Double Green Chile Cheese burger is so tasty. It is the epitome of a well flavored and spicy hand held New Mexican delicacy. They churn these out like no other. I went ahead and ordered the Green Chili tortilla burger to mix it up. I was very surprised that you can probably wrap anything around it and it would taste oh so good. The environment was also great...we ordered a beer at the bar and were sat shortly after. We have to hand it to this place, they know how to cook, serve and treat customers.

This place is "legendary" for its green chile cheeseburgers so we felt we had to stop in on our way from Albuquerque to El Paso. I will start out by saying that the burger didn't disappoint. The party was thick and good well, and not dried out. Very tasty. The green chile wasn't hot, but it was flavorful. I liked it and can't really complain about it. The fries....not so much. They lacked flavor and needed a lot of salt and ketchup. They weren't crisp and the ones in the bottom were soggy from the grease they were cooked in. I wouldn't recommend them. The service: it was pretty terrible. When we walked in there was an apparent wait but they told us we could be seated at the bar right away. We jumped all over that offer thinking we might get out of there sooner. We were then ignored for 10 minutes until they finally asked us if we wanted something to drink.....at a bar mind you. After that it took about another 5 minutes to get us the drinks we ordered. Then it took another 5 or 10 minutes to take our food order. By the time we actually got our hamburgers and fries it was 45 minutes from the time we got seated. We noticed that there were 3 cooks in the kitchen doing a lot of standing around. We then noticed that they seemed to wait for enough burger orders to fill the grill, then they would cook a lot at once. When those were done they would stand around and wait. No wonder it took so long! No body was in a hurry! All in all, our stop at the Buckhorn ended up taking 1 hour, for a simple burger and fries. I would suggest not stopping here if you are traveling and in a hurry to keep moving. It was getting to the point of being silly as we sat there and continued to watch the cooks stand around doing nothing after we had placed our order. This is why I'm giving them two stars. If you aren't in a hurry and don't mind "miniana ville" then I say stop in and try the burger.

Took the short drive from Socorro down to San Antonio to give the 7th best burger in the U.S. A try. Ordered the famous Buckhorn Burger which is a 1/2 pound burger on a fresh bun with green chillies & cheese with a side on fresh cut French fries. The burger was cooked perfectly, and was very flavorful and juicy. The green chillies gave the burger a little spice but nothing to harsh. The fries were excellent and some of the best I've had. Differently lived up yo the rating, and worth the drive if you are in the are.

We stopped by Buckhorn after a nice weekend retreat to White Sands and T or C. This was the 2nd Green Chile Cheeseburger I had on the trip and the 1st one was dynamite so I'll admit the competition was stiff. Buckhorn is a dive and lives up to the name. The staff was friendly and the owner went around and talked to each table, including us, and was very down-to-earth and overall a cool guy. The burgers and fries took a little while to come out but I'm ok with waiting for food if it's gonna be good. The Green Chile Cheeseburger (Buckhorn Burger on the menu) was a solid burger. It wasn't bad by any means and it wasn't "holy-moly this is heaven on earth" amazing, either. The toppings are added after the patty is ready and seemed stiff and plain compared to the patty. Don't get me wrong I would eat one of these a week if I could cause they are tasty but I'll admit I was hoping for more. To their credit, my wife, who also had the Buckhorn Burger said she preferred it over the other Green Chile Cheeseburger we had on the trip that I really enjoyed so perhaps it's just a personal preference. I think Yelp's description for a 3-star joint is perfect here; Manny's Buckhorn Tavern is "A-Ok".

Classic NM burgers in a rustic setting. Worth the 20-mile round-trip from Socorro, but I would not travel farther than that. If you're passing through, though, stop by and grab some grub.

After a long day of bird watching at the nearby nature reserve, I ended up here to try the legendary green chili burger. I've heard they were featured on the food network and beat Bobby Flay. Anyway we ordered the green chili burger along with chili cheese fries with red and green chili. At first I thought to myself... The burger's alright I guess. Not super special. There was something different but honestly it just tastes like any other burger. After eating the fries for a bit, I figured it out. Yeah, the green chili is truly amazing. Rich, deep, complex, smokey chili flavor with just the right amount of spice. It made everything taste great. Anyway the burger itself? It's alright. The fries? I like the cheese whiz. Reminds of pats and geno's in Philly. I'd skip the red chili sauce entirely. But the green chili, yeah that's special. Put that on everything and it's great. If you ever happen to be in the area, it's worth a stop. I didn't even get a lot of strange looks for being Asian. I mean I can't imagine there are a ton of Asians coming through southern (?) New Mexico on a regular basis. Or maybe I'm wrong.

