Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

I feel like I am constantly on the search for "the perfect New Mexican food". I feel like Richard's comes close to perfect. I had zero idea that this cute little place existed and then when I found it I continued to forget about it because of it's location. However, I found myself walking in on a saturday afternoon. The service is absolutely incredible and we chose to sit on their sidewalk patio(HOW CUTE IS THAT). When you order tea they bring you an entire container so you don't have to wait for refills. Our waitress was super quick and friendly and I can't complain about her at all. I ordered the frito pie. Whatever they use to cook is obviously incredibly fresh. This wasn't the frito pie I'm used to, but instead is fritos topped with ground beef, beans, NM chile, lettuce, and cheese. It was absolutely fresh and the textures were perfect! It was definitely not a heavy or overly salty meal which I was halfway expecting! I can't wait to go back and try more things!

This is my ALL TIME favorite New Mexican restaurant in Albuquerque! I am a native and can cook New Mexican food pretty good so I am rather picky when it comes to this type of fare. The salsa is delicious and the sopapillas are to die for. My daughter grew up on the delicious fideos which are a rare side dish here in Albuquerque. My favorite dishes are the tacos because the beef is shredded and delicious not your typical ground beef. The papitas, which are a side option are delicious red potatoes with onions. My other favorite item on the menu are the vegetarian tamales. They are so cheesy and wonderful! The red chile is so delicious and authentic! The staff are always friendly and attentive. I have been going faithfully since 1998 and so far it continues to be my favorite New Mexican food spot in Albuquerque!

Holy mother of garlic. My poor husband later tonight. I stopped in for lunch because I needed to go to World Market. I'd eaten here once or twice several years ago when I lived away. My grandmother-in-law likes this place. I recall not liking their food, but couldn't remember why. I think I now remember. Service was pleasant and quick. I was given chips and garlic (ahem, I mean salsa). My main dish was the tamale plate with red chile. It came with beans and I selected the side of fideos. The tamale was pretty good, the whole beans a little boring and garlicky, while the fideos were over-the-top garlicky. I'm kind of dying as I write this. I think this place thinks that if they add a ton of garlic to everything and give you a whole wheat tortilla, that it must be health food. Little do they know... I was hoping my memory had failed me, but no. No it has not. I probably will not be back unless dragged here by my husband's grandma.

Outstanding. I liked it - A LOT. Not sure if I'm just tired of the "Tex-Mex" garbage we're fed at home, or if I just disagree with other reviewers but this is good stuff! Generous portions excellently prepared. Fresh ingredients properly seasoned. And attentive service from a nice lady advising my delicate gringo palate against the hot green stuff.

Very adequate Mexican in a shopping strip plaza...you'll be pleasantly surprised...food was good, value was good, and service was too! Would go again.

Nice restaurant in a shopping plaza not far from where I work. I stopped in a bit after 1pm for lunch on a weekday. Waitstaff was friendly and I was seated right away. They have what I'd call a typical 'mom & pop' New Mexican restaurant menu, with clearly marked vegetarian options. I ordered a tamale plate with red chile, papitas, beans & sopapillas with honey. The food arrived after a very short wait and was tasty & filling. One of the waitresses on her lunch break sat down at the next table to eat & struck up a friendly conversation with me. All in all, a great lunch choice for New Mexican food. I will definitely return.

where do I start, the food here is HORRIBLE ,the sopapillas were biscuits cut in triangles ,old lettuce, un ripe tomatoes, cold food, rude waitress, sticky table, should I go on ? ok I will, the chili reano was flat with no stem, the taco was good!! but the lettuce bas slimy, the red chili was tasteless and orange, the green chili was bland and weak and watery DONT EAT HERE NASTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Happy dance! Finally got my Mexican fix on and am one happy camper. I ate my usual - lentil enchiladas, easy cheese with Christmas on the side. Will be in a good mood for the rest of the day! Always consistent. Always fresh. Always healthy.

