Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

If I'm not eating it in El Paso I assume the Mexican food is not truly Mexican. Being that this restaurant was next to my hotel I reluctantly walked in. All in all it wasn't bad. Service was great. Restaurant was clean and well maintained. I kept it simple: shredded beef tacos with rice and pinto beans. Not bad. Still not what I expect Mexican food should be but the food was tasty and served promptly. Keep it simple and you won't be disappointed.

We got here right at closing time for dinner. Server was efficient and polite - professional waiter! Thin chips with some dry rub sprinkled on top- very interesting! Red salsa was hot! Guacamole was fresh! House Margaritas were good and strong. Refried beans on my plate was excellent!!!! Can't remember the main dish because I filled up on the chips and guacamole! Price was reasonable. I'd go back again if I'm Mexican food is what I want!!

Five gals from Texas reluctantly rolled up into the parking lot of Tia Juana's in little ol' Roswell, NM for dinner at an off time. We opted to sit on their expansive outdoor patio, but quickly changed our minds when we saw how dirty all of the outside tables were. We each ordered something different - taco salad, chile relleno, cheese enchiladas...everything was surprisingly very good! The margaritas were also very good. We were pleasantly surprised. Shame on us for assuming a non-Texas Mexican restaurant would be subpar.

Service was great! From the time we sat down to getting our meals, the staff was very attentive and took very good care of us. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone, food was great, our waitress Micki was awesome!
(5)Aaron P.
Food was decent, rice was way over cooked or something it was crunchy and hard in some spots, it's a nice building, waitress was very clumsy and awkward. Spilled water all over the table twice trying to refill our waters and didn't even realize she did till we moved our cups and she came back. Chips were nothing special salsa was ultra spicy.

TERRIBLE SERVICE is the term to describe this place. I could write a novel on my bad experience but I am the kind of person who doesn't like to complain but I had to walk out of this place due to being ignored and disrespected by the bar tender and that's too bad. From the other reviews I've read the manager of this restaurant is not doing his/her job properly and the owner must be weak to let this happen-just a guess on this but I would be appalled if I owned a business that treated my customers like this place. AVOID!

Check your receipt very carefully with regard to tipping. If you follow their stupid math you may end up paying a 30% or more tip.

Ok so I'm from El Paso so I know a thing or two about Mexican Food or at least I should! I'm actually in town for 3 days on business and I was told by the front counter lady at my super 8 that it was the best place for Mexican food here so I took her up on her word I went with another coworker of mine and service for about 8pm was rather good.... her name was Mercedes and she was pleasant and took prompt care of our orders and waters I had the 2 Chile rellenos and they were pretty dam good! Twoards the top the seeds were coming big time and things got hot but it was good non the less I also had the order of Sopapias? And they were amazing as well, I'm a little used to having them dumped in cinnamon sugar but this was a pleasant venture having them plain with honey. If your passing through and are craving green chilies or good Mexican food, I suggest you stop here for sure!
(4)Joel p.
Dry beans & rice.. The combo plate was generic, and left much to be desired. Service was prompt, and the server was great
(2)Sheila E.
Excellent Mexican food, fast and efficient service every time! Been there about 8 times to date. Top shelf cantina, excellent also.
(5)Ariadne B.
Decided to stop here because the other restaurant we were initially going to was closed. Service was lacking. Upon arrival, we weren't greeted by the 2 waitresses that clearly saw us walk in. After a few minutes, one waitress finally acknowledged us and had us wait some more. The restaurant was mostly empty so there was no reason for this. I ordered the chile verde, a good choice if you are into spicy food. I am, so I'll say it was quite tasty. It's served with homemade flour tortillas, which were delish! They could've added more rice though..
(3)Riki P.
Horrible place!! Worst service I've had in a while! Chips were horrible if that's even possible! I would not recommend!!
(1)Jerry P.
An excellent experience all the way. Jennifer was very pleasant to our group, doing a good job of keeping drinks filled and offering suggestions. The chili verde burrito with green chili was super!, I'd come back again in a heartbeat!
(5)Tyler O.
would love to give this place 0 zero stars but Yelp will not let me.....service is by far the worse I have ever seen.....not sure how this place is still in business.....my only thoughts are because locals do not know any different. Gave them a Second chance and it will be my last
(1)Christina R.
After a long day of traveling, we tried Tia Juana's for a late dinner. Super friendly waiter and great food!
