Yummy rocky road ! I highly recommend :)

Really satisfying on a hot (normal) day in NM. J and I visited twice! AMBIANCE: Its basically a drive through, with some benches outside if you want to sit. Your best bet if you visit during daylight hours is to park in a shaded area (they have a few spots on the right hand side) and consume with your windows down/doors open to let in the breeze. SERVICE: Super friendly. HS students(?) man the cashier stations, and are quick to give you suggestions/advice if you ask. FOOD: - Green chile sundae: Surprisingly good! I got it with pecans at the suggestion of the cashier, and the contrast of textures was great. The vanilla custard on its own was creamy and had the perfect amount of sweetness. I'd absolutely get this again. - Coke float: Standard. No complaints from J. - Rocky road sundae: Chocolate custard with marshmallow fluff and almonds mixed in. This was good, but really really sweet-- I could only eat about 2 spoonfuls before surrendering. I preferred the green chile sundae to this concoction. - Frito pie: Good, but the combination of TX style chile and fritos was way too salty. OVERALL: Really good value for satisfying snacks. If I ever find myself in the area, I'll be sure to hit up Caliche's.

I have never tried the food here, just the deliciousness that is their frozen custard. Man oh man, I sure miss their sundaes! I've never actually had frozen custard before until I tried Caliche's, so I had no idea what to expect.. but after trying other places afterwards, I'd say Caliche's is the best. It's been awhile since I visited.. which I'll have to remedy soon...but I highly recommend it!

Great frozen custard place! I had the gizmo with almonds on top and it was amazing to say the least creamy vanilla custard topped with Sticky Carmel and decadent hot fudge and crunchy roasted almonds what more could you ask for. Except for the cherry they drop on top. :) it was the best dessert I could had asked for. Definitely hit the spot. With there Coustmer service and desserts. And if you buy a bottle of there water and bring it back empty they will give you a scoop of custard for free! That sounds like a deal to me.

I love stopping here whenever I get a chance. It's a great little treat to help beat the heat. The staff are always frendly and accomidating, and make great snacks and amazing deserts. A must for anyone visiting, and a local favorite.

Frozen Custard? What's that, you say? Delicious goodness that's what! I love chocolate, so if you love chocolate as much as I do I would highly recommend their Mount Brownie. 2 Warmed Brownies with Chocolate Fudge and 2 scoops of frozen custard. They usually use pecans, but I ask for almonds cause it taste much better to me. My husband loves their teas and hot dogs. Customer service is fast and friendly! Give them a try! You'll be hooked!

Wow! Never really had frozen custard before, but i had the Straw-Anna (strawberries+bananas) and it was so impressed that I came back the next day and had the Red Velvet Cheese Cake custard! Delicious, an amazing dessert for any day, any time! I wish they had locations outside of New Mexico...

The first time we went to Caliche's we had the frozen custard. My husband had a banana split and I had the Mount Brownie. The custard was just ok, it wasn't as flavorful as Culver's. The desserts themselves were good - large portions and plenty of topping. We went a second time and got sandwiches with chips. We had a turkey with avocado on croissant and they were excellent. We'll go again while we're in the area.

Very first time having frozen custard. It was really good, the only thing I wasn't a fan of when I added toppings to my custard, it was just sitting on top (it wasn't mixed in or anything). Other than that, it was pretty good.

It's all relative. Being a huge custard fan I was excited to find this place while visiting the in-laws. However this place is a disappointment for anyone who has had custard in the Midwest or east coast. I'm convinced this place has such a high score on yelp because if you search "ice cream" there's is nothing. It is good if you've never experienced a real custard shop and you have no competition for 60 miles. Make sure to go big. I ordered a single scoop and it was literally the size of a golf ball. The scoop didn't even cover the edge of the cone. I should have taken a pict. We couldn't stop laughing. Place is way to stingy for the price. It's like they practically weigh the cones to make sure you don't get one ounce more than you should. I give it 2 stars primarily for the price per quantity ratio. Normally a single at a custard shop at least covers the edge of the cone.

Cheap + Tasty. I got two hot dogs, one with cheese and BBQ sauce, plus a sundae with 2 toppings. All for around $11. 5/5

My friends and I stopped here late night on our southwestern roadtrip to White Sands, NM. Nothing was open that late in Alamorgordo, except this classic hot dog and frozen custard joint. It turned out to be a hit. There were several options for different types of hot dogs and sauces. Also the custard was a nice little treat after the meal. Loved my experience here and would recommend it to anyone passing by the area!

If you're in Alamogordo, NM and have a craving for some great custard, go to Caliche's. "Belly up to the bar" and order yourself some of the best tasting, creamy custard on the planet. They're famous for their Green Chile Sundaes. Maybe I'll try one of those on my next visit.
(5)Jazmine V.
I've been to this place a few times off and on. I don't live in Alamo anymore, but when I visit, it's a nice place to get some yummy custard or a hot dog (Nathan's!!). I hadn't been in years and went recently to have the Gizmo. It's a sundae made with vanilla custard, fudge, caramel, and your choice or nuts. I chose the salted pecans and was super happy with my choice. The mixture of salty and sweet was to die for. I can honestly say this is the best sundae I've ever had, although I'm not an expert on sundaes. But YUM! Seriously. Don't walk...run there! On second thought, walking or running there is a great idea to burn some calories before you indulge!

