This is now my favorite sandwich shop in Syracuse. A division of Riley's (an incredible Syracuse gem), this sandwich shop prides itself on an ever changing menu. It's a tight space that packs a lot of people in to place their take out orders. There is minimal seating, including two 2-tops near the back and approximately a four person window bar. On nice days there may be 2-3 tables outside. The menu is limited to a few sandwiches that are creative, tasty, and wonderfully executed. Prices are average for a downtown eatery and the atmosphere is charming. Employees are friendly and the food is amazing. I highly recommend this place and I can anticipate it being a regular haunt from now on.

Darwin's sandwiches are knock-your-socks-off good. Today, I had the Bikini Bottom Krabby Patty and buffalo bleu chips, and my girlfriend had the D's Three Little Pigs. The Krabby Patty is something that I believe SpongeBob SquarePants would be proud to serve at the Krusty Krab. The sauce, golden brown crab cake and greens really work well together in this sandwich to bring flavor and texture together for a mouth orgasm. Luckily, I know I would end up like Squidward if I had too many sandwiches. The Three Little Pigs has ham, pork and bacon on it. It is very good, and is served hot! Definitely not a sandwich for a kid. The flavor level is out of this world. The bacon alone adds a great demons ion of texture to the moist and sweet ham. The chips are alright, but I don't think they are made in house. You can get a sandwich, chips and drink for $10.50. A little pricy for a sandwich, but it is totally worth it!

The fact it's only open for a few hours a day makes Darwin a difficult place to frequent, but after trying their sandwiches for the first time, I'm a huge fan! I asked the servers what their "must-try" items were, and they suggested two sandwiches: the "It's Not Spring Chicken!" and "This Little Piggy Went to Utica." Both were priced at $9, and you can add a bag of chips and a drink for an additional $1.50. The "It's Not Spring Chicken!" has a crusted chicken breast with spinach and a medley of sauces on top. The bread was probably my favorite part--it was soft, and well-seasoned. The sandwich was somewhat sweet but had a great taste to it. However, if you're looking to be stuffed after your meal, I would recommend a heavier sandwich or getting a side on top of your meal. In contrast, the "This Little Piggy Went to Utica" was much more heavy, with its huge portions of ham and shredded pork. What I love the most about Darwin was the extremely friendly staff. The restaurant is TINY, and only has one bar and four seats for people to sit at and enjoy their meal. There is, however, benches on the side of the restaurant for you to eat outside: but I can't imagine enjoying that during the winter! If you're in Syracuse, Darwin is a must-try.

I'm not exactly sure why I haven't reviewed this place yet as it's one of our favorite sandwich shops around. It is amazing people. I have to warn you though. Their menu changes every week so you may not see your favorite sammy for days or even weeks. Fortunately I have 2 favorites that I have seen on the days I go quite a lot. The Beef martini and the Eddie muenster (yes they have unique names to match the unique ingredients). What I really love is they get their bread from local bakeries They use the stretch bread from Pastabilities for a lot of their sammys. Couple quick points though. 1- they are only open mon-fri. 2- they close wicked early...230pm 3- show up towards the end of the day and they may be running out of stuff. Go here and I promise you happiness.
(5)Marie J.
What a yummy sandwich shop! I got my order to go and was not disappointed- their menu changes often and always has a great selection. I can't wait to try more!
(4)Shannon G.
Incredible, delicious, and fun. They always offer a special that includes a drink and chips, and the menu changes weekly. The staff is ALWAYS friendly. I highly recommend coming in for lunch anytime you can. They are only open for lunch during the week, so it might be hard to frequent. Take off work or something, 100% worth it :)

WOW! This place just gave me an excellent sandwich while I was Syracuse today! I was overwhelmed at first by how small it was inside, and it was fairly busy. Somehow, my sandwich was done within a minute or two of ordering it, and it looked small. This made me skeptical. I ordered Mojo Rising, which was roasted turkey with smoked Gouda, bacon, fried egg, and hot pepper mayo. One bite, and I was sold! Whatever bread they are using was perfect for the sandwich - soft, yet it held everything together while soaking up all the flavors. It was also very filling. Definitely one of the better sandwiches I've had in my life. Next time I'm in 'Cuse, I will be back!

Every made-to-order food shop need to take some serious notes from here (not even talking about just sandwich shops). When you have an awesome product and great business model the customers will come to you out of the woodwork. I don't think I've ever seen an advertisement or coupon for Darwin because they don't need them. The sandwiches are more expensive than you'd pay at Subway, but the difference in taste and effort is immediate. I can't quite describe it, but Darwin is the best sandwich shop I've been to in the entire area code. I recommend going there on a nice clear 70° summer afternoon and eat your sandwich outside. This is the kind of meal that begs you not to take it back to work!
(5)Andrew H.
I got the most popular sandwich ordered here, which had ham and melted cheese with pepperoni. I thought it was just eh, personally, didn't think it was all that special. It was very heavy that's for sure. It wasn't a gourmet sandwich to me and had normal offerings, therefore, 3 stars!

We are on a driving mission from Sarasota Lake to Watkins Glens, ready for some good lunch & Yelps reviews convinced us Darwin's was the spot. Awesome sandwiches, stacked fat with super fresh meats, veggies & cheese! I had the "Ships in the Night", TC had the NO/Jo Turkey & Tom had the Little Piggy went to Utica. All served on Pastas stretch loaf, a fresh ciabatta type bread to die for! Wish I lived closer, I'd be there at least once a week
(5)Jeff B.
If you don't know about Darwin yet.....you probably should....I mean if it's open, GO NOW! Easily one of the top sandwich places in all of Syracuse and surrounding areas. One of my personal favorites is the Chicken Vesuvio. The ingredients are always super fresh and the flavors are excellent. I have been going to Darwin since it opened and have never had a bad experience. The owner is almost always there and they always seem to remember my name :) They greet you with a "Hello, how are you" and a "Thank you for coming" every time. Highly recommended if you like great food and great service.