(5)Susana C.
Don't let the 3 stars food you, this was actually a good restaurant for Roswell. I would give them more stars but service was slow. I am beginning to think that is the norm in this small town. I came here for lunch because it was so close to the Hampton Inn where we are staying. I waited for exactly 6 minutes before the Hostess acknowledged and seated me. The restaurant was not busy, just a handful of tables were occupied. Not even the servers offered a greeting as they walked by. For that, they lost the 2 stars. I ordered a cup of caldo de res and a chicken enchilada and tamale both with red sauce. The caldo was served with rice and warm flour tortillas. The soup was delicious and full of tender beef and veggies and the tortillas were pretty good. I didn't bother with the mushy looking rice. The enchilada and tamale were a different story. They were the best I have ever tasted anywhere due to the amazing red spicy red sauce. Yum yum. I will go back just for that. The bar area itself is pretty fun and they have frozen margarita machines. So far, this has been my favorite meal since arriving in Roswell.
(3)Jennifer G.
If I could give it negative stars I would. It not only was the worst Mexican food I have ever had but it ranks as some of the worst food I have EVER had!
(1)Melissa C.
The service was fine and the manager was nice enough to let our little dog sit on the patio with us. The refried beans were from a can and did not have any salt. The Enchilada sauce just tasted like chili powder and the queso was really gross, like it had been sitting out for a long time. We have better Mexican food in Portland, Oregon.
(2)David D.
I was traveling through Roswell and staying at a nearby motel. Wasn't expecting much but was pleasantly surprised. This is a really cool place. Great atmosphere. Late on a Thursday night so the crowd was light. The service was very good and the burritos were delicious and a great value. I will stop in on the way back.
(5)James R.
Looked ok going but what a big disappointment! First ordered Gin / tonic simple drink but not for this place had to send it back something spoiled in drink? the food bland , cold, and and to send back. Chips, salsa and water no complaints.
(1)Christopher R.
Our waitress was as high as a kite! She tried to take our gin & tonic order as a gin & tonic margarita (?), then asked if we wanted ground beef fajitas. Was aloof to questions and seriously out of it. Stop smoking at work! Decor and vibe are nice. The food was OK. A whole basket of bottom of the bag chips... Too bad because the salsa was tasty. Very good options on menu, poor execution on the plate.

The worst stop I have made on our trip from Charleston, SC to San Diego, CA!!!! We were burnt out from a 10 hour leg of our trip and this place was closest to our hotel for the evening. This place was annoying from the moment we walked in. A kid was the host and glanced at us without saying anything, I actually wondered if we were going to be seated. It was about 10 minutes to get a table despite many being visually empty. We did get a table and waited some more for a waitress. A young woman bustled by us seemingly aggravated and let us know she would help us because she had no clue where our waitress was. A minute later a different woman comes to our table to let us know she would be our waitress. We ordered an appetizer quickly figuring that we could score some food before our infant woke up. Sadly we were mistaken. We did have a pleasant view of the bustling nice waitress that was not ours, seat and feed people full entrees before our appetizer came out even though they arrived a good 30 minutes after we placed our order. We finally got it the second we were going to walk out. Interesting. Our waitress did not offer a water refill or salsa and chips. She disappeared again. Our food showed up maybe 45 minutes later and did not even taste good. It looked ok, but looks were so deceiving. A 3rd waitress must have noticed the look on my face as I sat there hungry, upset, and further annoyed because my infant was waking up, came and asked if everything was ok. I told her that it wasn't and what was going on. She looked genuinely concerned and left to get a manager. Conveniently the waitress shows up to take our bill. We paid so we could get out of there quickly...sigh...did not happen because AGAIN she disappears and we spend another 20 minutes just waiting to get out of there???!!! Manager apparently didn't care or got caught up dealing with another patron because they never came back and we needed to get out of there. Beyond ridiculous. I definitely do not recommend this place. I will post photos of our order and even photos of how much food we did not eat! Glad we only wasted $20.
(1)Lizette B.
Horrible service. Waited over 45 min for food, customers who sat down after us got their food before us. Even complaining didn't bring us our dinner. 10 min later still no food, we literally got up and walked out.
(1)Mike H.
In a word disappointed. I ordered the Chicken Fajitas and an unsweetened tea. The amount of chicken was just enough to call it Chicken Fajitas. For this I was charged 17.94 with TTL. To top it off the service was slow and I had to wave someone down for silverware. I would have been better off eating a frozen diner from the hotel at least my expectations would have been in line with the meal.
