This place gets busy at night bit the sushi is really good. It's known for it's super crunch roll which is great ( it's not raw). Do reservations on the weekend because there is not that much seating

Not bad at all for desert-country sushi. I had some exceptional tuna (beautifully ruby-red and melt-in-your-mouth delicious) as well as a decent warm house sake. Squid salad is pretty standard but everything else was most definitely above-average and reasonably priced. Also, watching people's notes go by on the boats that circle the sushi bar definitely made the night more interesting. I'll definitely be back for more sushi with a distinctive Southwest flair.

First this place is kinda cute with the whole sushi bar boat circling thing.. The main negative is that my husband and I felt this was a bit overpriced for what you got.... Everything did seem to be prepared well and with care but just too expensive for Albuquerque and the portions. We shared the sashimi combo B.. Very thiiiinn pieces of sashimi and didn't even give any yellowtail...and had crummy quality tuna..though it was prepared nicely visually speaking my husband couldn't get over the stingy cuts of fish. We had one of the special rolls of the night .. The "sexy roll" which was pretty good.. The sushi chef brought out a big torch to flame very lightly the fish on top of the roll which was cool to see. One other positive thing was that we ordered the sweet shrimp nigiri which typically is served with a fried shrimp head... Well let me tell you this was the biggest fried shrimp head I have ever seen. It was fantastic! The sad part was when we got our bill and it was 100$.... (we also had a small bottle of sake). Since there are so many other sushi restaurants with the same quality of sushi for cheaper we probably won't be coming back.

I was a bit leery of ordering sushi in a desert state, but this was some of the best I have had. The service was great, prices were reasonable and the rolls were fantastic. We ordered far too much - 4 rolls for 2 people plus tamago and inari - and ended up with plenty leftover. The fish was exceptionally fresh and melt in your mouth. Apparntly you don't need water nearby to have great sushi.

Loved the lil boats floating by. Haven't been in here for a while. Maybe next time I'm in town :)

Surprisingly, you can find decent sushi in the desert, and Shogun is one of those places. Decent prices, prompt service, fairly typical atmosphere for a sushi restaurant, with the added bonus of a sushi boat bar. Eaten here a few times and always enjoyed it.

Shogun is one of my favourite sushi joints and, being in Nob Hill, is in one of the better night time spots of Albuquerque. The pricing is standard and there is not much seating, but I highly recommend sitting around the sushi bar to watch the sushi chefs work. They have delicious specialty sushi rolls. I believe my favourite sushi is their Monkey Ball. Honestly, it has been a while since being here and in Albuquerque, but I wanted put a plug in for Shogun. So, yes, come here for sushi when in Albuquerque!

First of all I was disappointed to learn that this place was not a conveyor belt place...there is nothing but little wooden boats with wasabi and pickled ginger on it...boring! The sushi is very expensive to me..I've had amazing sushi at a better price..maybe because of the location we were in? I dunno...My boyfriend and I decided on the bento lunch though and it was quite tasty and filling for the price. I would come back for the bento but not for the sushi.

We tried a lot of sushi restaurants all over the world and this place is awesome compared to most that we've been to. There is not a single roll there that doesn't disappoint us. We live 3 and a half hours away and have taken as many as 20 friends from Alamogordo, NM to shogun. And guess what? Every single one of them LOVES it here. It's a to go place when we all come here for vacation. Btw, the monkey ball s our favorite. Don't forget to try this place. It's very clean and the staff is very courteous!

Shogun is not a bad choice for people who live in Albuquerque. I am only here for visit from San Francisco, so I can't say that Shogun is on the top of my list, but I do agree with many others that the quality isn't bad. I ordered sashimi, hand rolls, and seafood udon. All of them are okay. The only complaint I have is that the noodle is not chewy and it sort of disappointed me. Overall not a bad place for lunch.

Shogun exceeded expectations that were modest due to our location far from the seas. The sushi was generous and diverse, with a deep selection of rolls and vegetarian options. The fish wasn't fantastic, but not bad and the eel gave me the sushi-gasm I sought. On the other hand, the tuna on the Dragon Roll was bland. Service was helpful as we sought advice for a pregnant diner in our group. Decor was standard, without an overdose of "you are in Japan" touches. View out to Central Ave. provided nice people-watching.

