We really enjoyed our meal here. Came across Tia Sophia's for a late lunch while wandering the Plaza. We were greeted and seated immediately, ordered quickly (it's not a huge menu), and had our food in minutes. We both got chicken enchiladas, green chile, and we both thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Our morning adventures in Santa Fe had left both of us in a contemplative mood, and that led to us lingering in our cozy booth long after we finished eating. It wasn't until we happened to glance at the menu that we realized they were actually closed for the day, and had been closed for a while. (They only serve breakfast and lunch, and close at 2). No one had mentioned this to us or made us feel rushed at all, even though we must have walked in just minutes before 2. We of course apologized (we felt badly, keeping the staff there after closing), and they couldn't have been nicer about it. I'd definitely recommend this place for a quick, reasonably priced and delicious meal.

Sopapillas!! So New Mexican food is not Mexican food... the green chile you find in these parts is not chile verde you find in my parts (California). So when you order here you are treated to a wonderful delight. We stopped in for lunch with our son while visiting this pretty city. My husband had the Artriso and I the Chalupa's. The green chile here is so good, spicy but good! My chalupa's were a disappointment, I was thinking flautas but got two small tortilla cups, weird and just ok. But the best thing were the Sopapillas, described here or elsewhere as Indian bread. So yummy to sop up the green chile or to eat with honey. I would definitely come back here again, the food and service were great. Kid friendly too, they have a huge selection of books for the kiddies to look through and/or read.

2nd trip to Tia's. We are locals. Food was just mediocre. Taco had one half of a shell. The waitress never came by to ask about the meal or refills of ice tea. When dining partner asked for her remaining tea to be put in a carry out, she flat out screamed no! She then went to another table and chatted up with her boyfriend. Well folks there are better, more friendly dining spots, with better green chile and classy service that is less expensive than Tia's. Asta la Vista Tia. Won't be spending my money there nor will my friends. Actually if the nasty waitress had not been in existence, the experience may have warranted a return. Manager, screen your folks! :-(

Stopped in here for breakfast and then lunch. For breakfast, 8AM, the place was packed so sat at the counter. Had huevos rancheros and a good cup of coffee. Seemed like all locals at the counter and struck up a conversation with a 75 year old local woman who comes here every morning for breakfast. My huevos rancheros were very good. Brought S.O. back here for lunch. I had a shredded beef stuffed sopapilla w/ red chili and S.O. had chicken enchillada w/ green chili. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and thought it was yummy. Did not experience the 'soupiness' mentioned in other reviews. Now our pinto beans came on the side (in a bowl), and so yes, they were a little soupy, I guess. The price is right, the food is good. Very friendly. Oh, and they have cinnamon sugar as well as honey on the table for the sopapillas - which were light and airy.

Great authentic little eatery, with fantastic customer service. Curious about what each menu item is, or the heat level? When we asked, we were provided with samples of each item to ensure that we would be pleased with what we ordered. And the sopapilia (sp?) served with lunch was a great way to end the meal! Definitely a must stop eatery while in downtown Santa Fe.

We came here at the end of our trip and I wish we'd come here sooner - we got the huevos rancheros and it was the most delicious version of that dish I've ever had. I could barely find the eggs smothered in a sea of beans, red and green chile sauces and that was fine with me. Delicious.

Had lunch here after being told it's where the locals eat. We both had the cheese enchiladas "Christmas" style, with both red and green chili sauce. They were excellent, served with a side of whole pinto beans and a sopapilla the size of a breadbox. The guacamole salad tasted like processed avocados so I would avoid that. Server was efficient and friendly. Very reasonably priced too. For authentic Santa Fe chili sauce this is the place.

Hands down, the best breakfast burritos in the ENTIRE WORLD!! Living in San Diego, I rarely get to enjoy one of their big fat burritos smothered in cheese and green chile, but when I'm in town. . . . watch out. Erg, I wish I could have one right now.

Well, Diegos gave everyone salmonella poisoning so I switched up my routine a little. I've always been a Tia's fan, but tried to avoid it mostly as a local because it's in the Plaza and we all know what it's like being a local trying to dine at local plaza haunts. I always love going in and having Carl wait on me. He has remembered me since I was 15. The Heuvos x-mas are divine and sitting at the bar with a cup of coffee is sure to ease you into any Santa Fe day. Locally owned and not by some douche bag, but by a pretty cool family. Only problem is they close at 2pm so don't be a late sleeper!

We asked a waitress at another restaurant to tell us where the locals go and this was one of her recommendations. We visited several restaurants during our week stay and this one was our second favorite. The server was very friendly and the food was good. No complaints about this lovely, homey spot. Seat yourself and flag a server, then sit back and relax! Our full party was in-and-out as each of us took turns trying to find the car and add money to the meter, but they took it in stride. We made it easy as we each just ordered a soup, and those were out on the table in minutes. The green chile stew was absolutely fabulous- exactly what I needed as I was under the weather and just about to keel over. Spice level enough to wake up my tastebuds, hot chunks of potato, and shredded beef in a wonderful thick broth. My two friends had green and red posole and said they were also excellent. The sopaipillas they brought with the food were too greasy to finish, but the price was great. A bit funny at the end when it took us a good 6 or 8 minutes to realize we had to pay at the register in front while all the staff took their lunch break at the booth just behind us! We saw a great mix of tourists and locals coming in and out, which to me is a very good sign. The menu's very standard, but sometimes that's all you want. Yum.

The food was ok, and that is the only reason why I'm putting any stars on this review. The service was very poor! This place was highly recommended by a friend to try the breakfast green chile burrito. I ordered and asked for extra tomatoes, no potatoes. I never got my tomatoes, despite her telling me that she was going to bring it to me. She also told me that I should get the red sauce because the green sauce would be too hot for me. My husband's coffee ran out and we had to ask several times for the creamer, we finally flagged someone else to get it for us. I really wish the service was better, this is so unlike any restaurant here in Santa Fe. I love the restaurants here and the people here, but this was an exception and a total disappointment. I hope the owner/manager reads this and improve the services

Green Chili stew is like no other. Hands down, the best I have ever had. Locals state that this is a breakfast place, not sure on that note, but the lunch menu is solid. If I lived in the neighborhood, I would eat here everyday. Although, the cash register seems to be a hangout for employees. Yawn, they were rude. Hence 3 stars for the attitude.

Simple, unassuming new mexican. Friendly staff, busy as hell at lunch, but tables turn over quickly. They make their red chile from pod, green chile just like *your* tia used to make. I almost always get the sopapilla stuffed with beans and rice and smothered. Hits the spot.

I loved this place! It was humble and homey and the staff was super warm. I saw one staff member go out to check on a customer's parking meter, then continued to sit next to him to chat for a moment (the customer was obviously a regular). Our breakfasts were hearty and standard.