One of the best places in Syracuse for Lunch and is in the downtown area. The restaurant owner is well known in Syracuse for his other restaurant, Rileys. However this place is definitely a highlight in town. Every day new sandwiches are made in the shop and their menu changes every week so theres little ability to guess whatll be there but all of their selection that Ive had was great. 1. Hot Chick - Fresh grilled chicken with buffalo sauce and creamy blue cheese dressing. The chicken was juicy and moist and the buffalo sauce was not too acidic but was enough to cut through the blue cheese. Would recommend trying it. 2. Louisana Perch - Great fried fish sandwich which wasnt too heavily breaded. you can still taste the fish. The taste came together with the mayo and pickles which kind of created a fresh tartar sauce. Would not recommend getting the tomatoes. Outside of their sandwiches which fill the board there are also sides and soups. Ive never had the soup but the sides are alright. 1. The Buffalo Mac was good, I thought that it would be spicier and have more flavor but the consistency was great. The sauce was creamy and the pasta wasnt too overcooked. 2. the blue cheese potatoes were really good. I have never had this type of potato salad before but I thought that the potatoes complimented the blue cheese. The cheese wasnt overwhelming because the potates cut through the taste. They have dessert in the form of cookies and I think Ive seen some kind of brownie there before, but theyre not the highlights. Get a sandwich! Other things to know: 1. There is very little seating available 2. The store itself is really small and it gets really packed during lunch becuase people are waiting on line for their sandwiches 3. THEY CLOSE AT 2:30 PM - TAKE NOTE of this, it will close and you will not have a sandwich.

Yummy sandwiches with cool names. Went with my hubby, and 2 preteen nieces and they loved it. Well hubby was not impressed. He got the fish sandwich that really had no flavor but could hv used some sriracha. My niece got the Nojo and wanted to save half her sandwich for her parents--4 hrs away! :). Fast service. Limited seating but well worth the $9/sandwich due to tastiness and portion size. Will stop here again should our road trips bring us here again to Syracuse.
(4)Angela L.
Finally was able to try this place. I could never get over there when it was open because of my weird schedule and it's only open for lunch. However I'm so glad I did. The people there are super down to earth. They are quick for those who need to get back to work. I ordered the "birds in pear-a-dise". One of the sellers was the Pastabilities stretch bread, the mix of sweet and savory, and the over roasted turkey breast. For a small lady I ate the whole entire sandwich, it was that good. When I was checking out I wanted a drink as well and they informed me that because I got a drink a bag of chips would be no charge. Who doesn't love those words? Can't wait to be able to go back and try some of there other sandwiches!
(5)Debbie C.
Stopped here on our way back from Canada to NJ. Sandwiches and sides were excellent! Darrell was very hospitable. Will definitely stop here again when in the area. We were tempted to stay the night in Syracuse to get tomorrow's special, a Muffaletta sandwich. Maybe next time...

For the downtown lunching businessperson, it's easy to love Darwin ("Darwin on Clinton" if you're feeling formal). The unique sandwich shop occupies a small storefront just off of Clinton Square, across the street from the Post Standard. Get your food to go, because the large demonstration kitchen leaves room-enough for just a few stools at the large, store-front window (which brightly fills the space with a lot of natural light). As for the food, Darwin takes its cue from its parent company, the Northside's famed Riley's Irish Pub. They maintain a rotating menu of the most unique sandwiches and soups in town. Ornery sandwiches, really ("Arti-CHOKE Your Chicken!" for $8.5, this week only). I've never had a sandwich from DoC that wasn't fresh. They source most of their ingredients from local farms, and their bread from local bakeries. Once you get a sandwich with Pasta's stretch bread, you'll never go back. If you're like me and like to make the most of your lunch hour, Darwin's lightening-quick turnaround makes it easy. Or better, if you're downtown (and it isn't one of Syracuse's six winter months), they'll deliver your order to you by bike. As for me, I like to stop in, because Daryl's always there, he remembers your name, knows what you like, is a super-nice guy, and will sometimes even name one of the menu items after you (my buddy Steve was a sandwich's namesake one week). The pricing makes it easy to come back, too. It's affordable, maybe even underpriced for what you get. In conclusion: I'd tell you what to order, but they change the menu all the time. But it's always delicious. Just break away for lunch and try it out! Pro-tip: They keep their website updated with the latest menu: darwinonclinton.com

Constantly changing menu at this awesome sandwich place. If you're in Syracuse you have to come here for lunch. It's always packed at lunchtime and the sandwiches never disappoint. Ships in the night (the vegetarian option) is amaaaaazing. The balsamic dressing and fried onions are awesome. I've had a bunch of the chicken options, the crab cake sandwich and some of the roast beef- all good. All the time, awesome staff too.
(5)Jenna F.
There is a reason why this place only needs to be open 4 hours a day... it is AWESOME! Had the catfish po boy and planned on only eating half of it, but it was just too good! All of the ingredients are fresh and the flavors are on point. A total must-try in Syracuse!!!
(5)Alysha A.
My husband has been telling me about the amazing sandwich he had here, and years later I finally got to go! I've never seen a flyer, ad, or commercial for this place, but after eating here I see why they don't need it. It's a SUPER small shop with just a few selections each day, but man are they some amazing choices. The kind of amazing that gets people talking. They use local shops for some (if not all) of their bread and boy does it make a difference. 'd tell you the names of the sandwiches we ate, but I forgot almost as soon as my first bite. Everything is super fresh and packed full of flavor and SUPER filling. That sandwich looks small, but it's a lie. If you are nearby, you have to stop in and see why they don't need to pay for advertising!
(5)Jeffrey L.
Co-workers didn't have a bad thing to say about it, so I gave it a try. For as small as it is and as crowded as it was, the service was unbelievably fast. I'll be back as soon as I can. The sandwich (South of the Birder) was excellent, can't wait to try some others.