This place is disgusting. I've been there twice. The first time, we were bothered by an annoying fly buzzing around our table. The rice tasted stale, and everything was much too salty. Well, I like to give things a second chance. Several months later we returned. Guess what? We got the fly buzzing around again! Unbelievable. The food was even worse. (one side dish smelled like stinky shoes). A busboy came by our table and reached his hairy arm right across my face to retrieve an empty soup dish as I was about to take a bite from my chopsticks. Talk about uncouth! I'm a person that usually keeps my mouth shut if I have nothing nice to say, but I really have to put this review out there in hopes the owners read it and work to improve the quality of their food and service. I also believe in leaving a generous tip. I did not leave a tip on my last visit, and I feel no guilt about that! Shame begets shame :(

Absolute best sushi on the planet! The sushi chefs work in the center of a large area. Once they make your order they put it on on a conveyor belt with boats. Shogun has excellent spider rolls (flash fried soft shell crab) and absolutely out of this world green chile rolls. The roasted green chile is tempura fried and rolled with a wonderful sauce. Try it, it's not like anything you've had before.

Was suspicious at first as it looks like a storefront out of Reservoir Dogs, but was pleasantly surprised at the good sushi and the decadent Chirashi bowl. Extra points for our cute waitress, asked her what one of the fish pieces in my chirashi was and she pointed to my fiance's atomic roll and said, "Oh, I don't know, but that part is seaweed." We were like ohhhhhhhhhhhh, okay. Cool, thanks. Not knocking her she was awesome and service is great and I've worked at many restaurants where the chefs would have popped an eyeball listening to me describe their food. It was funny.

Reliably good sushi over the 8 yrs i've been coming. Brown rice option with sushi rolls is great. Sit by the boats around the sushi bar.

Probably one of the best sushi dinners I've EVER had! The Uni was amazing and the sashimi was big and fresh. The sweet shrimp was also over the top good. The little boats floating around are cute but bring paper and pens to really kick it up. I'm definitely coming back.

In all Albuquerque, this is my favorite sushi place. If there are a few of you sit at the sushi bar where you can watch the sushi chefs create. I have taken people here from San Francisco, from Boston, from Chicago, from LA, from San Diego, from Houston, and from New York, everyone was so surprised that we could have sushi this great and this inexpensive in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Picking up my girlfriend from the airport tonight and heading right over to show gun to eat some sushi!

  • Mister S.

Ate here last night and have spent the entire morning in the bathroom with food poisoning. Pretty sure it was from a bad salmon hand roll that smelled off. I was already worried about eating sushi in Albuquerque and this experience has confirmed my fears. What a nightmare! Eat here at your own risk.

I'm giving this restaurant 2starts because of the food flavor. ..nothing else. me and my wife chose the table are for quite, the service was invisible there was a guy playing with his tablet at the register. ..rude (tables or boats) ...I thought it was very pricey for the amount of food in the plate (French Stile) minimalistic. 50$ for three dishes that fit in 1 plate they lost me. ..I've eaten sushi all around. ..this restaurant doesn't stand to the reviews I read at this website. ..sorry for the honesty.

Shogun has been around for as long as I can remember and still puts together a fine meal if you're wandering Nob Hill looking for a Japanese option. During my last visit we went light on the sushi and instead had agedashi tofu, grilled squid, and some rolls. The agedashi tofu was unusually salty compared with similar offerings in town and I found myself wishing the grilled squid was a grilled whole squid but the rolls were good and the miso soup they brought was tasty as well. Overall, a solid option, but nothing here will surprise you.

I am a vegetarian and thus not the first person you would come to for a sushi recommendation, but I absolutely love Shogun. I withhold the fifth star only because I cannot speak to the quality of their fish, although appearances and word-of-mouth suggest that everything is very fresh and lovingly prepared. You wonder what a vegetarian eats at a sushi place? Only the most amazing New Mexico roll available in the city, with delicate rice, green chile fried in tempura batter to crispy, golden-brown perfection, and a kick-ass spicy mayo. Their tempura plate is scrumptious. It features the usual suspects-potato, sweet potato, onion, mushrooms, carrot, plump shrimp I watch my boyfriend enjoy-but the tempura is exceptionally light and crisp, and served piping hot. I like to sit at the bar and watch the sushi chefs in action. Their working motions are positively imbued with precision and professionalism, and we always make sure to tip them for their art, separate from our servers. While waiting for your sushi I recommend writing evocative notes on your chopstick wrappers, and sending them around to your fellow diners on the lovely bamboo boats that drift pleasantly around the bar. It's amusing to discover what return notes come floating back to you! As a side note to my fellow vegetarians, please be aware that many Japanese sauces and broths (such as the tempura dipping sauce and the miso) are prepared with dashi, which is a classic Japanese broth most often made with fish stock. Less radical vegetarians might be okay with that; vegans not so much. I haven't been to Shogun in a few months, but I hope the host with amazing anime hair still works there. He makes everything taste more delicious.

