Monte Vista Fire station is 2 bars in one. The upstairs is much like a college bar, with a large covered patio for smokers. The downstairs has a full menu and is calmer then upstairs. The all the staff is attentive and the food is pretty good

Happy hour margarita on the rocks with Gold a very fair price and tasty. Fresh guacamole was one of the best we've ever had. Didn't try any other part of the menu. Bathrooms need serious remodeling, too much like a 20 something trash bar.

I can't speak for the day crowd, but the night scene is ok. Yes, this is where 21-30 year olds hang out. but, I would not label it as a frat boy brawl scene though. Let's face it, who hasn't seen a bar fight in Nob Hill. Check it out Thursday nights during kickball season. There are lots of good people to meet and interact with.

Monte Vista is a cool place. We were there last night for some drinks and snacks, and sat in the downstairs area. It is always dead in there until 8-10pm, which is fairly typical for the area. The waitresses and bartenders are attentive, the drinks are strong, and the food is better-than-average bar food for sure.

Every time I come into Monte Vista, I can't go wrong. I have been here on multiple occasions. I find more often than not that when I hang out in Nob Hill, I find my self here or suggest to friends to come here. On this occasion, I came for a friends Bday. Beer and Gin & Tonics all around. I did eat before and ordered the mountain of onion rings for a friend. The burgers are tasty, the bands are always entertaining and pleases the ears. Upstairs is a great place especially during the summer while you venture out to the patio. The clientele vary and it should be expected in ABQ. Mix it up and order a Purple Drank...

I wasn't going to write a review but since I read Candice's below I must. Yes, Monte Vista is one of the busiest bars in Nob Hill. They have to stick the Fire Code by LAW. That means that they legally can only have a certain amount of people upstairs. Thus leaving a line downstairs and outside. This is the place to be on a Tuesday's, Friday's and Saturday's. It has a nice restaurant downstairs with a bar upstairs and a large patio. Unfortunately, leaving a review on how individuals approach you should in no way be on a review. Speaking of over serving is a bit forward as well. You have 4 immediate bars directly next to and in front of Monte Vista. Please do not accuse of over serving. They have a parking lot in the back and street parking on the side and front. On to the menu! The Green chile mac and cheese is one of the most popular things on the menu. They also have 37 cent chicken wing tuesday's which is also popular. They have a wide variety of alcohol and great staff too. If anyone that is reading this thinks I work at Monte Vista Fire Station, I do not. I am giving my honest opinion.

This is my favorite bar in Albuquerque - service is always great and it's one of my favorite places to eat. Nachos (chicken or beef, both yum as fuck) sub fries for the chips. And then a hundred vodka sodas.

Steak Frits, probably the best steak wifey and I have had in the ABQ area. The truffles rise, bomb as well. Drinks are always on point as well.

While I only walked in and out. I expected a lot more especially being called a fire station. Where was the firemans pole. Boo. It was a Friday and very slow. More dudes then chicas and none of them looked good. It was time for me to leave as this was not my kind of place. Dead.

Sure, the biggest complaint you'll see is that it's crowded, but guess what.. It's a college bar. Vista is a UNM student staple, a Nob Hill Institution, and if you're deterred from the place because of the crowds then so be it. The food is awesome, everything is scratch made in that kitchen and it's 100x better than anything you'll get at the hipster, less crowded (wonder why) establishment across the street. This bar is my Cheers, so maybe I'm bias... But great good is great food, and Monte Vista is better than anything you'll get at Kelly's, or Nob Hill B&G.

I love Monte Vista. It was the place a went to a lot in college and still love to visit. Try the Rum Runner drink, its an old school drink that they have been doing for years. Great Speciality Beer selcetions, mainly seasonal, which is awesome to try something new everytime. Downstairs, they have a great food menu. There is nothing that I haven't enjoyed on the menu. Good crowd and always good service.

