What a pleasant surprise this was! We got the recommendation from the folks at the Blue Swallow Inn to eat here so we listened and glad I did. When I 1st walked in, I was somewhat sceptical as I wasn't big on the appearance of the place. My opinion of that changed though the longer I was there. Each booth has a painting of locals sitting at the booth so it appears that someone is already seated there. It's a quirky little thing but fun. The menu is part Mexican part American grill. My mom and daughter ordered a steak and grilled pork chops. The grill side of the menu comes with soup and salad bar. The salad bar was small and had 2 different soups. The vegtable soup was homemade with real angus beef tips and was absoltely delicious. (I tasted my daughters who scarfed it down and had a 2nd bowl) The pork chops were grilled to perfection and came with 2 to the plate with 2 sides. All of this for 13.95. AN ABSOLUTE STEAL! My mom's NY strip was a little more but was equally good. My other daughter and I went for the Mexican side. I had the beef fajitas and she had the chichen tacos. The beef fajitas were the best I have ever had. The beef was actual sirloin steak and had a great grilled smokey beef flavor. The red bell peppers that it was served with were really sweet and not at all bland like most fajitas dishes I had. This is all served with sour cream, cheese, guac, pico, beans and rice. All Mexican entrees also come with chips and salsa(really spicy) and sopapillas. The Sopapillas were little pillows of pastry heaven. Oh and my beef fajitas were only 13.95! A great little treat on Route 66

We loved both if our entrees' from last night's dinner. Excellent chip and salsa to start... The salsa had the perfect spicy kick. Fresh, good portion sizes, nicely presented, and the flavor was excellent! Fun atmosphere with the wonderful murals on the wall and retro music overhead... Loved it all! A free shuttle is also available to pick you up and bring you back to your hotel in case guests don't want to drive. We still stop here again each time we come to town. This is one of our favorite cities...all retro with the nicest people and the main street has great colorful neon signs.

We arrived late in Tucumcarie and the wonderful folks at the Blue Swallow Hotel suggested the Pow Wow restaurant since it served food until 10. It's a fun funky little bar and grill. We loved it. The French dip was excellent and I have to say the Jalapeño burger was one of the best I've had in a while. Our waitress was super attentive and nice even that late. Good people. Excellent food.

We visited the Pow Wow restaurant during lunch on April 3. This charming quaint restaurant takes pride in its food and cleanliness. The food is not gourmet but, a safe "average." The entrée's seemed to come in smaller portions than what you would receive in a standard restaurant. However, the service is outstanding!

The good: We appreciated the large amount of food for the prices. My daughter's cheeseburger was cooked well and the onion rings were great. Any Mexican dish is also provided a sopapilla as a dessert. It was fresh and hot. My husband's meal also had a salad bar. The salad bar was not fancy, but the items were fresh and tasted good. The iced tea first round of ice tea was fresh (I'm fairly picky). The bad: had to ask our waitress 3 times for straws, food came out at different times. For New Mexican food, my son's smothered burrito and my taco plate was shockingly bland. The rice was ok, but the beans were so bland they may come out of a can. We had to ask for our ticket, because the waitress was busy with the manager. She gave us our ticket, but rang it up for the table next to us. It was this morning before I realized what happened. I'm glad it wasn't higher. That table got a free margarita (hope it was good). She almost gave my credit card to a different table (thank goodness they were honest). New Mexico is known for salsa, but I was thoroughly not impressed. It was mostly puréed tomato paste with some chile powder and some flecks of green (cilantro?). I won't be back. It was Sunday evening and I would have been better off driving through to Carl's Jr. In Santa Rosa.

I found myself staying in Tucumcari recently and dropped in for dinner since my options were pretty limited. I liked the murals on the walls, which were a little cheesy, but definitely added to the mood of the place. I ordered a chicken fried steak, along with sweet potato fries. Dinner items come with a trip to the soup & salad bar. The salad wasn't impressive and the dressing was really watery, but it was pretty close to closing time so I'm sure the salad bar would've been fresher if I'd come in earlier. I enjoyed the green chile stew, and it was probably the highlight of my meal. The sweet potato waffle fries were nice, but needed salt. The chicken fried steak was pretty disappointing, but not terrible - the meat was very thin and the breading was on the soggy side. My server said it was only her second day on the job, but I would've never known because she did a great job. If I ever visit Tucumcari again, which I probably won't, I'll definitely stop by again.

Good food, good atmosphere, friendly staff! Full bar.

Everyone who visits Tucumcari seems to love this place and the owners of the Blue Swallow highly recommend it as well. It's mediocre Mexican. Greasy, not super flavorful, a bit pricey for what you get, and just not that great quality. The margaritas were quite good and we got a 10% discount for staying at the Blue Swallow.

