As I arrived at the restaurant I ran into one of the managers and said, "Excuse me, we came here on Thursday night at 9:05pm and the doors were locked. We waived at the employees inside from the window that reads the restaurant does not close till 10:30pm and we were ignored. What gives?" The manager was very apologetic and offered us a complimentary dessert. She also made us feel right at home. We ordered the enchiladas and a couple of drinks and sat there watching 'Dancing with the Stars' on the flat screen. Apparently, depending on the nightly managers, it's a crap shoot if they are open or not when they should be open. Honestly, I prefer Jerry's on second.

Don't bother stopping here. Everything was bland and stale except for the green chili, which tasted like green chili.

Been here several times and food is always good but service sucks....again my order messed up and it was a simple potato salad instead of fries....always happens...guess the cook don't read the ticket....and watching tv and waitress comes and changes it and when I said my group was watching she brushed us off cause a "worker" was taking a break and wanted the channel changed....no cares about what the customer was watching but more concern for her co-worker........service one if the worst in Gallup.......made good food horrible and not worth going there....

As a Gallup local I must say, this is probable the most un- friendly place to eat in town. Service is horrible. Save your self the headache!!!

the food here is good but the service could be a little more friendly but this place you can chose to have American or Mexican so there's something for everybody here

I order a Tostada for $7.95 contained no meat refried beans were old the shell placed in not a flat Tostada shell that is proper was microscopic asked for Guacamole on the Side instead brought me Guacamole and chips, Guacamole turning black, brown already old charged me an additional $.4.95. Hands down worst dining experience every. I have traveled East Coast to West Coast. Go to Earl's or any of the other Mexican Restaurants. John D. Las Vegas NV

Avoid this place! The food is tasteless and comes out of a can or the freezer. We actually took about three bites of our meals and then drove to McDonalds. Will give them one star for cleanliness. Other than that, not good.

We were driving through and tried to stop at 3 of the top reviewed places in Gallup, they were all closed at 7pm on a Sunday. We ran into this place. The atmosphere quiet and spacious. We were seated quickly, attended to quickly and checked on by multiple staff members. Our food was out within ten minutes lacking uniqueness but non the less delicious and our waiter was excellent. I highly recommend this if you enjoy quick friendly service!

Food is excellent, but the service was horrible. They had one server for the whole restaurant on Valentine's Day. The wait time was horrible. We had to keep flagging people down and even when we did, they flat out ignored us. Bad, just bad. I have never experienced customer service to be this horrible here before. Maybe I'll change my review if I visit another time and service improves.

On the old Route 66, this large restaurant (think Denny's size) is not much and most menu items are a Sysco product or similar. But the service has always been friendly and kind ( at least in all my dealings anyway) And it is decent beans & rice, tex-mex style food. Been eating here for years now, and usually stop here for breakfast or lunch whenever I'm in the area. Nothing fancy about it at all but it is inexpensive by Nor-Cal standards and I have always left full and happy. Never experienced to long of a wait, and have had the same waitress over different years wait on me - which is nice as it shows longevity. Good Green Chili, the Red is okay. Decent tacos and tamles, consistently good huevos (the usual) and the rice and beans are fair. Again this is basic tex-mex rice and beans. Had better yes, but definitely had worse. Cold bottle beer and strong black coffee. This is a safe bet for most travelers passing through and as I mentioned, I've eaten here at least a dozen times over the past 15 years or so. 2.5 Stars - rounded up for longevity and appreciate them being open when I'm in town. 00256

Okay, it was a struggle to give a 4 star review. I really wanted to give a four star review but I couldn't justify that kind of rating. We were seated promptly and the servers were attentive and friendly. We were served chips and salsa on a very small plate and the menu mentioned that we only get one serving of chips and salsa....or we will be charged extra. Most places will give you unlimited servings of chips and salsa, plus my boys go through chips and salsa like there's no tomorrow. The chips and salsa were like Tostitos chips served with Pace picante sauce. I was hoping for home made tortilla chips and freshly made salsa. The ticket time for our food was long, but I ordered the stuffed sopapilla with red chile.....it was ginormous and delicious! You will not leave hungry if you order the stuff sopapilla! The food was good and service was good but the long wait and lack luster chips & salsa warrant this place a 3 star review. Give this place try at least once.

Been here several times and it is not good. Got a sausage breakfast burrito the last time and it was huge, but mostly potatoes and very little sausage (I think there was some)! Located in a bad neighborhood, as if you could tell being that it was in Gallup! Many, many better New Mexican restaurants in town.

If you want great service, and the best food in Gallup I would recommend Jerry's Cafe. The manager or whoever she was is extremely rude. She got mad at an Elderly Man for using the bathroom. Telling him it's for customers only. The server told her he's a regular here and his wife is sitting at the table. She didnt even apologize!!! If she don't want people using her bathrooms she needs to put a lock on them. I'm at my table across the restaurant and I can still hear her telling people the bathroom isn't public. She should be worrying about her customers and maybe greeting people. BTW Jerry's has the best green chili in town!!!

