If only I could give less than 1 star. I've never had such terrible service or worse food. We were coming down from a family trip in the mountains above Alamogordo and hadn't eaten all day so we were starving. It should have been so easy to feed us at that point. We asked for dirty margaritas and were told they had no olives. Then we were told they only had lime margaritas. They were lime flavored I guess, but I would bet there was less than half a shot of tequila in the drink. After we ordered anther person came out to check our ids. She did so very awkwardly too, without even a hello. Drank the nasty lime juices anyway. Then the salsa we were served was sort of like jelly consistency. Gross. I couldn't even see remnants l of a tomato in it. We ordered queso. Big mistake. I've had bad queso, watery, stadium style, old, hard but I have never had any queso as gross as this. It was powdery, clumpy, the strangest yellow and though I refused to taste it, my sister braved a bite and said it was even worse than it looked. I gagged. It was old, sure, but the kind of queso that looked and smelt so far from cheese that it was probably nasty even fresh. Then we all voted not to let the experience go any further. We told the hostess we needed to leave so to cancel our order. The waitress tried to argue with us, rolling her eyes. We didn't say anything negative or refuse to pay, just that we were sorry but suddenly needed to hurry and hit the road. She scoffed at us with one more eye roll as she manually added up our total. Without even a goodbye or a look in our direction she stormed off. It was awful. We paid the outrageous $22 for the three mini margaritas and cheese - like - plop, feeling cheated and yet like we'd narrowly escaped. Heading to El Paso now for some edible (awesome) Mexican food at L&J's. Don't even mind having to wait another hour and a half to have a meal.

Out of chili relinos on a monday night at 6 pm. It should have been a sign. The light just with chicken cottage cheese and fresh fruit manage to do one out of three. They have no cottage cheese, and the fresh fruit was from a can. Nasty!

PROS: - We liked their chips! - Our server was honest! - They had horchata! - Affordable! CONS: - I was excited to see that they had California burritos on their menu, but if you're actually from California it's not the same thing! - Our food was OK...nothing we would write home about

My whole table ordered enchiladas and we were all happy with our food. I love their red sauce and rice and melted cheese. Mmm! I hate however, their chips and salsa. Awesome service though.

Wish I could have gave it 0 stars! Bad service, bad food, bad all the way around... Yelp let us down today!

This place advertised themselves as having an extensive selection of wine and beer. When we got there, they were out of stock on almost all of their wines, and only had chilled sweet red wines available. They said they were trying to switch wine suppliers, and were letting their current stock run out. We came for the wine, so we left without eating when we discovered they didn't have it.

Nice alternative to fast food chains on the main drag. Good basic Mexican, nothing too adventurous (bad for me, maybe good for you). Nice workers, clean and spacious inside. Food is a bit on the salty side.

No go! Placed our orders for our kids and 5 min later our waitress comes out to tell us they ran out of chicken strips; no problem, we order something else. I ordered soft tacos for our daughter and when the food arrives they're hard shell tacos. My husband and I both ordered a margarita, he decides he wants another and the waitress comes out to tell him she will haw to reuse the glass he had because they didn't have any clean ones. Food was ok but not great; it's no wonder it was empty in there.

Great stop for our first taste of New Mexican food. I had one of their monster sized combo dishes: Enchilada, Tamal, Chile Relleno, Rice, Beans. I mean, as far as Mexican food, it's boring and nothing really. But call it "New Mexican food" and get me in there hungry after driving all day from Tucson with a brief pitstop in White Sands and you've got 4 stars. Short drive from White Sands National Monument actually. They have Horchata :)

More like Margo's Mexican Microwave. The chips and salsa were fine. Nothing spectacular, but fine. I enjoyed the agave wine margarita, but then made the mistake of ordering food. I thought a nice tamale and a taco would be a good taste of authentic New Mexican food. Our food showed up mere minutes after we had ordered it, we we found strange, but it soon became apparent the food had been sitting around and was merely thrown on a plate and microwaved before being served to us. The tamale was CRUNCHY and dry. My sister, who unfortunately had also ordered tamales, asked our waitress how the tamales were prepared, if they were steamed as is customary for tamales. Our waitress informed us that they make everything in advance and then heat it under heat lamps. The tamale was drenched in red sauce, I can only assume to hide its unappealing browned exterior. The ground beef taco, while palatable, was indistinguishable from a Taco Bell taco. My sister was given two chicken tacos in exchange for her tamales, but the chicken was extremely dry and she was unable to choke down more than a bite or two. The rice and beans tasted old, and the beans had hard crusty bits from being microwaved. We did not eat more than one bite of either. Despite our mostly untouched plates, we were still charged the full price for an entire meal we did not eat. Our waitress seemed unconcerned with making sure we were satisfied, while the hostess/cashier merely shrugged, and said, "I'm not a cook". I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone ever.

There really isn't anything special about this place. I've experienced much better pretty much everywhere else. The food is so-so. Pretty good location though. Prices aren't bad.