Average quality fish. They have the floating boats that circle the sushi chefs. Pricing was ok. We went on a Thur @ 6pm and had no problem sitting at the sushi bar. I believe the parking meters outside are free after 6pm. We ordered a sushi roll w/green chili & it came with no green chili. We asked where it was, they said it was in there. Server was attentive. Overall it was ok.

Shogun sushi does simple sushi well! It's great having a solid sushi restaurant in Nob Hill, and the fish they use is quality. We enjoy the rolls and sashimi there but wish there was slightly more "creative" specialty rolls available. However, it's great sitting around the the sushi bar watching the boats go by as a team of chefs prepare your meal. What I like best is being able to tell them to customize the rolls a bit. I love extra extra spicy tuna rolls and they will try to accommodate that. Service is always prompt and your get your food quickly...but in little pieces at a time if you get sushi. I really prefer this because you're not overwhelmed with 6 rolls at once! I will continue to go to Shogun whenever my sushi/fish craving hits.

My husband, daughter and I left with our stomachs in pain. We think it was the tempura or edamame. We will never go back!

I am only choosing 4 stars instead of 5 because it is a bit expensive for Albuquerque. A basic sushi roll is 10.50, and is not a large roll. Given that...the sushi is fresh, the service very nice, and the atmosphere is pleasant. It's small and cozy and there is a sushi bar to sit around that is fun.

    (4)
  • Janet P.

Unbelievably terrible. From the watery miso soup to the lukewarm sake, everything about the meal was worse than mediocre. Hamachi so old and dry it was flaky, the tempura crust on the fried tofu a doughy mess, and the fatty tuna chewy with gristle. No pillows of fluffy rice under fresh slabs of succulent fish here, folks. Meager in every way, from the food to the service to the seemingly 15-year-old sushi chefs. Avoid at all costs, not worth a dime...

I'm a sushi snob, there, I said it. I've been lucky enough to have frequented some of the best sushi places on both the West and East coasts. Yes, I understand that we are in the desert and sushi may not be as phenomenal as it can be when there is easier access to fresh seafood. So I will try to judge Shogun from a Southwestern perspective. That said, I found the sushi to be underwhelming. The rice was a little on the dry side and my rainbow roll looked anorexic. Someone sure is skimping on the fish in this joint. My spicy tuna rolls had more cucumber than anything else. Where's the fish yo? Three rolls came in to about 25 bucks. I would be okay with that if the portions were reasonable and if I could actually taste the fish in my rolls. I'd be happier if it was priced at supermarket or school cafeteria sushi prices because that's what it tasted like. Still, I have so many friends who love Shogun that I will give it another chance at some point. For now, my conclusion is that it's overpriced for what you get. Now if only Noda's would reopen again...where are they?!?!

    (3)
  • Rebecca T.

Ugh. So I TRIED to give Shogun another chance. Service was better but we ordered 2 different rolls and both tasted like they had been stored in the fridge for bit too long :-(. Guess we will mark Shogun off the list for good.

Loved this sushi restaurant since college. Me and my girlfriends would go every week and eat sushi by the boat. Literally...they have a boat around the sushi bar that delivers your sushi. Great place for a date night, good prices and tasty sushi. Wine list and saki is very good compared to other sushi restaurants in the area.

I come here for the chirashi bowl. I love raw fish so this hits the spot, and it's the best quality and flavor I've been able to find in this landlocked part of the country. At $24, it feels a little overpriced, but I suppose that's because there just isn't fish around here. All in all, I'll definitely keep coming back for this when a craving hits, but it just doesn't measure up to what's available on the coasts of the US. I hate to say this, but the last time I got the chirashi bowl, I got a stomach ache that lasted all night. I hope it wasn't from less-than-fresh fish...

