I've been on the hunt for a great sushi place in Burque and I finally found Crazy Fish. I am fairly picky about sushi, so I had found most places in town to just be mediocre. It's never been super busy when I've come here, perhaps because I've only been here for lunch. I tried to come for dinner on my birthday, but they were closed due to an air conditioner malfunction. I'm not really into all the rolls, I like to keep the sushi experience simple, so this is really just about the nigiri and sashimi. Truly some of the best I've had and if I can recommend one thing that you absolutely must try here, it would be the stripe bass nigiri...it is amazing.

My wife were visiting Albuquerque for a few days and we really wanted sushi. After a quick Yelp search this place caught our attention. We were told that Nob Hill is a good area for night life and young people so we thought it'd be fun to come here. First off, the place has a very good atmosphere. We were greeted right away and picked a place to sit. The server came to us right away and asked if we'd ever been there before. She was very friendly. We ordered the gyoza as an appetizer and it was really good. However, it wasn't big enough to share with someone else. They were much smaller than the gyoza I have ordered at other places. My wife and I ordered four rolls. We ordered the New Mexican roll, Las Vegas roll, Spicy Tuna roll and the Crazy Night roll. We were shocked when it came out because the rolls were almost twice the size that were normally used to seeing! That was amazing. We didn't think we'd be able to eat it all, but we did! I like the place, the area and service. It's also very reasonably priced! I'd definitely go back and would recommend.

We love to come here to get our seafood and sushi fix!!! Sit at the bar and you get to watch tv and chat with the Chefs. Watching sushi being made is an art form for real!
(4)Clara H.
Delicious! Best nigiri I've had in Albuquerque so far. The fish is fresh and the place doesn't have that bad slightly fishy smell that many sushi places get (including the others in the area...) The guy behind the sushi bar is, I suspect, the owner, and he knows his stuff. Is has a nice atmosphere and sake selection, as well. This is the place to go for sushi in the Nob Hill area!
(5)Laith Y.
The sushi was very fresh, the rice and seaweed were of premium quality. The staff was professional and restaurant was exceptionally clean. Ambience was modern/contemporary with a splash of Japanese culture. Prices were VERY reasonable considering the high quality of sushi. Great place to enjoy dinner with a date. I was very impressed with the sushi chefs. They were meticulous to say the least. Each piece of sushi was by the book and prepared like eatable art. Highly recommended.
(5)Mandi D.
Found this place on my road trip. Very pleased with the restaurant. The main Chef was very friendly and made me a roll special off of what I told him I liked in sushi. It was awesome. Also got a spicy tuna roll that was great!
(4)L. L.
Dined at Crazy Fish last night, a bit apprehensive after being a huge fan of Ben's for many years. We were pleasantly surprised and look forward to returning. Great, attentive service, friendly sushi chef Kit, well-lit atmosphere, delicious, fresh, generous slices of tuna and yellow tail sushi with a warm eel roll. I highly recommend.
(5)Jessica B.
Overpriced and very small portions for sushi. Fish is cut poorly and there is a very small variety available. If you want sushi go somewhere else. Haven't tried there other meals but my friends weren't impressed with those either. Service is mediocre at best.
(2)Dave S.
The best sushi in the city -- the spicy tuna and eel are excellent. The staff are friendly and attentive as well.

I knew they called this place Crazy Fish for a reason and lets just say it was Cra~Cray!!! We came in for a birthday celebration and was really excited to try some sushi and any new items they could entice us with, however from the moment we walked in the two "Itame's" or I shall just say Sushi guys starred as we walked in, I was thinking I know I look incredibly fabulous but please don't make it obvious....lol just kiddin or do we look like monsters.....lol moving on to more Cra~Cra our server who came to our table was really very nervous and was sweating profusely which that totally through us off, we were concerned whether he may keel over at anytime while serving us, thankfully he didn't and was actually a very nice gentlemen. We ordered green teas to start along with Shrimp Tempura & Edamame all came out as they should. Than on to our main dishes ordered were Beef Yakisoba, Teriyaki Chicken Bowl and Fresh Fish Salad these dishes all were decent but not something that would bring us back for more. BTW we never ordered any Sushi at all because from the constant peculiar stares to the bizare funny farm type atmosphere there was no way in hell I was going to get sushi from them two... hate to be so harsh but all in all this was not a good birthday celebration that went down memory lane for the family. I see they are now under new management and hope they did make a turn for the better because this place in the future does deserve a second chance.

