I came here because I had purchased a Groupon with a $10 off coupon that I needed to use, and with all that said I have bad luck trying random Asian restaurants... This place has a potential to be a descent restaurant. It may never top the Japanese Kitchen, but it has potential. My skepticism started when we realized the restaurant was in a strip mall in between an Albertsons and like 4-5 other Asian type restaurants, but having already purchased the Groupon there was no going back. We walked in and the hostess was very friendly, but we were the only customers the restaurant had the entire hour we were there! We decided to sit at a teppan table hoping we would warm up because it was so cold in the restaurant. After taking our order a young cook came out to make our food, and he too was also very nice and personable. However, when considering the food, there is a need for improvement. The soup was not good (in my preference). It was dark brown and most of the contents settled to the bottom resembling dirty dish water, and the salad was mainly iceberg lettuce which was okay for me. Although with the main dishes the rice and chicken, would have been good but it had WAY TOO MUCH SALT, but on the other hand the vegetables were very good. Although, between the dark, cold, and quite atmosphere and the high prices I would rather go to the Japanese Kitchen or Azuma. It is sad to say I will not return here.

Myself and a friend came in the other night for dinner and ordered a sushi boat. We were pleasantly surprised when the sushi chef came out to talk with us before starting our order so he could figure out what kinds of combinations of fish we enjoyed more than others as well as to get a feeling of what we were craving. I will agree, the meal takes a while.. almost 2 hours for us. Although we did order a giant sushi boat and there was only one sushi chef there to prepare our boat. When the food came out, it was quite good. My only complaint is that it had all but one of the rolls with the same items on the inside. Which makes me get a little tired after the 3rd bite. Overall though, the experience was very good and my friend explained that she would love to go back again soon. So next time we get sushi..we'll be heading here

We had a GREAT experience!! The sushi chef came out and taught my girlfriend and I how to mix the wasabi and soy to decrease the clumps- he then taught us how to use chop sticks like a pro... Very friendly and nice waitress and the chef!! I'm coming back...

Kind of dark inside. Bring your glasses to read the menu! We had a Groupon for Nippon Sushi and decided to give this place a whirl today since the Groupon expires soon. When we walked in, everyone in our party noticed it was really dark inside. Lighting was scarce and made it difficult for some of us to read the menu. We were given the options of sitting at the sushi bar, regular seating, or gathering 'round the teppan grill. We opted for a regular booth since we were there with friends we haven't seen in awhile and wanted to catch up and socialize. As we sat down at our table, the waitress gave us a sheet of paper to mark our sushi selections. The ghetto part - it was a previously used sushi order sheet that clearly had erase marks and faint tallies of a previous order. Ghetto! Everyone was given miso soup to start, which was pretty good. I ordered the vegetable tempura as an appetizer and two rolls (spicy scallop and a soft shell crab roll). My tempura was pretty good. It seemed like they added extra little bits of crunchy, fried batter on the tempura. When I ate it, it was a bit messy with bits of small, fried batter going every which-way. My rolls were pretty good for it being Albuquerque, but not the best I've had. The bf had a California roll, which was okay, and also ordered the Korean spicy pork BBQ plate which came with rice and some veggies. I had a bite and it was pretty good, but didn't have that kick you get from "spicy" Korean food that I love so much. In addition to some Korean food, they also have some Vietnamese options. Overall, this place is okay. Nothing really stood out as really good or really bad.

Dirty ! filthy! Yes, that was my mistake. I was there with my wife on my way home from Jemez Springs last Sunday. Actually, we were heading to the very nicely-reviewed Japanese restaurant near this place but it was closed. So disappointed but decided to try this place instead because of hunger. Yes, it was my mistake. The inside of restaurants was OK. Although it had tepanyaki grills, we chose to sit at the sushi bar because we love to watch how sushi and rolls are made. There was only one mid-aged Asian chef who did not wear gloves were preparing sushi and rolls for all customers. We had ordered various nigiris and rolls including salmon, tuna, shrimp, and eel. While waiting for our food, unfortunately, we noticed that the chef were taking the tips with his bare hands. Specifically, he touched the bills then made our sushi without washing his hands. I tried to ignore it bc i didnt want to ruin dinner with my wife by pointing it out. But my wife also noticed the chef was using his wet towel in various ways. After counting the bills, the chef wiped his hands on the wet towel instead of washing his hands. The filthy part was he even used the towel to absorb moisture of sushi before serving it and to wipe the cutting table and knife. Although my tuna and salmon sushi were served, my wife and I could not eat them because we'd already lost our appetite . When a wasabi ball rolled by the same wet towel he had been using was served, my wife wanted me leave the restaurant. I don't know much about the taste of nippon sushi. But, I am sure I will never ever go there again.

