The food was fair but I was disappointed with the overall experience. The child's "chicken strips entree" came with 1 strip that might have been 3inches long and about 1/2 inch wide--it was tiny and cost $4.95, to add a side costs .99. The quesadillas looked good but the chicken quesadilla had veggies I didn't like listed in the menu so I asked for the veggies that came on the spinach quesadilla instead. The waitress said no problem and never mentioned a charge for substituting veggies. In addition, her attitude with us was on the verge of smarty. When I got my ticket, she had charged me for a spinach quesadilla and added a $6 charge for a chicken breast. I would recommend sticking to the McDonalds, Sonic, or Pizza Hut in this town so you atleast know what to expect in the way of price and portions.

My wife and I stopped by on our way to Flagstaff, AZ. Found Dels on yelp and based on the reviews, ate supper there. Place was crowded which is a good sign in any eatery. Wife had Mexican food, two chicken enchilladas which she declared were stuffed with vast amounts of chicken. She also had a chili rellano. She said everything was very good and has just commented that the salsa was excellent. I had two enchilladas, one ground beef and one cheese and two ground beef tac;os. Everything on my plate, like everything on the wife's was excellent. The meal was finished with sopapilla's and honey. A suitable ending to any mexican food meal. Would we eat there again? You betcha'.

If you are driving across I-40 in New Mexico, and you find yourself getting hungry near Tucumcari, Del's is your best chance to get something good to eat. Like many restaurants in the Southwest, they serve traditional American food and Mexican food. I usually eat the Mexican food, but the traditional American offerings are just as good. I have been there many times and have never had a bad meal. Furthermore, I had the best breakfast burrito that I have ever had at Del's. Good Restaurants across I-40 are scarce, so if you are driving that way, I would recommend planning to stop for a meal at Del's

I came here on the recommendation of the Motel 6 staff because I was loking for dinner to go that was not fast food. The restaurant was very quaint with it's case of vintage fishing tackle/lures and Pappy the Fortune teller (reminded me of that movie BIG). They also had a gift shop and a caase of old fashioned retro candy by the cash register. The waitress was very friendly and willing to help out- I got the baked Chimichanga for my husband and I tried the stuffed sopapilla on her recommendation- the sauce was very good with a nice kick, and the chicken was very tasty. My husband loved the chimichanga! I was a bit confused as to why they gave me an extra sopapilla and a fried looking thing (another kind of sopapilla??) I thought I was supposed to stuff the beans and rice in there or something- but then I saw the honey packets and realized it was a dessert /bread thing. i was full from the regular sopapilla, so my husband used the extra one to eat with his chimichanga sauce and beans. 4 stars are for the friendly people and great atmosphere- I would give a solid 3 for the food.

Not many choices in Tucumcari but for quick, VERY basic food served hot Del's is a good choice. Mexican and American menu, did not try the Mexican (other than the good fried ice cream if that counts). Salad bar included with most choices, bar was basic but fresh. Typical meal would be a grilled chicken breast with mashed (with white gravy) and a vegetable. Nothing adventuresome but what they do is fine. Sandwiches and burger also available plus the normal Mexican choices. No liquor license and takes credit cards but not AMEX.

We really enjoyed this clean and busy local diner that has been serving since the 1950s. The sirloin was succulent, baked potato perfect, and along with them came a very nice salad bar with homemade soup and beans. A real deal for about $10. Great pleasant service, very reasonable prices, and as we checked out all the delivered plates we could, it was evident that this is the real thing Americana diner. The burrito had to be 16 inches long and the customer whom I asked said he would highly recommend them. A gem!

This restaurant is fantastic. I am always skeptical eating Mexican food at a Mexican/American diner. Mexican food is my absolute favorite, and this is one of the best Mexican food meals I've ever had. I ordered the stacked green chile enchiladas and the first bite blew my mind. My boyfriend got a quesadilla and we immediately got a box for it, cause my meal was so delicious and such an incredible portion, we both shared and were stuffed. It was very reasonably priced, and came with beans and rice, chips, salsa, and sopapilla (sp) all included. The waitress was incredibly friendly and attentive. Can't speak for the rest of the menu, but definately worth the trip for the stacked green enchiladas.

