Super-yummy cheap eats selection. Generous super combination w/ 3 soft tacos & an an order of rice and beans came out to 9.20. Satisfied a hankering for soft tacos pretty fast; their pork soft taco was DELISH, complete with meaty juices dribbling down my hand as I ate it (which is slightly messy, but I like slightly messy when it's yummy). I have to make sure I don't gorge from this place, but it's tempting.

I recently came back to El Caf after a brief hiatus and it still remains my favorite Mexican spot to goto in all five boroughs. It's that damn good! Knowing that I would probably be hurting the next day from going out at night, I ordered the chorizo nachos to combat a future hangover. The nachos are ill and because I'm a savage, I ended up eating some of them during a drunken arrival home, the next morning for a nacho breakfast and again at night. They give you a LOT of nachos and they taste just as good (if not better) reheated. The Cubana Torta will have people acting like Swizz Beatz saying "you think you fancy huh" while you eat it. Imagine a torta with four different kinds of meat, bigger than your hand and after eating half of it, you are full. For $7.95 that luxury could be all yours. They have streamlined their menu a bit compared to the one they used to have, but you can order any Mexican dish and they will make it for you. I was hesitant to write a review as I think this a spot that not many know about, but after seeing a few Astoria restaurants close due to lack of support...I don't want to see the same fate happen to El Caf.

I've been eating in and ordering delivery for over a year from this place, and I'm starting to wonder why. The food is reasonably good but there are other places in Astoria with good Mexican food (check out Tulcingo or La Cabana), and much cheaper, and with much better service. So yeah I guess that sums it up, sloooooow service and too expensive for otherwise decent food.

Review is way over due! This authentic Mexican spot is right around the corner and it really is SO good.. Been here more than a handful of times... Obsessed with nachos! Must get them with the chicken and the beef... The tacos are also delicious topped off with onions and cilantro..first time ordering breakfast (western omelette)... And it was perfectly made. Comes with home fries, toast, coffee--all for $7.95.... You can't beat that!

Absolutely delicious. I love the food. Chill atmosphere. the reasonable price more than makes it worth your while.

AMAZING AND DELICIOUS food. Good price and fast delivery. Nothing more to say.

Poor staff, bad customer service

I am a Mexican-American born and raised in California, so since moving to NYC years ago I've been on a search for half-way decent Mexican food to no avail. Then after living in the same apartment in Astoria for 4 years, I found El Cafetal right around the corner from my place! It was right under my nose this whole time! Anyway, the food is AUTHENTIC Mexican food. No shredded cheese. No Tex-Mex. No Californiafied-Mexican. The food is delicious and portions are generous. I have never been disappointed in a dish I've ordered from there, but I love the tacos al pastor the best. If you've ever been to the place, you'll know it's a hole-in-the-wall. The ambiance and the decor are not the reasons to go here. You go for the food. I've ordered delivery and yes it does take a while. It's because they're making your food to order and it's well-worth the wait. Mostly, I do carry out and call ahead the minute I get above ground on the N. I've never done Seamless ordering, but speaking with the staff, I wouldn't. They only take cash, so I don't understand why they'd do Seamless. Nevertheless, they're a small, but dedicated staff. Granted, I speak Spanish, so I don't have to worry about communication barriers. My suggestion to non-Spanish speakers, if you're ever in the area eat-in or do carry out (communication in broken Spanish/English is easier in person).

Food is good but omg I waited nearly 2 hours for a delivery of tacos and I live half a block away!!! Terrible service.

When you put together the price, the quality of ingredients (fresh!) and the amount of care they put into the preparation of each dish regardless of what you order, what you get is one hell of a delicious and fully satisfying meal. Satisfaction on all fronts is difficult to achieve and although you can't expect black tie service from a place like this, it's all about their effort here. They certainly aim to please. Everyone's heard "don't judge a book by its cover" and this is certainly one of those places. The windows are covered with menus and pictures and makes it a little difficult to see in, couple this with the occasionally uninviting loiterers out front, small footprint and unassuming signs and you can easily skip right over it. It's located conveniently at the base of the stairs to the Astoria Blvd stop and is definitely worth stopping off at before hitting up after work on the way home (or if you don't live in the area and are just heading to the airport before catching the LGA bus). Even basic things like the burritos and tacos are prepared with the freshest cut avocado, generous wedges of lime and plated nicely. Make sure you get the guacamole here too, it's just that good.

