Didn't find any of the food appealing. Had the mushroom pappardelle on my most recent visit and it was disgusting - totally oily, lacking salt, and gave me a tummy ache. Prices are ludicrous for this quality of food.

This is why you live in New York. It's not Paris, but it can FEEL like it, at the right restaurant. I had the thon tartare and the saumon, both perfect. So were the wine and the service.

I've been back to Jacques on numerous occasions and I have never been disappointed. The food here is nothing but perfect. The highlight of any trip to Jacques continues to be the moules-frites. They have several varieties and I've been happy with them all. (Dijonnaise style is my definite favorite). I've been to Paris and had moules-frites on more than one occasion there --- Jacques's are better! I swear! (Yes, I know this is a Belgium style brasserie, but I'm just saying) Beyond the moules-frites, everything else has been wonderful. I love the steak tartare, the croque monsieur and madame, etc... Although I haven't gotten through the entire menu yet, I'd be shocked to find something that suddenly did not live up to the expectation of everything which has come before it. The entire staff at Jacques is welcoming and accommodating. They make you feel at home. So should you come into Jacques??? Most definitely - what are you waiting for?

Oh boy. This used to be our neighborhood French place but good grief has it gotten rough. Tonight my lovely wife and I were celebrating a new job with wine and oysters. The waiter was very nice. We were seated quickly and got our water right away. She ordered a nice Bordeaux and Bluepoints. They arrived, she ate one and nearly gagged. Slimy and awful. Not your normal Bluepoint. "Waiter! Can you please take these back, they are not right." "Sure, I'm sorry" Not a minute later our nauseating Bluepoints are back at our table in the hands of the T-shirt clad manager, "these are not bad, these are good oysters" says the manager poking his finger into one of the larger, slimier ones. "These are fine" "We've had a few oysters in our day and I'm sorry to say, No, they aren't, they are disgusting, are you arguing with me?" "There is nothing wrong with these oysters, we aren't charging you, but they are fine" he snarled. Annnnnnnd that's the last time we come to Jaques.

Sadly I was very disappointed in this place. I had wanted to try it for a while but now that I have I will not be going back. My experience will explain why... We arrived at 6 PM on a Thursday. The restaurant was not busy, yet it took 15 minutes to get room temperature water and menus. I asked the waiter what the soup of the day was. He replied "lentil" so I ordered it. 10 minutes later, he returned.. Waiter #1: "I was wrong. The soup of the day is not lentil. Would you like it anyway?" Me: "What is the soup of the day?" Waiter #1: "Oh, hold on, let me check" Another 5 minutes pass and a new waiter approaches... Waiter #2: "Who ordered the soup?" Me: "I did" Waiter #2: "Ok. Soup of the day is lentil" Me: "But the other waiter said it isn't lentil" Waiter #2: "Then what did he say it is?" Me: "He was going to check for me" Again, 5 minutes later... (at this point my boyfriend already has his appetizer) Waiter #1: "The soup of the day is root vegetable" Me: "Ok sure, I'll take it" Waiter #1 walks away and waiter #2 comes back... Waiter #2: "I'm so sorry Miss but it actually turns out that we are out of all soups" Me: "Even the root vegetable?" Waiter #2: "We don't make root vegetable soup" Me: "Ok" 10 minutes later my soup finally arrives. It was lentil.

Indifferent Sunday 6pm service with five tables occupied Frisse was limp (really?) And those lardon were fried bacon with a cold poached egg with way to much dressing. The terrine was average . How unfortunate there are much better places with the Manhattan version of french service and food at the same price point

Absolutely the most dishonest restaurant in the big apple! For the third time, And after paying the bill in cash each time, they neglected to give me back the change. They round off the bill, and it's always In their favor. Tonight, however, my husband complained, and they said they always round it off, and sometimes it comes out in the customers favor. Ridiculous! Can you imagine if grocery stores and all other eating establishments started doing that? They must make a great deal f extra money every night off of their unsuspecting customers. They don't even try to deny it! Stay far far away from this place. And the owner is also in agreement on this because he is well aware of what's going on. I won't be back, and neither will my friends! Total rip off of unsuspecting people!

Found this place just walking down the block. Nice looking brasserie with authentic French flair. Good bar, nice beers and wines. Ordered burger and mussels. The burger was perfect in every way - ordered rare and that's how it came out, juicy, perfect size, tasty cheese. The mussels, while tasty, had a lot of beards and sand. If not for that I would have given them easily four stars. The chef or owner should really pay more attention!

party of 6 for dinner on a not too busy thursday night. the soft-shell crab was adequate-same with the tuna salad. service was somewhat inhospitable, and after our waiter knocked over a drink on the table, which created a pool of liquid on the floor, i don't think we got so much as an apology. the food here is too unrefined to justify the unpleasantness from some of the staff. to jacques' credit, though, they make a mean french fry. then again, so does mcdonald's.

This IS a French Bistro. I came here for brunch and the food was delicious! I had the Omelette Provençale which has a nice blend of tomato sauce, spices, and creamy goat cheese. I like that the egg dishes come with both a lightly tossed salad and some excellent fries. Unfortunately the service was very slow and the waitstaff inattentive, even though the restaurant was not nearly at capacity.