Service was great I can not complain about that at all!!! But the food wasn't the best you could tell it wasn't authentic Mexican and I'm from Southern California you could tell everything was frozen or canned food will not be going back for the food or the salsa that tasted like straight Pace brand that they got from the store GROSS!!!!

You don't expect to fine great food in a small stop over town like Gallup and we didn't at the El Sombrero. "Known for its Fine Authentic New Mexican Food" , we found the service to be friendly, but the food to be lacking -- traditonal dishes were bland while the green chilli was very hot.

If you want good New Mexican food this is it. I had the Carne Adovada Burrito and an Enchalada both were really good. Service was good too and the price was very reasonable.

Passing through New Mexico we decided to stop off on Route 66 and grab some mexican food. There wasn't much around here and it showed. We stopped at El Sombrero and overall, it was just ok. When we first walked in, we noticed that there was no music playing, very quiet, unlike most mexican restaurants. The server was friendly enough, but the place felt rather stale. I got a tamale plate with rice and beans, which wasn't bad, but kind of bland. They charged extra for more chips and salsa and they didn't have margaritas. Well, they did have them but they had some kind of wine instead of tequila. The enchiladas looked good but everyone left with the same 'eh' attitude. But like I said, there's not much food on I-40 in New Mexico.

When traveling from San Diego to my parents in Colorado, we always plan a stop to visit El Sombrero Restaurant in Gallup. This 'locals' spot has been serving since the early 40's I believe. So please, please put your gentle traveler hat on, be kind, understanding, go with the flow and just let the evening unfold. Enjoy what you're served and know this place is home.

A Decent Place for New Mexico Chile Virgins, and Depending on Your Tastes, the Place may be Great 1 star of 1 for atmosphere .8 star of 1 for cleanliness 1.2 star of 2 for food .4 star of 1 for service Seven others shared a table, playing CEng's Yelp! Food Game. Rate your dinner one to five stars. We ate across the menu's dishes cleverly named for New Mexico towns, and numbered in the Roman/Arabic tradition. People ate dish numbers 10, 13, 31, 9, 1, 16, and green chile with beans. Average score 2.7. This converts to 1.2 on the CEng scale above. If portions are important, nobody went hungry and one of us left one quarter of their #1 "El Sombrero Grande" meal on their plate. The people at the table are no strangers to the southwest. Five are native-born Arizonans, raised on southwestern fare. The other three had at least 32 years of Arizona living among them. In spite of relatively low food marks for a restaurant founded in 1948, El Sombrero has a lot going for it. The ambiance is nice. Artful interior lighting, plenty of non-stereotypical Mexico-related art on the walls, nice azulejo tiling for wall trim, and a pretty quiet place to sup. The chips appeared mass-produced, but had good flavor, especially with the mild red salsa served with them. If you're on a sodium-restricted diet, forget about the chips. They arrive very salty. A diner has no salt control - except to add more. I ate the green chile with beans. New Mexico soils grow chiles that can be ferocious. Ferocious and delicious. At El Sombrero the mild green chile comes New Mexico style - roasted chiles with a tiny amount of tender cubed pork. Or, one can add cooked pink beans to the chile, as I did. This was good. I'd suggest this dish to someone taking their first dive into the chile pool. Bright green, very good chile flavor, but not steam-whistle-blowing hot. No lingering and growing afterburn. The bowl had two small strips of un-removed chile skin/wax, and two stem shreds. For me, this showed these were roasted, fresh chiles, not canned ones. El Sombrero is decent. Not a bad place to eat, and it's got enough quiet southwest ambiance for a quiet date. If you're impatient, think twice about this place. The service had someone I consider very patient staring at his watch. A lot. Almost fifty minutes from sitting down to dishes served. As somebody said, "If it were really good, it would be worth the wait. But it wasn't"

Not bad. From so cal. So I expected the enchiladas to be better than they were. Not much of a choice here in Gallup so the reviews may be generous from others.

Really, El Sombrero is not my first choice when dining out in Gallup. I'll go with Genaro's first, then Jerry's second and if their both closed then I'll meander down to Earl's. Now when those places are all closed, like they were on the Sunday I was in Gtown, I thought Avalon would fix me (Chinese food). Alas, they were closed too. Okay El Sombrero, do yo thang gurl. It was alright. As stated, if I had my choice, I'd hit the others first. The fare was decent New Mexican food. Standard choice of red or green with any entree, which is hella comforting because we don't get that in Phoenix. I think I had a tamale and taco. It was good. I liked that they gave me a choice of guacamole or a dinner salad for an app. Psshhh....guacamole, of course. If it's Sunday and all my regular joints are closed. I'll hit this place up.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