The best way to describes Darwin's is that it is an artisan sandwich shop. Darwin's offers distinct and flavorful sandwiches that force you to wonder if the sandwich makers are, indeed, culinary sorcerers. Darwin's Buffalo Mac and Cheese is divine. The mac and cheese delivers to your taste buds a tinge of heat and creamy goodness. Darwin's Perfect Storm sandwich is a seafood delight, offering a scrumptious crab and haddock on a freshly baked sesame loaf with a side of pepper mayo. The Perfect Storm sandwich is a fish sandwich the doesn't leave you feeling as though you spent a day on a fishing wharf; the sandwich is mild and fresh. Darwin's is great for a quick bite. However, my biggest frustrations with Darwin's is its hours. Only open between 9-230, Darwin's is strictly a lunch time restaurant, which can make it hard to get to especially if you are not working in the downtown area. However, Darwin's friendly staff and delicious sandwiches makes of for its hours of operation.

I've been missing out, don't let that happen to you. If you enjoy sandwiches made with pride from a staff that really cares, you can't miss this. Never bothered to notice what went on inside here until the local paper published their list of best sandwiches. Had to stop in to try their version of the muffuletta as I haven't gotten to New Orleans to try the real thing. Parking was no problem, you do have to pay for parking during enforcement hours or that food might be really expensive. Happy customers were picking up their orders with obvious joy and the folks putting the sandwiches together actually looked like they were enjoying work. Got my sandwich fast along with a side of the Buffalo Mac. The mac was gone before I pulled out of my parking space. The muffuletta made it back to the office, but not long beyond that. Now I can get started on the ever-changing " Board." Darwin has good stuff.

Some great sandwiches! If you are looking for something light and delicious go for the summertime lobster roll. It is light, refreshing and delicious. Seriously... I didn't expect a lobster roll to be so light, but they don't overdo it on the mayo. Darwin does the lobster justice. The optimus prime rib is another must try. The combination of meats with sauce and the fresh bread is absolutely delicious. Most of the sandwiches in the end comes to ~$10 after tax. This place reminds me of my favorite deli at home in that they both do classic, simple sandwiches with finesse and sometimes a twist. Definitely worth a try if you are living in the Syracuse area.

Tried Darwins for the first time today. Found it using Yelp. Ordered the roast beef sandwich. It was very good. Fresh roll, decent amount of beef, lots of horseradish, and the mushrooms were a nice touch. Will go back soon.

