I don't believe I've awarded five stars to any New Mexican spot in Burque. Mostly, it's because many are good, even great, but as I often mention, they are undistinguishable from one another. For the most part, Barelas could practically fall in to that undistinguishable category: it's got your standard NM fare, great red and green chile, excellent burritos and enchiladas, and friendly-to-a-fault servers. In fact, there's even one conspicuous item missing from the menu here: sopaipillas. Still, this place receives a presidential pardon (me being president, of course) and then some for their chicharrones. My lord. Chicharrones should probably be outlawed, being that they're essentially bacon on crack or steroids or meth or something, but Barelas offers them up like dime bags of whatever the drug. Of course, I'm the fiend in this equation, as is my dad. We're like generational addicts, passing this bad habit on to our heirs. If you taste the chicharrones, properly dipped in the side of red chile that you request and then wrapped up in a tortilla, then you understand the allure of this drug too. My advice: just try it, all your friends are doing it too. But beyond the chicharrones, everything else here is consistently good. The enchiladas are great, the breakfast burrito with sausage I had on Saturday was spectacular. You just can't go wrong, at least until you die from a heart attack 20 years from now, but by then your life will suck anyways. So following that rationale, come here and pig out on the chicharrones, the delectable red chile, and whatever delicious NM food your battered heart so desires.

If you're in Albuquerque this is a must to visit and eat at. The red chile is out of this world, and next to Frontier, has the best tortillas in town, period. Get there early because this place gets busy, very busy.

I was just introduced to this restaurant and it is such a great place. I had quesadillas with carne adovado and it was the best quesadilla I have ever had. I also went back on Saturday morning and I was not disappointed, other than not be able to sit outside, but guess you have to get there early to get the best seats.

Came in for a late breakfast on a Tuesday morning and there was a good sized crowd for 1030am. Didn't have to wait to be seated though so that's a huge plus. We were asked for our drinks snd our orders fairly quickly and recieved it all quickly. I got myself a double egg burrito with bacon and potatoes smothered in green Chile. Thw wife got a carne avadada (sp?) Burrito and brother in law got the chicharoni burrito. Food was great and Chile was amazing. The only thing I disliked was the size of the burritos. Compared to most New Mexican restaurants they were some small burritos but delicious none the less.

I consider myself an expert when it comes to New Mexican food. I am a native and my mom has been designated as the best cook in her family(8 siblings). That being said, Barelas is a place I wouldn't hesitate to bring my own mom to eat native New Mexican food. Their red chile, tortillas and chicharrones are a true treat and worth the price and wait. If you want to eat like a local....eat here.

  • Tim W.

One thing about this place is that it is the most misnamed restaurant in town. Coffee is dradfull! Which actually is a dissapointment for breakfast. So the name is ironic. But, I do concur with the general reviews on the mexican food! Very good and a friendly warm atmosphere.

Of course this place has the patina of and feel of New Mexico. Traditional New Mexican dishes, no matter what you order you will be satisfied. Green chile is almost stew like with chunks of pork in it. Red chile is flavorful. Neither is hot, green has more of a kick than the red. With that being said... Let's get to skinny, service is hit or miss. Earlier in the week, my girlfriend and I had great service during lunch hour rush. This weekend as a 5 top, probably one of the worst I have experienced. We sat there for nearly 10 minutes before we were acknowledged and brought menus. We were never asked for a drink order, she just came back about another 10 minutes after dropping off the menus to take our order. She didn't bring enough waters for the table, no straws and forgot 1 coffee. The second coffee was brought 5 minutes later. No creamer was brought. As for the food, the child's plate was brought first then another dish a few minutes later, 2 more plates a couple minutes later and finally the last a little after that. Fyi, she forgot so many things that we actually went to the "cart"on 3 different occasions. I could go on about other things she messed up or forgot or didn't ask about or neglected or... You get the drift! Be cautious, despite the great food a horrible waitress can definitely damper the mood.

I very much enjoyed Barelas Coffee House. They have a lot of great choices, prices are good and service was great. Very tasty food with good chili and super coffee (go figure, it's a coffee house).