Great food! Great service! Sat down for dinner, road-weary and craving Tex-Mex. We were definitely satisfied. I had the burrito and Collin had the beef chimichangas. The highlight was definitely the award-winning homemade super spicy salsa; We are both going home with jars of our own! Our server was warm, helpful and gracious. Our glasses were always full, whether it was water, soda or tea. Definitely a must visit on 66!

My family of four enjoyed eating here. Food was flavorful. Options were limited on the menu, so there wasn't as much to select from as we had originally thought there would be, but the salad bar was surprisingly good.

  • John K.

I had the chicken fried steak with fries. Delicious! That's primarily why I'm giving it the 4 stars. There were chips and salsa for the intro and they were fine. I mean, they're better than what I get at home in Northern Virginia, but they are better elsewhere in New Mexico (like Sadie's in ABQ or countless holes in the wall in N. Central NM). The salad bar is basically a salad kiosk and very, very sad to behold. The vegetables weren't exactly garden fresh, but not condemnable. The soups for the evening (chile cheese and pinto bean) were outstanding. The service was ok - outstanding for the area, unfortunately, but just ok in my book.

friendly staff and the chips and salsa were great. that's where the goodness stopped. i ordered a spinach and cheese quesadilla. the quesadilla was cold, the spinach was soggy, and i could barely detect the cheese. the whole thing was just very bland.

Great little diner in a sleepy little NM town on RT 66, modern and clean... Busy in the middle of the day, on the sleepy street

My wife and I stopped in Tucumcari for dinner tonight and turned to Yelp for recommendations. Del's fit our interests so we headed there. The "Maps" interface, however, led us to an empty lot about six blocks west of the actual location of the restaurant, so beware. I had Mexican food while my wife went with chopped sirloin with a baked potato. It was all very good - hot, well-prepared, and flavorful. Service was excellent and prices were reasonable. I would come back if the opportunity arises.

GREETING: Friendly and welcoming. We were seated right away. DRINK ORDER: Taken and served right away Me: Water - I know it's weird to rate water, but we all know water at some places aren't good. The water here is good. Wife: Iced Tea - Really good! FOOD ORDER: Taken and served right away and accommodating to our dietary restrictions. -Me/Wife (shared): Grilled salmon, baked potato (hold the sour cream) and vegetable medley. Passing through town and it was such a treat to have something that tasted like a delicious home-cooked meal. The grilled salmon was savory, the baked potato hot, soft and delicious and the veggies ... so good! SERVER: Friendly, accommodating, kept our drink cups full and checked in on us throughout the meal. CHECK: Brought out in no time flat. Pay for your meal at the counter. COMMENT: Clean restaurant, friendly staff, good atmosphere, delicious food and just an overall enjoyable experience! Would highly recommend to friends and will definitely return. Thank you!!

We drove cross country moving from CA to MO. We stopped in Tucumcari for the night just to stay at the Blue Swallow Inn. The town is very small and many businesses appeared to be vacant. It felt like we were in a deserted town so we got dinner recommendations from staff. Del's was one of the two she recommended. Del's had the best neon signage, which swayed my vote. I was on Route 66 after all. This place has a gift shop within the restaurant so you can pick up souvenirs if you need. We had a simple meal here. My meal came with the salad bar. There were options but not a ton of "green" ingredients or lettuce options. This is more of your iceberg or mixed salad with ranch sort of salad bar. Our waiter was cordial, but he definitely did not seem overly elated to be at work. I ordered the smothered chicken (10.99) because I just could not do any more beef. It is grilled and topped with peppers, mushrooms and Swiss cheese. I opted for a baked potato as the side. It was good - nothing noteworthy. Service was prompt. All in all, it was our best bet in Tucumcari. If you are in Tucumcari for the Blue Swallow Inn, then I recommend Del's as it is just a few blocks away.

We were traveling and asked the manager of our rv camp site where she would recommend some good New Mexican Mexican food. She didn't hesitate to tell us Del's, and it lived up to her recommendation. We were warmly greeted, seated and quickly got our drinks, fresh salsa and chips. We were exhausted from a 450 mile drive. Our meal was delicious, and our waitress, Andrea gave us great service! And part of your Mexican food plate comes with a large, hot delicious sopapilla!!! This is also one of the cleanest restaurants we've ever eaten at.