Most impressive, unique sandwich shop in Syracuse. It was the coldest, windiest day of the year, but my boyfriend and I decided to try ice skating anyhow. What fools we were. Twenty minutes later, barely able to feel our toes, we walked from Clinton Square over to Darwin's. Limping in we decided to split a sandwich to save money and stick to our New Year's resolution: dieting. We should know better at this point, we can't resist good food! We ordered the Hot Chick which consisted of chicken breast, hot sauce, creamy blue cheese, lettuce, and frizzled onions (tasted more like delicious fried batter than onions) on amazing stretch bread. Well, it was out of this world. It was hot, flavorful and mildly spicy. I would have liked to have more hot sauce, but that's a personal preference of mine. It wasn't very spicy but it was more about the flavor than eating something to make your mouth burn. I loved the crunch of the onions. My boyfriend is not an onion person, so he was worried, but it turned out they didn't have a strong flavor. They really enhanced the sandwich. The best part: their bread. It's from Pastabilities' bakery, called Pasta's, and it is so damn good. It sops up all the flavors and just blends perfectly with everything else. It's soft but a stable support for the sandwich and has amazing flavor. I could eat the bread just by itself (which you can if you run over to Pasta's bakery). Before we knew it, our little half of heaven was eaten and we felt saddened that it was over. "...Want to try the Once in a Blue Moon?", my boyfriend asks guiltily. "Um, of course!", I respond eagerly. There goes our diets... We were so impressed by the first one, we decided to split a different one. The Once in a Blue Moon had beef, melted bleu, balsamic red onions, mushrooms and ranch. While it wasn't as much of a wow as the first one, it was still very good. I like bleu cheese a lot, but at points the taste was almost overpowering. Otherwise, it was quite satisfying. The beef was of good quality, I didn't really taste the onions too much, and I thought the mushrooms made the sandwich. The ranch, I presume, mixed with the bleu gave the sandwich a nice, creamy, oozing sauce that was sopped up by the same amazing Pasta's stretch bread. All of the flavors melded into a delicious sandwich. Overall, this place is quite amazing. The workers are very pleasant and I like that their menu changes (an evolving menu at Darwin's lol) but they eventually come back to the same sandwiches depending on the week. I have been here before and my other favorite is Ships in the Night. For the quality and taste of the sandwiches, I would say the prices are fair. With tax, each sandwich came to $9, which is decent for a lunch. I will definitely be coming back when I'm in the mood for a delicious sandwich.
(5)Alfredo C.
Great place for a lunch bite. The sandwiches are delicious and the atmosphere is cool. I had the Optimus prime and it was fantastic. My wife had the vesuvio chicken and she ate it so fast I couldn't take a picture. I guess by the look on her face that it was really good.
(4)Victory G.
All the positive reviews have already said it - this is a great place. Friendly staff, amazing and innovative sandwiches, fair prices. It's a very small place, so plan to grab and go with your food. I'd love to see them expand a bit, but the concept seems to work for them, so maybe it's best not to mess with it!
(4)Patrick B.
I underestimated Darwin when my friends would talk about it. Then I finally went for lunch and wow it was good. My friend had me get something with an egg on top (don't remember the sandwich) but holy cow it was delicious. Portion wasn't as big as I hoped, but only half of it filled me right up, so no problems there. Cool little place right by everything. This place is a must and I do recommend it for sure!
(5)Kevin N.
Came here while passing through town, and it was the best chicken sandwich I have ever had. I'm trying to think of trips back to Syracuse so I can have it again! Great staff and awesome food. So glad I was able to eat here.
(5)Sumeet J.
The best sandwich place in Syracuse, I have yet to have a bad experience here. The people here are extremely friendly and they make great sandwiches. Highly recommend!
(5)Eric D.
As an out of towner in for work I yelped this place and I was not disappointed. Tiny little place with huge taste. I was blown away by the smells and the friendly staff. Food was even better! With a constantly changing menu and fresh ideas and ingredients you can't go wrong. I'd make my way back here any time. Just be aware they are only open four hours a day.
(5)Monica M.
Stopped in for a quick bite while downtown. I'd been wanting to try it forever, and it didn't let me down. Friendly staff, good portions, and all delicious! Didn't have too difficult a time finding on street parking.
(5)Ryan G.
Fantastic. Each sandwich is unlike anything you've had. And they change the menu every two weeks. Must go!
(5)Patricia J.
Wish there was a little more seating, but the food is excellent. If I could, I'd give Darwins 41/2 stars. Try the Eddie Munster. You'll love it.
(4)Jim E.
Every time I go I have had the best sandwich of my life to date. Even though it's essentially take out, it's well worth the trip. The little Piggy went to Utica was especially delicious.
(5)Kari B.
Excellent sandwiches and great service. Menu is not extensive, but changes biweekly and always includes a vegetarian option. More than your standard deli fare, combinations are proven, but still interesting. Salads, soup, chips and drinks also available. Seating is limited, but in the summer you can eat at tables outside or just walk across the street to Clinton Square.
(5)Glenna P.
One of my favorite places in Syracuse! These are some of the best sandwiches I have ever had...and I LOVE sandwiches. If the great food wasn't reason enough to come the staff is super friendly and helpful. If you are in Syracuse you should definitely be eating at Darwin!
(5)Brian G.
Darwin is one of the true gems of Syracuse. Fantastic sandwiches on a rotating menu along with friendly and lively service. Located conveniently for downtown lunch breaks, this is really one of the best sandwich places in town.
(5)Steven B.
This is a very welcome addition to Syracuse. This is a place that values innovation. They're menu is constantly changing, sandwiches added and removed each week. I ordered the Hawaii 5.0 and was blown away by how much thought must have gone into the flavor and texture combination. The pork, ham and Swiss would have made for a good sandwich on their own. Shredded pork had a wonderfully soft texture on the same brad they used, and the lettuce have it a slight crisp. The fried onions were just slightly crunchy on the outside but spiffy and juicy inside. I was a little worried about mayo, but they use just the smallest amount to add a little bit of flavor without filling your mouth the consistency of yogurt. And the savory tastes were countered perfectly with the sweetness of pineapple salsa and chili. I'm the type of person who always tries to order something new, but I'd the Hawaii 5.0 gets a permanent menu spot I may find it hard to follow that creed at Darwin's!
(5)sabrina t.
Hands down, best place to get lunch in SYR. They always mix it up, its always crowded, the service is great... and its just a lot of fun. The menu changes every two weeks and there's always something for everybody. I go each week, because I don't want to miss a thing. Prices are great, not much else to say besides the fact that i love it!
(5)Shang X.
Great sandwiches and menu changes every two weeks. Perfect place for lunch! There is typically 1 or 2 vegetarian sandwiches for those that don't like meat. Also the buffalo Mac and cheese is awesome, go early because it sells out. Further get the cheesy tots, same as above. Even open until 7 pm on Fridays.
(5)Jason M.
When I first walked in, I was greeted very nicely. This establishment has had the best service I've encountered. The staff were wickedly friendly and helpful. I ordered some sort of chicken sandwich with a creative name added to it. It had the perfect blend of ingredients, however, the DiLauro's bread was too hard to chew and I was severely disappointed. I'm sure to come back later and hopefully my experience wi be perfect.
(4)Xin W.
5-Star sandwich restaurant. My friend and I were there yesterday for lunch and let me tell you that the food was absolutely great! I got the chicken sandwich which was recommended to me by the server... one of the best decisions in my life. There isn't much room to eat inside but outside they usually have tables setup if its nice out and there are always benches to the side. A great place to take a date for something causal. I would either recommend Darwin's or Street Eats if your looking for a sandwich place in Syracuse!
(5)Patrick M.
The sandwiches are well worth the price, but the soups and side dishes you can pass on. Their rotating menu with new additions every week means there is always something to look forward to! Check their website for an up-to-date menu. Truly a great sandwich shop!
(5)Timothy J.
Nice little place you would never find if you are from out of town and didn't have Yelp. Unique revolving menu that changes every 2 weeks. Very creative flavor combinations come together to make a delicious sandwich. Son of a preacher man was a great sandwich with a surprising Asian infusion with sweet chili sauce. My buddy had the Hungry like a wolf that looked as good as mine tasted. I was impressed.
(4)Megan M.
As an out of towner, I was very happy to stop in to Darwin for a bite to eat. The owner proudly holds down the kitchen, and from the line at lunch, the place seems to be pretty successful. Don't be intimidated if the wait seems overwhelming - I've never seen a line move faster, they'll get you in an out. I had the po boy and mac and cheese. If I were to go again, probably wouldn't get both unless I was trying to develop gout. They mac and cheese was creamy and delicious, but perhaps a little too decadant for my tastes. The po boy was excellent - but perhaps a bit too bready. I ended up taking the top off to cut down on the carb overload. If I worked in the area, I'd probably go once a week, but as an Ohioan, I'll definitely stop here again if I'm in the area.
(4)Rayelle C.
I had the chicken and biscuits and it was ok. I'm from the South, I've had better. I went with a friend, and we both got free buffalo macaroni and cheese which tasted good and was very nice of them. What i didn't like, was when my friend (obviously Asian) gave his name (an American name) for his order, the employee said "but really, what's your name?" Ummmm what? Completely inappropriate.
(3)Deidre D.
If you are looking for heaven in a sandwich, you have come to the right place! Everything I have ever had from this place is to die for! Food is amazing and inventive. Prices are very reasonable and staff is amazing! I only wish they were open more!
(5)andrya h.
Best Sandwich I have ever had. I love that they take and use ideas from customers. Small, and charming.... And oh so friendly. Don't miss out on this gem. Three words. Kentucky Fried Bacon.
(5)Nate C.
I went here based on Yelp recommendations. I was pleasantly surprised to see a modern deli with an innovative menu in downtown Syracuse. The best part of my experience was the service- everyone I interacted with was friendly and helpful. This sounds like it should happen everywhere but it doesn't. It was evident that the staff liked their jobs. The sandwich I had was good. I would say it was similar in quality to the Blue Tusk. The buffalo Mac 'n cheese was ok: it was essentially farfalle noodles with hot sauce and blue cheese. The only other detractor was a lack of seating. It seems designed more as a grab and go for locals. However, I'd go back again based on a good sandwich and great service.
(4)Laura K.
Absolutely amazing sandwiches. We bought 3 and shared and every single one was delicious. The people working there were super nice and the sandwiches, though complicated, were prepared quickly. I think the other reviews do this place justice for being delicious, unique, creative, warm, and delicious.
(5)Shiloh M.
Made a pit stop here to eat lunch. Got three different sandwiches and their potato salad and they were all sooooo good! I definitely recommend coming here!
(5)Stacey R.
Chicken Vesuvio sandwich was delish!! Perfect size chicken breast and tasty pesto dressing! Lobster roll only so-so as I don't like celery in my lobster. Service was superb.
(4)Amelia L.
I didn't know this famous sandwich store until I'm leaving syracuse!! And it's so close to the dinosaur BBQ!!! I was so disappointed at myself finding it so late. I spent all my lunch time there several days before I left Syracuse. I went there at 10 am for my last meal in Syracuse. The guys told me that they were making preparations and were not able to provide sandwich within one hour!! So I left in hunger. Although they do open at 9:30 but they won't be able to offer foods until 11. Love their lobster roll, you could really see the shape of the lobster claw. Vegetable sandwich is also amazing!! Even though I don't like vegetable salads, I like their vegetable sandwich a lot!!! Hopefully I could get back one day and have their sandwich again soon!!
(5)Sara H.
Just started working in Syracuse this week and Darwin happens to be right across the street, so when I got brave and decided to venture out of the office for lunch, I headed there. Not only is the service friendly, prompt and just generally awesome, but their buffalo mac and cheese may be my new obsession.
(5)Rob L.
I found Darwin on Yelp and have it a try a week and a half ago. As soon as I found myself traveling through Syracuse again today, I instantly thought of stopping again. This time, I had the "Here today, Gone to Maui", which was amazing! The pineapple/cole slaw combination with bacon and onion strips, tastes much better than it sounds! With a side of Stuffed Pepper soup, I know that I will definitely be stopping in the next time I come through Syracuse.

