Good food. Green chile omelete, no complaints. Also, one evening while needing something more soothing, the club sandwich was a good call. Thick bacon, good veggies, all very satisfying. All in all, a solid diner. Oh, and good pumpkin pie ;)

This place was good for what it was. Walk in, order at the counter, large menu to choose from and you get a lot of food. Before coming here I read previous yelper's comments and so we did end up getting the texas toothpicks, I had never had em before and I'd have to say they were alright. I don't plan on visiting Carlsbad for any reason other than the caverns so next time we visit em, I think we might visit Happy's again too.

Good home cooking breakfast. Almost a hole in the wall but not quite. Worth the stop on the way to the caves!

Heard all the good things about this place, must have caught them on a bad day. First of all, stopped by on Monday afternoon only to find out they were closed until 6 A.M the next day. Okay, I could live with that. Got up early to head out to the Cavern s and wanted to get some breakfast. Stopped in again, this time they were open. Walked in and the place was quiet. Some customers, one looking for "silverware". An older gentleman who worked there saw me come in, never said a word to me. Walked over to the counter and all I heard was the cooks in the back bickering about what went with which order. Stood there a good five minutes and no one ever acknowledged my presence, I might as well have been invisible. Turned around and walked out, not one word from any of the employees. If, and that is a big if, I ever go back to Carlsbad, you can bet that Happy's will be on my "do not try" list.

I have never left Happys feeling sad! I know it sounds stupid but they make some good food here. Everything I have eatin from here taste homemade and is always prepared to order. The 3 egger breakfast special is awesome just like all the hamburgers. It may cost a dollar or 2 more a meal but it is definitely worth every penny. Thank You Happy's

Such a delicious and happy place to stop at. My friend ruin the restroom and clog the toilet years ago. They had to close down for a while afterwards and fix The plumbing but all is good now

Was looking for a Good burger & someone suggested this place & couldn't have been more Pleased... Their burger comes in 1/4 1/2 & 3/4 lb. Homemade Patty with All the Fixing,Thick Bacon with hatch green peppers . They also grill fresh jalapenos that are outstanding.. We Travel Alot &I've read other reviews that said they are overpriced, i Have to Disagree.. For Fresh Homecooked Food U Won't Find a More Reasonable Place

Passing through Carlsbad and saw Happys. Glad we stopped for breakfast. Everyone was so nice and breakfast was awesome. Best hash browns I've ever had.
(5)Susan H.
What a great burger. The fries are good and the okra-fried of course-is delightful. Just a good town burger joint.
(5)Jason F.
Awesome diner breakfast...served on a disposable plate with disposable utensils... Order at the counter...from a staff who doesn't need much reason to close up shop for the day...

This was a delicious place to stop for lunch. We were on our way back to Albuquerque from the caverns and wanted to fuel up before we really got on our way. It a kind of diner, with counter service and seat yourself, no waitress. I honestly couldn't decide what I wanted at first, because the menu had a good number of great sounding items. I decided on a grilled ham and cheese sandwich, as well as the pretzel and cheese bites. The sandwich was awesome. It was a big think ham steak slice on a very good grilled cheese sandwich. I added a photo because it was so good. The bites were so different than I though, but so darn good as well. I figured they would be pretzel bites with a cheese sauce, but no, they were small cheese bites like mozzarella sticks in bite form, but the breading was pretzel. It was simply awesome. Great place to stop in Carlsbad.

It's a nice little dive. My son had the chicken fried steak dinner and I had the catfish dinner. Both we very large portions and tasted great. If we are ever back in the area again, we will eat here again.

Price and taste gets 4 stars but "ambiance" gets a 1. You order your goid food at the counter and then you'll have to clean your own table when you sit. The parking lot is pretty rugged and rough on a tourist's tires. The locals will give you the non-local stare as soon as you walk in. I will say, the restrooms are very clean.
(3)Jennifer J.
Friendly service, but the food was a miss and the wait was very long.

This place is good sometimes and fair sometimes. I have eaten here several times over the last ten years and it's always a crap shoot if it's going to be good or fair. Good luck if you want to try it.

