Back again, but this time a new cashier....damn, just as friendly as the first one. Then, after I order & sit down, someone else walks by and notices I don't have a drink, so he asked if he could get me a water or anything else....wow, service is clearly emphasized here. Fast forward to the end of the meal, the original cashier was right on top of my empty basket and politely asked if there was anything he could get me. Now lets get to what you came for: the nitty gritty is that the sandwich is just ridiculous(ly good) but this time I tried the waffle fries, as approx 40% of yelpers mentioned that they are bomb. They're not. they're basically nuclear (or nuke-U-ler, if you want to pronounce it like a former president ;). serious, I used to think that chik fil a's waffle fries were the best anywhere- I'm pretty sure these not only give them a run for their money, but actually blow them out of the water, holy cow! not a spot of grease anywhere, perfectly crispy, BIG!!!!, and just flavorful as all heck! Sadly my waistline is not going to like me if i keep coming here, but those criss cut fries are simply like the blue crystal to me~ One other item of note: I realized after the 2nd bite that my sandwich had a bit of kick.....and then i remembered ordering green chile. Opened up the sanny and there it was: REAL green chile, big honking 3/8" diced chile, and it had some oomph! Apparently they refuse to use that sissy canned stuff around here. Bravo for doing it right, 505 style! Last note: free wifi! brought my laptop and finished an hr's worth of homework over the best sandwich in Abq. Talk about catering to the students. Thankfully for us regulars, it isn't overrun by students :)

I've lived in Albuquerque for a little over five years. I always noticed Yeller Sub, singing The Beatles song in my head as I drove by, thinking nothing of it. I finally decided to give this place a go one day, and an so happy I did! To begin with, the cashier asked me if I had been there before, to which I responded. He then proceeded to explain the menu to me and asked if I had any questions. I ordered a turkey sub with the bread hallowed out (to save on some carbs since I was splurging on fries!). He made sure the cook understood this special request. I was then torn between ordering the waffle fries and chips. I asked him for his recommendation to which he quickly responded, "try the fries!" My order was out relatively quickly - less than 10 minutes and well worth the wait. The sandwich was nice and soft, with potent onions, yum! The fries were hot, fresh and super crispy. I will definitely be returning here soon! Be sure to check out all of their old school decor and memorabilia! This little place has so much character!

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the ingredients. The staff was very friendly and checked on my at least 5 times during my hour lunch visit, I don't get that at a many of the waiter served restaurants I go to yet alone a sub shop. If you are in the area, make sure you stop in.

You ever leave a place and you just don't know if what you are was good. Or maybe you were just very hungry. Well I had really high expectations because you yelpers REALLY build up a place. Well I had the steak torpedo....I wish there was more vinaigrette on it. Which must mean it wasn't that good if I really wanted more vinaigrette. Well semi lie the steak was tasty but covered in too much cheese. I did like how they bake their bread mmm homemade. I will be back so that means for now I will keep this interview short and well semi sweet.

The Yeller Sub is near my work and I decided to drop by for lunch today. The moment I walked in I was greeted by a friendly gentleman working the front counter. He was efficient and kind. He also did an excellent job at offering add ons such as fries and a drink. I appreciated that. This place is adorable and has ample seating. They also serve ice cream. The crisscut fries were cooked perfectly and my torpedo was very yummy. Give it a try and you will not be disappointed.

This place was bomb ! Super friendly staff, huge fresh sandwiches, good service and reasonable prices. Soft fresh bread. I got turkey avocado and it was bomb. I might come back tomorrow lol

Steak & egg sub is a tasty protein bomb. It's basic but satisfying and tasty. Haven't tried anything else I like it too much.

I support anyone's decision to try this place. The staff is so friendly and helpful, and the food is good. I'm impressed with how much effort they put into each customer. I had their veggie sub with avocado and a side of their homemade chips! The atmosphere is pretty cool too!

