This place is unforgettable. We stayed in the fall, when the leaves were bright yellow, and thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful grounds, the clean, quiet, atmosphere, and the amazing breakfasts. The afternoon snacks were delicious, too. We stayed in the Ansel Adams room, and slept soundly after a day of exploring, a delicious dinner, and a warm fire in the kiva fireplace. The staff was friendly, helpful, but unobtrusive, and the common areas were inviting and well-maintained. Everything was perfect.

I wanted so very much to like this place, because of its arty history and seemingly creative vibe. I liked the main public spaces and the breakfast was out-of-this-world phenomenal. But our guest room was a tremendous disappointment. We stayed in the Austin Room, which was described in basic terms on the website. What it should have said was that this room was immediately next to the office. That the bathroom was separated from the manager's office by a wall of papered-over windows and we could hear everything in the office (and presumably they could hear everything in the bathroom, too -- totally awkward!). That the room was immediately next to the main public pathway and the lace curtains on the windows wouldn't give you an iota of privacy. That the floorboards were so shaky that the bedside lamp would fall off the table when you walked by. That 2 radiators could not be shut off and it would be so stifling hot that I wouldn't be able to sleep. I highly recommend that if you are going to stay here to call and speak to a staffer about the rooms to get better info than the website offers. Otherwise, you may end up disappointed, too.

My mom and I stayed here last month. The house was very very cool and the rooms were nice and relaxing. This is a retreat, so there were no TVs or Wifi in the rooms, but no matter because we didn't go to Taos to watch TV, and there was Wifi in the main house. The staff was very nice and helpful, we had a problem with our room and they went above and beyond when it came to fixing said problem. The breakfast was delicious and it fun meeting different people. A lot of famous and interesting people have stayed there and it was cool to stay somewhere that was historical.

On my very first trip to NM, my friend and I traveled around to Taos and decided to stay at this house, mainly because it had ties to Georgia O'Keefe. We arrived in the evening and went up to the main house to register. The house was charming and creaky and there were multiple sitting rooms with fireplaces. Our room was in another building adjacent to the main. Upon entering into the room, it was sparse and quaint. However, when we were sleeping the winds howled like banshees. Unfortunately, there was no hair dryer in the room nor a tv to drown out the banshee noises. Each morning, breakfast was offered in the main room. The breakfast was this incredible spread -- different every day. Fresh fruit, coffee, juice, cereal, eggs.... it was above and beyond the normal continental breakfast at usual B&Bs. Our only grip was the next day, my friend notice an ant infestation in our room. We were immediately given another room to stay in which was fine as well. The staff was very hospitable and accommodating.

A fascinating quirky sprawling old house, rich with history. Originally the home of Mabel Dodge Luhan who was a New York socialite that married a full-blooded Navajo, together they built this house next to the Indian lands, and introduced many famous writers, artists, and photographers to Taos as well as hosting them in her own home for extended periods -- Georgia O'Keefe, DH Lawrence, the list is nearly endless. The house has been lovingly preserved and now hosts many retreats and workshops as well as individuals. Exceptionally friendly staff, awesome breakfasts, easy walking distance to many restaurants and shops and the Plaza. I can't imagine a better place to stay in Tao, but... If you are a fan of luxury accommodations with room service and TVs and telephones - this is not the place for you. There is no one around at night except the guests and the atmosphere is quite relaxed -- you can go to the living room in the evening, build your own fire in the fireplace, and read, daydream, or do your email. Simply unique, not to be missed, experience the Old Taos.

This is by far my favorite place to stay in Taos. History, nature, peace and quiet plus a great breakfast every morning. That said, this place is obviously not for everyone. It has a bohemian vibe. The furniture in the rooms don't match. There are no televisions or phones in the room (although many come with authentic kiva fireplaces). If you have a problem with a bit of dirt here & there, this place is probably not for you. Same goes for bugs. It's historic, & it's in nature. Who needs a television set? It's a place to escape from all the modern crap that stresses us out & to sink into the wondrousness that is Taos.

I have been coming to the Mabel Dodge Luhan House since the mid 1990s. I never fail to enjoy the wonderful breakfast, the smart, charming people who the house seems to attract, or the equally charming staff most of whom are well versed in the history of the Taos, as well as Mabel and Tony Luhan and their artistic and literary friends. The house is quiet and feels remote--from the windows of the newer extension I could see the sun rising over the mountains and wild dogs running thru the fields. But, on the other hand, it is an easy walk to the plaza and downtown galleries. As mentioned, it is not for everyone. If you are used to the sterile, airless, chemical filled environment of the big hotel chains, you may not appreciate the quiet charm and beauty of this former residential home that hosted friends like Ansel Adams, Georgia O' Keefe, Freida and D H Lawrence, Willa Cather, Millicent Rogers, Marsden Hartley and others. I always feel as though I am stepping into a vanished world when I stay here and could as easily be existing in the year 1925 as the year 2012. If you are a romantic, creative person, you will most probably love this B&B and, like me, want to return over and over.

This is a review for both the Mabel Dodge Luhan House and for the Point Zero intuitive painting course with Michele Cassou which takes place there twice a year. First the lodgings: On the positive side, this is a lovely historic B&B in the heart of Taos. The food is wonderful. On the down side, the staff is not especially friendly and many of the mattresses seem to be as antique as the house. Many people at the workshop who stayed here complained about this. (However, if you sign up for the course, you do have the option to stay elsewhere in Taos, which I would recommend.) As for the course, the experience of painting all day for several days in an intuitive and playful way, with support and encouragement, is fantastic. However, having taking this course twice now, I will not be returning, because they are booking too many participants (in the neighborhood of 40 people, which is far too many for the space). I am not especially claustrophobic, but feeling packed in like a sardine in both the studio and the dining room, and constantly bumping into people when walking over to the paint table, etc., detracts significantly from the experience. There are other intuitive painting courses out there....