Eh- small town standard. Had the feeling everyone in the place could tell we were from out of town. Waiter had a very stand off approach to his service. I had the salad bar, which was good for the locatiin. Had a good selection of dressings, but lacked in every other area. My wife had a Relleno, it was funny hearing how the locals pronounced it- rAYAno..... funny. It's always fun to visit the different areas and see things which are the same but very different. The breading on the rAYAno was very different- almost like it was baked instead of deep fried- which was awesome! That was about the only really good thing we had. The salsa was homemade, but there was a very odd aftertaste- couldn't identify it. The beans were bland and cold, the rice was overcooked and bland. All in all, I was underwhelmed. I was hoping this would be a jem in a small town, fail.

A treasure from the route 66 of a bygone era! We had been traveling most of the day and had drifted in to Tucumcari to fill the gas tank and our tummies. The large bull sign out front caught our eye and pulled us in with it's faded fiberglass gaze. The food was what you would expect from a piece of Americana that has survived as long as it has, tasty and served fast and with a smile. If your passing through make a point to stop in for meal, oh and try the pie!

  • Janet S.

Had dinner there last night--- We wanted something healthy so had the soup n salad bar. The chicken with rice soup was the best I've ever had! The salad bar had enough choices to satisfy us. Will definitely come again, but next time will try the Mexican food. It looked great! Also loved my Riesling served in a big margarita glass! Heck, I don't care if they serve it in a mason jar, as long as they give me a lot. Waiter could have been friendlier...

Driving across I-40, it's not easy finding an excellent place to eat. We were fortunate to find Del's as our lunch was delicious, served by a wonderful waitress, and amazingly inexpensive. Tucumcari may become the place we aim for on our next trip thanks to Del's. I had a combo plate with an amazing chile relleno, a superb pork tamale, rice and beans. My wife had a grande burrito which she loved. Like many places in New Mexico, they served delicious spicy chile on each dish. Del's really made our day. We'll be back for sure.

Stopped with husband and daughter for lunch on a cross-country trip. Food is reasonably priced and the staff super friendly - especially our server Jackie who paid special attention to our daughter. She has a way of making people feel special. We ordered a mixture of American and Mexican along with the salad bar. All dishes were tasty and the ingredients were fresh. We didn't care for either of the soups today, but with so much food we didn't miss it. The warm sopapilla drizzled with honey - delicious! Definitely worth the stop if you're traveling route 40.

My entire family LOVED it! Every food item was excellent as well as the service. The place was packed, which attests to its popularity. We would go back in a heartbeat but was just passing through town on a cross country drive.

It really is a great place to eat. The food is delicious just as it says on the menu. Good price too. Small complaint if I may: older staff didn't take kindly to us for some reason. My family (husband & 1 year old child) and I were glared at by the older staff. No idea what that was about b/c my kid is exceptionally well behaved at restaurants. I would still recommend this place.

  • Rain C.

Our waiter gave us the cold shoulder almost all the way through dinner but, we kept making eye contact and telling him, "thank you," with a smile. By the end of our dinner he stopped grunting and started giving us one to three word answers. He was gruff but my husband and I thought it was endearing. Anyway, aside from that particular waitstaff, our dinner went well. It was hot & delicious! My husband's steak & baked potato were just how he liked them while the chicken quesadilla that I ordered was surprisingly hearty. Even though we were the only guests under the age of 70, the food was great and the waiter ended up waiving goodbye and smiling at us on our way out.

I'm torn between a 3 and a 4 on this- I think it would be a Tucumcari 4, but in a greater context it is more of a three. We were driving across the country on I-40 and stopped in Tucumcari for the night. This was one of the only places in the town that was open, and it was fine. The place was clean, but very quiet. Unfortunately they sat us in the back of the restaurant where there were almost no other people, while it appeared that the locals/regulars were seated in the more lively section of the house. The food was fine, not lighting the world on fire but it was edible and they had a few options for vegetarians which was nice and not easy to come by in rural NM. Our waiter, Paul, reminded me a bit of a young Steve Buscemi. Nothing overtly offensive or creepy- just gave you a slightly unsettled feeling.

  • Donald P.