Taking a look at the walls in Yeller Sub tells you a lot about the place. They are adorned with accolades, newspaper articles, letters from thankful charities, and various other written kudos going back all the way to the store's opening in the early 90's. This all seems pretty encouraging, that is, until you realize that for some reason the paper trail dwindles to an end around 2001. After that, there is nothing. What happened? My theory is that this place used to be pretty damn good, (especially in a city like Albuquerque where good or local sub shops are hard to find) but slowly lost its mojo over the years. Nowadays, it offers below average subs for above average prices. Yeller Sub's first fault is noticeable almost immediately: they are strangely inflexible about customizing your sandwich. Sure, you can get whatever you want but you'll pay through the nose for it. Getting cheese on a sandwich they doesn't come with it (which is the overwhelming majority of sandwiches) costs extra, I can understand that. But charging 70 cents extra to get pickles or olives or fucking iceberg lettuce!? That's ridiculous. The sub itself was disappointing. For one thing, the bread was really stale and chewy. I thought maybe it was because I ordered a hot sub, but my wife's cold one suffered from the same flaw. The meat was pretty sparse and tasted a little off. Most of the rest of the sandwich was flavorless iceberg lettuce which, like styrofoam peanuts, is really only there to fill out the container. And, for a 12 inch, it was pretty small and unsatisfying. They've got ice-cream and french fries, with is an interesting concept. The frozen treats looked a little freezer burned, but they had plenty of good-looking flavors. And the waffle fries were a bit small but fairly tasty and certainly a much better option than the bag of overpriced chips most places offer. Props for that. Still, I won't be back. Even with the tragic recent closings of Lenny's and Port of Subs, I'd rather do without subs than waste my money at Yeller. Or suck it up and go to Subway.

Always a great place for a sub. Fun and easy place to grab a quick bite. Any kind of sub you can dream up they can make. The foods always fresh and great tasting. The staff is friendly and super concerned with your dining experience.

This place is the anti-Subway. Quality subs and sides made and served by nice and efficient folks without visible neck tattoos. Lots of options for customization of your sandwich. I love the Pastrami Torpedo with green chile and avocado. The homemade chips (and fries) are really good. Make sure you commit someone else to split them with you, or you'll end up eating them all. I'm told the shakes are delicious as well. Food seems to come out pretty quickly when you consider the quality.

I rolled into town, just for the night, and as always fired up the Yelp machine to see where to get my grub on. And as I was scrolling through the food fare, the Yeller Sub popped up. Things that caught my eye: Homemade fries, homemade potato chips, ice cream, awesome subs/submarines, great customer service So I read some other poor reviews and kept those in mind.....until I walked into the place and threw those opinions out. Is it an older building? Sure, as I like to call them, rustic. Is the customer service awesome? Flawless. The teenager working the counter and took my order was super nice and professional. How about the people making the food? Kickass as well and super nice. How was the food: Awesome! I got the steak submarine with the homemade potato chips and it was delicious. Advice: Ignore the critics, those are the people who complain about EVERYTHING.

I actually came here because I wanted a malt, and the sandwiches sounded tasty. Boy are they tasty. The sub rolls are made in house and it shows, they are chewy, fresh tasting, not stale and crusty at all (*cough*SUBWAY*cough*) and the person working there was so nice to us! He greeted us as soon as we walked in and explained the menu. I got the "on deck" torpedo which is turkey and ham, with provolone cheese, all the garnishes, and I added green chiles because I'm obsessed with them and I need to eat them on everything....whoo they were spicy but it was delicious! I also got a malt made with double fudge brownie ice cream and it was the answer to my malt prayers. If I lived here I know I'd frequent that place! My BF loved it too--he got a steak torpedo and a kona coffee malt (which may sound weird but was actually quite good). Oh and the fries were really good too but after the sandwich and malt I only could eat a few of them.

wow, this is the best sandwich place ive ever been to in ABQ. My favorite now for sure. Freshly made bread, awesome food, friendly staff. What more can I ask for? Oh you must try their homemade potatoes chips, these are the stuff, put all other "home made potatoes chips" to shame.