Crazy Fish has been around for such a long time, it's the first sushi shop I fell in love with in ABQ and overall I still dig what's coming out of this kitchen, but 20 minutes of a wait, just to order, broke my Cupid's bow. I'll throw out two basic maxims about dining out, here. Numero uno: Bad service ruins good food. Right? You could be served a platter of heaven, but if you wait forever to order, the food just doesn't suffice. Numero dos: Sushi servers have it easy. The Japanese figured out a pretty stealth approach to the whole service ordeal: give diners a piece of paper to order from, hand the sheet to the waiter, done. I mean, it's pretty easy. Get drink orders, bring out the food, keep the waters filled, finished. So yeah, we weren't thrilled with the lack of attention to our table, but we dealt with it. And getting back to wait staff responsibilities, here's a novel idea: when delivering the goods, how about identifying the rolls on the plates? Still probably the best sushi in Nob Hill.
(3)Austin W.
In the desert there is an oasis called Crazy Fish. The service is consistently outstanding and the food is phenomenal. The owner and head chef is not only friendly, but plates larger than expected and extremely fresh dishes. He recommends the Garlic Sashimi.
(5)Priscila H.
My favorite thing about this place is the really friendly and professional staff. They come and chat you up occasionally, yet give you your space as a patron. The only thing about the atmosphere that throws me off upon walking in is the red and black color scheme; otherwise it's a comfy and casual place. Its Nob Hill location is conveniently close to campus, too. Alright, the sushi. My usual is the green chile (because Albuquerque) and I highly recommend it because it's crisp, subtly spicy, and very well made. My next favorite is the dragon roll: a robust serving of avocado, (Avocado for days!) And a nice presentation on the plate.
(5)Robert P.
So everybody knows, Crazy Fish is under new management and the new sushi chefs are friendly. I also had experienced a weird vibe from the very tall, quiet sushi chef that was there previously. As some other reviewers mentioned, it wasn't a very welcoming environment previously. On to the food: The garlic sashimi is definitely one of my favorites. The presentation of it and flavor is fantastic. Just make sure you aren't on a date when you order it! I also had the Dynamite Roll and some other basic rolls, all delicious. When you order their beef bento box, you get real new-york steak slices, which is a big treat. You pay more, but the cut of steak makes a huge difference. Service: Service was pretty moderate, not too bad, not too great. I think the cash register being in the back separates the customers from the servers, but I couldn't see it being anywhere else I suppose. Atmosphere: The atmosphere is pretty great. I like the red table tops with black seating. Makes it seem very exclusive when you walk in, a great place to take a date at night. They also offer 10% discounts to UNM students, so I took advantage of that. Though it isn't huge of a discount, it was something. Food: 5/5 Service: 4/5 Atmosphere: 5/5
(5)Terri R.
Come here every time I come into town. Try the "ceviche"--to die for. Friendly, great service, fabulous specials. Don't waste your time going any place else!!!
(5)Nat S.
Solid fish for a moderate to expensive price tag. They have a decent selection of hot and chilled sakes. I went with a group of people and was ably to try a variety of things. I shared the sashimi platter and got a duo of nagiri albacore tuna. The albacore tuna was the most disappointing item I tried. The tuna roll covered in avocado was the best. There was some kind of noodle curry soup which was very flavorful. I would say you want to budget 25-50$ a head coming here. Service was excellent. Fish was between 3 and 4 stars. Not my favorite sushi place I have eaten at in town, but still very good, just a bit on the more expensive side.
(4)Ashley E.
I really like Crazy Fish. I've been numerous times. I've never had such affordable, quality sushi. I get the garlic yellow-tail appetizer and then fill up on seaweed salad and sashimi. The usual suspects: are tuna, salmon, albacore, and yellowtail (the huz gets unagi). It's always firm and fresh! I've only had one weird thing happen to me at this restaurant and I'm pretty sure it's not relevant, but I'm going to say it anyway: My husband and I had our first date here about a year and a half ago. Our server was a guy I'd gone on a date with a couple weeks earlier. Dude looked surprise. I guess he had failed to mention that he was a server at CF. Awkward! Most importantly, I've never had a bad experience with the food or service (yes, even including the jilted guy)
(4)Deni D.
So gross. What happened?! This used to be one of my favorite sushi places and tonight was just horrible. The service was bad, my sashimi tasted so old and smelled gross, and there was one waitress to like 30 people. My partner and I both feel sick after eating there. I'm so disappointed. Crazy Fish used to be so good and I'd always rave and recommend it. Now I think I'm going to start looking for a new sushi place.
(1)Jim C.
New: Japanese pepper tempura! Close your eyes - Ueno park, cherry blossoms, pepper tempura and a cold beer.
(5)Pepper P.
Super creepy sushi chef wouldn't answer any of my questions, but he did talk to the guy at the other end of the bar in English?? He treated the waitress in the same way. I had a Chirashi bowl. The fish had bones and scales... and the texture/flavor of the rice was poor and off. Miso was ok. Hands down, worst sushi experience (for me) ever. Including the Hellatious birthday ball party place. My server was the only saving grace. She was pleasant and efficient.
(1)Nicole O.
The best speciality rolls in town! Must try, they are so tasty and unique. Great location in Nob Hill, good service and cool atmosphere.
(5)Emanuel G.
DISASTROUS!! The recent change in ownership has not been for the better. We've been coming here for seven years and had always enjoyed the food and had been treated courteously. We returned last evening for the first time following the ownership change. Although we are both in our sixties, we were "carded" by our twenty-something waitress when we placed our order for beer and wine. My wife dutifully presented her driver's license; I did not bring mine and was refused service. I listened to the server's lame apology for this, citing a non-existant statute that ostensibly mandates that every sixty and seventy-something patron show proof of age in order for the establishment to avoid potential citation. I did not protest and we finished our meal. After dozens of visits to Crazy Fish over the past several years, this fiasco has guaranteed that WE WILL NEVER COME BACK. I will also make sure to inform as many people as I know of Crazy Fish's looney policy of carding individuals who are visibly forty years beyond the legal drinking age as a requisite for service. Bad service and abject stupidity trump good food every time.