We always stops here for lunch whenever we drive down to LC. It's a local watering hole, so don't expect fancy decores. They are understaffed so the service is VERY SLOW. It took 45 minutes to get our burger. There were no cell service so download some books on your phone or bring a magazine if you are dining in. The burger was good, but wishing it wasn't over-cooked. The chili cheese fries were good, but the ice tea was bland. Also it was kind of hot inside. Despite these complaints, it's still one of the best green chili cheese burger you will ever have. We will be coming back!

The best green chili burger I've had period. We stopped in to eat on our way from El Paso to Albuquerque. As for the burger, I decided to go without the cheese on it to taste the chili better, which is the PERFECT New Mexican green chili. Sweet, full of flavour with the right amount of heat. By the way I'm a gringo who finds a lot of chili too hot.The burgers are hand made fresh per order with super tasty beef and big but not too huge. A perfect portion. The buns are soft and soak in the chili juice without falling apart. The food is made with love and you definitely can taste it. As great as the food is, the meal is made even better by Manny, the chef and owner. Such a lovely man with a beautiful heart and soul. So please stop in and enjoy. P.S. Manny beat Bobby Flay's T

Pretty good green chili burger but steer clear of the hot dog. It was neon pink. My 3yo took one bite and stuck to the fries. Nice little hole in the wall to stop on the long ride from Tucson to Albuquerque.

Let's face it, your in San Antonio NM. Rustic place, friendly people, and a good burger. It's claim to fame is Bob Flay stopped by and cooked with the owner. It's also been published in several magazines as well. Have plenty of time on your hands as in New Mexico there is no such thing as hurry up.

I was excited to be given a chance to eat at the Buckhorn. The food was great and was hand cooked. We saw a bunch of potatoes in the back that they used for the fries. I got their taco burger, and it was very good. This is a simple place, so don't expect fanciness. All food and drinks are served with throw-away plastic, etc. The service was excellent, and although there was a short wait, the waitress always apologized and was very pleasant. They offered to take our photo for us. The meat was grilled just right, and the french fries were good. It wasn't necessarily the best I ever tasted, but it definitely hit the spot. It was also featured on the Food Network. The only thing I regret was not trying their famous green chile burger. That will have to wait until next time. One word of warning: this is not a fast food restaurant. Also, there were long lines waiting outside, showing its popularity. Your best bet is to find out when they open and get there then. We got there fifteen minutes before opening time and there was already a line. The atmosphere of the restaurant was very rustic. It's not a very big restaurant, hence the wait time, but it has a very Western feel suitable to the surrounding environment (it's in a rural area).Would definitely recommend checking out.

The Buckhorn or The Owl? That is the question when you're on a road trip between Albuquerque and Las Cruces. Both are divy and fun....I prefer The Buckhorn. Try the Buckhorn Special - a juicy beef patty with cheese and red or green chile, smothered with fries and served with a dry piece of Texas toast. Wash it down with one of their many bottled beers and you'll be on your way! This is not place for a quick meal, but the servers are friendly and the prices are reasonable.

Tucked close to the corner of Hwy 380 and I-25 is the famous Buckhorn Tavern. We were on the way back from Santa Fe to Texas and decided to take a detour to this tavern. We got there around 11:30 on Saturday and there were quite a bit of people already waiting. They don't have any hostess or waiting list; everybody is waiting and you have to remember your turn. Forget about to-go order; it is not in their dictionary. Once we got our seat, we ordered a couple green chile cheese burger, onion rings, and chile cheese fries. I have tried several green chile cheese burger in Santa Fe and Albuquerque, and found Buckhorn's chile to be the freshest and spiciest. We happen to like spicy food... a lot, so we liked it a lot. We could taste the detail in the burger due to its freshness. It was truly a delightful experience. We got a chance to speak with owner, Bob, on the way out as he was resting outside. A really nice gentleman. He shared a little bit his days as a celebrity chef. We will definitely be back when passing through the area!

While staying in Socorro we took a brief drive to try the famous burgers at Buckhorn. I must say that pretty much everyone in our group was disappointed. First off, make sure you're paying attention or you'll blow right by this little place. The place is small, dark and basically a dive. Not that it necessarily matters when it comes to food. My burger was small and just blah. I got the green chili on the side because I don't like spicy food. I tried it and it was indeed too spicy for me. Another in our group who does like spicy smothered his burger in the stuff and still didn't care for his burger. The fries cost extra and were really greasy. Staff was fairly friendly but they are uncomfortably weird about IDing everyone who is drinking. They must have been fined for not checking in the past because they even IDed those in our group who were clearly in their 60s. I did try a decent, fun brew called Alien. Those who had been to Bodega Burgers said their burger were waaaay better.