Where do I start... this restaurant is excellent! It opened recently and people just don't know about this place! In the last month we've been there at least once a week... On our first visit, five of us sat at the sushi bar -- It was a feast filled with a plethora of flavor! The sushi was fresh, and deliciously and artfully prepared. We were delighted to try yellowtail, salmon, tuna, octopus, and oysters. On another occasion Mr. Lee prepared clam boats, a jalapeno tempura, and some squid hand rolls that were out of this world. He and his wife are both so friendly and both seem to know their stuff! He has been doing it for more than 30 years. We had to try their teppan too! Danny does a fabulous job cooking (he uses his own secret seasoning). Husband tried the Osaka Supreme (lobster and filet mignon) and I ordered the Sumo dinner (chicken and shrimp). They were both perfectly cooked and tender. We also tried their fried calamari and... OMG -- don't even think of having it anywhere else - it was amazing. I can't think of anywhere else where I liked sushi and teppan better. We really enjoy going there and have not been dissappointed one bit. They always welcome us with a smile and a friendly hug. We chat have a good time. We look forward to going back again, and again, and again... IMHO, this is the best sushi and teppan in Abq -- You gotta try Nippon. You won't be disappointed.

My girlfriend and I found this little gem today by doing a drive-by on the way from Hastings and decided to look at the menu posted outside. After careful consideration, we decided to dine with them and got way more than we bargained for. The waitress was nice but the chef was the one who made this more an experience than a simple meal. We even got lessons on how to properly use chopsticks (ha!) and correctly mix the wasabi and soy sauce. We decided on the Las Vegas roll and the Shrimp Tempura roll. The chef asked us what our preferences were in fish and other flavors and recommended the Special Salmon roll while not being pushy at all. So glad he recommended it because that was the best roll! The Special Salmon roll had a perfect combination with the tanginess of the pickle, tartness of the lemon wedge, the sweetness of the cream cheese and of course the salmon. What I enjoy about this restaurant is although the prices are comparable with others in the city, the rice is not used as a filler and the other ingredients get to come out and play. The chef really knows his sushi and you can tell loves to get to know his customers. Sadly, we were the only two in the restaurant for that hour. It is dim as others have stated but that didn't take away from our meal by any means. We have been to many sushi places around town and all over California and rather than drenching the sushi in sauces, the specialty rolls really allow the flavors to speak for themselves.

Wow.... I was excited to try this restaurant seeing the great reviews. Boy was I wrong. I was completely disappointed in this restaurant. Pretty livid with our experience. First of all, my husband and I walk into the restaurant at 8:30pm on a Friday night and noticed only two other couples dining in. The restaurant is almost completely empty. My initial impression was to walk out at that point but decided we would give the place a try. We decided to try out the "at the all-you-can eat". When given the menu, we notice that not all the items were available, only the items that were highlight (~1/2 the items on the sushi list). I guess I could say that I am spoiled coming from California, where there were no limitations on what you could order for all you can eat. I guess sushi restaurants do it differently in New Mexico. They also restrict you from ordering more than 5 items at one time. My husband and I took a couple minutes picking out our first 5 items and turn in the sushi sheet to our waitress. We were not expecting any miso soup or salad but apparently it comes with the all-you-can eat. The miso soup arrived at the table 15 minutes after we placed our order. 15 minutes later, the salad arrived. 15 minutes after that, 4 out of the 5 items that we ordered arrived at our table. Did I mention that the restaurant was pretty empty? We literally waited 45 min. for a couple orders of salmon/albacore sushi and three rolls. After waiting a little over an hour, the waitress asked if we needed anything else. We mentioned that we had been waiting for a spicy tuna roll but asked her to just cancel the order. We decided it wasn't worth our time to wait any longer. How is this even all-you-can eat when you can only put it one order and not have it fulfilled? I am shocked that this place is still open. To top it all off, a buser who was deliverying an order of philadelphia roll to another table was asked by the guests what type of roll was being served. He did not know and had to yell over at the sushi chef to verify that it was indeed a philadelphia roll. We also noticed that the restaurant charged the same party for a sashimi plate they had ordered, which surprisingly never came out! Please do not waste your time coming here. Sakura is another sushi restaurant in the adjacent shopping plaza. They have much better service and better quality sushi. Although Sakura is not all-you-can eat, your money and time will be better spent there.