Three out of four of us had a fantastic meal. The one was a disaster from start to finish. Kind of harshed our dining experience. In the past I have been this person at the table (at this restaurant) so it brought back terrible memories. Its a shame since our last experience here was really superb. We will try again but if something like today happens again I foresee another year hiatus. They really hate cooking meat over rare. Beware. Well done came bloody with half raw eggs!!! One thing to note. Try the french toast! Really delicious and the serving is plenty.

no undersea adventures with Mr. Cousteau here, but Jacques Brasserie is still a fine spot for sampling French cuisine. it's pretty rare that I have canard a l'orange, but it was a good choice. tender, flavorful duck with sauteed scallions and...wait...prune gnocchi? never heard of that before, but it was actually pretty tasty. the orange sauce was nice and tangy. so far as the atmosphere here, it was a bit more relaxed than most French places. I was also a fan of the selection of Belgian beer available. service was good on a Saturday afternoon - attentive but not overbearing. overall? solid spot for French dining. probably on the higher end of 3-stars for me, but it'll take a repeat investigation to merit bumping up to 4 methinks.

Great neighborhood place to stop in for lunch. Had the burger and a glass wine - both great - except unusual thing abt the burger is they melted the bleu cheese onto the bun top not the meat. They were very warm and welcoming, and especially friendly with the young infant in tow!

Great Thanksgiving meal tonight. A bit pricey but-- service was great, the special thanksgiving meal was great, and food off the regular menu was also delicious. Between us we had: warm crusty bread, tuna tartare (huge portion and so tasty!), tomato red pepper soup, a turkey platter, steak frites, poulet roti, and apple tart (yumm!!!) Also-- our waiter suggested me an amazing white wine choice. I'm going back just for that wine and to try out their moules frites next time!!

My husband and I walked over to Jacques recently after a lovely spring walk in Central Park. We were looking forward to enjoying their croque monsieur for lunch, but we were shocked when we received our dishes...have had croque monsieur many times at different restaurants both in NYC and Paris. It was just plain awful. We actually are still talking about it days later..the appearance was not pretty, the bread was two slices of white bread (similar to wonder bread), with poor quality ham, way too much bechamel sauce, and the cheese was extremely burnt. It tasted stale, old...maybe it was premade/frozen? This was served with burnt, completely tasteless fries and a small salad (with some completely wilted leaves mixed in) which was not good either. Overall, a really terrible experience. My husband let the waiter know that the dish was not good and he simply took the plate, walked away and removed it from the bill...he did not even ask what was wrong with it or how mine was. Did I mention I had the same dish (but it was croque madame)...same awful flavor with an egg that was a bit too undercooked. We decided it was not worth addressing further as we just wanted to get out of there as quickly as possible. So we got stuck with paying for one disgusting dish. I am writing this review in the hopes that they address this croque situation asap. Unfortunately, we will not be returning to see if it improves.

One at the bar, Saturday 845p, no wait. Nice day out. Mid-rare steak frites, bearnaise, perfect martini. All good... Slightly warm bread, always quite nice. Steak cooked to temp, a generous cut but a tad tough. Nice color on fries but lacked a little crispness. Bearnaise, really good, balanced and well textured, not the lazy stuff. Bartender was slammed but gracious and attentive. People queued for a table don't really know what to do with themselves. No podium or host's station (actually quite nice) but without a visual cue, seating waiting parties was a little disheveled, perhaps not as much as an issue on quieter nights. Some observed service at tables was rough, to the point that I'm hesitant. A fine neighborhood place, entry on street vs avenue helps set a warm and more intimate tone. 3.5 stars if that were an option.

The place seems to have a nice outdoor seating area which is what attracted us. But the food was subpar and not worth the price. My friend had a salmon salad which, on the surface, looked OK but there was something about it that sent us both rushing to the bathroom after just a few bites. We talked all day afterwards about how horrible it was. And the waiters did not seemed concerned at all. I would think that restaurants in manhattan would need to be more competitive in offering quality food. I was surprised. I definitely won't go there again.

This review is for lunch only- This place is certainly pricey. I had a salade nicoise which was $20! The portion was large and I could have certainly split it with someone else. It was fantastic though. The service was mediocre at best. When I ate here it was quiet and the waiter was not very warm or attentive, I am generally a non-fussy eater, but I was definitely feeling neglected by the wait staff. I can't imagine what it's like on a busy night. My only complaint was that I was charged $3 for a small glass of soda water?!?! It came from the gun, not even a bottle of Perrier- what is up with that. When I asked the waiter he got really nervous and implied he didn't want to say anything to the supervisor out of fear- let me speak to him myself! I would like to try this place sometime for dinner, maybe. The decor is lovely and feels very French European inside. It seemed like a good choice for a romantic dinner. There is also outdoor seating as well.

Go for the mussels. The service was super slow. Our main courses came out in phases. The kitchen seemed over burdened so perhaps we went on a bad night. The roti (chicken) was a huge serving but the chicken was dry. We asked for buttered noodles for my youngest daughter and got the buttered mushroom pasta dish which was not a kid friendly dish at all (she ate my mussels instead and I ate the pasta). The pasta dish was tooooooo buttery, almost shellacking the pasta. The provencal mussels are way better than the chardonnay mussels but be prepared to drink a gallon of water and smell like garlic for the next 24 hours. Despite all of this, the mussels themselves are well prepared and fresh.

This is an excellent neighborhood spot. I can't say that the food is excellent or even consistent, but I used to practically live at the bar. I love the mussels dijonais. I learned a lot about how to enjoy French food from the innumerable hours I spent at this place when I lived around the corner. I miss it desperately.

