Big portions of good food. Pricey, but when your order comes up you can kind of see why. The smart scramble was probably the best tofu scramble I've had, though tofu was only a bit part in the dish (maybe that's for the best). I asked the rest of my party how their food was - two chicken caesar salads, a ranch breakfast, blueberry pancakes, and the club sandwich. One dude even went back for apple pie. The consensus was that it was indeed a bit expensive, but averaged a bit above 3.5 stars. Ranch breakfast brought things down. The space was impressive. Wide open, lots of art and bright colors, plenty of seating, huge windows, a nice outdoor patio (that was too hot to use). Impressive dessert/pastry display. Good coffee. Would eat here again, though be advised it's a bit above the typical touring band budget.

Beautiful facility Mediocre food OK service Terrible system Long wait to order & restaurant was empty Did NOT enjoy carrying my tray & serving myself. Better customer service at McDonalds
(2)John D.
Two times and I would only say they hit the ball, but it stayed in field. No wait service. Kinda pricey. A little noisy. That Nob Hill edge that just gets under my skin sometimes. But my real critique--there's better food for much better prices with a wait staff eager to provide excellent service all over this city. The desserts that sound great taste store-bought. Eat there if you must, but look for my reviews on the gems in town. NOTE: Please read the management's comments to me which I really appreciate. I will give the Flying Star Cafe a third try and update my review. --John 6/23

If you haven't been to one of the many Flying Star locations, then I don't know what rock you've been living under. They have the best baked goods in town and some of the best comfort food outside of my kitchen. On a trip this past weekend, a friend and I each ordered a yummy pastry, she had a fruit tart and I had the pineapple cakelette. We got our desserts first because you should always start with dessert. What if you get through your meal and realize there is no room for dessert? That would be sad! After we demolished our pastries, we shared an order of queso fries. The name is pretty self-explanatory, crispy fries smothered in spicy queso and a little shredded cheese on top. They were fabulous!
(5)Sara B.
Getting drink refills is a bit confusing, because you order up front there isn't anyone waiting on you. Other than that.. Amazing food! Everything we ordered was delicious, the French Toast is out of this world, Definetly a must try!

Solid, slightly-upscale diner food in the land of enchantment. My sister recommended it, based on my craving for a green chile cheeseburger. Setting and décor: very clean, modern; easy on the eyes. Free wi-fi was a nice plus. I saw several patrons surfing or doing their work here. I can think of worse places. Food: Flying star is also a bakery, so the baked goods here are fresh, with a good variety. My green chile burger (called The New Mexico Burger) had green chiles baked into the bread, as well as on top of the meat. Excellent! Price was a bit steep for this area though ($13). Service was friendly and efficient. Zero complaints there. Later I ran into a few ABQ locals who had a negative view of this small, growing chain. Their complaints all seemed to be centered around the prices. (Maybe it's because I live in California, but they didn't seem that extreme to me.) When I asked them if they could recommend a better, local place than Flying Star, these same locals couldn't think of a good alternative (besides The Frontier, which is certainly cheaper, but definitely NOT better food!). ( yelp.com/biz/frontier-al… ) Funny how that old saying just keeps turning up: You get what you pay for

Flying Star is a good local stand by for us. We enjoy the fact they source a lot of their food locally, they have good healthy items and comfort food items as well. Some favorites of mine are the tossed Cobb, delicious!!! The blueberry pancakes, DIVINE! Their desserts are fresh and decadent. The make a wonderful chicken salad sandwich and their red stuff drink beverage is SUPER TASTY. Sometimes service can be slow, and the dessert prices are a bit pricy but all in all it is on our frequented restaurant list.
(4)Tony M.
Prices have gone up and so it's not as fun to go as it used to be. The dessert selection is still awesome other food has smaller portions
(3)Rand R.
I really like this Flying Star location. Super friendly staff provide great service. The real standouts for me, however are the patios. There are two: one regular and one where pets are allowed. We love to take our dog and appreciate their welcome!

