I was looking forward to a nice dinner with two friends last Wednesday night. We picked Uproot since it was somewhat central to our location, and I had been meaning to try this restaurant for some time. The restaurant was not very busy. They have a great bar, (that is the only positive part of this review). Things went downhill as we went to our table. The service all evening was painfully slow. Per the menu "if you want bread, you need to request it from your server". We did and about 20 minutes after our request we got it (after asking three times). We waited way too long for our main courses (we got an apology from our waiter). Things seemed disorginized and uneven all evening. When we got our food we found it average at best. My pasta was too salty. Great menu, but the food did not follow.

It looks like many positive changes happened here. We've gone here a few times after the debacle in May 2013 and it really is excellent now. The menu has changed and for the better. The ingredients are at the high end level again and for a decent price. Here's the new kicker: THEY HAVE THE BEST BURGERS ANYWHERE! We have ordered this many times (at least twice a month), and went for take-out a few times to be sure, and it's consistent - BEST BURGER EVER - it's also a bargain.

Went here last night, actually against my better judgement...with gems describing the staff on their website like "has accumulated a range of experience broader and farther reaching than most individuals his age.", I was concerned that the place was going to be a hipstery mess of upscale disaster. That was only partially true. Uproot is definitely trying to be more upscale than the area can really support (As evidenced by late hours for supper, and an empty restaurant at 8 pm). The feel is more like a place you'd expect to find on the upper east side - the decor is nice if a bit disjointed. The staff is excellent. It's clear they've been trained in the "we are trying to be upscale" methodology that the place encompasses in every bit of it's existence. They are friendly, OVERLY polite, and very attentive (though it probably helped that we were one of maybe 4 tables eating at that hour). The menu is a little disappointing in that it has a serious lack of vegetarian options beyond "salad". Thankfully my wife is a fish eating vegetarian, so there were plenty of options for her. The food: 1. Vietnamese steamed buns - yes. Eat them. Eat them over and over. The serving size is 2 pieces, and I would have eaten 10 more of them. The pork belly is cooked perfectly, with just the right amount of daikon and hoisin to round it out beautifully. I would stop in just for these, no problem. 2. The tuna duo - A little less successful than the buns, but still quite good. Sliced seared tuna with sesame crusting, and a spicy tuna mash served in fried tortilla chips. The spicy tuna things were great - the seared tuna was just okay and would have done better with the addition of either a sauce of some kind or at least a hint of salt prior to searing. 3. Thai salad - mix of cabbage, fried cheese sticks, roasted crushed peanuts, apples, and a spicy thai dressing. So...the fried cheese is exactly what it sounds like. It's little mozzarella sticks tossed on the salad. Surprisingly went nicely to offset the cabbage/apple flavors. Didn't really note any dressing on the salad at all, so can't comment about the spice factor, but thankfully there's enough items in there that it didn't need the extra flavor anyway. Added the side of general tso's cauliflower and it was FANTASTIC (note: I normally HATE cauliflower, but I would absolutely eat this again) 4. Shrimp dumplings - scallions and a spicy ginger glaze - very delicate, small size dumplings, delicious...though in retrospect they did have a bit of an odd aftertaste (the way food sometimes does if it's been cooked over a gas grill for example) - but again, at the time very enjoyable and would likely order again 5. Cinnamon and sugar donuts - you're an idiot if you don't get them. Freshly prepared donuts with a salted caramel/mocha dipping sauce. EXCELLENT. Be aware that there are three full sized donuts here, so save some room or be prepared to share. Had there been more, I would have seriously taken the sauce and drank it. They also have a rather unique drink menu, and we sampled a few of them...with my favorite being the "made from scratch" - Cana Brava Rum, Apple Cider, Tuaca, Egg White, Lime Juice, Cinnamon Syrup. Definitely on the sweet side, but very good...a little smaller than I'd normally expect for a 9+ dollar cocktail, but well made and the bartenders clearly know what they're doing. Overall I'll absolutely eat here again. All the food above, plus 4 cocktails, plus two coffees with amaretto and the tab was around $150 including a good tip...so maybe a little pricey for the amount of food served (item 1 was 2 buns, tuna duo was 4 spicy tuna chips and 4 small slices, salad was plenty for two, shrimp dumplings were 4 small dumplings)...on the other hand, 3 full sized donuts for dessert was an unexpected bonus. This will definitely not be a nightly stop, but would absolutely return for special occasions.

