although i heard this was one of the few authentic chinese restaurants in abq, the food was very disappointing. the service was excellent and the atmosphere was ok, however, i came to eat and the food was just sad. but since the service was good, ill try them again in the future. maybe i just ordered the wrong things.

Went there with a couple colleagues. They had a special menu that went 2/12/15 through 2/28/15 just for the Chinese New Year. We got there around 6:30pm and it was quite busy! Had to wait for a table for about 30 minutes. The service was at an ok-pace - they told me that it is a family-run establishment. We were served some hot tea along with ice water. We ordered a bunch of items: the beef brisket clay pot, sizzling chicken dish, deep-fried whole chicken, shrimps and scallops with fried cream, and the pineapple fried rice. To sum up, everything was very fresh and tasty. I would like to refute previous reviews who stated that their non-seafood items were sub-par - try the beef clay pot and the deep-fried chicken and you will be convinced. The sauce for the clay pot was rich and tasty without being greasy; the deep-fried chicken was the best deep-fried chicken I have had outside North Carolina, where the art of deep-frying is well-practiced. The sizzling chicken mesmerized us with its mysterious yummy sauce. The friend rice had the rare and precious "wok-qi" that traditional Cantonese people know about :) The shrimps and scallops were fresh and cooked just right. In a nutshell, go to East Ocean if you want authentic Chinese food!

The potstickers are doughy and soggy. The food wasn't worth eating. I will never eat here again

One of the better Chinese restaurants in town. I've been a frequent flier here for the past 11 years. One thing that I have to advise you to stay away from is their combination dishes, they aren't that good. Common when you go to an authentic Chinese restaurant, order something authentic, if you don't know, ask the owners who are also the waitresses and cashiers and bus ladies. They aren't the most friendly ones but they could be nice once in a blue moon. They look angry all the time, I promise you, it's not you. For the last 11 years, I've seen them smile about three times. My favorite dishes to order here are crispy fried chicken wings and their seafood soup. I'm not a big fan of seafood but I like how it's loaded with bunch of small tofu cubes. Never tried roasted duck before? They do a decent job here. Also give their salted fish fried rice...quite tasty! They deep fry the salted fish and then mix them in fried rice, crunchy bits of them salted fish are what gonna give your palate the kick. Ah try their Hongkong style crispy noodle too!

Terrible restaurant! Beware that they charge for rice!!! We had 8 people, and excluding appetizers and noodle dishes, we had 5 entrees that would have normally come with rice. Yet they only gave us one container of rice, and charged us extra for the 2nd one ($5 for a large!). Food is full of msg, and very salty (so you have to order more rice). Plates and glasses must have been washed by bleach or something because you can totally taste it in the food and in the water. For out of towners who have eaten (good food) in other cities, this would be a huge disappointment!!!

great food, but very high prices . small portion. services very terrible, the server dont know what a smile is. i bet she never smile in her life. the owner act like we need them. very poor services i give them 2 star because they cook good food but beside that everything else is an -1 . no other restaurant charge 5 buck for white rices when it should come with the meal. who gonna eat the dish by itself. every restaurant give a side dish with the meal, ohh no not them they charge for rices when the plate is 15-20 buck. i do not wish any one to go here . i dont go here unless i have to, like an invite or special occasion that some one invite me to. not good not good no good no good. the owner is so stuck up. cant even say hi how are you.

My family has eaten at East Ocean for over 20 years and have always enjoyed it. It is a great place for an reasonably priced lunch with quick service and very good food. Their family-size bowl of wor wonton soup is always welcome on a cool day and the lo mein is the best in town. This is definitely my kid's favorite restaurant and we have to overrule them frequently or we would eat here every time we went out. One significant gripe - the mushrooms they use now. When they were fresh they were an important part of any dish, now they are canned and they get picked out and tossed away. I know others have complained about this so hopefully they will get the message. I read a comment on their staff being unfriendly, but I would say they are more reserved than unfriendly. Don't come here looking for a Cheers-type environment , but if you want great Chinese food served quickly, East Ocean is a the place.

My parents are cranky, picky Asians when it comes to food, but they love making the trip to East Ocean. As its name suggests, East Ocean's strength lies in their seafood dishes, seriously. We've gone a number of times and we're always pleased with the seafood soup. The salt and pepper shrimp is wonderfully crunchy and well-flavored. My little sister and I are particularly obsessed with the seafood hotpot, a boiling stew of fried tofu, squid, scallops, and shrimp. Yum~ The fried rice here is awesome too. Seriously. Order a full order. Something about their wok gives it a nice smoky flavor. For vegetable order, the kai lan (Chinese broccoli) and eggplant in spicy garlic sauce are delicious. If you order the typical Americanized fare like sweet and sour chicken, you're not going to see the real East Ocean.

I have been going to east ocean for more than 10 years. I have always gone in for to go or to dine in. I have only ordered about 7 things on the menu such as beef with broccoli, paper chicken, chicken chow-main, egg drop soup, and a couple other things there is only one thing I can say I dislike about east ocean. The fish tank. When I was younger I always wanted to watch the fish. Now as I have grown up I have realized that those fish really smell bad. I always sit on the other side and I marked them down one star for the fish tank. Seems ridiculous but when you go to a restaurant you shouldn't have to smell a gross fish tank.

I don't usually write a bah humbug review but I've eaten here several times and have always wished I chose a different place for lunch. The last time I ordered sweet & sour chicken. It amounted to a small bit of chicken batter dipped and fried then cut into peaces. The batter was IMO inappropriate for that dish as it was very thick it was more like a desert than a lunch. The other dishes I've had I believe moo-goo-gi pan were only so so. My buddy swears by the war noodle soup and it does look good. I've not had it as I'm not into seafood. If you find your self here you might give it a try. Given the name of the restaurant "East Ocean" maybe you gotta get the seafood.

Every time I visit my grandma in Albuquerque, she insists on treating us at East Ocean for at least one meal. And I always remembered it being quality Chinese food with decent service. However this last time around, about 32 of us had all convened in Albuquerque for a family reunion and my grandmother's birthday. We made reservations at East Ocean and pre-picked the menu. I don't know whether it was just the day or what, but most of the food was incredibly over salted. We ended up sending a dish or two back, which pretty much never happens in a Chinese restaurant. I will say that the seafood soup, the ginger chicken, and the fish were delicious. Don't even bother with the ma po tofu. I probably won't be back in Albuquerque for at least a year, but hopefully in that time East Ocean will have gotten their salt under control.

My favorite place to go! Wonderful seafood soup and sake! My husband and I have tried to order something different each time we go and have yet to find a single dish we don't like. The prices are great and we always have plenty to bring home for lunch the next day. I really don't want others to discover this hidden treasure because then it would get too crowded to get a table!

I recently returned to Albuquerque from the Bay Area and the one and only thing I miss is the Asian food. I recall that the local Asian clientelle frequented East Ocean from when I lived here before; so I went and was highly disappointed. The two items I craved when I lived in San Francisco were shrimp fried rice and Mongolian beef (this place right next to my apartment made the best!). I ordered shrimp fried rice and it tasted like day-old Minute Rice--very crumbly and crunchy--no texture at all! The won tons were also not very good either. There still was a large Asian clientelle there that evening. I'm imagining they are getting served the "real thing" while the non-Asian "naive" clientelle gets served Minute Rice. I won't be back.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