Friday morning we did the 9-mile overnight sunrise hike from Nambe to Chimayo from 2:30 am to 6:30 am. Saturday morning we got up from a sleep from the dead, hungry and recovering-tired. Decided we would treat ourselves to flapjacks at Flying Star Juan Tabo. With a cup of their steaming black, magic brew and flapjacks we got to reminiscing about the 14 years we'd been eating here since moving to "The Q" from the east coast. The reminiscing was about the decor and ambience - how it was so inviting for sitting and eating and having friend-conversations. The cool mosaic columns. The huge bakery wall mural. The faux coud ceiling. The big Tiffany ceiling-lamp shade. The "perfect for spring-summer-fall" outdoor patio. Just a heck of a comfortable, friendly place to hang out. The flapjacks and black coffee were the perfect reward-treat for our Camino de Chimayo nocturnal efforts! The only reason for four rather than five stars is ... Flying Star has become a bit pricey. But this morning it was perfectly worth it.

Flying Star used to be my go-to place to meet friends but in the last few years, the prices have gotten higher, the menu has changed, and the serving portions have shrunken. I used to love their Maximum Fudge Density cake but that was discontinued years ago. More recently, they no longer have their Coconut Cream Pie. The last good meal I ate there was the cobb salad with chicken. It was fresh, tasty and served with an ample amount of chicken. They are trendy, and a little too much so. The menu has changed to include more vegan options and arugula is prevalent now as well. Great if you're a fan of the leafy green, but I'm not. I've also heard rumors that they donate to PETA which is a slap in the face to the local farmers and ranchers they source their ingredients from... but that's a rumor yet to be confirmed.
(3)Leah R.
Though I enjoy the atmosphere, I can no longer justifying paying their inflated prices. Flying star thinks little too much of themselves in my opinion.
(2)Thomas M.
Cheerful atmosphere, open layout with large windows, very good food (I had the fish dish). Brought Boris, my 6 month old pooch, and we sat outside on the patio. The wait staff was a bit harried Sat noon, but managed. I will go back.
(4)Faith S.
I previously worked for flying star so I understand the demands and nature of the work entailed. I do not understand however, how and why I received undercooked rice in my meal and when brought to someone's attention, why they didn't seem concerned. I get it, it has been a long day and customers suck. I'm not super picky, I just ask that I get what I paid.

Food came cold on the southwest breakfast, and the lettuce and tomatoes on my burger should have been thrown in the trash two hours before I got them. Very disappointed in seeing one of Albuquerque's bright spots dishing out cold and bad food. We're are the heart and soul of flying star? Not in the food or service at this location.
(1)Pat E.
This place is very similar to the NORTH STAR CAFE in Columbus, Ohio, but with a southwestern flavor. It is a trendy place and promotes its "organic" and fresh options. Yes, the food is good, service is friendly and the place looks good. However, like most of the reviews indicate, does this justify its high prices?? I would have given the place 4 stars if the prices were lower. I think there are other options in ABQ where you can pay less money for the same or better quality of food. TRENDY FOR SURE
(3)Merrick B.
I've been coming to Flying Star since it first opened as Double Rainbow. Was a regular at EJ's before that. FS has been going down hill a while now. No croisants any more. Today I tried to order a very complex hot drink. Black tea. Not flavored, just black tea. Apparently not a thing here anymore. Pretty much every single change made in the last X years to this place has been negative. This particular location, closest to my house, runs out of things constantly, can't trust any dinner order not to be 86ed after I'm seated, and they no longer mark the menu board ahead of time---because apparently that practice they used to do was too sensible. Baseline food is still fine, but its not the go-to place it used to be.
(2)Chris S.
A bit pricey but I haven't ordered anything and not liked it. The food is good and fresh, and the staff is friendly, helpful, and attentive
(5)Sara B.
Prices seem to have gone up every year while quality and portion size has gone down. Spending 50$ for breakfast for 3 people is ridiculous. What once used to be a place that I would frequent multiple times per week, is now a place I go to once every 3 months. After I have a meal there, I remember why I stopped going.
(3)Bob C.
Finding a place to park is always tough but if you can the food is always great . The. Huevos rancheros with green chile is the best!
(5)Annie J.
Flying Star is good for many different dishes, though the pricing is higher than many of us feel is justified. Yet their food is decent, and a fallback place. Many of their locations are great to work in or just hang out, because they are fun and bright. I've come here many times, mainly this location for breakfast, and have tried at many of their locations, and the same is always true about what is described below for their Morning Sundae, aka granola fruit yogurt bowl. Their Morning Sundae is $7.59. It's a meager serving in an easy-to-access shallow parfait glass, quite a bit less than what you get at many other restaurants listed here, including The Grove, The Range, Cafe Lush, Nosh and Gold Street Caffé. They do use organic vanilla yogurt, fresh fruit, honey, dried fruit and walnuts. The added honey makes the concoction much sweeter than any of the other granola-yogurt-fruit dishes served elsewhere locally. So I usually ask to have it left off. The granola, itself, is a disappointment, especially since it's house-made. What it seems to be is really just baked oats covered in cinnamon and honey. The Morning Sundae is quite expensive for what you get. Perhaps the Morning Sundae is made the way it is so as to accommodate those customers wishing to modify it to make it healthier or to make it easy for the cooks to remove different allergens, like the walnuts. But no matter which Flying Star one goes to and asks for what seems a simple modification, like leaving off the added honey, it's such an ordeal, and many times doesn't arrive as requested. Not only is the honey gone, but so are the walnuts or something else. This granola, yogurt, fruit combination might as well be competing with what Einstein's and Panera Bread have to offer.