I was on day 4 of a 4 day food pilgrimage, which included 4 stops in New Mexico, 1 in Texas, and 4 in Mexico. I was looking for (among other things), the best green chile cheesburger in the world. I had heard that San Antonio was Mecca, and that all roads lead to two places -- The Owl, and Buckhorn. I have been to the Owl in Albuquerque, and MEH... While I don't want to hold The Owl in San Antonio to the dubious record of its namesake, the Yelp reviews suggested that I try Buckhorn. I figured that it was time to try them ---- This ain't my first rodeo - I have been critiquing green chile cheeseburgers for years -- I won Blue Ribbon (1st place) in the New Mexico State Fair (Horticulture) 15 years in a row. I rolled-up at lunch time on a Tuesday -- the sign outside said "voted #7 in America". There were a few tables occupied, but I would classify the place as "mostly empty". I ordered a green chile cheeseburger (medium), fries and a coke. Apparently, they call that "The Buckhorn". It looks like they were processing an order to go, but other than that, the place was pretty dead. The coke came pretty quickly, and I nursed it, waiting for the food, and waited, and waited. I endured half of a Discovery Channel documentary about the The battle of Thermopylae. I find televisions in restaurants to be annoying, but the Buckhorn gets around that by calling themselves a bar. They had a bunch of cutesy notices at the door (posted on a quarter-scale chainsaw carved bear) "This isn't a fast food place - if thats what you are looking for leave now" -- boy they were right, and I should have taken the warning. I suppose I can always thank them for my well rounded knowledge of ancient Greek, Spartan, and Persian battle tactics. Did you know that the Spartans considered the Persians as woosies, because they washed themselves and combed their hair before they went into battle? The Greeks retreated, to leave the Spartans, Thebians, and Thespians to defend the pass. Xerxes (the Persian) outnumbered them, and had no choice, but to continue --- you see, they had just completed a triumphant campaign, but his men were starving -- wow -- how history repeats itself... How long can an army of half a million nurse a coke. I gotta admit, they looked great too! Far better than I did, after 4 days on the road with an old Suburban and a slipping transmission... The price was between high and outrageous, the help was condescending at best, the food was just acceptable. Overcooked, as usual... As green chile cheeseburgers go, 7th place is just about right. As far as "voting", this place is a testament to the voting public... The sign out front is the best thing about it --- Next trip -- I will try the Owl... OH-BTW, the Persians won -- they had 10,000 archers -- they simply TOOK the food...

Ate there last night on the way to a HS football game. Heard the legend, so we had to stop in. Glad we did. We got there right at 5:30pm on Friday, but in 20min we were chowing down. Cool place, not a fast good joint. Not a high falutin' place trying to be something it's now. Just a local beer & burger joint. Service was nice & friendly. They make their own burger patties here, as God intended. And they're great. Green chile was plenty warm but not painful. Be careful, I ordered double meat....it was damn big! Get the homemade fries, I loved 'em. Skip the onion rings.

We had to come to Socorro so decided to drop on down and try this place since they were closed the last time we were here. The burger is excellent as advertised. The onion rings very good as well. I would have liked a bit more heat to the green chile, but this is great for those who want the mildest chile taste. They don't use washable plates and nothing we ordered required flatware so it isn't a fancy restaurant but it is the kind of character rich establishment we love to find. I always thought the burger at what used to be the Bobcat Bite in Santa Fe couldn't be beat. Now I am not sure. But this is not to be missed if you are in the area, they are open and you want a great cheeseburger. Finally, the friendliness of the staff helps sell the entire package. We really enjoyed the stop.

Keep driving!! So rude that we left. If I could give a NO STAR, I would. I love restaurants and especially the ones off the beaten path. Those are the ones that are always fun, great service and conversations with the locals BUT NOT HERE. We stopped in on a Thursday, early afternoon and were treated like dirt. Rude comments to me and my friend in front of our husbands. Stuff like, "do they ever shut up", "do your wives have an off button" it was crazy. We walked in laughing and having a great time and were treated like dirt because of it. Sorry some people are enjoying life but if you own a restaurant...you should treat people with respect. Will not return and never recommend!

Stop at this place on our way back to Albuquerque. The sign that read voted #7 best burger caught my eye. I thought to myself, I'll get something to go. As soon as I open the door I see sign about "this is not a fast food joint" something about allowing enough time and another sign about checking everyone's ID, who drinks. Since I wanted something to go I went straight to the bar. Another sign reads "no double shots!" Alright. Lol I sitting around for a good 5 to 10 minutes waiting to be helped. One of the cooks keeps staring about me, but service didn't come any faster. Finally, I get helped. Lady takes my order. I tell her it's to go. She replies we don't do to go's. Which in turn I respond "what do you mean you don't do to go's? Why not?" She says something about that's their policy on Fridays and Saturdays. Something about the meat running out...blah blah blah. I have no idea. Sounded like a bunch of bs to me. My husband and I decided to sit and eat. The Food was good, but I've had better. The service was slow. The fact that this business would not allow me to take my food to go really threw me for a loop. I should have just walked out right then and there. It's obvious that this place does not care about their customers. I have a 1 week newborn with me. I wanted to take it to go because I wanted to avoid a melt down. Lucky my daughter was a gem. But seriously this business needs to chill. Your in the middle of nowhere NM, your food isn't that great. Get over yourselves.

