Synopsis: ZERO for BAD service and for Neglectful wait staff. Service was ULTRA Slow cuz there were only 2 servers for the night. No bartender or bussers to assist. Probably only ONE person or house elf in the kitchen cooking all the meals. Long version: We walked in and the hostess/wait staff saw us. She proceeded to seat people ahead of us, but never came back for us. Waited for several minutes. *Waiting*Waiting*Hello? Anybody home?* Finally, a male staff came out to give us a table. Got menus and drinks. Waited another 20 minutes or so. Sat there *twirl thumbs* felt neglected and forgotten (Sat in the middle of the main dining room. Hard to miss us. Plus, we were the only people w/out bread basket or food.). *Waiting*Waiting*Looking around Trying to get waiter's attention*More Waiting*Trying not to pass out from starvation* We could see that they were busy. Only 2 wait staff (one of them was the hostess who ignored us) taking orders and making drinks. No bartender or bussers in sight. *Waiting*Waiting*Eating our fingers*Getting ready to eat the table* Saw what other ppl ordered and we're salivating. Read reviews from other Yelpers about 'slow service.' Add 'forgotten' and 'neglected' to the list. Seriously?! To be forgotten by our server? This is a restaurant not an orphanage. Couldn't wait any longer. Didn't want to order and wait another 3 hrs for food. Paid for our drinks and left. Didn't even get a chance to try the food. We're starving!!! Do not misunderstand. We do not mind the wait, especially for good food. We understand the challenges of accommodating large dinner crowds with just 2 servers. However, we have dined at several popular and busy restaurants where there is a long wait, and staff always checked-in on us (or at least acknowledged us). No efforts were made here. Poorly run business. Very disappointed. No hard feelings. We took our starving selves and money elsewhere.

I really love this place. The people are lovely, cocktails are spot on, and food is delicious. I've eaten here at least a dozen times and am always wowed by the food and drinks. The new chef has been killing it with creativity and execution, while the bar remains one of the top 3 in the Hudson Valley. Staff is friendly and attentive. Sorry to see a couple negative reviews on service, as I have never had that problem here. Hope those who were not impressed give them a second chance. Ive eaten at many of the top restaurants around the world, and am regularly thankful to have Rock & Rye in my back yard. Go!

My wife and I went here for our wedding anniversary. We were not disappointed. The cocktails were certainly different, but very tasty. Our meals were well prepared and quite delicious. Our server was friendly and attentive. When the owner found out it was our anniversary, she sent us over champagne, which was very thoughtful and nice. We enjoyed it so much, we went back two,weeks later, this time with our daughter. We ate inside the first time, which was very intimate and cozy. The second time we ate outside. It was beautiful out there, and we had another delicious meal. Service remained attentive and thoughtful. The food remained delicious. I had one of the beer specials, which was very good. The food remained locally sourced- the vegetable soup was made with local produce and was perfectly seasoned. All in all, it is a wonderful place to eat, a little off the beaten path, away from Main Street in New Paltz. We plan to go back in June, and take our whole family to celebrate our son's graduation.

If you spend all your time in downtown New Paltz, it is easy to overlook the fact that the village has a lot of history. That becomes more evident if you visit places like Huguenot Street and view the historic homes. Rock and Rye Tavern reflects this as well. It's almost a getaway without actually getting too far away - maybe 1 mile from downtown. The surrounding area is open and serene (near a golf course). The tavern reflects the charm of the nearby historic houses in its decor. And then there's the food and drink! For Spinal Tap fans, their drink menu goes to 11 - pages, that is. The cover bills it as "The best libations around," and I would tend to agree. It was tough to avoid the wine list, the shelf liquors, and the cocktails, but I settled on a beer from one of my favorite breweries, Lake Placid Brewery's Ubu Nitro ($7 for a pint). You can also purchase growlers of some of the beers. Another drink someone ordered, the Smoky Grove, was a gin drink with locally smoked blood oranges, quite unique. Food choices include small plates, appetizers, and full meals, and we had a few of each. One of the appetizer specials this evening, chicken tacos, were unbelievable. I really wish they offered a larger number of the tacos as an entree. The other dinner special was a lamb burger with a mint chutney and fried egg - also tempting, but I eventually settled for their regular burger. The burger was cooked to order, and it came with grilled onions and peppers. I opted for the side salad instead of fries, which came in a deep bowl with a house dressing. The other entree I was considering was the curried fried chicken. I did not order it, but I saw it delivered to another table. It was three huge pieces of fried chicken. We did not order dessert. Their prices are above average, but based on the descriptions, they appear to be generous portions. I need to borrow someone else's hand to give the dessert menu 3 thumbs up. It features 2 local favorites of mine, Harney & Sons tea, and Jane's Ice Cream. It also features my current favorite digestif, which I only discovered about a year ago, Trader Vic's Macadamia Liqueur. For me, Rock and Rye Tavern expands on my options for dining in New Paltz. There's something to be said for the variety of options downtown. There's also something to be said here... usually "Yum!"