I'm a long-time regular who often dines there in larger groups, but maybe former regular after my attempt to have lunch there last Wed. I had just sold a car and had a ton of cash so came by to spend some of it. I sat at the bar for 10 minutes before giving up and leaving. No one so much as greeted me or gave me water or a menu. I appreciate busy lunch rushes, having worked as a waiter for many, many years. But if you're that busy, you are supposed to acknowledge the customer and let them know that you will be with them shortly. Fuck, the sushi cook had time to bullshit with other customers and slowly wipe things, but not enough time to greet me. No one even gave a shit when I started putting on my jacket and then headed out the door. So I had my $50 lunch across the street at Shogun instead. Boo Crazy Fish!
(1)Lunar B.
I have always enjoyed the food here, but the service is hit or miss. There is one really great waitress who is super friendly and efficient, but if she's not there it's always a gamble. I tried to order take-out tonight and the person who answered said, "You're gonna have to give me a minute" and then disappeared forever, so I opted for Shogun instead. I also really wish they would list their prices on their online menu...
(3)Pauline P.
Small little joint, but worth it! One of the best and my personal favorite sushi bar in Albuquerque.
(5)Bella B.
I have been here once before and I came back. I like this place. We tried the tofu appetizer...it was tasty. We followed with seaweed salad, dynamite roll, shrimp tempura roll and California roll. AND salmon teriyaki dinner, chicken noodle soup (udon) and mixed tempura. ALL delicious. We did not have room for the green tea ice cream dessert. (Go figure.) The food was great and so was the service. Is this the best sushi that I have ever had in my life? No. That being said, this place is very good and I do recommend it.
(3)Jazmine V.
One of the better sushi places in Albuquerque. They have a good selection of different sushi, whether you like cooked or raw. The service was great, too. I'm sure I'll dine there again :D.
(4)Damacio U.
Very small, very quant, had lunch special of sashimi and buddy had eel bowl, great prices and quality. Our waitress was very efficient, just with place had better ambiance. But I will come back for quality and value.
(4)Jennifer M.
Came here about two weeks ago with a friend from Santa Fe who asked me to find a super great sushi place in town. Well, I didn't do any research at all and decided I'd drive him down central until I found the first sushi place I could see. Crazy Fish won. The restaurant was kind of cold and overall, I wouldn't rate the food to be all that outstanding. There was an extremely undesirable fishy taste, which I'm assuming isn't so good. Don't get me wrong, I dont find fish to be an undesirable taste at all.. unless it's not all that fresh. The bathrooms are weird. When we went there was some odd japanese lesson going on over the speakers. My friend was startled because he though someone else was in the bathroom at first. Totally creepy. The service though was great and they didn't mind that we sat for a bit to wait out a little rain storm. But, regardless of the good service, it's still unlikely that I'd frequent this place. There's a LOT of sushi places in town and perhaps I'll have to explore further.
(2)Sandra F.
Always good, clean and prices are fair. Usually order the spicy tuna, Philadelphia Roll (cream cheese) and the Shrimp/Veggie Tempura....my mouth is watering just typing this! :)
(4)Emily L.
Is it strange that I've had some of the best sushi I've ever eaten... in the desert? It shouldn't be that way, but somehow Albuquerque has one of the tastiest sushi restaurants I've been to in a long time. I'd love to know the secret of getting fish that fresh when you're so far from the sea! And the sake portions are very generous... a potent combination.
(4)Lindsey J.
The sushi is fresh and the prices are reasonable ($5-7 per roll). There are a mix of standard and custom sushi on the menu. We had the New Mexico, the spicy salmon, the vegetable, the crunchy, and the alaska rolls. All very good. Beware though, the spicy rolls are built for people in the southwest, so they are HOT! We ordered take-out so I can't comment on the service, but the hostesses were very helpful and courteous.
(3)Aileen W.
This is a sushi joint that has a lot of potential...but falls short. We were told to try their garlic sashimi appetizer, but we weren't impressed by the flavors. The vinegar, garlic, and onions on top of thin slices of yellow tail completely overwhelmed the delicate fish. It's also a really tiny portion for the price, which is disappointing. I always judge the quality of sushi at a new place by their spicy tuna roll. If they can pull of this simple roll, then they really know sushi. At Crazy Fish, the spicy tuna is finely minced and it's spicy, but nothing revelatory. Not bad for a quick fix, but definitely not the best I've had. I do like their Crazy Fish "Big roll" which is two humongous slices of nori wrapped rice with a ton of fish in the center. The quality of the fish is good, very firm and not the least bit smelly. This one has a combo of yellow tail, salmon, tilapia, and mackerel. Pricey at 10 bucks but very good. However, the last time I got it, there were a couple of wayward scales left on the mackerel and that was beyond gross...it's the last thing you want to pick out of your mouth when you're supposed to be enjoying silky fish. Maybe the chefs need more training. What I don't appreciate about Crazy Fish, and the primary reason I'm only giving it three stars, is the terrible service. It's a weird galley-like restaurant, small and cramped. There isn't a lot of room for the servers to move about and if you're there for take-out, there is no place to sit and you just have to stand about the bar awkwardly after having to walk into the back to pay at the waiter's station. They really need to get a counter up front because walking back there amidst tables filled with customers is kind of unnerving. I'll visit this place reluctantly, on those nights that I need a sushi fix, since it's a stone's throw away from my house. But honestly, it's really not the best you could get in NM.