I have been going to the Owl the past few years and noticed the last few times the burgers were so greasy my bun melted away. So my mother and I decided to eat at Buckhorn. The meat was seasoned will and the onion rings were nice and crispy. The chile had the right bite to it and it was very tastey. The staff was nice and friendly too.

I was very excited to try the burgers heard they were wonderful...but had to leave because the staff was extremely rude. we came with a large group and I know it was overwhelming but I worked in an emergency veterinary clinic for many years and no matter how crazy and busy we were I always treated my customers as individuals and with respect. I'll address the one big thing right up front: yes, the burgers are good. I won't take that from them. They are doing burgers right, and this place has an old school roadhouse type ambiance that just adds to the experience. That being said, I will offer this caveat to the hungry traveler: Manny's is a victim of its own success. When they are slammed, they simply cannot put out enough food in a short time. The physical infrastructure of the kitchen won't permit it. So, if you're hungry, and this place is busy, do yourself a favor and just go across the street. The burgers there are comparable, and you won't have a ridiculous wait.

Get the Buckhorn Burger! Gotta try what claims to be the best green chile burger around. I certainly thought it was. (Although the very best green chile burger I have EVER eaten was in Santa Fe at The Cowgirl. But in these parts, the Buckhorn rocks the socks off all of the other burger joints I've tried so far.) Service is a little slow, but the burger makes up for it. Liked the atmosphere and the staff. If you're coming this way, don't waste your time across the street at the Owl Bar. This place has the better green chile burger, trust me! Fries are no good though- way too greasy.

They're not kidding about the not-a-fast-food place. You will wait. And wait. And wait for your food. But the classic diner burger that comes is covered with a healthy belt of green chile that makes you forget the wait. Nice old school divey atmosphere.

Unfortunately, I didn't get to try this place out. We showed up shortly after opening time. They open at 11 and we got there around 11:10. One of the staff actually ran inside the front door as we pulled in to the front of the restaurant, so they knew we were there. It had started to rain and we were definitely hungry. Unfortunately, when we got to the front of the restaurant, the door was locked (after a staff member had already run inside). We tried knocking on the front door and my sister went up to one of the windows to see if someone would let us in. We tried for about 5 minutes and then went drove across the street to the Owl Bar and Cafe on that pouring, rainy day. I won't be going back to Buckhorn. They lost a potential customer.

Drove through San Antonio in the way to Socorro. Had always heard how good the Owl bar was but hadn't heard of Manny 'a until they were on the Food Channel . The buckhorn burger (the green chili cheeseburger ) is great. Good amount of kick. The home cut fried were a nice treat, though they were a bit greasy. Definitely recommend.

I love hidden treasures like these in the Southwest!! Especially with the high ratings from The Food Network, New York Times, etc, I loved how the servers were chill and were not like other pompous servers who act like we would waste their time eating there. As for the interior- the walls are filled with beer neon and street signs, but it looked cool and mysterious as if you don't know what's going to happen next. As for the food, it was like what the critics raved, DELICIOUS!!

Best burger we've ever had! This place has the most tender beef and delicious green chilies. The four of us stopped here on the way to Albuquerque (just a minute off the highway!) and ordered the green chili cheeseburger (The Buckhorn Burger). We all agreed it was the best we'd ever had, (and my mother order burgers 90% of the time we eat anywhere). The staff was hilarious and engaging and the food came out incredibly fast! Truly a San Antonio gem worth stopping for!

When I checked in I called this place, "one of the best burger joints". I stand corrected! This is in fact the best burger joint I've ever been to! To quote Samuel L. Jackson in Pulp Fiction - "Now that is a tasty burger!" Now, I have never had that Big Kahuna burger - but I am sure The Buckhorn's Green Chile Cheeseburger can take it any day. This is by far the best place in NM to eat a burger. When traveling I-25 between Las Cruces and ABQ, be sure to stop in for a taste. Just be sure you are not in a hurry. In fact, as soon as you walk in, there is a sign saying something like "Buckhorn is not a fast food resturant - if you are in a hurry, this is not for you". And that is quite true. When I was there, only two waitresses were working about twenty tables. But when you have a burger this good: 1) It's worth the wait; and 2) you will want to cherish each bite.

Hate to be "that guy", but I was not too impressed. $16.70 for a decent burger, fries and a bottled Newcastle. The cooks, an off-duty employee, and even the sheriff that stopped in were all very friendly-our particular server however, was nothing short of a jerk. This place wouldn't even make top 50 on my list but hey, at very least it was a place to sit down after a hard day of work and have a $4.50 imported bottled brew...

great little find when going to see the bosque cranes! Its a small little mom and pop type shop that can get pretty crowded! There are signs that say its not a fast food joint so don't expect to get your food quickly. The burgers are one of the best I've ever had. It is on the softer side, though!