Wow that was tasty! Had the small combo: chili rellenos and enchiladas with green AND red chili, also comes with a warm sopapilla. Flavors were perfect, not too much heat. Wonderful, homey grub. Had the combo platter of enchilada (you can request blue corn tortilla), green chile stew, and pozole. A big basket of sopapillas accompanied all our meals, to be eaten with honey, sprinkled with cinnamon sugar or dunked into the stew -- it's that versatile.

So my wife and I are at the courthouse, and we just got our marriage certificate. We find out that the actual ceremony part won't be until after lunch when the judge gets in. We set out in search of a place to grab some lunch. A couple blocks away is a tiny little place hiding in the adobe jungle that is downtown Santa Fe called Tia Sophia's. We must have gotten there at exactly the right moment, because immediately afterward the place completely packed and there was quite a wait. We sit down and the waiter comes up. After the obligatory niceties we tell him we are getting married. You wouldn't know this by looking at us. I'm wearing my best shorts, my bride-to-be is in her favorite jeans and a t-shirt, and we are set to elope. The waiter says the judge is just a couple of seats down from us. You probably care about the food. It's great, fantastic even. It's so good that it's worth trying to figure out where to park. It's even good enough that you don't have to think twice about going there. Everything both of us had was fantastic. The service was good too. They seem to have a really good sense of humor and that makes a lot of difference. A little bit later the judge comes to our table. Since we were eloping, we half joked asking if we could just get some witnesses and have him marry us in the restaurant. He laughed and said to just come to the courthouse early so he could go leave early and go golf. The wedding went off without a hitch, and we had some good memories from the great meal, awesome staff, and generally happy people there.

When looking over the menu outside of Tia's, someone held the door for us and said, "This is the place." It does seem to draw locals, and have a strong following. The decor is cute, and the hostess was very friendly, and let us choose our seat. However, I did have some misgivings. Our waitress answered some of my questions about vegetarian items, but seemed to lose her patience throughout the meal. And, the food was "soupy", in that the plates sat in a pool of water, or bean juice, that made the meal less-appetizing. The huevos rancheros were good, minus the "soupy" base, and you can't go wrong with sopapillas and honey to end a meal. Two plates for $20 with tip for lunch. Check it out, order well.

Perfection--breakfast perfection. Plain and simple. The green chili is so smooth, I wouldn't mind having an IV of it. Ouch! ...but that would sting oh so good. I hate waiting. Hate it. Best breakfast we had while there. In a town full of tourist traps and over priced, mediocre food, Tia Sophia's is a gem. They have a great breakfast menu of south west style cooking. The green chili is excellent and their salsa has all the heat you want without killing the flavor. There are even delicious option for those with a less adventurous pallet and just want a pancake breakfast. You know a place is worth going to when the locals are willing to brave the throngs of tourists to get a meal.

I was vacationing in Santa Fe and came here on the Yelp recommendations and was glad I did (yelpers come through once again!). The food was nothing short of delicious, the ambiance: charming, the service: incredible. Located within walking distance of the Plaza (very short walking distance), the location is prime--so much so that I feared overpriced ho-hum tourist grub. Thankfully, that was NOT the case. I ordered their chili rellenos and was delighted; they were hands down the best chili rellenos I've had the pleasure of eating. My dining companion ordered enchiladas and was entirely satisfied. They served sopapillas with our meal, which I love (and these seemed particularly fabulous). And, more importantly, I adore cinnamon with my sopapillas and they actually had some at our table! (I say this because, honey seems to be the preferred topping--which all the restaurants I visited had available at each table, and this is fine--but I prefer cinnamon and this was the only restaurant I visited that had it at each table--Love that!) The service we received was friendly and prompt. The prices are completely reasonable. I believe we left after spending less than $25. Awesome! Potential draw backs: limited hours. Only open for breakfast and lunch. Also, no booze (which, I realize is linked with the limited hours--but I LOVE a margarita with my lunch!). Overall: Delicious. Get to it!

We had high hopes for Tia Sophia's. The wait is long, it's clearly a popular place. However, the service was terrible and the food was just okay. I don't know if we had an "off" experience (I'd like to assume as much), but I won't be going back. I had the huevos rancheros. It was watery and not very substantial. The guy at the front took drink orders of the people next to us before us, even though we'd been sitting there for 10 minutes and they'd just sat down. We had to go up to the front to have anyone pay attention to us. Then we our order came, they gave me yellow corn torillia instead of blue corn. Overall, very disappointing.

I know my Yelp profile says "Mountain View, CA" but I am a native of New Mexico (I grew up in Los Alamos), so I know my New Mexican-Mexican food. Tia Sophia's completely and absolutely hits the spot. The menu is concise and unassuming. You may curl your lip at not having enough of a selection, but what they do here, they do well. In my opinion, they do particularly well the STUFFED SOPAIPILLAS! It's a savory rendition of a sopaipilla, stuffed with seasoned meat and cheese with a side of rice, beans, lettuce and tomato. You don't even need to think about it, just order it and eat it. Their daily specials are also hard to beat--you just can't go wrong with it. All their entrees come with a fresh, fluffy, hot sopaipilla you can drizzle with honey (like a bonus dessert with your entree!). Service is prompt and friendly, and despite a small crowd of people waiting outside to be seated, we were in the restaurant eating yummy food in no time. Oh, and order it with "green."

Zoinks, Scoob! This place is delicious. We came here for breakfast, although I believe they also serve lunch. A friend of mine from Santa Fe, upon hearing that I was visiting the city, immediately said, "You MUST eat breakfast at Tia Sophia's!" No mention of the museums, galleries, natural landscape... all he wanted me to do was have a breakfast burrito, Christmas style. Now I understand why. The breakfast burritos are large, filling, and enormously satisfying. The red and green chile sauces were to-DIE-for and the burrito contained hash browns, egg, and your choice of meat (I chose sausage, but heard bacon was fabulous as well). The only disappointing part is that I don't live in Santa Fe and have no reason to return, thus the breakfast burrito will haunt my dreams for years to come. The staff is awesome (very nice, quick, helpful) and even the ICE is good here (crushed, very frosty). If you visit Santa Fe and don't come here, you lose. It's just that simple.

Another quick stop on the Plaza, we ran into Tia Sophias for a quick lunch. I loved the atmosphere, a small little mom and pop shop right in the middle of everything. Tia Sophias is a delicious stop for affordable and quick food during lunch. There was no line but plenty of people there. I had the cheese enchiladas with red chile (less spicey than the green chile here). I didn't care for the red sauce as much as the green, but they were still pretty good. My husband had the enchiladas and green chile stew. He really enjoyed the stew and enchiladas, both which were just spicy enough. We were both excited to see the amazing sopapillas that came with our meals. I think it's safe to say they are the best I have ever had. Large, puffy, fluffy sopapillas served with DIY cinnamon sugar and honey. It was a large basket of them and we certainly got our fill from this meal for under $20. I would definitely come back, if for nothing else but the dessert! Yum.

