She comes back another 15 minutes later to take our food order. By this time, we're all starving. Now for the positive, our meals come really quickly 10 minutes after we order. I ordered the chicken fajita burrito, and this thing was massive and delicious! Plus it was only $12 (the most expensive thing on the menu, kick ass!). The margaritas were good. Not great but good enough and pretty strong. In short, go for the food, but don't expect much else.

Blockheads is great! Giant $3 magic (ruffie) margaritas all of the time! Oh yeah, and the salsa is really really tasty. The burritos are great. It's a bit small though and usually packed. Sometimes the service can be a little eh, but the food and drinks always make up for it. With drinks this good/cheap, it would be great if they had a full bar area, or cleared tables in the evening. Come on guys, buy whatever's next door and expand this location!

I'm the mayor on 4squared...I.e. I come often. Fine a few months ago the menu items went up about a buck fifty on average. Then a few weeks ago the mags went up a dollar. I don't live in a bubble I understand what is going on in the world around me ....but now last night they charged .75 for the salsa verde. The first time in 33 check ins. Ridiculous. What is next? Charging for chips and salsa. Not to mention the nachos have at least 25% less cheese sand 25% more chips. Upsetting. Nickel and dime-ing is so lame and sad = minus two stars until conditions improve!

Brunch. Positives: Chips and salsa Both entrees were solid and workmanlike, even if they didn't reinvent the wheel. The huevos rancheros were a little overcooked, but the rest of it was pretty good. The chef guy on the sugar packets looked like Ron Jeremy. The guy next to us begged the server, then the manager to sell him booze even though he didn't have ID. The manager was completely respectful but didn't back down. Negatives: Coffee was cold. I slammed it back hoping for a hot refill but no dice which brings me to... Server was lousy and inattentive. As I say, cold coffee, no refill, only brought out one mimosa, which was ok, because the one she brought wasn't any good either. Also my girlfriend and I wanted to split the bill down the middle and, you know, said as much. The server took all my cash and charged the remainder to my gf's card. I'd go back but not if I had to sit in her section.

I've only been here for lunch so I can't comment on the margaritas that I've heard good things about but the food is very underwhelming. The only time I really enjoyed as an entree was when I got their sweet potato quesadilla which was a special that day. The only thing saving this place is their chips and salsa. They're salsa is quite addicting.

i used to live around this location but hadn't been in a while until a few days ago when some friends and I were trying to take advantage of the 12.99 deal at Friday's they've been advertising on TV. Unfortunately the midtown location is not participating in the offer... probably since entrees there cost at least $20. So instead I suggested we walk to Blockheads on 2nd ave. I forgot how much I liked this place. Can't say I agree with some of the negative reviews. The food is good, well proportioned and cheap. Can't beat the $3 margaritas either. I like the feel of this particular location and I've never had an issue with the service. My friend asked for salt on her frozen margarita, and when it came out without, our server just brought out another on the house.

I went to this place on a Friday night for dinner. I'd heard good things about it, specifically that it was super cheap. We were seated right away, although our table was a bit cramped. Chips and salsa were brought over right away - the salsa was very flavorful and delicious. We had to wait longer than desired for our drinks to arrive. I ordered a strawberry margarita, which for $3, was awesome. I ordered a cheese quesadilla and it was great, although it should come with a side of salsa...I wound up using the one from the chips. My friends enjoyed their meals (cheese quesadillas, chili and burritos) as well. I would definitely come back here for a cheap, quick, good meal if I was in the neighborhood. One downside: bathroom is disgusting and incredibly small.

Tiny place. Come here for the drinks and atmosphere. The burritos are OK but you can probably do better at Chipoltes. Prices are reasonable for the neighborhood.

TEX MEX! ......$3 for really stong margaritas=5 stars in my book. Order the rice bowl with beans and shredded beef, Amazing. My friend and I got a round of margaritas for free just for moving tables to accomodate a bigger party. Overall great food, great drinks and great service.

As everyone says, you can't beat $3 margaritas ($1 more for a flavor). Our waiter made them, and he must have put some extra tequila in ours because we were feeling a little tipsy after just one! We stopped by for lunch this weekend and had a nice seat on the back patio. The menu is very vegan- and vegetarian-friendly. You can get tofu sour cream instead of dairy, and there are options for tofu or veggies for just about everything. They also have vegan cheese - I didn't try it, but it's very accommodating of them! The guacamole (according to our waiter) is also vegan-friendly. I had a very yummy tofu & roasted vegetable rice bowl with the solfrito sauce, corn salsa, and guacamole. That, plus the complementary chips & salsa, were very, very filling. Another friend got a quesadilla and it was stuffed to the brim! A very satisfying meal!