UGH. Some of my worst memories in Albuquerque are at this bar. Such a strange place. First of all, the line is always out the door. You already know your experience is about to be hit or miss, and then you have to wait in a huge line. Sometimes the line doesn't even make sense; there have been times where there is an ample amount of room upstairs and downstairs, and they make you wait anyway. Kind of ridiculous. Most times, the bar is absolutely packed and there's nowhere to sit. Once, I was here and there was a table for us, yay! So we sit down and try to enjoy our drinks. That was ruined by this guy who is seriously projectile vomiting everywhere. It was the beginning of the night, and some guy is just standing in the middle of the covered porch area throwing up. Not only does that mean that he was over-served, it also means that NO ONE CARES that he is doing this. It felt like an eternity that he was standing there throwing up, so we try to get the attention of waitresses and bartenders. Waitresses, up until this point, have seriously been looking at him, walking around him, and walking away. I tell a bartender, and he says he'll get someone, but really doesn't. We eventually just left. I don't know if they kicked the dude out or not, but we weren't going to stay to find out. My friend's purse was ruined because we were sitting so close to this grossness. Another time, I'm at the bar trying to order a drink and this guy comes up to me and is like, "You have an amazing jawline. That guy over there told me that I had to hug the hot girl. Will you hug me?" Bizarre. He wouldn't leave me alone and sort of forced me into hugging him. I guess the bouncers are too busy herding people into a line to actually care about patrons being harassed. I probably won't be in the area again anytime soon, but I'd make my best effort to steer my friends clear of this bar if I was!

My friends and I visit Monte Vista at least once a week. Usually on weekends and during the evenings. We always have a great time. Monte Vista is a two story bar and they have food! Great place to lounge around with a drink in hand and catch up with friends. Their menu has a variety of eats. Everything I have had thus far has been great. Their chips and queso and their nachos are perfect for sharing with friends over a brew. They have 2 full bars and beer on tap, including local. Seat upstairs and down stairs, but it is limited. The staff is friendly and very efficient. Great place to relax and hang out.

This was my first visit and I'll definitely be back! I came with my mom to celebrate her birthday. I ordered the Monte Vista burger and upgraded my fries to "truffle." I highly recommend this! Drizzled with black truffle oil and sprinkled with parmesan cheese, parsley, and kosher salt, these fries were little sticks of crispy fried potato heaven! My mom had the chicken skewers and said they were great. They looked good but I didn't have a taste. I might have them next time! There are a couple local beers on tap, like Marble Brewery's Red Ale. Service was good. Our waitress was attentive and kept water glasses full. It was pretty busy for a Thursday night. There was a jazz jam/open mike going on, which was the main reason we were there. Great food, great music, and a fantastic way to spend my mom's birthday!

This place has a fantastic kitchen! The food is really good, I love to invite as many friends of mine to Thursday night rib night. It's a ton of food for about $10! However, the management of this establishment clearly doesn't care about their reputation. I took a group of about 6 there last week. The two of us who got there early got our food and drinks quickly. However, after the remaining 4 members arrived, we didn't get service for over 30 minuets! We asked the bus boy, made eye contact with the waitstaff, nothing! Thirty minutes later we all walked out, plus the 4 extra people who were going to join us (10ish people total ordering food and alcohol). We instead went to Two Fools which was PACKED and somehow we got served as soon as we arrived. Shame on you whoever owns/manages Monte Vista! For such a fantastic kitchen, it's a shame how poor the service is...

I hate to leave this type of review but here goes: So I guess this place has its niche. It always seems packed and rowdy, except for the night our party wanted to eat there. When they flat out told us they wouldn't make a table for seven. Maybe they were expecting some kind of rush soon, I don't know. It's not like it was peak dinner time. In fact we were able to walk right in next door at Two Fool's and seat all seven of us and have a wonderful dinner. Thanks, Monte Vista.

I came by here for a couple drinks because the Zinc Cellar Bar was closed. I thought the ambiance was decent. The waitress was really sweet. I might not sit outside again in the future, due to the roaches that just live outside. Prices were fair and the appetizers were very yummy!