I hate to give away the best places but sometimes I need to share the love. This is the best place on earth, definitely in NM. Especially after a night of over-indulgence or because they are open and you are hungry or just because they are open and you can. Sometimes they are not open when I want them to be. That's a bad day. I have the deluxe huevos rancheros with red and green every time, unless I need carne adovado then I have that with eggs & green. My Dad has the menudo. I'm sure everything else is good too but that's all I care about. The boys enjoy it too but I don't remember what they get. They make some of the best tortillas in town. The manzania tea is necessary if you are there for over-indulgence. Coffee is good too, not Starbucks good, but diner good. This used to be in the hood, like scary hood but it's now generically boring safe. Unless you have never been to ABQ then it might look scary but trust, it's fine.

I visited for the first time with a friend who wanted good posole before she returned to the East Coast. After staring at the menu, I thought I should ask someone about allergens. The staff person in the kitchen said, "The carne adovado dish should be fine. The red chile sauce has gluten, the green does not. It is cooked in red sauce, but no flour". I checked with the waitress, who thought that sounded contradictory, and brought the manager by our table, who agreed "no gluten in the dish". After the meal, we were leaving the gift shop when i started to feel very very sick...all they symptoms of gluten. Quite sick later. Either they don't know what is really in the carne, or they were ignoring possibly flour in the hash browns. Nunca mas.

  • Lindsay W.

This was the first time we ate here - and we were really happy with our meals. I had tasty cheese enchiladas - which came with excellent salsa. Iced tea was excellent. There are a number of vegetarian options, but you are told up front that all their chile has pork in it. There are plenty of tables but I hear the place gets real busy at certain times. Prices were excellent - how often can one get a full meal and tea / sodas for around $20?

Always at the top of my list! Everything is good. I particularly love warm days to sit in the enclosed patio. Lovely place with heart!

I think Barelas Coffee House is overrated. Yes I understand it is always packed but still it is not all that great. There is always a long line to wait to be seated. When seated we get our drink orders in right away. However, it takes forever for our actual Server to take our order. I have only had the Huevos Rancheros and it is not bad but not good enough for the hassle it took to actually get it. The Huevos Rancheros is average at best. The coffee is average at best. I like the potatoes and the price is reasonable. The people who work there at the counter are friendly. The atmosphere is noisy but understandable for a family establishment of that size. I guess this place is iconic and is the reason people flock to it every morning. Even though I live a couple blocks away I try to avoid going in there.

  • Ricky M.

This place rocks and reminds of of all the hole in the wall places in Northern NM great food along with great locals there breakfast is amazing and tastes like grandma made it not to mention you can even order a bowl of menudo if you had a long night of drinking the night before.

    (5)
  • Rissa R.

I have too many positive things to say about this little gem! Read the other reviews and you will see! All I can say is this joint has the BEST menudo and their red chile is awesome (it will convert some of you die hard girl chile lovers!). Perfect place for a "home cooked" style meal and a comfortable atmosphere. Note: Get there early! This place gets packed!

Always a classic and great meal! Had the Obama special and added an extra side of Chicharrones as usual! Love the people, service and food!

Pure heaven , with just the right amount of cheese ( which I thought is a must for any Mexican food )..egg white with beef , tacos and amazing amazing green/red chile. Why is it that tex-mex food doesn't have green or red chile option? Great service, great food, great price..Chai tea is a must try..ordered 2 sandwiches for the road to Texas, which turned out to be a very wise decision. Next time I hit New Mexico, this is the only place I d be stopping in Albuquerque for

An Albuquerque staple, on any given day you will run into the political powers plus movers and shakers while eating delicious New Mexican food. The carne is out of this world

  • Sharon B.

Sharon reviews Barelas Coffee House, Albuquerque, NM Barelas Coffee House is an institution in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It is situated in a quaint area known as "Barelas" a neighborhood that once housed Hispanic families for many generations. Barelas caters to food with New Mexican flair, which is different from Mexican food. Come to New Mexico and you will see there are regional differences in Hispanic foods - from New Mexican, to Mexican to Cuban, Puerto Rican, Spanish, just to name a few. Some would even say there is "Northern New Mexican" and general "New Mexican" differences. This is true, even if the non-native cannot distinguish right away. Barelas Coffee House is an interesting old building from the days when adobe was king. You will enjoy the eclectic atmosphere if you want to experience New Mexico. Some say there are many "Politicos" or politicians who visit often to network. Don't be surprised if you see a local politician or celebrity there every once in a while. The best dish, in my opinion is the beans and green chile bowl with a side of tortillas. You can't go wrong with that!