Go here! Quick service, reasonably priced, and the food is DELICIOUS. We had gone to some pretty good restaurants on our two-week road trip, but my boyfriend said this one was the best. The soup of the day was a green chile pork soup - beyond delicious. My companion got the Mexican sampler and cleaned his plate. I ordered the chicken taco salad and loved it as well. The chips and salsa were also tasty. The booths had cute decorations as well. Between this and the Blue Swallow Motel, Tucumcari has become one of my favorite towns in America.

GREETING: Entry was a little confusing as we entered through the bar portion of the building rather than the restaurant entry around the building - not clearly marked. The server was friendly and welcoming. DRINK ORDER: Taken and served right away Me: Water - No refill attempted or offered Wife: Iced Tea - Good, but no refill attempted or offered *Seemed to be only one server at the time of our meal, so this could be the reason ... And we could have easily requested it - just an observation. FOOD ORDER: Taken and served right away given there seemed to be one server for a fairly busy restaurant. -Me/Wife: Grilled chicken salad and chicken fajitas - Tasty chicken and straight forward salad. Overall enjoyable meal. SERVER: Friendly. We were checked on a couple of times. CHECK: Brought out, picked up and returned in sufficient time. COMMENT: A good recommendation by our motel manger. Would definitely return for another meal and would recommend to a friend. Thank you!!

Recommended to us by motel owner, so we went with it. It was a Sunday evening in this little town, so choices were really limited anyway. Mismatched furniture, including metal folding chairs?!?! Food service, as well as bar service, was slow and unimpressive. The ice tasted funny to me. Our table was too near the men's restroom which grossed me out and then when some sort of beetle, which I suspect was a roach, fell onto the table right next to my menu from the AC grate above (the ceiling tile around which was water-stained) I couldn't wait to get out of there. The upside was it was it was family-friendly and the servers were kind. The salsa was very good, but the warmed chips were almost burned. My chili relleno was good but the rest of my combination plate was mushy. But I guess i wasn't surprised....that's often what an enchilada and tamale smothered in sauce will be.

Kick-ass cheeseburger! Brioche bun, hand-formed grilled patty. All vegetables very fresh. You won't go wrong with this cheeseburger. Grilled to your chosen doneness. Good service, cool Route 66 ambience. 10% discount if you're staying at the Blue Swallow Motel. Tucumcari is a trip back to the 50's--60's!

I had the ribeye steak, and it was good and well seasoned, along with it came a salad bar. Simple is best when traveling.

We had a good Mexican dinner as we passed through Tucumcari. The service was decent and the staff was pleasant. The beer selection was good and the meal was good. The sopapillas that came with the meals were warm and especially yummy. The place has both a bar area and a restaurant area and the music from the bar was louder than I would have liked but was OK - playing oldies.

Service was good, food was acceptable on the low end (we had wings and salad bar serving). The booth we sat at smelled like urine that they tried to mask with cleaning product. Wouldn't return.

We went there last night and the service was great. Our waitress was attentive but not annoying. My husband got a green Chile cheddar burger with sweet potato fries. The burger was greasier than we would have liked and I don't remember any cheese but they did pile on the chiles. The fries were very good. I had the green Chile rellenos, which came with rice, beans, chips and salsa, and a sopapilla, Christmas style. The red Chile was better than the green,IMHO, which I was surprised by. The rellenos were kind of over battered but still good. The rice and beans were good, which is not common. The place was empty, but we went there late. I hate some Alien Amber beer, which was good but not great. Limited options in this town and this one was pretty good.

Tourist Mexican at best. Food was okay but you can find better Mexican food almost anywhere. Restaurant had a funny smell and the decor was a little creepy. Marquita was watered down and not well blended. Hotel gave me a 10% coupon which we discovered was only good for one item, saved $1.20...yea! Service was not great either.
(3)Lynette M.
Love the Pow Wow ! chile rellanos were the bomb !
(4)Joe W.
Don't let the looks of the exterior fool you. Once you get inside the food is good and the service is great. Have your server explain all the painting on the walls Our server was the mermaid. We will stop the next time we go through Tucumcari.
(4)Thomas C.
Not just any lounge, but a lizard lounge! Tasty being said, saw no lizards lounging about. Wife & I had tamales - tasty, filling & reasonably priced. After a long day on the road, three things any food joint should deliver. Would definitely go back.

Eating here was a roller coaster ride. The service is great, but the food is an emotional ride. There were two dishes that caught my attention: the Chili Rellenos and the Stuffed Sopapilla. My brother agreed, so we decided to order one a piece, so that we could sample both. My brother got the Sopapilla and was underwhelmed, so I traded him for the Chili Rellenos, which were awesome. In fact, they were a little hard to part with; it's been a while since I've had green chili. These chilis were legit. The sopapilla. I could see my brother's beef with said sopapilla--it was ungracefully pummeled with green chili. It wasn't bad, but I would probably not order it again. Then there was dessert. Our server sold us on the cheesecake chimichanga. Sounds exciting no? Wrong. It was like they robbed Sara Lee then rushed to defrost. Pow Wow was down to 2.5 stars at this point. Their saving grace was the cocktails we had after eating. The tables have paper menus of many, many drinks with descriptions and hey--their bartenders know what they're doing. Our Singapore Slings were made proper good. Cheers!