Wow, it looks like I remain in the minority when it comes to Darwin. After a so-so visit a year ago, I ventured back today as I had the day off for MLK day. This time a got a turkey sandwich with bacon, I forget the clever name they had for it. The sandwich was tasty but for what I paid for it, it did not knock my socks off. I got the sandwich and a side and was shocked when the $10 I had in my hand was not enough! Don't get me wrong, Darwin makes a good sandwich but for me, it doesn't live up to the hype or the money it cost me.
(3)Jason L.
You cannot get a better sandwich in Syracuse.
(5)Elin R.
I live practically next door to Darwin's but have a hard time getting there since their hours are only for lunch. Today I had a meeting at City Hall and made sure to make a quick detour to Darwin's before heading back up the hill to work. I am so glad that I did. I got the Son of Preacher Man without mayo but with the chili sauce. All I can say is wow! When they say roast turkey they mean REAL roast turkey. None of that processed turkey meat you get a the deli counter at the grocery store. The country fried bacon is a nice twist as is the roasted tomato with Parmesan.
(5)Matt O.
"Nobody goes there anymore; it's too crowded." Can't take credit for that line, but it fits. When Darwin's on, it's a great lunch spot. Daryl, Dave, and Mel are as nice as anyone you'll meet in the restaurant business. Generous, sincere, funny folks. Creative, too - Darwin's come up with 50+ sandwiches over the past three years; all are some degree of good. But if those guys are not involved in the making of the sandwiches, the quality's noticeably off. So is it worth waiting in line to be served a merely OK sandwich by people who are unfriendly? Sure, if you're hungry. But it detracts from Darwin as a destination lunch spot and doesn't make for a five-star experience.
(3)Jared G.
Ate there today, got the lobster roll, it was EXCELLENT. A couple of important notes: 1) It was about 90 degrees outside today. They "technically" have AC in there, but just barely. It was probably about 85 in there, so if it's really hot out, plan to take it to go. 2) Parking around there seems to all be metered, so bring some change or a CC. 3) The door says they take Visa, Master Card, and I want to say Discover, but for the hell of it, I tried my AmEx, and it went through without issue, so it appears they take American Express as well. I'm in town for the week for work and I'll tell you this, I normally explore for meals, but my lunches are going to be there every day.
(5)M K.
Discovered this via yelp during a work trip in Syracuse. I will forever dream about the Optimus prime sandwich with the cheese sauce and fried green tomato (recipe?? PLEASE?!) And my sandwich during a prior trip was equally wonderful. Incredibly personable staff as an added plus. Darwin's creative sandwiches were bright spot during my crappy work travel, for sure....
(5)Sasha S.
Darwins makes the best sandwiches you could hope to find. The staff is friendly and the sandwiches fill you up. I personally don't care for their side dishes but continue to go back for their fish and chicken sandwiches. Call and order ahead as this place is always busy.
(5)Ally C.
Non stop hell yeah. I discovered Darwin my senior year at Syracuse University and it was a big bummer, I wish I had been going there since freshman year. I've never had a sandwich I didn't like, always deliciously interesting. GO! You won't be disappointed.
(5)Chris C.
Since I have a job that isn't in the city, I have never had the opportunity to try Darwin since their hours are so restrictive. Someone was nice enough to pick us up a couple sandwiches recently to try them out. Wow, good stuff. Based on the praise, I opted to try the Ships in the Night even though it has no meat on it. What an awesome sandwich. Everything meshes so well together. I did not miss the meat at all. Their menu changes on what seems like a daily basis so there is always something new to try. And they all sound awesome. My only complaint is the hours. If they opened on Saturday for a couple hours, I would buy a lot of sandwiches from them.
(5)Jen S.
If quality, flavor and friendly faces are important to you Darwin is the place to pick up lunch. I had the Two Ships and was so pleasantly surprised by the combinations of flavors and I swear I could taste the absolute affection and dedication that everyone behind the counter was putting into their work. A divine sandwich at a decent price. Fish fry Friday....whoa delicious . I cashed in twice one week during Lent. Thank you Catholics. I have also experienced some soups and scones ( that never made it home because they were amazing and buttery and irresistible.) all were of the highest quality and freshness. I've noticed some reviews complain about the prices. My theory is you get what you pay for, and here you are truly getting the best. It's not a chain restaurant, you're supporting local economy and agriculture. I don't go out to eat to save money, for convenience or to get a "bargain." I go for the experience of delicious food. Darwin does not disappoint on any level. Friendly faces at the counter and wonderful sandwiches, simply the best.
(5)Jillain S.
The food here is amazing! Everything I've ever had has been delicious. I used to work around the corner but I've moved about a mile away but, we will still order from there every now & again. It's worth the short drive!
(5)Eric T.
Best sandwiches ever!! I love how the menu changes every week, and the staff is super friendly. It can get a bit crowded at lunch time during the week. I like to sit at one of the small tables outside and eat. The buffalo mac and cheese is great!
(5)Matt B.
The sandwiches here are great. You can close you eyes and point randomly at the menu and you'll be happy with what you get. It's true that it gets crowded there at times, but it's worth the wait. You can always call in an order if you are in a rush.
(5)Matt C.
I have never been to a better sandwich shop, probably because there is no better sandwich shop (certainly in Syracuse) Not only does Darwin have unbelievably creative and tasty sandwiches, but there service is incredible. However, one thing I don't think has been adequately reviewed and is often missed at Darwin is their incredible soups, which are a great accompaniment to their sandwiches. Go to Eva's or Dinosaur for dinner, but if you have on lunch to have in Syracuse, go to Darwin. My recommendation is to bring a friend split two sandwiches and at least one soup.
(5)Shauna R.
Amazing sandwiches and mac and cheese. The staff are SO nice and the service is fast. I love this place!
(5)Tim S.
If I were to pick one place to eat lunch in Syracuse, it would have to be Darwin. But if I had to pick one sandwich there, I don't know if I could. The Midnight Train to Georgia, the Hungry Like the Wolf, This Little Piggy Went to Utica, the lobster roll and so many others are just so good. Daryl, Dave and Mel will make you feel at home even if they are busy. And they will be busy. It's no secret that this little shop has the best sandwiches in town, but you'll be in and out quickly and you'll be very happy that you came.