So my wife took me to flying cafe. She said they have really good food. I try the California Dreaming which was actually pretty good. It had avocado, tomato, and basil and red onion marmalade. Is a pretty good size sandwich so I only ate half and took the rest home. Plus it comes with french fries. Im a huge dessert guy so you have to check out there display. I don't think you can go wrong with all the choices they offer.
(4)Teresa T.
This place never ceases to amaze me. Their authentic New Mexican cuisine mixed with fine cuisine that you would see at $40 a plate restaurants combine to make fantastic food! Their pies and dessert are among the best I've ever tasted. I crave their fruit tarts on a weekly basis, but as I don't live in Albuquerque anymore I no longer can acquire on a weekly basis. My bank account appreciates me though as a meal here can get pretty pricey quickly with the side of deliciousness here and a slice of sweet awesomeness there, etc.
(4)Rob C.
$64.20 for one cake... Bought a cake for the fathers day celebration today. I must admit that the cake was amazing but the price seems outrageous. I was running late and had promised to bring dessert. Don't see why I would ever pay that much again. I cant say that I buy many cakes but I will think twice before ever going to flying star again for dessert. Wonder if they charge that much every day or if I got gauged somehow....$65 bucks!!
(2)Aaron M.
Horrible.....spent 30$ on huevos rancheros and an omelette. The eggs on the huevos were not cooked so I took them back and they just put them under the salamander so everything on the plate was burned and the eggs were still under cooked. My girlfriends omelette was over cooked horribly, we would have sent it back but by this point we just wanted to leave. Spend your money elsewhere. It got one star because they didn't screw up the coffee.
(1)Frank W.
I agree with other reviewer's that flying star is trendy, and often busy. Unfortunately as others have stated they seem to continually raise their prices. A burger fries and a Coke should not cost $18. The pies are delicious, but two slices of pie and 2 cups of coffee for over $20 is ridiculous!!
(2)Lisa H.
Enjoyed a nice gathering at Flying Star to celebrate a friend's soon to arrive baby. This was a great way to celebrate- girls hanging out at night over dessert. I knew it would be difficult to choose only one dessert for my treat, with so many good looking choices. They had a spread of half-priced choices, I'm assuming because it was end of the day. I chose the dark chocolate cupcake filled with cream. It was quite delicious. The best part of the night was the company and the part where we all got to leave with a free slice of cake for the road.
(4)Jane V.
Once I finally could turn left into their parking lot things were good. I got a parking spot close to the door. It was very busy but everything was running smoothly. I had the blt with avocado. I thought the sandwich looked really small at first, it was very filling and delicious. I wasn't given any grief when I had to nurse our daughter there. They also had a changing table in the bathroom - a new must for us!
(4)Amy B.
I'm a sucker for Flying Star. I love everything I have ever tried there, but my favorite is the Californian sandwich; it's full of melty cheese, grilled veggies, fresh avocado, in between buttery toasted sourdough. YUMM!! The desserts are tasty, but very pricey. However, today I saw that they had their delicious chocolate raspberry cake for half-off per slice. I took it as a sign from the delicious dessert gods, so I didn't want to disappoint them. This location is always packed, but I think that's true for all of their locations.
(4)Lacey S.
Fish Tacos were fabulous, atmosphere was pleasant but, $3.99 for a lemonade? Wow. Soured the deal for me. Lunch for two: Fish Tacos (2) $9.99 Lemonade (2) $3.99 Lunch @ $29
(2)Cath M.
This was just a block from the BFF's place and next time out... we'll be going here every day for breakfast! We came in on a Friday morning... the place was already busy and the ambiance was just full of energy! You walk inside... the menu is there... you pick what you want and you order up front... done! They bring you the food to your table and the other upside... they continuously check on you if you need anything else... I wished Crepevine did that more often. I ordered the following: - grande soy mocha = delicious! the way they prep it was much better than getting it from Satellite even though they use the same coffee... must be the barista! - Morning Sundae (Organic vanilla yogurt, fresh & dried fruits, walnuts, homemade granola & honey) = probably the best granola and yogurt I've had... ever! The honey definitely takes it to another level and the it was just the right amount of granola, yogurt and dried fruits and fruits. Delicious and am looking forward to ordering it next time out. - bagels with cream cheese = freshly baked and you can taste it... the cream cheese tasted like and creamy. Overall... I'm a fan and just glad that the BFF shared us her "spot" in ABQ. Definitely a simple place to get your food on... friendly folks as well!