Stopped in here to compare their green chile cheeseburger with the next door Owl Bar and Cafe. Both establishments definitely have the "local" and not the "corporate" feel, which isn't a bad thing. For a Thursday night, quite a number of tables were full, which is always a good sign. I had the nicest and most polite waitress that I have had in a LONG time. They have a nice selection of sodas and local and national brand beers but nothing on fountain or tap for which they lose some points in my book. I ordered the green chile cheeseburger and some french fries. The green chili cheeseburger was delivered in a very timely manner and with the same smile and attention as when I first walked in. The burger was pretty darn good, but I can't say that it was definitevly better, just different. One difference of note, though, is that their green chile tasted and looked fresher than the competition for sure. The fries were okay but nothing to write home about. Long story longer, I would recommend that if you're hungry, stop at both places and do your own version of San Antonio, New Mexico's "Geno's vs. Pat's" competition...

I have been here in the past and it is an ok place to get a mediocre burger while driving through. It's true that they are not "fast food" because everybody walks around without a care in the world and will get to you when they feel like it. This is on a good day! After my last experience I will never return. We stopped in on a Thursday at 5:15pm and there was only one other patron in the place. We stopped at the front and waited to be seated. The owner was there standing at the front and overheard us talking about a minor car accident. He greeted us by telling my husband it wasn't his fault and telling me it was mine because women can't learn to shut up. We all laughed it off and followed him to our table. We looked at the menu and waited for a waitress. The owner came back by and the waitress walked by as well, but they didn't take our order, just continued to make sexist and demeaning statements (such as "why can't you control your women" and "do you really take her everywhere? I'm sorry for you" and "why haven't you found her off button") When the waitress finally came to take our order we tried to ask questions and were interrupted with "so do you want to order or not". I'm not sure what the real issue was here, maybe they weren't expecting out of town clientele on a Thursday?? Regardless of why they were all in a bad mood, there is no reason to stop in for a mediocre burger when you are going to be treated like dirt. We went across the street to Owl Cafe and we were greeted warmly where we enjoyed a nice meal!

In our vacation's down time, I would channel surf and would often be watching Food Network. Lo and behold while we were visiting New Mexico, Food Network's Throwndown with Bobby Flay was showing. In the show, it seemed like the green chile burger is a must try. So, my husband and I trekked to the place to try it out. The place has great ambiance. What I like the most is that the owner himself will try to seat you. Yes, we saw Manny! :D He's a pretty good guy. I didn't think the place is too pricey since they give you a huge burger. Nom!

I am so glad I stopped here. This was a find. Getting close to a major highway and chain restaurant hell, I was looking for some lunch and this place happened to be in the perfect location. They are known for their Green Chile Cheeseburger. In fact the owner threw down with Bobby Flay on his Food Network show Throwdown with Bobby Flay and won off of this menu item. When in San Antonio, do as the San Antone's do. What else was I going to order? Cooked medium, with a side of fries, the burger comes heaped with green chile, onions, tomatoes and mustard on a nice soft bun. I ordered a side of fries and an iced tea. The burger came out nice and pink. This is not fast food as the sign says upon walking in. You will wait for your food and you will like it. If you happen to be down here, stop in. It will stop you from having to go to McDonalds on the way up Highway 25.

Sharon reviews Buckhorn, San Antonio, New Mexico Being a person raised in rural New Mexico, green chile cheeseburgers are a staple as are the little out of the way places that serve them. The Buckhorn serves one of the best green chile cheeseburgers that I have ever eaten, and I have eaten a lot. I used to believe that Blake's Lotaburger was the best, but The Buckhorn is right up there. If you are ever in the Socorro, New Mexico area, perhaps on your way south to Las Cruces or going north towards Albuquerque, you have to stop here. It is about 1.5 hour drive from Albuquerque in San Antonio, New Mexico. Be warned though, it keeps odd hours. I have never gone when it has been closed, I stick to evenings like Friday and Saturdays. It usually closes at 8ish. It may be closed on holidays. Basically, it is run by a family so you have to understand that they have lives too! Also the wait, it is worth it, but it is a wait sometimes. It makes you more hungry anyway and so the burger is better! First, the atmosphere. It is very interesting. If you like cabin in the woods like, taxidermy cougars and kitch, you will love it! I loved it. Tiny place, but a nice bar to sit at and sometimes there is a band in the back room. There is a lot to look at. Now the food - order the specialty - the green chile cheeseburger and the fries. I like to order a root beer to go along with it. DELISH. It is very big so you can share, but I don't I eat the whole thing. I share fries though, can't stuff it all in! The buns are big and I only eat one bun, so that helps. You have to stop on in because the owner - Manny - will be there and he is great to talk to. Hope to see you there one day!