Mixed. My ribeye was tender and delicious. But my wife's sirloin, ordered medium, was undercooked. Our server delivered her lukewarm apology in monotone: "The cook says he's sorry, okay?" Rather than preparing a new order properly, the kitchen took another crack with the microwave. Several minutes later, the meat was returned to our table, still undercooked and tough. We'd also ordered a bottle of wine. This was served in two margarita-style glasses, that smelled of tequila. We opted for a couple of small plastic glasses, instead.

Read the reviews and decided to stop and eat here during dinner on my drive from Albuquerque to Amarillo. Well I didn't find it at first because Yelp's directions to the restaurant are wrong (bad Yelp, lol) So had to manually put in address in Google Maps and was successful after doing so. This place shares a parking lot with Kix on 66 restaurant so there was plenty of parking space. Place is like a small town restaurant should be. It's got that nice side of the road eatery kind of feel to it. I already knew what I was going to order from reading the reviews. So I got seated as soon as I walked in by the host who sat me all the way in the back where it there were less people (maybe I looked like I was a little stressed out and needed some peace and quite?) Waitress was very nice and took my order. I ordered a medium-well Ribeye with a side of mash potatoes. My entree came with the soup and salad bar. The salad bar was small but everything looked and tasted pretty fresh. They had a choice of green chile stew or pinto beans. I got a small cup of the chile stew which was a little salty for my taste. The ribeye was cooked perfectly and had a lot of flavor! I also liked the mash with gravy which went very well with the ribeye. The warm soft dinner roll with butter was also good. I would definitely make another stop here next time I'm passing through Tucumcari!

I had the veggie fajitas here while passing through Tucumcari. My meal included the salad bar, which was decent. There were several dressing choices, and two soups to choose from. The fajitas came with four small tortillas, veggies (onions and peppers), shredded cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream, guacamole, and pico de gallo. Everything tasted pretty good, but the veggies were insanely greasy. There was literally a pool of grease at the bottom of my plate. It seemed like the veggies had been grilled in advance, refrigerated, and then reheated by frying them in (WAY too much) oil. Like I said, though, it all tasted good. It'd be great late night food after having some drinks. Due to the grease, I just wouldn't eat it all the time. I don't think my arteries could take it!

The roast beef was good, but not great. The brown gravy was really watery. Their salad bar is huge with a lot of variety. The cheeseburger soup was great! The staff was friendly except for the cashier.

Nice historic spot on historic rt66. Staff was friendly food was good and reasonably priced. I had the steak fajitas and I wasn't disappointed. Be careful with the free salsa though it's got some kick!

Not a lot of options in this tiny town on Rt 66 but this was rated as one of the best. We stopped here after driving in from Houston. We had 9 people in our group and the only table available for us was right in the entry way which made for a "grand central station" meets "zoo exhibit" dining experience. Lots of traffic and lots of states. It also made getting dedicated wait staff a challenge -- we waited and waited for refills, extra napkins, etc. The decor was old (not a bad thing, just something worth noting) but to be expected. The food was okay. Husband had a Mexican combo. Not the tex-mex we are used to but good (could have used a little more heat). Kids liked the chicken fried steak. All in all, a passable dining experience.

The lady at the hotel suggested this restaurant. I went in, and it had a certain charm. It is located on historic route 66, as alot of locations I tend to visit. There is a cool neon sign in the front. I was promptly seated. I knew it was prime rib night, but i'd never eat a prime rib. They have good specials, and it's worth checking out. I ordered the taco, and enchilada platter. The taco was really good, but the enchilada was a little small. Maybe I'm used to larger enchiladas. The rice was very good, but I didn't have enough of it. lol. I guess I'm truly used to larger portions. The waitress was amazing. She was informative and friendly. I really enjoyed eating there, and enjoyed the monstrous menu choices. I love the inside decorations. I'd totally suggest Del's to anyone.

This is now my "go to" place in Tucumcari, the food was excellent, salad bar exceptional and service great. On top of that the prices are reasonable, the staff friendly and decor as you would expect in a small town eatery. Great place, we will be back.

All four meals were perfect. The steak was done to perfection. The chicken livers outstanding and the sopapilla was very good and filling. The salad bar was filling and the soup was delicious. The staff was friendly and helpful. Highly recommend a stop here.

