Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

After hearing many good things about Kura Barn, I decided to give it a shot.. and was not disappointed. The restaurant is in what was once a house, the interior definitely has Japanese flair with a sushi bar near the entrance. Going at 7pm on a Sunday night, the place was empty (they may have been trying to close). Either way, our waiter was great. We tried the calamari and chicken string bean appetizers, both good. Of the rolls we sampled the Crunchy and Mexican were the best.

I'm a huge Sushi fan, and go out for sushi at least once-twice every two weeks. I've been coming to Kura Barn for over 10 years, and each time I've left I enjoy it each time. Inside: The place is small, but warm and cozy. It's build out of what was probably once a house, and you can feel that vibe. Its a warm, family atmosphere. Authentic Japanese decor which I like and its always clean. Food: One word comes to mind- fresh. Look, their sushi is basic and you're not going to find the huge big fancy rolls you'll find at other places. But their food is so fresh, and a classic taste that always brings me back. I love their appetizers also and they have kitchen dishes if you go with someone who dosen't like the raw fish. I recommend / I've had: Salad w/ ginger dressing Miso soup Soba Soup Edaname Negamaki Calamari Any kind of Shashimi Mexican roll, rainbow rolls, spider rolls, spicy tuna/salmon, Norwegian, etc Price: For Sushi, not too bad. Its not by any means cheap, though. I highly recommend going here if you're in the Huntington area. Anticipate a classic, tasty, traditional meal.

This seems like the best traditional japanese sushi place I have found so far in Long Island. Maguro Description: shiny and seems very supermarket like. doesnt have good consistency Freshness: 5 Texture: 5 Taste: 5 Overall: 5 Tamago Description: good color, good texture, a lil bit too sweet. Slightly firm slightly pale yellow. most likely made today. good Freshness: 7 Texture: 7 Taste: 8 Overall: 7.3 Restaurant Overall: 3.4 Other Notes: Toro Description: a little bit dry and hard. Doesnt seem to be fresh. rice seems to have soaked in too much water. lacked taste Unagi Description: pretty good, good consistency. a lil strong on the sauce Anago Description: soft, seems overcooked. but decent.

This place is amazing! Have been coming here for over 15 years. When my husband and I moved to FL we really missed coming here, but now that we are back we will be regulars again! The food is consistently delicious! My husband prefers the cooked and I love the sushi...win win for us! The owners are the best and make you feel like family!

This is my go to spot for Japanese in Huntington. Being a Vegan I love that they have tons of vegetable appetizers and each one has always been nothing short of delicious. The fact that the restaurant is situated in house always made it feel cozy and warm. Service has been nothing short of excellent - always! I've had sushi rolls (veggie), seaweed salad both black and green variety, soups, spring rolls, veggie stir fry, udon noodle soups... you name it, if it is veggie I have had it here. Always fresh, always yummy and always accommodating. Hands down a solid 5 star experience every time. And I always bow to the real Japanese Sushi Chefs when I leave.

I will 5-star KB every single time I go there. It continues to deliver great sushi into ma belly. So simple. I'm always shocked when I'm done with my meal. I ate my face off, yet I don't feel like a gluttonous slob. Fresh sushi will have that effect on you. Similar order this time around... salad (without the neon ginger dressing like other places), tuna maki-maki, shrimp summer roll and a scallop roll. Each item was light and delicious. Watch out for the sake menu if your a rookie. I ordered a bottle of unfiltered sake (anyone who was at Miraku Elite Event will understand this) and it was a bit different than what I had previously. Not bad. Just different.

The service is excellent, The staff is very attentive and cheerful,The sushi is oishii-ne, the price is reasonable, and the ambiance has a sufficiently traditional feel. I am sorry I didn't come here sooner. I really like it here, and I will definitely come back again many times!

After our visit to Kura Barn tonight I question those reviewers that tell us that this place is great. Actually it's beat and should gracefully fade away into the sunset..the sushi bar is at the entrance and virtually non existent. The fish cooler was dark so eyeballing the fish was virtually impossible...not a good thing. The sushi is not excellent and with the lack of traffic not as fresh and vibrant as other places. As a comparison, we recently visited Yuki's Palatte in Merrick and were overwhelmed at the freshness, cut and presentation of the sushi and sashimi. The staff is affable but if your going for a sushi fix, KB is not where you want to go.