Rock an Rye is a welcome cocktail oasis in a desert filled with average bartenders. I have only had the opportunity to dine here once but, being the professional that I am, I was able to partake in four different cocktails, each perfectly crafted by the very knowledgable bartender. The cocktail menu is a mix of old and new recipes from Europe and the U.S. I had a great time working my way through it. Make sure you get there early for dinner and have a drink at the bar then ask to be seated outside. The outdoor patio is screened in so no bugs! The food was very good. I had salmon it was excellent. I watched everything coming out of the kitchen, it all looked so good. I cannot wait to go back, this time by cab, I need to belly up and really dive in this time.

I don't think I've ever written this in hundreds of reviews - the serving was a little bit too small! That says something about how much I LOVED the food at Rock and Rye. First of all, it's mostly locally sourced from New Paltz farms. My duck special was cooked so perfectly. It was incredibly tender, juicy and flavorful. It had just a dollop of mashed sweet potatoes under a bunch of greens, and that tiny dollop was such a tease. I could have eaten an entire dinner plate full of those amazing potatoes. For dessert I had the special popcorn - spicy cinnamon. It burnt my mouth in the best way. I took some of it in a box for the ride home to Albany. Service was excellent. I always had a full water glass. And the beer menu! I didn't realize it was going to be so expensive. The Bell's Brewery Oarmans sour ale was a perfect complement to my dinner. We found the neighborhood and the atmosphere a little bit creepy - but in a good way, if you ask me. We had to drive around in the dark for a bit and they only had the bar area open so the rooms behind us were unlit and pitch black even at 6:30 p.m. I liked the old character of the building. I wish we lived closer to New Paltz so we could go back soon. Maybe next time I'll get a bit more on my plate and I can change this to 5 stars.

My husband and I come here once in a very great while for "date night." We love it!!! The food is always excellent, and a little unique (like rabbit ravioli). The menu is short and sweet, but they change it frequently. Food is always amazing, and you can appreciate the amount of effort and thoughtfulness that goes into it. The drink list is extensive, but every drink is clearly handcrafted, and amazing! Atmosphere is pretty relaxed. Entrees are usually $20-$30, but by the time you add on a drink or two, and some dessert, expect it to be about $60/person.

I was excited to try this restaurant and it was pretty disappointing. The cod was bland and the short rib was just ok. The potatoes had no taste and the spinach just tasted like garlic. The ambiance was great and our waitress was accomodating. The drink list is also huge and I enjoyed my drink even though I think they are pretty overpriced. Everything was nice except the food, won't be going back.

This is a review of the bar; I haven't tried the food. if you fancy some craft cocktails or are interested in "historical" cocktails, then drop into the bar at Rock and Rye. On the drink menu are not only new cocktails but also old ones that list the dates of their inception. Some of the combinations are hard to imagine from just reading the ingredient list and, admittedly, one particular drink wasn't my cup of tea, but it is also an indication of how different the culture of cocktail and spirits is now compared to 50, 60, 70 years ago. Of course, you can always get a gin and tonic, but why not be adventurous and put your trust in the excellent bartenders here?

The first visit was just to the bar. They have a great full bar and specialty cocktails. I enjoyed the Southern Tier IPA and he had several different beers. We also ordered appetizers. I am in love with the sherry and thyme chicken liver bruschetta, grilled baguette, aged balsamic app. The panko breaded portobello steak fries with garlic aioli is a definite favorite. We had six people on the next visit and had made reservations. We were seated immediately and the waitress took the drink orders. This time I tried the cask beer which was fantastic. For dinner I had the Grilled Rainbow Trout with RSK Farms roasted potatoes, Phillies Bridge Farms cucumber salad with dill vinaigrette. Again the food was fantastic and the service great. I finally went back yesterday. We were originally going to Gunk House but they are closed until next week. At Rock and Rye went with the portobello fries, pork sliders, and the artisan cheese plate. Once again everything was absolutely amazing. The owners and staff are a very knowledgeable group of individuals and really understand all aspects of food and drink.