You have to try the Green Chili Roll! Local favorite. Great sushi. Really enjoy the staff and the excellent chefs make the best sushi in town.

It's pretty decent. Their lunch menu isn't really lunch enough or priced well enough to get a side. But the sushi is decent and the boats are fun

It was a crowded Friday night when we went to Shogun and it was hard to get attention from the staff. It was also sort of chaotic and smelled fishy in that way that is slightly concerning in sushi restaurants. The yellowtail nigiri was much fresher than I expected, and I was very happy with the fish. However, the rice was overcooked (mushy), which is bad news for sushi. They offer very little in the way of sake. I imagine it's a good place for crazy fried rolls jam-packed with all the popular ingredients, but don't bother if you're nigiri/sashimi or sake enthusiast.

  • Erin R.

Cute place! Good sushi. I think my favorite part is the atmosphere at the sushi bar! There are boats that serve your sushi! So fun! Not the most mind blowin sushi I have ever had, but definitely a good spot to get some yum in your tum :) (sorry, weird mood) BUT def worth a stop. I recommend the ABQ roll 86 the tempura. Very light and for sure my favorite of the night!

LOVED this sushi restaurant in Albuquerque! First of all, you get to watch the sushi being prepared, and then it comes to you in a little boat. Whaaaaat? I've been to lots of sushi restaurants and I've never seen that anywhere else. Pretty charming. Then, the sushi is pretty good. I liked everything I tried here. My only minor complaint is that, when they're busy, sometimes there aren't seats available! When you live 2.5 hours away and you're driving here JUST to go to Shogun for sushi, you'll probably be pretty bummed if you can't. That was my experience, at least! Otherwise, loved this place. Would definitely recommend.

This place is great. Although it's a small space, the funky samurai helmet with antlers, and Godzilla on the shelves, plus a friendly staff make for a fun and cozy atmosphere. I tried the green chile roll and smoked salmon roll on my first visit, both to die for! Must go back ASAP.

No complaints here. Always devour our food. Best Green Chile Tempura rolls in town. Super polite and attentive staff. Plus, passing notes to other customers on the boats is quite entertaining. LUV IT:)

This is my new favorite sushi place in Albuquerque. The sushi is well priced, ranging from 4-13 dollars per roll. It tastes fresh and delicious. Service was speedy quick. Complimentary miso soup! The super crunch roll was divine. It was a really good and delicious experience, and my husband and I will definitely be back for more!

  • Lyssa D.

Ok, this was ok sushi. I actually was planning on going to another place, that was closed on this night, and drove down Central in search of sushi. That led to a stop at Shogun. My mom and I came together, we ordered the Crazy roll, a tuna roll, squid salad, and my mom got salmon nigiri. To start with, the miso soup was a big meh -1..., the Crazy roll was very good, 2 points, the tuna roll was again just fine1 point, and my mom enjoyed her salmon 2 points. The squid salad was a big "not yummy" -2. The wasabi was not hot -1, but I love the boats that drift by with ginger and wasabi, 2 point. My math skills are questionable, but that leaves me at a 3.

Over all the sushi is pretty good. But what makes shogun special are 1. The staff and 2. The super crunch roll. The staff were so nice, every time I have been in consistently. It is such a lovely dining experience, even when it is packed. And the super crunch roll is sooooo good. Seriously, you should just order one already.

I have been meaning to write a review of Shogun for months. This by far is the best sushi place in the Albuquerque Metro or even the state of New Mexico. I am not sure, but I know it has been open over 15 years. My best friend Donald and I go here just for the unagi-bowl(eel for you novices), our waiter which knows us when we come in, asks if we want our regular, it takes a bit longer than other dishes, but worth it. You must try the mussels also, a stranger next to me at the sushi bar shared one with me, they are now my favorite appetizer. Sushi in the desert? Yes you can have quality sushi and excellent service. One more thing, on fun nights, the sushi chefs will even do a saki-bomb with patrons.

  • Jonathan O.