(5)Christian T.
I have been here a dozen or so times in the last year and, without hesitation I can say this is the best sandwich in Syracuse in my humble opinion. I know placing any sandwich above Brooklyn Pickle in Syracuse is considered heresy but, there it is, I said it. I have tried several sandwiches but my favorite has to be the Bikini Bottom Krabby Patty, a Maryland-Style crab cake sandwich. The Fish Fry on Friday is also amazing. If you live in Syracuse this is a must try.
(5)Tom S.
Darwin makes the best sandwiches I've ever had. This is easily my favorite place to eat in Syracuse. Their ever-changing menu is awesome because it forces you to try new things, and the new things are ALWAYS great. The staff are all very friendly, and my only complaint about Darwin is that it's not open on weekends! I get most of my Darwin cravings on the weekends and I'm always disappointed that I can't get my fix.
(5)Sarah C.
AMMMAAZZZIINNGGG!! I really can't say enough about this place!! Never a bad sandwich! I just wish they were open longer!!!
(5)Vlad G.
Yelp to the rescue once AGAIN! I read the negative reviews first, and I gotta say, people are insane. Sandwiches are amazing, you can put anything between two slices of artisan bread and it's going to taste delicious. Darwin's makes a damn good sandwich, and its actually different. I tried two sandwiches on my first visit. Their menu changes quite frequently and also I didn't bother remembering what they were called. Sorry. Both were perfectly distinct and savory. It's not a new cuisine from a galaxy far far away, but for a sandwich in Syracuse, NY it's a goldmine. *My lady reminds me that we had something with pork, the three little piggy maybe and "Spring Chicken." Again, the menu changes almost weekly it seems so, I can't promise that either will be available. Enjoy.
(5)Erin W.
I've been hearing about Darwin's from friends for quite a while. I am happy I finally tried it. Parking is a bit of an issue right now with road construction but a short walk from a lot is well worth it. I ordered the lobster roll ($13) and cranberry coleslaw ($1.50). The lobster roll was wonderful. Lobster was slightly chilled to a perfect temperature and the butter sauce it was tossed in was flavorful but light enough not to take away from the flavor of the lobster. The Cranberry coleslaw was extremely fresh, however, I felt it could use a little more herbs or seasoning. Overall it was a fantastic experience. I highly recommend it. Hours are until around 2:00 pm Monday-Friday.
(4)Camille C.
This place is a revelation. I've never had ANYTHING bad here. I love it so much that I actually took 10 minutes of my life to figure out my long-lost Yelp password. If it were closer to the hill, it'd be perfect, but I'd also gain 15 pounds, since I can't resist any sandwich that comes with bacon. I will put anything these folks give me in my mouth, so it's a good thing they're all so nice! I had a sample of a new (to me) side today. 'Twice-baked' something. I didn't see the whole name, and I don't even care, it was delicious. The menu changes regularly, so if you have something that you love, write its name down! I'm trying to remember my favorites, but the only ones I can remember are the 3 Piggys (3 types of pig-derived meat, including bacon, and ALL delicious), Mojo Rising (Turkey, a fried egg, and probably bacon), and Son of a Preacher Man (turkey and COUNTRY-FRIED bacon!), which is the one I had today. You can't go wrong with anything here, including the sides. My usual side is the buffalo mac, but next time, I'll have to try that twice-baked business. Lastly, I don't get the folks complaining about the cost. A sandwich will run you $7-8 here, which may be expensive if you're used to McDonald's, but I'm pretty sure that a sandwich at PANERA costs about the same or more, and their food is boring as anything. Good ingredients cost more money than mass-produced crap food. No deli meat here! P.S. Vegetarians, fear not. Their veggie sandwich is delicious, according to my friends, and a regular on the menu, and their salads always look amazing. I haven't tried any of them because of my bacon thing, but I trust my friends' opinions.
(5)Andrew S.
This is THE BEST SANDWICH shop in Syracuse and perhaps the world. Fresh ingredients, bread and ideas. To those people who think it is expensive, what did you want? A subway sub with unripe tomatoes for $5? This place is steeped in creativity and if you don't go here you are missing out.
(5)Justin W.
I don't usually leave yelp reviews, but I had to leave one here. I had the Son of a Preacher man. That was the best sandwich I've had in years! Try it out!
(5)Fo B.
Great sandwich shop on Clinton Street, just around the corner from Dino BBQ. Well designed and excellently constructed sandwiches. Great staff. Even though Clinton is N to S one way, it's worth the drive around the block to go here. So go.
(4)Susan R.
This gem has some of the best sandwiches in syracuse. Very filling and tasty and the best part is you can always get new things, every couple of weeks or so they change up their menu. The only problem with that is one week you could love something the next it could be gone, but no worries, most of the time they will repeat favorites. Staff always remember their customers and are very friendly.
(5)Ren L.
Small place. Best to grab and go. Had a Caprese Salad with bread. It was delicious. The service was the fastest I've ever seen anywhere. The environment in store is chaotic and loud. As I said, best to grab and go.
(4)Christina M.
This place is RIDICULOUSLY good! Totally worth the price- the sandwiches are huge! Seriously the best sandwich place in Syracuse- I just wish it was open on the weekends. I have had the roast beef/blue cheese creation, the pastrami (which is unlike any pastrami I've ever had), the crab cake sandwich (which is HUGE) and the Mufuletta- which is one of their signature sandwiches. I have to say, the roast beef and crabcake are my favorites so far... I can't wait to try the others! Plus their mac n' cheese is amazing.... if you've never tried Darwin, you are missing out!!
(5)John W.
Phenomenal sandwiches, with a wonderful rotating menu. Super friendly staff. I'll be heading back as often as possible, but their hours (weekdays only, till ~2:30 PM) can make that difficult, unfortunately. If you are ever in downtown Syracuse or near the Syracuse area during the week, head here for lunch -- you won't be disappointed!
(5)Paul M.