(1)Will K.
So I really did wanna believe this place was going to be better than some of the reviews, but alas; the tales of poor service held up. I was greeted by my waitress with a question of whether I had been served or not. A simple question like how much a margarita costs was greeted with a smug "I don't know." She must have really not wanted a tip, since she talked me out of the more expensive margarita to the cheaper house margarita. The manager seemed very concerned when I told him I hadn't received water after being there for 25 minutes. Food arrived after 45 minutes of being there, but that didn't do me much good without any silverware. I don't mind when a restaurant is busy or understaffed, but at least tell me its gonna be slow. Not sure if they were understaffed or just didn't care, but definitely wouldn't recommend this Food was okay if you really like salt. I will at least give them that they had really tasty chips and salsa
(2)JR F.
Nice looking restaurant. Friendly service but the food is sub par in my opinion. I ordered the ground beef tacos and they were very bland. My wife got a salad strongly recommended by the server and it also had no flavor.
(1)Drew C.
Enjoyed the shredded chicken tacos. My party liked the shrimp del fuego and Juana's tacos. The margaritas were too sweet, but if you ask for them to be made by scratch.
(4)Justin M.
Went in on a normal Tuesday evening and had the worst experience here. They were out of rice, beef, and many other things. After about 45 minutes of waiting our food came out cold. Terrible experience, we probably won't be going back.
(1)Jess C.
This only get 2 stars because the service was better the second time. My husband and I have tried to eat here twice and both times it just didn't go very well. The first time my fajitas were sitting in the window and were inedible. Had to send them back and listen to the expo scream for food runners. Fajitas were once again tough but hey, they were ok. Bottled beer were semi cold which kind of stinks when you've worked a 12 hour shift and really need a cold beer...DO NOT GO INTO THE BATHROOMS!! I saw the most disgusting, evil things in the women's bathroom...which makes me wonder if they have only been opened for 1 year what the heck does the back of house look like?! Scary thought... Second time we stopped for some queso and their appy sampler. Got two margaritas which were very yummy. The queso? Ball park cheese...eww. We sent it back. The sampler? Not good at all. Kind of hard to mess up fried food... Bathrooms? Just don't. Once again gross and not maintained whatsoever. I'd just skip this place.
(2)M W.
This was the 4th place that we tried for dinner, the other 3 being busts of closed or out of business. Not Tia Juana's fault. The Mexican food was adequate. We both had enchiladas which were good. The margarita was very weak on tequila and way too sweet. I ordered an extra shot to put into the drink, which balanced it out.
(3)Susan C.
Being from Abq., my hubby and I were hoping to find some authentic Mexican food. Not New Mexican, but Mexican. For anyone visiting it should be clarified, this is a New Mexican restaurant, not authentic Mexican. Some may not notice the differences, or care for that matter but, we do. That aside the service was timely and good, not exactly bubbling with personality, but efficient and professional which is fine with me. Both myself and my son had combo plates, tons of food! Homemade tortillas were tasty. Beans were good and freshly made (not just out of the can) and the Pork Colorado was very yummy. My husbands Chili Rubbed Steak was cooked perfectly and nicely seasoned. The only downfall is the facilities aren't very well maintained.
(4)Justin G.
I was impressed by the atmosphere, decor and super friendly staff of this restaurant. I should have only ordered chips and salsa and it would have been a five star rating in my personal opinion, my wife ordered a taco and cheese enchilada and I ordered a beef Chimichanga and Chile relleno not one bit impressed with the food.
(3)Kimberly H.
Meh. Not memorable. The only reason I'm rating this a two is for the chips and salsa
(2)Joe B.
I was pleasantly surprised with my meal at Tia Juana's. My family and I ate dinner here during a 12 hour stopover in Roswell. The atmosphere and ambiance is nice. The chips and salsa are delicious (as other reviewers have noted), and my enchiladas were delicious. (I ordered Juana's enchiladas with a sample of each type of sauce--red, green, and sour cream--and all were very tasty in their own way. My wife had the pozole and enjoyed it as well. Definitely worth the stop.
(4)Ann E.
Atmosphere is great here but the food is barely 2 star. The only reason we keep coming back is for HH with local friends. Service is good...maybe they need a new chef.
(2)Tish F.