For being in New Mexico, I expected this to be really good Mexican food, but honestly it was very bland, and the wait staff might as well not be there for as slow as the service was on a not very busy morning, and how hard it was to get anything. They also had almost no food that was on the menu in stock, which seems impossible, and yet... They also don't have what I would consider to be staples that everyone should have on their menu if you're going to run a Mexican restaurant.

This is one of the few times Yelp really led us astray. I don't know if we just caught them on an off night, or if it was because we had a party of 8 people, but we had a terrible experience. We got seated promptly which was impressive since there were so many people in our group, but it all went downhill from there. Even though they didn't seem very busy, it took a while before our server came to take our order. Since it took so long, we knew what we wanted by the time he came to get our drink order so we ordered everything at once. Im not sure if that helped us or hurt us. This is the first Mexican joint I've been to they didn't offer or bring us chips and salsa. Some of the drinks came, some didn't. One person in our group ordered a beer and it came with the lid on, so we had to get up to find someone to open it for her. I ordered the sugary iced tea and just about the time I was finishing my meal, I got regular unsweetened tea. We also ordered wine, which never came along with a margarita that never came. When the food eventually came out, some of the orders were correct, some weren't. For example, L had to send her plate back and when it finally did come back it was still wrong. But she was hungry and everyone else was almost done so she picked around the stuff she didn't like. The cheese enchilada was soupy and my son's side of rice didn't come until he was finished with his food. Most of the dishes weren't hot. Sorry Margo, if we are ever back in Alamogordo, we won't be stopping by. PS. We are still waiting on our nacho appetizer.

Wow, this place was terrific! My friends are I drove through on our way out of town after camping at White Sands National Monument. All we wanted was a breakfast burrito after drinking wine all night in the middle of the sand dunes. But alas, we didn't know that we could find one circa 8 AM, but thank god, Margo's was open and ready for us. Maggie, the server, was wonderful and helped us with everything. The breakfast burrito with red sauce was great (what my friends got...). I got the chilaquiles, so, so yummy, and I'm picky about chilaquiles too. It came with refried beans and very tasty, not to mention crispy hash browns. What a delicious combination. Paired with their incredible salsa. YUM! Basically, what I'm saying is the service was great. The food even better. Now I just wish that I didn't live so far away. If you ever find yourself in Alamogordo or on your way out of the White Sands Monumnet, stop for Margo's, you won't be disappointed.

Chips had at least twice as much 'salt' as would be considered 'salty'. When I complained they said awwww like I was a hurt puppy. They were INEDIBLE. My water tasted of chemicals. They badly need to purchase a water filter. My waitress had trouble understanding my questions about the entrees because she is....by her own admission....DEAF. Now wouldn't you think that would be a necessary feature in a waitress....hearing? Not here. Next I was asked 'red or green'. With a little help from the next table this apparently means if you want your food 'hot' or 'mild'. Green = mild. Red = hot. Main course was served quickly. Food quality was almost acceptable. It fills the hole so to speak. I'd recommend somewhere else. There is a Subway in Walmart a few hundred yards across the parking lot. The hostess asked me 'how was everything'. I foolishly told her about the inedible chips. Again AWWWW like a hurt puppy. Apparently they are completely numb to the continuous complaints from customers and have decided to see those complaints as 'the customer's problem'. Clearly this is an establishment that is hard set on not learning from experience. They have no interest in serving good food what-so-ever.

Been there 2-3 time and mediocre always. Go down the street to Eddie's Burritos instead, or if you must have a full menu, Si Senior's is about as good as you can do in Alamogordo.

Smelled musty inside & everything (except for the salsa) appeared & tasted like it was straight from a can.

I've lived in Alamogordo since 1999. Margos was one of our favorite places to eat out. However, due to a death in the family (Margo) the place is not the same. Their chile rellenos used to be outstanding (when Margo was cooking them) but now they are pretty bad. Their enchiladas lack flavor and their fajita plate leaves a lot to be desired. It's a shame because it used to be a great restaurant. Unfortunately, I can not recommend any of the other Mexican restaurants in town. My wife and I go to El Paso when we want to eat great Mexican food.

We are new to Alamogordo and have heard great reveiws from friends about Margos'. Even the reveiws on Yelp weren't too bad to experience it for ourselves. I must say, this was absolutely THE WORST MEXICAN FOOD I have evern eaten! I ordered chicken flautas with rice and beans and there was absolutely no flavor in the entire entree. The beans were even undercooked, which were damn near hard to eat. Even the chips and salsa were disgusting. The waitress was nearly incompetent and didn't know what kind of beans the restaurant had. I asked if they were black or pinto beans and she said, "I don't know; I only know them as frijoles" (which is the Mexican word for beans.) Duh! This was my first and very LAST time going to Margo's. And to those of you who think this is good Mexican food, I'm afraid you've never been to a good Mexican restaurant. But who knows, maybe it was just a bad night??