My favorite place to go in Albuquerque! I am (usually) health conscious, and they will steam your tortillas for the enchiladas. Nothing is lost in the taste--their red chile gives you all the taste you need. I always order lentil enchiladas which come with a choice of sides. Coffee is good, sopapillas are great! Am, unfortunately, I find their lemon meringue pie irrestible! My friends lov Richards, too. I don't know management's secret as to how to keep waitresses, but I have been to Richards many, many times anf their waitresses are always A play s in a their service and attitude.

This place is really good and the staff is super friendly. ...top notch greasy spoon Mexican/ New Mexican. You won't be disappointed.

The food here is delicious and they have great vegetarian options. I especially like the veggie tacos and tamales and anything with red chile. And their iced tea is the best in town.

By far my favorite local Mexican place! Richard's whole goal is to attempt a healthier alternative to the refried world of Mexican food- and they succeed wonderfully! The salsa is made fresh everyday and you can certainly tell! They have low-carb options as well as a vegan taco plate-something for everyone's taste! *Richard's is only open for breakfast and lunch *The waitstaff leaves something to be desired if you're used to polite customer service.

From what I've heard, Richards's has been around forever. When you walk in, you can see that it's been around since at least the early 90s... they're making that design job last. You know what? It doesn't matter, because Richard's is pretty good food. As a recent vegan, I've been seeking out places that serve meat-and-cheese-less New Mexican favorites. Richard's has a whole section of the menu devoted to enchiladas and burritos made with lentils and brown rice seasoned with maybe just a little bit too much black pepper, but it's still very good. Both the red and green are hot and flavorful. Watch out for the "market price" guacamole... we made the mistake of ordering it without asking and paid $9 for pretty average guac; we'd paid $1/avocado that week at the grocery store. The last knock on this place is that while the serving staff is generally nice, there is a sort of blasé attitude that permeates.

I seem to go here every time I go to ABQ to visit my family. I like their veggie tostadas with guacamole. It is some of the healthier Mexican I've encountered....so I like it.

Went to Richards today for lunch. It's a great place and I heard it a local hangout I had a stuff sopailla with shredded beef it came with beans and papitas the taste and presentation was good and the red chile tasted like homemade we will go back really soon

Is the food good? Yes. Is it outstanding? No. Unfortunately the price is far beyond what good food should cost. For a couple bucks more, I could have went to Sadie's, and that is what I consider outstanding Mexican. With that said, I will say, I had the chili relleno plate, and it was very unique, and tasty. If it was $6, I would have been super happy, but it was $10.

My FAVORITE for the past 15 + years. HOMEMADE salsa served when you are seated. Entrees made with FRESH ingredients, dark green leafy lettuce not the cheap iceberg stuff. REAL CHEESE not 'cheese food product' . REAL guacamole with NO FILLERS. SHREDDED BEEF and CHICKEN BREAST used not the gross ground beef and chicken parts you find at some other restaurants. EXCELLENT CHILI, (((my favorite being the red)))) made fresh every day. LEAN CARNE ADOVADA probably the best in town. FLAUTAS to die for! Outdoor patio in nice weather. Only open breakfast & lunch M-S, 8am to 3:30pm, closed Sunday.

Good, fresh New Mexican food done a bit healthier than most but still tasty. Last I checked they did shredded beef rather than ground beef, whole beans rather than refried beans, etc. Give it a try!

One of my favorites. Smallish, well kept restraunt that doesn't do dinner. It is a special treat when I'm in town for lunch. The salsa is wonderful and the red chili OS ground right in the kitchen. The staff is always friendly, but service can vary based on who you get.

Really good fresh mexican food. And the best service in town.
(5)clayton p.
Food was bland and overpriced. Service was also mediocre. There's much better mexican places to go. Don't waste your time here
(1)Alice S.
I've found Richard's to be consistently excellent over the years. Delicious New Mexican food, mostly prepared healthier than your typical ABQ NMexican. The service is efficient and friendly. I only wish it was open for dinner!

This is one of favorite mexican restaurant in abq, its just a different type of mexican that u try at other places, its healthy, not so cheesy, i love it
(4)Lori G.
This place was awful. They had round store bought Tostitos chips and melted Velveeta queso. The lemonade I ordered ended up being pink and it tasted like Country Time lemonade. The only thing that was decent was our server. She was very nice and attentive. DO NOT EAT HERE!!!