"It was fine", she said. She brushed her hair aside in order to see into her purse, which was sitting under the bar. He grabbed her wrist gently. "I got it. Put your wallet back." "Are you sure? You only had a tiny bite of my endive/beet salad that was dressed with a light vinaigrette and was, while fresh and tasty, nothing special." "I also had a Palm, a bite of your decent goat cheese tart, and my Moules Frites that came with soggy, flimsy, under-seasoned thick cut fries and slightly over-steamed mussels in a decent Mariniere sauce." "If you insist..." Letting him pay. Was it too archaic? She still had some time to change her mind. The bartender/bar server/host was running around, mixing drinks, placing orders, and seating guests. The vaguely French-sounding barkeep finally picked up the Amex. Too late. They slipped on their light jackets for the short walk home and stepped through the outdoor seating and onto the sidewalk. The street lights flickered in the waning evening light as the uniquely Manhattan mix of subtle trash bag, car exhaust, dog urine, and stagnant puddle smells filled their noses. "Next time it's my treat. And although the food wasn't bad and it had a nice atmosphere, probably not at this same restaurant." "That sounds splendid." And into the night they went.

Tried: foie gras, escargot, scallop risotto, steak tartar, the creme brulee, espreso martini, dirty martini and two glasses of some desert wine (port I believe). I feel like I got a pretty good experience of their menu and I have to say, all of it tasted like happy. The escargot and the espresso martini were my most surprising delights. Like when someone sucks on your toe and you're like...oh....that's weird....I kinda like it. I mean, you always knew that other people liked it but you never thought you would. Yea...it's like that. Sexy, sexy food here, folks.

I came in for dinner with a friend on a recent trip to New York, and enjoyed myself so much, we came in the next night as well. Excellent food, a very welcoming atmosphere, and oh the food. I had the steak frites au poivre the first night, and loved everything about it. The second night I had the poulet roti which was absolutely amazing. How can chicken be so flavorful? Lovely wines, good drinks, and just a lovely couple of evenings all around. I found the service to be excellent, attentive but not at all intrusive. Sess, in particular, was wonderful. I would come back again based on his stellar service alone.

Always consistently delicious, and the atmosphere and service are wonderful too. Just celebrated NYE at Jacques last night. It's a special place for us -- my fiance and I had our 1st date there. Since we just got engaged, we wanted to celebrate NYE there too. They heard our story and gave us the best table in the house. Couldn't recommend more highly!

Very traditional kind of French restaurant with an good atmosphere. It doesn't attract a lot of young people, but food and service is always good. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat there, but if you live in an area its a good place to have around the corner.

I owe Jacques an apology, which is another way of saying what a dumb ass I am for not coming back sooner! My wife and I went there to celebrate Bastille Day last evening and had a really terrific meal, probably the best mussles we've ever had. For quiet some time, whenever we're in the mood for mussles, we've been going to Flex and have always been satisfied, but never thrilled. Last night showed us what we've been missing and what truly fabulous mussles should taste like. My wife had the Dijonnaise and I had the Provencale, and both were out of this world! The waiter was wonderful -- friendly and attentive. We also had a special Bastille Day punch which was sublime, and at $7 a glass I can only hope they keep it on the menu! Vive la France! Vive la Jacques!!!

Best moules frites in the UES!! The dijionaise is a mustardy, buttery, garlicky delight with a side of perfect fries. Nice beer and wine selection too. My own criticism is the drab atmosphere inside and the patchy service due to a lack of servers.

Went here for brunch last sunday with a couple girl friends. Great food, reasonably priced. We had the prefix brunch menu for $20 which consists of either a salad or pastries, an egg entree and a glass of mimosa.

I don't know why there were no reviews written about this place since September. I almost didn't come because of the lack of reviews, but I was very happy that we did go after eating. The food was terrific, the service was professional and unobtrusive, and the place was charming. What more could I ask? We were a party of 6 friends coming from near and far. The folks from Philly had the longest trip and those of us from Putnam were second. Brooklyn was practically in their neighborhood. We each thoroughly enjoyed our choices: mussels, lamb sausage sandwich and salmon. We sat and talked for a long time in the side room and weren't disturbed by other diners. Next time I am in the area I will be sure to be back.

Spent a lovely afternoon here with my daughter and daughter in law. We all had the business lunch which came with a huge salad and delicious warm and crusty bread. The moules frites, burger and chicken sandwich were all delicious with generous portions. The coffee ice cream sundae with espresso and fudge was a perfect ending.(we shared one and it was plenty) Good service and a nice ambience, comfortable enough to have a long lunch with lots of laughing. I will return here.

Awesome local neighborhood spot. Very reasonable price for the amount and quality of food, and spot-on authentic parisian atmosphere. I ordered the french onion soup, and while I don't think that was their strong course, I loved the muscles and snails... YUM! I've been wanting to try their new bar called 1534 in nolita for a while, but in the meantime I will definitely be back here. Visiting Jacques is like taking a vacation to Paris for a few hours...

The worst croque monsieur ever. No gruyere and made of cheddar. Terrible. The mussels were good however and service. But really they should change that item or change their designation as a French restaurant.