GET THE STIR FRY. Alright, let's rewind. When I walked in, I was very surprised by the decor, but I loved it. It's very modern and different. The menu was eclectic as well. I'm not sure why, but we were both extremely thirsty, and the sparkling water we had hit the spot. For an appetizer, we had the steak and eggs. You can't go wrong with breakfast for dinner. For my entree, I had the stir fry with shrimp. It was absolutely delicious. You can get a smaller or larger portion. I had the larger portion and shared it, and we still had some leftovers. The menu consists of burgers, paninis, sandwiches, etc., although don't let the food options fool as you, as it's definitely upscale. There are other entree choices as well. For dessert, we had the sugared doughnuts. Be prepared for a sugar high; you've been warned. On top of this, I tried one of their fun drinks (Made from Scratch--nice winter cocktail). The names of the drinks alone sold me. My date had a secret lemonade cocktail. It's not on the menu, but it's absolutely delicious. Fun little spot for a date or meeting with a couple of friends. Good for lunch or dinner.

Nice atmosphere although it feels cold, trendy in nj, older crowd, good burgers and good shrimp po boy, just ok happy hour, but best that I have found in the general area .. heavy appetizers. I want to like this place more it wants to be really cool but I am still on the fence over all.

I want to get my only complaint out of the way right here and say it was a little difficult to find this restaurant, but besides that, this experience was amazing! The building is very cool, modern designing, with an earthy tone that makes you feel at home and warm. Seems like a hot spot on the weekends. My girlfriend and I went out for her birthday here and were very excited to sit down and enjoy our meal. We started with her favorite steamed shrimp dumplings that came out flawlessly and left us wanting more and fighting for the last one because there were five! Because it was her birthday, the chef sent out an on-the-house mid-course of their duck special that night. This needed to be on the menu because the duck breast was superb. Gnocchi, a bed of greens, and crispy juicy duck blended perfectly together; I had to tell myself to eat it slowly so I could enjoy it longer. We took a turn then with our entrees and ordered a burger and their shrimp Poi Boy. I can't tell you much about the burger because I was so focused on my Poi Boy. It was amazing! The sauce! I couldn't get over how good this sauce was. We ate everything and were extremely satisfied with the night. The entire time we were there we felt very taken care of by our servers and back waiters, even the general manager came by to chat with us for a bit as he made his rounds. Very professional staff, quick and knowledgeable, the owners should be proud of their wait staff. Amazing place, it's in my book of restaurants to return to, and I highly recommend it.

This has been my go-to local bar for a couple years now. The menu can use a little tweaking. I tend to stick I the goat cheese pizza and arugula salad which I love. I've tried a few other items on the menu which were ok. I tend to sit at the bar. It's s much more relaxing feel than their dining area. The restaurant may have just received 3 stars from me but that fourth star is for their cocktails. I absolutely love their drinks. Mike is my favorite bartender. He makes the best drinks EVER!!! His Sangrias are perfect. He's even tweeted a few other drinks in the menu just to my liking.
From the first moment of confusion in the awkward foyer, I worried for the experience in this restaurant. Our waitress quickly introduced herself, but disappeared to handle a large party in a separate room leaving us to another wait staff. While she did check in, it was simply to ask the same questions just asked by our second waiter - the result, a constant stream of interruptions while trying to eat. While the menu shows a nice variety, Grandma's Meatballs (appetizer) are better left in the frozen food aisle. Grandma never smothered her meatballs in cheese to hide the taste. And if you ask for a substitution in this pricey restaurant, prepare to have you waiter come back to tell you there is an upcharge - per the chef! ($4 for asparagus that was wilted?) Suggest at this $$$ price range there are better experiences to be had in the area and ones that don't pretend to be more important than they really are.

I ordered the umami steak sandwich. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't very filling or worth $15.95. The cheese on it was crisp, but it was tasteless. It came with decent fries. The waitstaff was nice. The portions seem to be small here. I had the donuts for dessert. The caramel sauce was good, but the donuts weren't as great as others have said.

Tonight I enjoyed my fourth visit to this establishment and I am so hooked! We go out to eat a lot and great tasting food isn't all there is to going out for us..we love the whole package! We need a comfortable setting and great service too. I believe we have enjoyed this at Uproot. We not only enjoy the great food, but the young ladies and gentlemen who have taken care of us have been wonderful! The staff have been very attentive to our needs. The decor is modern, the menu can be tweeked to make anyone happy. We have every intention to return as often as we can..

