The owners are friendly and accommodating. Rooms are charming, quaint, and clean. "Bacon", the owners dog, was super sweet and friendly while still respecting our space, quietly saying hello without ever entering the room. We were happy to find a last minute respite when if became such a hassle to find a room in Durango. We were glad we stopped early in Chama.

Where do I even start, our entire stay was a nightmare!!! It started with the booking of our rooms which we did weeks in advance, we called to confirm only to find out our reservations were not even listed. We should of looked somewhere else at this point but once the owner figured out if the room was going to be occupied, or was the storage location for the wife's Christmas decorations the room was eventually assigned to us. Upon arrival we received a room that was beyond outdated; sofas smelled like sweat, pillow covers were old jeans sown together and the heating system was so loud and poorly maintaned. In the second room that we booked the room again could of used some updating and also the only bathroom was located upstairs. The lodge does not allow pets which we were not aware of and we were traveling with our 4lb teacup Maltese, when the owners found our we did have a pet to our surprise they were beyond furious. I say surprise because they have a great Dane size dog roaming everywhere, including the breakfast area. Instead of approaching us about the situation, our family who arrived after were questioned in a rude manner about having a dog and they were notified by the wife that we wouldn't be staying our last night at the lodge because of the dog. We found out through our family since they were harassed upon arrival and were stumped about what had occurred and even more so to discover we had no knowledge about anything. The worst was when we were all hanging out in our families lodge after dinner and were having a great time! That was until around 9:30pm when the wife began banging on the door which we found our was a joint door to their living quarter. She was screaming telling our family to,"Cut it out," that was followed by comments that she had had enough of our family and other rude comments. She was yelling so bad that my 4 year old nice became scared and started crying. She then came around to the front door banging on it, telling is that this had been going in for sometime and she was tired I'd it. She also told us to get the hell out and to meet her in the front to recieve a refund for the night. Mind you my in-laws were in our room with a sleeping 14month old . We packed up and revieved our refund by her husband who did not say one word, yet instead his wife was in the room close by to the check in still yelling at us. In all our travels have we ever been treated like this, we understand that everyone operates differently, we can respect that but to be treated so poorly is without reason! I warn anyone from booking with this lodge, there is a great lodge down the road called Chama Trails Inn with professional owners as well and great rooms!

We needed a place to stay midway from point A to point B. The closest place turned out to be Chama. Tripadvisor gave Cumbres Suites a good review. There were a few hotels listed on yelp, but this was the only one with a review. Once again yelp didn't let me down. Keeping in mind that this is a small inn in Chama NM, and not a big city, we got a kick out of some of the quirks. When I first tried booking the room, I got an answering machine because the keeper (Terrie) was picking her son up from school. However, I got a call back a little later and we reserved a room. We said we would be rolling in a little late and she assured us that she'd leave the back porch light on for us and the room would be waiting. The room we stayed in was in the main house and was wonderful. It was as clean and spacious as you would expect from a B&B. Along with the comfy beds, it had a small kitchen/sink area and some other furniture to lounge around on. It was warm and cozy, felt like staying at a relative's house. The only downside was there was only a very limited continental breakfast. For us this wasn't a big deal as we were in a bit of a hurry to hit the road. But don't plan on a big breakfast here. We would definitely stay here again if we were passing through.

5 stars for what I imagine is available in Chama. Clean, the family who runs it is incredibly nice, and it had some charm. We had an enormous room with two queen beds, a table to sit at, and lots of space for children to run around. We were very pleased that we were able to find something with some character in a small town that was really a stop between two destinations. i would definitely go back.

Good location, price good for a tourist town, friendly owner operator. Room clean and comfortable, decor was a little dated needed to git rid of the teddy bear framed pictures and the country charm, bed linens were a bit worn and could use an update. Coffee was ready at 5:30AM and the breakfast was OK for the price and place.

July 2012 Location: set on highway 17, just a bit north of 84. Some rooms face the highway, but most are at the back. There are two buildings. Next door is some kind of business with trucks coming and going into the evening. We stayed on a Friday so don't know if there is truck noise on weekday mornings, no truck noise on saturday. One restaurant is next door. The inn is located about one mile south of downtown. The downtown, however, seems to be on its last leg. The railroad is there and a cafe that looked busy but most storefronts were empty, many were for sale, and the remainder seemed to be little local shops with railroad stuff. Most restaurants are located near the 84 and 17 intersection of town. Staff: we were greeted by the friendly woman manager or owner, efficiently showed our room and the breakfast room, given advice on restaurants (the best being the high country), and pretty much left alone. Atmosphere of the grounds and public areas: the hotel is a simple wood structure set back from the road with some public outside seating in back. The breakfast room is open, it seemed, all the time if you wanted to sit in there but when we arrived two little kids were playing basketball inside. Breakfast is like a blast from an unhealthy past. Large selection of packaged chocolate muffins, little Debbie treats, sausage biscuits to be microwaved, sugary cereals. A little kids dream of breakfast. There was also bagels and bread for toast, oj, milk, and bananas and watermelon. Reg coffee was available but no decaf and no hot water for tea though there was some Lipton tea bags set out. Room: we had a two room suite. One room had three queen beds, two were decent, one was old and less than comfortable. The beds had colorful quilts and incredibly hard and old pillows. There was a tv in the bedroom mounted on the wall but a serious hazard for anyone over 5' 8". Carpet was worn but seemed clean. The front room had a couch, table and chairs and full kitchen supplies stored in very old plywood cabinets. There was a mw and a coffee machine. The bathroom had a tiny shower and no excess sink room. There is no air conditioning in the downstairs rooms but the windows were open when we arrived and despite the 88 degree temps the room cooled off quickly as the sun set. Curtains in the bedroom did not darken the room. And there is no door between the rooms. The front room also had a tv with direct tv. This seemed like the best place in a town of very limited options.