The Kura Barn is a landmark in Huntington, NY for Japanese food that has endured since the 1970's when it was just one of a few Sushi bars on LI. Its endearing legacy and legions of followers have been built up the simple basis of supremely fresh food, professional handling, and very good service. I am partial to going there solo to hang out at the sushi bar and supervise the chefs while they show me the perfection of their art. One can let the chef pick your dinner too and that command is "Omakase" , which literally means in Japanese "to entrust". I have done this few times to ferret out interesting dishes the chef is experimenting with and he just needed a willing subject. Beyond the flavor of the moment, Kura Barn offers what has become traditional in every sushi bar on LI, as if they were students, and one can get the Yoba noodles, the Tempura, and grilled fish too. Almost every seating I have had comes with a fancy booklet of sake choices, a menu, and another fancy booklet of special high gloss pictures of their newest creations. The only slight drawback I can see to Kura Barn is that is a little more expensive than the average place, but once that is accepted, everything is cool as this place bleeds more quality in it's quiet manner than all of the Japanese or "Asian fusion" pretender restaurants in Huntington combined.

Who knew there are places like these in long island? Very authentic feel and the sushi is very fresh. Came here with my mom who's not familiar with Japanese food and even she enjoyed it very much. The little picture book of appetizers was helpful and had many delicious options. We tried the scallops dish and the tuna tartar dish and both were amazing. We also had their eel roll and their tsunami roll. We tried other rolls which I cant remember now but one of them had soft shell crab in it, which I have to say wasn't the best. But everything else was super delicious. The atmosphere is just right as well, serene but lively. The wait staff is pleasant. The wait for the food was a bit longer than I'd like but it was well worth it.

Kura Barn is the best Sushi restaurant in Huntington, and maybe even New York. I've never had to wait more than 5 minutes for a table (granted I never go during busy times) and have always had courteous servers. I usually get the miso soup or hijiki (seaweed and tofu cooked with soy sauce) depending on my mood. Try hijiki if you're feeling a bit adventurous - it has a scrumptious sweet/sour taste that you won't expect. The sushi menu may not be as extensive as other places, but I've never had a bad roll here. Staples such as the eel roll, spicy/crunchy and california always hit the spot, but they have some creative selections that are sure to please - like the BLT (bacon, lettuce, tuna), Indian Roll (with curry sauce -HIGHLY recommended) and Mexican Roll. The interior is homey and non-pretentious like some of the other kitschy sushi places you'll find in Huntington.

I may be a bit biased as I've been coming here all my life, but I've also had Japanese food all over the country and in Japan. This place is one of if not the best on Long Island when it comes to Japanese food, there is nothing on the menu that I haven't had and nothing that hasn't been great. Food is always fresh, staff is always quick and courteous, you really can't beat Kura Barn if you're looking for a quiet and more traditional restaurant.

I've eaten here SEVERAL times, and it's always fantastic. A little on the pricey side, but absolutely worth it. They have traditional Japanese style sushi, even hard to find items like Otoro & Abalone. They also have American style rolls for those of you who prefer that. The fish is always fresh & well prepared. The sushi chefs are actually Japanese, which is always a bonus :) The traditional kitchen dishes like Sukiyaki & Tonkatsu are also fantastic.
(4)Rian T.
Quite possibly the best sushi I have ever had. I can't think of any reason not to give this establishment 5 stars. Extremely hospitable service- was greeted with a hearty " arrigato" as soon as I walked in. The decor seemed very authentic and the food was phenomenal.

Nice restaurant. Promised someone very special a sushi dinner and decided we should try somewhere we've never been before. At first I drove right by it, for some reason I thought it would be closer to Downtown Huntington near the 15 other Japanese/Asian Fusion places. I must say we really liked this place. Noemi's pork katsu was very nice and light, and the sushi for two was great as well, very good deal. Lots of good drinks and Sapporo on tap which sealed the deal for me. Very good service, friendly staff and a very quiet and homey atmosphere. We'll definitely be back!