Just thinking of this quintessential New Mexican establishment makes me want to move back to Santa Fe so I can eat here every morning. My mom lived in Santa Fe for 20 years, so I love going back for the food. I like red chili, but I LOVE green. We stoped into Tia Sophia's for lunch on a Tuesday afternoon. For a party of 5, we got sat very quickly. The hostess, waiter, and cashier were super friendly, the food was delicious (got the Atrisco plate -- posole, green chile stew, beans, and cheese enchilada--Christmas style). The sopapilla was the best. It was kid friendly, without feeling adult unfriendly. I highly recommend.

Best Breakfast Burrito in town. My favorite is Sausage/Green, but make sure you tell them you want egg, cuz it doesn't come that way. They also make the closest version of my Grandma's enchilada's, and that's the best compliment I can give. Grandma's were the best!!

If you like your breakfast served cold, this is the place. Yesterday my wife and I stopped in to Tia Sophia's for breakfast on our last day in SF. I ordered the "American breakfast" which is eggs, bacon and a pancake. When it arrived, the eggs, bacon and pancake were all barely warm - slightly above room temperature. My wife's fried eggs and potatoes were a little warmer, so I assumed that my was done 1st and they waited to bring them out together. When I complained to the waiter he said ok, I'll "warm them up" at which point I told him I would rather not have re-warmed eggs and pancake, could he please redo them. He said he would see what the kitchen can do. 5 minutes later he came out with a stiff, obviously (barely) reheated pancake and eggs ( the bacon was by now cold). I called the manager over and explained the situation, fully expecting him to be surprised, apologize and redo my breakfast. Instead, he told me that "with the high altitude, it is a constant battle keeping food hot!! I told him that this was our 8th day in SF and the other dozen restaurants we had visited didn't seem to have that problem ( Tomasita's, Maria's , the Shed, The Pantry, Bobcat bites all served steaming hot food!) He then said, incredibly, that he could try again but that it would probably be the same!! I left my pancake and eggs untouched. Less you think I'm just an impossibl e customer, notice that I've yet to rate any restaurant on Yelp less than 3 stars With all of the OUTSTANDING restaurants in SF, unless you're stuck on the Plaza, without a car, drive the few minutes to the Pantry or Tecolote Cafe. That is, unless you like a cold breakfast

I am a tourist. Popped into Tia Sophia's for lunch based on a recommendation from a local. It's a homey little place, crowded and lively. We got seated in a booth right in front, had our drink order taken right away, and only had to wait a few minutes before she came to take our food order with a smile. The food, though. I was raised in California. I know I shouldn't judge this New Mexican food by the same standards as California food. But I judge. So let me ask. Why is every plate in this town a sludge bath of watery chile and soupy beans? They slap a dish down with pride, and somewhere in that undifferentiated plasma is the enchilada you know you ordered, a taco you can gingerly pick out from the bath it's in, while everywhere is the same melted cheese, green or red goo, bean broth, and a need to repress the comparison with the way it's going to look exiting you later. Anyway, if you like New Mexican food, this is probably good stuff. If you were raised in a culture where individual foodstuffs are separate and identifiable and not always semi-liquid, you may hesitate before diving in. Their menu charmingly disclaims all responsibility for serving you a chile too hot. That sounded promising. I generally take things habanero hot when I can get it. I asked which was hotter, green or red chile. They said green. I ordered green. I'm sorry. You could put that in a baby bottle with no ill effect. Also, isn't there supposed to be a flavor as well as a color? I feel like someone who really likes heat in their chile should carry a bottle of Sriracha rooster sauce around Santa Fe as backup. But the service was quick and sweet, the atmosphere was unpretentious, the prices were reasonable, and the location right next to the Plaza is super convenient. I've eaten at a few other local places by now, and I think, in terms of this sort of food, Tia Sophia's compares well. Also, the sopaipillas were perfectly delicious, could have been a meal in themselves, and if I were to go back in a moment of desperation, I think I would get this stuffed sopaipilla everyone here is Yelping about.

I'd avoid this place. Its filthy, our waitress was borderline antagonistic, out toast was brought out before the rest of the meal and it sat there and got cold. When the breakfast was brought, my eggs were cooked wrong, and both plates of food were cold. There are much better places in town for breakfast.

Admittedly I was a day-tripper. But, I was visiting local friends who steered us here for lunch on a holiday weekend, as an alternative to the too-crowded Shed. After a relatively short wait spent on the sidewalk ogling all the "cowboys" from Dallas, we were seated at a spacious table near the window and received prompt, attentive service. Ambiance is casual, local flavor without pretension. Food is the real deal and you can't go wrong with anything. I loved the green chile stew but unless you're a real wimp, it's not particularly hot. I prefer more of a burn. It might not be the best New Mexican in SF but its a damn good runner-up.

We went here over July 4th weekend - on Yelpers reviews... Very Nice! The place was packed, the line was long, but went fast - we went on Sat around 10am... The BF had Huevos Rancheros with green chile - I had a bite - very tasty... I had the breakfast "hand held roll" with sausage, egg, cheese and potatoes - also very hearty, but had to eat with a knife and fork - so much for hand-held - it was Huge! The waitress recommended the blueberry pancakes over the sweet roll and I wasn't disappointed. Overall very nice and super cheap ;-)

Our first time here we left thinking the tacos had crack in them because they were sooo good...however I'm thinking that was because we were so hungover... Having lunch there today this was if at all an average meal... They don't serve chips and salsa, but you can order them for $7...what??? Thats a bit much for chips and salsa... Tia Sophia's is a unique place, you will not find another place like it. This is the place to go to have breakfast! And if you time it right (about 10:30) you can have a huge (and best ever) breakfast burrito, then when they start making sopapillas for the lunch menu at 11am, order one of those too. So you can have the best of both worlds. They have vegetarian meals too. Green chile ahhhhh. They only serve breakfast and lunch here. Try to go on a weekday because the weekends can be so busy.

Let's preface this first by saying that I am not a fan of anything spicy or hot (how I survived in SF, I don't know)... so my review might be a bit biased because of that. This place offers standard Southwestern fare - everything comes with chile! I ordered an "egg roll" - eggs, cheese, and potatoes wrapped in a flour tortilla. It came with salsa, which I did not eat, and I will admit, it definitely was a missing element in my meal. The waitress chastized me for not eating the salsa - I hid it behind my water :( It's tough being a vegetarian AND not liking chile in SF apparently! We ate breakfast on a Friday morning and our wait was only about 10 minutes. Oh... and my sweet roll was amazing.

Found this place on Yelp (of course) and loved it! Had the (ground) beef stuffed sopapilla with Christmas chile sauce (red AND green-- variety is the spice of life!). The meal came with a basket of warm sopapillas (fried bread) on the side, which was great for sopping up the extra chile sauce. Sure it's not waistline friendly, but it sure was wallet friendly!! The whole meal was less than $10 and pretty much filled me up for the entire day. Our server Valerie was friendly (maybe too friendly?!? helped herself to a seat in our booth while taking our order) and the food came out relatively quick and hot.