First off - Don't even think about ordering anything else - This is the place for green chile cheeseburgers. Made with Hatch chiles, and meat that was freshly ground that day! Second - You must be patient, very patient. You come in and if it is busy they serve in the order you come in and everybody waiting keeps track of what the order of the line is, no matter where you wait. Everybody knows and it is up to you to know even though you are not standing or sitting in a line to honor the line and be like a local who knew everybody by name. Be social introduce yourself and make friends with the others in the line. (if you are in a hurry, just skip lunch and move on) ---------------- Yep it is worth the wait. Yep you will meet some very interesting characters. Yep it is true local color. Yep I would go back. Yep I would tell you to give it a try. Yep it looks like a well used country cabin, and You better get there while it is still standing!

Saw this place on Throwdown and wanted to go if I ever got a chance. I was able to stop by for dinner while driving from Las Cruces to Albuquerque for work. I love green chiles and their aren't any better ones than New Mexico's. The green chile burger was perfect and everything I wanted it to be, simple and full of green chile goodness. The fries were ok but that wasn't why I was there, so I am not knocking them for it. Manny was there so that was pretty cool too. The atmosphere was great and being off the beaten path in a small town makes it that much better. If I get a chance to drive past San Antonio, NM again I will definitely be going back. If not I will have fond memories of Manny's chile burger.

There's a lively debate over the best green-chili cheeseburger, with 2 of the major contenders across the road from one another in the unlikely spot of San Antonio, NM. This review applies to both the Buckhorn and the Owl; we ate at both on the same day in order to judge. I expected them to be similar; I was surprised to find how different they were. The Owl's patty has a distinctive flat-top grill look and taste; we both thought it was a tad bit too small. The Buckhorn's patty was much larger but it lacked personality. We did not see a big difference in the cheese, maybe because it was pretty well obscured by the green chilies at both places. The Owl's chilies were a standout; definitely not for the faint of heart. Just the right texture, fresh tasting, packing quite a punch. The Buckhorn's chilies were milder and more tender. Buns were similar quality but the Buckhorn's did a better job of holding the whole thing together. Had French fries for the side at both places and the Buckhorn was the clear winner in this category. Fresh potatoes, not over-cooked - simply great. Atmosphere is a toss-up; service was a bit better at the Owl. Prices at both are ridiculously cheap for the quality. And the winner is........ My partner liked the Buckhorn the best. She liked the thicker patty, the milder chilies, and the way it stayed together when eating. I liked the Owl best. The flavor of the patty (however, next time I'll go with the double patty option) and the kick from the chilies. Plus, I don't mind my burger being messy when it's loaded with goodies. No clear winner and you can't go wrong with either place.

The burgers were delicious, but overpriced. Fries are billed separate, my family shared a basket of fries, we had three burgers and a hot dog (with no bun because they ran out). Our bill was nearly $40 and we waited over an hour for our food. We will not be going back, the burgers were good but not worth the price or wait.

Heard of this place through friends, checked the reviews and had to try it. Went on a Saturday afternoon and was seated immediately. Service was prompt, beer was cold and a decent collection. No craft beers but we weren't there for the beverages. What we were there for was, of course, the Buckhorn Green Chile Cheeseburger and we were not disappointed. Perhaps it was the casual, roadhouse type ambience that begs you to try the burger, the interaction with the owners coming by to chat and the variety of clientele that just made it a great fun experience. Burger was juicy, huge, and loaded with green chile, pickle, tomato, lettuce and mustard. All balancing out just right. Fries on the side were fresh but just a tad bit greasy. Good if you like them that way. If you like the adventure of dining in out of the way burger joints and are not in a hurry, this is the place. 5 stars for the overall experience.

I was in New Mexico on a family visit/ Mexican food pilgrimage and this was my first stop of many in the Land of Enchantment. My cousin told me about this place and said I needed to try the green chili cheese burger on my way to Las Cruces from Albuquerque. It did not disappoint. The burger was the prefect balance of meat, bun, cheese, condiment, spice, and green chili. If you've never had good New Mexican chili it is hard to explain. All I can say is that like a smell from your childhood, you can always remember the taste of perfect green chili and Buckhorn nails it. I ate here shortly after opening on a weekday. I've heard it can get very busy and the wait can be a long time. Luckily there was only two other people there so I got in and out. I will definitely be stopping next time I am in New Mexico.

The Green Chile Burger was my favorite burger that Ive ever had. The burger itself was cooked to perfection on a griddle. Aside from some pretty basic toppings (tomato, onions and mustard), this burger comes with perfectly sauteed green chile's on top that is like nothing I have ever tried. The perfect amount of heat mixed bursting with flavor makes this place a must try. After finishing one I quickly ordered another. If your with in a three hour drive its worth the trip!

Been back to the Buckhorn 4 times since I wrote the original review. It's very consistent. Great green chile cheeseburgers. Note that this is slow food, though, as everything is made to order, so plan on a loooong meal. Worth the wait.