I go here to have a beer with co workers. You will not find me here on- Tuesdays, Fridays or Saturdays, this is when the smelly, fratty, and gussied up College crowd proliferates. I do not think I would have felt like it was my scene even in my College days. On the more mellow days it is a nice place to have a drink and chill. They have a full bar and the bartenders make a good cocktail. The staff here is cool and unpretentious. The food is alright, pub grub, nothing too fancy. Locals I have talked to, have said regarding this; that the food used to be much better, and that is was more of a restaurant five years ago. Now it is trying to gear itself more as a student drinking destination. I do believe their agenda has worked. I have had the chicken fingers, and gone for wing night. The wings are really tiny on wing night (Tuesdays), and kind of soggy. I do not think they fry them to order, which is wrong in my book. They cook them all at the beginning of shift and reheat them. My boyfriend commented, are these pigeon wings? I do not know of anywhere else I can put back 20 wings. I can't even eat 10 of Geckos. They also make you show your ID to eat them, because of the Vodka sauce. Don't you usually cook all the booze out of a sauce. I have never had anywhere also require an id for a sauce?

The waitresses here will steal your money any chance they get. I gave $40 dollars for a $21 dollar bill. My waitress gave me back 6 dollars. I had to hunt her down to get the rest back. I'd describe her, but all the girls who work there look the same. The drinks were decent.

This place was a dud for me unfortunately... =/ We came here on a Saturday and it was extremely packed upstairs and downstairs. We went upstairs to sit down and there was 1 or 2 waitresses walking around, which apparently never even came to our table to ask us what we needed. After about 20 minutes we had to flag her down to order our drinks. That was basically the only time we even saw her throughout the night. Now I can't really rate the food because we only came here for drinks. I ordered a cranberry vodka, which apparently they held back the vodka because my drink was beyond red. The atmosphere was ok, it was just really packed and loud, and it would've been nice if they played music on the patio too but there wasn't any. The outdoor patio on the roof was the only thing that I really liked about this place. Other then that, I wouldn't come back unless you want a cranberry juice and bad service. Very disappointing.

This place is awesome!! Ask for Molly she is attentive and personable. Molly made our entire experience in New Mexico so warm and friendly. I had the roughest day of my life and I just thought I'd stop by for some quick wings, but six hours later... Molly was still PHENOMENAL! We weren't completely happy with our drinks and she was quick to make them to our likening. That is what serving is about, making sure every need is met. MOLLY IS AWESOME!!!

When I come into town once a year I end up at Monte to reunite with friends, at least once. On certain nights it ends up being a high school reunion, which can be entertaining. As far as the service: I've had a few different experiences, but overall the drinks are crap, don't expect much and order simple. Some of the bartenders are nice though. The bar and bouncers always want to create a line out the door, apparently bars in Albuquerque think this is cool, well it isn't and it is dumb no where in San Francisco does a bar make people stand in a line unless it is a club and a busy night. Now, I understand the whole upstairs can't have too many people thing, but there have been times were there was barely anyone in the place and they make people wait in a line outside as well as going upstairs. STUPID. It isn't cool to make people wait in a line to appear busy. So that is something that would dramatically help improve the services. Haven't eaten here so can't review that, maybe next time.

Nice bar right in the middle of all the others. Has two stories. Downstairs Hasidic and upstairs has an outdoor smoking area covered patio. The service was pretty good considering a busy Friday night. Drinks are about $5/ each.

I frequented this place as a a young early twenty-something college student, but it's just not the same when your not looking for a shot--or four! I came here with some girlfriends this past weekend and had some Moscow Mules. Cheers to the server for knowing what they were--I can't say the same for the other bars we went to that night! We split the chili cheese fries and were happy. Maybe a good place for one drink and some apps but the atmosphere is most definitely for a younger, college crowd.

  • Howie K.