Classic French bistro with a cozy inviting feel but too expensive for what it is. I've been walking past it for years, glancing somewhat longingly at the inviting room behind the half window curtains. It exudes that cozy french bistro feel. But whenever I'd peruse the menu I was always turned off but the just a bit too expensive prices. Eventually I met a regular who couldn't stop raving about the fish and chips so I had to give it a try. The room is indeed just as cozy as it looks and the service prompt, professional and solicitous. When my date inquired about a particular drink they immediately brought a taste. The menu is classic Fr bistro; steak tartar, moules frites, tarte l'oignon... Everything on other tables looked and smelt great so I was looking forward to the rave fish and chips. They were good, two perfectly golden fired pieces of fresh fish, with a basket of fries and a side of tartar. But were they $21.00 good??? I wish I could say yes, but I cant. Maybe if you got a larger portion. But as is I just can't give more than 3 stars based on price.

I live just down the street from Jacques. I love coming here for a good meal in the neighborhood. The sirloin and the provencal mussels are great. I have never been disappointed. If you live in the area and need a new dinner spot, add Jacques to your list. FYI- They have a great brunch and a mussels and beer special on either Monday or Tuesday nights.

I have been to Jacques on a number of visits to NYC - always for Sunday brunch and always for the Croque Madame. Sure - there are many other options I could try but why mess with a great thing (particularly after a late night on the town). I love the atmosphere, the neighborhood "hangout" vibe - but I do have one mega-complaint - they no longer serve Leffe Brown on tap!!!

  • Martha M.

Don't show up here wearing a hoodie. You will get looks. But, if you're a confident person and you know that your Amex Platinum is as good as everyone else's, and debt free, probably unlike everyone else's, you'll enjoy this place...even if you are wearing a hoodie. The beer selection is good, but there should be more on tap, because I like beer on tap. It tastes better. The steak frites were great. The steak was peppery, and the frites were crispy and salty--yum. The steak tartare, which I sampled, was also amazing--nice ratio of egg, beef and pickle, and, for the first time I've ever had steak tartare, sufficient triangles of toast. I will be back, and maybe next time I'll dress up. It was raining, people, and I was hungry!

I had been to Jacques about two times before last night, as I used to live next door to there. Had the mussels once and the burger once and thought it was fine. My mother-in-law wanted to go get a burger on the UES for her birthday last night and they mentioned they made a rezzy. So I went on yelp out of mere curiosity to check the latest reviews and thought they might have been harsh. I remembered Jacques being a pretty good place --- and maybe it was 2-3 years ago. My party did seem to enjoy the mussels although I have not checked on them today to see if they saw their see-food again. Myself, I had the yellow squash soup which was really tasty. This was part of the "prix fix" menu which I did not realize was only choose two, not an app, entre, and dessert. Entre was the hangar steak which was pretty decent, but there was just way too much sauce all over the plate. Tried my wife's marinated calamari salad which was ok --- but it was loaded with oil just like everything else on the menu. ... and then I tried the burger. Hold on, I am getting nauseous just thinking about it.... ok, I am back. Have you ever defrosted a burger from like 5 months ago and just hoped it would taste good when cooked? And then you tried it and it tasted/smelled like trash? Well that would have been a welcome relief to the nastiness that was the burger. I guess the meat was spoiled or just poor quality, but it was one of the worst restaurant burgers I have ever tried. I doubt I'll be stopping by this Jacques for an under or overwater exploration anytime soon.

i came here two years in a row for Valentine's day and it has failed to disappoint me. I'm a fan of salmon and tilapia and this place makes it just right for my taste. It's a very cozy place and not very pretentious compare to other French restaurants in the city. Great place for couples!

Ate here on Valentines day. The octopus salad was delicious even if I thought it had too much garlic in it. We ate off the prefix menu which was very good. I had a chicken dish and she had the pork I believe. The dessert was amazing. Chocolate souffle was amazing. I really loved the vibe of the place.

Great French place for brunch or dinner. Delicious food, great wine selection and Leffe, Kronenbourg and Hoegaarden draft beer. We had scallops and branzini , both entrees were excellent. French bartender , French decor, French music and even French channel on TV add up to a very nice vibe. Will be back soon.

The ambience is one of a well seasoned French Brasserie. We brought our friends from Paris to Jacques on the day they left. They were homesick and they said it reminded them of home. I agree. Great 100% sirloin beef hamburgers. You can sit at the bar watching european football on the french channel. I love the pommes frites and mussels here when the mussels are truly in season. They have five different sauces for the mussels and they are all fantastic! Nice wine list. Waitstaff has always been friendly and we've never had a problem with service even when they're slammed.

Went here for a very light dinner with a friend around 8pm on a Saturday. No wait, sat outside. We shared an the Endive Salad and tomato garlic Moules Frites (a bucket of mussels and a cup of fries), totaling $32.50. Felt authentically French for 3 reasons: 1) The table behind me was speaking French (always a good sign when you have French people at a French restaurant) 2) The waiters have French accents 3) Most of the menu was not cheap for the quantity, but in my experience, French cuisine is about quality and always leaves room for dessert, opposite the American shove-your-face-until-you're-bloated-for-$9.99 deal That said, I do think the bucket of mussels is a great deal! They don't cheat you by filling it halfway like at Bubba Gump. We didn't get any dessert, but oh my did the chocolate souffle at the table next to us look amazing! I didn't get to taste it, but judging by the way the 13-year-old boy was scarfing it down, I'll get it next time. That and a glass of wine to go with the mussels. Service was great, normal serve time, and even replaced our shell plates halfway through. Had to call them to bring us our check, but they were prompt. Cesca B., I don't know why one person would want a whole pot of mussels either. The Moules Frites are for sharing yo :)

I am giving this Bistro 3 stars for their menu choices, their prix fixe choices, and such. My husband's sister took us out for my birthday and another celebration. I was quite happy to be taken out, and enjoyed myself. The only thing is, the only problem, is that the mussels made me ill. A few hours after eating, I became sick, and today am not feeling well either. I do not know if it was because I wear a nose ring (he he he) or if they were having an "off-day", but I have a small case of food poisoning from eating here. I know it was definitely the mussels because I was the only one in our party who ate them. The other diners I was with did not fall ill from their food. (Lucky) They have nice wines by the glass, and their creme brulee is good. Please eat here with an ebb of caution, because I did and am, in fact ill from the mussels. It is a shame because it is a quaint place, and perfect to sit outside or inside. The staff were polite, too! If any employees are reading this- please look into your mussels. They would be wonderful if I did not fall ill. A-ok for service, decor, outdoor seating, menu options and wine!