It has been many years since I have eaten here. The food is ordinary, and I have never experienced anything spectacular here. But i had to go where others wanted to go today. Being uninspired by the menu options, I opted for a blueberry scone and coffee. Since this place has a reputation for baked goods, I was surprised how hard this scone was. I'm used to scones that are soft and flaky. I sample some of what others ordered. I did not like the fish tacos. I had a bite of one of my granddaughter's fish, and that was at least acceptable. It is a popular place, and all those people bounce sound off the hard surfaces, leading to an environment where it is difficult to carry on a conversation.
(2)Cee T.
I seriously don't know what the fascination with this place is. We have been here 3-4 times and it's always a let down. You do not get what you pay for here.
(2)Yashar I.
Relocated to the area recently and have been searching for my go to cafe to get some side work completed during evenings. To cut to the chase, I cannot believe this chain is as popular as it is. This is one of the most blatantly overpriced places I've ever seen! $2.75 for a small mug of coffee? Are you kidding me? Back in the Midwest that would run you around $1 in a larger mug. The dessert prices are more expensive than the most expensive co-op store I can conjure. $12 for a turkey sandwich and fries? Child please. You won't find prices like these elsewhere unless you're in Manhattan. To their credit, I will say the food ranges from good to great and the ambiance is very pleasant on the eyes. But how this place is so popular is beyond me. The sad thing is every now and then I come here since other coffee shops do not stay open as late. If everything cost around 60-70% of current prices I would happily frequent this place.
(1)Alan N.
Honestly, if Flying Star weren't so convenient to my grandmother's home, I'd probably skip it. The coffee-shop atmosphere is nice, service is friendly, and the food is always good--but not good enough or plentiful enough to justify the prices. Maybe if you're the type who refuses to eat anything lacking a USDA Organic certification (and there are plenty like that in Albuquerque) the prices aren't surprising, but for me they're 10% to 15% too high, consistently.
(3)Rox R.
This place has a fun atmosphere. You can read, eat, buy a magazine. The most memorable part of this place was the mac n cheese. It was absolutely delicious! But, I missed out on the best part- the broccoli. My boyfriend was smart enough to get both, and I was blown away. If I could make broccoli taste like this, I would eat it everyday (don't quote me on that- I still like carrots). Definite place to return to since I don't live here.
(4)Steve N.
I want to marry Flying Star. I could eat three meals per day here, plus dessert, and never have a bad or dull meal. The prices are reasonable and the setting is awesome. We spent $32.48 for two. We had a salad and a fish special. The service, which is order at the counter, take a number, find a table, is excellent for that paradigm. BTW - I like the Rio Grande location, too.
(5)Keith R.
Have again: the Thai steak salad with noodles and peanut sauce was good. Not have again: the patty melt had very little avocado and just did not do well as take-out.
(3)Damacio U.
Coffee is expensive but bottomless unlike the S coffee place. Service is great as always. Would love to be able to eat all the pastries but don't want to weigh 300 pounds.
(3)Shannon C.
Dined here for breakfast while visiting friends in New Mexico. The place was pretty much empty since it was the day after Christmas, which gave us almost the entire place to ourselves. I had the Fiesta Morning sandwich which was really good, except for the scrambled preparation. I was expecting a fried egg with the toppings stacked on there, but they were scrambled with the eggs and then put onto the sandwich. I generally avoid scrambled eggs (it's a texture thing), but I was still able to enjoy the sandwich never the less. Love the limitless Satellite coffee, which you can refill yourself as fast as you can knock it back.
(3)Nessie V.
Not much vegan anymore. Basically pasta with red sauce or a hummous plate. How the mighty have fallen.
(2)Megan R.
I come here almost every day of the work week since it's so close to my school. It's a tad expensive but I think it's completely worth it. There is a bar inside for people who just want to work on their computer and eat. They buy local as much as possible and have a variety of meals and pastries for every type of diet. The staff are always so friendly, patient, and helpful. There is a beautiful garden patio in front for the summer. The food is always delicious.
(5)Ken F.
I'm really torn about this review. When I first arrived in Albuquerque this was my favorite place. The Flying Star is a great place for some things but definitely overpriced for what you are getting especially in ABQ. This location is fairly large with large indoor and outdoor seating areas. The place can get quite busy but the service is always quick. You order at the counter and they bring the food to your table. You can get self-service refills on coffee and hot water. The good parts first. Flying star is an awesome place for hanging out with a large group and for studying or reading. They have free Wifi and plenty of places to sit. The desserts are also very good and maybe worth the price. The cakes seem to be a better deal than the pies because the serving size is much larger. Now the bad part. The prices is the biggest thing. Just way too high for what you are getting. I also find that none of the dishes is particular special. You can get better New Mexican/Southwest food at other places for half the price. Their Asian food isn't particular special and the salads are ridiculously priced and again not that special. I wouldn't aim to go to Flying Star Cafe just for the food, mainly because it is overpriced.. But if you are going with a large group, want dessert, or plan on hanging for awhile, its a great place.
(3)Mekeek M.
Very good freshly made salads, sandwiches, burgers, etc. but they're real claim to fame is they're desserts. Homemade pies, cakes and a wide assortment of bakery items. All on display as you wait in line with a panera style order and sit down to be served type place.
(4)Samantha E.
A rely fun and relaxed atmosphere. All the food was delicious and I was tempted by everything in the bakery. My friend often came by to study since she lived close by.
(4)Em H.