Awesome little sub shop. Locally owned and a real community fixture. Walking in here you get a real sense of how proud they are of their operation. The walls are littered with Beatles memorabilia, as well as numerous commendations and awards from the city and other organizations. As for the food, you really can't go wrong here. They have two versions of sandwiches: Torpedos and Subs. Put simply: the Torpedos all have the same garnish, and are more or less what you see is what you get. The Subs have something in place of the garnish, and are more complex. Both versions come in 6" and 12" sizes. I always go Sub, for what it's worth. Friendly service, fresh food, local business. Doesn't get much better.

The only bad thing I can say about this place is there's not one where I live. Honestly, quite possibly one of, if not THE best sandwich I've ever tasted. Just made perfectly, with great toppings and garnish, the sauce was good, the bread fresh, etc. My family and I tried this while passing through last week, and we all said the same thing. The Yeller Sub rocks. I had the "On Deck" sandwich, which was awesome. Try the fries, too, you won't be disappointed. Heck, they even have great cookies. Oh and the staff is top notch. One worker had just started working there but was already a pro at customer service. The owner was a great guy and personally thanked us for coming in. If you're ever in the area, forget Subway or Quiznos and go to the Yeller Sub. You won't be disappointed. Now excuse me while I plan my next trip :)

  • Cee T.

I give 3 stars. average. The ingredients seemed fresh and had flavor but the sub roll was very tough and rubbery and they put so much Italian dressing on it really overpowered all the other flavors. I can't see rating a place 5 stars because they are sooo much better than Subway. Subway is awful. You can't compare a local shop with beat down mass chain food. They have what seems to be quality ingredients - it's what they do with those ingredients that determines the rating.

Have you ever sat down with a close friend and looked back trying to pinpoint the year that the two of you hit it off? I'm going to claim I ran across Yeller Sub around the mid 80's so I've motored through a few sandwiches since then. You know, its been a good run! In fact the evolved Yeller Sub is the best its ever been. They have high standards of service, cleanliness, and sure do put together a nice Sub. It feels good to be looked after. Employees understand that here. My suggestion is that you head over and find a sandwich you like. Maybe some house made potato chips made to order as well. Yeller Sub has proven it's reliability to me like a longtime friend. That's why I'm very comfortable referring them to you! Now go

No sure why it's taken me this long to review this place. I started eating here at the Juan Tabo and Lomas location back in 90's. I went to Manzano high school so it was the lunch spot if you valued food quality and no food chains; Which is the way I have been since then. Bread hasn't changed and the quality of meat, veggies and sauces are great! I go old school and get the crinkled fries or now the natural potato chips with a side of cheese sauce. Get a side of green chile and add it to the cheese in a separate cup! Makes the fries even better! This is an Albuquerque must eat if you visit ABQ or live here. Add a malt shake and you will be in heaven!

I avoided going to Yeller Sub for a while, and I wish I hadn't. I am now a regular. The freshly made bread is incredible, and the homemade chips are to die for! I have been getting the meatball sub, and it's huge - packed full of meatballs the size of my fist (I can never finish it), and the sauce has incredible flavor. I've tried the turkey as well, but I still need to try some others. Staff is always extremely friendly, and the food comes out quickly. Do not come here for the ambiance. This is an older establishment, with fast-food decor, so it's not a fine dining experience. Come for the food and great staff, that's what I would recommend this place as - great food, with great people making it.

I wouldn't call it the greatest sandwich of my life BUT it's a great sandwich. Unlike the giant chain that is Subway or Quiznos third place is a locally owned joint that prides itself on great customer service. Service with a smile must be the words they hear everyday because they always seem like the happiest people in Albuquerque.