I haven't returned since the night my party and I sat in the smoking section--the "outdoor" patio--because the place was so packed. I don't know, maybe they've since outlawed smoking, but it was like going back in a time machine... to my college days, when I smoked, too. Regardless of the air, we didn't enjoy the experience. We waited a long time for service, and when she arrived it was obvious she was a) overworked and b) under-tipped. Yes, 'tis the plight of all wait staff, but now that I've read some of the other reviews I have to say: management, listen up! Yelp! Yelp! Yelp! My recollection of the Fire Station back in the day is completely different. This was a great spot to meet up with friends, just walking distance from "the student ghetto" where we would grab a couple big tables, order some great appetizers and get to work on projects, assignments or just relax and laugh. The vibe has totally turned... dare I agree again... solidly frat.

This place is always so busy on the weekends... It not even with going to unless you don't mind waiting for a drink for an hour and having no place to sit.

I think my review deserves an update. The downstairs of Monte Vista is decent. The food is not bad and the drinks are usually good. The service is hit or miss. l really like that they have live music. However, the upstairs is pretty much abysmal. It is dark and dingy and the seating appears like it is from the 70's or 80's. It smells when you go upstairs. It smells old and unsanitary. On my most recent visit, I noticed that there was dust everywhere and there were either food or vomit splatters on a pretty big portion of the wall behind our booth. There were flies in the bathroom and no toilet paper in either stall. I don't think I'll be returning to the upstairs portion. Really, the only reason I go to Monte Vista occasionally is because some of my friends like to go there. I know this place makes a good amount of money. If you go there on a Tuesday night or over the weekend, it is PACKED. There is often a line out the door. I think this place needs to put some money back into doing a bit of cleaning (first and foremost) and remodeling. It reminds me of one of those places that should be on the reality show "Bar Rescue" where they come in and revamp the place. Monte Vista could really use a good scrub down and some modern upgrades.

Monte Vista is nothing special, but it can be a lot a fun on the right evening. Being just blocks from the UNM campus, they cater to a young and lively crowd, so you never really know what to expect. There are two bars within (one upstairs, one down), the upstairs being somewhat of a hotspot on Friday and Saturday nights (there's typically a line to get up), and the downstairs being host to live music some nights and offering a full pub-style menu. All in all, Monte Vista is your typical busy Nob Hill bar. It's just a little bit on the divey side, and the wait-staff kind of treat you like you're drunk, whether you are or not. I mean, if you order a specific mixed drink and they don't have the mixer you request, the bartender will just substitute without asking. Yes, I can tell the difference between sprite and tonic. Typically it's a hit or a miss.

I just had a night out with a friend there. We were sitting downstairs outside enjoying the beers (they have somewhat ok selection but a lil pricey). The party got started upstairs and they had a lot of people (apparently there) as there was an implicit line downstairs (no signs anywhere that you have to wait to get there). The doorman was nowhere around there stairs so we just walked up and got stopped in the middle of the stairs by the dude claiming that we didn't wait in line (which there was really none that we could recognice) and he was very rude to tell us that we jumped the line. Hey if no one can figure out that there is a line, make a sign or something that people can understand there is one (I don't mind waiting if I know I have to but I get irritated to be claimed to jump the line when there is none that you can see). If that is the case, then just be polite to your customers and make them aware like normal people do: "excuse me sir, there is a line [point the line] you need to wait to get in" rather than treat one like a criminal an accusing to jump the line. Very disappointed, I will avoid this place, even though the food and beer is ok but being treated like a thug just turns off.

Pass on this place!! Walked into this dump and was "greeted" by Lurch from the Adams Family making some sort of a gesture with his thumb and forefinger ( obviously took a lot training) that come to find out - after he spoke- was to symbolize an ID. "You got an ID?" I said yes but I'm 56 years old! "Ya gotta have an ID cause dis is also a bar". I said really Lurch!?! F'U dude!! Does not rate a single star!!!