We had a great meal here, loved the green chili served in my quessadilla! Also really liked the service, we had the sweetest waitress ever. She seemed a little bit inconfident but she made up for it with her good heart and her ability to take care of people, she was the best!

We thought we were doomed because we had no internet and therefore no yelp to guide us when we pulled into Tucumcari. We stopped at Del's... and were so thrilled with our lunch! The food was excellent and the service was extremely friendly. Highly recommend if you're passing through!

We really enjoyed the food and the service was excellent! The menu had a wide variety and the sopapillas as dessert was a great addition to the Mexican portion of the menu. The chips and salsa were good as was the guacamole. It was a fun experience to eat right on historic Route 66!! It was just what we needed after a long day of driving.

We had a long, long drive both behind and ahead of us when we decided to stop in at this kitchy, probably-historic diner for a bite. After all, it's on Route 66, and it's still around, so it must be good, right? I'll agree that the decor was, authentic. And the staff was friendly and efficient. But, the food was....just barely there. I don't mean quantity, I mean flavor. The green chile stew was lacking in that unmistakable roasted green chile taste, and was pretty bland except for the salt. The chicken strips were cooked perfectly, but again, lacked flavor. I felt terrible for the sweet waitress who had served us; we left a lot of food behind, and I think she was a little embarrassed. I want her to know that we thought the place itself, and her in particular, were terrific. I just didn't groove on the food. I'm sorry...

WOW...REALLY GOOD!!!! Just a great little hole in the wall!! Kitchy authentic just simple relaxing fun!!! We had chicken quesadilla and a veggie quesadilla chips n salsa, then brought us sopapilas (not sure I spelled that right). Just really good comfort food... Don't miss it!

you came recommended from historic 66 down the street. I got food to go at the last minute, and was pleasantly surprized by the red chile! the heat builds and builds, and the portions? over the top. the pupusas were a nice touch too. the chicken crunchies? ooooh.... nice. all of your food was a plus. hit the spot, on a strip that made my vacation. yum.

On our way home from road trip vacation and stopped to eat. Tasty meal was had by all 3 of us, as taste buds were very different across the board. Salad bar was a bonus too.

Good Food and Great Salad Bar with lots to choose from including Soup! I'm sure that it has to be the Best Food in Town because there are not too many other choices for Restaurants in Tucumcari, NM!

So, we're driving from Chicago to Phoenix and stop in Tucumcari, NM for the night. After being cooped up in a car for many, many, many hours and after eating fast food we decided to go some place where we can sit. The signage on this restaurant has a cow on it so I knew going in that lots red meat would be on the menu. We walk in and are immediately greeted by a teenage boy who is also the host. We are also greeted by a lot of stares. Maybe it's because we're African American. Maybe it's because we were the youngest people in there. The average age was 60+. Maybe it's because we weren't overweight. It's 5:30 on a Wednesday and this place is packed. I was craving veggies or fish, anything light, but I went with the grilled chicken breast and mashed potatoes. The entree came with help-your-self salad and soup. I'll try not to be too much of a snob, but the "salad bar" consisted of ice berg lettuce, cucumber marinated in something, fruit salad smothered in some heavy stuff, carrots sitting in a bucket of water, canned beets, chopped broccoli, etc. The chicken was decent and not dried out and the mashed potatoes were smothered in gravy. The menu did NOT say mashed potatoes AND gravy. I gave Del's one extra star because the people watching was awesome and the staff hustled their butts off to attend to everyone.

Decor Ok, food not very good. Had their most popular item, the chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and gravy. It in fact was chicken fried gristle and very watery gravy. At least the salad bar was decent. Was here 20 years ago and enjoyed the meal then. Not so much this time. They had a help wanted sign posted in the window for almost every position in the restaurant. Maybe the old help actually ate some of their food.

Found Del's thru Yelp. Just passing thru town and was looking for a non-chain lunch place. Found a good alternative here. My wife & I both had the charburgers with green with green chilies. I had the fries, so-so, my wife had the onion rings, great. For us it filled the bill and is reviewed by AAA.