We were in Socorro for training and were told we needed to come down here and try out the Buckhorn. Glad we did. If looks were ever deceiving, this would be the time and place. But, as cliche's go, don't judge a book by it's cover. The Buckhorn burger was delicious. Unpretentious establishment that knows what it does well, and does it! I will let the burger speak for itself, or you can read the review from QG magazine or watch the Throwdown with Bobby Flay (Food Network) episode if you need more prodding.

for a dive, the Buckhorn burger is pretty good. they only cook the meat well. I typically like mine medium rare. The burger didn't seem dense either which I think is pretty good. I wasn't to impressed with the onion rings. I guess considering the location of the place, it is a gem.

I stopped here on the way to Albuquerque from Alamogordo. The Owl was closed that day, so I stopped here (it's across the street). There is signage everywhere and framed newspaper/magazine articles proclaiming this shack home of the #7 burger in the United States. "Overrated" would not even begin to describe the burger I received. I ordered the Green Chile burger and fries, which at $12 was not particularly cheap. The fries were soggy and oversalted, clear evidence of either not having been properly fried, prepared prior to frying, or thawed out improperly from the freezer. So salty I could barely eat five of them before I had to push them aside. So, the burger - it was large, but that's about it. The bun it sat on was undersized compared to the patty, so the sandwich fell apart when I picked it off the plate, leaving bits of hamburger patty behind. The meat was tender but quite dry, burnt, and overcooked. Clearly, the cook was pressing down on the patty with his turner, a no-no in the world of burgers, since that pushes all the fat out of the burger. The green chile (definitely not fresh) made the bun so soggy that halfway through I had to pick apart the sandwich and eat the components individually. Service was non-existent. The place was deserted but it took me 5 minutes of standing by the door until the server even looked in my direction, and another 15 minutes until they were ready to take my order (the menu is ONE PAGE!). I realize there is a sign by the front door saying that this establishment is not a "fast food restaurant," but my experience here was so subpar "slow food" would have been an overstatement. I realize that if you're from a rural area where independent restaurants are rare this may seem like a gem, but objectively it is not. I've even had better service (and food) in the mom-and-pop cafes elsewhere in the state. I will not be back. Maybe I'll try the Owl someday, though.

Food is good but served on plastic plates with plastic utensils. Always a ridiculously long wait. What is that about? $6.50 for a burger for our 3 year old. Not happy about that. The building is in rough shape and the bathrooms are dirty. We won't need to go back.

We drove up north to attend the 2012 Festival of the Cranes and decided to stop at Manny's Buckhorn for lunch. We were fortunate to meet the owner, Bobby Olquin, soon after arriving. His friendliness and charm made our lunch a pleasant experience. Our friends from Albuquerque joined us for a delightful lunch. We all had the restaurants specialty, burgers. My wife and I had the official specialty, the Green Chile Cheeseburger. The burgers were absolutely scrumptious. Our basket of fries to share were also very good. It helped make the trip very worthwhile, since we were then treated to views of thousands of Sandhill Cranes and Snow Geese at the Bosque del Apache. Would definitely return to dine at the 'Buckhorn', and to visit the Bosque!

The Buckhorn is good, but the chile tastes like it is out of a can. The fries are ok, but they usually skimp on the cheese and they taste like they were frozen. Also, this place is expensive! You can feed 5 at the Owl Bar for around $45. That same $45 feeds 3.5 people at the Buckhorn. The Food Network has given this place an ego and made it suck.

The burgers are tasty, large, simple with ample green chile. We went and found Manny, the owner and chef out front relaxing. He is like a Hispanic Don Rickles who starting insulting us the minute we arrived up until we left...and they pride themselves in not charging for the entertainment (the insults). Manny is the biggest Mexican I have ever met and makes things interesting. The burgers are worth the visit and the insults are free. Drop by have a burger and watch out for Manny as he can dish out the insults and kicked Bobby Flay's butt.

I would like to give Buckhorn 5 stars but I can't. Having only had one GCCB in my entire life, I can't make a judgment that Buckhorn is "as good as it gets." But it's very, very close. I love this place. Will try to update this review to give more details but for now, I'm out of time. If I'm ever, ever in the area again, I will be there. For fairness though, I will certainly also try the joint across the street. For a roadhouse in the middle of nowhere, Buckhorn has a respectable beer selection too. 4.5 stars.

We were on a roadtrip down I-25 and had heard about the Owl (another bar and burger place across the street from the Buckhorn). I checked out the reviews of the Owl the night before we'd pass through town and there were several REALLY bad reviews of the Owl (on Yelp and other sites), but I didn't see any bad reviews of the Buckhorn. So.. for the burger. We both went with the classic green chile cheeseburger and agreed that it was very good. Whether or not it is the 7th best in the country is debatable. I've had LOTS of better burgers, but this one is tasty, cheesy goodness. Yum. And the fact that it's served up in the middle of nowhere at a little bar that's been around for 70 years.. that just adds to the charm of it all. Is it a bit overhyped? Yes. But if you're passing by around lunchtime, it's a great place to stop for a burger. Don't expect anything fancy and you won't be diappointed.