Ahhh.....Flying Star. I've been a loyal patron for years now. There have been periods during which I would have given 10 stars, if possible. There have likewise been times that 2-3 stars were deserved. The good times far outweigh the bad, however, so I'm settling on 4, 'cause I just keep coming back for more. Most of what you read is accurate: Flying Star is over-priced, especially for Albuquerque. The truth of the matter is, however, that it doesn't really have much competition. There are a lot of vegetarian options, locally grown ingredients are used frequently (an important point to some), and the homemade desserts, of which there are MANY, are usually awesome. (I don't recommend the sugar cookies, however.) The service is hit-or-miss. Some employees are friendly and helpful, others are annoyed they had to show up for work and don't attempt to hide their annoyance at your indecision over the daunting menu. You don't have to deal with them much, and you'll probably like your food, so it's usually worth the risk. The atmosphere is fun and laid-back/ There's free wi-fi and you can usually track down an outlet (some locations have computer "bars"). It's a great place to read, study, or meet friends for a pot of tea, dessert, or a meal. Some of my favorites include: Raspberry peach pie. I am a pie snob. This stuff is good. (Go à la mode...duh.) Chocolate mousse cake. Bread Pudding. There used to be these insanely heavenly eclairs. They weighed upwards of a pound (yes, I took one home and weighed it). I haven't seen them recently, but they may still be there... The breakfast burrito is great (and huge), as is the NM burger. My sister loves the SW Bennie ("2 eggs over medium on top of turkey sausage, cheesy chile sauce & our grilled English muffin"). The Greek Goddess and Crave salads are fresh and flavorful. There are also specials all the time, and they're usually great. You can't go wrong with a soup, either. I recently had the Caldo de Pollo and it was soooo good.
(4)Annie W.
Diner dining doesn't get much better than this! A cute little place with colorful walls and a bit of an overwhelming menu of very delicious dishes! And the bakery! Oh, the bakery! I had the cho mein noodles (SOOO good) and a slice of AMAZING pineapple upside down cake. Heavenly. Would definitely return!
(4)Mister D.
Fun, hipster place just a block or so off of Central Avenue. The food looked good and the space had ample room for both diners and coffee-drinkers, For breakfast, I had the green chile benedict with black bean patty. It was excellent. If I had more time in Duke City, then I'd have dined here a second time. Now that I am back in California, I kinda regret not trying one of their dessets. Everyone with whom I spoke said that this was THE place for desserts.
(4)Steve H.
Rachel and I both loved this place! The atmosphere, the food, the concept all worked very nicely together. I chose the "fish dish" lunch special, and, good as it was, every dish I saw carried past me while I was eating made me want to stay long enough "to try that one too." Good vegetarian options alone would rate the Flying Star as excellent. Service was indeed exceptional. If you are in Albuquerque or Santa Fe, you really must experience the Flying Star.
(5)Alex K.
I really liked the atmosphere, and the food was clean and delicious. I got the breakfast burrito, which said was big enough to share but I ate the whole thing easily. It was big, though. I made the mistake of forgetting to order meat on the side (burrito $9.95, turkey sausage option for $1.79) so I was disappointed. Being a cafeteria style with a line, I wasn't able to simply ask the waitress for some sausage. I would go back to try it again with meat. I got the green chile version (choice of red or green) since the region is famous for it, and I got red sauce on the side. Neither were spicy at all, and there was no kick like the one from the Owl Cafe, which was awesome. So that was disappointing. My girlfriend got the french toast, which was extra sweet - you can chew the brown sugar in the syrup that it's covered in - my girlfriend liked it but I though it was overkill. The fruits were caramelized perfectly though. Very very good. The thing that disappointed me was the prices for pie - $6 for a slice of pie? Forget it. I guess I will never know how good it is. 5 stars for atmosphere, 4 stars for taste, 3 stars for price.
(4)Trenton T.
Best dessert in town. Awesome magazine selection and a great place to get some work done. Also love the noodles!!
(5)Chris J.
What a cool place! Nice bakery with a wide selection of items. The Crave salad was extremely good with a nice variety of fruits and veggies in it as well as freshly grilled chicken. My coworker had the egg sandwich which she said was probably the best she'd ever had. I followed the salad up with one of the monstrous red velvet cupcakes, which tasted good but was a bit too dried out. It was from a cooler so I'm guessing it was made earlier and dried out in there. But, with the wide variety of desserts and deliciousness to be had, I may be back again this week!
(4)Dana P.
Would of given this place 4stars but had 2 issues with this place! I ordered their Buddha Bowl vegan style (tofu to replace chicken and no wontons). When my bowl came it had wontons. I told them I ordered no wontons. The waiter said sorry and sent it back to the kitchen. A minute later my bowl came back. I was skeptical that it came back so fast but I figured they fixed it. We'll, I almost finished my food when I noticed broken pieces of wonton in my bowl. It sounds like they took my food back to the kitchen and just scraped off the wontons!!! Luckily, I'm not allergic to eggs!! But seriously, too lazy to make me a new bowl!! Also, I ordered the Star BLT for my son. Paid $10 for it and the rye bread was nearly burnt!! The portion was also really small!! The only good thing about this place is the desserts! My family said they were delicious (red velvet, bread pudding, and mud pie). We may order desserts to go but the food is a hit or miss with the servers and kitchen staff.
(3)Celia J.
Love the atmosphere and many healthier, delicous and varied meatless choices! Never a bad bet, slightly expensive, but I guess something has to offset the wifi...?
(4)Larry L.
Simply a great place to visit and even better when you are on vacation with your dog. I recommend the mac-cheese with bacon. For a little more protein add in a breast of grilled chicken. Plenty of choices for all types of diets. Gluten free, carnivore, and whatever comes between. Our dog loved the patio where she could talk (in the way that only dogs can) to the other dogs and the people were fun to talk to. We finished the meal off with your gluten free chocolate cake (OMG) and the ginger peach pie.
(5)Jace G.
This location of Flying Star feels a little bit smaller than many, so I prefer it for that reason. It's your standard flying star fare: solid & tasty, but as many have pointed out... it's a bit pricey, especially for ABQ. $6 for a slice of pie?... Really? $2 for a cookie? $6 for a burrito? And as others have pointed out too, the food is fresh. In a town where there is definitely cheaper food out there, a lot of it is poorer quality than Flying Star. So Flying Star is more expensive, but it is better than many places in ABQ. That said, I don't think it would do as well if it were in a bigger city with some real competition. Here in ABQ, it (along with the co-owned Satellite coffee) it's the only game it town of this type of restaurant.
(4)K W.
Omelett was not good however their vegetable rice bowl with tofu was decent. The macaroni and cheese looked tasty and the service is good. They have outdoor seating which allows dogs.
(3)Lynne H.
Pro: The black-bean veggie burger is awesome. Con: All the prices have recently been hiked up by a dollar or so. $9 for a burger with a side of fruit seems a bit steep to me.
(4)Ellen H.
This is my favorite Flying Star location, although it may be the most busy (IMHO). The ordering process runs pretty fast and every seat has a good people watching view. I love the "Red Stuff" drink; I think its an iced herbal tea - VERY REFRESHING! Everything I've ordered has been delish as well. May I recommend the vegan Buddha Bowl; brown rice, veggies, and tofu - yum! It's also large enough to feed 2 people ;) The only downside I see with FS is (what everyone else says) its a bit pricey. Not recommended for budgets! Otherwise - I enjoy each time I am here!