    (4)
  • Bill R.

food is edible, better restaurants on 4th st. than this, green chili is good, the red leaves a lot to be desired. gift shop sold me a shirt with a hole in it and would not exchange it. will not be back to this place.

    (1)
  • Myria M.

The Huevos Rancheros (ranch style eggs) are the BEST! Classic New Mexican style breakfast.

    (5)
  • Mark S.

Barelas is a great family owned breakfast place near downtown. Everyone is very friendly, and I love their take on traditional breakfasts like huevos rancheros. The best part? The tortillas are homemade, and supercalifragilistically delicious! It's worth a visit just to taste these handmade tortillas with your meal. Their green chili is also spectacular, rivaled only by their red chili, which was the best that I had in New Mexico.

  • Jes A.

Love the food, so far everything I've ordered here has always been great... except the coffee- go fig. This is where I just get my rarely-enjoyed soda-pop instead. Still, this is a great place to take out-of-town visitors, great Albuquerque vibe, next to a ton of interesting stuff- Hispanic Cultural Center, rail yards, the Barelas neighborhood. If I had to choose a favorite menu item, I think it would be the posole, I always go red. They serve it right, with lemon wedges, fresh chopped onion and shakers of oregano on the table. There's a ton of seating, but sometimes there's still a wait. It's not usually too long and the end result is very worth it. Another yelper's review just reminded me- I don't think there's anything vegetarian on the menu, forget about taking your vegan friends there- unless they've ticked you off, or you want to convert them. Sorry, but that is kind of how old-school New Mexican food is made... with lots of love and a little lard.

I wish there were tortillas like Barelas in Central Texas!!! On a road trip we stayed in ABQ overnight and decided to try Barelas for a New Mexico style breakfast. I ordered the Huevos Rancheros Deluxe with green chile, the wife got the regular Huevos Rancheros with red chile sauce on the side and our best friend got the Carne Adovada. Also ordered a stack of extra tortialls becaseu these things ROCK! Mine meal was outstanding, the wife liked hers but glad she got the sauce on the side, our friend loved his but couldn't finish becasue of the heat of the red chile sauce. The only minus in my opinion was the coffee. I roast my own beans and I can drink instant coffee, but the bitterness of this coffee was horrible to me, only one cup and I drink a pot at breakfast! Our waitress was new, but very friendly. We shared a set of two tables with five others because it was crowded on a Saturday morning but they were friendly. Everybody knows everybody there so when they left a friend that had joined them turned to us and said "I'll just talk to them. Well her, these two guys are scary..." We enjoyed a nice chat with Richard before we had to hit the road for Texas.

  • Dan Z.

I'm not sure where to start. Everything I ate was incredible! the tortillas were to die for, the chicharonies (?) were tasty the green chili everywhere was phenomenal! We got there just in time to beat the crowd because when we left, there was a line out the door! The staff was awesome! This was my first time there, but we will be back when in town next! Parking sucks, but not worth taking any points away - I suggest parking at McDonalds or Autozone and walking.

  • Matthew M.

I navigate by coffee houses. With Bareles Coffee House for me it's not the coffee, it's the food, the nieghborhood gathering and did I mention the food. I had my fried eggs on cheese enchiladas the other day. Awesome!

  • Lori B.

Yes, I am giving a dive coffee shop 5 stars. This is the epitome of dive coffee shop. Look it up in the dictionary and there just might be a picture of Barelas next to the term. It's good! It's greasy....in a good way. The waitresses all talk to you like they are your friends and have known you forever. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the Deluxe Huevos Rancheros with Red Chili. I don't live in Albuquerque anymore and would kill to have Barelas in San Jose. We visited twice on our recent 5 day trip. One more thing. When you pay your bill, add on a couple of Apple or Cherry Empanadas for later. You will not be disappointed.

  • Billy N.

Huevos Rancheros is what I come back for. Deluxe with over easy eggs. Sooooooo good. Love the home like atmosphere and the staff is super friendly. Need a different brunch place? Check out this gem of a restaurant.

  • Casey K.

Came during a Thursday lunch hour and didn't expect exceptional service for that reason, but on this visit, it wasn't even at a grade C-. Not friendly waitresses. Anyhow, after reading so many reviews about the huevos, I decided to give it a go. I got Christmas chili. I was pretty disappointed. My food was warm at best and the chili was a little disappointing. Maybe I had gotten too spoiled with the huevos I had in Santa Fe and Las Vegas, NM. I wouldn't say I'd come back, unless my meal guest insisted on going here. Not one of my favorite places to eat for good chili.