We had dinner here on Tuesday 17 June. We were traveling through the area and most of the restaurants that interested us were closed. Based on yelp and trip advisor, we gave Rock and Rye a try. One of the most mediocre dining experiences ever. The fish of the day had a strange texture for Monk Fish, and my wife's locally sourced chicken was dry and lacking in taste. The blueberry cheesecake prevented total disaster. Service was right in line with the food. Our advice would be to Rock on Bye.

The hostess was extremely accommodating, what was originally a 7:45 reservation was moved up to 7:20 so that the rest of our party would be able to get back on the road at a decent hour. The restaurant transports you back, with its typical Hugenot stonework facade from the 1700's. You are essentially walking into an updated version of what the tavern once was hundreds of years ago; With fireplaces, exposed beams, crown-moulding, and a lovely bar in what I imagine what may have been the old parlour or drawing room at one time. Both dining rooms were full, with diners' faces lit by candlelight in conversation, great surroundings and ambiance. Our service was awesome too, Jackie was gracious and charming, she took great care of us and created one of the best dining experiences we've had in awhile. For the most part, we stuck with water, except for my BF who ordered the Captain Lawrence IPA on draught. The draught and bottled selection is top notch, as is the mixed-drink selection which was undoubtedly dreamt up by a mixologist with an affinity for the prohibition-era classics (think Gin fizz, Gimlets, etc.). For an appetizer we ordered the panko-crusted portobello steak fries, which were enough to satisfy our table of four. psssst--THEY ARE AMAZING! I ordered the pan-seared sea scallops over spaghetti squash with a pumpkin ragout. It was exceptionally delicious. The three scallops were perfectly cooked and seasoned and the whole plate was so well-balanced and creative. The spaghetti squash was such an interesting pairing and made just soupy enough by the pumpkin ragout (what I assume was some broth, oil, and reduced pumpkin pulp and seeds). The few roasted pumpkin seeds to offered a perfect crunch. I cannot say enough how it far surpassed how delicious I thought a scallops dish could ever be. (PS- this is an appetizer, but was just enough food together with the portobello steak fries and complimentary bread). The rest of my table was extremely happy with their dishes as well: Monkfish stew with seasonal veggies, which included fractal/Romanesco cauliflower (this was a special), Pork-belly sliders with a fruit (I want to say pomegranate?) chutney and Acorn squash with leeks, chickpeas and a balsamic drizzle. The latter, I tasted myself and the acorn squash was again, perfectly cooked and both sweet and savory (think: healthiest comfort food ever). Its also nice to note that the majority of the ingredients and meat are locally sourced. This is a farm to table restaurant that really gets it right, the flavors are elegant, service is great, and the ambiance is spirited.

I really want to give this place a whole lot of stars, but they just didn't have their shiz together. Our experience there was a straight up mess. We were sat at the bar to wait 10 minutes for a table and about 60 minutes later several people who entered after us were seated. I guess the host forgot about us? After speaking up we got some menus and placed an order which we realized they forgot AGAIN another hour later. When we spoke up again, the head server or manager told us the roast chicken 'takes a long time'. A REALLY F-ing LONG TIME. Then she came back and told us they had overcooked it and had to start again. So basically we waited about 3 hrs to eat. It seems like they were busy and in over their heads. I can appreciate that, but the BS excuses from the manger were ridiculous and so obviously untrue. The truth would have gone down easier. The saving grace was the very attentive bartender who helped us out as they kept forgetting us and eventually took the entire bar tab off the bill. The drinks were amazing. The food was so-so. None of it is worth being forgotten about twice and waiting three hours.

I've been here twice and loved it. All (or maybe just most of) the meat is locally sourced, grass-fed & free-range. It sits on the outskirts of a golf course in an old, cabin-y sort of building and has a nice patio too--ambiance is great, indoors and out. Great list of cocktails. Great menu. Great service. I want to go here every time I'm in New Paltz.

I go here regularly--it is superb. Thoughtful, inventive, and delicious cuisine. A lovely setting, a rustic charm, with a superb and knowledgable staff, and excellent kitchen. From the burger--moist, succulent--to the weekly and seasonal specials, I have only had terrific meals here. Whether it is a double date or a business dinner, this is the place to bring someone and make a first-class impression. The Rock & Rye Manhattan is simply one of the best cocktails I have ever had. If you like whiskey and like a manhattan, you absolutely must try it. $10, but totally worth it!