I ordered take out and got the vegetable tacos. Perhaps it was my lapse in judgement, but I thought they were going to be beef tacos with vegetables on the side. It wasn't until I was halfway eating the second vegetable taco did I realize there was no beef. I guess that's a good sign if it took me that long to realize. The rice and beans on the side were nothing special. The green sauce that came with the meal tasted so strange. I will give this place another try, possibly actually ordering beef tacos. Location is close to the train station. However, the wait for my food was quite long.

I always stop here to grab a quick dinner after work. The proportions of their tacos are bigger then other places I've been to, they always give me three tacos, and I can NEVER finish it, which is a plus, because it's shareable. I decided to give the last one to my brother the other night when I got home, and I really thought he wouldn't like it (because he never likes anything) but he surprisingly loved it.

When I lived on 30th Ave., I frequently ordered Yummy Taco, so I was bummed when I moved to Ditmars, where the only good Mexican food was from Mojave - delicious, but expensive. I was on Seamless one day and stumbled upon El Cafetal and decided to give them a go, and now they're a go-to option when I'm craving delivery. My favorite dish is their cheese quesadilla. Trust me, it's more exciting than it sounds. The tortillas are fresh and delicious, and drizzled in crema, sprinkled with cotija cheese, and topped with slices of avocado. How is that not something to love? I've also had the guacamole and house-made tortilla chips, which are fantastic. The lime-y flavor of the guac is my favorite. Oh, and let's not forget their tostadas. Also a hit. My fiance likes their burritos, but I try not to let him have them because they are massive (great value, but probably not great for you).

I was here last week. The food was just ok although the servings were big... The service was slow even though we were the only people in the restaurant. I've experienced better. Sorry El Cafetal.

The Mexican food we all crave at my work place! These guys have gone out of their way to deliver to us and always more than enough sauces and extras! Their red chilaquiles are devilishly good, chicken is flavorful and their guacamole and chops are legit. Heard their shrimp soup and burritos are good too!

Just ordered take out from seamless. After waiting 45 mins for them to deliver my burrito. I went to my confirmation email and called them- the phone just rang and rang. Then I check on their website and it was a completely different phone number. I called them asked what the hold up was and tried to explain how they had the wrong number on their seamless account. The women said you have a differnt number okay what is it?! I said is there anyone that speaks English she said no - an hour it took - a kid comes to the door and I explained to him my frustration he said he just delivers the food - I then thought I should tip him because like he said he just delivers and he didn't have change of a 20 and proceed to charge me for my meal when I had already paid for it through seamless. Horrible customer service! They don't know any English! Sorry I'm hungry and ordered an hour ago for one single mean when your less than a mile away!

We took advantage of their special 'sandwiches' and ordered a breakfast burrito: scrambled eggs, beans, cheese and bacon [you can choose ham too]. It comes with a free coffee. LESS THAN FOUR DOLLARS A PIECE. It's like a LARGE microwave burrito in size, but it's like your Mexican friend's mother's cooking before you run off to school in flavor... Why three stars? Not a spectacular looking place. While the waitress smiled enough, there's a Mexican restaurant phenomenon seen in too many NY locales. They'll have a friend there and they'll treat the friend like royalty and they look at you like you don't belong. Seriously MEXICANS! IF YOU MAKE US FEEL WELCOME, WE'LL WANT TO COME BACK. Mexicanos! Tratenos bien...de esa manera, nos sentimos comodos, y estamos resueltos a volver de nuevo!!!!

I really wanted to give this place a 5 star rating because literally, the food made me wanna beat up every Mexican friend I have for not cooking me shit like this. However, there's a problem. 1.) Nobody here speaks a lick of English. 2.) They take FOREEEEEEVER to deliver. We ordered through seamless and had to call seamless to try to get our food delivered. 1 and 1/2 hours later, and after seamless had already refunded our money, the most amazing food I've put in my mouth in quite some time was delivered. Myself and two others basked in the glory of super cheesy, way too unhealthy, amazing tastiness until there wasn't a crumb to be seen. My opinion, eat in the place it's right by the train.