Never been a huge fan of french food. The appetizers were definately a hit, but the entres were not. Tuna tartar - pretty good, but not the best Onion Tart with goat cheese - LOVE IT!!! Roasted Chicken entre - chicken was over cooked Pepper Steak - pretty good Lamb Chops - over cooked I don't expect to go back again.

Meh is right. This is basically a Generic Brand French Bistro. Charming outdoor seating area? Check. Slightly snooty waitstaff? Check. Classic items like steak tartare and moules frites? Check. However, Jacques never transcends itself to become anything special or interesting. At a recent brunch here, I had a sub-par chicken sandwich with a side of semi-tasteless fries. With so many French options in the city, I'm not sure what you would need to seek out here (though, again, the outdoor seating area is very pleasant and nice). Cafe D'Alsace, which is in the same neighborhood, is a better option.

I am ashamed....If i where a religious man (during the middle ages) i would flagellate myself until i bled all of the lame-ness of last night out of my poisoned system. i have been coming to Jacques for literally years and have always liked the friendly service and the fantastic mussels. Recently however i went with a very serious foodie friend who i had been talking about the moulle frite to for weeks and it SUCKED. this was not bad it was horrible - wrong dishes, cold mussels, warm steak tartare, salad that tasted like urine, and TWO types of mussel broth choices that where mediocre at best. i was there trying to sell the idea of myself as a trustworthy foodie and ended up wishing i had gone to Jackson Hole (at least it's an ironic foodie place) damn

I have been here twice and both times have been VERY pleased with the food. The onion tarte is wonderful, the mussels were perfect, and the creme brulee wasn't bad either! The wait staff was friendly and attentive and the decor is very charming and pleasant. Overall it's a great neighborhood Bistro that I think I should frequent a bit more.

Ok, so for the most part the Yelp reviews of Jacques are lukewarm to moderate. Selfishly, and having been to Paris nice (9) times in the last ten (10) years and spending most of my live in New Orleans what I can tell you is this humble French restaurant is quintessential Parisian with a hint of New Orleans. The hint of New Orleans is the free spirit of the staff and management to extend a kind, caring, food centric experience to all. I enjoyed an appetizer of Mussels and main course of Cassoulet that was delightful. I look forward to the return to Jacques. Enjoy all... Vin

I was dying to eat here on a friday evening. The place was about half full, light jazz music in the front- it had a great vibe; The only problem was it took a full 10 minutes to get a menu. 15 minutes later, still having no drinks, we just left to satiate our appetites!!! Only go if you're feeling patient!

Awesome mussels for an incredible price. Seriously for $20 you get a pot...yes a giant pot... of mussels plus pretty good frites. Cute little place to visit on the UES. Highly recommend!

The four of us ate dinner and requested the Prix Fixed but they didn't have it:( So we ended up getting the Hanger steaks, mussels, and roasted chicken. We had the chocolate soufflé for dessert and a bottle of Cote du Rhone. Nice.

A nice spot on the way home. I had the 'steak and frittes' and it was great with a few beers. If you need a Bud Light, this isn't the spot. They have some great beers from Belgium ala' Cafe B (75th street). If you speak French try you language skills with the staff. A lot of people were speaking French but not enough to annoy me. The last thing I need is trying to enjoy my meal in a room full of Gaullists blabbing about "Liberte' Egalite' Fraternite' and Maurice Chevalier" Mussels. I don't like them. I was almost the only one there not eating mussels. It seemed that every table had a kettle or two filled over the brim with cooked mussels, their little mouths agape. If you like them, this seems like 'The Place' for serious mussel eaters. A friend says they are great and the stew or sauce is great for bread dipping....Whatever the hell that means...!

GREAT fries! (frites) Absolutely fantastic, some of the best fries I have ever tasted. Mussels were not stupendous. Want to go back and try the burger, with sliced apple and blue cheese it sounds great. We enjoyed the peach lambics with our meal. Nice spot to sit outside and while away an evening.

Had dinner here again with a couple of friends. Waitstaff was cordial and busboys were efficient, as usual. I enjoyed their Tartare de Thon Frais but wasn't so thrilled with the Coquilles St. Jacques--there was something in the mushroom risotto which ruined it with a "cabbagey" odor and had a crunchiness to it (No, it wasn't the Manchego either and cabbage wasn't in the ingredients listed). In the past, I've tried their steak frites with Bearnaise and found it quite flavorful although I'm not a frites fan in general, but their's had an interesting taste to it. I've also had their L'oeuf Marocaine for brunch and it took some getting used to, particularly the provençale sauce, but it was quite tasty. I particularly like the fact that they serve the Belgian Lindeman's Lambic fruit-flavored beers and ping-pong between Peche and Framboise although I wish they'd stock other flavors (I know others exist)--if they did, I'd be likely found quaffing a brew sitting at their bar every evening since they're in my neighborhood!!!