Hey, I know it's just a hot dog and frozen custard stand, but it's the reason, on our 2nd pass through Alamogordo in as many years, that we stayed across the street in the Satellite Inn--just to be close enough to Caliche's. I can't remember what I liked, but I didn't NOT like anything, and what I had was pretty good indeed. I love the look of the place, especially at night, and that's mainly why I stopped here--to upload a couple of night photos I took. Next time we're through there, we'll be at our regular inn and only a quick sprint to some very tasty treats.

For the love of all things sacred! What an amazing sugarfilled trip into happiness! The mount brownie is so sweet it could jump start your car and generate fusion power! Very fine custard. It would get 5 stars but was a bit pricey.
(4)Timothy H.
Beware...the hot dogs here are enormous...at least 1/2 lb. each. You can get your choice of 2 for $5 but it was way more food than I can eat. Three of us split a sundae afterwards and we could not even finish half of it. The food was good, just saying...incredibly large portions. For some reason, I thought it was a sit-down place, but you order your food from a window and then they hand it over a few minutes later. There are benches outside but no tables. Period.
(3)Alyssa L.
So incredibly heavenly! I got the u-name it sundae and it was HUGE and not to mention delicious!!! Wish I had one of these place in Vegas.
(5)Lisa C.
yum. on a hot summer day, caliche's is a great stop. we got a chocolate caliches cup with oreos and pistachios. the frozen custard was creamy and delicious and the toppings were just right. we also got a cantaloupe smoothie which was pretty fresh and tasty. Service was a little slow, but it wasn't too bad.
(3)Aaron L.
Hot dogs and frozen custard both done right. Nathan's hot dogs, comes with all the fixings you could think of. Custard so good that we caravaned over after a meal on the other side of town in the freezing cold to get dessert knowing full well we'd be standing outside. Can't go through Alamogordo without a stop at Caliche's.
(5)Matthew J.
Hot dogs were fairly decent. Nothing to write home about. Would be better if they grilled the buns or something. Where they bring it home is the custard. Wife had a fudge brownie sundae and I had a strawberry cheesecake Caliche (which is basically like a DQ Blizzard) with real strawberries and pieces of cheesecake. Both were GIANT. Both were something to write home about. We ended up taking over half back to the hotel. Total bill was 11 bucks but essentially provided four desserts for us. Very yummy
(4)Brandon P.
OMG the custard here is amazing!!
(5)Amanda F.
Best custard ever! Creamy and delicious and more than enough for the price. Lts of choices to mix and match your own creation.
(5)Andrew S.
Caliche's might be the single shining gem in Alamogordo's severely lacking food scene. However, it's not quite worthy of 5 stars for a few reasons. First, the good: I'm going to directly contradict a previous review and say that if you've ever been to custard shops anywhere else in the country you will appreciate this. It may not exactly mimic your favorite somewhere else, but it's unique and very good. The ice cream itself is great, supremely creamy, and has a great flavor to it. The fact that they only have two flavors doesn't even really matter considering the nearly infinite topping combinations and the options of getting ice cream, sundaes, cones, cups, milk shakes, etc. It's a simple equation really, what will sell really well in the desert? Ice cream! Still it's easy to screw up with bad product or service, and Caliche's really has nailed it. Otherwise it'd be simple enough to go to any fast food place or walmart and just get ice cream. Now, unfortunately, the bad: Hours: Why do the open so late in the day? The portions really are small, however; if you look at the costs of many of the make your own fro-yo bars and various other ice cream parlors around the country it's not absurdly expensive for the quantity, but they really should serve MUCH larger portions. The drive-thru: avoid at all costs if there's more than 1 car in line. They have a two window drive-thru, but the second is never in use and you can potentially wait in line for over 30 minutes if there's even only 5 cars in front of you. However, everyone that works there is very polite. Still instead of apologizing for a wait, why not figure out a system to serve more clients faster, especially when you consider, from their point of view, the lost business per hour. IMHO the lack of any real sort of dining area or food beyond hot dogs is a detriment to the business, and this could do so much better as a more diner/cafe type restaurant. Still, all in all it's a must go to if you're in Alamogordo.