This is my second visit here. Last year I gave it 4 stars but this year I left uniformly unimpressed. One of the days "specials" was fried bacon and macaroni & cheese balls. My dinner guest, not a foodie like myself, ordered them. Besides the fact that fried Mac balls can be found on an Applebee's menu and are incredibly passé, there wasn't a speck of bacon to be found. They were not bad, they were just totally uninspired. I had the braised pork belly with grilled peaches on arugula. It was ok, but could have been so much more. And it could have been much more with little effort, For $13.00 it should have been MUCH more. My entree was the tri- tip with chimichuri, fresh tomato salad and mashed potatoes. The tri tip was a bit overdone, though flavorful. The mountain of mashed potatoes, and it was a gargantuan portion, was devoid of flavor. No amount of salt or pepper could inspire that big white blob. My dinner guest had the grilled pork chop with pineapple salsa. She said she liked it, but left it half eaten and declined a box to take the leftovers home. This restaurant is charming, historic and the cocktails, beers and wines are top rate. I wish the food. $120 for 2 diners with no dessert or coffee, and only 1 glass of wine, was worth the price. It wasn't.

We've been to Rock and Rye multiple times over the years for their delicious food, cocktails, and desirable tap beer selection. I felt inspired to finally leave a review on Yelp because we were recently married on their property and held the reception in the pavilion out back. The "grounds" are gorgeous the pavilion is a perfect place to hold a low-key indoor/outdoor reception. Most importantly, the owner, Cassie, and her team were top notch in their service -- as they have always proven to be when we come for dinner in the restaurant. Recommended for dinner, recommended for any special occasion.

Why five stars? 1. Location, location, location. Tucked away just outside the popular village, this place has prime view of the ridge, gorgeous dusk skies, easy access (a couple hundred yards) off the famous Wallkill Vally Rail Trail. The step "off the beaten path" of Main Street was the best step we could have made the day we visited New Paltz. 2. The food. The menu isn't extravagant, but the variety of appetizers and entrees offered is optimal. A kitchen can only do so many things perfectly. How The house-smoked salmon platter was crafted with inspiration and artistically presented. The oven sea bass was so, so fresh, impeccably prepared, roasted to perfection. My partner had the lemon and herb roasted chicken and he loved it. 3. COCKTAILS. Sure, you can get a great cocktail in a lot of restaurants... and you pay a price, which often involves a long wait. The four cocktails we ordered (between two of us), after a brief chats with a "real-deal" kind of bartender, were beyond expectations. Chilled to near ice point, the libations were magic... with no noticeable time waiting. 4. The ambiance. It's an historic old house -- unbelievable seating options: fantastic front porch outside (facing green yards leading to woods), a gorgeous back patio facing the ridge line of the Gunks, inside seating in a formal front room or more cozy main open room with fireplace... of seats at the beautiful large antique bar. 5. The staff. Rock and Rye is not the kind of place where you'll hear anyone say, "hold on and I'll get your waiter." We were served by a couple different people, and when my partner asked a busy member of the wait staff who happened to be passing by for an extra glass of ice, the waiter replied, "sure, right up," and a glass of ice appeared within a minute... brought by yet another server who seemed genuinely happy to be part of the flow. The owner stopped by to ask how we were enjoying everything. This team is easy-going, on-spot professional. We weren't planning to visit New Paltz again this summer, but Rock and Rye is such a find... I can't imagine we wouldn't drive up for an afternoon hike, just to experience another evening at this place.

I enjoyed my meal here. I really liked the old-tavern feel mixed with the more modern (and awesome) music. The food and beverages were extremely satisfying! I had a sweet and soothing Bee's Knees and a Yard Owl Fire Pit Ale, a delicious golden ale. I was really excited about the beer not only because I really enjoyed it, but because it was made locally; I am really excited to look into this brewer more. The waitress was knowledgeable and gave us some more info. And finally, I had their burger, which was on point! I loved that it was on an English muffin; yum!