This is the third Mexican rest. I have reviewed this week. Clearly I have a fetish....just not one for Blockheads. I have been to this place twice. It's convenient and it has cheap margaritas, 3 dollars for frozen margaritas. (although I'm more into the negro modelo) The service was ok, and the price wasn't ridiculous. The second time I was there, we stopped in for nachos and drinks. The chips were soggy, the pieces of chicken were bigger than my fingers, and the bill was delivered before we could even order a second round. With a restaurant every 20 feet, there is no reason to eat mediocre food regardless of the price.

I brought my customers visiting from Atlanta into NYC for dinner. Walking by Blockheads it looked crowded so we decided to see what all the fuss was about. We were seated immediately and had margaritas in front of us within minutes. Considering we were in midtown, $5 for a margarita is extremely reasonable. I had a shredded beef burrito that was delicious. It was very filling and had good taste and texture. My client had the tacos and he raved about how good they were. The service was excellent; unfortunately I forget the servers name right now. We also had the pleasure of talking to the Manager, Joe. He was very nice and very hospitable to my group. I have saved the location in my blackberry and I plan on going again next time I am in the area.

With $3 Margaritas, this place is hard to pass up. I's nothing fancy - not great service or great presentation. But you go there for OK Mexican food and fun. Actually, you go there for the margaritas, but you get the idea.

Stretch your dollar with giant food and drinks from this little oasis among construction sites. This is the place for you if you want to feel like you're in Mexico - tacky stuff hanging from every corner, signs on ever wall with no apparent theme, tables haphazardly smashed into the narrow cave, and loud music (thankfully American style music and no worries about drinking the water). So, obviously this place isn't about glamor; it's actually the complete opposite and that's why it's a great spot. The food is good, but not stellar. The drinks are huge, but not the best I've had (a little too sweet). The service is always friendly, but you need to be explicit in everything you need (...like a glass of water). I like this place when I'm in the mood for a liquid lunch. It's a great break from the midtown standard boringness because it's so bizarre in there!

  • Valeriya E.

I have never been to this diner, but order from them almost weekly. The food is delicious and the portions are generous, without swerving into gargantuan territory. Sautéed Spinach Burrito is my absolute favorite. Their quesadillas are excellent, though tacos tend to be a little dry. Best part? You can substitute tofu for any protein in any item! As well as request brown rice, tofu "sour cream", and whole wheat tortilla at no extra charge. So the veggie and vegan options are plentiful. And they usually deliver quickly. Two small cons: wish they used less salt and less packaging. Do I need a large paper bag, inside a larger plastic bag to carry my covered plate?

    (4)

I ordered the chix fajita burrito and it was pretty good. Very large portion and it was delivered within 8 minutes of ordering piping hot! I would definitely return for more. The tortilla and salsa was good also.

Quality Mexican food, pretty affordable ($11 very thick burritos), good atmosphere for a younger happy hour scene. I've been to both the UES and Midtown East locations, and found the same atmosphere at both.

  • John Q.

The portions are huge, and margaritas are fantastic! I highly recommend the ones w/ a Corona in them! This place is a diamond in the rough. I will return many times. I had the build your own nachos, and they were perfect!

  • Ted M.

portions are huge, and the food is edible. it's passable as far as midtown mexican is concerned, particularly at this price point. i usually go for the burritos, but the quesadillas are good too. chips and salsa are above average, and barely need to be salted. i should probably come clean and say that i ALWAYS salt the chips at a mexican restaurant - sometimes to the point that you're fishing through salt grains to get to the chips. however, if you're at blockhead's, you're probably not there for the food. the frozen margaritas are cheap ($3) and potent. add a flavor for only a buck, or upgrade in size for a little more. i find it best to just stick to the $3 ones though - best bang for the buck, and you can always order more. the black rose is also delicious, albeit a little more expensive ($5) - sangria mixed with a margarita. while the waitresses are fun, service is slooooow and waits can be long, so don't go unless you're willing to wait. in the summer, they open the back patio for even more (extremely cramped) seating, but unfortunately this doesn't alleviate the wait time issue, as the crowd usually doubles during the summer as well. all in all, worth it if you've got the time, because you certainly don't need to spend a lot of money.

