I try to find great tamales whenever I can. Years ago I did a tamale factory tour of San Antonio, and that was an amazing treat, enjoying them off the pax seat of the rental car while getting out of the neighborhood before anything happened, but many of those places are now gone. If you order a tamale up here in Wisconsin, the trend is toward, dry, sparse, plain & flavorless. You kind of wonder why on earth you ordered a tamale - - it's like fancy striped yellow cardboard. But the pork tamale at Leona's across from the Santuario was luscious -- huge amount of pork, moist, succulent, spicy, unbeatable. Bought some of their red and green chile spice too, and now I spray it in lines across various soups, and that rules also.

Very rude owner. I asked him what type of chilies where in the salsa he sold and he answered sarcastically. Horrible customer service. His stuff is also over priced compared to the other vendors.

We had intended to eat lunch in Santa Fe, but a spontaneous stop in Chimayó found us outside the door of Leona's, wondering if we should give it a try. $2 tamales and homemade tortillas were a good selling point. But then this magical passerby saw we needed a little extra persuasion and told us that he eats at Leona's every year and that it is fabulous. We took his advice and were so so glad we did; it was a delicious meal for a very very reasonable price. Oh and don't forget to grab a homemade peanut cluster in the glass jar on the counter. They are amazing.

No longer a restaurant. And the website says there is a gift shop but we didn't see it.

We have been visiting Leona's for 25 years, especially for the tamales. Lately they seem kind of salty but nice and hefty, spicy, chili hot, substantial tamales. It is worth visiting Leona's just because it is old, Leona will probably take your order and you can eat down by the river under the big cottonwoods behind the church. Leona has here own brand of tortillas. Check out the pictures of Leona on the wall.

A little hidden gem of place with $2 tamales that will knock your socks off (esp with chiles). Have them shipped to you! The hot chocolate met my mom's high demands. So did the lent pudding, made with sprouted wheat flour. The place had a ski lodge meets New Mexico vibe.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque.