Nothing to write home about with this meal. I wasn't as hungry as my husband or friend, so I opted for the salad bar. Everything on the salad bar was fresh and it was well stocked for a smallish salad bar. The tomato macaroni soup was good, it reminded me of goulash. My hubby's chicken fried steak was good, not Texas CFS good, though. They call it their "signature" dish. The enchiladas were typical NM-style and okay. They bring out sopapillas for dessert - gratis. Anything drizzled with honey is tasty in my book, so a thumbs up from me for the sweet treat! I wish I could compare this restaurant to the Rockin Y Roadhouse, which was our second choice. The food may be average, for my big city standard, but it may be above average for the area. It's hard to say, but looking around the town, the pickings are slim. Edited to add: upon checkout I found that Del's, Rockin Y, and Kix on 66 are all owned by the same people. Seems to me they have a monopoly on food in this area so I would venture to guess that all these restaurants would have similar quality.

Stopped for overnight in Tucumcari, NM and tried Del's Restaurant. The food was delicious. Server was great and host was friendly. Very pleasant atmosphere. And on Route 66. Give it a try.

I feel kinda dumb for this one. I've been coming to/through Tucumcari, NM since 1996. I never stopped at Del's Restaurant, until tonight. Found it because? Yep, Yelp told me all about it. Arrived just after 8 pm, immediately seated and served a diet coke and chips/salsa. Not sure what some are saying with the chips/salsa, but they were great. I didn't "pay for them"....so maybe that's a different item? The meal? Beef Chimichanga with beans, rice, and a side salad. Shredded beef was cooked to perfection and the whole meal was temp perfect. Enjoyed some salsa on the rice and the two chimi's had a cheese/verde sauce on them. Excellent service went with the meal. Was a very reasonable $11 for the meal and $2 for a soda. Incl tax and tip, was out the door for under $18. Yes, most of that was tip. The sopapilla is the only item that wasn't top notch. But it was included in the price of the meal....so I didn't count it against them. I suspect it would be better earlier in the day. You know a place is doing something right when they have been open for 74 years. I will be back on my next trip through....which should be August. ;)

What a rip off. Ok, let me start by saying the food was very good and the service was fantastic. The amount of food you get for the price is Ridiculous! I ordered two bean burritos, comes with rice and lettuce. For $9.50 I was expecting rather large burritos. I guess I was expecting too much. They were the size of hot pockets. I also got a small order of guacamole ($5.00). It's was like two table spoons on a ton of lettuce, I'm guessing to make it look bigger. I've never seen guacamole served on lettuce. It's idiotic! I'm very displeased with this and I've only been once, but that's all it takes. I got hosed for $16 not including tip for a few morsels of standard American-Mexican food. Go to Taco Bell. You'll at least leave full and have money in your pocket!

A very pleasant surprise to tired travelers on Rt 66 in Tucumcari. Del's had a friendly staff and attractive comfortable interior. The menu was quite extensive with an interesting mix of American and Mexican dinners. The salad bar was fresh with a lot of different items. I had the angus ground beef steak that was quite tasty as we're the mashed potatoes.

We always stay at the hotel next door, and come to Del's for dinner on our trips to the Midwest. The menu has taken a turn towards more Mexican food as of late, but is still great. Twice ago, the service was stuck-up and rude (despite the 40% tip we left for three dinners). This latest time, the service was friendly and quick. We ordered to-go, because of the lack of beverage choice (see: alcohol). The order came quick, and had everything we needed. My dad has been getting the chicken-fried steak here for years - maybe decades. The last two times, I got the loaded nachos. They were happy to substitute beef for chicken. My to-go had a huge side of chips and salsa, as well as a sopapilla - my dine-in order had endless chips, but no sopa. We'll continue to eat here, 1-4 times a year.

First of all, let me just say that three stars is not an insult, it's "A-OK". And that is what my dining experience was at Del's. I had dinner there on a Wednesday night. Del's was busy with what looked like quite a few locals and people who know each other. A great thing about small towns. I was seated quickly and my drink came quickly (glass of water). I was hoping for a glass of wine after a long day on the road, but Del's doesn't serve wine. That's okay. They were out of all steak except the ribeye, not what I was there for. So I had the ground steak wrapped in bacon. The bacon presence was minimal, and had I not seen the menu I would not have realized that was bacon. Nevertheless, it was good and cooked as ordered and it hit the spot. The fries were a little odd. I didn't eat them all. The salad bar was minimal, but had some of my favorite things that I rarely ever get to eat: pea salad! The service was very friendly by a nice young lady, probably late teens. If I get the opportunity to return, I would like to try a steak. Restaurants with fiberglass cows out front should have seriously good steaks. Hopefully I will return, and if so, will update my review here. Overall, a good dinner!