I have been going to Rock and Rye Tavern for quite some time now, and am finally getting around to reviewing. (Upfront: I do have a friend that works here, but as a self-confessed foodie I am super judgy anywhere!) 95% of the time Rock and Rye is on the mark. Come here especially if you are a fan of cocktails - they are hand-crafted, and there are always beer rarities on tap. Their food specialties revolve around small/large plates of American Fare. Their menu changes seasonally as they use local produce and meat - one of my favorites last summer included fried tomatoes from their own garden! Love the specials during the winter revolving around duck, lamb, etc. Currently, their chefs have been serving up weekly cheesecake specials - I am not a cheesecake fan, but I have to say I have been excitedly waiting each week so i can see what the new one is, they are that good! Prices range from $$-$$$$ depending on what you order, how much, and if you're drinking. There is something for everyone, and they will cater to vegetarians/vegans.

This used to be the Locust Tree, which, in its prime was worth the hour long trip from our home. The setting remains terrific, and we dined in the stone terrace courtyard overlooking the practice green of the adjacent golf course. We were a party of four. The arrival of three $10 martinis in old style champagne glasses, did not get us off to a good start. The brook trout was declared excellent, the steak (ordered medium rare) was undercooked (rare to very rare) but had a well-done chimichurri, and tasty but over-salted mac and cheese. The pasta was flavorful but VERY spicy (although not declared so on the menu), and the chicken the star of the table - fresh, tender and juicy. When faced with cuisine that is hit and miss, particularly on the seasoning, one wonders about the focus and taste buds of the head chef. Dessert was terrific, with French press coffee, and I really liked my Boylan Cane Cola float. Service was attentive, although light on the personal side, despite efforts to engage in dialogue. Overall OK, but not what it used to be...

I've had the pleasure of dining at the Rock and Rye Tavern several times, and I've had a great experience each time. The food was delicious. The mesclun salad with roasted beets and pumpkin seeds was the perfect salad. The roasted half chicken was succulent-cooked to perfection, with tasty grilled corn on the cob as a side. I've also had the pleasure of trying a T-Bone special that was so tender - it was probably one of the best steaks I've had in a very long time. Most of the ingredients are locally sourced, and it shows. The service is excellent, the ambiance is charming, and the cocktails are great too. If you are looking for a great meal in a charming atmosphere, give this place a try. You won't be disappointed. Bon Apetit!

Excellent food and excellent service. Between the server memorizing an extensive specials menu, the food and the atmosphere, this place rules. My boyfriend got duck confit, and I a curried lamb burger; both were wonderful. The mussel appetizer was great, as well. We even made room for dessert (barely) but a banana bread pudding with dulce de leche ice cream, how can I say no? I can't wait to go back, the experience overall was fabulous.

Delicious from start to finish on the screened in porch. We enjoyed a salad with flavorful herbs and the portobello mushroom "fries" to start, followed by bouillabaisse and a bass special. Maybe it was because it was Restaurant Week or a Friday night but between food and service I can't give the place more. Atmosphere was nice though and servers were pleasant, but the long waits were obnoxious. Staff enough people on a busy night. I did have the Restaurant Week dinner and was greatly disappointed. I think they misplaced the seasonings in the kitchen as everything serviced to both myself and my dining companion was bland and boring. Fried chicken was tasteless and overcooked and the broccoli rabe was dry and other than a smoky taste had no flavor. My dining companion picked at food as if it was a mission and not a pleasure to eat it. Even the bread pudding was like a brick. Drinks were made well. I think other than going back for a drink I will pass over this restaurant and go into town.

The cocktail menu is well thought and something you would expect of a master manhattan mixologist. The wait staff is honest and there to please. We ordered a cheese plate and we appreciated that the waitress was honest in describing one of the selection as 'has a funk' which was on point. I had the chicken main course which was a a bit too much on the dry side, but I still enjoyed the dish as my husband did his of the steak special.

Our first visit to Rock and Rye Tavern was nothing but delightful- we arrived at 8:45 and there was a 5-10 minute wait. Our drink order was taken almost right away- which is always good if you have to wait but we ended up being seated even before our drinks came out. The atmosphere of R&R is perfect for New Paltz- an old farmhouse turned into restaurant- low ceilings, exposed beams, original doors, fireplace... I could go on. It's just very New Paltz-y. The food was delicious- our table had two orders of chicken with sage brioche bread pudding and roasted mushroom gravy, an order of fettuccini with local beef and pork, and an order of trout with cucumber/dill salad. Our drinks, ordered from the extensive 'Historic Cocktails' menu were also very good. Our waitress and the bartender who brought us our drinks, were both very friendly and the service was good.