It was packed with people out the door when I arrived at 10:00 a.m.. I walked in and saw the host running around like a chicken with his head cut off (but in a good way). There was an elderly gentleman in front of me asking the host how the long the wait was and became disgusted by the answer from the host. He would have to wait a whole...fifteen minutes. He left and I told the host that I had NO PROBLEM waiting that long. He said it could be more or less since he is waiting for people to finish up at their counter. He laughed and cracked a couple of jokes about how long the wait was, super polite and friendly. I sit down at the counter that holds 4 people. There is a newspaper waiting for me and the server was already there asking what I wanted before I sat down. Cup of coffee and a couple of minutes to look at the menu. She was rather pushy at first about me hurrying up and ordering. Now I went with the Juevos Rancheros, which looked and tasted amazing. I got jealous when the two ladies next to me ordered the breakfast burrito and they had to split it. I'm a fairly big guy...I WOULD HAVE TO SHARE THAT BURRITO with someone. So I had an inner monologue of me being very jealous of these two, but I managed to get my sweet revenge. This place has THE best sopapillas I have ever had, and I come from a deep routed mexican family in AZ. My Nana would punch everyone around her because of how good these are. First off, they are $1 a piece and the size of radiator for a Buick (exaggeration), secondly, they came fresh out of the fryer and I burned my fingers because I was SUPER impatient to try one. There is a Big A** thing of honey right in front of you, and they put down a cinnamon sugar shaker to help kick it off right. I can feel the eyes of the woman next to me burning a hole through my hand staring dead center at my sopapillas. Next time, Breakfast burrito with Green Chile and 1 sopapilla and I should be happy. Highly recommend, it is a little touristy, but you never notice once your food is in front of you. My overall meal was about $13.

This place has some of the best breakfast in town! The only downer is they only serve it until 10...so for us service industry folk like me who don't get to bed til 4am becaus of work, it's really difficult to get up early enough to enjoy their yummy breakfast burrito. The staff there is super friendly and treats you like family. When I get a new schedule, I'll be sure to eat here more often in the mornings.

Oh man. This place. Is just so good. But there are a couple rules: - You go there for breakfast, only. - You do not wait more than 20 minutes for a table (aka avoid weekends, or go early). - You order the breakfast burrito, with egg, bacon, and green chile. - You wipe that smirk off your face about this not being "authentic" New Mexican food, just because it's on the plaza and tourists like it too. Follow those rules, and you will be happy. As an ex-local, I religiously avoided tourist traps (sidenote: Tomasitas? Waste of time unless you only want to eat sopaipillas w honey butter, or you are paralyzed by indecision of all the EXACTLY THE SAME new mexican menus, so you just go with what the concierge told you.) This is different. I come here at least once every time I come home because one of my high school friends will always be craving it with me. It might be the grated potatoes, or it might just be that they've nailed the ratio, but the breakfast burritos are awesome, fast, and please every time. My #1 choice for a New Mexian breakfast burrito. Don't hit me.

I had looked forward to returning to Tia Sophia's. On our last visit we really liked this place. Maybe the problem this time was that the restaurant was packed because of Indian Market. The servers were doing an admirable job of keeping things moving, so that wasn't the problem. My biggest concern was that the beans were watery, slightly undercooked and were just slopped on the plate next to our stuffed sopaipillas, causing them to be watery tasting and sodden. Has no one heard of a slotted spoon? On our previous trip the beans were well cooked and served in a separate dish was so much nicer. We may try this place again on a calmer day if we can get over the disappointment of this visit.

Just got back from Santa Fe, and a couple of visits to Tia Sophia's. Still as good as ever. The Wednesday special is absolutely fabulous: chicken in red sauce, with a blue corn cheese enchilada and the usual sides. Wow. Pancake and bacon seekers, take note: If you're going to order pancakes or an American breakfast, don't go to a New Mexican-style restaurant! It would be like going to a pizzeria and ordering French onion soup. It's not rocket science. Frankly, it's too bad they offer that stuff on their menu.

After waiting 9 long days and asking countless locals for advice, I set out by myself on a 30 minute walk to downtown Santa Fe in search of Tia Sophia's. When I arrived at 10:30am, the small lobby was filled with people waiting for tables. The hosts were super friendly and willing to have some pleasant conversation and I lucked out to an immediate seat at the bar! The staff was friendly and offered suggestions. I decided on the special of the day, a chorizo breakfast burrito and added an egg. It came out quickly and was so amazingly and wonderfully delicious. Completely the best food experience I had on my trip. I'm almost glad I came here last because if I would have tried it sooner, I would have become addicted. I will be back on my next visit.

Tia Sophia's was stop #1 on a 10 hour long eating extravaganza in which we visited and ate in 9 different restaurants throughout Santa Fe and Albuquerque. Although Tia Sophia's is located right in the middle of the touristy area of Santa Fe, it is anything but a tourist trap. I compare eating here with eating a really great home cooked meal at your favorite relative's or friend's house. The food is amazing! The portions are huge! The service is great! And the prices are ridiculously low. Yes sir, we have a winner! We had the following: Huevos Rancheros Christmas Style- both the red and green chili was simply amazing. I actually ordered an extra side of the red chili and literally (not kidding) ate it out of the bowl with a spoon like it was soup. The eggs were perfectly cooked and served on blue corn tortillas with delicious breakfast potatoes and creamy (which probably also means lardy) pinto beans. Because it is smack dab in the middle of the tourist square, they will warn you about the chili. In fact, the menu advises you that they are "Not responsible for 'too hot' chili." They will heavily suggest that you order your food chili-free or with the chili on the side. The food was so good we returned the next morning to enjoy breakfast again! If I lived near Tia Sophia's I would eat breakfast there everyday!

Getting bored with my Santa Fe reviews yet? Just a few more that I feel strongly about and I'll go back to driving Denver Yelpers crazy. I can't wave good by to Santa Fe without encouraging you to visit this little family owned breakfast/lunch place just a couple of blocks off the Plaza. it is nothing fancy but it's clean, the staff, obviously family and friends, are totally happy to serve you. Tia Sophia's offers pretty much the standard New Mexican slate of burritos, enchiladas, huevos rancheros, all smothered with their excellent red or green (or Christmas). I'm pretty sure if you are "heat challenged" you can get a "normal" breakfast" sans chile but why would you? You can do eggs, toast and potatoes at home. It is really embarrassingly inexpensive compared to current Santa Fe restaurant prices. The only drawback is, that like more places in Santa Fe during high season, the wait can be long. I try to arrive early before the crowds swarm in. They also close after lunch - no dinner option here. Give them a shot, you won't be sorry.

My pop said, "the friendliest place in Santa Fe." Friends of the family have recommended it, I saw lots of reviews on yelp. They have a bookshelf of kids books, it's a family friendly place, with booths and tables. Service was friendly. As everyone says, the meals are soupy. Pick out your food from the soupy platter. They gave us sopapilla, which you can put honey on, they have the honey on the table. The waitress kept my iced tea cup filled. I had the Monday lunch special which is the shredded beef burrito with both green and red sauce. I enjoyed it.