Note they are closed Sundays. Uproot is in an odd location, isolated in the middle of the A&P plaza (intersection of Warrenville Road and Mountain Boulevard). Look for the Chase Bank, its behind it. The best I can describe the interior is upscale classy modern. Its kept very clean. There's a bar area, which has high tables you can sit at. There is a separate restaurant area as well. The staff has always been fantastic, especially the bar staff. There were 3 different types of tacos on the menu, and for each you can order 2 or 3. The fish tacos were recommended to me, and they were outstanding! Happy hour is Monday-Friday from 3-7. There's a special happy hour menu for food and drinks. Can't beat $4 glasses of wine! Some nights they have specials. Mondays are discounted wine nights, and Thursdays are Taco and Tequila nights - $3 tacos and $7 patron margaritas. Its one of my new favorite places in the Warren area.

Best wings in central Jersey. That's it. That's the end of the review. (I kid. There are a number of delectable items on the menu, although to ME that's the most notable. The weirdest part of it all is how upscale the place feels, yet they have these incredible Makers Mark/vanilla bean wings that would set a football game into overdrive. Getyousome.)

First time here and we enjoyed it very much! Our server Jade was very pleasant and attentive. We had the truffle fries which were amazing. My wife had the chicken and prosciutto sandwich which she said was really good. I had the chicken breast which was cooked perfectly and had very good flavor. Overall, it was a very good experience. I would definitely recommend this place to friends and family.

Uproot was an absolutely pleasant surprise for us. We went with a couple of friends who have also eaten in exclusive places in Manhattan, and we all agreed Uproot was outstanding in their new iteration. Apparently they started as a high end place and recently changed their menu to a more eclectic one. After a couple of nice cocktals, we started with the pot stickers and split the rock shrimp tacos, which are not traditional tacos but were actually delicious. The tuna, hanger steak and the stir-fry (PLEASE get the Gen Tso Cauliflower one) were all delicious. Finally, we got the donuts for dessert. Although the Chocolate Bomb and other dessert options looked amazing, we devoured the 3 oversized donuts served with a caramel.mocha sauce. They were amazing. If you are a foodie purist, who shuns eclectic menus with pizza and tacos along with "traditional" entrees, this may not be the place for you which is too bad. Otherwise, Uproot is worth the extra driving time to this hidden jewel in Warren. I look forward to going back and trying their pizzas!!!

This was my husband and my first visit to Uproot. We made reservations and were seated on time. The decor is very hip and lighting was very dim. Had a tough time focusing on the food selections because of the busy background pattern of the menu. Not designed well at all. In any case, I was disappointed with the menu options. Looking at the place, I'd think the food choices would be a bit more upscaled for dinner but not to my liking. I ordered the salmon which was cooked perfectly but could have been seasoned better. Not a fan of the lentils that the fish sat on since it seemed a little undercooked. My husband had the ribeye and he said it was above average but a bit fatty. The service however was great, very friendly and accommodating. I guess I had a different expectation of this place. Overall, our experience was good. I would come back maybe for lunch since I felt the dinners were a bit pricey.

Uproot - it's actually a very interesting type of place. It's located right in downtown Warren in between a bunch of different strip malls. It's a pretty big place once inside. When you enter, you walk right into the bar area and to get to the dining area, you have to walk through the bar. I'd classify this place as trendy and chic with a bit of an upscale vibe. It's relatively dark inside and the service is pretty good. They have an extensive drink menu and about 8 or so beers on tap. They really don't have any of your standard "domestic lights" on tap. It's mostly higher end beers and microbrews. I tried the Saranac Pumpkin Ale and the Leinenkugel Octoberfest on my most recent visit - both on tap. I actually hadn't tried either of those beers and they were both very good. I'd order either of them again. My wife and I were seated in the dining area and the menu is relatively simple and straightforward. They have some apps, salads, sandwiches and some entrees. We didn't start out with an app, but we both went with salads for our entree. My wife ordered the Greek salad and I had the Cobb salad. I added chicken to the salad. My Cobb salad was actually very good - every single ingredient that came on the salad was incredibly fresh. The chicken was freshly cooked and the salad was served with a very good ranch dressing. My wife enjoyed her's, as well. I actually really like this place - it's a little more high end and pricey than the average restaurant in the area but Uproot has a great bar and some pretty good food. I'm actually looking forward to trying a burger on my next visit. We may even opt to eat in the bar area the next time around. We'll definitely be back.