The chicharron burrito was crunchy and flavorful! Very hearty and filling. Also really liked the coffee - the hint of cinnamon at the end is perfect.

  • Sanda S.

Hands down THE best place for red or green chilie in the city. It's so great you see locals there all the time. I'm talking true Burqueños. This is the real stuff here! Extra Yum!!!

  • Rachel H.

This place is bomb. The staff members are suuuper friendly and helpful if you're an indecisive orderer. I like the seat yourself & pay at the front register atmosphere. Pretty casual & easy breezy. We didn't have any trouble finding a table & we were helped immediately. The food. I had huevos rancheros deluxe with green and red sauce. It was fantastic! The corn tortilla on the bottom was perfect and added nice texture. The sauces were both delicious! I think I preferred the red sauce, but that's just my personal opinion. The hash browns, beans & eggs were cooked to perfection. The side tortilla was very tasty! Oh! But vegetarians beware. All of their sauces are cooked with pork. BUT they'll give you a side of salsa if you'd prefer to skip the chili. If you're not a super strict vegetarian you can just pick out the meat since they're pretty large chunks. That worked out just fine & dandy for me. Overall, we had an awesome experience. Would definitely recommend!

  • Ashley P.

Based on the hype, I expected this place to knock my socks off. Nah. Socks intact here. The chile is meh. Based on other reviews, I expected mouthwatering aromas, fab flavor, and magical deliciousness. Instead, I got... Meh. It was bland, flavorless, and had no heat. My tortilla wasn't even cooked all the way, and my eggs were not cooked how I ordered them. This place has an awful parking situation, yet is always packed. How there are so many folks who like bland food reminiscent of the elementary cafeteria, I will never know. I'll be back if I have to... Otherwise, I'll grab my breakfast in greener pastures.

  • Christine H.

One of my favorite places to have breakfast or lunch when I'm away from home!! All food tastes homemade and delicious!! Small cozy restaurant and outdoor patio to dine. Service is great! It's a must try and will keep you coming back!

  • Wes T.

As far as New Mexican cuisine is concerned, this is pretty spot on. The menu is simple, full of things that any self-respecting NM food purveyor should be able to pull off. Everyone says the carne and eggs, as well as the huevos are good. I liked them, the chile was good, and the homemade tortilla was a nice plus. Service here is iffy at best. It's a family affair, and they're taking the "Land of manana" thing very seriously. If you're not familiar with the concept, or that of "New Mexico time" then this place is a living master class in the concept. Long waits in line to be seated, disappearing waitress, tables not bussed. One wonders if the food is really that good, or you're just so relieved to actually get your food that when it arrives it seems almost heaven sent.

    (3)
  • Quinn A.

Work lunch - 12 of us and they didn't bat an eye. We ordered just about everything - huevos rancheros, patty melt, tacos, pasole, you name it - and everyone cleaned their plate, so I'd have to say it was pretty good. The coffee was good, too. I like the little store but the trinkets and stuff are overpriced. I think I'd like to eat at the counter and just people watch next time. Fast, clean, satisfying.

    (4)
  • Riley J.

I try to get excited about eating at Barelas, even though the only time I eat here is when my uncle comes into town, but I just can't muster up the excitement. Everyone constantly raves about the huevos, but I could take it or leave it. There is nothing exciting, incredibly delicious, or incredibly special about Barelas, this includes the chile folks. Personally, I find their chile tasteless, aroma free(dat aroma, mmm), and kind of boring, their side dishes can only be described the same way. I just can not jump on the Barelas bandwagon no matter how hard I try. It's just bland food to me, and I am not a fan of bland.

    (3)
  • Bryan P.

Simply the best, they do the staples better than anywhere. Beans, tortillas & red chile. Gotta have some chicharones!

    (5)
  • Ashley T.

Huevos Racheros was delish! Enjoyed breakfast on the outdoor covered area, great atmosphere.

    (5)
  • Martin D.

I love any New Mexican spot that has chicharrones! Place gets busy so expect to wait after church on a Sunday but don't give them a bad review because they're busy come on people. Busy means it's great and yes a say great! Albuquerque has a lot of chain restaurants in my opinion so I love finding these hidden local joints!

    (5)
  • Maria G.

