First, the location. This restaurant is cleverly hidden away from San Mateo Boulevard, directly North of the Mitsubishi dealership. It's right across the street from the New Golden Corral triumphant offering to diabetes everything that's wrong with america in a box fat camp. This offset, off-the-beaten-path environment makes for low overhead, less noise, and great patron traffic management. Those not 'in the know' are sure to pass by the restaurant not noticing it. Consistent with my 'cut the crap' mentality with food, the restaurant offers a variety of fun, tasty and fresh rolls without the grandeur or display of nearby rivals. I really do enjoy this restaurant as a very welcome retreat from the horrid sea of loud, obnoxious 'family friendly' restaurants in Albuquerque. The mood, the decor, and the opportunity to enjoy my friends company without shouting is something I really look forward to, and the Sushi gen offers a relatively upscale dining experience at a fair price point. I can hear myself think, I can relax, have a saucy conversation with my close friends, and leave with the satisfaction I supported a local small business owner who appreciates me for my business. Stop in and the ownership will make it a point to learn your name. Just ask for Mr. Xu. ('Phonetic: 'Shoe')

This is my new favorite place. I love their $20 all you can eat special. The portions are larger than you think! They only really have one person who works the floor, but I think it's because it doesn't really get all that busy. I've been here two times in the last week and I am hoping to make it a weekly meal with my friends.

Value for the money is ok, but I agree with one of the reviews I read before going in... waaaay too much rice on the Sushi rolls. Pretty sure the strategy is to fill you up with rice because they offer All You Can Eat. The staff was very friendly, but the food was average. I had a Tempura Spicy Tuna roll that was pretty greasy, which I don't normally expect with Tempura. I also had Salmon Sushi (Sake) and the meat was again, average. I've definitely had better. Much better.

Lunch special is amazing. Definitely some serious bang for your buck. The portions are larger than you think

Just got done eating here for the 1st time. The service was not that great. Actually we had to keep getting the attention of the staff, they don't cone to your table often. However, once you ask for something, they bring it out right away. I thought the sushi was good but shogun, sakura and ahh sushi is better. The real draw to this place is the all you can eat is $20 per person. You don't get the full menu with that but you do get a fairly good selection with a choice of 3 specialty rolls depending on the day. You have to eat it all though because you get charged full price for any leftovers. Overall the pros outweigh the cons. You get fairly good sushi for a very good price (even regular menu prices are some of the cheapest I've seen i.e. $5-$8). The service wasn't great but I've had worse. Bottom line is I would eat here again although for more money you can find a better experience. If you're looking for value, this is your place.

The sushi was decent. No complaints. Definitely not mind blowing and not the best sushi I've ever had. That said, the all you can eat special is tough to beat. We left very pleased. I will definitely be back for the all you can eat deal.

Terrible sushi. They make the same mistake that a number of other AYCE places do -- rice is much too thick and almost plastic in texture. Save your money and skip this place! Awarding one star because Yelp won't let me leave it blank for 0 stars.

This is my favorite value in town. The quality is good and worth more than the low all you can eat price. I listened to every bone head in town that sent me to Azuma and I hate to burst your albuquerque bubble but THAT is mediocre sushi, the rice isn't flavored and it's over priced. This is much more authentic and with an excellent price. I've never had a complaint at this place.

The crunchy roll was amazingly fresh! Very tasty. We also had the avacado roll was also very good. Service was interesting because our waitress was not very talkative but perhaps she didn't speak english. Will go again.

We ordered these things: Shrimp tempura - good enough Vegetable tempura - potatoes and onions??? Seaweed salad - oily and overly fishy Vegetable roll - flavorless, bland, boring, terrible But our beer and soda were good.. Total price $32 Please don't come here, it is nothing compared to MANY other sushi and Japanese restaurants in abq.