First off if you're over 21 and not really into blacking out on rum runners, puking from chicken wings and accidentally waking up with a frat guy/sorority girl this isn't the place for you. But if for some reason you get stuck in this sweaty dump of a bar because it's say your friend's birthday and that's where she wanted to go (why? no idea) DO NOT USE A CREDIT CARD TO PAY. The waitresses are real rocket scientists and will likely overcharge your credit card, not by a couple bucks but by $40 bucks. Apparently the 6 is next to the 2 on the computer screen WHOOPSIES. But mistakes happen, no big deal right? They're an established business so they should refund you no problem. NOT. THE. CASE. You call during daylight (4 p.m.) when one would assume there was a manager on duty and find out that no, there is no manager until 9:30 p.m. so call back then. Now no one in their right mind wants to call a BAR at 9:30 at night because obviously it will be busy catering to Ed Hardy clad douche bags and french tipped manicured hussies - but that's the only time there's a manager on duty. So you call back at 9:30 and talk to a really superb guy named Justin, oh I can see his frosted tipped fohawk now, you explain your situation to this alleged "manager" and he tells you that since the charge cleared. It's your problem now and there's nothing they (the ones who overcharged you) can do. So moral of the story, DON'T GO THERE EVER BECAUSE IT IS ABOUT AS FUN AS HAVING SOMEONE CRAP ON YOUR FACE. And if you do. DO NOT USE CREDIT CARD.

Came in last night with some friends for the $.22 buffalo wings along with some other munchies. We opted for some wings, guacamole, and the bacon wrapped jalapenos. The wings were a bit puny, but what can you expect for 22 cents. The bacon wrapped jalapenos were pretty good, but $6 for 4 jalapenos is a little unsettling. On top of that, we were sitting right by the kitchen and there's nothing like watching your food get cold in the window for 10 minutes before they bring it out. At that point, just bring the appetizers out piecemeal and tell us you didnt want the food to get cold waiting on the made to order guac. As for the guac, that seemed to be the only thing on the table that we really couldnt get enough of. For 8 bucks, its a generous serving and was wonderful! Overall, for 3 drinks and 3 appetizers, we ended up paying $29 before tip. Not bad, but considering the only thing we were really happy with on the table was the guac, Maybe next time it'll be the only thing we order. As far as the bar goes, it's my favorite bar in town. There are almost always a big assortment of people there and the bartenders are quick. So the food isn't all that great, but I still give them 5 stars.

I didn't have anything on the food menu, but ordered a Dirty Martini w/sapphire gin. The drink was good, I'll admit, but the service was really REALLY SLOW. It was a friday night so I'll take that into consideration. There was supposed to be a band, but they were really late in setting up. Sitting out on the patio was nice, people watching. I looked at other dishes that customers ordered at the next table, didn't look like anything extraordinary. Maybe I'll go back and order some food, but overall, the place didn't leave a lasting impression on me.

  • Dan R.

Indeed the Monte Vista is a frat house full of over served belligerent kids who are apt to start a brawl for no apparent reason. I was enjoying a couple cocktails listening to the band when I paid my bill I bumped into one of the aforementioned frat kids said excuse me; he then proceeded to punch me and tackle me to the ground in front of the bartenders. It took several minutes before a security member pulled him off me while he was trying to choke me out. In the process of pulling him off me they ruined my new nice expensive wool jacket. This is not the first time an incident like this has happened there I heard a bartender got his face smashed in for cutting off one of these frat kids. And a bartender at Buffalo Wild Wings told me he had his eyebrow bit off at the Monte Vista by one of the over served patrons there. Moral of the story nice staff, nice owners good music good food; but, not worth the risk or trouble until they do something about the safety of their patrons. They need better trained security and more of them if the bar is going to turn into a frat house at night. Avoid this place if your not into the over testosteroned frat boy looking for a fight scene.