When this place first opened, I thought: W.T.F! The food is way too good, and seems underpriced - in Syracuse? - will it still be here in a few months? And the happy answer is yes - Darwin is thriving. As many reviewers have noted, this place serves the best high-end sandwiches in town. They make a phenomenal lobster roll, the tastiest meatball sandwich I've ever had, great turkey and chicken breast sandwiches, a muffuletta, a Cuban sandwich. Also some great sides: I love the cranberry cole slaw, the grilled corn, and the fancy beet salad. The sandwich portions are perfect, and the portions of sides are generous. The menu changes daily, but I haven't had anything that wasn't awesome. Everything's made from top-notch ingredients: house-made dressings, house-cooked turkey and chicken, locally sourced meatball mix, fresh greens, excellent bread. The ingredient quality exceeds all but a handful of restaurants in town. The sandwiches are $7-10, salads are $6, and sides are $3. As I noted, since my first visit I thought this place was underpriced, so I'm surprised other reviewers find it pricey. If food quality is important to you, I think you'd find the prices fair, and if you'll pay extra for higher-quality food, I think you'll find it a great value. This place is for take-out lunch and breakfast. The location is cute, in the shade, a hundred feet from Clinton Square. There's not much seating - maybe eight chairs inside, eight chairs outside - but I usually sit at a table or bench in the Square. The staff are very friendly and very attentive. Seriously, I love this place. It's sometimes hard to find a parking space on W Genesee, but there are always empty spaces in the free, 12-minute parking opposite Clinton Square (right in front of the Post-Standard), and the pay-to-park spaces on Herald Place between Clinton and Salina. In the past I've thought the sandwiches were too rich - generous with the cheese and dressing. On my last two visits the dressing seemed moderate, so maybe Darryl, Dave, and crew reduced the fat calories a bit. Also, for months there wasn't a vegetarian offering, but it looks like Two Ships Passing in the Night is now a regular feature.
(5)Mike S.
"Great place! Fun people. Loved the soup and sandwiches. THE place to lunch in Syracuse."
(5)Alexis W.
AMAZING sandwich experience, by far the best in Syracuse. Large sandwiches, savory and packed with flavor. As I have not experienced the friendliest of wait staff in Syracuse, Darwin exceeds my expectations; the staff is extremely helpful and generally very nice.
(5)kathleen m.
If you have not been here yet......get moving! Outta this world sandwiches and salads......great staff.....super friendly and call you by your first name....check in with you make sure you are happy.....like it won't be obvious. three little pigs sandwich....omg.....and the sliced beet, bleu cheese and spicy nuts on a bed of FRESH baby spinachSalad with house made creamy balsamic vinaigrette....oh, yes. Cannot wait to get back there :)
(5)Bro H.
This place serves a quite good, appropriately-priced sandwich. Should you make a special effort to get there during their terrible hours? Probably not. Should you swing by if you're in the area during lunch on a weekday? Absolutely.
(4)Rick M.
One if the best sandwiches I've ever had. The three little pigs was awesome. Would be 5 stars but I need to go back for a second taste. The service was great as well.
(4)Wesley W.
Darwin is a weekly trip for me. These guys are phenomenal. They make absolutely the best sandwiches in Syracuse, hands down. Pair that with an insanely friendly staff... it just doesn't get any better. I've had at least one of most of their sandwiches and I am always completely satisfied. The Midnight Train is a MUST try, as is their Buffalo Mac. I haven't had the Two Ships, as I am not a big vegetarian person, but I am sure that it would be delicious anyways. These guys are simply awesome and deserve every ounce of praise they receive here. See you there for Fish Fry Frydays!
(5)Miles T.
Best sandwich shop ANYWHERE! Nice to have a menu that changes so you can try new things and it keeps the experience fresh. The owner is friendly and you can tell love goes into the food.
(5)G F.
I had the best sandwich I have ever eaten today! I can't stop talking about it and wish they were open on weekends so I could go back again tomorrow before heading home. I highly recommend!! Can't wait to come back and eat here again.
(5)Rita C.
DELICIOUS! The best part is that I am always greeted by a smile and a warm greeting. I had the ArtiChoke Your Chicken and Ships Passing in the Night. Both unforgettable. Easily two of the best sandwiches I've ever had.
(5)Kirby B.
This is probably the best sandwich place I have EVER seen by far. It's about $8 for a sandwich which is about 1/3 a loaf of Italian bread (today's was Pasta's bread). The service is so friendly that it is impossible to leave without a smile on your face....and then you start eating the food. I split 2 sandwiches with my gf and each ingredient in each sandwich was of the highest quality, and the taste combinations were utterly amazing. I would highly recommend Darwin for your next weekday lunch.
(5)Tae-Sun K.
So far, best sandwich shop in Syracuse. Had the This Little Piggy Went to Utica and Hungry Like a Wolf . . . both excellent. Good serving size and love the location. Took away one star because the sandwiches are pretty expensive.
(4)Joe O.
Very good artisan sandwiches here. Highly recommend the "Midnight Train to Georgia" the "Shrimp Po Boy" and the Utica Greens and pork sandwich. I'd eat here more often if it wasn't as expensive. Lunches (sandwich, soup or side & drink) can easily push $15.
(4)Justen N.
I tried this restaurant on a whim one day and have been at least once a week since. I remember feeling extra spontaneous and trying one sandwich that I otherwise wouldn't have and thinking it was the best sandwich I'd ever had. I don't even remember the name, but it was this beef sandwich on Pastas Daily Bread stretch bread with some sauce over it, but it was phenomenal. Now, I don't even mind the changing menu; I just assume that whatever they're selling that day is going to be good.
(5)Liv K.
Finally had a chance to try Darwin this week and wish I had much sooner. The sandwiches are the perfect size, ingredients are fresh, and the staff are super friendly! My two friends had the Cuban, I had the Two Ships vegetarian sandwich and everyone was more than happy with the goods. Great place, we will be back!
(5)Nancy C.
We here at Smiles by Design LOVE the Darwin Sammys!!!!!!!!! Never knowing which one we want because it's hard to choose, we all order different and split them between us to get a taste of all. Best in Syracuse!
(5)C L.
Love the sammy's at Darwin's! This place does not disappoint. Quick, friendly service and delish food. Nice & easy access off the highway too!
(5)Lola M.
Great love it here they just close too early
(5)Will M.
Amazing food, friendly people. Quite simply the best sandwiches in Syracuse.
(5)Sarah R.
(5)James S.
(5)Chris B.
(5)Jane H.
(5)joshua d.
(4)Andrew A.
(3)Sara A.
The limited hours can be a turn off or at least a work around. But it is worth making the effort. Sandwich varieties you don't see around. The mix of ingredients and fresh bread make for a great lunch. If you want to eat in you won't find many seats. Better off getting take out.
(4)Eileen C.
(5)Jack X.
(4)Shantel M.
(5)Jared B.