My husband and I went to Sushi Gen for a late weekend lunch and ordered three rolls... which was a big mistake because they were huge! This was a pleasant surprise, since many of the sushi restaurants I have sampled in Albuquerque prepared rolls that were relatively small. I was also impressed by the freshness of the fish we were eating, very surprising for a place that some would call "a hole in the wall." There are two reasons why I didn't give Sushi Gen five stars: 1) The menu lacked a variety of specialty rolls. For those who just like to let fish the speak for itself this would be no issue; however, I prefer creativity in my sushi rolls. 2) The waitress was attentive (i.e. our glasses were always full) but she was short with us which I didn't care for. If you are looking for well priced and fresh sushi, this is a good place to go.

Absolutely the worst sushi I ever had! I can't imagine someone could possibly mess rolls up to this extent. The crunchy parts r soggy, rice r way too much and dry, there is barely any tastable fish in the roll. Sushi s fish r extremely dry and let me doubt how old the fish has left in the kitchen before being used. One positive thing is the waiter, who is extremely helpful. However, regardless how good service is, bad food is bad food.

this was definitely the worst sushi I have ever eaten in my life, In fact it was more like catfish with a bunch of oversized rice balls. The rice was not seasoned properly and worst of all it was too wet giving it a mush like consistency that made it difficult to swallow. I would avoid this fake sushi place like the plague! Save your $20 for something else.

Make sure everyone in your party is there at the same time or they will ask you to leave. Our party was late due to an accident and the person that was able to make it was asked to leave because we couldn't be there five minutes after them. By the time we made it (15 minutes) there was no room to accommodate our party.

This is the worst sushi restaurant I've ever tried, and I've been to quite a few across the country. The atmosphere was dismal, the service unfriendly and unresponsive, and the table unclean. The miso was bland. The sushi was ungainly, fairly flavorless and served in a basic and uncreative manner. I was given a paltry amount of condiments and the waitress studiously ignored me when I tried to get her attention to ask for more. Tea was served in a cup with a cheap tea bag. Grocery store sushi would have been an improvement and much closer to home. What a waste and disappointment!

I would eat here everyday if I could. Their tempura anything is wonderful. Just got back from an anniversary dinner- the best all you can eat I've ever had.

Such a fun little place! Great prices and even better coupons in the Alibi. 30-40% off sushi...hello! We ordered 4 rolls; the dragon, rainbow, new mexico and philly roll. All of them were super tasty and at a good price. One time we ordered 7 rolls and 5 beers and it was $60. Pretty impressive to me since I eat sushi quite often. Look out for the coupons. Must try spot.

Best all you can eat sushi in town! The people here seem like a japanese family business, which means it's genuine sushi! I came late at 10:00, which is the time they close but the owner still welcomed me although the chef put away all of his stuff. They are very kind. The sushi is the best in town! The ratio between rice and fish is very nice! A very thick cut for every nigiri you order. Fishes are fresh just as if they just fish em! The eel was excellent too! And you have to try the white tuna! They were all so juicyyyyy that I couldnt stop eating. The rolls come with variety of choices, too, but I am not really a fan of rolls though (and they make bigass rolls:p) The only thing missing off their menu is the Ikura (salmon egg.) I came back right to this place the day after which is today, filled my belly with them sushi till I can't walk anymore but it was still so awesome. I am writing this review with droolz. Why the heck do they only have 3.5 stars?? The servers and owner are extremely nice as well as the food. Notice: they only make Nigiris and Rolls. For $21 with the amount of sushi I ate, I think the price was very good! Will definitely be back! This review comes from an asian who has gone to countless sushi restaurants.