Dear Fellow Yelpers, For the first time ever, you let me down. While in ABQ for the Balloon Fiesta (an amazing experience for another review...) my boyfriend thought we ought to give a sushi place a try. "I'll look on Yelp!" I said, and quickly pulled up Crazy Fish, with reviews that made me think it might be the best sushi we would ever have short of Little Tokyo. Boy, was I wrong. The edamame was good at least. We ordered a spicy salmon roll, a New Mexico roll (crab, green chile, etc), a shrimp tempura roll, and a Vegas roll. When the waiter brought the rolls to the table, they LOOKED good. Everyone's sushi looked good when I walked by, too. But then I took a bite. I started with the Vegas roll, which was thick with tempura and didn't appear to have any seaweed holding it together. Could it be that the deep friend batter was holding all of the rice, cream cheese, and crab in place? No way. Yes way. It tasted like a grilled cheese sandwich with its thick breading and overstuffed cream cheese filling, which I guess wouldn't have been so bad, except that I'd ordered a Vegas roll. Pass. Next, I tried the New Mexico roll. I suspected that this would be similar to the Arizona rolls I've had in Tucson: essentially a California roll with a hint of the regional pepper to make it a bit more interesting. In Arizona, you get the spicy goodness of a jalepeno mixed in. The New Mexico roll meant green chile. Unfortunately, that's all I tasted. Again, not so bad, except that I ordered a sushi roll. The flavor lingered and didn't get better as time went on. Pass. Lastly, I tried the shrimp tempura roll. This was the roll that killed my appetite for sushi. It tasted like salt water, and not in a fresh seafood kind of way. It was the worst bite of sushi I've ever had. Even my boyfriend despised it, and he's the least picky eater I know. At this point, there was no way I was going to venture into the salmon roll. My boyfriend asked for the check, and when the waiter seemed shocked at how much we didn't eat, he asked what was wrong. My boyfriend said we just weren't into it. The waiter seemed pissed, but did remove my Diet Coke and our edamame from the bill. At the end of the evening, we ended up spending $35 for a few bites of sushi and some items from the Dollar Menu at Mcdonalds. Yes, Crazy Fish, drove me to McDonalds after my experience. And I hate McDonalds. On another note, do not be fooled when you hear the staff boast that they only use real crab meat in their sushi. This only means something when you can taste the crab and there is a sizable amount with the roll. I think that part of the problem with the lack of flavor was that they skimp on real crab rather than just use Krab. So that's how you betrayed me, Yelpers. I guess you can't win them all, and I will give you another chance. Just please don't let me down again. Fool me once... xoxoxo Alexis