I love this place. It isn't fancy or fake. This is small town New Mexico right here in ABQ. The chicharones and red chile are classic. This is an old school place with charm and history. We make a point to bring visitors here for the flavors of New Mexico.

Barelas Coffee House. A true Albuquerque institution. Frequented by locals the establishment is also known to have its share of celebrity sightings, particularly of the political kind. Notable patrons have included Mayors, Governors,Senators (John McCain ate here on a campaign stop in 2008) and yes even Presidents, (Barack H. Obama in 2010). Located on 4th St. near Avenida Cesar Chavez in the historical Barelas neighborhood just south of downtown Albuquerque. Traditional New Mexican cuisine and one of my all time favorite local breakfast destinations. I recommend the huevos rancheros "delux", red, with a side of carne adovada, and don't forget the coffee!

    (5)
  • Eric C.

This place was rad! Super friendly and fast service. Also pro tip for menudo lovers, order the small bowl and order sides of hash browns, egg and the carne adovada.

    (5)
  • Andy B.

I got here early for lunch (11.10am on a Thursday) and had to wait for a parking space (this place is really popular!) I had the carne adovada and eggs. It was a very generous portion, the hash browns were almost all crispy/cooked (a real issue around these parts) and the carne had great flavor. I ordered it with "Christmas" and would have enjoyed it more had the chile been hotter/spicier. The price was very affordable and by the time I was leaving there were about 20 people waiting for a table. I will definitely be back.

    (4)
  • Jazmine V.

You must have the carne adovada or huevos rancheros. The posole and menudo are also very good. Watch out..this place gets CROWDED, so get there early or plan to wait in line. The staff was pretty efficient and had us seated within 10 minutes even though we were in a huge line when we arrived. The chile here is really good. I'd like to go back and try some more of the menu items.

Barela's is not the owning family's name, Barela's is the name of the neighborhood/barrio in this part of Albuquerque west of the old Santa Fe Railroad Depot. My friend Bill asked me if I wanted to have breakfast in a contemporary place with good-looking servers or an older place with excellent food down on Fourth street with excellent food several blocks south of downtown with delicious food on the left side of the street with really good food. What choice did I want? I am not the person people look to in the West when they want to know about carne adovada. I've had carne adovada good and bad in many places. Usually mediocre. I had the best carne adovada, siimmered pork, I've ever eaten at Barela's Coffee House. WIth eggs and tortillas too. Adovada rojo fresh, a little sweet, spicily warm, the pork tender enough for babies and others with no teeth to chew, smile and easily digest. And history. This place has been ground zero for a lot of Albuquerque and New Mexico politics. Lots of it on the walls, most of it taken away after great meals and conversations by people who've shaped the area for decades. This is a rambling place, growing over the years to fill the triangle of a tiny block it sits in. A room here, a wing there, a beautiful garden area with roses and vines throughout. You decide. Modern food and decor with lovely service or tested recipes from the center of an Albuquerque Barrio. The service is great here too.

You're in, you're out, and you get exactly what you came for. Big ass burritos for $4, or rancheros with extras for $7. Yes- bfast outing for under $20!!!! my neighbor ordered a bowl of chicarrones as appetizers w/ a dz tortillas for his fam. Genius! Chile not at all hot, 's why they get a 4/5.

This place use to be Good back in the day, when the family use to run it.Now a days they just have who ever cooking their food!! Very disappointed sorry but El Modelo is better!!!

Had the pleasure of FINALLY eating at Barelas Coffee House for the first time last week, and it was great! Dad and I rode our bikes here and each ordered the Deluxe Juevos Rancheros with green chile. We were lucky because we came on a Monday morning, and I hear that this place usually gets packed, but we were able to get a great table by the window with no wait, and had fast, friendly service. The breakfast came out fast, hot and was delish! I've had my share of Juevos Rancheros here in NM, and this place is right up there with the best. You can always tell a good NM restaurant by it's chile, and Barelas had great green chile (hot)! Our server was friendly and very attentive. Inside was nothing special, but really had that New Mexican kitchen feel. It was definitely a neighborhood/local favorite, as I could see by how many of the servers knew the customers by name. Love these kind of places. They had so many great things on the menu for breakfast and lunch, and I can't wait to try more!

  • Lenore L.