Just really great, fresh and well prepared Japanese food. Great atmosphere and friendly staff.

My favorite Japanese food restaurant in the area. Great vegetarian options! Authentic food, great service, and friendly staff! I looove Kura Barn!
(5)Meron L.
Passed by this place a million times on the way to or from Huntington Village. Finally gave it a shot and glad I did. Probably the best Beef Negamaki I've ever had, and also top quality sushi. Excellent service and great ambiance. Highly recommended.
(5)Cait C.
this place does not do the trick. the miso soup tastes like water. the ratio of rice to fish in the rolls is unacceptable. the sashimi fish had chewy strings of fat that hadn't been trimmed out. overall disappointing experience and the prices are not at all reasonable for the low caliber of food.

I've been a fan since 1983 l love the food the warmth and the welcome every time I step foot in this family owed restaurant. That you all for your excellence for the love of what you all do! Donna P.

You know you are in a good Japanese restaurant when you walk in and 3/4's of the people eating are Japanese. The service is outstanding. The food is innovative and delicious. I have honestly not had such good Japanese food in a very long time. One more benefit- it is one of the very few restaurants in Huntington with its own parking lot!
(5)Melissa P.
Seated immediately for a party of three during dinner time. Interior of restaurant is very large with traditional decoration. Large selection of beer and wine, can't suggest the plum wine - very sweet. Ordered the teppan chicken which came with a large bed of vegetables. Was my first time trying the dish, I enjoyed the preparation of the chicken itself though I skipped the vegetables. My companions ordered the chicken tempura and an assortment of sushi. Each person seemed pleased with his or her meal. Service was quick, no complaints.
(4)Claire K.
I always get sushi here when I'm in town and the food is always amazing, fresh and customer service is great! Love this little gem!
(4)Mishi C.
Cute place. Hand roll was yummy. Their miso soup was yummy. Dessert was okay. Not a huge fan of the raw beef though.
(3)Kari T.
The service and ambiance at this popular Huntington spot are excellent. However the food here is well below average. The pork gyoza looked good, but had gritty bits. Vegetable gyoza are better. Ginger carrot salad dressing was unpleasantly acidic. Teriyaki chicken was flavorless and served with cold steamed vegetables. The seafood teriyaki was also bland and greasy and the scallops had an odd aftertaste. The avocado sushi was warm and the avocado was overripe. Disappointing.
(2)April Y.
Ah place is going downhill I found the ginger dressing to be acidic and sushi had a smell to it miso soup was good. My mom found her chicken teriyaki to be crunchy and undercooked. The sushi meals are pricey then it used to be. Stick with Aki lot of food
(2)Melanie R.
Let's start off with the waiter brushed is off the whole time gave us the food and at the end didn't even ask if we wanted dessert she just gave us the check. She never bothered asking us how the food was. Now the food is not fresh! The California roll was more of an alvacado roll no crab meat! Samon sushi was AWFUL was not fresh! Don't bother if you want to have good food just get dressed and go further up to Tings!
(2)Jeff R.
Quaint spot with Great Sushi & Service. Great date spot.
(5)Alan W.
Let me start by saying i am not a sushi person so my review is based upon the food i ate there and not the sushi. Went there for dinner last night with wife and daughter. I had the chicken teriyaki, miso soup and a salad. The food was good, But nothing special. The service was good and the waitress was friendly and efficient. Prices were ok a little on the higher side. For me i would say I would not go there again as there were much better places for chicken teriyaki.
(3)Reisa B.
Kurabarn always has and will continue to be the best Japanese food I have ever had. I have been going there for over ten years and have NEVER left there disappointed. The prices are reasonable the staff is friendly, timely, and knowledgable. I even love the sprouts they bring as an appetizer and often asked for a container of them to bring home. Definitely start with the tofu avocado salad!! Love love love love love this place.
(5)Richard S.
We have been regulars for well over twenty years. The Sushi/Sashimi is consistently fresh and prepared with artistry. Don't expect fancy/Americanized rolls or Asian fusion. Service is alway friendly and informative and the sushi chef suggests what is fresh and special. The restaurant itself is warm and cozy with touches of authentic Japanese culture. I have traveled to Japan many times and this restaurant is very close to what you would experience in a neighborhood Sushi Bar.