    (3)
  • Mark W.

The three stars are for the hot waitresses. The margaritas sucked (I think they were almost virgins) and the burrito tasted like cardboard. Chips and salsa are average. I really need to find good Mexican food in this city.

    (3)
  • Elizabeth R.

Good, cheap margaritas. The food was good, not excellent. I got a LOT of beans on the side with my two soft tacos and rice. I really like the atmosphere in this place. I went to the Blockheads on the UES the other night, and it was not as nice--so crowded that we actually ended up leaving because we couldn't get a seat. This Blockheads has a bar, which is nice. Anyway, overall I would definitely go back here.

    (4)
  • Tarra T.

Not to bad at all, coming form a Texas girl which makes me pretty much 1/2 Mexican! Was satisfied with the size and price of the food but the best thing - Nachos, Quesadillas and burritos - all pretty good...the Black Flower (I think that's the name). It's their Sangria-magarita-sit-you-on-your-ass-if you-have-two drink that I was extremely satisfied with. This place is no-frills, reasonably priced, pretty ediable mexican food establishment with pretty forgettable service. I'd go again for the cheap food and strong drinks.

    (3)
  • Micaela L.

Blockheads offers decent Mexican fare; this is only one of several Manhattan locations. The food is inexpensive and usually pretty good -- it helps that entrees are accompanied by free chips and salsa and CHEAP margaritas. A filling dinner + drinks can easily be had for under $20, which is pretty good for New York. In the warmer months, there is seating available in the back courtyard, under the open sky. This location is the only one I have personally visited; interestingly, some of the other locations have higher ratings. Maybe it's a neighborhood thing? It's true, though, that the service here is below average. If that doesn't bother you (or you put a cheap meal at a higher premium than excellent table service), Blockheads is worth a visit!

    (3)
  • Rebecca H.

Cheap, healthy options, food and drinks always very good. Mexican is my absolute favorite but I cannot tolerate greasy mexican food and this is not like that at all. It's very consistent, no "off" nights. On a busy night they'll tell you a 20 or 30 minute wait, but by 30 they usually mean 10 so dont let that discourage you! I also dont mind that it's completely americanized (i mean it's called blockheads afterall) and it's not gonna tear up your stomach...they never claimed to be authentic, it's their own twist on mexican and hey it works for them (and me!). it's a small space that can get loud and rowdy but that's part of the fun, go to the bigger one in murray hill if you want more room to spread out

Margaritas with upside down Coronas are way too much fun! I had a mini super chicken burrito w/a side of salad. Mini meaning that its a small version..perfect for ppl that don't want to over stuff their face. Add some of that green gooey slime looking hot sauce and you are good to go. This place def hit the spot for me!

Though the food is nothing to write home about, Blockheads does have outdoor seating (yay) and surprisingly strong $3 frozen margaritas (bigger yay). Skip the various flavored margaritas unless you like the idea of paying an extra $1 for a shot of sugar syrup that you have to mix into the drink yourself. Enchiladas were...interesting. I wouldn't use the phrase "enchilada-like" to describe them. It was a tortilla filled with rice and beans and chicken and folded in half. Looked like a taco, but filled with the contents of a burrito. Guacamole was really tasty though!

perfect drinks for such a low price. the food is decent too, but you don't really go there for the food. you must get the drinks. talk about getting a lot of bang for your buck.

I wandered into this restaurant as it looked interesting. I was disappointed. The atmosphere was okay and the decor was interesting to look at. The people at the table next to us had frozen margaritas which looked yummy though served in a plastic cup. We sat in the back near the kitchen and the hallway to the kitchen looked dirty. The wait staff was friendly. The food was mediocre. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't good either. I took half of mine home and then threw it away because I just didn't want to eat it. I got a Jerk Chick Burrito. I found myself wishing that I had gone to Chipotle.

Best margarita I've ever had. The food aint too shabby either. Some nights the food has been great and others its just been alright. Must depend on who is the cook that night. Minus 1 star for that and the bathroom in the kitchen.

Can't be beat! Chips and salsa are great (and comp'd), drink specials are off the charts, and atmosphere is fun. I really like this place because of their salad bowls. You're eating Mexican but not stuffing your face so you don't feel like total shit later. Good for a casual bite during the week,

Average Mexican food and below average service. There are a ton of better places to get similar food nearby. As everyone mentioned, you do get free chips and salsa. But I'd rather pay a few bucks for them at a restaurant where the entrees are actually good.