My dad has been talking about this place for years. His uncle or cousin took him here years ago and he wanted to eat here again. We couldn't find it when we visited two years ago. But this trip to Gallup we had more time in Albuquerque and somehow we found it! And it was so worth it, oh my goodness. New Mexico red chile at its best. Delicious!!! We shared enchiladas and a bowl of chile and tortillas. Service very good; the servers are really nice. Gave me ice for my dogs, which I had to check on every five minutes in the car because the day was a bit warm. They had a battery operated fan on them in the shade but it was still a bit warm. The ice helped cool them down. they were even apologetic that I couldn't bring the dogs on the patio.

  • K K.

Atmosphere is ok. Food tastes like it comes right out of a can. The salsa uses canned tomatoes. Ordered the Chicharon Burrito and the pork tasted a few days old. Beans have no flavor, rice is horrible. Wife ordered a bowl of menudo and doesn't look like it comes cooked in red chile. This place is overrated.

  • Miguel A.

When you want a GREAT new Mexican meal w/ great service.. just stop here. I had a AMAZING experience here...

    (5)
  • Frank O.

First time diner. Plenty of parking. Seat yourself. No wait at noon rush. Quick service. SPOILER ALERT: Barela's charges for chips and par salsa. Fortunately that was the only negative. Enjoyed the cheese enchilada plate (2 red, one green.). Food was excellent. Red chile the best I've tasted so far in Albuquerque. I'm coming back.

    (4)
  • Mary W.

Food is good or a little better than good. Service is very slow. The least the last two times I've been here I've had to wait for my food for 30 min. It's worth trying though it's a local favorite with landmark status.

    (4)
  • Tony J B.

By far the best authentic New Mexican food in Albuquerque. This place has been a staple for my family for over 10 years. I bring out-of-town guests and business associates to Barelas's at least once a week. The service is five star, the food is five star, and prices are so reasonable that one visit and you will become a regular!

    (5)
  • Louis L.

Whenever I visit Albuquerque, I always stop at Barelas Coffee House for breakfast. The food is simply fantastic, and I always recommend ordering the huevos with red chile and potatoes. I do not recommend going if you are in a huge hurry to get to work or an important appointment. The staff is very friendly, but because the place is so crowded, they are perpetually overworked and it will take a little bit to get your food. It is more than worth the wait, though.

    (5)
  • Raymond L V.

This is my other go to place for breakfast in ABQ. I have been eating here for most of my life and it has remained consistent through all these years. This is a must try if visiting ABQ. I always have the huevos rancheros with red and green chile and DAMN its good!

    (4)
  • Maresa T.

This is an ABQ institution and tons of politics happens here. I gave it the low rating because it is not vegetarian friendly at all- the chile, rice, beans, tortillas and everything has meat or some meat-thing like lard or broth so vegetarian's beware- you can't eat anything here.

    (2)
  • Mark G.

This place is great. The waitress was a little downsey, but other than that it was great!

    (4)
  • Joe C.

This place is legendary and I finally tried it on my trip from Cali to Albuquerque. The New Mexican style food is simply outstanding. I went for breakfast and had the carne adobada x mass style (with red and green chile) with two fries eggs smothered in red chile...pretty damn good. I don't understand the bad coffee reviews. It is your basic Folgers like my mom used to brew. It is your typical restaurant coffee...for the critics of their coffee sorry but if you want a barrista go to some yuppie joint.

    (5)
  • Shana B.

I am not generally a meat eater, but got the carne adovada enchiladas with red chili...delicious! The staff is super nice and friendly. It gets really busy, and you will probably have to wait in a line. While you are waiting you can check out their fabulous assortment of Tabasco products (Tabasco mayo? Tabasco wood chips??!) and various photos and articles on the place (Obama visited there!). I heard its one of the local spots you must visit while in Albuquerque, so give it a shot!

An old high school friend took me here as I requested New Mexican food near where he works since I had not been home in nearly three years. Lunch time was not terribly busy and we were able to get a table without waiting. They have a small lot, and there seemed to be plenty of street parking. I ordered the carne adovada enchiladas with green chile. Mmm....delicious! It's easy to find Mexican food in most cities, but really hard to find New Mexican food. The pork chunks were super tender and the green chile brought back good memories. Fortunately, it didn't pack that much heat. A lot of food, and pretty cheap too! Most lunch dishes were around $7-8.

