Many moons ago, I made my first trip to NYC. It was spring break of my freshmen year of college, and I decided I was taking myself to NYC. I spent ten quality hours with Amtrak, and I got off at Penn Station. After asking some nice man, "How do I get to the uptown platform from this downtown one?" I made it onto the 1 and went to the hostel at 103rd and Amsterdam. Starved, I entered Maria's for my first ever NYC pizza experience. The special was $5 for two slices of pizza and a can of soda (of which the only option was coke. Mind you, I had to ask for every soda they had before finally finding out they only had coke.) As the years pass on, I've stopped back in on rare occasion for nostalgic reasons. The pizza is true NYC pizza. Thin, fresh, and delicious. In a city where there is amazing pizza everywhere, Maria's doesn't stand out, but it's still good. It is a great place for your first NYC pizza if you are staying in the hostel. Plus, it's way cheaper than Sal & Carmine's over a block, though not as prolific.

Pizza was not that bad - the crust was a little bit hard, but I did enjoy the Hawaiian pizza...a lot of pineapples and for $6.00, I got a slice of cheese and a slice of Hawaiian, plus a can of soda. The sauce was delicious, the crust, again, was a bit on the harder side...but it was definitely better than the pizza you'd get at Times Square!