On a recent move from Los Angeles to Georgia we stopped here for lunch. I had the red chile pork enchiladas, which were cheese enchiladas covered with red chile sauce with ground pork in it, then topped with a fried egg. A spicy scrumptious mess. They fry their own tortilla chips, too, wafer thin. Our waitress was super friendly. Overall, very impressed!

I really like this place. Good service, fresh salad bar. My son had the Mexican plate enchiladas the sauce was so new Mexico ! I had the chicken fried steak as many people soke about on yelp, it was really good but diet bad. The veggies were grilled which I loved, can't believe they were grilled. I shall return.

I'll give it a 3, but that is taking into account its friendly staff, and less emphasis on the food, which is probably good enough for this rural area. My Mexican dish was too hot, in both kinds of ways, which made it impossible to taste. The frijoles refritos and spanish rice were sub-par too. My favorite thing was the loose pinto beans at the salad bar. My dining partner had roast beef which he said was good.

"The Ketchup was Really Good" Bucks the trend of oversized portions: The chips and salsa comes in a salad bowl. Can't quite decide what it wants to be: menus is mostly Mexican with outliers like liver and onions and sweet tea. My spouse reflected, "the Ketchup was really good." Then she added, "make sure they know it's Hunts, not home made." Decor is western meets retro. Our server was friendly, but not enough for me to recommend or to return.

With little options in Tucumcari we expected a so-so dinner. The staff called this the best restaurant in town and that might be so - it's a modern day ghost town with very few options. This place would never survive in my neck of the woods.

Had a great chicken enchilada with rice and beans here. The red enchilada sauce was homemade and tasty with a little kick to it. Best part was a hot sopapilla (kind of a fried dough desert) with honey to finish things off. FYI - No alcohol served.

Ok, this is the second time in two weeks I have been in Tucumcari, but my first experience eating here at Del's. I had the chicken fried steak and was impressed. Coating was very light and heavy as it is others. Very impressed with food and service. I will be back in this area two more times this summer on business and I have a feeling that I will be back for a return visit.

We stopped here on a trip across the country in August. Del's in on classic Route 66 and is surrounded by really interesting looking retro hotels, a few other restaurants, and some abandoned buildings. It's all very retro Route 66 as is Del's. My husband and I both ordered the chicken fried steak with gravy. The dinner was around $15 and included both soup and salad and a choice of sides (we went for the baked potatoes)--it was a lot of food. I discovered that I am not that fond of chicken fried steak. My husband liked his but there was too much breading for me and once I started eating it I realized that it's a terrible way to treat a steak. Maybe this is meal that only a guy can love? If I were to go again I would order the enchiladas. The salad bar was basic but very fresh, clean, and well maintained (and the lettuce was crisp). The soup was fine--it was a vegetable beef and tasted homemade. Next to the salad bar they also had things to add to your baked potato, like scallions, bacon bits, shredded cheddar cheese, sour cream, etc. The atmosphere was very casual and the dining areas had an old-fashioned look (reminds me of places my grandparents took me when I was a kid in the seventies, but in a good way). The service was good, efficient and friendly. There were a lot of European clientele because, and I'm just guessing here, Europeans are flocking to old Route 66 due to the movie Cars (or maybe there's a European fascination with Americana?). You will not get gourmet food here but you will get good food and a lot of it, value, and a comfortable sojourn into Americana. I would happily return to Del's Restaurant if I am ever again in the area...but I'd stay away from the chicken fried steak cause I'm just not man enough for that.

For the love all things holy, if you eat meat (and you prob'ly do, if you're entering a restaurant with a giant cow topping its sign), you simply MUST get the char-broiled burger with cheese and top it with New Mexico's deliciously addictive green chile! The menu doesn't exactly offer green chile as a topping, but if you've ever been to NM, you know those red and green chiles are so ubiquitous, it's likely you could top an ice cream sundae with them. Service at Del's is friendly, but if you're a stranger to the area and don't like being the center of attention, you might be briefly uncomfortable as the locals appraise you and your not-from-hereness. Nothing a pile of green chili can't cure, though...

