Come for the booze, and leave for the food. Haha! My buddy and comrade of the greatest kind, one Kevin S. and I had been on a hunt for the quintessential dive since his arrival. At least that was my plan all weekend. Oh, and how we found it. With a little help from Yelp we found Carraro's. The funny thing is when most would shy away from this place we embraced it. We actually came because of the horrible reviews just to see how true they might be. I have to say there may be some validity, but I couldn't tell. Originally our commitment was to one drink out of a sealed bottle. After we arrived and sat at the front bar we quickly changed our tone. Deciding to stay for a few rounds. As I indulged in the spirits and Kevin the tap all I could notice was the pour, LAWD, the pour. Haha! If you're ever brave enough to venture into a "true dive" then you will know my friend. Oh how you'll know. After many failed attempts at finding a dive bar I can say I've been successful in ABQ. Some people I know think that the Copper Lounge, and Billy's Long Bar are dives. They're just a little too classy and upscale to be given such a title. Though, if that is your thought process then stick to what you know, but know this; they are far from and you'll never experience the awesome that Carraro's has to offer. Like Nat S. said, "Cool! If I told you more then it may reduce the secret nature of the beast." So I will leave you all with that because I think I may have divulged too much already.

So, so bad. Alright, actually, the one bite of pizza I ate was pretty good, and the waitress was sweet as could be. That being said, while I don't mind a dive bar that is divey, I DO mind one that is a health hazard. I literally saw 4 scurrying cockroaches in the dining area. Hence me stopping after one bite. And the waitress, while sincerely sweet and a good waitress, looked VERY rough. Like, needs to shower more often rough. Like, missing a couple teeth rough. Rough. I made sure I ordered a bottled beer and I wiped it down. "Not my kind of place" is an understatement.

The bartenders are rude and complete ass-hats. I will never go to this bar again, and i strongly suggest you take your money somewhere that doesn't treat their customers like they are doing something wrong by enjoying their time at the establishment. It makes no sense. I really hope this place goes out of business.

I love this bar. No really I love it. It's been my neighborhood bar since I was of age. The pizza is great. The beers are cold. The service is awesome. The bartenders will play chess or dominoes with you. The juke boxes are chick full of good tunes and the clientele are some of the best in the city. I cannot say this enough, I. Love. This. Bar!

Ping-Pong, and air hockey! Great service, and great food. The crowd is very eclectic, and fun. My favorite place to grab a drink in ABQ. I recommend getting a slice of bacon and green chile pizza, or the ham and cheese sandwich.

Great local spot! Lots of space, and a cool arcade-like section in the back (pool, pingpong , & air hockey). Don't drink too much, the mgmt gets worried.

We come here every Sunday to watch breaking bad, it's a regular haunt for my husband and I. We actually met here! And now we are married. What are the chances? The food here isn't really a focus of mine. I've had it, and it's decent, but we generally come for the divey college atmosphere. There are pool tables, ping ping tables, and friendly bar staff. You can feel at home at joes. I also like this place because its within walking distance of the "student ghetto" and it isn't overrun by Douchey dude bros like at say...montevista.

Perfect dive bar with good food and a Ping pong table! I chose this place for a Wednesday outing because it has a ping pong table. While the table quality is sub par (my friend put a little weight on it and it all fell apart), the atmosphere is spacious and comfortable. As a bonus, the food is good; we ordered a pizza and it surpassed my expectations. The only downside is that the bar service was a bit slow; my friend waited around 15 minutes to try to close out his tab. Overall a great place to hangout for the evening.

Meh, cool dive bar kind of place. The pizza is good, but the service is very so-so. Hit or miss on the beers. They were out of a bunch the other night when I was there. I think you can do better, but the pool tables and air hockey kind of even that out.

Awesome layout. Sneak to the back for the party. Relax, no one knows you're here; no one cares.

Decent place. Slim beer selection, average fried bar food and good enough pizza. If you're trying to find a place where you and twenty of your closest friends can get a buzz and still afford a bite to eat, this is it. Check out the grout in the men's room.

I have to echo most of the reviewers here and say that Joe's place is the only proper dive in the university area. That said, it might sit uncomfortably with some of the patrons that the management has a rather unsavory association with the anti-abortion rights lobby in Albuquerque and some rather wacky theories about the causes of autism. ( theaveragejoe.us/THE_AVE… if you can be bothered). This used to trouble me, but then I realized that part of the reason for going to a dive bar is that you check your preconceptions at the door. You, the patron, are looking for a little respite from the torrent of expectations which probably dominate your life outside: expectations of good grades, a stable family life, agreeable political opinions. This is what Joe's is for, and it does an amiable job. Ideological consistency is a cardinal sin which no respectable dive bar can commit, and Joe's avoids this transgression well enough. But the other unforgivable act is to charge exorbitant prices for booze. It is a sad comment on night life in Albuquerque that Joe's can get away with charging $6 for a pint of Stella: presumably the management knows that, just like the women's right to choose, the customer's right to expect a fair shake at a dive bar is perhaps more negotiable than we all thought.

Joe's is a favorite haunt in University Heights area. Joe's resembles your friend's basement: obligatory Jim Morrison poster, a ping-pong table, cheap beer and good music. I'm not too keen on the food. But there is one exception: The amazing deep-fried vegetable platter. I recommend Joe's if you're on a budget or if you just want to hang out with friends without club music pounding at your ears.

We dinned there last night for the first time in 20 years. Don't know why this was off the radar. Had the Santa Fe pizza, pretty decent and priced well. The beer was not too cold. I had read about that. We will be back.

To me, this joint will always be known as Joe's Place, which is the name of the dank, winding bar in the back of the more bright, airy, and usually less populated Carraro's section in the front. Simply put it's one of the best true dive bars in a city surprisingly lacking in great dives. For the folks living at or near UNM, it's the only dive within walking distance, which is a shame. One of my good friends once favorably said that spending time at Joe's/Carraro's is like drinking in a good buddy's basement. With Joe's rickety ping pong table, black light posters, low celing, dim lighting, and cavern like ambience, who could argue? I could go on and on about this place, but it is a true classic ABQ establishment that every UNM grad should have frequented at least once before earning their degree. Yes, it's a pinch dirty. Yes, it has a frightening bar of dial soap in the men's room (part of the charm!). Yes, the prices have sadly gone up a bit in recent years from their original dirt cheap rates. BUT, spend some time at Joe's chatting up the motley crew of regulars, the bartenders, the guy checkin' IDs...have a pint or boilermaker...put some songs on the juke...eat a really good slice of pizza (just a sliver of what they offer on a full Italian menu)...play pool/ping poing/air hockey/pinball...do some people watching...and really take some time to appreciate and enjoy the great ABQ dive called Joe's Place.