My friends & I stopped at Happy's after a visit to Carlsbad Caverns, and we loved it! The burgers were hand made and prepared on a griddle. Best I've had since I left Wisconsin. The sides are a different story, though. They were high mediocre. Not overcooked, but just lacking flavor. This was true of the fries, onion rings, fried okra, Texas Toothpicks, and tater tots. Stop here for burgers, and you be disappointed.
(4)Gina F.
Great burgers and fries! Couldn't finish the burger and the staff is very nice. We are more into the food than the ambiance so we didn't mind if it's old and kitchy....we want a good meal and that's what we got here.
(4)Rusty R.
Good home cooking. The locals know the secret to this restaurant, phone your order in. They only put out one order at a time so it does take a while to get your food. You order at the counter and they bring your food to the table. Drinks are self serve so you can have a few refills before your food is done. No frills but worth the wait.
(3)Liz H.
Came at 11:45 Waited over an hour with 2 young starving kids and ended up leaving with no food and our money back! Do not go here!

Was alright. Lots of cool stuff to look at.

I don't know if it's the giant burgers or all the hokey smiley faces and nick nacks, but I really dig this place. Its so carefree, and the burgers are great.
(5)Forthe W.
This is an amazing find. I got a 1/2 pound cheeseburger and it was cooked great. I really liked the fries...they are a unique rectangular shape that are battered. We also got friend pickles; I hadn't had any before and was pleasantly surprised by the taste. While you are waiting for your food, there are plenty of things to look at around the restaurant. They seem to collect hundreds of "Happy" toys with smiley faces. Overall a great place and a good value!
(5)Ray U.
Amazing burger, called the JUMBO! 3/4 pounder had great flavor! Biggest burger here in Carlsbad I've found so far and a good price. Will be eating here again!

WOW - Asked the nice lady at the RV Service Center where to get a good Mom and Pops type burger, and she said Happy's. Can't always trust the locals, but I will bookmark this one. Looking at the menu thinking 'a 3/4lb. Burger... Are they crazy???' As I waited to order, I thought 'well, for $6.75, I could save some for later'. As I'm ordering, I see a sign that says 'try our new Smoky Ghost pepper jack cheese' so I did. Again I say WOW. Didn't take a pic, didn't save any for later, fell in love with the Ghost Pepper cheese with a nice smoky touch, and didn't regret eating the whole thing - WITH the deep fried mushrooms :) . I may be sorry once my brain and stomach catch up with each other ... but I doubt it. Seriously one of THE BEST burgers I've ever had. And to add to the visit, the sweetheart at the counter was down home fun. I can't imagine getting within 20 miles of Happy's and not coming back to try breakfast (or another Jumbo with Smoky Ghost cheese).

A burger joint the way dad and grandpa enjoyed back in the day! I've enjoyed several cheeseburgers here and have always walked away extra full. Share the onion rings - it's a big order (although I managed to each all of them PLUS the burger). Other than the burger, I've had several of their pies. I don't think they're homemade, but still tastes great. Good coffee, too. Very casual environment. Place your order at the counter, get your beverage, have a seat, and listen for your name to be shouted out. Definitely worth a visit.

Happy's saving feature is that they are open for weekday breakfasts when most other places in town are closed. Food: hopelessly overcooked green chili omelet tasted like rubber and had almost no filling. Over easy eggs were also overcooked, but still slightly soft in the yolk. The spuds that they were so proud of turned out to be frozen oven fries with a sprinkling of frozen veggies. They were not cooked properly so that there were a few crunchy bits while most of it was soggy. Also tasted like they'd been cooked in the stale meat grease which did not improve them. Coffee was sort of fine. Service: disposable plates and "silverware" which is fine I guess. The staff were terrible. The whole time we were there we could hear the cook staff complaining, bitching and arguing over who was supposed to be working on what, and what went with which order. It was really unpleasant. And hearing them argue about whether my omelet was going to take longer than my husband eggs did not fill us with confidence. Maybe burgers are their specialty, but I wouldn't recommend this place at all.

There was nothing happy about the employees. Big time washed up grumps and rush you to order. The place itself LOOKS cheery, but it's completely silent inside. They need music. It's like the customers are afraid of the servers and don't talk. But they put up with it because the Burgers are actually really good. Prices are super cheap too. It's just a really odd atmosphere in there.

omg! the food preps touch your food as they put it on your plate...no gloves! requested that they pls not touch food w/out gloves...she put on gloves for about 10 minutes then took them off and began picking up food again with her fingers. reporting them to the health dept.