So many of the disappointments that await us in life seem to result from having high expectations. We would all be happier people if we just went about our lives expecting nothing. Or very little. Which is what I expected when the little one dragged me into Yeller Sub. I fucking hate Subway and goddammit who goes out to eat a sandwich anyway, make that shit at home just the way you like it for like 2 bucks. But in we went, and my senses were immediately assaulted in the good way by the smell of freshly baked bread, the profusion of Beatles memorabilia strewn everywhere, and the incredibly friendly faces of everyone who works there. Upon learning it was our first visit to Yeller Sub, the counter employee explained the sandwich system to us in a most enthusiastic manner, and bigged-up the available side of house-made potato chips. They also offer fries and onion rings, and all kinds of ice cream treats and fountain drinks. Little one had a cold turkey sub with pickles and a side of O rings, and I had the vegetarian sub with added sautéed mushrooms served hot. The sandwiches were delicious! The bread was soft and chewy, and my sandwich featured melted cheese and plenty of shrooms, with freshly shredded iceberg, tomatoes, and vinaigrette. So simple, but it tasted really good! The nine-year old takes simple to the next level, but she loved her sandwich with its abundance of diced pickles. The rings were standard, but hot and good. She ate them all. Another reviewer mentioned that the place felt cluttered, but I personally loved all the Beatles memorabilia. Plus, the place is unique, you can see that it's owned by real people! God, what a treat that is. And the employees were so, SO friendly and helpful, not in the creepy way. Out of one hundred restaurants you walk into, you will be lucky to find one place with employees this genuinely nice! Overall, it was a surreal experience for me. I felt humbled by it. The food is not gourmet by any stretch, but it tasted great and it just felt really good to be there. I highly recommend The Yeller Sub if you love sandwiches, but just in general if you want to remember (or experience for the first time?) what it's like to spend your money at a place that truly values your business.

The sandwiches here are interesting - yummy for sure but they have interesting options. If you get your sandwich with the usual garnish, it's a torpedo, without it's a sub. But a sub comes with something instead of the usual, like grilled onions. Prices are pretty good, and the staff is fun. There is a totally insane manager there who is just a hoot! He is extremely customer service oriented and you can see that he makes a point of instilling that into the staff. The first time we went there, he spent like 10 minutes going over everything about the place with us. Extremely nice guy, and made us feel really good about coming back. The food is pretty yummy, and I like that I can mix and match weird stuff on there. (Hi, my name is Kendall and I like weird sandwiches...) The one thing I have consistently noticed is that when I do make requests to change the usual sandwich, something invariably gets left out. I have learned to check before we leave with our sandwiches, or I will have paid a buck for avocado for nothing. Other than that - good food, good prices, great staff - great place!

Looks like I'm the party pooper here but this place is just -meh. I needed a quick lunch one day so I stopped in here and got a six inch philly. It was alright but nothing exceptional. What kinda bugged me was the way the place looks so dirty and disorganized when you walk in. It's so cluttered. I didn't know where to look for the menu. Then the girl at the register was like "have you ever been here before?" and told me some weird rules about the different types of sandwiches. I felt like there wasn't the option to make a custom sandwich but just order from the list. I wasn't impressed enough to go back. I like to support local businesses but this place has no charm and the food wasn't that great.

  • Emily W.

the food is good, but I keep coming back because of the staff. they're incredibly nice, and they actually remember you. I like places where you feel welcome, with a staff that truly is there to make sure you have the best experience possible. I'm quickly becoming a lunch time regular, and I tell everyone I know to eat here.

Yeller Sub has been around a long time and the subs are top notch. Huge selection of meat/veggie/cheese combos you can go with. This is more or less like any good, old school (non-Subway) sub shop you've ever been to in any city. I take two stars off because the place is filthy. On side of the place has seating, but there were plastic tarps over the tables, like they were about to paint, or replace the floors, but they weren't and it just looked odd. The side where I at was also not too cleanly and there was someone mopping with a stinky mop right next to my table. Uh, not good.