Whenever I visit Albuquerque, the first thing I do is go to Flying Star. Flying Star offers an expansive menu of foods made from local products when possible. The chicken is free-range and both the chicken and beef are all natural. Many satisfying options for the vegetarian as well. The California sandwich has great flavor, and the homemade black bean burger is very well crafted and has been named Albuquerque's best veggie burger by several different groups. I order it with avocado. Yum. The desserts are as wonderful as they look. They offer everything from a maximum fudge density cake (after two bites you surely will be overloaded in chocolaty goodness) to Italian cream cake (supreme apricot/nut/cream cheese combo) to a good ol' chocolate chip cookie (lots of chocolate chunks with hints of cinnamon--very sweet and chewy). This month the restaurant is supporting the local animal shelter and donating nearly all profits from their glazed sugar cookies to the cause. Desserts to please man and man's best friend alike! This location has an outdoor pet-friendly patio, a colorful and comfortable inside seating area, plenty of plug-ins for your laptop, and racks full of books and magazines to browse (as if you'll want to look at anything but your food!). The place was just starting to empty out during my most recent visit at 7pm. Flying Star can get crazy-busy, but the staff seems to know how to handle stress and is usually very friendly and helpful. When you visit Flying Star, your eyes will undoubtedly be bigger than your stomach, but not to worry--a fridge full of Flying Star left-overs is anything but a problem.