On our way across the country, we happened to stumble into this diner before heading out to the caverns. We were skeptical, as we are city folk. We were pleasantly surprised. Everything had a greasy spoon "flair". Lots of menu items, lots of things fried. We got an assortment of fried goods including fries, onion rings, and texas toothpicks. All of them were crispy, flavorful and delicious, as were the huge burgers. Seriously, one of my favorite burgers I've eaten. To enjoy this food at reasonable prices on accident on our way out of a small town in remote New Mexico was amazing. If I ever find myself out in BFE, NM again, I'm definitely going to Happy's.

I really wanted to like Happy's but the place wasn't so happy...

Like most people, my family and I stumbled upon this place on our way out to the caverns. Actually, I saw it was packed as we drove past (around lunch), so we hit it on the way out from the caverns (late lunch). The place screams classic dive and has the smells match! If you're some 20-something snobby "foodie" who wants chef-prepared dishes and a healthy dose of asskissery, look elsewhere. For the normal people who actually count, this place is a great spot for burgers and catfish! I was told they won "Best Burger in town" and not being from the area, I joked (like the ass I am) and said "Oh, you beat out the Sonic?" - we all actually chuckled at that and it's nice to find folks who are not uppity nor full of themselves. My wife ordered the catfish (which I do not like, it's like eating dirt); however Happy's had such a good cornmeal batter (thin, not too thick) and great fish, that I ended up eating half of her fish (thankfully, it was a generous portion - 3 or 4 big pieces/fillets). I got the big-ass burger, with chile and bacon, etc. aka a heart-stopper. What I found was, at the very end, after I ate most of the veggies and other stuff, when it was just burger, bun and a little cheese: WOW, that is a good burger! Next time, I'll order something less fancy and enjoy the best burger in Carlsbad, NM! Definitely make this place THE place to stop and eat while in Carlsbad. You will not regret it. Fun staff and owner, great public "regulars" - just a joy to see Americana in person (being from sterile/snobby/liberal California).

I really like Happy's!! The first time I ever went there, I was expecting a very limited burger-stand type of selection, and being a pescavegetarian was thinking I'd have to resign to eat only french fries, but I was very pleasantly surprised!! They have fried fish burgers, garden burgers, full breakfast foods, and of course hamburgers for carnivores. The menu is extensive, and fresh. I have yet to try everything. The atmosphere is friendly and open and unintentionally retro. It's not fancy, but not run down. It's casual and comfortable and always busy. I recommend the fried fish sandwich, fried okra *swoons*, sweet potato fries, onion rings to die for, regular fries,.... my friends always love the jumbo hamburgers. Hmmm....... with all this reminiscing about their good food, I think I'll have to go there for lunch today!!! YUMMMMMMM!!! ^_^

Great burgers, curly and sweet potato fries and onion rings. Reminds me of the good ol' days.

My favorite restaurant in carlsbad. they have everything. the breakfast is amazing and the texas toothpicks. the people who work there are the nicest ever. i love how they have toys everywhere. the food is wonderful. i can taste it now! last time i went there with my family we got 4 baskets of texas toothpicks. would recommend to everyone for any meal!

We rolled into Carlsbad with an hour to spare before a meeting, and starving from a long flight followed by a long drive. So happy that Happy's was across the street. Totally friendly staff, great quick burgers and an option on fried pretty much anything you want (okra, pickles, various forms of potatoes, etc.) Looking forward to biscuits and gravy one morning soon. Don't worry, go to Happy's.
(5)Amy H.
We went to Happy's because the reviews sounded pretty good and it was right across the street from our hotel. There's a reason the food is so cheap: it's terrible. I had biscuits and gravy that I'm pretty sure came out of a can. My husband had a burger that looked pretty good (and he said was tasty) and my kids got cute smiley fries with their meals, but I would never eat here again.
(2)Michelle K.
My sister said "I want to have sex with it and have it's burger babies". One of the best club sandwiches I've ever had. The bathrooms are clean too. Curly fries are delisious, although the basket is kind of small to share. Seriously go here.
(5)Wendy B.
Came here after a day at the caverns. We were starving, and this place seemed to be the only restaurant in Carlsbad that was open for a late lunch/early dinner. They actually had a pretty good veggie burger but it was a really thin patty and sparse with the toppings. It only came with a slice of tomato and a small piece of lettuce. Overall the place was pretty good but WAY overpriced. I paid over $6 for my veggie burger...and fries are not included - it was definitely not worth that. My husband liked the chili dog but again, overpriced. Also, there's a couple display cases of weird and creepy Disney figurines.