The place was fairly busy so we felt hopefulf about a good meal. Very disappointed. The waitress was surly. The food was borderline indedible. Had the Santa Fe plate. The plate looked like it had been thrown together, did not look appetizing at all. The rice was over cooked and watery. The cheese enchilada was just a flavorless pile of goo. The beans were flavorless.Tamale was pretty good. One of my friendsorderd the taco plate. Her tacos were so soggy they fell apart when she tried to pick them up. She sent her food back. We complained to management but they didn't seem particularly concerned. The decor is nice, but i would not recommend this place to anyone. Go the extra miles and head for Mary and Tito's in Albuquerque. Much better.

The road trip continued through Santa Fe where we met one of my best friends downtown for breakfast. Once again the co-pilot and I split two meals. One was the daily special which consisted of chorizo, scrambled eggs and hash browns. the other was a simple omelet. The food was good, no doubt, but I was a little surprised by the pricing. Not out of control high, but higher than I expected for Santa Fe. A side of four bacon strips was four dollars. I was expecting it to be some righteously thick hardwood smoked bacon but as I saw an order pass by I decided to opt out as it looked like the plain grocery store type. I could imagine giving this spot four stars if it were 20% less expensive but I have had better for cheaper all over the country and in pricy metropolitan cities. Overall I would recommend it because the food was good, but as it was my local friends second choice, I'd wonder if you could still find better.

There is only one place in santa fe to go if you want breakfast, and this place is it. The food is absolutly amazing: great menu, great green chile, all in a very home-y setting typical to santa fe. A lot of people think it's a great place as well so it's usually very very crowded, but it is well worth the wait. Not to mention right in downtown so it's easy to get to (also next to the parking garage so easy to park).

Tia Sophia's, more like Yummy Burrita's. There's a reason people wait out the door to get into this place. Amazingly, our wait was only about 20 minutes, even on a Saturday morning. They move people in and out pretty efficiently so be prepared to run in there when they call your number. As soon as we were seated we had a waitress taking our drink order. It didn't take long to decide what we wanted because they have a menu posted outside. Since it was Saturday, I went with the burrito of the day which was the Chorizo Burrito. It wasn't too long after we ordered that we got our behemoths on a plate. They do not mess around with the size of these burritos! Smothered perfectly with Christmas chile, every bite was warm and full of flavor. I would be 300lbs if I lived any closer to this place. I want to come back desperately to try the Huevos Rancheros! So, buy into the hype, grab a number in line and enjoy some of Santa Fe's best.

They serve you plain fresh and hot sopapillas and there's honey and cinnamon on the counter that you can put on yourself. SO GOOD! Amazing deal for the ground beef stuffed sopapilla ($9). It's smothered in cheese and chile. The beef is perfectly spiced and the sopapilla is so fluffy. You will be extremely full afterwards since the meal is pretty heavy. My boyfriend tried the combo plate of a tamale, enchilada, and taco (~$11). The taco was fantastic but the tamales and enchiladas were just standard for us.

It wasn't the best New Mexican food we've had on our vacation here, but it wasn't the worst, either. I had the carne adovada plate (it was on special) that came with rice and beans. It was good. The meat had really nice flavor. The spice level definitely builds as you go...I was sweating by the time I finished it. My dad had the combo plate...the green chile was really good. My mom had a sandwich of sorts, a tortilla with guacamole, tomato, and other stuff on it. They both liked their food as well. This place is probably worth the stop if you are shopping in the area.

This is a hard choice. One or two stars. Two stars for service. One star for food. Oh Tia what happened to the amazing burrito I saw on best breakfast ever. I ordered it and it looked amazing just like tv but then I was in for the surprise. I expected a cheesy wonderful breakfast burrito mess but instead found a less than mediocre taste. The burrito is covered in green and red chile which is ok but that is the best part of it. Inside is your choice of meat. I got ham. Then eggs and taters. The taters are not done. The cheese is only on top and the eggs are far and in between. I will not be back because I will bet that there are many much better places in town then this. Probably the best huevos rancheros I've ever had. Granted, I live in the Bay Area and this was my first time in New Mexico. The blue corn tortillas, crispy hashbrowns, perfectly cooked egg, and the Christmas sauce. Yum. My girlfriend had the breakfast burrito with bean and cheese. However, it was mostly stuffed with potatoes. That was odd, but she still enjoyed the sauces. I prefer places like this--friendly, reasonably priced, down to earth, and comforting. I had mine with both the green and red chiles. YUM! This is a must-try. New Mexico is famous for the green and red chile, so don't leave without trying and Tia Sophia's is probably the perfect spot to try some of this goodness. what a sham! This place relies only on it's long standing rep with tourists who believe they are eating authentic and delicious New Mexican fare. Our breakfast was served to us cold, so cold we did send it back. We had to grab an employee from the front because our waitress was no where to be found 3-5 minutes after she served us. When she learned that we sent the food back she came over to explain why the food was cold. Wtf? Then after retuning our plates to us never came back to see how anything was, if we were happy, if we wanted another coffee....service was non-existent. The food was bland, the green chile is a frozen product- during the height of GREEN CHILE season, no less. poor quality, no taste, no flair, and bad service. A definite must try! This is easily some of the best breakfast food I've ever had. I love that they put green chiles on practically everything. Come early because you will definitely be waiting, it is well worth the wait though. This is one of the few mandatory spots I make every time I'm in New Mexico. This is definitely a divey spot that has a lot of character with the friendly staff and old tables. I really enjoy the breakfast burrito smothered in green chilli with bacon, it is to die for. You'll be craving this burrito long after you leave. The huevos rancheros are also phenomenal. No matter what you get at Tia's you'll be pleased, just make sure you get some of those tasty New Mexico green chile's added to your dish!

I've heard good things about this place for a while now. I was excited to go to this landmark and see what all the hype was about. I got the small combo for under $10 and it included 1 Chile relleno, 1 rolled blue corn cheese enchilada topped with chile. It was as authentic New Mexican as one could hope for--and I would suggest that whether you're visiting Sante Fe for a day trip or you're lucky enough to live here but you're living under a rock of some sort--get a friend to help you get out from under the rock and then thank that friend by sharing in a meal at this spot. I hear the wait can be a tad long but I went on a Sat. at lunchtime and we waited under 15m, totally worth it. We all devoured our food and their green chile was on point! The waitress came and checked on our table about 1,243 times so they're nothing if not efficient. I mean, how much iced tea can one have? My only criticism was that the sopapilla that comes with every meal was a tad stale and I was really looking forward to it. But, that's definitely not enough to keep me from returning.