I've had lunch here twice (once in November and again today). Both times the food and service were fantastic. My two lunches consisted of tasty tacos and stuffed sopapillas. Both were delicious and somehow I managed to clean my plate both times (if you know their serving sizes, you'd understand). The fact that I did finish them completely speaks to the quality of the meals; they were both soooo good, I just couldn't stop until I had finished. Highly recommended, even if you're just passing by.

Drove across the country with the family and ate a a lot of places. We intentionally stayed away from chains. Majority of the restaurants were lacking, either so so food or not so great service. Del's had great food and service. I ordered the Roast Beef and Gravy. It was awesome!! It was true home cooking. It came with a salad bar and I thought it was going to be the average salad fix'n, it wasn't. The produce was nice and fresh. I didn't expect that in the middle of nowhere. The wife ordered a mexican plate with a chile relleno and enchilada. The chile was a bit small so without asking the plate had a second chile. Only thing that could have been better was if the kids quesadilla had more cheese, other than that it was perfect.

Tried the chicken fried steak, which was pretty good. Unfortunately, the mashed potatoes were cold and bland and the gravy while also bland did help heat the mashed potatoes. Atmosphere wasn't bad, plenty of Rt 66 souvenirs.

I have never attempted a cross country car trip before so when it was time to do the planning I left it to the pro. The sig-o has braved the transcontinental journey at least twice. We left San Diego bound for a small town about an hour away from the East Coast in South Carolina. When I looked at his itinerary I saw our first stop was in Flagstaff, Arizona. So far so good. Then I glanced at the second day and saw we would end up in Tucumcari, New Mexico. Even Eric Yang the last winner of the National Geographic Bee couldn't identify this place on a United State map. Plus the name sounds like something that would would garner a ruler to the hand if you said it out loud in a church. But I digress. We checked in to our hotel with the goal to find some dinner. I fired up both Yelp and TravelAdvisor hoping to find a gem in the rough. We ended up deciding to go to Del's Restaurant which offers a mix of American and Mexican fare. The reviews seemed favorable enough but since I had already seen what the Tucumcari Hospital looked like, I knew if we got food poisoning we were in for a long night. We were quickly seated and there seemed to be a legion of servers roaming about the restaurant. I have become accustomed to only seeing unsweet iced tea west of the Mississippi River so when I ordered an iced tea and the waiter said "sweet or unsweet" I just about passed out. We decided to order from the Mexican side of the menu as penance for eating hamburgers on Cinco de Mayo plus the fact that we were in Tex-Mex country. I had the the enchiladas and a taco and the sig-o ordered the beef chimichangas. The salsa and chips was just ok. The salsa wasn't spicy enough for me. The rice and beans were good but nothing to get excited about. The enchiladas and chimichangas were very good (make sure to get the salsa verde, very tasty). The highlight of the meal was the sopapilla at the end. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by the food here and would go back. Service was also good. Hopefully this review helps any other tired and hungry traveler who stops in Tucumcari, New Mexico with the same concerns I had.

Friendly staff, many people eating and enjoying their giant chicken fried steak with a brown gravy that did not appeal to me at all. I decided to go with an all time favorite of mine a chimichanga. It came out and it was not deep fat fried. Chimichanga (pronounced /tmitæ/; Spanish: [timitaa]), also known as chivichanga or chimmy chonga is a deep-fried burrito that is popular in Southwestern U.S. cuisine, Tex-Mex cuisine, and the Mexican states of Sinaloa[1] and Sonora.] The dish is typically prepared by filling a flour tortilla with a wide range of ingredients, most commonly beans, rice, cheese, machaca, carne adobada, or shredded chicken, and folding it into a rectangular package. It is then deep-fried and can be accompanied with salsa, guacamole, sour cream and/or cheese. I asked why it was seemingly just a burrito and not a chimichanga they acted like they never heard of such a thing "a deep fried burrito land o goshen." It was ok but nothing to write home about. The beans were not so great either. I wish I could travel and find food that equals what I can make at home someday. The dessert sopilla was good and light.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