I have eaten here twice now, both times sat at the bar. Always excellent, friendly, informative service. They seem committed to the concept and enjoy what they do. Cocktails are first-rate. Try a boulevardier, a sazarac, a gimlet. Neither me or my dining companions have tried their more elaborate concoctions but I'm sure they are good. All the food we have tried has been excellent. Delicious caesar salad with white anchovies (in Spain these are boquerones, my favorite tapa), roasted local vegetables, other interesting salads and small plates. I had the pulled pork sliders the other day. Not out of this world but very tasty and satisfying. Their home-made pasta is very good. All local meat. Nice wine list, with 25% off bottles on Wednesdays! Yes, a bit pricey but if you order small plates it is reasonable, considering the warm atmosphere, good drinks, and food quality.

MIXED bag - MIXED feelings, hence the middle of the road rating. Food wise, I will have to go with FIVE stars, Value = 3.5 stars. Ambiance = 4 stars. And unfortunately, the most important of all (at least to me), SERVICE = only 2 - 2.5 stars. I dined here for the very first time earlier this evening. My husband and I had actually not even planned for a fine dining experience tonight, it just came on a whim while we were out and about this afternoon. Therefore, I just happened to be somewhat dressed for the occasion, while he did not. However, we figured that our hard- earned greenbacks must surely equal the value of those greenbacks founds in the wallets of some other more well-appointed folks, right? Hmmmm...... after this evening's initial disappointing experience at the Rock and Rye Tavern, one might wonder about that. My husband, an artist and musician, sports long hair and some conspicuous tattoos. I can't help but wonder if perhaps that is why, when there were a few choice tables available in the patio section when we arrived, we were instead seated by the hostess in a cramped table for two next to a young couple with a two year old in close proximity to our table. And by close, I mean CLOSE. Yet, when an older, more distinguished-looking couple came into the patio area, not even 3 minutes after us, they were given one of the more desirable tables (for 4 people, mind you) located in a quaint, quieter corner of the patio. Not only was this other couple offered by the hostess seating in a much more desirable location than the one we were seated at (even though we arrived first), but the waitress proceeded to introduce herself to them first, took their drink order first, informed them of the night's specials first, and delivered their drinks to them - before us - even though we had arrived first and were seated before they ever even entered the restaurant. This kind of oversight makes me very angry. And I'm hoping it was truly just an innocent oversight and not deliberate (or subconscious) discrimination. As my husband and I saw all of this going on, we were getting more and more irritated that we were getting sub-par service. At that point, we should have just got up, went to the bar, paid for our drinks and announced that we had lost our appetite and were not going to dine there after all. But we stayed on because the menu offerings looked so tempting and we were truly feeling rather hungry. Things got a little better after we ordered. At that point, there were three different women waiting on us- a little confusing. I got the impression that their service system was rather unorganized and that several different staff members began pitching in to help out in an effort to keep things flowing. But their system certainly needs refinement to say the least. Our food was indeed scrumptious, though. Like I said earlier- 5 stars. The pork belly dish and Vadalia Onion bisque appetizers were outstanding. The Polenta vegan dish and Monk fish entree were also both fabulous. Our dessert special, the seasonal strawberry shortcake, featuring a flaky home-made biscuit & whipped cream was super savory. However, the value of every dish rates a tad on the lower side. Portions, while acceptable, certainly could have been a little more generous. The monk fish portion was extremely meager. Sadly, I won't return because I never recover from being treated like a second-rate patron. My greenbacks are printed at the same Federal institution as the next guys and it shouldn't matter what I or anyone in my dining party look like as long as we have the cash to pay the tab and conduct ourselves in a professional, pleasant manner.

My steak was under cooked and instead of a total refire on a SLICED steak they refried it sliced which to me is horrible. Either do not slice it or refire a new steak. For the price I paid for it this is ridiculous. They Drinks were fantastic but not discount for the mistake...as a cook I understand wanting to push out refires and as a grill cook meat can be temperamental but honestly I will never return even if I go back to NY unless it is just for drinks...unless they gave me the beautiful antique bourbon dispenser

I was so so so excited to come here. The reviews were so good, the menu looked so fun, and by the pics it looks like such a hidden gem of the hudson valley. I was so dissapointed. The food itself was good.. solid flavor. My polenta fries were tasty, and everything else was average, and yes the drinks are great! Entrees overpriced... It was a Thursday night and we did get there at 815 but for a restaurant which says its open till 10 should still be on their game. THEY WEREN'T. When we walked in it felt awkward like we were a huge surprise. No friendly greeting whatsoever. We sat in the tavernish area, it was quaint, and had nice touches of authenticity all around. I love the whole atmosphere. . We were excited to order, when he said they ran out of the pork belly... (they only serve dinner from 5 to 10 and at 830 no more pork belly.?). well ok then we'll have scallops, "i'm sorry we ran out of them too. Come on! :( ! . The worst was when our bill came the waiter jacked up the prices of a couple of things! crazy.. we just took it out of the tip, wasn't even worth the hassle of saying something. I feel like it may be a local spot, which is great but at least be inviting. I would have loved to become a regular if everything was a lot more enjoyable.