Barelas Coffee House serves up traditional New Mexican fare, with unexpectedly nice waitresses. They have a bangin' huevos rancheros, which can be ordered "red" or "green" depending on your chili preference, or you can get my personal fave Xmas, which is a mixture of both. The portions are large and the prices are decent. Unfortunately cops love to eat there so expect half the force to be there making the room look ugly with their high and tights.

So I've heard rave reviews about this place and less than 24 hours after touching down, it came to mind for my first "home for the holidays" meal. It was a good sign that the place is popular since there was a long line, but that was the last good impression. The waitress took forever to offer coffee. They didn't have sopaipillas and the original waitress gave us the "too bad, so sad" attitude about it. We saw a sign for Natillas (sweet rice) but according to the waitress, they were sold out; however, a table next to us had some delivered after we were told they were sold out. We waited over 30 minutes for our meal to be delivered. When it finally made it to the table, it wasn't hot anymore AND the wrong meal was delivered by a completely different waitress. When the bill came, I noticed they charged for a coffee refill. Who does that? I will probably not return here. I have had better food and service at some other places, including Garcias; and, they have sopaipillas.

Barelas Is probably my favorite place to go for breakfast in Albuquerque. Parking is a little rough at times, but driving around in a circle a few times is worth it. The food is great old school New Mexican. For a optimum visit I suggest Huevos Rancheros red and green with a small side of chicharrones. I only wished that they would open the patio seating more often it is really nice out there, also if you have a group bigger than five people you may be waiting a bit. This place is a Albuquerque institution and I can't wait to go back.

No sopapilias! The line was long to be seated. Took almost as long to get our meal. Service is ok but not great. Ok... time to get down to the food. I sampled all of the tables dishes. Above all the carne avada would be the only thing that stood out as above average. Not sure if the wait and poor service is worth it, seeing there are so many other Mexican restaurants willing to give a run for the money.

One of the best restaurants in Albuquerque. Funny thing... their coffee is terrible. This is literally on of my favorite restaurants of all time!!!! I recommend Huevos Ranchero's Deluxe, Carne Adovada and eggs, a beef soft taco with salsa, or a big ol bowl of green! Staff is exceptionally friendly. Caution: Both of their chilis (red and green) have pork in it. I love it this way, but if you are a vegetarian you will be disappointed!

I am starting to believe NOTHING is average in New Mexico. If you are a restaurant and survived and thrived after 5 years, you have to have something going for you. Barelas is no exception. Barelas is THREE attractions in one: 1. A great coffee house based on other reviews 2. A great Mexican restaurant based on my lunch 3. An unofficial Coca-Cola museum. The lunch I had was outstanding. This is what I had: 1. Menudo with posole and green chile. This was the best rendition of menudo I have had and that includes growing up in a Latino community. The tripe was very tender (for tripe). The soup was filled with pasole, beef, assorted vegetables with diced onions and lemon on the side. A small bowl can fill most people. The meudo was very tasty. Can't say enough about this dish especially if you are a meudo fan. 2. Tamale: This was served al a carte with green chili sauce over the top. The tamale was just good, but not great. If you are looking for a great tamale, go down the street to El Modelo for one of the best tamales in the country. My colleagues had various combination plates of tacos, burritors, enchiladas. They look good but I am glad I ordered what I did. This place is also a museum of sorts. Nothing in the Southwest ever rusts. Cars that are over 50 years old are still on the street here without a trace of Z-Bart. As a result of this dessicated environment is that old steel signs of the past are still in good to great condition. Here they have collected my original Coca-Cola signs and artifacts from the past. These pieces adorn every wall of this huge restaurant. The also have set aside a part of the store as it was in the 1950's. Literally, this room is of a grocery store where time stood still. Overall 4 stars. Lunch for 4 hungry males came to $33 for the whole table. This is not a tourist area and most tourists would never wander into this part of town.....it's safe but nothing but local trade here. On a Thursday, there is a long line for lunch. This is a must stop for any visitor to Albuquerque that wants to experience the local and real (not fake or touristy) ambience of New Mexican culture.

If you like crowds and enough fatty foods to clog up your arteries in a jiffy than you will like this little hole in the wall. The food is mediocre Mexican fare. Hot and fatty ! Dieters stay away ! The service is somewhat slow. Nothing to brag about. Parking is limited and the neighborhood is a rough barrio. Be careful !