The food here is really good. A bit on the salty side. Service is usually pretty good.
(4)Peggy H.
Spicy! The food here was GREAT - we had the Mexican Flag Enchiladas and the Beef Fajitas. Both were very good - we enjoyed every bite. Great presentation - good taste. The service was good. Only complaint - and this has never happened to me before - the salsa was almost too hot to eat! Server said that it varies based on the jalapenos - whew this was spicy hot! Otherwise, really enjoyed the informal atmosphere.
(4)John M.
Good Guacamole and fantastic service. I was here from 3-6 working :) at the bar and it went from quiet to busy. Free wifi, a nice selection of tequila and beer and decent food (my usual crispy chicken tacos). Sort of a chain-ish concept but right next door to a few hotels which is nice to be able to walk to.
(3)Phyllis R.
Our server was friendly! The chips were wonderful, hot from the fryer and perfectly crisp, and the salsa was nice. My husband got the chili rellenos and was very very pleased with them. My son and I shared the lime, chipotle rib dinner, and when the meal came, it was without the potato casserole, and they said that they'd run out, but maybe I wanted a substitution? So they were good about that. The charros, or fried beans were wonderful as a substitute, just spicy enough, and smoky with bacon and hot all the way through. The ribs tasted wonderful, spicy and so tender they literally fell off the bone; however, the kitchen hadn't actually heated them all the way through. And the calabacitas that did arrive with them were badly undercooked, half the slices were all out raw. I suspect that if we'd gotten the more common meals and combinations, we would have been better off than splurging for the higher end meal. The ribs were so good, though, it was a shame they didn't treat them well.
(3)Randy W.
I'm having the combo plate and each component is very good. The rice is a bit dry from sitting but the waitresses attitude makes up for it. Definitely coming back when I come through here again it's a must.
(4)Sara F.
The chips and salsa that were provided at no cost were absolutely exceptional! I loved the decor of the place, as well as the service that was received; our waitress was very personable and it didn't feel like she was being fake with us. She had a real personality and her personality was welcoming and enjoyable. Service was also spot-on with our orders and quick to have everything in front of us as well. The only issue I had was with my actual food... I got a medley of tacos and the ground beef taco was superb, however the shredded beef was a bit on the bland side and the chicken taco seemed like it had no seasoning whatsoever. Would definitely go again, though, if I'm ever back in the Roswell area, especially since it was directly next to our hotel.
(4)Sara S.
Hmmm, mexican food is a very subjective thing. We really like TJs, and go regularly for the fajitas. The tortillas are frickin fantastic. Also the chile colorado. Super spicy and totally yum. I order Corona when I go, and don't seem to have the same delay other reviewers are noting. Service has been super slow, super talkative, or perfect. Just depends on who you get. I've never ordered something I hated. The Chimi is good too. In general, I think it's one of the better places in town to get mexican food. Definitely fajitas.
(4)Jaime L.
Roswell needs to get in touch with this whole Yelp thing. There are places that desperately need yelping, especially since people like ME are the dumbasses that say "omgosh hAY letz do lyk, omg a road trip n stop at lyk, Roswell so we can look at all the aliens n shit!" Tia Juana's is awesome. I ordered their enchiladas EVERYTIME I went. They have a dessert with a deep fried SNICKERS. How much cooler can you get with that? Continue with chips n dip and something else and you get a wonderful meal. Downside: don't fucking eat the seafood, you idiots. ITS THE MIDDLE OF NEW MEXICO.
(4)Kristin L.
Good chips and salsa. We had really fast service, but I read that's not always the case. And it was empty on a Monday night. But! It was fast and I ordered the house taco plate. Mas o menos.
(3)Kathie T.
Great service. Yummy chips. Hubby enjoyed The Mexican Flag enchilada with egg on top. Kids had cheese enchiladas that could feed an adult. Caldo was great, but tad on salty side. Fun interior and atmosphere.
(4)Beth K.
Food and service is so much better than when it was owned by Cattle Baron. Salsa is good and hot. Mexican enchilada plate rocks. Definitely a fan and will keep going back.
(4)Matthew O.
Great food and service for a good price. Try the fish tacos!
(5)Lynn G.