Went right after it aired on food network throw down with bobby flay. It was crazy waited for about twenty minutes to get seated. but worth the wait. Probably one of the best green Chile cheese burgers i have Had been back a few times, stopped on the way back from Las Vegas NV, with my daughter and her friend, they said the same thing, one of the best burgers they ever had. Oh and they serve beer! can't have a good green Chile cheese burger with out a cold beer!!!

Totally bummed. Made the drive from Phoenix to try this place (as well as others) and they were closed. It was the Saturday of 4th of July weekend. We sat outside with other people waiting for it to open and it never did. No sign. No nothing.

Hole-in-the-wall dining at its down-and-dirty best! Third time's a charm -- but, then again, so were my first two visits to this cozy little bar & grill out in the middle of the New Mexican nowhere. Took my wife and her folks out tonight and treated them to cheeseburgers ranked 7th in the nation by GQ magazine. I promise you that ain't no hype, neither. This eatery came to my attention when Manny's Buckhorn Burger beat out Bobby Flay's green chile cheeseburger in a throw-down on the Food Network. Since then, we've made the effort to eat here every time we visit the in-laws. It's an hour drive to get there but well worth it. The food is always great but it truly excels on nights the owner, Bob, works the grill. A nationally-ranked harmonica player, he hands over chef duties twice a week to jam with his band, truly a treat in itself. There's a full bar and a nice selection of beer, too. And did I mention the food is great? If you find yourself in the Land of Enchantment, go out of your way and treat yourself to one of the most enchanting dives in the land.

I don't know if I'd say it's the 7th best burger in the U.S. but it sure was good. Now the big question, which is better, here or across the street at the Owl. We ate at the Owl yesterday. You can see my review of the Owl here as well. Here's my opinion. The actual burger was tastier here, but the green chili was more flavorful at the Owl. The Buckhorn was a couple of bucks less expensive, but I'd say the better of the two goes to the Owl. If you're in the area, check them out. You can't go wrong with either place.

You'll get a good burger at the Buckhorn, but for a GREAT burger, you need only cross the street to the Owl. The Buckhorn may very well serve a great burger on occasion, and if Food Network's Bobby Flay comes to town they likely pull out all the stops. But for the general non-famous (yet!) diner like me, the burger was just average/good. While the patty was formed of excellent ground beef, it was woefully underseasoned which was noticeable even under the condiments and green chile. While the top bun had the look of having been toasted, the bottom bun was actually cold to the touch. What made it worse was the fact that the green chile looked and tasted like it came not from the roaster but from the "Bueno Foods" can (hence the neon "Bueno Chile" sign on the wall). The bright green, flavorless chile didn't compare to the darker, roasted-looking and roasted-tasting chile that I like to see (and more importantly, taste) on my green chile cheeseburgers. The rings and fries were just OK, and amazingly similar to those frozen fare offered at the Owl. Although unlike the Owl, the onion rings at the Buckhorn were a bit too difficult to chew for my taste. Finally, a word about atmosphere and service. There was one very friendly and very over-worked waitress to serve a full house. At almost $30 for our two-person check, this seems very chinsy and not fair to the eager clientele like us who were lured by the national attention the Buckhorn has recently received. The atmosphere is OK, but it seems more about the Buckhorn's notariety than whatever original charm it might have had before its ego got a bit ahead of it, and before publicity got more important than the value and quality of the dining experience it offers.

Okay, so Bobby Flay took it easy on him, but hey, the owner of this place makes one mean green chile cheeseburger! Please see my previous review of the Owl, right across the street. Seriously, the Buckhorn has a better tasting burger in my opinion. The patties were thicker, cooked well. If they're open, to me, they edge out the Owl despite them, being a little more expensive.

cant beleive this place doesnt have more reviews. peeps here in nm havent heard of yelp. well everyone knows this guy battled bobby flay and won, so of course i had to try since i love a good burger. the sign says #7 best burger in america so my mouth was just watering by then. well talk about love at 1st bite, this is the best burger i ever had! just the blend of good quality meat,cheese,green chili,onions,mustard went perfect together. the green chili was just right to me, gave u a little kick but not overpowering and didnt take over the burger. i was going to abq and nodding my head yea! all the way with a big burger smile. just a little pricey with fries and a drink $12-$13 but u get what u payed for! well worth it

Burgers are good here. Fries are ok. This place is not why you come to San Antonio. In San Antonio you should be chasing a green chili cheese burger w/ a side of green chili cheese fries. The best are not found here.