Great hidden gem in New Paltz. Food is farm to table! Very fresh and creative. LOVE their specials and they seem to always be coming up with something too. Great dessert too. Make reservations before you venture out--they are always packed!

Decided to give Rock and Rye a try and we were very pleasantly surprised. We used to come here when it was the Locust Tree Inn. The cocktail list was innovative and the cocktails themselves delightful. Both wines we ordered by the glass also excellent. The food was splendidly prepared and from local sources (except obviously the salmon) The roast chicken was tender and nicely spiced and the sockeye salmon had a great sauce. We had the cheese platter and then chocolate mousse for dessert. We were delighted to find they served whole leaf tea- a rarity in this area. Loved the ambiance of the historic home it is housed in and especially enjoyed eating outside on a lovely evening overlooking golf course and Gunks. Would like to see better quality bread served with dinner to match the level of the other food served. Also a bit more cheese on that cheese platter. Service was a bit slow but everyone who helped us was great. Because we were enjoying being outside and were not in any hurry we didn't mind this, but could see how others might find this a problem. We will definitely be back this summer. Great place!!

I ate the Rock & Rye Tavern after a nice day hiking at the Mohonk Preserve. I arranged a 5:00 dinner by reservation which they had when I arrived. There was a wedding going on and they brought to another room by the front door.. The first thing I noticed is the rug in the room is absolutely fitly and it's so dirty that it needs to be replaced. The staff was friendly and suggested appetizers and a beer selection which was quite good and the venison appetizer was excellent. As for dinner, my wife selected the striped bass and I had the seafood stew. The seafood stew would have benefited from some clams or a piece of fish but did have razor clams and craw-fish. The stripped bass was tasty and could have been cooked skin side down to make it crispier but was good. The dessert was extremely good as they provided each of us a coffee press which went well with the bread pudding that we had. Additionally, on the outside of the restaurant a tree branch was down in the sitting area and that should been cleaned up as well as it was an eyesore. Nice place but our dinner ran about 125.00 with tip so be prepared as it isn't cheap but a good choice over the Gilded Otter which most people go to in New Paltz when visiting.

Let me start off by saying that I spent way more money then I expected to last night at Rock and Rye. But the meal was so amazing that I don't even care! (Plus they use a lot of meat and vegetables from local farms.) The drink menu is quite extensive. The cocktail that I ordered was lovely. My companions loved the Founders Red Ale and ordered quite a few of them. The food really stole the show. We started our meal with the breaded portobello fries and mussels. They were both AMAZING. We were licking our plates to get every last drop of the garlicy buttery sauce that the mussels were in. For entrees we ordered the steak, the fish special (snapper), and the scallops. The snapper and scallops were perfect. The steak was a bit rare (was ordered medium rare) but my dinning companion still managed to eat the whole thing without a complaint. The mac and cheese that came with the steak was perfectly decadent. We ordered a flourless chocolate cake for dessert. It came with peanut butter and jelly. The cake was a bit dry but not bad. The meal was so lovely that nobody seemed to mind.

I really love this place. I've been here over a dozen times and the food is consistent, tasty and local. You can sit outside in a great garden setting in the middle of the summer and dine on a steak from cows up the street, or sit inside next to the fire in the winter and have a great burger made from local beef. Sometimes I will just get a couple small plates (mussels, sliders, pork belly) and a few beers for my whole meal. Excellent cocktail list, second to none. Great beers on tap too.