Service: we were seated quickly and our drink and food order was taken quickly, however we never got a refill on drinks. Food: honestly it was delicious! I enjoyed all of my breakfast, seasoning was great, red chile was on point! I would come back!

Stopped here for dinner after visiting White Sands National Park. Overall, pretty happening spot from what we gathering. It was football night guess everyones at the bars! Needless to say this place still had it's fair share of patros. Starting with the chips and salsa; thought it was darn good and spicy for sure. Chips was solid and not flaky. I ordered the beef burrito a la carte since I didn't want to eat too much. Needless to say, the damn burrito was damn big! I just ordered the steak burrito so nothing too extravagant, but it was good. The sauce inside the burrito was quite spicy, but I can hang. Service was pretty on spot and ambiance was quiet, but very family friendly place. In the end, I would definitely swing by if I'm ever in Alamogordo again! - Enjoy!

Stopped in one night, wanted local non-chain restaurant. We sat very quickly. We ordered the combo app- came with cheese quesdilla, chile con queso, 5 bean nachos and guac. Also ordered a tamale and chalupa. Food came out fast. It was all good, not bad just not amazing. In a small town, it is nice to know there is a local place that you stop into.

I really enjoyed this place. I grew up in San Antonio and have high standards for Mexican food. Margo's really satisfied. The chips and salsa were exquisite, I honestly broke a minor sweat eating them. Couldn't tell if it was a spicy or a hot but it was delicious. I got the Chile Green Burrito, no complaints there. I think next time I'm gonna try red. The staff was very friendly and an all around chill atmosphere during my dining experience. There were some characters sitting around me but it just made the experience all the better. I'll definitely come back to this establishment

This place was actually pretty good, service was a little bad since they were slow and they charged me extra for extra salsa like really??! It's OK tho I guess since the food makes up slightly for it.

Very tasty, nice atmosphere, friendly staff. The enchiladas with green chiles were among the best I have tasted.

I have a feeling this might be the best Mexican restaurant in sleepy Alamogordo! I have very high standards for Mexican food---it was ok and I would go back. I had steak fajitas---portions of sour cream, guacamole and cheese were quite generous. I couldn't finish my meal. I'm also gluten intolerant and often get cross contaminated, but did not have this problem here, nor did my mom. She had the enchiladas which for us resembled more of a quesadilla. She had the sauce on the side and It was a bit odd tasting. Btw, they do need to heat the ladies room. It was ice cold. My mom screamed when she sat down, so I decided to wait! :-) Our waitress Christina was very friendly and attentive. We give her 5 stars! We also liked the overall old-school Mexican restaurant atmosphere. I understand the original Margo was a great cook back in the hey day (1970's) Seems to have a mix of regular locals as well as tourists (like us).

Hmmmmm let's see, years ago this place was going down hill, I will say they have improved 100%. Tacos are scrumptious to my liking, beans are good and rice is yummy. 3 stars you ask for something yummy? Well not enough waitresses and salsa is unpredictable! I rate my Mexican food first by the salsa, second by the food. :) We ate here 3 outa 4 days, salsa on day one was amazing, day two it was sooooo hot I couldn't eat it, day three (picture) its again way too hot. I figured out they put the entire pepper, seeds and all! No wonder it's sooooo hot!!! Regardless, best Mex food in Alamagordo this visit.

Ignore the reviews below. I don't really understand why people are ranting n raving about chicken strips & wine at a Mexican restaurant. My girlfriend and I went to Margo's last night & the food was amazing. I ordered a burrito with red sauce and it was absolutely delicious. The beans don't have any animal fat in them. I'm a vegetarian so I can really appreciate that. Our waitress knew what was in the bean & how they were made. These are people who care about the quality of their food. Not only was the food good but they fed us when it was very close to their closing time. I am super grateful that we had the opportunity to eat at this place. Everyone in the restaurant was incredibly kind. After driving all day it was surely a treat to eat something that wasn't rubbish. By the way, I was raised on Mexican food so I've had more then my fair share.

We had an order of Shredded beef tacos - great - they were very tasty and stuffed with meat. Chalupas were also very good! Nice and friendly waitresses and clean bathrooms.

Crap food and crap service. It always seems dark, dingy, and dirty inside. They post they offer a military discount but somehow each time I've tried they already rang up the bill w/o the discount and wouldn't change it. Some Customer Service there. Plus they try to charge me $2 each time for asking for extra sauce. Really? Well put enough sauce on on the first place and I wouldn't have to ask. Can't recommend this place.

  • Candace S.

The good: I had the chicken enchiladas with sour cream sauce and they were really good! I would order them again. My husband also really enjoyed his shredded beef and beef tacos. The bad: The refried beans were pretty dry, the chips had a very salty seasoning on them, and the salsa was good but VERY spicy. The ambiance was decent (by Alamogordo standards) and the service was very nice.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
