Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

A family favorite for many years. We not only enjoy the food and service ourselves, we enjoy taking our visiting guests because we know they are very consistent.

I had the steak and enchilada special . It was amazing , the steak was cooked perfectly and the red chile was perfect . The avocado salad my grandparents ordered were very lack luster , it was literally just a small handful of shredded lettuce and a few slices of avocado and chips on the side . I guess it was enough for the oldies but I was very unimpressed . I ordered a margarita and let's just say it just tasted like a terrible cherry limeade with no trace of tequila , I will not order a margarita there again . But the steak and enchiladas are really amazing . So if you go get that combo and no margarita and you meal will stay perfect .

I was in town for business and took someone out to lunch. She recommended Pete's, and I am so glad I came. Turns out, the cook is the cousin of my business associate - she's been working there for decades. Doesn't write anything down, just cooks every day. Crazy! She came out to say hi and gave me a hug, even though she had no idea who I was. Staff was also really friendly - found out I wasn't from NM and brought out samples of different chilis and such for me to taste. I had eaten at multiple places in ABQ known for their NM cuisine. This was absolutely as good or better. The salsa was very flavorful without being too hot - you could really taste the cilantro, onion, and chilies. The chips were crisp, fresh, not greasy, and awesome. The spanish rice was clearly freshly made and probably the best I've ever had anywhere. The beans were seasoned nicely (FYI, they use LARD, you can tell by how rich they are). The red chili sauce on the carne adovada enchiladas was smoky, a little spicy, and some of the best I've had. The carne adovada has the same red chili sauce, but the pork could have been of higher quality. The drinks were refilled constantly and food came out very quickly. Restaurant is very clean and quite quaint - it used to be a home I think, judging by the layout. Prices were reasonable. You can buy their chili sauces, powder, pretty much anything to-go in pint-size containers. hell yes. How do I get this back to Dallas, now? I see several people have given this place bad reviews, and maybe they deserve it. I don't know, but my experience was exemplary and beyond delicious.

This Belen staple serves some of the best New Mexican food in the state. You won't be disappointed with any of the burritos in red, green, or Christmas chile. The enchiladas platter is huge! Soapapillas are delicious! Be sure to order extra!

In Belen for the first time and Pete's is a real treat. I thought the food was very good, I had the relleno's with rice and beans, all very good. I also had the chicken enchilladas and they were very good as well. The salsa with the chips was not spicy but that's ok for the milder taste buds. Instead just have the red chili and you'll love it. My server is Jaime and she is really on the ball, the staff is very attentive and always seem to be looking to help. Enjoyed the experience very much!

Terrible service. Employees that work there are very unfriendly! The food portions are small. They never have anything new on the menu.

Have again: the sopaipillas, plain with honey or with beans and beef were excellent. The chile adovado was also excellent. Both were items I've never had before. Really beautiful restaurant and we had excellent service. Not have again: the chile relleno tasted like they put Velveeta cheese inside. OK, but not worth having again.

Food was okay, if you aren't a Native New Mexican. We have lived here for "only" 50+ years, so I guess we are close to native status. We had eaten a number of times at Pete's in the past when we had business in Belen. We remembered the food as being quite good. It's changed. First the good: Chips were warm, fresh, tasty, with moderate salt and not greasy. The red chile on the enchiladas was good and "just right" spicy. The place is very nice inside and the bathrooms among the cleanest I have seen outside of very pricy places. Red chile enchiladas were okay. Sopapillas were fine. Downside: Salsa was canned tomatoes with little or no chile. Chile Rellenos had a good chile flavor, but were the blandest chiles I have ever eaten in NM. I questioned the waitress and she informed me that the restaurant never goes above "medium" in heat. Nice flavor, but they needed to kick it up a notch. Beans with dinner were extremely bland; probably the worst I have had. Spanish rice was a joke. Price was on the high side for the quality of food. Probably Pete's is set up for the Tourists who come to the Harvey Museum. I would drop it to One Star, except for the cleanliness.

Pete's is a must go to place when you visit Belen. Food is great. Also, make sure to ask them which chile is hotter for the day (red or green)..It usually depends on the day. On my first day of trying out Pete's, I thought red would be hotter but alas it was the green chile that was hotter. Second time, I went there I chose the right chile sauce. Red was hotter the second time I went. Ambiance is also great. If you get seated in the back corner where all the private rooms are, you get more privacy. Also, the sopapillas are amazing!