I was SO surprised to read less than stellar reviews for the Firestation. I've been going here for years. I think the night crowd has probably changed since I used to partake in the college week day meet-ups, so I can't speak to the night scene any longer. This review is a before 10pm review. The food here is really good. I enjoy the New Mexican fusion and the fresh ingredients. The green chile mac is the BEST I've had, the chicken sandwich is really good (bacon and avo, yes please!), and ribs are tasty with that red chile BBQ sauce! Yummy! Oh, and I think they're well known for their wings, which are also good. They're spicy, just like I like them! They typically have a local beer special and good craft brews on draft. Free chips and salsa upstairs which is nice when you're going for a drink and watching a game. (I think they have the NFL ticket) The service has always been good while I was there and the people nice. I like having the option to sit outside either upstairs and downstairs and this building is so architecturally interesting. Sure the bathrooms are small, but this place was built in the 30's. Its got a lot of character.

Random crowd when I came by for dinner. Crochety old timers at the bar, you seat yourself. Chicken fajitas were delicious. My friend's steak frites were a bit on the grisly/fatty side, though. :( UPSIDE: Drinks are cheap!

The Monte Vista was a regular hang-out with my fellow grad students--usually drinks on Friday evening. One night we decided to eat there... I ordered a hamburger, which was good. I asked for mayonnaise--not an unusual request, however, when the bill came there was an extra $0.50 on the tab. The waitress had not mentioned an extra charge on the $9 burger, and I've not been back since. Because it was my birthday, and everyone was in a celebratory mood, I didn't want to raise a ruckus, but when I called the next day, no one seemed to even know the name of the manager for whom I could leave a message. Other bars and restaurants in the Nob Hill neighborhood do not tack on an extra charge for mayo (I know because I called around and asked) and I've eaten burgers from California to New York and NEVER been charged extra for mayo.

  • Lucas L.

First of all the line is outrageous on Tuesdays. The line isn't there because it is packed inside. It is there just so they can make it look busy. They allow all women upstairs and guys who slip an extra 10 to 20 per person. This place is a huge frat house and there seem to be a lot of yougins here. I advise everyone to head towards Nob Hill Bar and Grill, Tractor or Two Fools Tavern. It is also impossible to get a drink here, especially upstairs. I once waited about 30 minutes at the bar just to get a beer. The waitress service has also been some of the worst I have seen. Twice I have been here with slow, inattentive servers with terrible attitudes. I don't know if I can really blame them because they seem a little over worked. This place needs some reform before I give it another chance.

This place was ok. The bathroom was gross (really, ladies? If you can drink, you should be able to hit the toilet). The outdoor patio seemed cool, but we sat inside. It was not crowded and seemed pretty dead.

Like another recent poster, I am also surprised to read bad reviews about Monte Vista. And I just read great reviews for Kelly's brewery. Is something wrong with me?! Anyways, I came here on a Sunday afternoon after a riveting kickball game so this may not be representative of a normal nighttime experience. I love the way the booths are setup..very unique. Allows for viewing of the numerous televisions (I couldn't even decide which one to watch) as well as easily speak with any member of your group comfortably. The booths themselves are also quite comfy. The waitress/bartender was outstanding, literally one of my favorites in life, ever. She was cute, very attentive but not overbearing, quick, easy to talk to, etc...I got the breakfast burrito which was only $4. It was pretty dang good. I forget what was in it now, but typical stuff: eggs, cheese, bacon I think, green chile, potatoes. I highly recommend this place at least for a Sunday afternoon at least, and I would definitely return for any occasion, except for the fact I do not live in ABQ :(

Ahhhhhmazing Green Chile Mac and Cheese...but better get in and out before the aforementioned drunkenness and fighting starts (mentioned by other Yelpers). I'm not sure if they over serve there...but there are plenty of nut job people hanging out who have been over served somewhere and then ended up @ Monte Vista! Seriously...people be crazy.

I visited Monte Vista on a weekday night and sat at the bar, which was nearly empty. For fifteen minutes, I sat there without receiving any service. Not even a word. I walked out. Reading other similar reviews, this appears to be their business model.