In the town where I was born... Lived a man who sailed to sea... And he told us of his life... In the land of submarines... So I might have been initially partial to this place because I'm 85% convinced that a little bit of John Lennon was reincarnated when I was born. That said, they don't even have to sway me with the Beatles memorabilia to to get my vote for a great place to eat. Absolutely, positively, hands down, the best customer service I have EVER received in Albuquerque. When I walked in I was slightly overwhelmed by the menu -- so many choices. I've been in this position before at other places and I'm usually greeted with hostile impatience by the person behind the counter. Not at Yeller Sub, the clerk took his time and walked me through the menu, explained how everything was made, chatted it up with my baby, and lead me to a delicious cheesy steaky masterpiece. He also suggested we order the waffle fries with cheese sauce, which was a total winner. When we sat down, another staff member came up right behind me with a high chair for the kiddo. Throughout our meal various staff members kept checking on us, asking if they could refill our drinks and even brought my baby some slices of turkey when he refused to share my lunch with me. This is the kind of service you would rarely get at a sit down restaurant and It was astonishing that they were so good to us at a sandwich shop.

Tried this place for the first time today. The staff was amazingly helpful and genuinely interested in making our experience the best. The subs are huge and amazingly good. They are willing and able to customize, but it's really best to ask what they think - they are right! I had the chicken fajita sub with grilled onions and green chilis. Wow! The bread was made fresh there, the chilis gave it just the right amount of heat, and the whole thing was amazing. The whole thing was at the suggestion of the staff, and boy did they hit a home run! I also had an order of their potato salad. The portion was a little on the small side, but it was delicious. They also do the full suite of fries, onion rings, and shakes. And all of it was very reasonably priced (2 sandwiches with custom toppings, drinks and potato salad was about $10). This place has an odd name, but I can guarantee that I'll be back to this place often!

I love Yeller Sub. I've done other sandwich shops around town, but I always come back here. It's the people, its the feel, it's just what it is. The staff is so friendly. I've chatted with a few on visits and some have been with the company for years so I know they treat their employees well. The quality of meats they use is top notch. Never gotten roast beef or steak that is too fatty. I love pickles on my sandwich, they are crisp, diced whole pickles not limp pickle chips from a jar. Added plus for me. Hot sandwiches are always served hot, and cold sandwiches cold. No luke warm here. I love the fresh made chips (actual chips, not fries) when they are hot they are fantastic. Even on take out and they cool on the ride home, always crisp and not too greasy. They do have fries as well if that is more your thing. If you're unsure of what to get, ask the staff, they won't steer you wrong. Everything is made to order but they are still quick. The place has always been clean. Bathrooms are clean as well.

Came in a few weeks ago to try out their Philly cheesesteak. The meat was perfectly cut and chopped, and I really couldn't find fault with the cheesesteak itself. HOWEVER, it didnt have too much flavor.n Am I saying I wouldn't eat it again? No. I would. However, I wouldn't go out of my way to get this cheesesteak to satisfy a craving. Id like to come back to try the other sandwiches- does look good.

The submarine sandwiches here are the best that I have had in Albuquerque, and among the best that I've had anywhere. Many of them lean towards the Philly style, although there are plenty to choose from. The bread is excellent, but the seasoning on the meat and veggies makes the difference. My favorites are the Poseidon and the chicken subs. Besides the sandwiches, they have their homemade potato chips that many people like (I'm not a real potato chip guy). Personally, I go for an ice cream shake if I haven't filled myself with the sandwich. Aside from the food, I have to mention the staff. They are wonderfully friendly and attentive. Sometimes I think they are constantly watching us, waiting for our drink to be half empty so that they can refill it, or to wipe up the food that dripped on the table. This is a sandwich joint, for crying out loud. I don't think that any "sandwich shop" could get five stars without great service like Yeller Sub. This is definitely a family place. My kids love it, and it is a favorite stop after sporting events.

I can't believe I grew up here and had never previously eaten at Yeller Sub, that I recall, anyway. What a great place. I had a six-inch roast beef sandwich and my husband, daughter, and I shared a waffle fry. The kids were happy with their meals as were my husband and I. I don't have much to say except this is a superior alternative to some place like Subway or Jimmy John's (blech), especially in that it's local. It's not a gourmet sandwich shop, so don't expect that, but what it has it does right. Lastly, one of the servers (I'm sorry I didn't get his name) was fantastic-a sweetheart of a man. I'd go back just to visit with him.