I've attempted to go here for years, but always think of it on Sunday when they are closed. Today was the day. What a big diasappointment. The red chili had a flat flavor, the eggs were greasy, and everything was generally overcooked. Not very many options for children either. Way better options in ABQ - like Vic's Daily, The Range, Casa de Benivedez.

I'm a local, and this place is legendary. Closed on Sundays, though. Red chile is great, especially the carne adovada (get it with the eggs). Yes, no sopaipillas...but this is primarily a breakfast place, so go elsewhere at lunch to get 'em (like, Monroe's on Lomas). Funky, local diner-esque atmosphere, with tons of locals getting their chile fix each day from very busy, but attentive, waitstaff. Highly recommended!

Can be hugely popular, so expect a wait if you come for brunch or come a little after 1 to avoid the rush on the weekend. It can also be a bit noisy with all the people. Get the manzanilla tea (chamomile) with honey, they walk around with pots of the stuff with all the herbs and spices floating in it, and strain the tea into your cup. It isn't your average flavor either, it has a little bite at the end, like cinnamon or clove. The meals are also very hearty and tasty. Try to get a seat in the back room with all the plants, it feels very patio-like.

This wonderful discovery came our way thanks to Don Imus who raved about it on the air. We have been there many times and love the ambiance, the welcoming staff and of course the food. We are from Las Cruces, and this place is the equivalent of Nellie's. Every item we have tried on the menu for breakfast and lunch met and often exceded our expectations. No need to go into specifics... I could write pages on the quality of their hash browns alone! And let's not start on the chile rillenos, tortillas and enchiladas. We are fans. Thank you I-Man for pointing us in the right direction.

One of the oldest and best breakfast spots in town. Great chile , strong coffee and amazingly good candy selection. A must if you are new to the area. Very inexpensive and ample parking. Service can be spotty but it is nevertheless entertaining.

The best New Mexican breakfasts in Albuquerque. Try the huevos deluxe with their red chili which contains the most tender chunks of pork, pintos and hash browns. The carne adovado and egg breakfast is another wonder. Used to be called Fitos many, many years ago. Only open for breakfast and lunch and well worth the drive out to South Fourth Street.

Awesome cheese enchiladas! The side if rice was also really good, especially if you put it on top of the enchiladas. Great service!

As a former employee and part of the family, I am biased. But, since moving from New Mexico to Arizona I have to say there is no restaurant I miss more than Barela's Coffee House. The food is excellent. You can't go wrong with huevos rancheros "christmas" or their manzanilla tea (my favorite). You can expect to see friendly, familiar faces each time you go in. This is the BEST restaurant.

Did not live up to the hype. Service was very poor. Ordered the southwest breakfast; eggs over medium with bacon with green and red. Chile was watery and cold, the egg was sunny side up at best and the entire plate was cold. Sent back to be remade, and it was microwaved and returned which left the hash browns and bacon chewy. Should have gone to Duran's.

I had a friend from Canada in town so I thought my housemate and I would take her to this place. She is not an eater of spicy foods so she decided on Huevos Rancheros deluxe with red chile which is really a $1 more for cheese. I order the same thing but with green chile. It was delicious and the eggs were cooked perfectly that the runny yolk complimented the dish well. It was so much food that I only ate about half of the plate. The downside was that our server wasn't very attending to us. She showed up only twice during our whole meal and we needed refills. We were let down by the service of that particular employee, we even questioned if she was a break or something. Luckily, another waiter in that section happily helped us and was more attending to us. Good place, I'd go back for the Huevos Rancheros again.

So growing up in Albuquerque, breakfast was something sacred. With so many good options, why would you ever settle for a weekend of just cereal and toast? Anytime I return home, that obsession comes with me. I found myself trying to fit two breakfasts into one day, but was firmly vetoed by my fiance. We met up with some friends here, and what a great place it is. Here's the deal: - The coffee is damn good. Damn good, and of course cheap. - Carne Adovada was out of this world good. - The scene is wonderful. The indoor cafe is hopping, but sneak outside and it's a great place to take the scene in. Remember you pay at the counter. They'll bring you the check, but if you wait for the waitress to return to collect it, you might find yourself doing two breakfasts yourself!

Had the polsole and beef, chicken, and carne adovada enchiladas. The polsole was Ok, the pork in it is super tender. The enchiladas are amazing. Best I've had so far here in ABQ. Seating is weird because it's seat yourself with first come first serve. It's super busy so it's hard to tell who got here first.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