I wanted to give this 5 stars but I try not to do that to often. It was very close though. The thing is not everything is as good as my favorite - the chirashi. But forget about that other stuff, the chirashi is a work of art that is absolutely delicious. Stuffed with good eats they even make it without the stuff I dont like. No tamago and no cooked shrimp. I would recommend this place highly, and will certainly eat there on my next business trip to ALB.

  • Juan R.

Surprised by all the good reviews here. Another poor quality sushi restaurant whose chef cannot either get sushi quality fish or doesn't know how to purchase the right amounts. You generally don't even have to taste the fish to know it is old, by only looking at the display you can already tell it is supermaket old. I went for the nigiri special which brings nigiri, a roll and a hand roll. I also got a separate roll. All were sub-par in quality. I am still in search of a good sushi restaurant in Albuquerque, so far they are all bad. Kokoro has great cooked japanese food but bad sushi.

    (2)
  • C M.

The service was great but the nigiri left much to be desired. Maguro was very thin and imitation crab was substituted for my Kani nigiri. I don't expect great sushi in NM but this was not up to par.

After having a terrible time a nearby local restaurant, I took my husband to here to redeem the evening. We had a great time - I only eat veggie sushi and it was great! My husband had the mackerel, albacore tuna and smoked salmon - he loved them! I had a wonderful time! The food is good - we had the large beer and it was great! The price was right and the service was quick and friendly :) We will definitely go back and recommend this place to others!

I had literally one of the worst experiences I've ever had at a restaurant. We sat down and I ordered sushi and a chicken dish. I told the server that my boyfriend is allergic to shellfish and to make sure there is none in or touching the sushi. When he brought it out, it had crab. When I pointed it out, he just stood there looking at me, not offering to take it back or anything. He then said he *thought* it was imitation crab, but he wasn't sure. After checking with the chef, he said "scratch that - maybe there is shellfish in there." He clearly didn't know the menu and didn't really care that we were unhappy. Neither did the chef. It made us nervous and my boyfriend just sat there hungry. Then, 35 minutes later, the chicken dish still hadn't come out. He had forgotten to even put in the order. 45 minutes later, our food STILL hadn't come out. We told him to forget it and I asked to speak with the manager. He then brought the bill, and even after the fiasco with the shellfish, charging us extra for all fish and no shellfish. Keep in mind that my boyfriend still had no dinner and was starving by this point. When I explained our experience to the manager, both he and the server literally just stood there staring. They did not offer to reduce the bill or even apologize for the experience. It was not until I specifically asked them to discount the bill, that they FINALLY offered to void it. We never did get our chicken dish - we just walked across the street to a food truck for dinner. What bothered me the most is that they just stood there with blank stares and no offer whatsoever to make things right. It was like they did not care whether we were happy or not. This used to be one of my favorite places, but I think it has gone downhill over the years.

  • Paul H.

Yes, it'll make you nervous to have your sushi prepared in the middle of the desert by a white guy. I'm not the biggest sushi snob, so I think it's A-OK. I haven't gone lately because I've found another restaurant I like more that I get a good discount at, but Shogun was once the only place I frequented for sushi. The sushi is typically fresh, and the wait staff is very helpful and friendly, as well as accommodating. The udon noodles are very good, but usually I only go for sushi. It's fresh enough, and the price is reasonable. The atmosphere is great. Your sushi is delivered to you on a floating boat, and the lighting is not overbearing. It's a little bit of a hipster spot, but I can deal. One problem is that the pickled ginger and wasabe sometimes dries out on the boats as it doesn't get replaced - just wait for a fresh one to come by. On the whole, definitely a good sushi joint, but there are better places in town, in terms of value and in quality.

  • Andy C.

Classic sushi spot. Make their own homemade sauces. Lots of ABQ touches like jalapeno and green chile. r Line out the door most of the time. Arrive early or plan to wait.

    (4)
  • Vince P.

I have been here twice. The first time - it was awesome. The second time (recently), it was very good. It is a bit pricey considering it is Albuquerque. A must to try is the 'ABQ' roll which has local influences like green chile. The miso soup was outstanding. My recent visit - it took quite awhile to get my sushi orders (I sat at the bar, and it was not busy - honestly it was the longest I have ever waited for sushi). The chef was somewhere between quiet and rude. That was opposite to my last visit where the chef regaled the finer items in great detail. I'll be back, but they do have competition up the block I may try next time.