I decided to order food from here on Saturday because 1) It was Cinco De Mayo and I wanted to be festive, 2) A friend recommended it, and 3) It was the only Mexican place on seamless that delivered. I ordered the Mole Enchiladas ($13) It took nearly 50 minutes to arrive which sucked, but I can look past that since it was Cinco De Mayo, and I'm sure they were slammed. Once it arrived, I was shocked at how heavy the bag was. Inside were two containers of food: One with the enchiladas, the other was the side of rice and beans. All in all, there were probably three meals worth of food in the bag. $13 for chicken mole enchiladas ain't bad to begin with, but considering the amount of food, it was a downright bargain. I originate from Denver, so I can be particular about my Mexican (and so far NYC is a big ole let down). The Enchiladas was swimming in sauce (awesome), drizzled with sour cream, sprinkled with authentic Mexican cheese, and had beautifully slices avocados decorating the top. Things were looking up, and I was starving from waiting so damn long for it to get there so I dug in. Lord, what did I do to deserve this kind of punishment? The meat was grisly, fatty, and unidentifiable as chicken. Mole is my favorite sauce out there and is really tough to get right. I've tasted Moles that ran the spectrum from mediocre to award worthy, but this stuff was straight up nasty. Who knows what the hell they were thinking when they put it together. I took about three or four bites, and then tossed the container in the garbage. I ended up eating the rice and beans as my dinner, which was fine, but c'mon, my 5 year old nephew could make rice and beans taste good. I may try to order something a little less challenging from this place another time as there was some promise there and my recommendation came from someone who knows what they are talking about.

Don't ever order from El Cafetal. I placed my order online. Not only did they fail to deliver it, but I got the run-around on the phone several times - none of their explanations made sense, the woman I spoke with hung up on me, and I'm not sure that I'll be able to get my money back. This is the second time they've botched my delivery - and apparently I'm not the only one. I should have read Seamless Web's user reviews before I ordered.

This is my second choice local Mexican delivery place. The food is good and inexpensive. And it is right off of the Astoria Blvd N train stop. Delivery is free and beers are $4. I'm a big fan of the Tamales, which aren't on the menu, so ask which ones they have that day. Usually it's chicken with either red or green sauce. Personally, I think their nachos have too much lettuce. I mean, who puts lettuce in nachos? But their burritos and tacos and ilk are better than your average "Chinese run Mexican Place." That's right, I am talking to you, Fresca Tortilla.

My go to Mexican delivery place. Chorizo anything FTW. Also love their spicy pork and tacos.

I have decided that i like this place. It's been a struggle trying to find cheap, straight-foward, mexican food ever since i moved to New York from Oakland. It needs to be cheap, tacos need to have cilantro, and onions and some hot sauce. That is what i define tacos as. This place definitely does it, and the $7.00 3-taco special with your choice of meat w/ rice and beans is good. My only problem is their meat. It's a little iffy. Last night i ordered quesadillas, and the tortillas were so doughy and soft. I couldn't stop shovelling it into my mouth. Plus, they're right around the corner from my apartment. Astoria definitely lacks mexican food, and this is probably the only place i'll be going to.
(3)Penelope S.
they take forever to deliver. no good. overall descent. delicious fish i think it was the tilapia dish. fresh. generous amount of chips given. the chicken quesadilla was meaty and cheesey . overall good compared to any other shit hole mexican restaurants around astoria. best bet is jackson heights.
(3)Chita D.
It's still a good solid 4 stars...but with my new discovery of El Rey del Sabor, this place is no longer my #1. I'd still go get my grub on when visiting my beloved Astoria...buuut, for now I shall continue my love affair with El Rey.
(4)Dayris F.
I simply LOVE this place! I mean I have never been to mexico but something tells it does not get any better than this. My only issue is that the food takes a long time to make but I guess thats a good thing anyways. :)
(4)Sara S.
this is my JOINT. right across the street from my apartment + right under the subway means it's cured the drunk munchies for me wayyy too many times. the tortas, sopes, and huaraches are all dope. and the waitresses are really sweet. it's hard to go wrong here. BUT it's all about the chorizo nachos. gigantic and overflowing with all dat good sloppy shiz. once i was sitting by myself eating them at like midnight on a thursday (yes, drunk munchies strike again) and a fellow patron asked if he could take a picture of me. i think cuz he was laughing at me. (i let him.)

If you are looking for authentic, cheap Mexican food this is the perfect spot. Great tacos, with a wide range of filings (salt pork is my favorite). Not a ton of vegetarian options, but the gorditas regulares are a good choice. The guacamole is made to order, huge, and delicious. The atmosphere is laid back, with a sweet jukebox, guys drinking beer at the tiny bar, families with little kids, and the occasional waitress who doesn't speak English. Takeout and delivery are also available. Rosa Mexicana this is not (that's a good thing)!