The custard was really good, the hot dog toppings were good, AND just the mere fact they have a green chili lime smoothie gets it for me. Pretty tasty!
(5)Kelly M.
We've had several things on the menu. My favorite custard is the peanut butter and chocolate. Their hot dogs are the best in town.. and they use the good ones. The Caliche Special is the best. Tried their specialty mixed lemonades and teas but they're too sweet. So I opt for the lemonade/tea mix. This is where we head for ice cream... but since there is no place for that here in town, this is not only a replacement...it's much better.
(5)Debra F.
The Nathan's dogs are great, the custard is delicious, and Markie knows the value of quality customer service!
(5)Jim W.
Consider the 4 stars for the hot dog stand/frozen custard category. A Texas chili/green chili hot dog is not getting 4 stars in a sit-down restaurant right? I enjoyed my hot dog although the green chili was more of a relish and not the green chili you might get at somewhere like the Hi-D-Ho down the street. The Texas chili was nice though. The frozen custard was nice and creamy and tasty, not cheap and watery like the bad stuff. Not a bad choice for an affordable meal in Alamogordo.
(4)Tiffany S.
Yum, Yum Yummy! Many fruity, chocolaty, nutty, or chili options at Caliche's. This place was a welcomed site after spending a couple of hot days in the desert. Keep in mind their portions are huge!

Caliche's Vanilla Custard + Pineapple Topping = HEAVEN
(5)Jeremy M.
Came here thanks to yelp! Just ordered dessert, my daughter had two scoops of frozen custard, I had a sundae called the gizmo, and my husband got a chocolate malt. Delicious & very rich! I wished I had been hungrier, because it was a generous portion and satisfying enough to qualify as a meal. Yum!
(5)Jamie T.
One day I'm going to marry the eggnog milkshake and all will be well with the world. Until that day I'll just enjoy my trips for fantastic custard ice cream, shakes, and hot dogs! I have no idea why this place isn't busier except it's on the northern end of town and difficult to turn into if you're driving northbound. Check it out if you haven't!
(5)Jesse F.
This place was awesome. Best ice cream in town.
(5)Rich P.
Dogs were very good. Apple pie ala-mode was ok
(3)Vanessa D.
The frozen custard is awesome! Caliche's also has hot dogs on the menu with a variety of toppings. It's a nice addition to Alamogordo which doesn't have much of a food variety to begin with.
(5)Rex S.
Thank you Caliche's for making it easy to get a good lunch for less! Windy City Dogs 2 for $5 YUM.
(5)gaby g.
The frozen custard is awesome. A must when passing through this town.
(5)Karen S.
Yummy treats! Love the sundaes...rich, creamy and delish! Best ice cream in town!
(5)Keith E.
Good selection of tasty hot dog combo's. Large selection of Frozen Custard Sundae treats! They discontinued Green Chile Sundae :0( it was very different. Great place for a summer treat, even winter.
(5)Maria A.
Definitely a 'must-stop' if in Alamogordo. I used to travel to Alamogordo for business and always made a point to visit here for their frozen custard with mango chunks. Yummy! Unfortunately, I've moved away from NM and won't be able to enjoy this treat again, unless I'm in Alamogordo or Las Cruces for the (another/original?) Caliche's.
(5)katie a.
this custard melts in your mouth. it is delish and worth the drive through. the outside is very cute and retro. we used the drive through and were pleased with our friendly and quick-ish service. only downside is that it was a bit pricey. i believe it was about $3-$4 for a small plain custard. the chocolate malt was also very good and very creamy but easy to sip, slightly thin.
(4)Calvin P.
Great Custard... In a place you would not expect either. Great NATHAN'S hot dog also.
(5)Elbey B.
If you don't order the waffle cone which costs extra money and was worse than cardboard, the frozen custard is rich and worth trying. I am not a big desert person, and loved the gizmo sundae. I would come back for a couple of scoops of creamy goodness!
(4)Emily K.
I had never had frozen custard before coming to Alamogordo, but surely it did NOT disappoint. My man and I go here at least once a week and get the hot fudge brownie bit sundaes. This is the only real "Ice cream" place in Alamo, so it's not like we really have the option of going anywhere else..but I'm not sure we would want to. Caliches is the best part of Alamogordo!
(4)Chelsea S.
sooooo good but ew. really busy and slow. I love this place and was so excited to visit here from out of town. Disappointed Alamo, come on!
(3)Kathy F.
The Green Chili Sundae is still available! Whenever I bring this place up on Yelp, some guy is trying to tell me that they discontinued the green chili sundae. Not true! I made a point of asking. In fact, they gave me a sample of the green chili sundae and the Cherry Chipolte Sundae. The Green Chili Sundae is definitely unique! I should've gotten the Cherry Chipolte Sundae but I was afraid it'd be too much...instead I settled on the Brownie Sundae. It was very good. Everyone was very friendly and I especially appreciate them letting me try the flavors first.
(5)Celeste P.
Super yummy! Hubby ordered the Mount Brownie. The hot fudge is mouthwatering. I tried the espresso sauce. It's really great. I was expecting the consistency of a thicker sauce and it turned out to be more of an actual espresso shot. The chocolate and vanilla custard are both delicious but if I had to pick one, I'd stick with vanilla.
(5)Autumn S.
The banana split is the bomb! We are now fans and plan on trying other yummy options. :)