The waitress said nothing and led us to a table. Five minutes later she comes back and asked what we wanted- again I asked her is it too late? The waitress again with attitude says what do you want? Everyone working here that I met was very nice and a lot of smiling. It is bigger than it looks with plenty of seats further inside the restaurant. I ordered the breakfast burrito with a side of potatoes. It was served fast and nice and warm. Although the burrito was good nothing made it stand out. It was just eggs, meat, cheese and hash browns with red or green sauce. Good but not great! The small side of potatoes were overpriced and not worth it. Stopped in for lunch while touring the city. The food was OK. It was our first Mexican meal in Santa Fe and initially I was impressed, but after eating several other meals later in the trip, I realized that it was about average. I liked the blue corn enchilada. The taco was meh, but that's because they use ground beef. In CA you get shredded beef in the crispy tacos, but in NM and TX you get ground beef - not my preference. The green chile stew was ok. The sopaipillas were awesome. Maybe next time I'll get a stuffed sopaipilla. Anyway, the service was good enough. They were super crowded, but they were efficient enough that we didn't wait forever. Prices are fair.

I wanted to experience Santa Fe as the locals do and the name "Tia Sophia's" kept popping up. I decided to give it a try and stopped by for breakfast. I don't know why I pictured it as an extremely loud tourist trap, but it was quite the opposite. It was calm, friendly and anything but hectic. I ordered the red and green chile cheese enchiladas on blue corn tortillas and a cup of coffee. The enchiladas were drowned in chile and I wasn't sure where to make my first incision. In all honesty, I didn't even know how many enchiladas were on my plate due to all the melted cheese on top. Before coming in, photos of this plate made me feel like it was going to be very greasy and overwhelming. Surprisingly, it wasn't. I liked the beans that came along because they had a slight chew to them and were light at the same time. I left quite content and without that heavy feeling you can get from some Mexican food. Warning: they say they're not responsible for how hot the chile is. It wasn't spicy at all. Sorry! Maybe they were talking about temperature?

Worth the visit! Just remember it is a historical building and business so a part of the entire rating is the experience and being able to say, "been there!" The staff was very attentive and we had an awesome waiter. The food isn't the absolute best I have ever eaten, but it was very good. You definitely get enough to eat...and then some. They get an extra star for handling the sheer volume of customers around the clock, day in and day out. The sopapillas are too die for! We took children and had a good time. As a local was curious why so many visitors loved this place and I still have no clue after finally trying them out. The food is just OK, the place is a bit dated and tired looking. The service was nothing to speak of so I'm still not sure why so many 5 star reviews. Especially being right off the plaza I expected a bit more. The green chile is better than the red, for locals its not common to put oregano in the red chile so that might throw some natives off a bit. Overall there are a ton of other places that offer much more flavor for the price point. The good flavor of the green chile swayed me to give 3 stars instead of 2.

Hmmm. Not too impressed. I got huevos rancheros with Christmas chile. The chile is what breakfast (any meal!) in SF is about. Red and green chiles were both bland. There wasn't a lot of chile on the dish. Probably should have gotten only one so I got more of it. At $11 (with coffee), it was expensive for what I got. I'm not in any hurry to go back.

I do not understand the rave reviews. This place is just ok. Service: Front person was very nice, waitress seemed exasperated before we even sat down. Hardly anyone was in the restaurant but there was still an hour till closing. When our food came out she threw it on the table, I had to catch my plate or it would have ended up in our laps. She was so grumpy I actually didn't want to flag her down. Menu: Somewhat limited but very classic new Mexican fare. Food was just okay. Underspiced meat (but that may be authentic), but the chile oddly was too "smokey" flavored. With the bland seasoning on the rest of the food I couldn't taste anything else but that smoke which was not my favorite flavor. Sopapillas were great, perfectly puffed and served with honey. Personally I think the meat is the best part of the meal so if that's not perfect, I'm not that happy. Summary: With the oddly hostile service, and underwhelming food, it's probably someplace I'd bring visiting guests to try "authentic" but certainly not on the top of my list.

We went here based on reviews and boy were they wrong. It was overpriced for what it is, crowded even late lunch on a Monday, and very underwhelming. We had some avocado on the side and it was $4 extra for half an avocado! The food was OK, but so is taco bell. I'm writing this review so maybe there will be a little more balance from the rest of these 5 star reviews. DEFINITELY not 5 stars. The only reason I give it 2 is because I didn't see any roaches. My suggestion. Skip this place. I'll never go back.

Expected a little more As a single, I slipped right in and was seated at the counter (seats 4) without wait. Score! Or so I thought. The area around me was never fully cleaned off from the previous guest and multiple copies of the menu was left out in front of me, never picked up. I eventually pushed them aside, where they stayed my entire visit. No points for cleanliness or decor with unassuming dining rooms and big, wooden booths. The art on the wall is not exciting either. Breakfast burrito filled with bacon, eggs and potatoes topped with green chili and cheese for $9.75. Large in size and beautiful with the green and yellow drizzled across the top but that's all the good. The mediocre is what's inside. Mostly hash brown potatoes, a couple strips of bacon and hard to find egg. Outside of the red chili, there was no flavor. Maybe I caught them on the wrong morning or perhaps I expected more reading the reviews. Whatever the case, I was not impressed and with the plentiful options for good breakfast within walking distance, I doubt I'll be back.

Cons: table wasn't really wiped down. Lackluster service in some aspects, but good in others. For instance, my water glass was empty for a whole, but the waiter was super nice, fun and dropped off a pitcher of tea on the table for the other tea drinkers. My girlfriend and I were passing through Santa Fe on vacation, and we rolled into Tia Sophia's really in need of a pick-me-up. All were perfectly cooked and accompanied by the mildly spicy green chile sauce. Breakfast entrees come with a side of tortillas, but I was really craving a sopapilla. As far as relatively inexpensive food near the plaza in Santa Fe is concerned, this fits the bill. That being said, I tried their huevos rancheros and was really disappointed. Over half the plate was beans. Not only that, they were runny, watery beans. The scrambled eggs were OK, and the green chile was spicy, and I liked the fact that they offered blue corn tortillas, but overall I was disappointed in a dish that could have been done a lot better. I think sometimes you get what you pay for ... Otherwise, the service was good. Attentive staff, clean facilities. Like I said, reasonable prices. Convenient. No liquour license, so no beer, no bloody Marys. Probably wouldn't come back here, honestly.

The Monday Special had 2 eggs, guacamole, beans, on a tortilla, with Salsa on the side. The guac was smooth, not chunky, and the guac-eggs combo was really good. Their salsa is very spicy. My eyes are watering thinking about it! The beans were very ordinary. I also ordered honey wheat bread toast and "potatoes." The menu has potatoes in quotes, and they are in fact hash browns. They were cooked perfectly, with a little crunch, without much butter, and without much salt. They actually tasted kinda/sorta healthy.

Tia's is one of the few truly authentic dining experiences in Santa Fe. Whether you are a local that eats here on a regular basis or a tourist dining for your first time, the staff treats you like family. The green chile is second to none, and the red is just addicting!! Thank god you can order "xmas" and get both!! Don't even get me started on the sopapillas, they are AMAZING! My only complaint is not being able to go there for dinner too! This is my new favorite restaurant in Santa Fe! The food was delicious and authentic! Exactly what I wanted on our visit to New Mexico. Once we were seated the service was wonderful! They had a bookshelf of books for children to look at while waiting and the owner brought us a sample of their guacamole so we could taste it to make sure it wasn't too spicy for our three year old. They brought complimentary sopapillas with our meal and gave us a free one for our three year old. Tip: when you walk in walk up to the counter and tell them how many you have in your party. I made the mistake of waiting for someone to ask us how many in our party and ended up having to wait a little longer for a table.