Great authentic Mexican food! Tamales in green sauce we're delish, and the sopapilla was yummy. I wish there was a place this good back in CT!

I really enjoyed the charm of this local hot spot. My friend and I stopped in for dinner here during our Route 66 road trip, and it was a refreshing change of pace from all of the fast food restaurants we'd seen. As soon as we entered, the manager came over to greet us. He began telling us about the place, particularly the pictures of locals painted on the walls, the history of the restaurant and the lizard lounge. The Pow Wow has a lot of character and charm, and everyone was so friendly. Even other patrons stopped by to say hello as they walked in! We enjoyed the food, and I'd especially recommend a Blue Swallow Margarita. Don't miss the quirky charm of this Route 66 restaurant.

Chile Relleno was okay. Margarita meh. Service pretty subpar. Touristy food spot with the food reflecting that.
(2)Cat P.
Food options are slim pickins in this town and nothing is really open on Sundays, so all things considered, this wasn't a bad dinner spot. My tacos were okay and they actually had some local brews out of Santa Fe, which I thought was pretty cool. They had a large stage area and dance floor, so I'm guessing they do live music on Friday and Saturday. Make sure you get a photo with the weird lizard statue and mind the odd murals of children with butterflies on the walls.
(3)Linda S.
Great menu and a lovely environment offering some historic pictures of Tucumcari as well as interesting paintings on the wall. Food was great and the service was prompt and helpful, but not invasive to conversation.
(4)Tim K.
The New Mexico T-bone steak was astounding. Smothered in green chilies and cooked to perfection. Great service and staff. I would highly recommend a visit.
(4)lisa B.
Friendly and courteous wait staff. Some of the best tacos ever and great guacomole. We enjoyed our dinner there while passing through tucumcari.
(4)Jonna C.
Had dinner at the Pow Wow on recommendation from the Blue Swallow Motel. Had the Carne Abadabo that was out of this world good! Hubby had fajitas that were also very very good! Got the blue swallow margarita & it was super yummy. They picked us up from & returned us to the motel. A super nice perk after a very long day in the car. Our driver & waiter Travis has got to be the Tucumcari ambassador. We laughed when he dashed off after seating us to put his apron on & come back to be our server! It was a fun, relaxing, and very, very good dinner! We did not get a chance to look around the bar area as they had just redone the floor that day. But we did get a chance to check out the cool paintings & murals around. We sat with the judge!
(5)Andrew G.
Friendly staff/service. Carnitas were delicious, salad bar and salad entrees were OK, but I wasn't really there for salad anyway! Drink prices were fair, and the large size tap beer helped everything go down easy. They have music some nights--though not when we were there--and the bar and restaurant open up into each other for one large space. You can eat on either side depending on your disposition. The mural of the people painted into the booths was a particularly nice touch in the land of murals! If you're staying at the Blue Swallow, make sure you get the discount coupon for the Pow Wow and save a few bucks to put in your tank for the trip on down the road.

At the recommendation of the staff at our hotel, we ordered take-out - "half pound" angus burgers with fries. My husband returned saying, "Robert Irvine would have field day with this place!" I was still hopeful until I opened the bag - first, the promised condiments were not there; second, the extra tomatoes I requested weren't provided; third, the fries were soggy & bland; fourth, the burgers were over-cooked. I could go on, but I think you get the picture. On our way home, we're stopping here again. We'll be picking up a bucket of chicken from KFC!
(1)John H.
Road kill ground round with baked potato, salad bar included. Excellent.
(4)David S.
I liked the ambiance. The patrons dressed up in full, non-ironic cowboy regalia, dancing to live music was great fun. However, the food my dad and I ordered was disappointing. He got a mediocre quesadilla, and I got a carnitas plate that melted my face off from the spiciness. I normally consider myself fairly desensitized to all things caliente; I dump Tabasco sauce on food like it's going out of style. But I could only muster a few bites of this plate - and regretted those. I left feeling humbled, hungry, and in search of my hotel room's toilet.

Good steak and great atmosphere. . Definitely would go back.
(4)Larry N.
They have a lunch buffet with Mexican food. I had a stuffed sopapilla which was pretty good, but the rice was the mushiest I have ever seen served. Overall not bad and the service got better through the meal.
(3)Amamda Z.
Service leaves a lot to be desired... We ordered burgers they where ok but my husband paid the extra dollar for bacon and got one soggy pice we complained and they took it off the bill so no big deal just FYI .
(3)Norman B.
Ate dinner on Sunday, over Labor Day weekend. The restaurant decor was very inviting, and the wall murals are a great touch. We're picky about our mexican food, so we were disappointed in the use of ground beef vs shredded beef in the dishes we ordered. The food was OK, but not the greatest New Mexico cuisine. After placing our order, we changed the order to "take out" because of the flies buzzing around the table. Our server was attentive, which was a plus.