I wasn't quite sure what my experience would be like after reading its reviews however I decided to give it a shot anyway. Man, I'm so glad I went cause I was pleasantly surprised! My guest and I arrive right when dinner service started. We decided to have a few drinks before ordering any food. Our waitress was great...she kept checking on us and was extremely patient with us. As soon as we were ready to order - it didn't take long for us to get our food. They have a wide variety of sushi and it was really yummy! The decor could use a little help but overall pretty great! I would definetly go back!!

I stumbled upon this gem after the gym one afternoon. They weren't open, but served me anyway. Sonny, the sushi chef, was really friendly and more importantly, knows his sushi! He served me salmon belly (without me requesting) at no extra charge. I ordered various types of nigiri and was impressed with the quality and freshness of it all. Apparently, he has worked at some west coast sushi spots and is also a trained chef who happens to be helping his family get this restaurant off the ground. I had the chance to talk to him about some of the nigiri, rolls and plates that I have tried in various other cities (i.e. Blue Ribbon Sushi, Katsu Ya, Sushi Samba) and he seemed knowledgable. Since he knew I was familiar with more than just the standard california or crunch rolls, he promised to make items not on the menu if I returned. Oh, the other ladies that work there are equally as friendly and very attentive (maybe bc I was the only person there?). For my first visit, the food and service were enough to deem a return visit. Within a week, I returned with a friend and was wowed! Everyone remembered me and was equally as welcoming to my friend. We sat at the sushi bar and I didn't even have to pick up a pencil to order. Sonny remembered the types of fish that I like (toro, hamachi, sake, etc) and immediately started working. He served us his version of hamachi, jalapeño and ponzu sauce. While this is pretty standard at most sushi spots in LA, it's hard to come by in ABQ so I was stoked! He then created a couple refreshing rolls utilizing soy paper, as he remembered that's my preference. He also served us a baked roll with 3 types of tuna and Parmesan. Pure deliciousness! I failed to ask him what any of these rolls were called bc I was too busy eating! As a finale, he served us Nippon Salmon, which is salmon served over rice, a bit of lemon peel and wasabi, topped with fresh ginger. It had a hint of citrusy sweetness but was so good, it was like a dessert! Needless to say, I was not disappointed and this has become my "go-to" sushi place in Albuquerque! Side note - they also have Teppan tables and serve a few Korean items which Sonny promises are also delicious.

I have frequented this location several times since it has opened. Whether it be by myself, with friends, family or even colleagues, I always receive the same great service and delicious mouth-watering food! I have sat at the teppan, sushi bar, as well as the booths/tables and the service has always been friendly and attentive. Among the many times I have been to Nippon Sushi, I will share some of the visits that stand out to me and should stand out to you as well, as I feel like this is a reflection of just how much the owners (that come to work at the restaurant every single day) value their customers. The very first time I went to the restaurant, I went with a good friend to celebrate a special occasion and to treat her to lunch. We were welcomed in by a woman who sat us at a booth and ended up serving us our drinks and food as well. We chose a couple of different rolls and sushi. We also ordered a couple of appetizers off of the menu. We were brought hot miso soup and salad that had been drizzled with the house dressing (which was delicious!). I immediately became a fan of the dressing. It has such a complex taste, without overpowering the fresh, crisp lettuce. I wish that it was bottled up so I could buy it to use at home! We were soon brought out appetizers from the menu (vegetable tempura, gyoza and edamamme). The appetizers were hot and ready to be devoured. My friend and I were sitting in a booth where we could clearly see our sushi being made by an older asian man and that was also a treat in itself. He very skillfully sliced our fish and plated them on a beautiful plate. After we had stuffed ourselves to the extent that we thought we would have to be rolled out of the restaurant, we were each brought a sliced orange that had some sort of liquid over it. It was the perfect end to such a satisfying meal. I knew that I would be returning to the restaurant. Another visit to the restaurant that stands out to me, is when I went by myself. This time, I chose to sit at the sushi bar. Since I had no company, at least I could get a front row seat in watching my sushi being made. It is truly an art form. The same asian man that had been behind the sushi bar on my first visit was there again. He quickly said hello and started talking with me. I had submitted my sushi order, which consisted of a few different orders of sushi as well as a spicy tuna hand roll. He asked me a few questions on what type of fish I like and started on my order. I watched him slice, dice, wrap and roll my order with such precision and grace, it was actually very mesmerizing. I asked him how long he has been making sushi, when he started telling me a bit about himself and his family's business. I found out that the woman that greeted at the door and served food and drinks was his wife and that he has been making sushi for over forty years! Not only did I receive all of the sushi that I ordered, but he made a special roll he said he was working on and wanted me to try (on the house!). Needless to say, even though I went to eat by myself, I had a wonderful experience and really felt like someone important.. not just another customer. I will share one last experience. My step-dad had a pretty big birthday coming up and wanted to gather some family and friends, but didn't want to have a party at home. I immediately thought of Nippon Sushi and mentioned it to him, stating that they have large seating areas as well as a variety of food (teppan style, sushi, seafood and even steak). My step-dad agreed to have his gathering there to celebrate his birthday. I stopped in to the restaurant a couple of weeks before and was greeted by the owner's wife with the same smile as my previous visits. She recognized me and immediately grabbed a menu and asked me where I would like to be seated. I stated that I was there to actually see if I could reserve a few teppan tables for my step-dad's upcoming birthday and that we would like to celebrate at the restaurant. She confirmed the date with me and said that it would be no problem. We were expecting around 15-20 guests for this party and reserved three teppan tables. When the day arrived, my family and I were seated in the teppan table area and waited for our guests. This was the first time I had sat at the teppan table at this restaurant, and it didn't disappoint! The teppan chef that cooked the food for our whole party was personable, witty and kept the whole group entertained with his chef tricks. Not only did we order teppan, we also requested an array of sushi for our guests that liked sushi (not my step-dad!). The sushi chef said he would take good care of us and prepared two small sushi boats with different selections of sushi. On top of all that, at the end of the dinner, they brought out a fruit tray with a carefully carved whole watermelon that looked like it had a rose in the center. This is definitely my go-to teppan/sushi restaurant in all of Albuquerque!