I had the tamales with christmas sauce and my companion had the green chile cheese omelet. The food arrived quickly and was delicious! It was a lot of food! To top it off fresh fried sopapillas with honey aced the experience. I love this place. The service was extremely well done--the diner, no fancy talk, but friendly and efficient. Clearly the server cared about the food being up to par and checked on us right away. The cashier is able to have three conversations at the same time and was really delightful--put a big smile on our faces. When we came in, he asked "how many" and told us to grab any open table. I highly recommend it as a great compliment to a day in Santa Fe.

Cold food and bad attitude. I ordered hashbrowns and a fried egg, and they both arrived cold. So they brought me another plate of hashbrowns, but they were cold too. The server didn't check back in with me to see how the food was, so I just ate the cold potatoes. When the waitress came with my check, I told her that the new potatoes were still cold, and she denied it... She said they just took the potatoes off the griddle. I noticed that the locals were treated in a very friendly manner, so it's possible that they get better service than the visitors. Don't come to Tia Sophia's for hot food or friendly service.

I heard that the locals eat at Tia's, so I had to try it. The locals do eat there, so it's both yummy and not crazy expensive. Fast service. Good food. The sopaipillas are light and fuffy and come with every lunch entree, so you won't miss out on trying them. It's not fancy, but it's good food. Try it!

The entrees come with a sopapilla (which is the size of if a snack dog out large cat's head pillow, if said animals used said pillows). Blue corn enchiladas with red chili were great; pinto beans were bland, but that's been true everywhere I've been in Santa Fe so far. No chips and salsa, but food comes fast enough that you won't really mind. Expect to wait a few minutes to be seated, but overall it's worth it.

Great breakfast. Every trip to Santa Fe requires at least one breakfast at Tia Sophia's. Huevos Rancheros is my favorite, but they have great pancakes and American style breakfast, too. Go early before it gets crowded.

Excellent lunch, and I was glad that they were very friendly and hospitable to our young kids... a guy brought out some crackers for them to munch on while they were waiting and he was very friendly.... which means a lot to us as parents. Especially in Santa Fe, where not many places really seem to be particularly friendly to families with young kids. Our lunches were all delicious and the service was prompt and friendly. We also loved the soapapillas. It was a nice experience!

Well, one hundred thirteen Yelp'ers cannot be wrong, right? Tia Sophia's is one of the best places to eat breakfast, or lunch in Santa Fe. When we're up near The Plaza, we always come here for breakfast. The food is good and there never seems to be a long wait to be seated. Parking on the other hand can sometimes be difficult. The restaurant is somewhat old, and recently there was some construction going on outside. Inside, the restaurant it's always hopping. Recently, as we were relaxing and enjoying our breakfast and coffee, we noticed several of the customers who came in after us were already leaving and paying their check. The turnover of patrons is quick. Tia Sophia's makes a nice Huevos Rancheros, that comes with the New Mexican red & green chile sauce. Here, it's spicier then most. So, if you don't like your food with some heat, then I would skip the Christmas tree. Their Breakfast burrito is also good. We really like Tia Sophia's but in the end they lost by a muffin to Tecolote! LOL Expect to pay $17 to $22 for two, depending on what you order. Enjoy!

The place to go for breakfast/lunch in Santa Fe. They have the best green chile, get it straight in a bowl if you can handle the heat, if not try the huevos rancheros with green chile. Sopapillas are to die for but only served with lunch (after 11 and not on Sundays).

Look out. Hot Chilis available. Great locals place but beware....you need to be specific about the amount of HEAT you want on your plate. Great sopes, enciladas and very efficient service. Usually there's a line for lunch but we scooted right in. If the wait is 20 minutes...wait! Next time I'm in town, I will certainly try them for dinner.

We came to try the "Best breakfast burrito" in new mexico. It's pretty much a hash brown burrito with a slice of bacon and a small amount of egg. The best part was the green Chile But in NM you can get that same green chile anywhere. The service was not that great probably because the waitress was running around and didn't have time to take care of our needs. The food, service, and atmosphere is 100 times better down the street at Tomasita's. As far as best "best burrito" must be tourists who voted.

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our Friday morning breakfast at Tia Sophia's, the food was delicious & the women who waited on us were extremely warm & friendly. The atmosphere feels like an authentic diner with Santa Fe character & flare. The food is reasonably priced, the ingredients tasted fresh, & we got everything in good time. The one imperfection was the coffee was burnt, but such an easy fix & barely mentionable. We will definitely visit again our next trip to Santa Fe, it was wonderful all-around!

Busy lunch time at Tia's. Affordable by Sante Fe standards, but that does not mean cheap. They got us in and out and I enjoyed the authentic Sante Fe green chile spice. Location is great if you are enjoying the Downtown plaza.

It's just off the plaza but seems to have more of a locals draw than a tourist stop. Service is friendly and quick, from getting you a table to taking your order to getting good on the table it refilling your drink. The check shows up fast, but no one is pushing you out of your booth. The menu is relatively small, and there's a breakfast special everyday. I wanted the "atrisco plate" (green chile stew, eggs, tortillas) but also wanted an enchilada (there's a breakfast plate that's enchiladas and eggs). No worries- our waitress offered a luncheon plate (not on the breakfast menu) with eggs- very nice. They warn you about the heat of the chile- all of us ordered breakfasts Christmas style (red and green) and while tasty with a kick, it's certainly not too hot. The green chile stew was good with chunks of pork, and massive potatoes (push those to the side). Enchiladas were nice and gooey. Good posole, that is, if you like that. Toss some red or green chile over the pintos or posole and it's all good. Food was the basic New Mexican that we all like, that sadly seems to be fading into the background. Tia Sophia is that place that made us love Santa Fe long ago. Have never been there for anything but breakfast, but the breakfasts have all been tasty, plentiful and good value, with friendly and fast service.