Had not eaten here in many years. Recently started again. Last visit on a Friday night. Waited a long time to be seated, hostess/seating person ignored us. Could not sit where we liked, said it was reserved(we were there 2 hours, the tables were never occupied...hmmm). If you are looking for a place to unwind after a long week, or to converse with family and friends, this is NOT the place for you! The music is SO loud that we could not carry on a conversation. I asked the waitress if it could be turned down, her response was that she would ask, but it may not do any good. She was right, it was never turned down. We waited almost an hour for our food. The order was correct. By the time it arrived I was ready to leave. I had fajitas, he had a combo plate. Both were very tasty. The rellenos with no sauce on them are outstanding! Maybe the best time to go is in the afternoon. Anyway plan on waiting at least 1 to 2 hours whatever time you choose.
(2)Emma J.
The food was amazing! However, the service was absolutely horrible. When we walked in the door no one came to seat us, then when the host came around she sat us at a dirty table and said she'd be back to clean it off, almost 10 minutes later the table was still dirty and she was inside socializing with her coworkers when I walked up to remind her we still had a dirty table. Then, we waited 15 minutes for a server and finally had to go find one just to get our drink order in and we happened to find the manager who seemed unconcerned over the service. After that point, the drinks and appetizer came at a normal pace. But then the waitress never came around to check on us and we had to put in another drink order with a different waiter, who was polite enough to get our drinks. And the prices were not justified at all because of the service alone. All in all, if you want good food, be prepared to wait a loooong time and leave feeling like you just paid to sit at a table.
(1)Princess D.
Blah! This is not the place to go if you are hungry or thirsty. The service is SLOW!!!! The drinks are weak and the food is average to say the least. The sopapillas are yucky. They have is wierd powder stuff on them. They are think and have too much dough. If you are going to order a dring order two at a time as it takes forever to get a drinks as well. On the upside the Mexican music on the patio is good and I had a really good waitress the one time I sat out there.
(1)Francis M.
We chose this place out of a lack of options and its close proximity to our hotel. There isn't much in the way of fine dining in Roswell (fine dining meaning not fast food). The service was good. The food was not. We tasted no real flavor in the jalapeno poppers except for an after-taste of ouch. Yes, jalapenos are supposed to be hot.... but at least give me some flavor with it. The main course (one of the combos, I can't remember which) was nothing to brag about... pretty standard Mexican restaurant combo platter. The real disappointment came with dessert. I excitedly ordered the fried ice cream when I ordered my entree. What I got WAS NOT fried ice cream. It was a ball of ice cream coated in soggy corn flakes... or at least that's what it tasted like. I guess we should have listened to the teenager in the elevator at the hotel who said "it's not that good."
(2)Stanly W.
This restaurant has two distinctions: it is the best looking, and it serves the worst food. If it weren't for the three or four motels built within walking distance, the place would have folded years ago. Worst Mexican food, hands down. Pretty poor service more often than not. And the handful of locals that go there make the experience twice as prosaic as it needs to be. Out of the ten times that I've gone there over the course of seven years, I only had one good meal and one good experience. Glutton for punishment, I guess.
(1)Dean M.
Yes, Tia Juana's can be very hit-and-miss concerning service and its food - especially if you don't know its strengths. So let me give you a few tips. First, don't waste your time with the enchiladas. They overuse a certain spice which many other restaurants in this area of New Mexico also do (wish I knew the name, but I don't.) Also, the rice is mediocre at best. The beans are unique because instead of giving you refried like just about every other Mexican restaurant, they give you a choice of three different choices. That's nice, but they're still nothing to write home about. Now the good. The tortillas here are great. I don't know if they make them on site, but it tastes like they do. They're fresh, tasty, definitely not from a bag. It makes the soft tacos worth it. Their chili colorado is OUTSTANDING. I love it, they got this one down. I keep ordering it in other places, hoping it tastes like it does here. Sometimes it comes close, but rarely. It's rich and not too soupy, it's smooth and not too sharp, and spicy but not too hot. Highly recommended. It's what brings me over here whenever I'm within a 100 miles of Roswell. Also, their chips and salsa are quite good, too. It's a small thing, but it's sad when a Mexican restaurant can't get that right
(4)Traygen B.
During one of my abductions I overheard one of the alien overlords recommend this place. Good tamales, good relleno! Helped with the deeper probing sessions afterwards.
(3)Jim D.
Overall, pretty good for middle of nowhere Roswell. I am an out of towner and had much better. The 4 stars are for the fresh, awesome, homemade tortillas, chips and salsa. Beer was cold and cheap during happy hour. Excellent service. I had the steak/chicken combo fajitas, average.