Went tonight with about 12 ladies. Server was ok at first, but then it got worse. I ordered squash soup. It was warm. It was served in a huge bowl, and about and inch and a half of soup in the bowl. Taste was ok. Drizzle of oil on soup-not a good idea. Added nothing to the flavor. Dinner-4 of us got skirt steak special. Steak was served ICE cold. They took it back, apologized and offered to take money off because it took at least 30 more minutes to get the meal back. Two people got seafood "stew". There was about 5 pieces of seafood in it. They asked for more, the only brought one guest more in their bowl. Bill came. I had a deduction on my steak, as did my friend. The other 2 ladies did not-theirs was full price!!! Finally manager comes out after the waiter had given up trying to understand things. The manager said he would take our checks and add the money back in to fix it!!! Really? Cold meal, got served after all the others were served and had eaten?! It was a mess. The "manager" Matt was not friendly at all. He didn't apologize for what his chef did or didn't do. Would I go back? Never....not if it were free. Save yourself and pick another great place in New Paltz to go to!!!

What an adorably amazing little place! I went here while on a road trip from Brooklyn to New Paltz. I was with three others from the city, and three other from Hudson Valley area. They don't open until 5:00pm, and we got there at about 5:15pm; all the outdoor tables that could seat seven were spoken for, so we sat inside -- had a marvelous time nonetheless. I would suggest reservations, especially if you want to sit outside because this great place gets packed! The drink menu is intricate and spectacular. A few people I was with had the PIMMS Cup, which are both tasty and refreshing. The food was over-the-top amazing. As a vegetarian leaving Brooklyn usually means limited options, but Rock and Rye had so many options. I highly, highly, highly suggest you get the portobello fries -- they're OUTSTANDING! With seven people, endless drinks, a shit ton of amazingly delicious food and a generous tip (well deserved) our bill was only like $60 a person. Totally a great value! If you're in New Paltz, even for a few hours, GO HERE!

Rock and Rye is really a New Paltz gem. The building feels like a little Hudson Valley oasis, and sitting on the porch over a candlelit dinner is a truly special experience. The staff who work at the restaurant are young and passionate about what they do, and they know a lot about food and cocktails. The menu is often shifting, and there are always a few dishes which do a great job of highlighting local ingredients. The menu could be a little bit simpler and there could be a few more vegetarian dishes, but it is clear that the staff there are always working to make improvements. Overall, this is just a fantastic place which offers a truly special experience.

Blossoms were ok but they weren't filled with anything. A little cheese inside wouldn've helped. The nice large scallops were pan seared but still raw and cool in the middle. My son said "look its like jello!" Needed 3 minutes in the oven after being seared. My wife ordered the halibut. Great choice! Fish was seared very nicely and the meat was nice and flaky. I ordered the 32 oz. porterhouse steak special. I was very hesitant about ordering this amount of meat but decided to share it with my son. The steak came out and it was no way 32 oz. It was TOPS 20 oz. precook weight. I've been eating and grilling steaks for years! This wasn't even close. VERY DISAPPOINTING because deceiving the public is very bad. It was ok could not tell if it was farm raised beef or from the store. We continued to try the coffee and dessert. I'm not a big fan of desserts but when I saw Janes ice cream on there, I was all in! Then to have french press coffee just put a nice touch it. Not a good sign for a place when the ice cream and coffee is better than the entree. Rock and Rye Tavern, I hope you listen to your customers! Throughout the night the service was ok. The girl looked nervous and could tell she was there because college was done. A step up from wearing black jeans and black sneakers and not playing with her hair would've been nice. Certain people are meant to be servers she wasn't. Harsh but its constructive criticism.

Rock and Rye is wonderful. The food is good, the drinks are perfectly crafted and the service is warm and knowledgeable. The house/barn the restaurant is housed in was beautifully restored which creates great ambiance. I can't wait to eat here again!

I really enjoyed my meal here. I had the $30 prix fixe menu, which, considering that I came in famished, I was sporting quite a food baby when I left. I started with the goat cheese salad which was lovely and a nice portion. Next was the skirt steak with asparagus and a baked potato WHICH WAS AMAZING. The steak was very good, though a little salty (coming from someone who is a big fan of salt). The dessert course was a kind of bread pudding soaked in rum I think? I thought it was a very good value. I loved the atmosphere and they had a nice beer and wine selection. Also had a few bites of Date's mac & cheese with ham hock...holy hell. All the more reason to come back!

This place is fabulous. I have been here about 6 times already and can't wait to go back. The staff is super friendly and very knowledgable. Everything is from local farmers which is great. The drink menu has a great variety. The gimlets & honey badgers are delicious. You must try the rock and rye burger. It's juicy and perfect. The steak is also delicious. Actually everything I've had there has been amazing. The carrot cake is must have. Please go and see for yourself. Don't miss out.