This is a very expensive cafe but very high quality food.

This is an awesome Flying star with an outdoor patio, indoor magazine rack and allover hipness that's hard to beat. I had the fiesta rolls for breakfast (with a side of tomato slices) mocha and chai latte. The fiesta rolls are great with just a hint of spiciness that stem from the flair of this Albuquerque establishment. The Mocha was tasty, but comes in a giant glass that's difficult to hold. The chai was a bit sub-par but acceptable. The desserts look delicious! I tried the humongoid eclair and split it 5 ways amongst my friends and it was enough for all of us. I also tried the Greek goddess salad and their turkey sandwich. The servers are very accommodating to my quirky whims and it's a pretty popular spot seeing as it was always bustling when we came in. Interesting food, good company and a great atmosphere. I hope I come back again on a visit to Albuquerque.

First off, I could eat Flying Star's cherry pie all day until I exploded, OK? But I'm writing this review about the burger I had there recently. This was at the Paseo location. I ordered it medium, and here it comes--beautiful presentation on the plate, great bun, it's all there, right? Not. Somebody got the grill so hot that the meat was actually burned to a nasty black crisp around the edges. The inside was medium, but I couldn't taste it because the outside was like biting into a charcoal briquet. Major disappointment.

Yum. I love Flying Star. Its a must on my list of places to visit during my trips to NM for a couple reasons... The Californian Sandwich. From the FS website - "Marinated, grilled crimini mushrooms, Swiss cheese, avocado, tomatoes, caramelized onions & ranch dressing on grilled sourdough." Mmm. The crazy selection of mags available for free perusal while inside. I could easily blow the better part of an afternoon here.

Always like what I order and the staff are great. I always take folks there that are visiting from out of town. It's a sure thing they will like it. :0)

What would I give to have them expand all the way up to WA!!! While living in Albuquerque for a few years I went often to the Flying Star locations around town. It's a bit expensive, but very good and a great place to meet people!