Told me 20 minutes after placing a to-go order that they could only make my bean burrito, but not the BLT-avocado or cheeseburger because it was 30 min before they served lunch items. This place is an institution, a place my father took me, I will take my children, and I hope my children will take theirs. It's the Old Faithful of New Mexico, the place that has never disappointed me. And it's the best damn breakfast in New Mexico and just beats out Dominican breakfasts as the finest meal to wake up to in the morning. To dine here is easy; you hardly need to check the menu. If it's breakfast, GET THE BREAKFAST BURRITO! If it's lunch, GET JUST ABOUT ANYTHING! The truth is you can't go wrong here. The breakfast burritos are massive, they come smothered in the tastiest, richest of red, green or both New Mexican chiles, and you can stuff them with all types of goodies: eggs, bacon, hashed browns, sausage (my favorite). It's a hearty meal, but also just an explosion of outstanding flavors. I really must tip my hat to the grand individual that dreamed up the breakfast burrito New Mexican style, they deserve to have their face chiseled into Mt. Rushmore. If you're not in a burrito mood, you can still win Charlie Sheen style at breakfast with the huevos rancheros, which again could feed the North Korean army, but rarely last long once the eater tastes the delicious combo of beans, tortilla and egg. If you miss breakfast, don't fret, because the stuffed sopaipillas, the enchiladas, the burritos, the carne adovada, the posole, essentially anything you order will leave you full and content. As the saying goes, "Barriga llena, corazon contento" (or "panza llena"). The key really is the chile, which though piquant and not for the faint of heart, leaves no question that you're eating NEW Mexican food. The rich, roasted garlic mixed with that distinct New Mexican chile flavor is something that Tia Sophia's has mastered in the kitchen and made routine, thus assuring that time and time again diners will love their meal. To top it off, the service here is splendid, the servers and busboys all long-time employees who recognize customers and greet them with open arms. The prices are fair, nothing that I'd ever complain about. Oh, and like all great New Mexican restaurants, they offer sopaipillas that you'll dream about days after finishing. This place could just be the eighth (or what the hell number are we at now?) wonder of the world.

When my husband and I are in Santa Fe we usually head straight to Tia Sophia's for breakfast. We always have the burrito, Christmas style. Service could be better - we feel hustled through like cattle - but it's a popular place and we understand why. This was the first place we hit when we arrived in Santa Fe. This was the first place where we were asked the question: Red Sauce, Green Sauce, or Christmas? My first though was Christmas is in December, not February! Cearly the waitress saw a big question mark on our faces. Christmas in New Mexico mean 1/2 green sauce and half red...! The mixture of the 2. Ok, lesson one of the day, salsas learned! They had everything from burritos, enchildadas, to tamales. Over all the food is ok. It does taste a little "out of the can," but different for sure. The waitress was very friendly. In general the rest of the people who work there are friendly. I had a question about the chile verde, (chile verde in California is a little different) and the manager came out to explain to me that chile verde in New Mexico is made out of actual chiles. I think the best part of the meal were the sopapillas. OMG, indian fried bread with cinnamon and honey.... oh my... oh my. super tasty. All the locals said this was a place that we had to try, they it was an authentic New Mexican food place. I would go back again, I think now that I know what to expect my experience will be different.

Had breakfast there with a friend who happens to live in Santa Fe. I like casual layer back type of restaurants and this fit the bill. Arrived at around 9:30 and was seated immediately in one of the booths. Waitress was cordial, funny and efficient. Huevos Rancheros, Christmas style with red and green chile was plentiful and tasty. Chile was a bit runny for my taste but flavor was there. Would have preferred it a bit spicier but it let the other flavored come through. Beans on the side on the plate were some of the best I've had. I know, beans? Yep. Cooked just right and a good compliment to the dish. Side of bacon was very good both in quantity and smoky flavor. One thing I really like was the sugar container on the table was actually cinnamon sugar (the kind Mom used to make to put on buttered toast). Perhaps it was the nostalgic vibe or that it really did taste that good that scored extra points for Tia's but I will be back.

We went here for lunch on a Friday. We arrived about 11:30-ish so the line was not too long. We waited maybe 10 minutes. Not at all like breakfast when the wait can be an hour or more. I got the Santa Fe plate--tamale, cheese enchilda, taco, beans, posole, and sopapilla. It was good, but it came as one big wet blob on the plate so you could not really tell what you were eating (the crispy taco came separately). The beans, which were really the only distinguishing thing on the plate, were very flavorful. The wife got green chile stew--it is true what they say, the peppers here are hot! We had to order a side of sour cream to tame it down. We both enjoyed the sopapillas with honey; a nice way to end a very spicy meal. I would add that the portions are huge and the service is very fast. I "get" what this place and it is fine for what it is. I am glad that I tried this institution in Santa Fe dining. But with so many other great places to try in Santa Fe I would be inclined to try something else before returning. If I do return I want to try a stuffed sopapilla and the wife wants to try breakfast.

When I go to a restaurant in Santa Fe, I feel really weird saying I want Christmas. I think it's because I'm a jew, and I didn't grow up saying I want christmas all over my life like all you crazies did :P ANYWAY, we came here for lunch with a big group. Had a short wait, but it was totally worth it. I got chile rellenos, which I ordered with "both" chiles on top. Yeah, eat that Santa Fe. Anyway, they were really yummy, though WAAAAAAAAY too much food for lunch. And what's with not being offered a doggy bag? I noticed nobody had any. Next time, I'm ordering Hanukkah.

I actually found this spot to be pretty disappointing. I shared a cheeseburger and an entrée plate with Beef Green Chile Stew, Tamale, rice and beans. All items lacked flavor. The cheeseburger was just okay...it tasted like something you could make at home with Costco buns and Costco beef patties and American cheese. The entrée plate was okay - the green chile was good, but a pretty small portion with only two pieces of beef. Everything else was also a bit flavorless. The service was nice, but that's the only thing I really liked about this spot. It seems like the way to go is to get the Breakfast Burrito, which I would definitely come back for, but not for lunch items.

When traveling, we rely on Yelp reviews to guide us to great places to visit and to dine. Because of the 4 stars it received, we were looking forward to lunch at Tia Sophia's. Really??? 4 stars??? Man, were we disappointed. Maybe because it is near downtown historic Santa Fe, & have a constant flow of tourists, the owners don't feel the need to update the place. It has a tacky & run-down, and kind of a dirty, feel. Now we're not averse to eating at hole-in-the wall establishments at all - we've had some terrific meals at many unassuming establishments. Tia Sophia is actually a bit retro by today's definition, but by accident. The tacos (1 beef, 1 chicken) were very bland and unseasoned - little flavor, and this in a New Mexico style restaurant??? The shells were greasy & soggy & literally fell apart on the plate. (A well-made taco shell will not do this.) The green chile stew, which New Mexico is famous for, had HUGE chunks of potato, and very little pork. Pretty decent flavor, though. The sopaipillas were we tough and not tasty. We only saw our server when he took our order, brought the order & delivered the check. It was very perfunctory - simply a job that he was doing. When we left to pay, we were never even asked how everything was. But why should they? This place is geared for tourists, of which there is an endless stream. Santa Fe has many wonderful places that serve New Mexico style cuisine - this place just isn't one of them.

I have just one word for y'all: sopapillas. We are at Tia Sophia's for lunch after a long morning of walking around the streets of Santa Fe, and we were not disappointed. There's memorabilia all over the restaurant touting its award-winning stuffed sopapillas, so I went for that--stuffed with rice and beans with "Christmas" chile on the side (because I'm a wimp.) The stuffed sopapilla was probably one of my favorite Mexican dishes. EVER. And then there were MORE sopapillas, brought out to the table fresh and served with cinnamon sugar and honey. Fried pillows of heaven. Count me in. (Oh, and the service rocked, too.)