This is the BEST place for a submarine sandwich. Don't know what that is?? It is what Subway TRIES to make!! Before sandwich shops like Subway and Quizno's showed up with their overpriced, franchise ingredient sandwiches, and their sauces loaded with MSG, preservatives and other toxins, there stood the local deli, and the Yeller Sub. It took me 30 years to get to this place, but I ALWAYS wanted to stop, just never did And OMG they have the best subs, just like I remember eating back before all the fake cheese and k.r.a.p. that places serve today. First, their bread is fresh made on the premises. Their sandwiches come loaded with meat - not some slimy garbage out of a package, but fresh sliced. The bacon, for instance is thick cut, not that thin see through trash at Quizno's and Subway. Their lettuce is shredded. Real deli cheeses, not that artificial junk. I just had a BLT, and it was the best BLT I had ever had! Maybe I'm old and I prefer the way subs were made 20 years ago, but just oil and vinegar, or Italian dressing,... that's all you need to make a tasty sub, just like the delis on the East Coast. No franchise here. Just the best subs EVER!!! One of the other reviewers has stated that Yeller Sub charges for the addition of lettuce. Then this same reviewer has photos of sandwiches seemingly overflowing with lettuce. First, all the sandwiches come with lettuce. If he ordered extra lettuce, then it is his own fault that there is so much lettuce on the sandwiches that he ordered. I don't understand what he is complaining about - just doesn't make any sense. He also says that the bread seemed stale because it was "chewy". Yes, I would describe the bread as chewy - as in "fresh". Stale bread, on the other hand isn't "chewy", it is hard, crunchy and crumbly. I didn't find the bread to be stale, as I stated, their bread is made fresh in house daily! The Yeller Sub also makes their own chips. They also serve breakfast sandwiches as well as ice cream, shakes and malts. And catering service. If you like Subway sandwiches, you'll LOVE the Yeller Sub!!!

This place always slips my mind around lunch time, but their Philly is heart stopping. Everyone here is always in a great mood and the sandwiches are what you would expect at a philly station on the East coast. AND WHATS THAT!?! They serve Ice Cream too!? OMG GO HERE.

My highschool gal pal Laurie and I found ourselves seriously needing to eat while we were at some sandwich shop whose name I have already forgotten. As we stood there I was thinking, "This menu isn't speaking to me". You know that feeling when you are hungry but the menu isn't calling you? Yeah, that's what I was going through....well that and a bit of a hangover from a 4th of July party that slid right into July 5th. I turned to Laurie and asked, "So why aren't we at the Yeller Sub?" and out the door we left. I have been eating at the Yeller Sub probably since the owner Mark opened it's doors in 1979 when I was a freshman at Manzano Highschool and the Yeller Sub was just down the street on Lomas Blvd @ Juan Tabo. I remember hanging out during lunch, after school with friends, playing pacman and listening to 80's music on the juke box. I remember ordering a 6 foot sub for my 16th birthday party(Oct 1981) wrapped in foil with a yellow/yeller? periscope in the center and a propeller at the end which at the time I thought was pretty cool. I think it's safe to say I was a fan of the Yeller Sub. Fast forward to July 5, 2010 and I found myself at its new location on Montgomery. My favorite sandwich the Torpedo was still on the menu; ground beef, green chile, provolone cheese, lettuce and tomato. The juke box isn't around anymore but the 80's music was and for a few minutes I was transformed back to the 80's; younger, naive, more hair and a smaller waistline. I have to say, the Yeller Sub blows Subway or Quiznos right out of the water. The food is fresh, the bread is cooked on site, the prices are comporable and I have to admit I enjoyed the nostalgia of seeing a small business still around 31 years later, good job Mark! The next time I'm in ABQ I'll be paying the Yeller Sub a visit. Oh yeah, thanks to the staff for taking me back to the 80's even it was just for a little while.

Still delicious, but that doesn't surprise me as they have been in business for a long time so they are doing something right!