Kura Barn is easily one of the best Japanese restaurants in New York, hidden away out in Huntington, Long Island. The owners and staff are warm and welcoming, and the food is spectacular! Delicious, cool, silky tofu, which was a blessing on this extremely hot and humid day... Buttery, gorgeous cuts of toro and hamachi... Even the uni (not usually my favorite) was delicious and fresh tasting. We had the omakase (chef's choice) and every dish was better than the last. See my photo of the sushi selection! SO DELICIOUS! (Thank you Makoto-San!) Great selection of sake and cold Sapporo on tap. The restaurant is in a converted house, and is comfortable and filled with beautiful woodwork (made by the owner's family). If you're looking for great Japanese food in a welcoming, home-like atmosphere, check this place out. You'll be glad you did! :)
(5)Stephen B.
Excellent! Higher end with a great little book of specials dishes. NIcely prepared.
(4)Andrew K.
Japanese owned and the best Japanese place around Huntington. I think I've found the place to go for authentic Japanese. Service and food is great, A+.
(5)Reo T.
Whenever I go to Long Island, I always stop by here!!! They are well known for years of great quality Japanese food and service. They have their own parking lot on premises so good for families as well. Recommend sitting at the sushi bar where the owner chef can entertain you not only with his skills but with his funny great personality!!! He can joke around a lot and still manage great quality food at the same time!!! Front waiter services are done by two great Japanese ladies greeting you with a smile each time! Very friendly yet professional service which you can't get anywhere else. Head chef is a great cook as well and provides home style cooking and original dishes. Sake collection is not a lot but very selective and decent!!! i always start with a draft beer and work myself up to the sake's!!! But if your driving, just be careful!!!! I always do "OMAKASE" where I let the chef's decide whats to make and also give some requests which they greatly please me!!!! Price may vary so inquire with the waitress or manager and they will work within your budget. Usually about $60 without drinks and will full-fill greatly!!!! Not too many Japanese owned Japanese restaurants out there lately especially in Long Island area but this is a great place where you will not be disappointed!!!!

I have been a customer of Kura Barn since it opened in the 1980's, but this is the first time I've been back since moving back to the area. The food, ambiance, service, and customer attention has not changed - it is still wonderful! The menu is large with many wonderful specials for both appetizers and main dishes - the scallops are incredible, but of course, the sushi is the big draw - I love the special rolls they offer - fresh, light, tasty, delicious....I could go on! I am happy to see this restaurant still thriving, and I am happy to be able to revisit one of my favorite places once again!
(5)Scott K.
The sushi fish here is very fresh. My wife said her salmon teriyaki was very good. Their roll selection was not as varied as some places. Its a little more than you might pay elsewhere, but not by much and its high quality.
(4)s y.
this is truly a family restaurant. it's been around for 35 years now. been coming here since i was a kid. consistently awesome. the fish is always fresh, the cooked food always hits the spot, and the staff is pleasant and courteous. the decor feels like you are in a japanese home, very zen like. with really cool woodwork on the walls. They also have a variety of delicious cold sakes to try as well. Don't forget to leave room for their homemade Chocolate Mousse, absolutely delicious, you won't regret it! i recommend: Appetizers: - Crispy Scallops - Chicken String Bean - Soba Soup - The best Ginger dressing (you can even purchase it) - Gyoza Entree's - Anything Tempura (always light and fluffy) - Teriyaki Sauce is the best on LI. Not salty, but more on the sweeter side Rolls - Tsunami Roll - Summer Rolls - Super Shrimp Tempura Rolls - Spicy Crunchy Sushi/Sashimi: - Blue Fin Toro - Anago - Super White Tuna - Kampachi
(5)Thomas W. C.
It does not get any better! The owner/ sushi chef, Mikoto is the best!

I especially like the negimaki and tempura ice cream. I've been here many times and I'll go back again.