My son and I gave this place a try for lunch. We were the only people in the restaurant at the time and were offered our choice of seating (regular, sushi bar, or grill). We opted for a booth and confirmed that we could get the all you can eat deal there. The waitress, who was very friendly, brought us the all you can eat sushi menu. As mentioned in earlier reviews, you can only order certain items for all you can eat sushi. I was disappointed to see I could not order a rainbow roll. We ordered and after awhile, an older woman went to the sushi bar and began to work. Although we were the only people there, it did take quite a while to get the sushi to the table. However, it was all well made and tasted good. We did have to wait until we were totally done with the plate before we were able to order more -- which took more time. As I was on a 60 minute lunch break from work, this was frustrating (I ended up being 30 minutes late back to work). On our second round of sushi, the salmon tasted a bit off, which made me nervous about how old the fish may have been. One interesting thing I found was that one of the menus had "Osaka" on them -- which was a sushi/teppanyaki place in Rio Rancho that went out of business. I'm now thinking that they just downsized to the strip mall and came up with a new name. This place was just OK -- I would rather spend the same money and get unlimited choices at Sushi Gen for all you can eat sushi in the Albuquerque area.

I went to Nippon last Thursday on my way to grocery shop at Albertsons. Although, I was the only one in the restaurant (weird), I really enjoyed the meal and chatting with Sonny at the sushi bar. The service was excellent. Very fresh yellowtail sushi, good miso soup, and fantastic spicy, crunchy tuna roll. Nice touches included complimentary salad and decorative chilled, orange. Will, definitely, be back with the BF to check out the teppan table and get another spicy, crunchy tuna roll.

Okay, so I'm not a big Yelper. In fact, I don't "yelp" at all. But this restaurant impressed me so much, I felt inclined to write a review. My boyfriend and I had been driving past this restaurant on our way home from work for the past few months, always promising to stop by "sometime." What really pulled us in was the "All You Can Eat" sign they had hanging. So, we FINALLY made it in this past Tuesday. I won't lie, I was a little nervous because it looked so dark and dim from the outside. They don't have an official sign set up yet, it's just a banner overlapping the old Shanghai Buffet (?) sign. My fears soon disappeared as we entered. We had the kindest waitress and the sushi chef was amazing. Both were very knowledgeable and if we had questions, they'd answer them with ease. They were so nice and I felt comfortable here. The all-you-can-eat deal has to be the best for sushi in ABQ right now. It also includes appetizers, by the way. That is ridiculously awesome. We ordered around 5 rolls, spicy scallop nigiri and a red snapper nigiri. Every roll was fresh, put together well (not ONE fell apart), tastefully decorated with sauces and large portions. Did I mention you can also get anything deep fried for an additional $1? ANYTHING. DEEP. FRIED. I still could have kept going after splitting the rolls with my boyfriend, but I didn't want to eat the entire place out.. Although, I'm fairly confident I could have. This restaurant needs more attention. It needs to be packed and I'll try my hardest to get the word out. How can anyone not love this place? I can honestly say I've tried almost every sushi establishment in Albuquerque and Santa Fe. Along with top-rated sushi restaurants in LA, NYC, Seattle, San Francisco, you name it. We will be returning this week, if it's just as good and consistent, this will be our new favorite sushi place.