No-frills French bistro, pretty awning. Brunch is not bad. French toast, bacon, etc., cup of coffee. How can you go wrong with that? You eat in the front room where the bar is. Or outside. But, dinner is a big disappointment. They have a very limited menu and no specials! I guess if everyone at your table likes mussels, there's something you can eat. But, if you're not into mussels, you're in big trouble at Jacques. I've been here several times over the years, always at someone else's suggestion. Each time I think it has to be better than the last, or else how could they stay in business? The food is always such a disappointment because this restaurant would be so convenient for me. And it's not a bad looking place. Too bad.

Yeah, I don't know. Good...but I don't know if the food justifies the prices...I like mussels as much as the next girl, but I couldn't eat a whole pot of them so while my friend ordered one of the varieties of mussels, I got the chicken with spinach and mashed potatoes. His french fries were quite tasty, and I liked my entree...I just don't know it if it was really worth $21. I probably won't go back.

We live in the neighborhood and have been going to Jacques several times a year since it opened. Went again the other night and it's better than ever. If you are looking for an authentic, lively French Bistro with excellent food, a good wine list, a friendly and helpful wait staff, and reasonable prices, it would be hard to beat Jacques.

Jacques was my old stand-by when I was living on the UES, but during my 3 years living in the neighborhood I did notice a change in Jacques food, most noticeably their steak frites. The steak cuts they use change from time to time, sometimes for the better and sometimes for the worse. When they are good, it's really good, when it's bad, it's not horrible, but definitely not worth writing about. Overall I really enjoy Jacques, they have standard French bistro fare, good wine, and outdoor seating for those warm summer nights. How can you pass it up?

  • Lauren B.

This is one of my standby restaurants when taking out friends in the UES neighborhood. The food is consistently well-prepared and very fresh! The wine list is lovely and the desserts always tasty (in particular the apple tart is beautifully prepared) On busy nights there can be a bit of a wait, but you can have a seat at an outdoor table or at the bar while you wait. The service is not completely consistent - some waiters have a bit of an attitude - but in general they are attentive. Its a nice bustling restaurant to enjoy dinner and drinks!

Went to Jacques on an impulse the other night as we walked by, and we weren't dissapointed. Is it the best place to get Moules and Frites in the New York area? No- Waterzooi is. However, the moules were better seasoned here than at B Bar and the fries did their job. I also had the green salad which was delicious and although the beers were overpriced as least they had some good Belgian beer to enjoy with the moules. You'll see us here again if we get a hankering and can't get to Garden City- but we probably won't seek it out. Once you have Waterzooi, you can't go back...

This place looks very nice. Ever since I moved to the US from Belgium I have been missing brasseries and bistros and the food that they tend to serve. I was so excited when I saw that they offered croque monsieurs and madames. I asked for the croque madame without ham to which the waiter replied that a croque madame is with ham with somewhat of an attitude. Really, is it? Thanks for that information! I can't even count how many croque madames I have ordered in my life, never has anyone refused to make it without the ham. My sister in law ended up ordering the croque monsieur. It didn't look too great and made me think more of a bruschetta monsieur. Maybe it's pre-frozen with the ham... that would at least show that it's not that they wouldn't do it.

If I could hand out four and a half stars I would - Jacques' deserves it. Jacques' excels at what it is...an authentic Parisien neighborhood bistro (think of it as a less-stuffy Benoit). Nestled in the upper east side, this is a true neighborhood gem - warm and inviting, great, moderately-priced food and a good selection of affordable wine. Perfect for a romantic dinner for two or small groups out for a great setting for collegial conversation and socializing. Authentic dishes include the classic frissee salad aux lardons, delicate truite and a broad selection of other seafood and carnivorous options. Not as much of a scene as Balthazar or Pastis, this is a great way to get in that authentic French fix right in the 'hood.

Baaaaad service and a mediocre dinner don't add up to more than 2 stars. I actually am only giving it 2 because my husband's dinner wasn't as bad as mine but he did order his steak medium rare and it was RAW (this is coming from someone who orders her steak rare frequently so I'm not opposed to that preparation - there were pieces of fat that were still white - cooked fat is more translucent). Back to the rest of the dinner - it started out with my ordering the burger, which came with blue cheese, ordered without said cheese. The waiter said, so you hate blue cheese? Um, what do you care? Then I asked if I could substitute mashed potatoes for fries (same price on the menu) and he raised an eyebrow. He said, I'll really have to check with the kitchen on that...as if this is some sort of insane request and he was doing me a huge favor. He never asked if I would have paid for the substitution (I would have), just made me feel like an ass for even asking. My husband then orders, and he at this point decides to take his pad out and makes us both repeat our orders and , to which he again reiterated his exasperation over my complicated potatoes for fries request and also commented, you really don't like french fries, do you? Is this even relevant? I said, I do, I just don't want them right now. My husband then ordered wine and the waiter just said, so, two glasses? I said, no (I'm pregnant) and he looked annoyed - we also never saw our waiter again after this. My husband gets his wine ($14!!) and about ten minutes later we get our food. Apparently, the potato substitution did not collapse the hierarchy of the kitchen as I got what I wanted. I cut my burger in half and at first bite, bit into something hard. Not exactly sure what it was, I spit it out and put it on my plate. Figured it was just a piece of hard fat or something? I ate one more bite and realized that this meat just tasted wrong so I decided that I wasn't going to ask for something else and would just eat the potatoes - I kind of lost my appetite at this point. However, I would have actually asked for the food taken off the check but alas, my waiter never once asked us how our food was or came to see us again. I figured at that point maybe he would notice when he cleared our food but of course, someone else did that and never said a word. My husband then said, why don't you try the other half of the burger? I picked it up and had a small bite, another hard thing was discovered. That was it for me. Unfortunately, no one ever bothered to ask me anything about this food and I didn't care enough at this point to flag my waiter down who was in another room the entire time. We got our check $65 - for steak frites, a burger and a glass of wine - and I left my first 10% tip ever. I'm sure it will all be chalked up to a difficult, picky customer.