Good sushi and not bad price for all you can eat. Went towards the end of the night on a weekday so it wasn't really busy. Service was fast.

have been here for 4 years in a row for my bday the staff and the cooks know us by the calendar date and they joke when we walk in "on no, we going bloke today" hahah :) nice staff, they are short with your at first but that's how some Asian people are with strangers they are shy, once we get them talking oh man we got all of them going , will def go back and make this a bday tradition me and my party of 20 plus guests so they always accommodate us :) great food cant beat the $20 all you can eat.
(5)Jordana G.
The first time we ate here I thought is was OK, but the second time was very disappointing. They did not bring the ordered sushi and substituted a nasty roll that was difficult to eat. Service was not friendly, not rude really, just not "Hey I'm so glad you're here! What can I get for you?" I think we'll skip eating here again.
(2)Kendall B.
I go to eat here monthly for the all you can eat sushi (I think the all you can eat rolls have more rice ha ha). Love the Scooping Roll. Good place to eat for the cost. Staff very friendly.

I'm a sushi enthusiast and this is my first visit to Sushi Gen. Being an Asian and having tried different sushi restaurants all I can say is that this restaurant doesn't fit my taste. Maybe for white western customers. The sushi roll pieces which were made, were too big full of rice wrapped in dry seaweed and hardly other ingredients. There is no doubt that the owner is trying to profit with just rice balls. The sushi rice itself is too dry and over sticky. The seaweed used were hard in texture and hard to be broken when chewed. Plus they even charge for tea. As for desert I had requested for tempura green tea ice cream which was HORRIBLE. There is no doubt they don't know how to make one. What I got was ice cream wrapped inside a fried dinner roll instead of tempura. This will be my first and last visit. Overpriced gross sushi for profit....

Best sushi joint in Burque, with great all you can eat made from good fresh fish served elegantly by sushi artists.
(4)Tony S.
Definitely is locals place, especially give the location. But, it was certainly NOT upscale dining as the previous yelper claimed. Here's the low down... Service - 5 stars (very friendly and helpful) Food - 4 stars (all the fish was very fresh and tasty. But, they were a bit heavy-handed on the rice, which was a bit too dry.) Value - 4 stars (all-you-can-eat at $21 worked out, but just barely beyond ordering by the piece.) Decor - 3 stars (lots of bamboo fencing to divide areas... but lreminded us of a friend's cool "Man Cave"/garage.) Men's Room - 1 star (horrible with torn wallpaper & graffiti on the walls like a gas station.) If it wasn't for the bathroom, we would have been raving about this place.

Tasty, but not the epitome of sushi. Good prices and their All-you-can-eat is a good deal.
(3)Lynne T.
Meh. The atmosphere is good, but the food was very mediocre. It would be nicer if the rolls had more substance rather than mostly rice. Save your sushi cravings for another venue. I Love Sushi is a much better option in the neighborhood.

This is a regular destination for us whenever one of us gets a paycheck. The staff are friendly, the sake and beer are reasonably priced, and the fish is high quality. The "crunch roll" is cream cheese, unagi, and avacado, the whole thing fried in tempura. The girlfriend is fond of telling me that if it were a person, she'd leave me for it. If you pick up a copy of the Alibi - the free local paper - and find the coupon, you can get all of the rolls for half price if you pay cash. We usually walk away for a price only slightly higher than if you go with the all-you-can-eat, but with access to more menu items than are available on the separate all-you-can-eat menu. Only one quibble - they don't carry uni.
(5)Ryan H.
Went here based on reviews. Great recommendation. Small. Quiet, friendly service. And the $18 all you can eat lunch was a steal. Especially liked the dragon roll.
(4)Gary N.
We went to Sushi Gen because of the reviews and we were in the mood for sushi. We ordered the $20 all you can eat special (it is available on the weekends too). we were served a boatload of sushi and enjoyed it all. The Crunch Roll is to die for.

I really like this place. Its one of two places you can get all you can eat sushi... Me and my boyfriend have been there many times. Whats odd though is that sometimes the rice doesnt taste as good or the service isnt as good. The older lady working there somtimes has PMS and tries not to be mean, but can come off as rude. But I love stuffing my face with all you can eat sushi. Its not the best tasting, but for the proce its good.