Came in for a light dinner. As any new sushi I try, I ordered the Salmon Nigiri. The portions were large and the price was fair. The salmon was delish and melted in my mouth like butter! Love me some good salmon! I liked that all the beers for foreign, but they were pricy.
(3)Justin C.
Wait staff was very nice. Sushi cooks liked to talk and made the wait for my carry out sushi enjoyable.
(3)Adam F.
Very good sushi. Great service (thin blonde woman with great smile, knew when to check on us and when not to) Reasonable prices on rolls and sushi. Had the green chile roll, had to, when in Rome!
(4)Dianna K.
Went last night 02/02/13 with three friends. Place was fairly busy and we had to push two tables together in the middle of the room, just as four other people next to us had done. Sushi was okay (from Hawaii and lived on the Oregon coast) for landlocked place. Service however, was decent until right when we finished our second set of drinks a bus person came over and grabbed our table and said "We need to move your tables." In other words, it is time for you to leave because there are people waiting to be seated. The restaurant was pretty full, and she didn't ask anyone else to leave, or move their tables, just us. We left, all of us disgusted at the service. The four of us will never eat there again, and we will tell all of our friends to so the same. Extremely rude and unacceptable behavior toward a party of four who easily spent over $100. Never again Crazy Fish. This is no way to treat your customers.
(2)Matt C.
Why does everyone like this place so much? Not that bad but nothing special.
(3)Greg K.
best thing on the menu spicy tuna bowl!
(4)nathalie f.
The atmosphere is great and so is the food. The sashimi is really fresh and I love their vegetable and shrimp tempura. Though the best I've had there is their salmon tempura with a really yummy dipping sauce.
(4)Kelly S.
My boyfriend and I went here for our first anniversary. We waited for ten minutes before a server came to our table. The waitress apologized and said she did not see us. No big deal at first. We ordered drinks, and then proceeded to wait another ten minutes for them to arrive. Even after this we decided to order, big mistake. We waited 45 minutes for and appetizer. The table next to us sat down, got drinks and sushi before we even got our appetizer. Since at this point our waitress was obviously ignoring us my boyfriend talked to another server. He apologized and went to see what the wait was about, he came back with a cold, dried out squid appetizer. Gross. Then he brought some of our sushi order....only none of it was what we ordered. Finally feeling hungry, and angry we left. And went to Sushi and Sake down the street. Where we were sat, given drinks and an order of amazingly fresh and delicious sushi in ten minutes. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME ON CRAZY FISH!!

The best speciality rolls in town! Must try, they are so tasty and unique. Great location in Nob Hill, good service and cool atmosphere.

Always good, clean and prices are fair. Usually order the spicy tuna, Philadelphia Roll (cream cheese) and the Shrimp/Veggie Tempura....my mouth is watering just typing this! :)

Why does everyone like this place so much? Not that bad but nothing special.
(3)Greg K.
best thing on the menu spicy tuna bowl!

The atmosphere is great and so is the food. The sashimi is really fresh and I love their vegetable and shrimp tempura. Though the best I've had there is their salmon tempura with a really yummy dipping sauce.