I give this place 3.5 stars. I've had the goat cheese and onion tart, and the mussels in garlic/parsley/chardonnay. The tart was quite tasty, but the mussels were just ok. If you want mussels, try Cafe de Bruxelles: they'll give you more and also have a slightly larger variety of mussels. I've had other dishes too, can't remember what exactly, but those were also pretty good. Pretty good service, nice to sit outside on a sunny spring day (I've never sat inside, actually).

It is just another French brasserie with simple food and a mean Croque Monsieur, but it's off-the-beaten-path kinda ups the star value. Beers are cheap and the creme brulee is pretty damn good too.

When Jacques is on, this place can be enjoyable. The mussels/frites and the steaks are both quite good. But Jacques is too inconsistent to ever go back to again. Sometimes the service is horrible and sometimes the food is too. I've probably been here about 7-8 times in my life but I have not been back in over a year because it is just too inconsistent and when it is bad, it's really bad. Not recommended.

pretty good. my cousin took me here for my belated birthday dinner and it satisfied my french cuisine fix. we had a moules marinières as an app, and the portion was still huge. the rolls were delicious and i ate several with the moules, and had to stop myself so i wouldn't be full before my entree. i had a mushroom risotto with roasted scallops and my cousin had steak frites. my risotto was really cheesy (and came with an extra wedge of cheese) and the grains were larger than other risottos i've had. it was still pretty tasty and the scallops were perfectly roasted. my cousin's steak was definitely overcooked - she asked for medium rare and it came well done - but the fries were salted just right and just crispy enough. dessert was really rich - but the apple tart is so thin and has a great balance between fruit and pastry. the crepes suzettes were drenched in grand marnier and it was a bit strong. the service was wonderful and i'd love to come back here again for brunch sometime. if you sit outside, make sure you don't sit underneath the a/c unit in the apt above - a/c juice is the last thing you want in your wine glass.

Last week, Hailey and I checked out Jacques Brasserie on the Upper East Side. The restaurant has a "Belgian Feast" special where for you get a pile of mussels, frites and a draft beer from Sunday through Thursday 5:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Any menu that has the word 'feast' in it is right up my alley - we of course took full advantage of this special. Atmosphere It's been a long time since I visited France, but if I were to envision what a French restaurant looks like, Jacques Brasserie fits that stereotype. The restaurant has a small outdoor seating area and indoors is covered in dark wood and old French posters. There are lots of mirrors throughout the space to make it feel larger than it actually is (not that it's particularly small to begin with). It may just be me in my old age (28 years old, yikes!) but the place gives off a somewhat old-timey feel. Since we were there for mussels, I immediately jump to compare Jacques Brasserie to one of my favorite mussel places in New York City - BXL. Aside from the fact that one is French and the other is Belgian, I'd say BXL has a bigger bar atmosphere whereas Jacques Brasserie feels more like an actual restaurant. Take your pick for what you're looking for. Food Let's get feasting! The "Belgian Feast" special comes with a heaping pot of mussels, frites and a draft beer. On the menu, you have a choice of various flavors ranging from Marinieres (Chardonnay, garlic, parsley) to Provencale (tomato, garlic, basil) to Dijonnaise (mustard, shallots, garlic). Not wanting to get too crazy, Hailey and I decided on: Marinieres: Chardonnay, garlic, parsley Poulette: Chive and cream First things first, you get a nice basket of warm, fresh bread sliced from a baguette placed on your table. If you're asking why this is important you should probably just stop reading. This is essential so you have something to dip in the sauce leftover from the mussels. I'm a guy and I can put down a lot of food. Whenever I eat mussels I often have to down a lot of the little guys until I even feel remotely full. However, the mussels at Jacques Brasserie are nothing short of enormous. These are probably some of the largest mussels I've had in a long time and I surprisingly found myself pretty full after eating a bucket of them. In addition to the mussels, the frites were crispy and a nice golden brown color. They were coated in lots of salt which made them nearly addictive. Service The service at Jacques Brasserie was nothing short of great. Our waiter almost seemed enthusiastic to serve us, like I was doing him a favor. A side effect of eating mussels is lots of leftover shells. The staff eagerly shuttled discarded shells away so we were never left with anything resembling a Jenga-style pile of mussels waiting to tip over into our laps. Value For $22 you get a heaping bowl of mussels, frites and a draft beer. I challenge you to find a better deal with the same quality of food and atmosphere. Great value! The Verdict Jacques Brasserie has been a neighborhood staple on the Upper East Side more more than 20 years. I'm not sure how long they've been doing their "Belgian Feast," but it's one hell of a deal. The food was delicious, the service was superb and Hailey and I had a great experience. The only downside is the "Belgian Feast" only runs from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. so it can be a little tough to get there for those working a little later into the night. However, if you can skip out of work on time than head on up to the Upper East Side for a little taste of France. You won't regret it. *This meal was provided free, courtesy of Jacques Brasserie.