There is a reason why this place only needs to be open 4 hours a day... it is AWESOME! Had the catfish po boy and planned on only eating half of it, but it was just too good! All of the ingredients are fresh and the flavors are on point. A total must-try in Syracuse!!!

(5)Laura S.
(4)Ryan G.
(4)Deidre D.
If you are looking for heaven in a sandwich, you have come to the right place! Everything I have ever had from this place is to die for! Food is amazing and inventive. Prices are very reasonable and staff is amazing! I only wish they were open more!
(5)Rayelle C.
(3)andrya h.
(4)Ann K.
(3)Elin R.
(5)Eric T.
Best sandwiches ever!! I love how the menu changes every week, and the staff is super friendly. It can get a bit crowded at lunch time during the week. I like to sit at one of the small tables outside and eat. The buffalo mac and cheese is great!
(5)Jillain S.
The food here is amazing! Everything I've ever had has been delicious. I used to work around the corner but I've moved about a mile away but, we will still order from there every now & again. It's worth the short drive!

Small place. Best to grab and go. Had a Caprese Salad with bread. It was delicious. The service was the fastest I've ever seen anywhere. The environment in store is chaotic and loud. As I said, best to grab and go.

You cannot get a better sandwich in Syracuse.
(5)Christina M.

(5)Rayelle C.
(3)andrya h.
Best Sandwich I have ever had. I love that they take and use ideas from customers. Small, and charming.... And oh so friendly. Don't miss out on this gem. Three words. Kentucky Fried Bacon.
(5)Deidre D.
If you are looking for heaven in a sandwich, you have come to the right place! Everything I have ever had from this place is to die for! Food is amazing and inventive. Prices are very reasonable and staff is amazing! I only wish they were open more!

Amazing food, friendly people. Quite simply the best sandwiches in Syracuse.
(5)Sarah R.
(5)Andrew A.
(5)Chris B.
(3)Sara A.
The limited hours can be a turn off or at least a work around. But it is worth making the effort. Sandwich varieties you don't see around. The mix of ingredients and fresh bread make for a great lunch. If you want to eat in you won't find many seats. Better off getting take out.
(4)Eileen C.

(5)James S.
(5)Jane H.

What a yummy sandwich shop! I got my order to go and was not disappointed- their menu changes often and always has a great selection. I can't wait to try more!

(4)Joseph N.
(4)Johnny D.

(5)Tom S.
Tried Darwins for the first time today. Found it using Yelp. Ordered the roast beef sandwich. It was very good. Fresh roll, decent amount of beef, lots of horseradish, and the mushrooms were a nice touch. Will go back soon.
(5)Laura S.

(4)Kevin N.
(4)Sara H.
Just started working in Syracuse this week and Darwin happens to be right across the street, so when I got brave and decided to venture out of the office for lunch, I headed there. Not only is the service friendly, prompt and just generally awesome, but their buffalo mac and cheese may be my new obsession.
(5)Xin W.
(4)Jen S.
(5)Ann K.
(3)Rob L.
(4)Elin R.
(5)Megan M.
(4)Andrew S.

(5)Justin W.
I don't usually leave yelp reviews, but I had to leave one here. I had the Son of a Preacher man. That was the best sandwich I've had in years! Try it out!
(5)Rick M.
Enjoy.
(5)Jason L.
You cannot get a better sandwich in Syracuse.
Absolutely.