My second home when I'm home in Albuquerque. I love Flying Star for their atmosphere (brilliant interior design, if you ask me), laid-back attitude (no one cares how long you sit there), bakery offerings, and, above all, red stuff. Red stuff?, you ask. It's a concoction of cranberry juice and herbal teas served in a tall glass with ice, sometimes lemon, that is really delicious. It's not overly bitter, like cranberry juice is want to be, nor does it really taste like tea. It's a must-try if you're at any Flying Star of Satellite spin-off. Flying Star's bakery offerings have never disappointed me - I love their key lime pie, and their chocolate cake offerings are always densely chocolatey. As far as their food is concerned, their speciality items like the Buddha Bowl are delicious, but tends to be a little bit spicier than I want (I'm somewhat of a weakling in the spice/hot department, though). Their breakfast burritos and graburritos always receive rave reviews from fellow diners, and the portions are all nicely sized (huge, though they've scaled it back recently). My only real complaint? The prices. Pricing aspires to infuse a big-city into little-town Albuquerque, which isn't always well received when I can go down the street to Garcia's and get a huge meal for under $8. All the same, the food is always fresh, there's always dessert, and free wireless and their extensive selection of magazines (actually larger than your typical bookstore) really outweigh the extra dollar or two you're paying.

this place was super packed and we had to sit outside, but loved the chicken and curry rice lunch special - and as always, rhubarb/strawberry pie was fantastic!

This is a great place for breakfast...try the two breakfast sandwiches or the spanish omlette. They are a bit on the pricier end for lunch/dinner, but have very good salads and their specials are very good (the Cubano that they have right now is spectacular - I wish they'd add it to the regular menu).

I remember when I lived here, this Flying Star saved me many a time. Open late-ish for the Que, great rotating cakes and organically grown, the chicken is free range and I believe the beef is Neiman's Ranch. I have to say my all time fave was the tempeh burger though. Breakfast is also great. Most (if not all) the locations have free wireless access and are super good about letting you just buy a coffee and sit... and sit... and sit... Notice the complaints about the price hikes. I lived in Abq for 7 years and in SF for 4. 9 bucks for a burger? Meh.

I love this place - my favorite place to eat. I have been coming here since it was called the Double Rainbow. I would recommend something from the menu, but all of the dishes I have had are good. Oh...and the cake...where oh where do I begin? They have a cake/pie to please every pallet - chocolate, fruity, European style - you name it. Everything is always so fresh too! The only down side? It's very busy on weekends and can be hard to get a table. Some items are overpriced.

Decent quality, pretty expensive. $7 for a piece of Red Velvet cake for example. The desserts are good, lunch items are just ok, I usually don't feel like they are worth the cost. I gave it several chances but don't feel the Saucer lives up to the hype.

I'm kind of lumping all of the flying stars in together, since they're practically the same from my experience, but this is the one I go to most. There are a lot of things going for it; diverse interesting menu, fresh ingredients, neat atmosphere. Of particular note are its salads and pancakes. The lemonade, coffee, and tea are all top notch as well. But it loses points for both unreliability - multiple times I've been outright disappointed with my food - and cost. For the price they charge, you should be entirely confident that you're not going to get a bland, uninteresting meal. Seems that this has happened occasionally with their breakfast food, lunch/dinner food, and their desserts. We keep going back, because it is one of the more interesting and healthier local places around. But it is far from perfect.

Flying Star, or as long time fans know it, "Double Rainbow" is a lovely place to meet friends for a quick bite to eat. However, that being said, the price that this cafe charges is just ridiculous. The food is good, not great. The environment is nice, but not worth the insane cost of food. A piece of pie and a drink should not be $14.

This place is out of this world. From the Red Chili beef Chili to the Breakfast burrito to the amazing Coconut Cream Pie. Everything was So Good. Can't stop eating here on my trip. 3 of 4 meals so far at the flying star!!

I love this Flying Star, the reason why I love it is because they have a large place and "petio" section if you have any pets. On top of that they have a separate section for readers and laptop users, which I am of both. I can sit here all day, read, socialize and get online. My favorite drink is their amazing Iced Mango Tea, which is about $2.88 with tax, and you can get all the refills one can want, on top of that you can take it to go; just ask for a "to-go" cup (iced or hot) and then top off. Their food is always incredible, but pretty pricey. If I'm very hungry then I go all out, plus they have an incredible selection of desserts.

Very helpful staff and great food. Depending on where you're sitting, you can hear the expediter for the kitchen calling out orders and moving things along. They are very efficient and the way the restaurant is set up is somewhat unique. I had the Ranch Breakfast and it was great. If you do that, get the green chile sausage for a New Mexico twist. Lots of interesting items on the menu. You place your order at the counter, they give you a number and bring your food to you. This particular location is in a nice neighborhood and has outdoor seating. It is also a newsstand (with magazines you can purchase) and they have free WiFi. There are lots of people with laptops there, so if you're looking for a place to answer some emails and get a little work done while enjoying a great meal, you'll be right at home.