First off I ordered a bean sopapilla cuz I don't eat meat. There was pork in the green chili. I'm not from NM and had no idea there was pork. The waitress didn't offer to exchange my plate and said it is on the menu they have a veggie option. Yea thanks lady, my fault. Then she comes by later to take it and asks if she should. No shit! I can't eat that! I didn't eat it and was still charged. Never coming here again. With their soggy ass food.

Best Chile Relleno Ever!!! Crispy and light with ooey gooey cheese. I'm not sure I can eat anyone else's relleno again. Mmmm..... Pete's ....
(5)Robert G.
Certainly not the best Mexican food I've had but not the worst either. I will eat here again. Do pay attention to the other reviews about the red and green chili temp on different days...staff will warn you. Service is average, what I'd expect from a small town restaurant.

I will recommend this place, red Chile is the best, chips and salsa are fresh and crispy

The staff failed to tell us that asking for fries instead of rice on our kid plates was going to cost extra. Waitress added an extra enchilada to my husbands plate, and we were charged for that. When we got our bill and saw the over charges we asked the cashier ( who is part owner) and she was quite rude. Waitress failed to inform us of extra charges so we left her no tip. Educate your staff how to explain possible charges with substitutes and overcharges. Make sure you ask questions about pricing before you order!!!

Filled with family memories since I was little. Great, no better yet, AMAZING sopapillas. All of the food is amazing, as I've pretty much tried everything every time I come with my family. This is a special place we come to and take visiting friends and families. It all tastes good with chili or without and most things taste better with their green chili added. Even their generic chips and salsa they give to everyone is good. The atmosphere is very southwestern even to the meat and potato food they give. The staff has always, consistently, been very helpful, friendly, and welcoming. It truly is a great place to visit when in Belen as it gives authentic New Mexican food. I would recommend this for anyone stopping by Belen, New Mexico.

I know it seems a little over-board to give such a modest place 5 stars but let me explain... My family has bee going here for a few decades and I have to say, I get cravings for Pete's ALL THE TIME! The green chili is amazing, the sopapillas are to die for and I've never NEVER eaten anything on the menu that I could qualify as less than good...but most dishes are amazing. If you're traveling up I25 and going by Belen, it's very worth the detour off the highway.

Northern NM style. I had a carne adovado burrito, with both red and green chili. I had a bit of the carne adovado by itself, and it was very tasty, but not very spicy hot. The red chilli was nice and hot, but not much flavor except for a nice smokiness. The green however was very tasty with great chili flavor, while not being very hot. The green is also made with bits of potato. Not sure what that adds to the flavor, but the potato was really good. My wife had chicken enchiladas, the tortillas were dry rather than moist and fresh. She also had them smothered with green and red. Her opinion on the chili was similar to mine. We had sopapilla at the end of the meal. They were perfect, nice size, perfectly browned, and piping hot. They have a nice selection of beers, but no margaritas. The restaurant is in an old adobe home right across from the railroad. Been in business since 1949. It is a very nice looking place. Bottom line very good, but not great. There are better Northern NM restaurants in Santa Fe, Taos, and Albuquerque, but Pete's is probably the best in Belem.

When visiting Belen, I require a trip to this long-standing favorite. I remember eating here at the old location by the train station as a kid and will never forget those crispy tacos, and Pete's red chile. This New Mexican restaurant is a local institution.

I would have given this 5 stars but our last visit (a week ago was just so-so & the service was average at best). We eat here regularly when in Belen and enjoy the stuffed sopapillas (chicken, green chili), carne adovada, enchiladas and guacamole. Ususally the service is excellent and the food is consistantly great. A "go to" place when in the area!
(4)Mike P.
Since my last review, "Stella" the forgetful waitress is gone and the service overall has improved. They still aren't open on Sunday and they don't have a lunch menu.
(4)Amy B.
Oh, how I long for beef and bean stuffed sopapillas served "Christmas style" (smothered in BOTH delicious red and green chile). Heck, I would eat anything smothered in that stuff - you just cannot get it out here in CA.

Pete's is soooo good! I have to go there every time I visit family in Belen. Their relleno's are the best I've had anywhere, melt in your mouth. Service has always been good. I highly recommend Pete's for some real good New Mexican food. Yummy sopapillas!