Came here a couple of times for brunch. The decor is elegant and has a charming French feel. My fiance had an order of the Chardonnay, garlic, and parsley moules frites, It was pretty good. I didn't want to order two buckets of mussels so I ordered the sausage sandwich instead. Big mistake! I was shocked at how unappetizing it tasted. Lesson learned: Definitely come here mainly formoules frites, they do these dishes very well.

Jacques is one of those underrated places that I'd like to keep a secret. The food is just always perfect, simple no fuss and the flavors are rich and on point. I've tried a lot of mussels around the city, from hip places and from super fancy French places and Jacques still has the best ones in my opinion. Everything else I've had, the duck, the steak, the goat cheese tarte, just as good! Plus in the warm months you can sit outside and people watch.

When one finds him- or herself wandering about the Upper East Side, far from Pastis and the other brasseries that seem to litter the streets of Soho like fake stars on the Planetarium ceiling, one can either procure a cab (or subway ride) downtown or one can simply step on over and into Jacques. The space has been a favorable argument for French cookery for years; it's one of those quietly elegant, upscale but not foofy, destinations that beckons you to be comfortable and enjoy some authentic French fare. It's not always healthy nor is it inexpensive, but it's always wonderful. Our most recent visit saw us having a cheese plate and a charcuterie plate as well -- always a good start -- and two among us ordered steak dishes, both of which were prepared perfectly. I had my usual -- moule frites with wine and garlic -- and as per usual, the broth was even more stellar than the mussels themselves. If there is one legitimate complaint about Jacques, it's that the staff is somewhat relaxed -- it's understood that a 90-minute dinner will take over two hours. A bit better service -- more attentive and/or responsive -- would probably go far. We'll return without question, but the service should be a bit more upscale to match the menu. Definitely worth a visit -- whether a special occasion or a rainy Saturday afternoon.

Had dinner on a Friday night at 7PM. Onion soup flat, not rich, wine was warm, beef bougnogne chewy with thin sauce, mussel dish was way too buttery and over cooked. Escargot sauce was garlicy but also flat other than that it was a nice place! For $109 with tip it was not worth it

Pros: Seated promptly despite packed restaurant. Got good table. Appetizers were excellent Wine by the glass was nice Didn't feel rushed Cons Waiter probably very new. Had trouble being heard over the crowd . Uneven waits for for most items: Menus took a while, appetizers a little slow, entrees forever, clean up pretty quick, dessert menus a while, had to ask manager for check. For appetizer and entree-only meal, 2 hours and 20 minutes. Neutrals: My steak Frites came with a large, tasty but leathery NY Strip (What happened to hangar steak?) The other entrees were "just OK to pretty good" Not their fault (probably) When I called to confirm my Open Table Res., no record of it. Over all, not a wonderful experience.

I had lunch with a good friend one weekday afternoon at Jacques. The atmosphere was casual and the cafe looked like a Parisian brasserie. The food was excellent and the portions were ample (much larger than that at other French bistros). My friend had a cheese plate which he said was very good and I had an omelette which was delicate with just the right amount of cheese. The one disappointment was the service which consisted of one man as bartender, busboy, and waiter. The restaurant was two-thirds full and our waiter is to be commended for keeping up. When we asked for separate checks, he told us we'd have to split one check. Other than those two minuses the experience was quite pleasant. I intend to go back for dinner soon.

Charming, if a bit fusty, French bistro on the UES. They don't mess with the classics and do them quite serviceably. I had one of the better moules marinieres I've ever had for my meal and the frites were really great. A little greasy but thin, crispy and piping hot. Every single mussel opened, no grit, and the buttery, wine-y, garlicy sauce was really great. So what if I had garlic coming out of my pores for a week? Worth it. The recommended wines were delicious and not too pricey The service was inconsistent but somehow right on tone for a lazy Saturday afternoon. I'd definitely return, and recommend for a lazy lunch or quiet date with an actual human.

There's two listings for this on yelp but I'll go with this one because it actually has the right name... For lunch you can get the "business lunch." A salad or pate, huge pot of mussels, and fries for $18.95. If you don't want the salad, mussels and fries is only $18.00. They have a couple of different "flavors." I went for the chardonnay, garlic & parsley. My salad was huge and tasty. The fries were also just how I like them. The mussels were great, hot, perfectly cooked, and obviously cooked in the sauce (a lot of mussel places on the UES just steam the mussels and then our the sauce variety you choose over it- like FLEX [or that's what I think anyway]). My only complaint is the sauce was a little too oily. My friend got the dijonnaise and I liked hers better.

After reading reviews, I couldn't wait to try their mussels & fries. Whoever said these are the best in the city, was sadly mistaken! They are edible, but the best? NO WAY! The best I have were both in Astoria at Sanford's & Locale. Travel to Queens for some really fantastic mussels! Jacques is a cool location, but not cool for mussels.

Review is for Drinks only. Good place for a quick drink after work, on the way home. They have a limited beer selection (3 drafts) but Leffe (Blond or Brown) is always available for cheap! The terrace earned them the fourth stat. I have never eaten there but don't take it as a bad sign: as a French, I try to avoid French Bistros which remind me too much of what I miss from my homeland...