The bar scene is Warren, NJ is abysmal -- it's an icey, closed off town populated with rude, close-minded old people that have more in common with Long Island that the Manhattan night life they think they are a part of. There's no sense of community either; Uproot can be found in the closest thing resembling a "town square" -- and it's surrounded by Starbucks and Musclemaker Grills that all close at 9pm. So it's damning with faint praise when I say ... Uproot is the hippest cocktail experience in town. If you're under the age of 40 and are looking for somewhere to drink -- and you don't want to go to Houlihans or some dive sports bar populated with gruff townies who look at you funny, if you want to go a bar that has atmosphere and youthful energy -- Uproot is your only option. With that being said: drinks are good and the service is friendly. The decor is trendy. But go there for cocktails, don't go there to eat. It's overpriced, gourmet diner food (and it's not even mind-blowingly delicious diner food). You want to dress nice when you're going there, and they go out of there way to make it feel upscale... but then they offer buffalo chicken pizza as a dinner item? It just feels laughably phony; for all its pretence and its live jazz and mood lighting, they still offer the same dining experience as a TGI Fridays. It's just an excuse to act "trendy" and not actually be trendy. So go there for an after-dinner drink and that's it.

Started with a nice smooth Ketel One, good pour, splash of cranberry, so the bar tending is solid. Husband tried the wedge salad because I convinced him, remember that "Modern Family" episode where Clare thinks she discovered it? Ha, that's me. Ordered a small portion of pasta - Rigatoni with fried eggplant topped with ricotta pesto. Eggplant nicely cooked. Sauce was delish, albeit rich! Husband had shrimp skewer (note: 6 small shrimp) with fried brown rice - tasty because they added scallions, snap peas, broccoli. ginger, water chestnuts, and chopped peanuts. A really solid side. Atmosphere is California élan - dark wood, plexiglass, mirrored backdrop bar, serene but with a good amount of TVs tuned to sports. Love the padded houndstooth bar stools. I don't think it was overpriced, and I would definitely return.

I've been to Uproot 5 times now but my last visit was over a year ago (today is 4/23/13)...I can say that I was very pleased with the progress in just about every aspect of the restaurant...Just need to make the entry less confusing and Hamster-Tunnely (??)...it actually looks like they used panes of Hamster cage plastic for the entry wall but it works and doesn't come off as cheap...just annoying that people can see your befuddled face when you try to figure out where the door is! The main bar/lounge area is wide open with 40+ ft ceilings but just has a cold feeling to it that I can't get over. Maybe there's TOO much white? That's probably more me than anything else...OR it could be locals in attire ranging from baseball uniforms ('not that there's anything wrong with that!') to coat-and-tie. Just tough to be greeted by that image when arriving for a nice Saturday night dinner en couple. Also, the locals (well-to-do singles/couples in their mid 40s/50s) tend to inhabit this area of Uproot and the scenery can get a little gruesome at times...Nobody wants to see your grey sternum hair before they eat BRO...let's get those last few buttons buttoned, shall we? Thanks. Our dinner res was for 8:30 on a Saturday night...used Open Table to book same-day. Hostess was charming and professional...can't ask for more than that. Our server, Tyler (I think), came by to greet us and take any drink/water orders as well as recite the specials in a timely manner so we weren't pounced upon but didn't feel like we waited a long time either. Bravo, son! Good service continued throughout the evening. They're clearly new to the trade but are receiving very strong instruction from their bosses. SUCH a good sign for Uproot! Danny, Uproot's Sommelier and wearer of many hats, has built a solid wine/cocktail list with great values and some deeper vintages you won't find on any other lists in the surrounding area. We're easing my wife into red wines and Danny chose the perfect wine (Hitching Post Santa Barbara Pinot Noir 2009) to please both of us and that paired extremely well with the Short Ribs we both ordered as our entrées...should that be pluralized or not? ....I digress...Or do I? Yes. We started off with the Grilled Octopus w/ Corn purée and pineapple app along with an app-sized Margherita pizza. The Octopus was definitely the winner...good size for an app, a bit of char on the octopus and the added flavors from the corn and pineapple worked well. The highlight of the pizza was the sauce, clearly made in-house. THANK YOU Uproot for taking this little step to make a big difference. Overall the pizza was good but we'll test something else out next time. Since we both got Short Ribs this part will be short...VERY Good. Spoon worthy but we made due with a fork and knife :b. We did get dessert but I'm completely spacing on what we got....I'll add it in when I remember...it was good but I guess didn't leave a lasting impression or I'd be writing about it now, wouldn't I? With alcohol the bill came to about $220 for the two of us before tip. So, as others have mentioned, Uproot is pricey after 7pm. Once in while and saving the time/stress of driving into NYC? Definitely worth it.
